Bug#474346: Installer keeps asking to insert CD1
Hi Gilberto, Sorry for the late reply, but as I already said privately, I needed some time to think about this and to prepare some things. As you have probably seen through the bug closure mail, I have uploaded some changes that should fix your problem and also some problems reported by others after additional changes in daily builds. Basically I never expected that mounting a CD on two mount points at the same time would be a problem. And in most cases it is not, otherwise we would have seen a _lot_ more reports of installation problems with Beta1. However, it obviously is a problem in some specific cases, probably either hardware or kernel driver related. As both of those subjects are rather outside our scope and as it is very hard to work on something like that if you cannot reproduce it yourself, I have decided to structure things so that that problem is completely avoided. At least for now. Unfortunately there is not much I can ask you to test now as there are no full CD or DVD images that have the latest code. They will only be built after the current changes migrate to testing when we start preparing for the Beta2 release. I may contact you again when we do though. Partly to get things straight for myself, I've written a wiki page [1] that explains the issue. You may be interested to read it. Thank you very much for your report and the information you provided. It definitely helped me to define the issue and to decide on the solution. Below some comments on your last mails. Note that you can still reply to this, even though the bug report is closed. Cheers, FJP [1] http://wiki.debian.org/DebianInstaller/LennyCDSwitchingIssue On Monday 07 April 2008, Gilberto Segundo wrote: In the others installations using DVD (last 2 weeks), I verified the MD5sum from images .iso and I asked to brasero 0.6.1 verify integrity. I could not copy the files and I continued the installation without that files. Doing this, there was only one problem: The grub did not identified the Windows installed in the same HD and I had to edit the menu.lst manually. Yes, that is expected. Because you force the CD to be ejected, it is no longer mounted on /cdrom, so the installer can no longer load the additional components it needs to detect the Windows partition. Now, I am downloading the new DVD image (April 7th). This will take a long time. After I am going to try to install using it in other DVD drive and I will send the results. Bug#478719: debhelper: Debhelper::Dh_Lib breaks scripts unless script calls inhibit_log
Neil Williams wrote: Can I have an assurance that inhibit_log; will be retained - compatible with current behaviour - in future versions No. Dh_Lib is not a general-purpose library, it is a factoring out of common code that debhelper programs use. Its behavior can and will change in the future as it has in the past. (It used to be a shell library..) :-( You might as well claim that devscripts would be disallowed from using Debhelper::Dh_Lib. I can certianly see no reason for it to do so, since debhelper programs are out of devscripts' scope. ? debuild ? (upon which emdebuild is based) ? I don't want to have to duplicate Debhelper::Dh_Lib and embed a forked copy in Emdebian::Tools just because the module mangles the exit value or creates spurious generated files. Useful code could always be moved from Dh_Lib to a true general-purpose perl module, such as some of the ones in dpkg-dev. which is now frozen for Lenny. Joey, I need a solution to this bug in the next day or so because I need to upload a fixed version of emdebian-tools that can work alongside debhelper (= 7) in order to fix a release-goal bug in another part of the package. I have no desire to either reinvent Debhelper::Dh_Lib or suffer continuous breakage because of this bug. Whatever the solution, it must allow the fixed emdebian-tools package to migrate into Lenny without needing a freeze-exception. Can you at least assure me that inhibit_log will retain current behaviour until the Lenny release? That would at least allow me to workaround this bug until the common code can migrate into dpkg-dev alongside a lot of other code from dpkg-cross, Debian::DpkgCross, Cache::Apt::* and Emdebian::Tools? There is scope here for general purpose support, I agree, but that simply isn't going to happen before Lenny. If you are unwilling to fix this bug by making inhibit_log the default when the module is loaded then I need to be able to rely on current inhibit_log behaviour until such time as *all* relevant common code can be migrated into dpkg-dev *and* migrated into testing - after Lenny. -- Neil Williams = http://www.data-freedom.org/ http://www.nosoftwarepatents.com/ http://www.linux.codehelp.co.uk/ signature.asc Description: This is a digitally signed message part

Looking up a group entry with huge amount of members in AD does require a lot of LDAP searches though (one search per page and one search per member to do the DN to uid mapping). OK, I have now http://www.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=88915 The problem is that we can easily fix it but only as a local patch and the next localization export by Sun will cause problems. So it'd be good to file it upstream to Sun too so it will get fixed. The problem is that I use only Debian Lenny packages and I don't know if something is wrong for a Debian patch or it is exactly as in Sun OOo. Bug#478714: smbfs: Please provide debug symbols in samba-dbg
Steve Langasek wrote: Ted Percival wrote: There are no debug symbols available for the files in the smbfs package. Could they be included in samba-dbg too? Why do you need these? The smbfs package only contains small userspace utilities for interfacing with the kernel fs driver. Are these utilities crashing for you? I found a non-crash bug in mount.cifs[1] and hoped to use the debug symbols to get a better idea of where it was occurring without rebuilding samba myself (yet). [1] https://bugzilla.samba.org/show_bug.cgi?id=5434 Naturally I'll have to build Samba myself if I want to do any real debugging, I just thought maybe the debug symbols were left out by accident. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#478800: samba: Missing slapd dependency in init.d LSB header
Package: samba Version: 1:3.0.28a-2 Severity: important Tags: patch User: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Usertags: incorrect-dependency I discovered this problem in the Lenny based test version of Debian Edu. In it, we configure samba to fetch information from LDAP, and enable dependency based boot sequencing. Package: libnss-ldapd Version: 0.6.1 Severity: important Tags: patch User: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Usertags: incorrect-dependency When using libnss-ldapd and slapd on a machine with dependency based boot sequencing enabled, the boot script order is wrong. This is the default setting in Debian Edu. The nslcd init.d script should start after slapd, but it does not. The solution is to add a soft dependency in nslcd. Bug#478809: hpijs should not depend on hplip
Package: hpijs Version: 2.8.2+2.8.2-1 Severity: wishlist Hello, I have a headless server where my printers are connected to. According to the upstream home page (hplip.sf.net) hpijs is just what I need. I find it annoying that hpijs depenends on hplip which in turn installs a whole bunch of other packages that I neither want or need. When I understand the upstream description correctly, hpijs is a part of hplip, so when it is split out into its own package, the dependency should be the other way around, i.e. hplip should depend on hpijs. With the current situation, it is possible to have hplip installed without hpijs. I am not sure whether this makes sense, not to speak of work without errors. The packges describtion also advises to also install the hplip package, which kind of absurd when this is forced via a depends. Anyway, IMHO it would be appropriate only to suggest hplip. Bug#478815: /etc/init.d/mbmon stop kills itself.
Package: mbmon Version: 2.05-5 Severity: important Tags: patch When executing /etc/init.d/mbmon stop the script eventually calls start-stop-daemon --stop --oknodo --name $NAME --retry 9, where NAME expands to mbmon. This will stop/kill all processes of that name, _including_ the init script. The exit status of the init script is 143 on my system, but will definitely be non-zero. This means that external programs calling the init script will think it failed. One such external program is dpkg/apt when it tries to upgrade/remove the package, basically locking me into that broken version. I resolved the issue on my system by changing the above line to: start-stop-daemon --stop --oknodo --name $NAME --exec $DAEMON --retry 9 Regards, -octo -- System Information: Debian Release: lenny/sid APT prefers testing APT policy: (990, 'testing'), (500, 'unstable') Architecture: i386 (i686) Kernel: Linux 2.6.22-3-k7 (SMP w/1 CPU core) Locale: LANG=en_US.UTF-8, LC_CTYPE=en_US.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8) (ignored: LC_ALL set to en_US.UTF-8) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/bash Versions of packages mbmon depends on: ii libc6 2.7-10 GNU C Library: Shared libraries mbmon recommends no packages. -- no debconf information -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Reinstalled grub testing (version 0.97.37) which reinstalled grub-common (version 1.96+20080426-1) and problem got solved. Problem of segfault on grub-probe is still present. Bug#478661: debian-installer: Preseed hangs when installing using aptitude (debconf error)

You have two options: - make sure there is no interaction by setting the noninteractive frontend in your script (see debconf documentation) - don't run aptitude in your script, but instead use apt-install in the D-I environment; apt-install sets things up in such a way that any communication is passed through to the debconf instance used by the installer The last is _very much_ the preferred method. If the program is trying to interact by asking questions on the console instead of using debconf, then that is a bug. This is definitely not a bug in the installer, but I'm reassigning to the installation-guide as we probably should document this a bit better in the installation guide. apt-setup is already mentioned at [1]. Bug#250202: debian/README.source file for packages with non-trivial source
Russ Allbery [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Frank Küster [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: The developer's reference describes in 6.7.8 Best practices for orig.tar.gz files how to document properly any changes that need to be done to the orig.tar.gz, and recommends the name README.Debian-source. This is the only mention of that filename in devref, and README.source is not mentioned at all. As discussed on -mentors (and I believe I also filed a bug against devref), You probably mean http://thread.gmane.org/gmane.linux.debian.devel.mentors/18439/focus=18450 I believe the devref instructions are wrong. The proper location for this information is debian/copyright, which is already required to contain information about the provenance of the upstream source. I would argue that if the changes to the orig.tar.gz have been made for other reasons than DFSG-freeness, debian/copyright is the wrong place. Such reasons could be - creating a single tar.gz from multiple upstream locations or from an unpacked tree (TeXLive only distributes CD images, from which we skip the part needed for Live CDs or installation from CD) - changing the format of the upstream archive, e.g. if it comes as a ZIP file instead of tar.gz, or tar.$compression_not_supported_by_dpkg - reducing the size of the tarball to 10% by removing the included library sources, hard-linked binaries for lots of OSes/arches and/or the specialized build systems for some of them That simply doesn't fit into debian/copyright, and I think using a special README file targetted at developers is in order. Alternatively, one could use the get-orig-tar target in debian/rules, but that would probably require lengthy commens in that file explaining why this is done. If the orig.tar.gz is repackaged (at least in part) because of licening issues, then this needs to be documented *additionally* in debian/copyright. Actually, I think that name, README.Debian-source, is even better for the patch system issue, too, since it's about Debian-specific modifications of the source. It's already in the debian/ directory, so the additional Debian- seems redundant to me. Yes, you are right. So, as for this bug, I still think that the info in devref is correct, and should be included in the example in policy, if policy gives an example at all. If you think that the information in devref is incorrect, please file a bug and Cc me; I don't think we should discuss this here (although I can already say that I don't seem to agree with some things you said in the thread above). Bug#478577: piuparts: debfoster requires /proc/stat
On 01/05/08 at 01:15 +0200, Tobias Grimm wrote: Feature request: please also check where /proc should be ignored in piuparts code. One place I found is the code for the '-s' option (save tarball), which now generates a tar of my /proc You're right, I missed to test this case. I think writing back the tarball is the only place, where /proc should not be mounted. It would be nice, if /proc/* could simply be excluded, but this is possible only in Python 2.6. i'm wondering whether it wouldn't be better to directly call tar, instead of relying on the tarfile module. After all, tar is called directly to extract the tarball. Bug#478824: nfs-utils: fails to mount NFS4 shares with 1.1.2
Package: nfs-utils Version: 1:1.1.2-2 Severity: important Coin, I just discovered i could not mount my NFS4 shares again (did not try any NFS3 shares, so i don't know if it is NFS4-specific or not) ; the mount command hanged a moment and then failed with the following message: mount.nfs4: internal error In the dmesg i could find: May 1 11:06:37 Vingilot kernel: nfs: server elwin not responding, timed out May 1 11:06:46 Vingilot kernel: rpcbind: server elwin not responding, timed out Which is strange because the last character of the hostname is removed (the hostname is elwing). I then tried with the FQDN elwing.hq.duckcorp.org, and got the same result with the g of org removed. Adding an extra letter at the end of the hstname resulted in: mount.nfs4: can't get address for elwingz so i guess this may just be a cosmetic bug. I also tried to deactivate IPv6, even if it never interfered in the past, but got the same result. Both hosts were using the same exact nfs-utils version, so i checked the kernel version and both are using linux-image-2.6.24-1-xxx 2.6.24-6, one on i386, the other on amd64. I tried the easiest, to downgrade nfs-utils to 1:1.1.1-14, and everything started to work like a charm again. -- Marc Dequènes (Duck) pgpMu3SCbZmnO.pgp Description: PGP Digital Signature
Bug#477925: Adopting the Debian SCons packages

Bug#478748: gpodder: doesn't recognize new items when not on top
Hi Thomas, When an episode is inserted, it has to have a newer pubDate than the other episodes in the feed. From what I see in the feed, this is the case (episodes have a pubDate, so I can rely on the pubDate to be in currect order). Maybe you cannot rely on pubDate in this case. The dates seem older than the new items in the feed. Perhaps pubDate is the date when an article is published on the site and this date is also kept when updating the feed (monthly charts in this case). Bug#478693: Incompatibility of libc6 with kernel 2.6 ax25
First of all I don't want to run unstable or experimental. If I am not mistaken, I wrote in the original bug report that the problem houses in the upload. Hence, the source file provided by the gnu developing crew. Even their upload version glibc-2.7 has this incompatibility problem. As far as I know, kernel 2.6 is more robust in the hamradio stuff then it previous versions 2.0 2.2 2.4. But Someone forgot to tell this to the glibc maintainers, because their files are only compatible with the kernel 2.4. That means not compatible with kernel 2.0 2.2 and 2.6. So technically glibc is not compatible with kernel 2.6. Fortunately, it is only for the hamradio stuff, where it has some difficulties. Kernel 2.6 != glibc glibc = libax25 libax25 = ax25-apps, ax25-tools, node and z8530-utils2 I think it is reasonable easy to fix, but I have no experience in the upload from the kernel into the glibc. In the past Alan Cox did this, if I am not wrong. If the glibc is up to date, it is reasonable easy to update the hamradio packages. To answer your second question. No, it is not enough to use these files, because these files are wrong. The function described in these files are not compatible with the 2.6 kernel. Hence, the lib files and syscall part of these files are incompatible. A possible scenario, I use a function from libax25 which is only compatible with kernel 2.4, as stated above. This function calls the handles of the glibc, which on its turn calls the handles of the 2.4 kernel. Oops, etch is running a 2.6 kernel, the kernel has to options either it is not so terrible and ignores it, or jumps into panic. For the mkiss command called by ax25ipd, the kernel gets a panic attack. Bug#440307: Any evidence that Debian bug #440307 is still an issue?
Hi Sven I think the bug can be closed. It only appeared when i was running my computer on the amd-k7 kernel but when I switched to the 686 kernel, the bug was not there. Sorry, I asked where to report it but no one knew so I gave up, I guess it is not a Lyx bug. Now the k7 kernel has disappeared and iit points to the 686 version so I guess the bug won't appear again. Bug#447861: Any progress?
Hi, it would be nice if something could be done about this package, either: - upgrade for autoconf 2.61 and close the bug; - orphan the package or ask for its adoption; - request its removal from the archive. All three possibilities would be better than letting it rot at the current version. Outdated, likely wrong documentation is even worse than no documentation at all, IMHO. Bug#478836: whole memory occupied if screensaver interaggreagate is started within compiz
Package: compiz Version: 0.6.3~git20080115.0ea58487-1 Severity: critical Justification: breaks the whole system Hello, when /usr/lib/xscreensaver/interaggregate was started, the local console with gnome session became unusable. From a remote ssh session I saw, that all memory (1 GB RAM + 1.4 GB swap) were occupied. Also all of the CPU time were in use (mostly by xorg and compiz.real). So the computer was very busy with swapping and therefore it was difficult and timeconsuming to kill the interaggregate process. On the first view I thought that this is a problem of interaggregate, and reported it as bug #478813. But then I have started interaggreagate to reproduce the problem again. It seems to me that it is related to compiz: If compiz doesn't run, everything is fine. But with compiz there are also other screensavers which cause the problem, e.g. whirlwindwarp. Next point: It doesn't seem to help always to kill the screensaver process, but killing compiz.real leads to a usable system again.
