Bug#453937: hangs when probing (with x86emu on amd64) a radeonhd card

Sounds like a firmware thread-safety bug. If you ask me, not sure what was
all that big fuss about AMD allowing free drivers if these have to rely on
 propietary firmware. oh well...

The drivers don't have to rely on the firmware, thanks to the non-NDA
specs.

Also, I'm not sure this really means it's a firmware issue - maybe the X
server just holds some resource (e.g. the card ROM, as a guess) that
ddcprobe needs to run?

I've found a workaround :
I started iceape on profile manager, created a new profile, then started with this profile without any problem, then I
restarted with my previous profile, which worked without problem, so I removed the new profile and now everything is ok ;)

Bug#454111: courier-mta: Upgrade overwrites /etc/pam.d/esmtp without asking!

2007-12-03 Thread Jesse Molina
Package: courier-mta
Version: 0.57.0-1
Severity: important

Upon an upgrade of courier-mta today, it overwrote my esmtp PAM file without
asking!

During installation, the following line was displayed;

Installing new version of config file /etc/pam.d/esmtp ...

Too bad I already had a customized esmtp file. This cut off my ability to
submit new mails via authenticated relay over the MSA port.

If my memory is correct, this isn't the first time this has happened, though
I'm not positive.

Expected behavior is for the install script to ask before overwriting a
user-modified configuration file. I'm pretty sure this is in policy somewhere.

Bug#454113: iceweasel: Iceweasel slow when browsing

2007-12-03 Thread Daniel Reurich
Package: iceweasel

Iceweasel slow while browsing all sites.

The problem appears to be due to iceweasel trying to do IPV6 dns
lookups. Fixed by setting network.dns.disableIPv6 to true. This
should be the default as IPV6 use is still experimental.

Bug#454117: hpijs: depends on hplip

2007-12-03 Thread Josselin Mouette
Package: hpijs
Version: 2.7.10+2.7.10-4

Hi,

since the latest version, hpijs depends on hplip, which brings a new
daemon in the system, plus the configuration interface that is
recommended.

Since foomatic-filters-ppds depends on hpijs-ppds, please stop this
madness. The only printing daemon on the system should be cupsd, and it
shouldn't install another daemon which is useful for a very small
minority of users.

Thanks,

On my system the package compiled fine without w3m installed,

Bug#453935: aptitude: weird conflict resolution scoring

Yes, this is a funny side effect of how aptitude scores solutions.
I can't be 100% sure, but I *think* there are two effects here:

   (a) A penalty of 40 points for downgrading the package (installing
   a non-default version)
   (b) A bonus of 70 points for advancing the resolver one step.

Could we split the non-default version penalty -- ie. differentiate between
installing a new, non-default version and downgrading an existing package? Of
course, it won't help much if we can't set it above 70 points.

I have this behaviour a little bit longer than 18 days, probably one or
two month. The most notable difference is that I'm on xf86-video-intel
git since some time.

Is everyone affected by this issue using the intel driver? Please report.

In Ubuntu, we've applied the attached patch to achieve the following:

Quite the same for nice, defaulting to 10.

Bug#451818: anyone willing to to a git bisect on the intel driver?

Hi!

As it seems, the bug is caused by the intel driver. Anyone willing to
test the latest 2.1 version from snapshot.debian.net and then do a git
bisect?

For me, this is very unfunny, as the 2.1 versions crash very often on my
855GM.

(I would be inclined to bind-mount it from /.)

Bug#454122: [patch] add xsane-doc package

2007-12-03 Thread Julien BLACHE
Michael Vogt [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

Hi,

The rational is that the documentation is relatively big and it is
convenient for people with little diskspace to strip it out.

I'm unconvinced to say the least. The doc is accessible through the
Help menu in XSane or the F1 key, so making xsane-doc a Suggests seems
utterly wrong to me. If I were to split the doc out, I'd demote it to
a Recommends to have it always installed.

Moreover, XSane doesn't check for the help files availability before
running the browser, so that would only confuse users.

As far as space savings go, 1.8 MB isn't that much. It's not like
the documentation is translated in 10 languages...

Package: xsane
Version: 0.995-1

In Ubuntu, we've applied the attached patch to achieve the following:

* debian/control:
  - build seperate xsane-doc package
* rename xsane-common.doc-base to xsane-doc.doc-base

We thought you might be interested in doing the same.

The rational is that the documentation is relatively big and it is
convenient for people with little diskspace to strip it out.

Thanks,

Firstly, this would be a separate bug if true, and should not be
attached to this bug whose only relation is that it happens to have
something to do with /etc/nologin.

Secondly, it is not necessary to handle /var/lib/initscripts/nologin
separately, so I won't:

metacity from version 2.20.0-1 to 2.20.1-1 some days ago, my best guess

Hi! I earlier requested upload of 0.17 which you solved recently (many

to be the platform I'm using... So in case you haven't noticed this,
this is to report that the i386 build of gettext-0.17-1 has failed. Any
ideas how to resolve it?

Bug#454125: less man page doesn't accurately describe the v command (editor)

2007-12-03 Thread Martin Lee
Package: less
Version: 409-1

Hello,

The man page for less contains:

v Invokes an editor to edit the current file being
viewed. The

editor is taken from the environment variable VISUAL if
defined,

or EDITOR if VISUAL is not defined, or defaults to vi
if nei-

ther VISUAL nor EDITOR is defined. See also the
discussion of

LESSEDIT under the section on PROMPTS below.

On my system:

$ export | egrep EDITOR|VISUAL

Returns nothing, yet my editor defaults to nano.

More precisely, my editor defaults to /etc/alternatives/editor, which I
have now changed to vim, so I'm happy.

Either this behaviour should be changed to be in line with the man page
or the man page should be changed to be in line with the behaviour.

Thank you

Bug#326440: wx2.6-headers: wxPython headers not included in package

2007-12-03 Thread Bernhard Reiter
Hi Ron,

thanks for the prompt response!

On Saturday 01 December 2007 04:37, Ron wrote:
The problem at present is not that there is any fundamental
opposition to including them in the package, but rather that
people did the work to make that possible, then upstream
 refused to include it.

from what I have understood,
this was the big solution which upstream refused
or just did not show interest in.
I propose to go for a medium or small solution first.

So I'm not really sure what we can do about that, especially
if even the people who need it find it preferable to use a
local hack than to spend the time to fix it properly ...

If you refer this to the Thuban developers (which I am a part of),
there are many sensible and practical reasons to have a local hack
first. One is timing: We need to deploy on Etch as well.
So our strategy is to have something quick and then help to solve
the problem in a better way for the long run.
And we are investing _some_ time, as you can see by me responding to this
issues, but note: we are depending on a fair number of upstream packages,
for many we have suboptimal solutions and we cannot fix this at the root
all the times as this would leave us with no time for our application as well.

But given that 2.8 is still a moving target and will likely
be obsoleted by 3.x before its problems are fixed, and that
neither of those things may happen in time for the Lenny
freeze, I am willing to listen to proposals and consider
patches from people who seriously want to look into this
again and have the time to implement and test it properly.

Some suggested that a simple change in the Debian build files
could make this file be installed. This seems a small solution
given that upstream is less interested.
In parallel we should bring the issue up with upstream again.

I don't want to just move the 'fragile hack' from one
package to another though, so this is going to require
some genuine commitment from the people who need it to
get it right and fix any trouble that shakes out.

The small solution seems to be easy enough to port if wxPython changes,
so it is less fragile then hack to the setup.py structure in Debian.
It is possible to use get it right as blocker,
but it also can make Debian less attractive.

My time for Thuban development currently is very limited,
so I just cannot look very deep into the problem.
Your situation might be the same, but we share the same goal,
making the wxPython package and thus Debian more attractive.
Thanks for all the work you have done on this package!

Best Regards,
Bernhard

Bug#454131: How about switching from ipw3945 to iwl3945?

2007-12-03 Thread Ivan Zaera Avellon

As specified in the following bug that I opened in Intel's project site:

http://bughost.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=1531

The ipw3945 driver is deprecated, as it does not support multiqueue hardware,

To save time to Debian users, I would suggest to remove ipw3945 package from

Bug#454132: findimagedupes -strange results when using fp database

2007-12-03 Thread Peter Tuhársky

package: findimagedupes
version: 0.2-2

I'm trying to find dupes using -a mode (only compare files specified in
commandline). It works well.

However when I try to speed it up by creating the database, using
-a -r --fp=file
I get strange results. It finds a dupe, however it repeats the same
result later again, and later again, many times. Other words, the dupe
that has been already found, it reports later, during comparison of
totally different files! And it is doing this repeatedly.

Which of those give crackling sound? All with width=32?

The audiotestsrc never gave me crackling sound, only actual tunes,
mostly deep bass parts, and only with width/depth set to 32, 16 works
perfectly. The set volume doesn't make any difference, audio players
that don't use gstreamer play the tunes perfectly.

Then it would be nice if you could try on the commands that
give crackling to set the buffer-time and latency-time
 properties of alsasink.

You can do so by writing instead of alsasink
 alsasink buffer-time=20 latency-time=1

Try using higher values than these and please report if this makes
 any difference.

How much higher do you want? I added two zeros to each of the numbers
with no real change ...

Also please try if using alsasink device=hw:0 or alsasink
 device=demix makes a difference.

 Doesn't change anything neither, sorry.

Which bugreport do you want to have the discussion continued, btw.?

Bug#454135: man page should be improved concerning gdb -tui / gdbtui

2007-12-03 Thread Vincent Lefevre
Package: gdb
Version: 6.6.dfsg.90.20070912-1
Severity: minor

* In the synopsis, the -tui option of gdb is not listed.

* The -tui description is a bit ambiguous:

-tui Run GDB using a text (console) user interface.

It should probably say:

-tui Run GDB using an advanced text (console) user interface.

(since the default is also a text user interface).

* The man page should say that gdbtui runs gdb with the -tui option
(well, I suppose this is the case).

Bug#454144: fullscreen does not cover full screen anymore

2007-12-03 Thread Elmar Hoffmann
Package: sm
Version: 0.8-1
Severity: normal

When starting sm, the upper gnome panel is still visible. This worked
before and probably is a result of the change in 0.7-1.
My window manager is sawfish, BTW.

I have both a .profile and an /etc/profile and after some trial and

again, the current way is: a module source package works with l-m-e, or
it doesn't.

Assuming that Panthera didn't even check what's going on, here's the
 explanation:

he did, and saw that it is not a fault in the conglomeration package,
thus he reassigned it.

 Given that
I see no reason to be able to override this variable I will patch the
makefile in virtualbox-ose to not allow this.

good. i'll see when you've uploaded it and schedule a new l-m-e upload
automatically.

would be nice if you can also look into #451116 too.

Bug#454142: dbus-1-doc: Please provide devhelp integration

2007-12-03 Thread Martin Pitt
Package: dbus
Version: 1.1.2-1
Severity: wishlist
Tags: patch
User: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Usertags: origin-ubuntu hardy ubuntu-patch

Hello,

Fedora's dbus package has an XSLT to generate a devhelp index for the
dbus documentation. Sebastien recently integrated devhelp support into
the ubuntu dbus package:

  * devhelp integration:
- Add debian/doxygen_to_devhelp.xsl: XSLT from Fedora to generate a
  devhelp documentation index.
- debian/patches/dbus-1.0.1-generate-xml-docs.patch: Enable generation
of XML documentation (which will be turned into the devhelp index).
- debian/rules: Build and clean the devhelp index. Add xsltproc build
  dependency for that.
- debian/dbus-1-doc.install: Install the devhelp index, and shuffle
files around so that devhelp finds them.
- Add debian/dbus-1-doc.links: gtk-doc symlink.

I forwarded the XSLT to
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=13495.

This sounds interesting for Debian as well. Please consider applying
attached patch.

Thank you!

Martin

Bug#453681:

2007-12-03 Thread Michael Meskes
It's debatable which package is at fault, but it's definitely
unacceptable to just reassign the bug without a single line of
explanation.

Assuming that Panthera didn't even check what's going on, here's the
explanation:

linux-modules-extra calls make inside virtualbox-ose-source
with a commandline setting of MODULE=virtualbox-ose, at least it
appears it does. I wasn't able to find any docs about the way
linux-modules-extra works. Anyway, the makefile uses the variable MODULE
to refer to vboxdrv, the correct module name, but this is overriden by
the commandline option. Thus the module gets the wrong name. Given that
I see no reason to be able to override this variable I will patch the
makefile in virtualbox-ose to not allow this. But I do not see a reason
for linux-modules-extra to act this way.

Hmm, a bit surprizing that this fails; what's your /bin/sh?

Perhaps we shouldn't read these files and simply spawn the user's shell
instead, or perhaps we should force bash.

Why can't you add a name?

I just enter the desired IP an hit 'Dial' which results in '503 Service

In the log i find that twinkle contacts the IP 81.169.145.87:5060, no matter

'Use Outbound Proxy' is off.

Hmm, a bit surprizing that this fails; what's your /bin/sh?

husky:~ ls -l /bin/sh

husky:~

The bash in question is 3.1dfsg-8, which has been around a while.

Perhaps we shouldn't read these files and simply spawn the user's shell
instead, or perhaps we should force bash.

I don't know because I don't know why those files are read. While it
seems odd to me that aliasing ls would have an effect like that, that
implies that it's getting used by the login process somewhere and
perhaps replacing a raw ls with /bin/ls in whichever script it is
would be appropriate because it would bypass the aliasing.

Too bad I already had a customized esmtp file. This cut off my ability to

If my memory is correct, this isn't the first time this has happened, though
 I'm not positive.

Expected behavior is for the install script to ask before overwriting a
user-modified configuration file. I'm pretty sure this is in policy
 somewhere.

/etc/pam.d/esmtp is a conffile, so dpkg should handle this correctly.

The files are read to allow users to define stuff during their

Perhaps the alias causes an error because the shell isn't
interactive, but I don't think it would be used in Xsession itself.
And even would it be, it's not a problem as ls --color or whatever only
enables terminal control chars if run on a tty, not when the output is
redirected to a file / pipe / whatever.

Most probably a bug in the x86 emulator. It probably makes sense to try

I didn't expect twinkle works like that. of course i tried 'host

(it must be from my provider 'Strato').

i think, this bug can be closed.

Is there a way to dial an IP directly without name? Or should I open a
