Bug#487748: Announce of the upcoming NMU for the chdrv package
Dear maintainer of chdrv and Debian translators, Some days ago, I sent a notice to the maintainer of the chdrv Debian package, mentioning the status of at least one old po-debconf translation update in the BTS. I announced the intent to build and possibly upload a non-maintainer upload for this package in order to fix this long-time pending localization bug as well as all other pending translations. The package maintainer agreed for the NMU or did not respond in two weeks, so I will proceed with the NMU. The full planned schedule is available at the end of this mail. The package is currently translated to: cs de es eu fi fr gl nl pt ru sv zh_CN zh_TW Among these, the following translations are incomplete: none If you did any of the, currently incomplete, translations you will get ANOTHER mail with the translation to update. Other translators also have the opportunity to create new translations for this package. Once completed, please send them as a bug report against the chdrv package so I can incorporate them in the build. The deadline for receiving updates and new translations is Friday, October 24, 2008. If you are not in time you can always send your translation to the BTS. The POT file is attached to this mail. If the maintainer objects to this process I will immediately abort my NMU and send him/her all updates I receive. Otherwise the following will happen (or already has): Monday, October 13, 2008 : send the first intent to NMU notice to the package maintainer. Bug#502586: gnome-settings-daemon: Should support using X DPI value rather than /desktop/gnome/font_rendering/dpi
Package: gnome-settings-daemon Version: 2.22.2.1-1 Severity: normal On almost all of my systems, X properly detects the size of the display and calculates the DPI. For the few systems where it doesn't, I've manually specified DisplaySize in /etc/X11/xorg.conf so that X knows the correct DPI. However, gnome-settings-daemon ignores this value, and instead uses the gconf key /desktop/gnome/font_rendering/dpi to determine the DPI of the display and size fonts appropriately. Thus, on all of my systems, *including* those which correctly autodetect the DPI, I have to manually fix the DPI in GNOME to get appropriately sized fonts. gnome-settings-daemon should support using the DPI value from X, rather than overriding it. Ideally it should do so by default so that it Just Works on many systems, but I'll settle for an unbreak my DPI setting if I have to. - Josh Triplett -- System Information: Debian Release: lenny/sid APT prefers unstable APT policy: (500, 'unstable'), (1, 'experimental') Architecture: amd64 (x86_64) Kernel: Linux 2.6.26-1-amd64 (SMP w/4 CPU cores) Locale: LANG=en_US.UTF-8, LC_CTYPE=en_US.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/bash Versions of packages gnome-settings-daemon depends on: ii gconf2 2.22.0-1 GNOME configuration database syste ii libart-2.0-2 2.3.20-2 Library of functions for 2D graphi ii libatk1.0-01.22.0-1 The ATK accessibility toolkit ii libaudiofile0 0.2.6-7 Open-source version of SGI's audio ii libbonobo2-0 2.22.0-1 Bonobo CORBA interfaces library ii libbonoboui2-0 2.22.0-1 The Bonobo UI library ii libc6 2.7-15GNU C Library: Shared libraries ii libcairo2 1.6.4-6.1 The Cairo 2D vector graphics libra ii libdbus-1-31.2.1-3 simple interprocess messaging syst ii libdbus-glib-1-2 0.76-1simple interprocess messaging syst ii libesd-alsa0 [libesd0] 0.2.36-3 Enlightened Sound Daemon (ALSA) - ii libfontconfig1 2.6.0-1 generic font configuration library ii libfreetype6 2.3.7-2 FreeType 2 font engine, shared lib ii libgconf2-42.22.0-1 GNOME configuration database syste ii libglade2-01:2.6.2-1 library to load .glade files at ru ii libglib2.0-0 2.16.6-1 The GLib library of C routines ii libgnome-desktop-2 2.22.3-2 Utility library for loading .deskt ii libgnome2-02.20.1.1-1The GNOME 2 library - runtime file ii libgnomecanvas2-0 2.20.1.1-1A powerful object-oriented display ii libgnomekbd2 2.22.0-1 GNOME library to manage keyboard c ii libgnomeui-0 2.20.1.1-2The GNOME 2 libraries (User Interf ii libgnomevfs2-0 1:2.22.0-5GNOME Virtual File System (runtime ii libgstreamer-plugins-b 0.10.20-1 GStreamer libraries from the base ii libgstreamer0.10-0 0.10.20-1 Core GStreamer libraries and eleme ii libgtk2.0-02.12.11-4 The GTK+ graphical user interface ii libice62:1.0.4-1 X11 Inter-Client Exchange library ii liborbit2 1:2.14.13-0.1 libraries for ORBit2 - a CORBA ORB ii libpango1.0-0 1.20.5-3 Layout and rendering of internatio ii libpixman-1-0 0.10.0-2 pixel-manipulation library for X a ii libpng12-0 1.2.27-2 PNG library - runtime ii libpopt0 1.14-4lib for parsing cmdline parameters ii libsm6 2:1.0.3-2 X11 Session Management library ii libstartup-notificatio 0.9-1 library for program launch feedbac ii libx11-6 2:1.1.5-2 X11 client-side library ii libxi6 2:1.1.3-1 X11 Input extension library ii libxklavier12 3.5-2 X Keyboard Extension high-level AP ii libxml22.6.32.dfsg-4 GNOME XML library ii libxrandr2 2:1.2.3-1 X11 RandR extension library ii libxrender11:0.9.4-2 X Rendering Extension client libra ii libxxf86misc1 1:1.0.1-3 X11 XFree86 miscellaneous extensio ii zlib1g 1:1.2.3.3.dfsg-12 compression library - runtime gnome-settings-daemon recommends no packages. gnome-settings-daemon suggests no packages. -- no debconf information -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#502285: first upgrade fails, xserver-xorg-video-ati is removed
On 2008-10-15 11:22 +0200, Martin Michlmayr wrote: Package: upgrade-reports Severity: important I upgraded my old laptop from etch to lenny. I followed the instructions from d-d-a, i.e. I first upgraded dpkg, apt and aptitude with aptitude and then did an aptitude dist-upgrade. The first dist-upgrade I did upgraded a bunch of packages, but I think there were also a lot of failures, so I did another dist-upgrade and that completed the upgrade. Except that xserver-xorg-video-ati got removed during the upgrade and X failed to start. So there are two issues: 1) the first dist-upgrade failing 2) xserver-xorg-video-ati being removed. It seems that aptitude suggests a suboptimal solution for the dist-upgrade and if you let it try different ones, the result is better. Here's my result from upgrading a small etch chroot with xserver-org-core and its recommendations installed. Aptitude and dpkg were already upgraded to the lenny version. , | # aptitude full-upgrade | Reading package lists... Done | Building dependency tree | Reading state information... Bug#502594: exaile: no daap support: daap plugin not showing up in plugin manager
Package: exaile Version: 0.2.11.1+debian-2 Severity: normal *** exaile Subject: exaile: no daap support: daap plugin not showing up in plugin manager Package: exaile Version: 0.2.11.1+debian-2 Severity: normal I understand why exile package in debian is different from other distribution: shipping with standard plugins and not allowing plugin download for security reasons. Anyway daap-plugin is included in /usr/lib/exaile/plugins but it's not showing up in plugin manager so I cannot enable it and browse my mt-daap served music library as I would with rhythmbox. I read somewhere on the web that I should install python-avahi and python-daap for this plugin to work so I installed these packages but daap-plugin doesn't show up as well. Are these packages needed for this plugin to work? If so shouldn't they be recommended at least? Since I'm and xfce user and I don't like to install all that gnome stuff rhythmbox depends on I'd really like daap integration to work in exaile. Thanks. Bug#502395: please allow Homepage field
On Fri, 17 Oct 2008, Peter Samuelson wrote: [Tomas Pospisek] The attached patch implements support for the Homepage field. Thanks. But is this actually useful in practice? Would you want a self-created package on your system that has a Homepage? And would the same argument also apply to the VCS- fields? The self-created package is a metapackage and contains only dependencies. It serves to make sure that all the HW support stuff and service support packages which we want to run on a certain server are actually there. The meta package itself lives in a Subversion and as such your question about the the VCS- field is to the point. The utility of the Homepage filed for that metapackage serves to point to the relevant Trac project, where we track requirements, documentation, bugs of the server, the source of the metapackage etc. As such, yes, both fields are useful to us, *t -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#502598: cryptsetup: passdev should be able to timeout when no device is found
Package: cryptsetup Version: 2:1.0.6-6 Severity: wishlist Today I discovered in README.initramfs.gz that there is a new keyscript, passdev. It seems to be a really nice idea, but I think it misses an important option, a timeout. Currently I have an unencrypted / and LUKS-crypted /home and swap, the keyfile for the later two is saved on an USB-stick. When I forget the USB-stick, I would like to still be able to boot the box and enter a passphrase by hand (luksOpen). This is not possible with passdev at the moment (I could ^C it, but that's not userfriendly). Could you implement a timout option? Bug#502600: ntpd exits immediately if ntpdate is installed but lockfile-progs isn't
Package: ntp Version: 1:4.2.4p4+dfsg-7 Severity: important The ntpdate package contains a script /etc/network/if-up.d/ntpdate which is executed whenever a network interface is brought up. During normal startup, before this script finishes, /etc/rc*.d/S23ntpd is called. ntpd is started, fails to bind to port 123 (because ntpdate is still running) and immediately exits. /etc/network/if-up.d/ntpdate and /etc/init.d/ntpd try to use a lock file to prevent this - but this works only if lockfile-progs is installed, which wasn't the case on my system. For example: _X-XfceSettingsName=Window Manager This may be more common that you would expect, as non-standard entries in .desktop files are required to start with 'X-'. For example, this affects the Xfce way of specifying 'short' names for entries in the settings manager, at least in the upcoming 4.6 release. I extracted the patch to fix this from the intltool subversion repo, and I've attached it to this mail. The patch may need some minor modification to work with 0.40.0 or even 0.40.3, as the line number may have changed (but patch(1) may be intelligent enough to get this). I guess this is too late for etch, though? Another option for unstable/next stable (after lenny) would be to upgrade to 0.40.4, which has this fix included. I believe this sort of fixes should go into lenny, if it needs to be a useful development platform. Actually reviewing if having 0.40.3+patch or 0.40.4 is possible would be even better, as there are other important bug fixes since 0.40.0. I'll see what other team members say before we push things one way or another. Bug#502609: gnome-power-manager: interfers with acpi-support scripts, should conflict with them
Package: gnome-power-manager Version: 2.22.1-3 Severity: critical Justification: breaks unrelated software Currenly, gnome-power-manager badly interfers with acpi-support which is installed by default by 'Laptop' task. What's the best way to proceed here to get these TearDown patches to make change on upgrade too before too many patches get applied in Debian that do not take care of it? Xv support is the only reason a lot of ati card users (including myself) are still using the proprietary driver. For this to work, the driver would have to be compiled with Direct Rendering (DRI) enabled. 1.2.3 also supports more (mostly newer) radeon cards than 1.2.1. for the aforementioned reasons i think packaging version 1.2.3 and pushing it to experimental would be a good idea and i would be more than happy to try it out and report back. thank you -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Hey Martin, I just noticed acpid applied a similar patch (#495544) which was a product of the TearDown work, and it also didn't handle the upgrade path (#502613, CC'd). What's the best way to proceed here to get these TearDown patches to make change on upgrade too before too many patches get applied in Debian that do not take care of it? I didn't get a reply from my last mail to Michael about how hal package plans to fix it, is the current best method to do a: if dpkg --compare-versions $installed lt-nl $version; then rm -f /etc/rc[06].d/K??$script fi ? This would work for insserv and sysv-rc, but not file-rc (but I don't care too much about file-rc, tbh. And the popcon stats of file-rc do not justify any special treatment of file-rc imho). It also doesn't take into account any local modifications to the stop priorities (when using sysv-rc alone). We are thus not 100% policy compliant, but I think we can ignore that in that special case. The major complain I got on debian-release (when we discussed the same topic for avahi-daemon) was, that the update-rc.d remove approach didn't preserve disabled services, which the above method would do (i.e. services which were disabled before the upgrade were enabled again afterwards). So in summary, I think the suggested method above would indeed be the best we can do atm. If I change the /desktop/gnome/background/primary_color key to be of expected length, the dialog works again (except that the default picked color is apparently wrong, but I haven't checked if it was intended). All in all, this looks like something else did set a b0rked primary_color. After some tries, it looks like gnome-appearance-properties is responsible for this. pkg-gnome people, is that intended, or is that a bug? Bug#502105: mutt 1.5.18-4: Bad IDN in from: prevents sending mail
Hi Christoph, On Fri, Oct 17, 2008 at 10:45 PM, Christoph Berg [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: tags 502105 moreinfo thanks Re: Ennio Sr 2008-10-13 [EMAIL PROTECTED] I've just upgraded my Debian distro from Etch to Lenny. When I pressed 'y' to send a message written with mutt (from console) I got the warning: Bad IDN in from: ...(username)..[at]tin.it which prevented me to send the message. I could however 'postpone' the message and quit mutt. Hi, could you send the uncloaked error message in full, as well as your $from and relevant my_hdr settings so we have a chance to debug this? As Frank already said, I suspect a badly encoded config file to be the culprit. Christoph -- [EMAIL PROTECTED] | http://www.df7cb.de/ The original error line was: Bad IDN in from: 'tin.it' Here follow details of my root and user locales, main Muttrc and user .muttrc. As I told Frank, I did try with different locales but got always the same result, so went back again to previous mutt version. [I'm writing this message from gmail as my [EMAIL PROTECTED] address seems to have been blacklisted at debian.org]. Thanks for your attention.
