Bug#490134: preserve-env option does not preserve environment
Package: gksu Severity: normal Version: 2.0.0-5 The preserve-env option does not work as advertised: --preserve-env, -k Preserve the current environments, does not set $HOME nor $PATH, for example. As a testcase: % export FOO=bar % gksu -- /bin/sh -c echo FOO=\$FOO FOO= % gksu -k -- /bin/sh -c echo FOO=\$FOO FOO= I would have expected that, when specifying -k, gksu would preserve the FOO environment variable for the target program. At least in gksudo mode, specifying --preserve-env seems to just toggle passing -H to sudo, which toggles whether HOME is preserved: % gksu -- /bin/sh -c echo HOME=\$HOME HOME=/root % gksu -k -- /bin/sh -c echo HOME=\$HOME HOME=/home/lamby To really have Preserve the current environments semantics, shouldn't -H be replaced with -E? Bug#490136: Please provide a mechanism to determine the result of the target program
Package: gksu Version: 2.0.0-5 Severity: wishlist gksu should provide a mechanism to allow programs to determine the result of both the priviledge escalation and the target program. Currently if a program needs to gain superuser access, it may call upon gksu to execute a particular program, but it cannot determine the return code of the target program nor know whether the password-entry stage was successful as gksu returns zero in all cases. (!) Workarounds I am currently employing involving writing to a seperate status file and reading that upon returning from gksu. It is important to distinguish between an escalation failure and a non-zero exit code from the target binary as calling programs need to know whether to retry execution. At the very least, gksu should return with an exit status matching that of the called program, perhaps using a reserved and rarely-used exit code to denote an inability to escalate the user's priviledges and other such errors. (As this could still cause a collision, an additional (or specified) file- descriptor could be employed to obtain the exit status of the target binary.) Bug#474626: #474626: still happens here
Petter Reinholdtsen, 2008-07-08 23:49:30 +0200 : [Roland Mas] I'm just back from the Libre Software Meeting, where I fell in love with Openstreetmap. I'm trying to use JOSM, but I run into the same bug as reported as #474626. This is with an up-to-date sid system, running either JAVACMD=/usr/bin/jamvm josm or josm directly. I tested JAVACMD=/usr/bin/jamvm josm in my sid chroot where I log in using ssh -X, and josm worked just fine there. I got the GUI up and running, and downloaded OSM data for my local area just fine. A minor visual glitch when I zoomed in on the map was the only obvious problem I saw. Hm. I managed to get it running in a sid Qemu too, but not in a clean account on my main box. I guess I'll try to sort-of-bisect between these two environments. Maybe additional packages create conflicts, or a library from the wrong JVM/JRA/Jwhatever is loaded, since there are a few Jthings installed here (mainly for Openoffice, apparently). found 461581 6.2.11-1 thanks Hi Frank, Looking at boincmgr's code didn't give a hint for this bug, therefore I built boinc wiht wxwidgets2.8 from experimental today to see if this is probably a wxwidgets bug, and indeed it seems so. If boincmgr is built with wxwidgets2.8, scrolling is possible with the mouse wheel even if the mouse pointer is not over the scroll bar. Thanks a lot for your help! So we are now waiting for wxwidgets2.8 to enter unstable. Let's hope this will happen soon (but I'm aware of a sort of fight for wx2.8 to enter Debian). I was replying to this email when I saw your replies on bts (sadly I didn't receive those communications). Anyhow, I can confirm the bug is still present in 6.2.11-1 . Bug#487805: Thoughts on Bacula passwords
On Mon, 30, Jun, 2008 at 09:54:48AM -0500, John Goerzen spoke thus.. One consideration to generating the passwords at install time is that we then can't ship a working installation out of the box (or it would be considerably complex). bacula-dir needs to know the password to bacula-sd, bacula-fd, etc. and these services could be installed in any order. There is an entry in README.Debian about this already, but I could also add notes to the config files themselves. I agree that the current situation is not great. I want to get 2.4.0 out there before mucking around in postinst scripts, but would like to address this. I had a similar problem with gridengine and solved it through the use of shared debconf questions. I can look into adding this to the bacula packages if you want (although probably not for at least about 10 days). Mark -- Mark Hymers mhy at debian dot org I never make predictions. Bug#490005: [Pkg-kde-extras] Bug#490005: Bug#490005: [ktorrent] ktorrent requires many kde4 packages
Hi, Wednesday 09 July 2008, Valerio Passini rašė: Thank you for your quick reply. From your message I understand that the solution is simple, however maybe it was better to rename the new ktorrent (v3.x) instead of the old one (v2.2). This just seems matter of personal choice, but I've been confused by it (I admit I'm a poor user :)). If you don't want to change the package name, then you can close this bug just now. Ciao! It was my choice to make 3.1 ktorrent default one even if it pulls in kde4 libraries. My reasoning is explained in NEWS and README.Debian. I also know that some people might not want to upgrade. Hence ktorrent2.2 is also available. -- Modestas Vainius [EMAIL PROTECTED] signature.asc Description: This is a digitally signed message part.

Bug#489764: workaround found
Just for record: I've solved my problem. The bug is really server-side. SVN client does not issue any additional http requests, and does not re-use GSSAPI token. It is server who re-validates the GSSAPI token million times. You can find all the details in subversion/mod_dav_svn/authz.c:allow_read() function. In SVN 1.5, there is SVNPathAuthz short_circuit directive, which fixes the problem (at least for me). The directive is dangerous -- see http://archives.devshed.com/forums/development-94/svnauthorizationshortcircuit-or-something-similar-2278264.html for some details. So, this bug looks like a design feature. However, from user point of view, it is very strange to get incomplete checkout with success status. With best regards, Alexandra. -- Alexandra N. Bug#349241: Hurd: gnupg 1.4.2 error on start
tags 349241 help severity 349241 wishlist thanks Hi, Package: gnupg Version: 1.4.2 (GNU/Hurd) When starting gnupg without parameters, the programs terminates with the error message gpg: can't lock memory: (os/kern) failure. Since this has been reported quite some time ago, I would appreciate if a hurd user could verify the presence of this bug in current combinations of gnupg (1.4.9) and current hurd kernels Also a suggested fix, if in the domain of gnupg, would be welcome. However, as hurd is not a release port, fixing this is a wishlist item. thanks, Thijs -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Bug#490149: upx: Linux kernel 2.6.26 packed using upx fails to boot
Package: upx-ucl Version: 2.01-1 Tags: upstream d-i Forwarded: http://sourceforge.net/tracker/?func=detailaid=2014835group_id=2331atid=102331 Starting with the about to be released upstream version 2.6.26 of the Linux kernel, a kernel (i386, 486 flavor) packed using upx will fail to boot with: snip SYSLINUX 3.70 etc. boot:expert Loading linux.. Loading initrd.gzready. Probing EDD (edd=off to disable)... ok /snip And then the emulator crashes (both VirtualBox and qemu), or on real hardware the system reboots. The issue was first seen with the current unstable version of upx (3.01), but has also been reproduced with other currently available versions of upx in Debian: 2.01 (stable) and 3.03 (experimental). Cause is a change introduced early in the 2.6.26 development cycle that adds support for a payload inside the kernel image. The Debian 2.6.25 kernel is also affected as the relevant change has been backported for that version. Earlier kernels (Debian 2.6.24, pristine 2.6.25) will boot correctly when packed with upx. For further details see the upstream bug report or the even more detailed mail sent to the linux kernel mailing list: http://lkml.org/lkml/2008/7/10/9. Bug#490150: gtk2-engines-cleanice: [PATCH] segfault in draw_flat_box(): dereferencing NULL pointer
Package: gtk2-engines-cleanice Version: 2.4.0-1.1 Severity: critical Justification: breaks unrelated software Version 2.4.0 does not check for possible NULL pointers supplied to strncmp() in draw_flat_box() in cleanice-draw.c, line 1013. This breaks unrelated software (noticed with Geeqie, bug #457098 could be also related). Please either apply the attached patch or update the package to 2.4.1 released upstream. However, in my opinion, the upstream's fix for this bug is not fully correct (it fixes the segfault but changes the operation of the code in a way incompatible with the docs on GtkTreeView). Meanwhile I am trying to contact the upstream by e-mail. Can somebody please reassign this bug against flyspell then: dlocate flyspell shows three packages. That depends on the spellchecker engine you use under emacs, ispell or aspell, not on flyspell.el or ispell.el. I think I was who reassigned most of those words to scowl, since they were not present in any of the wordlists. I kept under iamerican those that were present in a wordlist. While aspell-en uses scowl as base for creating the english aspell dicts, it uses it as prepared by upstream (is the same upstream as scowl). Not sure if this suffers of the same problems with different sizes plain scowl had. If you are using ispell, ispell base wordlists are wamerican and wbritish, probably with some extra words (I see below that iamerican accepts more words than just wamerican). If contents in any of them is changed, iamerican and ibritish (and so ispell) may need a rebuild after the new contents. Also please tell me if I should adjust my missing word reporter script: { cat EOF Package: scowl Severity: wishlist There is no simple reply to this, the package that should receive receive bug reports depends on the actual word you find missing. I suggest you to check which spellchecker are you actually using under emacs (preferrably move to aspell if not already using it). Note that this is not either of ispell.el or flyspell.el, these are the emacs interfaces to the spellchecker, not the spellchecker itself. If using aspell, file bug reports against aspell-en, if using ispell against iamerican. Those reports will need further check to know if they affect only one dict or more of them. Also note that for size reasons dict packages for spellchecking may not use the equivalent to the huge wordlists. By the way, I checked that all the above (s/linqua/lingua/) words are present in the huge wordlists. Not all words need to be in all wordlists, size is for something. If you think those words should be in all english (or at least in all british or american separately) dictionaries for spellchecking, may be some of those bugs need a reassign. Package: elisa Version: 0.3.5-3 Severity: critical Justification: breaks the whole system Elisa freezes my system completely when running. I used Elisa a few times. Perhaps some debconf notice would be useful? I'm using them almost excusively in my servers ... scsi-SATA_SAMSUNG_HD501LJS0MUJ1DP612964 [that's from udev 0.114-2 (testing)] scsi-1ATA_SAMSUNG_HD501LJ_S0MUJ1DP612964 This is more interesting, but I cannot reproduce the issue on my system (especially the lack of the underscore, are you totally sure that it was present in the old names?). The listenings are copied verbatimly (but I've just rechecked). The 1 in 1ATA looked like some bit error to me, but redownloading/reinstalling didn't fix it (and apt-secure should catch such things anyway, shouldn't it?). Actually I just saw that udev 0.114-2 (from testing) doesn't work, too. In my /etc/crypttap the entries have a _hyphen_ like follows: ata-SAMSUNG_HD501LJ-S0MUJ1DP612964-part3 That must have been the udev right before 0.124-2, but that's no longer on my platter, so I couldn't test. Bug#443728: apt-file update should not have to be run as root
Hi, i generally run apt-file under my standard user account. however to run an update, i need to switch to the root account. this seems rather unnecessary since the apt-file cache could just as easily be stored in ~/.config/apt-file, rather than /var. this is a request for apt-file to work without root priviledge. The idea behind storing this centrally is that not every individual user needs to download the large Contents files, but that these are in one place. I think this is very similar to 'apt-get update' which also requires root, even though things like apt-cache search or apt-get source work under a normal user account. I'm inclined to mark it as wontfix, Stefan? Thijs -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Bug#405927: apt-file: Please add a cron entry for resynchronizing the package contents
Hi, Could you please add a cron entry for resynchronizing the packages contents from their sources every days? I don't think this is a good idea. For systems running (old)stable, the Contents lists hardly change over the lifetime of the system. Downloading them every day for every system that has apt-file installed seems very wasteful. I would compare 'apt-file update' to 'apt-get update' which is something that is ran at moments that the administrator seems fit, not automatically daily. Bug#486528: Please enhance mke2fs to respect the RECOMP area
Stephen, as the current maintainer of zipl I'm trying to understand the reasoning behind your enhancement requests. The way I understand it you want to be able to use zipl on a CMS formatted disk to enable it for IPL. zipl does support CMS formatted disks (although not with the DIAG access method) and it seemed to work during a quick test (see below). Could you provide a transcript of the commands you entered and the system responses you got to further illustrate the problem that you are encountering when trying to use zipl on/ipl from a CMS formatted minidisk? Bug#490160: libqt4-webkit / arora: SIGBUS on sparc
Package: libqt4-webkit Version: 4.4.0-3 Severity: grave The web browser arora (which uses QT's WebKit as rendering engine) crashes with SIGBUS on Sparc with the default configuration (which IIRC tries to load the Arora project home page). One more strange thing that is a regression, if I remember correctly. That's why I am following up on the same bug, even if the symptoms are very different. While evince displays correctly the file at http://fly.isti.cnr.it/riservato/debian-bug/ja2410-fig10.eps, it cannot display (any more) the file at http://fly.isti.cnr.it/riservato/debian-bug/ja2410-fig10+p.eps, which is the same as the previous file but with a tiff preview added: evince just load the latter and shows a Loading... sign, without any errors. Bug#474626: #474626: still happens here
Roland Mas, 2008-07-10 09:03:58 +0200 : Hm. I compared the results of aptitude search ~djava | grep ^i in the Qemu and the main box after installing Openoffice, and found no relevant difference (apart from some Mozilla-related libs). Still runs in the Qemu, still doesn't outside. I'll try diffing the outputs of strace, just in case, but I'd appreciate some more ideas on how to debug that.
