Bug#498562: ITP: last-align -- genome-scale comparison of biological sequences.
Package: wnpp Severity: wishlist Owner: Charles Plessy [EMAIL PROTECTED] Package name: last-align Version : 7 Upstream Author : Martin C. Frith and Paul B. Horton [EMAIL PROTECTED] URL : http://last.cbrc.jp/ License : GPL-3+ Programming Lang: C++ Description : genome-scale comparison of biological sequences. LAST is software for comparing and aligning sequences, typically DNA or protein sequences. LAST is similar to BLAST, but it copes better with very large amounts of sequence data. Here are two things LAST is good at: . * Comparing large (e.g. mammalian) genomes. * Mapping lots of sequence tags onto a genome. . The main technical innovation is that LAST finds initial matches based on their multiplicity, instead of using a fixed size (e.g. BLAST uses 11-mers). This allows us to map tags to genomes without repeat-masking, without becoming overwhelmed by repetitive hits. To find these variable-sized matches, it uses a suffix array (inspired by Vmatch). To achieve high sensitivity, it uses a discontiguous suffix array, analogous to spaced seeds. The package is almost ready, but I will wait that GCC 4.3 issues are solved upstream. Manpages are missing and I will not write some during the freeze. This package will be part of a larger effort to make Debian the best platform for large-scale genomics. Bug#238833: Processed: please read the bugreport until the end to understand why I reassigned this bug
On Wed, Sep 10, 2008 at 5:09 AM, Debian Bug Tracking System [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Processing commands for [EMAIL PROTECTED]: retitle 238833 wrong rendering fallback Bug#238833: general: not all fonts contain glyphs for all codepoints Changed Bug title to `wrong rendering fallback' from `general: not all fonts contain glyphs for all codepoints'. If you need a fallback Unicode font, you can look at the xfonts-unifont and ttf-unifont packages in unstable testing. I'm currently maintaining the unifont package. The current version of those packages contains a glyph for every visible code point in the Unicode 5.1 Basic Multilingual Plane. The TrueType font will look best at 12pt (and might look outright unacceptable at smaller point sizes). However, beware the Jabberwock, er, I mean the combining marks. The xfonts-unifont font encodes glyphs for them, but they are not superimposed on a preceding glyph. The ttf-unifont font displays combining marks superimposed over a following glyph, rather than over the preceding glyph as per the Unicode Standard. So combining marks aren't handled in accordance with the Unicode Standard in either version yet, but at least they only form a small fraction of the total Basic Multilingual Plane. I made a new version of the TrueType font that ought to render combining marks in accordance with the Unicode Standard. Unfortunately, the font renders perfectly under Windows XP but not under GNOME on Debian. I haven't tried it under KDE and would be interested in feedback if someone wants to try it under KDE. The new version of the TrueType font is at http://unifoundry.com/unifont-5.1.20080907.ttf.gz (You'll have to gunzip it before you use it.) I just barely got the current version of the unifont package in with the lenny freeze, and I haven't assembled yet another version with the above 2008-09-07 TrueType font. It was about all I could do to finish all the missing glyph renderings before the freeze -- there wasn't time for everything I would have liked to accomplish. If there is interest though, I could try to have one more version brought into lenny that includes the very latest TrueType font. One reason I didn't bother so far is because its combining marks don't render correctly under GNOME, and I think it is probably a more generic X11 bug not specific to GNOME (though I haven't had time to check the font with KDE). The combining marks in that latest TrueType font do have an advance width of zero so I am fairly confident that the bug is not with the TrueType font. See bug #497326 for more mention of this. I also posted a message about TTF Unicode combining marks on the debian-x list about half a week ago. I also have a file containing a list of every code point in the Unicode 5.1 Basic Multilingual Plane that should have zero advance width (i.e., the combining marks), with one code point per line in hexadecimal. The file is at http://unifoundry.com/pub/combining-5.1.dat I entered all the data in that file, and I'm placing it in the public domain to help spread support for Unicode. I have just removed the symbols files from the glibc, because dpkg-dev currently doesn't have support for ignoring private symbols from libraries. This causes problems like this one on nscd: Depends: glibc-private, libc6 (= 2.8) Until this feature is supported in dpkg-dev, this bug is a wontfix. You have two solutions: - do like all other libraries and generate a dependency on libc6 for private symbols as well - add -xglibc-private to the dpkg-shlibdeps calls in the glibc source package to skip that dependency I would go for the second solution. Package: python-central aptitude often fails with the following: *Traceback (most recent call last):* * Fi*le* /usr/bin/pycentral, line 1373, in ?* *main()* * File /usr/bin/pycentral, line 1367, in main* *rv = action.run(global_options)* * File /usr/bin/pycentral, line 952, in run* *pkg.remove(runtimes, remove_script_files=True)* * File /usr/bin/pycentral, line 697, in remove* *default_runtime.remove_byte_code(self.private_files)* *AttributeError: 'NoneType' object has no attribute 'remove_byte_code'* * *I've devised a simple workaround which will at least allow aptitude to finish the job it's doing, although it doesn't address the core issue and will likely leave several package files undeleted when using aptitude's purge/remove command.. (I'm guessing it might be that some of python-central's syntax was designed for python v2.5, instead of 2.4) .. Anyway here goes: Simply change line 696 in /usr/bin/pycentral (in the python-central package) from: if self.private_files: To: if self.private_files and hasattr(default_runtime,'remove_byte_code'): * *
Bug#489771: New Build-Options field and build-arch option, please review
On Wed, 10 Sep 2008, Bill Allombert wrote: People have noticed that and already requested that we can call arbitrary targets of debian/rules with all the proper initialization done precisely for test purpose during packaging work (see #477916). I must say, I really do not like this direction. debhelper and cdbs and similar sytsems are the places to provide this help where people want to use it, in my opinion. We have a lot of past experience with that and we have the compatibility level to handle smoothing transitions. (And to provide a way for people to never transition, I admit, and I see where that's the problem that you're solving, but I prefer that problem to the problems introduced by the instability of having the package build infrastructure change the input to the builds without coordination with the package.) I like to say I concurr with Russ. There are some much difference between packages that distributions wide default does not make sense. Such change would rather lead me to hardcode values of DEBIAN_BUILD_OPTIONS in debian/rules if they are used blidly. But more and more people want to be able to change distribution wide default: Emdebian wants to enable nodocs and nocheck by default, other want to be able to enable hardening options by default and I agree with them that official support for such a facility is desirable. See also #498355 and #498380 for such requests from Emdebian. Bug#356492: ITP: spout -- Tiny abstract bw 2D cave-shooter
Hello Javier This game so rocks, i played it long before it was ITP'd, and still it's not in Debian. Unbelievable? Disappointing? I don't know what it is... Are you still working on it? Would you mind me finishing the package and maintaining it in Debian? I don't mind co-maintainers... Man, I have an ITP I haven't touched in months, but I am coming back to health, so yes, I would like to finish the package myself, but yes, I would also love to have you as a co-maintainer. Is that good? I am sorry I haven't been able to get it in post-Etch, but working with you would definitely be good. So let's make it work. Good to hear, get well soon. What's your hiscore? I have the latest upload at http://sid.ethz.ch/debian/spout/ The reject reasons are in the bug number and should be easy to fix. Bug#498566: aptitude::Keep-Recommends false doesn't seem to work; automatic packages still kept without dependency
Package: aptitude Version: 0.4.11.9-1 Severity: normal The aptitude README says that aptitude::Keep-Recommends defaults to false. Despite that, whether I rely on this default or I explicitly set aptitude::Keep-Recommends to false in my ~/.aptitude/config, aptitude still keeps automatic packages installed even though no package Depends on them, as long as some installed package Recommends them. Specific test case: hal Recommends libsmbios-bin, but no package Depends on libsmbios-bin. With hal installed, I installed libsmbios-bin, and then marked it as automatic, but aptitude did not remove it. - Josh Triplett -- Package-specific info: aptitude 0.4.11.9 compiled at Aug 3 2008 22:25:00 Compiler: g++ 4.3.1 Compiled against: apt version 4.6.0 NCurses version 5.6 libsigc++ version: 2.0.18 Ept support enabled. Bug#495768: tex4ht: make all useful scripts (oolatex) accessible
severity 495768 wishlist tags 495768 moreinfo thanks Hello, On Wed, 20 Aug 2008, Drew Parsons wrote: The support scripts such as oolatex are all filed away in /usr/share/tex4ht/, so running oolatex file does not work. Only htlatex and a small number of others are available in /usr/bin. The recommended way to run the TeX4HT system is to use the mk4ht program which is provided in user bin. Perhaps I could add a remark about this on the man page. I don't think it is a good idea to move too many of the scripts in /usr/share/tex4ht to /usr/bin. We have already had one problem with /usr/bin/ht conflicting with another entirely un-related package. I think the most common input format for tex4ht would be a LaTeX file, and the most common output format would be either xhtml or OpenDocument (odt). The html format is already available via htlatex, so the only script (for the more common formats) missing in /usr/bin is oolatex. If there is some consensus on this then I suppose one could consider adding _only_ oolatex to /usr/bin. However, I am afraid that this may then lead to requests from users of ConTeXt and so on :-) The older bug #450415 was closed since the use of mk4ht was augmented and documented on the manpage. On the same, I am downgrading this bug report to wishlist. Suggestions and criticisms welcome! Kapil. -- signature.asc Description: Digital signature

Bug#497744: git-buildpackage: Please allow for specificiation of separation -S builder
Hi Daniel, On Wed, Sep 03, 2008 at 04:56:48PM -0700, Daniel Moerner wrote: Hello. I would like to request that git-buildpackage include the ability to specify a separate command if you only want to build the source of the package. Since I prefer to use pdebuild with cowdancer to build my packages, calling git-buildpackage -S currently creates the pbuilder environment, installs all the build-deps, and then just exports the completed source package. Unless I'm missing an obvious pdebuild flag, it would be far simpler to allow the user to specify two build commands: one for the building of the package, and one for building of just the source. For example, bzr-builddeb currently implements this functionality. You can of course use a shell alias: alias git-buildsource='git-buildpacakge --builder=dpkg-buildpackage \ -rfakeroot -uc -us -S' I'm a bit reluctant to add even more commandline options although your suggestion makes some sense if you want to do source only uploads. -- Guido -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#498568: Debian cannot be installed on bootable SD cards
Package: debian-installer Version: 20080522 http://wiki.gpl-devices.org/wiki/Installing_Linux_on_booting_SD_card Recently, BIOS vendors have been starting to implement a 'boot from SD card' feature, much like they have added 'boot from USB memory stick' some years ago. The only SD-card host controller that I've seen this implemented for is SDHCI compliant host controllers. While this is a nice feature to support, for most systems it is just a gimmick and not something neccessarry. However, there are hand-held devices such as netbooks in the pipeline which do not have any other mass storage device. No hard disk and no IDE-attached flash disk or the like. They just have one (more likely two or more) SD card slots and you install and store not only your data but the entire operating system on that SD card. Furthermore, there are products like Samsung moviNAND which are basically a SDcard in a BGA package that can be soldered onto a PCB. So from a protocol and software point of view it is a SD card, but it is mechanically soldered onto the board. Such device have gained some popularity in ARM-based designs, but we'll likely see them in the x86 world, too. Installer requirements The distribution installation initrd needs to 1. include and auto-load the sdhc.ko and sdhci_pci.ko kernel modules 2. create the /dev/mmcblk* device nodes as per udev/hotplug events The actual distribution installation program needs to 1. recognize /dev/mmcblk* as block devices that can be used as target device 2. use a grub-install or similar program that can discover the bios drive number to /dev/mmcblk* device name mapping debian-installer doesn't currently (debian testing installation image of 2008-09-08) support this, and thus Debian cannot be installed on a system with bootable SD card. -- - Harald Welte [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://linux.via.com.tw/ VIA Open Source Liaison -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#498437: molly-guard: Preventing the accidental shutdown of hosts in remote datacenters
tags 498437 confirmed help thanks also sprach Francois Marier [EMAIL PROTECTED] [2008.09.10.0332 +0200]: So I thought that molly-guard would be a great place to perform the following check: If the server is setup to be reboot-only then molly-guard would ask users that shutdown -h would have to type halt to confirm that they really want to halt the system. Thanks to your colleague Andrew Ruthven, molly-guard 0.4 learnt to use /etc/molly-guard/run.d and what you describe sounds like a very simple script in there. If you wrote such a script and tested it, made it configurable (i.e. reboot-only in /etc/molly-guard/rc), then I see no reason why I wouldn't add it to the package. Looking at the package though, I see that it's likely not going to support your use case right now, since I only export $MOLLYGUARD_CMD, not $MOLLYGUARD_CMDARGS. I am holding off Debian work for another two weeks, so unless you send in a patch by then, I'll look into it in October. -- .''`. martin f. krafft [EMAIL PROTECTED] : :' : proud Debian developer, author, administrator, and user `. `'` http://people.debian.org/~madduck - http://debiansystem.info `- Debian - when you have better things to do than fixing systems digital_signature_gpg.asc Description: Digital signature (see http://martin-krafft.net/gpg/)

Bug#497584: ITP: cosign -- Web single sign-on for intranets
On Wed, 2008-09-10 at 20:34 -0300, Martín Ferrari wrote: On Wed, Sep 10, 2008 at 06:15, Neil Williams [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: No quite, it provides some fault-tolerance. Anyway, you're missing the point that this is targeted at a different audience. For example, I've just deployed cosign at my job, to have SSO in internal webapps that can't use something open to the world like openid. OK, this is beginning to make some sense - squeezing this into the description is going to be a challenge. :-) it works as a authentication module in apache, replacing/complementing basic auth and the such. It uses a session cookie, but you don't have it, it redirects you to the main weblogin page when you're asked for credentials or given a new service-specific cookie if you already had authenticated there. I think the mechanism is well explained here: http://weblogin.org/overview.html Hmm, that page could do with a lot of simplification. I've looked at http://weblogin.org/overview.html but I'm not sure I understand it. I'm confused about whether this is some kind of portal for use where internet access is charged / time-limited (like an internet cafe or hotel) or some kind of network filter that either blocks or allows traffic to certain websites. I'm also concerned about *why* a system would be configured to store the web logins of all users in a single location. Or is this some kind of keep-me-logged-in service like stay-alive or similar that keeps pinging the login to prevent timeouts? It's no filter or portal. It's just a system to handle authentication centrally passing tokens around in the form of cookies, I think it can be paralleled to kerberos in that idea. You can compare it with bitcard (used in rt.cpan.org) or other similar projects, like Shibboleth, pubcookie, mod_auth_tkt and openSSO. It's difficult to explain, I guess all those websites will do a better job :) It is difficult to explain but if the description would contain little nuggets like centrally handles authentication using tokens in a similar manner to kerberos and then give a bit of detail about how it compares with those similar projects (the ones already in Debian). If it is trying to be something like OpenId for intranets, then it shouldn't get involved in the cookies themselves, the sites requesting authentication need to be modified to support the cosign method, without revealing the login details of the users. I can't work out whether it is doing that or not. This requires no modification to applications that were already relying on apache authentication. In any case I think it's not me or you who decide how it should be implemented :) True, but the description probably needs to give some hints about how it could be implemented. I'm confused about why users would want to trust cosign to keep all their weblogin usernames and passwords - unless those usernames and err... I don't understand you :) This is thought for places when you can trust a central place to manage users (think ldap, kerberos, nis, etc), and in any case, cosign doesn't keep the usernames and passwords, it just relies on any authentication scheme you want to use. That is what needs to be set out in the description - if that had been put in at the start (or even mentioned on the website), it would have saved a lot of confusion. passwords are part of the same intranet that uses cosign at which point it would seem bizarre that to fix the various login problems of a variety of websites inside an intranet, the admin would add another login that knows all the login details of all the users. Well, that's exactly the point, you have 20 websites, each with its own htaccess file, and you as a sysadmin hate that. You can configure ldap/krb/etc and make apache authenticate against that on _each_ server, which will solve the single password issue, but the users still have to enter user/pass each time, also you need to protect the channel because the passwords are sent in the clear. OK, so cosign is passing on existing authentication from one server to another within an intranet, sort of. I don't think I understand it sufficiently to rewrite the description but I think if you have set out the main points yourself, it just a bit of reorganising. The description should cover these basic ideas: 1. cosign is a system to handle authentication centrally, passing tokens around in the form of cookies, in a similar manner to kerberos. 2. it works as a authentication module in apache,replacing/complementing basic auth and the such. It uses a session cookie, but you don't have it, it redirects you to the main weblogin page when you're asked for credentials or given a new service-specific cookie if you already had authenticated there. 3. it is for places when you can trust a central place to manage users (think ldap, kerberos, nis, etc), and in any case, cosign doesn't keep the usernames and passwords, it

Bug#388065: reassign
clone 388065 -1 reassign -1 system-config-printer thanks Le mercredi 10 septembre 2008 à 20:34 +0200, Holger Levsen a écrit : based on the assumption that a bug report titled My PC should warn me when I try to shut down while my printer is still printing clearly assumes (My PC) a default printing environment on a default desktop install (which is cups) and that bugs originating from packages should be assigned to those, I'm reassigning this to cups. (So that the cups maintainers (maybe) reassign/clone this to further printing frontends.) I wrote the above paragraph without reading the actual bug report, then I thought wait, re-read it, there must be something in there otherwise you would just reassign and so I re-read the bug report. After I've now done so, I still think reassigning to cups (and then clone and assigning the clones to kdm, gnome and xfce and keeping this bug to track the others) is sensible. Indeed this can be done in system-config-printer-applet, by listening to gnome-power-manager requests and denying them while printing. Cheers, -- .''`. : :' : We are debian.org. This is a significant change. Since libcurl4-gnutls-dev is needed as a Build-Depends, it should be listed as such in debian/control. We should not rely on other Build-Depends dragging in this package, as the dependencies of those packages can change at any time. I don't understand how the dependencies of libetpan can change at any time and why aren't reliable, but even admitting the possibility seems clear that any plugin not liking the libetpan's provided choice for curl SSL library variant would FTBS, the same as if you explicitly force the dependency and libetpan wants other (IIRC you can't have both), so I don't see the point of adding it. OTOH if plugin builds happily with any curl SSL choice but you force one against libetpan requirements you'll have a spurious FTBS, so this is a strong point against adding it :) Fixing this bug is a trivial task, but it would greatly benefit claws-mail-extra-plugins, Debian, and Ubuntu. It would also allow us to sync future versions of this package in Ubuntu. Indeed, but from my POV and unless I'm missing something it's Ubuntu packaging the one which needs the fix ;) regards, -- Ricardo Mones http://people.debian.org/~mones «Courage is your greatest present need.» signature.asc Description: PGP signature

It would be useful to explain how the page seems to imply that struct stat.st_blocks is in the same units as stat.st_blocksize and even better if you had some suggestion about how you think the text should change. The relevant stat(2) struct stat snippet is: struct stat { ... blksize_t st_blksize; /* blocksize for filesystem I/O */ blkcnt_t st_blocks; /* number of blocks allocated */ ... } The two fields use the same word, block, with two different meanings. In particular, to make use of the st_blocks field, number of blocks allocated, one may need to know the size of a block. Given st_blksize's description, blocksize for filesystem I/O, it appears that its purpose is to describe the size of the block unit used for st_blocks. Does this convey why I find these fields vague? Okay. I think part of the problem (from my upstream point of view) is that you are looking at rather old man-pages. (2.39 is about 50 releases ago.) Already by the time of your report, the upstream page mentioned the 512B figure in the text describing st_blocks. And... A suggestion for their description: st_blksize; /* file system I/O block size */ st_blocks; /* disk blocks (e.g., sectors) allocated */ Or if st_blocks is always in units of 512 B, this may be more clear: st_blocks; /* number of 512 B blocks allocated */ After my reply to your earlier mail I decided to make exactly the change in the preceing line. The change is already out, in man-pages-3.09, look here: http://www.kernel.org/doc/man-pages/online/pages/man2/stat.2.html Does this version of the page address your concerns? Bug#97500: info sections clobbered by individual commands
severity 97500 wishlist reassign 97500 texinfo thanks * Yann Dirson [EMAIL PROTECTED] [080911 08:47]: The info dir on Debian systems becomes large really, and having all individual commands in packages like binutils, id-utils, sharutils, sh-utils, fileutils, and textutils, listed in their sections does not help really, although I it may be useful to have them in the dir. I suggest to create some Individual Commands section, and possibly to force it to be the last section in the dir, to solve this problem. Adding individual command sections in all the different info pages does not sound doable. So only chance to get an command index is if it is automatically generated from the info files. This might need support from texinfo so that info pages can mark the different commands and their documentation. Once such a syntax is available (perhaps it already is, I am no info expert), there is most likely something needed to generate the specific command index also in install-info. Thus I am reassigning this to texinfo, in the hope someone there can better assess if this functionality is already somewhere or what would be needed or to forward it upstream... I must say, I really do not like this direction. debhelper and cdbs and similar sytsems are the places to provide this help where people want to use it, in my opinion. The actual support will be implemented in debhelper - all that is needed is a consistent manner to pass the same options to debhelper across a range of packages. Packages then add extra support if necessary, e.g. if a package installs docs manually instead of using dh_installdocs, then those sections of debian/rules need to be either conditionally excluded: ifeq (,$(findstring nodocs,$(DEB_BUILD_OPTIONS))) install foo.1 debian/foo/usr/share/man/man1/ ... endif or redone for debhelper support via foo.install files, etc. After Lenny, I will be filing bugs for this support - at least for the packages used in Emdebian. We have a lot of past experience with that and we have the compatibility level to handle smoothing transitions. (And to provide a way for people to never transition, I admit, and I see where that's the problem that you're solving, but I prefer that problem to the problems introduced by the instability of having the package build infrastructure change the input to the builds without coordination with the package.) There has to be coordination with the package - the package needs to support the build option, either explicitly or via debhelper. All CDBS or any other layer needs to do is pass down the option to make it accessible to debhelper (usually via DEB_BUILD_OPTIONS). I like to say I concurr with Russ. There are some much difference between packages that distributions wide default does not make sense. On the contrary, there are clear divisions where distribution-wide build options do make sense. Raphael correctly identifies nodocs and nocheck as the current Emdebian distribution-wide build options. nodocs itself needs to be refined to allow for graded levels of documentation exclusion and other build options may change the build process itself - all under the control of the particular package. If the package does not understand the option, nothing happens. e.g. Emdebian needs nodocs (or something as broad) that drops everything, from README and TODO to changelog.gz and manpages during the build, rather than after downloading. Preferably, nodocs would also lead to the mandatory compression of copyright to save more space. It is not new for DEB_BUILD_OPTIONS to break Debian Policy - supporting a distribution-wide superset of options allows the use of the set to conform to Emdebian Policy etc. Other uses of options could use graduations so that examples are dropped but not the rest, or just manpages or just HTML docs etc. Dpkg Classes will help with graduations, as long as the distro can afford to remove the files *after* the package has been downloaded. But more and more people want to be able to change distribution wide default: Emdebian wants to enable nodocs and nocheck by default, other want to be able to enable hardening options by default and I agree with them that official support for such a facility is desirable. See also #498355 and #498380 for such requests from Emdebian. Note also that Ubuntu are interested in supporting distribution-wide build options. -- Neil Williams = http://www.data-freedom.org/ http://www.nosoftwarepatents.com/ http://www.linux.codehelp.co.uk/ signature.asc Description: This is a digitally signed message part

Bug#498005: ccache: should not delete preprocessor output when -save-temps is passed to gcc
Hi Francois, On 08/09/11 08:43 +1200, Francois Marier said ... On 2008-09-10 at 17:10:43, Y Giridhar Appaji Nag wrote: Or rather, we don't delete the temporary pre-processor file. I did not look at the code too much but we shouldn't have to cache this file also. Well, that works for the first run when the output of the compilation is not in cache. Then on the second run, gcc will not be called at all so these temporary files will not be generated as the object files will be copied back from cache. Sure, I understand that. And this is exactly what happens with the .s file (the other file generated apart from the .i file). So for that option to be useful (and consistent) regardless of whether or not the temp file is in cache, then I think that you'd have to save the extra temporary files in your ~/.ccache/ directory. I agree. And the solution that I indicated would at-best make it consistent with the behaviour (creation and retaining) in case of the .s file. And now that we've thought and discussed this, I guess this is a rather specialised request, so please feel free to mark this as wontfix. Using CCACHE_DISABLE is a viable workaround I think. Bug#498578: cannot cancel opening of a mailbox
Package: mutt Version: 1.5.18-4 Severity: wishlist File: /usr/bin/mutt I have a mailbox with almost half a million messages, and it takes ages (~5 minutes) to open, even with header caching enabled. Bug#498584: Missing build dependency 'ant'
Package: bytecode bytecode fails to build currently on Ubuntu build servers.[1] The reason is that the build dependency ant is missing. Can you please fix this problem, so that I can simply file a sync request then in Ubuntu. Also last changelog entry has made it a native package. Please fix that. Bug#443322: Yes, maintain the original behaviour
Hi Yes, this is a security problem. Letting people probe usernames compromises Unix security - the behaviour must be identical, including the time taken, whether the username is valid or not (There was once a hole introduced when someone decided not to bother hashing the supplied password if the username was invalid, thereby informing attackers of username validity by the time it took to reject them on an idle machine) Unix is used in many contexts that you cannot begin to imagine - something as generic as Debian even more, so arguments of the form I can't think of a circumstance where this would be a problem any more are just display sleepwalking naivety. Just to knock the specific example of this kind of thinking, if someone steals my laptop, I don't want them having an easy life by being able to probe for usernames and then just having the passwords to guess. Another example: we run a service is a squat in Sicily, providing email to hundreds of people, but we can't afford a guard to sit by the server 24 hours a day... Please maintain regular Unix security on *all* entry points, not just the bare minumum that applies in your own particular circumstance! Don't change what ain't broke... Bug#498309: xfs filesystem corruption due to attr2 bug
dann frazier schrieb: On Tue, Sep 09, 2008 at 12:02:41AM +0200, Ralf Gross wrote: Package: linux-image-2.6-amd64 Version: 2.6.18+6etch3 I've lost 2 xfs filesystems this weekend after adding lots of acls to many files. With some help from the people of the xfs IRC channel, I could nail it down to a problem with xfs an attr2. It seems that the debian 2.6.18 kernel is missing a very important bugfix. The bug report originally comes from red hat: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=212201 This is what I found in the archibes of the xfs mailing list: http://www.linux.sgi.com/archives/xfs/2006-12/msg00104.html The filesystems that crashed had a size of 2 TB and 6 TB. xfs_repair couldn't help much. In the end I had to restore the data from the last backup. I know that packages in the stable release are only updated with important (security) fixes. But this bug can (did) cause data loss and would be worth a fix. Thanks for the report. Fixes for = important bugs are acceptable in a stable release. I've committed a fix for this which should appear in the etch snapshot builds[1] tomorrow. Would you be able to test that build on your system? I'm not sure whether you are using the i386 port or the amd64 port (the amd64 flavor is available for both). If you're using the i386 port, you should be able to grab a snapshot build with a version = 2.6.18.dfsg.1-23~snapshot.12203. Bug#64071: #64071: Automatically generated files should not go to /etc
clone 64071 -1 -2 retitle -1 menu: documentation should mislead to put generated files to /etc severity -1 minor reassign -1 menu retitle -2 lintian: check menu-methods to not write to /etc/ severity -2 wishlist block 64071 by -1 -2 * Bill Allombert [EMAIL PROTECTED] [021124 10:28]: Menu itself do not generate files in /etc automatically, it is the individual menu-method files provided by the menu managers. So I reassign This bug to general. I'm reassiging a cloned one to menu, because the menu documentation has an example with /etc in it and it could give some advice to menu-method writers what to look at. I'm reassigning an 2nd clone to lintian, as checking for rootprefix to not start with /etc sounds like an easy to do task. Otherwise I suggest this as a little gift bug, as there are some easy things to help with this that anyone should be able to do: 1) check which menu providers have an menu-method that installs files to /etc. File a bug there (with a patch as above) and mark 64071 as blocked by this bug. 2) For each of the affected packages check: Does the program really need the system wide menu file in /etc or it is a configurable location so that it can be put into directly there. (In that case, a patch to change that location and to change the menu-method script to put the file there (and perhaps removing the old generated file in /etc uppon upgrade, iff the old menu-method file was unchanged) should suffice). If the menu provider (window-manager, whatever... ) does not support to have the file at another place, perhaps it can be patched to have an alternate location that is used if there is no file in /etc, then proceed as above... If the program wants the file on a specific place in /etc, then the package can have a symlink to another file under /var. The menu-method should still be changed to write to this /var location, so that a user can just remove the link and place a file there without having to disable anything in the menu-method script (though doing this could still be an advantage for the user). The problem is again the the proper upgrading. Upon updating from and older version, the scripts should check if there is a file and replace it with a symlink (ideally only if the menu-method file is unchanged otherwise either rename it and give a warning or keep the file there and give a warning). If you are an prospective developer and you want to work on this and you need/want some supervision/counseling/2nd pair of eyes to look at the patches before you want to submitt them, just send me a mail... If you stop LVDS with xrandr and pass --auto to the VGA output, does it choose 1280x1024? Yes and yes. If so, this behavior is just caused by the server trying to find a mode that works for both monitors, so that we are sure that the login window will appear on both centers. Oh. I think having to change resolution is definitely more annoying than having a login screen off-center. Is there a way to make it default to my preferred settings (which is the highest resolution for all displays, and the VGA monitor, if plugged in, to the right of the panel, not cloned)? Hi, do you have any pattern definitions in your color index config that make mutt look into the mails beyond the To/From/... headers (~h ~b patterns etc.)? These are inevitably expensive. So, to check this account I have produces a traffic of over 60 MByte !!! This is VERY GRAVE and definitively not in the sens of IMAP!!! The IMAP protocol is very clear and a IMAP client should only download the (configurable) INDEX and only download messages IF requested (view). Please forward this message urgently to upstream. Bug#498491: mldonkey-server: Server does not start
Package: mldonkey-server Version: 2.9.5-1.1 Followup-For: Bug #498491 To the reporter: No, these options are set for start-stop-daemon, not for mlnet. Have you checked that no other running daemon uses mldonkey's ports? For example, anon-proxy uses port 4001 by default and can prevent mlnet from starting. You can also remove '--background' from start-stop-daemon cmdline, do '/etc/init.d/mldonkey-server start' and then look into /var/log/mldonkey/mlnel.log for the reason. To the maintainer: The init script in its current state certainly requires your attention. 1. The line 'test -x $WRAPPER || exit 0' does nothing because WRAPPER is not defined and not used ('test -x' returns success, however). 2. Redirecting output of start-stop-daemon with '--background' option set is useless = the log file is useless. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Bug#495021: tex4ht: Could you incorporate late July bug fixes?
Hello, On Wed, 20 Aug 2008, Jason Riedy wrote: This bug (filed under wishlist) is just a request to package up the bug fixes. Then my later problems can be reported through this venue as well as (or instead of) comp.text.tex. I have created a Debian package 20080902-1 based on the release from that date. This will be uploaded to unstable but I will _not_ ask for an exception for it to be included in lenny (which is the frozen release) since there are a lot of changes over the last few months. If you can isolate some changes which are absolutely essential (release-critical is the Debian term) then I could try to backport those changes for the Debian lenny release. Alternatively, I can create a package for lenny-backports when that archive is created. The option of a user (or system administrator) making a local update as documented by Eitan on his web pages is also available for users. We finally agreed that you would do the update yourself at the end of the l10n update round. That time has come. To help you out, here's the patch which I would have used for an NMU.
