Bug#478790: libapache2-mod-log-sql-dbi: The backticks added to the inserts for mysql break dbi when using pgsql

2008-05-01 Thread James Cloos
Package: libapache2-mod-log-sql-dbi
Version: 1.100-12
Severity: grave
Justification: renders package unusable

Postgres does not grok the `table_name` syntax. Since that was added to
the base package the -dbi version is useless.

The base package should limit itself to cross-platforms SQL.

(Side note: my earlier bug report about insert ignore is still there; I
have to edit the .so and replace the word ignore with spaces. I hope
that the same trick will let me get rid of the backticks.)

No, thats the wrong solution. Problem is that configure script was not
deleted in clean target and put into diff.gz which doesn't preserve the

But, it seems there is no easy fix for this bug, and upstream is

Bug#474346: Installer keeps asking to insert CD1

2008-05-01 Thread Frans Pop
Hi Gilberto,

Sorry for the late reply, but as I already said privately, I needed some
time to think about this and to prepare some things.

As you have probably seen through the bug closure mail, I have uploaded some
changes that should fix your problem and also some problems reported by
others after additional changes in daily builds.

Basically I never expected that mounting a CD on two mount points at the
same time would be a problem. And in most cases it is not, otherwise we
would have seen a _lot_ more reports of installation problems with Beta1.
However, it obviously is a problem in some specific cases, probably either
hardware or kernel driver related. As both of those subjects are rather
outside our scope and as it is very hard to work on something like that if
you cannot reproduce it yourself, I have decided to structure things so
that that problem is completely avoided. At least for now.

Unfortunately there is not much I can ask you to test now as there are no
full CD or DVD images that have the latest code. They will only be built
after the current changes migrate to testing when we start preparing for
the Beta2 release. I may contact you again when we do though.

Partly to get things straight for myself, I've written a wiki page [1] that
explains the issue. You may be interested to read it.

Thank you very much for your report and the information you provided. It
definitely helped me to define the issue and to decide on the solution.

Below some comments on your last mails. Note that you can still reply to
this, even though the bug report is closed.

Cheers,
FJP

Yes, that is expected. Because you force the CD to be ejected, it is no
longer mounted on /cdrom, so the installer can no longer load the
additional components it needs to detect the Windows partition.

Now, I am downloading the new DVD image (April 7th). This will take a

Maybe, the problem occur only with the DVD disk. The CD disk is fine.

That is an interesting data point. I have never actually tried with DVDs
myself (they are just too damn big IMO :-). On the other hand, I cannot
really imagine what's so different between CDs and DVDs that they should
behave differently. There is certainly no difference in the way we produce
the images.

Did you try the CD and DVD in the same computer and in the same DVD drive?

OK. I've explained that above. For this to work again, the DVD has to be
mounted manually on /cdrom from a debug shell. Basically you have to undo

Bug#478719: debhelper: Debhelper::Dh_Lib breaks scripts unless script calls inhibit_log

2008-05-01 Thread Neil Williams
 Neil Williams wrote:
Can I have an assurance that inhibit_log; will be retained - compatible
with current behaviour - in future versions

No. Dh_Lib is not a general-purpose library, it is a factoring out of
common code that debhelper programs use. Its behavior can and will
change in the future as it has in the past. (It used to be a shell
 library..)

:-(

You might as well claim that devscripts would be disallowed from using
  Debhelper::Dh_Lib.

I can certianly see no reason for it to do so, since debhelper programs
 are out of devscripts' scope.

? debuild ? (upon which emdebuild is based) ?

I don't want to have to duplicate Debhelper::Dh_Lib and embed a forked
copy in Emdebian::Tools just because the module mangles the exit value
  or creates spurious generated files.

Useful code could always be moved from Dh_Lib to a true general-purpose
perl module, such as some of the ones in dpkg-dev.

which is now frozen for Lenny.

Joey, I need a solution to this bug in the next day or so because I need
to upload a fixed version of emdebian-tools that can work alongside
debhelper (= 7) in order to fix a release-goal bug in another part of
the package.

I have no desire to either reinvent Debhelper::Dh_Lib or suffer
continuous breakage because of this bug.

Whatever the solution, it must allow the fixed emdebian-tools package to
migrate into Lenny without needing a freeze-exception.

Can you at least assure me that inhibit_log will retain current
behaviour until the Lenny release? That would at least allow me to
workaround this bug until the common code can migrate into dpkg-dev
alongside a lot of other code from dpkg-cross, Debian::DpkgCross,
Cache::Apt::* and Emdebian::Tools?

There is scope here for general purpose support, I agree, but that
simply isn't going to happen before Lenny. If you are unwilling to fix
this bug by making inhibit_log the default when the module is loaded
then I need to be able to rely on current inhibit_log behaviour until
such time as *all* relevant common code can be migrated into dpkg-dev
*and* migrated into testing - after Lenny.

Bug#478794: git can't carry out operations on a FAT32 file system

seems to be associated with the case-insensitivity of the FAT32 system

first place). Here's a sequence of commands to demonstrate the problem:

Initialized empty Git repository in .git/
~/git-test$ ls .git

The files are on a FAT32 system because I want to be able to access them
using Windows on the same computer (in those very rare cases when I need
to boot into Windows). There doesn't seem to be any data loss, but being
able to keep revisions/backups of my files is fairly important to me,

Sorry to say so, but to me it seems this bug is still around. - At least
I have this problem while updating to Ubuntu 8.04 LTS (and even before
the upgrade).

Just to mention a nice thing: This is the ONLY Error I have in
installing/upgrading!

It can be used to understand how the feature is working. It claim
that it is possible to see in supportedControls if this range feature
is used by the server. This could be used to enable this feature at
 runtime.

I have implemented ranged retrieval of attribute values based on the
above URL and the following:
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa367017(vs.85).aspx

What is basically done is:
 - if the attribute cannot be retrieved from the results a check is
performed to see if an attribute like attribute;range=0-... is
   present
 - if this is the case these values are used and another search is
started requesting attribute attribute;range=...-* (... is replaced
from the ... of the previous attribute name).
 - this is repeated until no more results are available

This works well and doesn't need any special lookups or version
detection. Looking up a group entry with huge amount of members in AD
does require a lot of LDAP searches though (one search per page and one
search per member to do the DN to uid mapping). Maybe some kind of cache
could be implemented or there may be a smarter way to do this
translation using less searches.

(implemented in r715)

Wow. What a very useful information. OF COURSE.
It's a bug in the italian UI, it's in the langpack.

you are right ... I have started to fill this for openoffice.org package
... when I write this I realized that this is the wrong package ...

Did you also file these upstream to Sun?

OK, I have now
http://www.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=88915

The problem is that we can easily fix it but only as a local patch and
the next localization export by Sun will cause problems. So it'd be good
to file it upstream to Sun too so it will get fixed.

The problem is that I use only Debian Lenny packages and I don't know if
something is wrong for a Debian patch or it is exactly as in Sun OOo.
Sometimes ago I have reported a issue at OOo that is Debian specific and
I don't know that ...

Why do you need these? The smbfs package only contains small userspace
utilities for interfacing with the kernel fs driver. Are these utilities
crashing for you?

I found a non-crash bug in mount.cifs[1] and hoped to use the debug
symbols to get a better idea of where it was occurring without
rebuilding samba myself (yet).

[1] https://bugzilla.samba.org/show_bug.cgi?id=5434

Naturally I'll have to build Samba myself if I want to do any real
debugging, I just thought maybe the debug symbols were left out by accident.

Please stop build-depending on emacs21, since that is an old version and
should be removed some day. In fact, Emacs is only needed to make
`configure' happy, if you specify a dummy Emacs for `configure' you

Yes, that works, because the Makefile does not run Emacs when building
the package, and on installation time the emacsen flavor for which bbdb
is to be byte-compiled is used instead of the value that `configure'
puts into the Makefile (tested by building with pdebuild and installing

I discovered this problem in the Lenny based test version of Debian
Edu. In it, we configure samba to fetch information from LDAP, and
enable dependency based boot sequencing. In this configuration, the
samba process is started before the LDAP server, and thus failing to
fetch its settings from LDAP. The reason is that there is no relation
between the samba and slapd init.d scripts.

The solution is to let the samba init.d script have an soft dependency

There is a patch for it at:

Would you be able to apply this and then rebuild wordnet?

Bug#478807: libnss-ldapd: Missing boot script dependency on slapd

2008-05-01 Thread Petter Reinholdtsen

Package: libnss-ldapd
Version: 0.6.1
Severity: important
Tags: patch
User: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Usertags: incorrect-dependency

When using libnss-ldapd and slapd on a machine with dependency based
boot sequencing enabled, the boot script order is wrong. This is the
default setting in Debian Edu. The nslcd init.d script should start
after slapd, but it does not. The solution is to add a soft
dependency in nslcd. This patch solve the problem:

Index: debian/libnss-ldapd.nslcd.init
===
--- debian/libnss-ldapd.nslcd.init (revision 715)
+++ debian/libnss-ldapd.nslcd.init  (working copy)

+# Should-Stop: $remote_fs slapd
 # Default-Start: 2 3 4 5
 # Default-Stop: 0 1 6
 # Short-Description: nss-ldapd connection daemon

You can probably drop the redundant dependency on $network (already a
dependency of $remote_fs) and replace $local_fs with $remote_fs as a
hard dependency. These would be equivalent and make the dependency
list shorter. To be exact, you could make it like this:

  # Required-Start:$remote_fs $syslog
  # Required-Stop: $remote_fs $syslog
  # Should-Start: slapd
  # Should-Stop: slapd

Happy hacking,

Bug#478809: hpijs should not depend on hplip

2008-05-01 Thread Joerg Dorchain
Package: hpijs
Version: 2.8.2+2.8.2-1
Severity: wishlist

Hello,

I have a headless server where my printers are connected to. According
to the upstream home page (hplip.sf.net) hpijs is just what I need.

I find it annoying that hpijs depenends on hplip which in turn installs
a whole bunch of other packages that I neither want or need.

When I understand the upstream description correctly, hpijs is a part of
hplip, so when it is split out into its own package, the dependency
should be the other way around, i.e. hplip should depend on hpijs.

With the current situation, it is possible to have hplip installed
without hpijs. I am not sure whether this makes sense, not to speak of
work without errors.

The packges describtion also advises to also install the hplip
package, which kind of absurd when this is forced via a depends.

Anyway, IMHO it would be appropriate only to suggest hplip.

Bye,

Joerg

Joerg, are you still interested in the bbdb package and can bring it
into shape for lenny? If not, consider orphaning it so somebody else

The internal db of OOo uses Java. That is no bug in Debian... (although it's

But you can also use a connection to a MySQL or PostgreSQL database and

Bug#478433: Works on other machine (i386)

2008-05-01 Thread W. Martin Borgert
I just checked the same camera with a i386 machine and it seems
to work with amsn, at least in the preview window
(configuration). Both machines run unstable, but probably not
exactly the same packages/package versions. Maybe it's an 64 bit
issue?

Bug#478813: xscreensaver: interaggregate occupies whole memory

2008-05-01 Thread Juergen Kosel
Package: xscreensaver
Version: 5.04-2
Severity: critical
Justification: breaks the whole system

Hello,

when /usr/lib/xscreensaver/interaggregate was started,
the local console with gnome session became unusable.
From a remote ssh session I saw, that all memory (1 GB RAM + 1.4 GB swap)
were occupied. Most of it by interaggregate.
Also all of the CPU time were in use (mostly by xorg and compiz.real).
So the computer was very busy with swapping and therefore it was
difficult and timeconsuming to kill the interaggregate process.

Greetings
Juergen

Bug#478815: /etc/init.d/mbmon stop kills itself.

2008-05-01 Thread Florian Forster
Package: mbmon
Version: 2.05-5
Severity: important
Tags: patch

When executing
  /etc/init.d/mbmon stop
the script eventually calls
  start-stop-daemon --stop --oknodo --name $NAME --retry 9,
where NAME expands to mbmon.

This will stop/kill all processes of that name, _including_ the init script.
The exit status of the init script is 143 on my system, but will definitely be
non-zero. This means that external programs calling the init script will think
it failed. One such external program is dpkg/apt when it tries to
upgrade/remove the package, basically locking me into that broken version.

I resolved the issue on my system by changing the above line to:
  start-stop-daemon --stop --oknodo --name $NAME --exec $DAEMON --retry 9

This explains the problem, but I think that we still ought to fix print.m,
whose documentation (help print) lists PDF as a possible output format and
yields the cryptic error message unknown or ambiguous terminal type.

To be fair, it prints a line with a pointer right at the pdf part.

If I have some time next week I will try to create a patch for fixing this.

How to fix it? I think dropping the 'pdf' part from print()'s help
string should suffice, shouldn't it?

Bug#478401: Anyone interested?

2008-05-01 Thread Isaac M. Marcos
Main problem solved, upgrade to 2.6.24-6 active.

What was done:
Downgrade grub to stable (version 0.97-27) which removed grub-common in the
process.
Reinstalled grub testing (version 0.97.37) which reinstalled grub-common
(version 1.96+20080426-1) and problem got solved.

Problem of segfault on grub-probe is still present.

Just running grub-probe --target=drive /dev/sda reproduces the problem.

Bug#478818: sfind fails to build on modern arm cpus due to schilly build system

2008-05-01 Thread Colin Tuckley
Package: sfind
Severity: normal

The schilly build system appears to put a little bit too much trust
in uname -m. armv4l works with schillymakethingy, but on new arm
cpu's uname -m armv5tel, armv6l and in near future armv7l too.
symlinks from armv4l-linux-cc files to those others should work.
Alternatively you may consider some more standard build system

This bug will be raised to RC when the remaining strongarm (armv4l)
buildd's get upgraded. Currently 2 arm buildd's are armv5tel and
all armel buildd's are armv5tel too.

Note that this bug is unreproducable unless you are trying to build on
one of the unsupported archs.

Archs missing from the standard schilly build system are:
amd64 s390x armel armeb and maybe others

The error the terminal gives is:

I heard this is because we have two instances of debconf running (one
outside the chroot and one inside the chroot), that is all nice but it
 still hangs :(

The problem is probably that one of the programs you're trying to install
wants to communicate with the user through debconf, which conflicts with
the fact that debconf is already being used by the installer.

You have two options:
- make sure there is no interaction by setting the noninteractive frontend
in your script (see debconf documentation)
- don't run aptitude in your script, but instead use apt-install in the D-I
environment; apt-install sets things up in such a way that any
communication is passed through to the debconf instance used by the
  installer

The last is _very much_ the preferred method.

If the program is trying to interact by asking questions on the console
instead of using debconf, then that is a bug.

This is definitely not a bug in the installer, but I'm reassigning to the
installation-guide as we probably should document this a bit better in the
installation guide. apt-setup is already mentioned at [1].

Cheers,
FJP

 Hello,

 when /usr/lib/xscreensaver/interaggregate was started,
the local console with gnome session became unusable.

 Greetings

Hi Juergen,

Please, could you test this with 5.05-2? Without compiz? How does you
launch interaggregate? If starts dropping messages in the terminal about
some ClientMessage please take note that this was fixed already in 5.05.

Regards.

It seems to me that it is related to compiz: If compiz doesn't run,
everything is fine.

But with compiz there are also other screensavers which cause the

 I'd

Rather not; AFAIK only the LPPL v 1.3a or later is regarded as

Bug#478748: gpodder: doesn't recognize new items when not on top

Hello, Holger!

Thanks for your bug report.

When an episode is inserted, it has to have a newer pubDate than the
other episodes in the feed. From what I see in the feed, this is the
case (episodes have a pubDate, so I can rely on the pubDate to be in
currect order).

Maybe the feed is buggy? When does the list change, and where are items
inserted and what is the pubDate value for them if not the datetime
value of the time that the episode was added to the feed?

Thanks,

I guess a team would be an excellent choice. Brandon's knowledge of
SCons code is precious and I can help out with packaging and random
maintenance stuffs.

We can set up a team and a repository, both Alioth + SVN or Launchpad +
bzr can go. I'm more confident with the latter because Ubuntu does wide
use of it to manage projects, but the former is ok too.

Bug#250202: debian/README.source file for packages with non-trivial source

2008-05-01 Thread Frank Küster
Russ Allbery [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

 Frank Küster [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes:

 The developer's reference describes in

6.7.8 Best practices for orig.tar.gz files

how to document properly any changes that need to be done to the
orig.tar.gz, and recommends the name README.Debian-source. This is the
only mention of that filename in devref, and README.source is not
 mentioned at all.

As discussed on -mentors (and I believe I also filed a bug against
 devref),

You probably mean
http://thread.gmane.org/gmane.linux.debian.devel.mentors/18439/focus=18450

I believe the devref instructions are wrong. The proper location
for this information is debian/copyright, which is already required to
contain information about the provenance of the upstream source.

I would argue that if the changes to the orig.tar.gz have been made for
other reasons than DFSG-freeness, debian/copyright is the wrong
place. Such reasons could be

- creating a single tar.gz from multiple upstream locations or from an
unpacked tree (TeXLive only distributes CD images, from which we skip
the part needed for Live CDs or installation from CD)

- changing the format of the upstream archive, e.g. if it comes as a ZIP
file instead of tar.gz, or tar.$compression_not_supported_by_dpkg

- reducing the size of the tarball to 10% by removing the included
library sources, hard-linked binaries for lots of OSes/arches and/or
the specialized build systems for some of them

That simply doesn't fit into debian/copyright, and I think using a
special README file targetted at developers is in order. Alternatively,
one could use the get-orig-tar target in debian/rules, but that would
probably require lengthy commens in that file explaining why this is
done.

If the orig.tar.gz is repackaged (at least in part) because of licening
issues, then this needs to be documented *additionally* in
debian/copyright.

Actually, I think that name, README.Debian-source, is even better for
the patch system issue, too, since it's about Debian-specific
 modifications of the source.

It's already in the debian/ directory, so the additional Debian- seems
 redundant to me.

Yes, you are right.

So, as for this bug, I still think that the info in devref is correct,
and should be included in the example in policy, if policy gives an
example at all.

If you think that the information in devref is incorrect, please file a
bug and Cc me; I don't think we should discuss this here (although I can
already say that I don't seem to agree with some things you said in the
thread above).

Bug#478821: non-idempotent code in postinst

2008-05-01 Thread Marcin Owsiany
Package: postgrey
Version: 1.27-4
Severity: serious

The following bit is not idempotent:

|if [ ! -e $DBDIR ]; then
|mkdir -p $DBDIR
|dpkg-statoverride --update --add \
|postgrey postgrey 0700 $DBDIR
|fi

This will not do the right thing if for any reason dpkg-statoverride fails to
run on the first try. It also happens to make it hard to have $DBDIR
bind-mounted from somewhere else.

Please break this block into two parts, one to check directory exinstance and
creation, and another to fix and register permissions. Actualy, why do you need
the dpkg-statoverride call anyway? The directory does not seem to be included
in the package.. Maybe just install -d -o -g -m it?

I think writing back the tarball is the only place, where /proc
should not be mounted. It would be nice, if /proc/* could simply
be excluded, but this is possible only in Python 2.6.

i'm wondering whether it wouldn't be better to directly call tar,
instead of relying on the tarfile module. After all, tar is called
directly to extract the tarball.

Piuparts devs, what do you think?

2008-05-01 Thread Jose Carlos Garcia Sogo

 Hi,

gpgme has been unmaintained upstream for ages, obsoleted by gpgme1.0.
Also its main reverse dependency sylpheed-claws has just been requested for
removal (#466286). I will do the appropiate for the other, cryptplug, right
now.

 Cheers.

Bug#478824: nfs-utils: fails to mount NFS4 shares with 1.1.2

2008-05-01 Thread Marc Dequènes (Duck)

Package: nfs-utils
Version: 1:1.1.2-2
Severity: important

Coin,

I just discovered i could not mount my NFS4 shares again (did not try
any NFS3 shares, so i don't know if it is NFS4-specific or not) ; the
mount command hanged a moment and then failed with the following
message:

  mount.nfs4: internal error
In the dmesg i could find:
May 1 11:06:37 Vingilot kernel: nfs: server elwin not responding, timed out
May 1 11:06:46 Vingilot kernel: rpcbind: server elwin not
responding, timed out
Which is strange because the last character of the hostname is removed
(the hostname is elwing). I then tried with the FQDN
elwing.hq.duckcorp.org, and got the same result with the g of
org removed.

Adding an extra letter at the end of the hstname resulted in:
mount.nfs4: can't get address for elwingz
so i guess this may just be a cosmetic bug.

I also tried to deactivate IPv6, even if it never interfered in the
past, but got the same result.

Both hosts were using the same exact nfs-utils version, so i checked
the kernel version and both are using linux-image-2.6.24-1-xxx
2.6.24-6, one on i386, the other on amd64. I tried the easiest, to
downgrade nfs-utils to 1:1.1.1-14, and everything started to work like
a charm again.

Bug#477925: Adopting the Debian SCons packages

There was some talk of moving SCons itself to Launchpad and bzr, I don't
know where that got to but it's worth considering. OTOH, the SCons svn
layout is a bit different to the tarball layout.

There's also options like alioth+bzr as well, for amusement value.

Bug#478829: devscripts: [dcmd] doesn't handle packages from contrib or non-free

2008-05-01 Thread Michael Koch
Package: devscripts
Version: 2.10.26
Severity: normal

When using dcmd on a changes file for a package from contrib or non-free
it wants to handle the section as filename.

$ dcmd grinvin_1.0.3.dfsg.1-2_i386.changes
non-free/math
optional
grinvin_1.0.3.dfsg.1-2.dsc
contrib/math
optional
grinvin_1.0.3.dfsg.1-2.diff.gz
grinvin_1.0.3.dfsg.1-2_i386.deb
grinvin_1.0.3.dfsg.1-2_i386.changes

I tested a bit and this always happens when the section includes a '/'
character.

And so on for usblp0 .. usblp15.

Package: live-helper
Version: 1.0~a45-1
Severity: important

Hello,
I experienced a problem when lh_build raised an error that now I don't know
when and how. In other words, start-stop-daemon was originally a exit 0
script after doing lh_build again.
I had to run an interactive shell, do dpkg --reinstall install dpkg then
move start-stop-daemon to start-stop-daemon.orig and write the exit 0
script.
I think it wold be better to reinstall dpkg in chroot_dpkg remove command.

Bug#478748: gpodder: doesn't recognize new items when not on top

2008-05-01 Thread Holger Leskien
Hi Thomas,

When an episode is inserted, it has to have a newer pubDate than the
other episodes in the feed. From what I see in the feed, this is the
case (episodes have a pubDate, so I can rely on the pubDate to be in
 currect order).

Maybe you cannot rely on pubDate in this case. The dates seem older than
the new items in the feed. Perhaps pubDate is the date when an article
is published on the site and this date is also kept when updating the
feed (monthly charts in this case).

Maybe the feed is buggy? When does the list change, and where are items
inserted and what is the pubDate value for them if not the datetime
value of the time that the episode was added to the feed?

I don't think so. The feed changes daily. I'll collect some samples for
you.

Bug#478823: [Pkg-citadel-devel] Bug#478823: citadel-server: post-inst configure

2008-05-01 Thread Michael Meskes
severity 478823 important

Package will not install as follows:
 ...

Are you sure you did a full upgrade? Or did you just manually upgrade
this one package?

Tried to get more information on what was wrong:

 # sh -x /var/lib/dpkg/info/citadel-server.postinst

This only shows that you need an argument. The correct call is

sh -x /var/lib/dpkg/info/citadel-server.postinst configure

But even this wouldn't help a lot as I can see from the output that the
postinst itself is not failing but the init script that is called.

 ii libcitadel11.08-1Citadel toolbox

Could you please upgrade this one to 1.09-1 as available in sid? We
might need a versioned dependency here if this solves it.

Thanks.

I can now sync again my palm based garmin. (Apart from the fact tah i

instead of /dev/pilot to get it work properly with this version.

Bug#478833: devscripts: popcon sorting for the *-alert scripts

2008-05-01 Thread Paul Wise
Package: devscripts
Version: 2.10.26
Severity: wishlist

I do not use the *-alert scripts because of the ridiculously high number
of issues they present and the fact that there is no way to easily
prioritise them. I would like it if they grew two options for sorting
based on popcon data. The first should use local popcon data to do the
sorting and the second should download data from popcon.d.o and use that
to sort the bugs/packages.

Bug#478693: Incompatibility of libc6 with kernel 2.6 ax25

2008-05-01 Thread Arjan van Schijndel
First of all I don't want to run unstable or experimental.

If I am not mistaken, I wrote in the original bug report that the
problem houses in the upload. Hence, the source file provided by the
gnu developing crew. Even their upload version glibc-2.7 has this
incompatibility problem.

As far as I know, kernel 2.6 is more robust in the hamradio stuff then
it previous versions 2.0 2.2 2.4.

But Someone forgot to tell this to the glibc maintainers, because
their files are only compatible with the kernel 2.4. That means not
compatible with kernel 2.0 2.2 and 2.6. So technically glibc is not
compatible with kernel 2.6. Fortunately, it is only for the hamradio
stuff, where it has some difficulties.

Kernel 2.6 != glibc

glibc = libax25

libax25 = ax25-apps, ax25-tools, node and z8530-utils2

I think it is reasonable easy to fix, but I have no experience in the
upload from the kernel into the glibc. In the past Alan Cox did this,
if I am not wrong.

If the glibc is up to date, it is reasonable easy to update the
hamradio packages.

To answer your second question. No, it is not enough to use these
files, because these files are wrong. The function described in these
files are not compatible with the 2.6 kernel. Hence, the lib files and
syscall part of these files are incompatible.

A possible scenario, I use a function from libax25 which is only
compatible with kernel 2.4, as stated above. This function calls the
handles of the glibc, which on its turn calls the handles of the 2.4
kernel. Oops, etch is running a 2.6 kernel, the kernel has to options
either it is not so terrible and ignores it, or jumps into panic. For
the mkiss command called by ax25ipd, the kernel gets a panic attack.

Hi Sven
I think the bug can be closed. It only appeared when i was running my

was not there. Sorry, I asked where to report it but no one knew so I gave
up, I guess it is not a Lyx bug. Now the k7 kernel has disappeared and iit
points to the 686 version so I guess the bug won't appear again.

Bug#447861: Any progress?

2008-05-01 Thread Sven Joachim
Hi,

it would be nice if something could be done about this package, either:

- upgrade for autoconf 2.61 and close the bug;
- orphan the package or ask for its adoption;
- request its removal from the archive.

All three possibilities would be better than letting it rot at the
current version. Outdated, likely wrong documentation is even worse
than no documentation at all, IMHO.

Bug#478836: whole memory occupied if screensaver interaggreagate is started within compiz

2008-05-01 Thread Juergen Kosel
Package: compiz
Version: 0.6.3~git20080115.0ea58487-1
Severity: critical
Justification: breaks the whole system

Hello,

when /usr/lib/xscreensaver/interaggregate was started,
the local console with gnome session became unusable.
From a remote ssh session I saw, that all memory (1 GB RAM + 1.4 GB swap)
were occupied.
Also all of the CPU time were in use (mostly by xorg and compiz.real).
So the computer was very busy with swapping and therefore it was
difficult and timeconsuming to kill the interaggregate process.

On the first view I thought that this is a problem of interaggregate,
and reported it as bug #478813.
But then I have started interaggreagate to reproduce the problem again.
It seems to me that it is related to compiz: If compiz doesn't run,
everything is fine.

But with compiz there are also other screensavers which cause the
problem, e.g. whirlwindwarp.

Next point: It doesn't seem to help always to kill the screensaver process,
but killing compiz.real leads to a usable system again.

Greetings
Juergen

With a large number of games the Games menu becomes unweildy. Thus a

only be used if there are more than three entries (the gnome guidelines

Bug#478841: menu: please include ktsuss in su-to-root

2008-05-01 Thread Yves-Alexis Perez
Package: menu
Severity: wishlist

Hi,

ktsuss is a GTK application to gain root, a bit like gksu but without gnome
dependencies.

It'd be nice to have it included in su-to-root.

Attached patch should work for this.

Cheers,
