Bug#509378: should use labels for all partitions in fstab
Quoting Colin Watson (cjwat...@debian.org): I absolutely think that we should be using UUIDs by default for devices where there isn't some other stable naming, as Ubuntu does. I agree. As I said earlier, we now just need to dinf someone who would commit self to do it. I suggest we add this to the release goals for squeeze. Indeed, we need something like a two-step release goals list: - the wished featureswhich nobody committed self to implement - the ones where a volunteer popped up to implement (those would of course have the entire support of the D-I team...or what remains of the D-I team) I even wonder if this static naming system couldn't be the main part of a GSOC project for 2009? signature.asc Description: Digital signature

But who is we and what is it in this sentence? Ok, more details: This is 8+ year old bug, with no interest of apt maintainers. And this is reasonable IMO, because system has to be in consistent state all the time. If something in upgrade went bad, apt should just die without a delay so problem is discovered and preferably addressed now, not after ten minutes or next day. Moreover, proposed variants of solution (see merged bugs) were marked by previous apt developers as bad and risky. If we is the apt maintainers and it is the bug then Yes who would be a more relevant group to address an apt problem to? I doubt you can find a more relevant group. Bug#481947: please consider this patch
Hi Steve, On 08/12/20 12:26 -0600, Steve M. Robbins said ... In May, when I first thought about this, I was worried about having a corrupt file on the server, as you suggest. But when it happened again this week, I thought that probably the FTP server will delete a file that wasn't completely transferred (so you don't really need to worry). I'm not sure which hypothesis is true. If you find out, please let me know. Partial FTP uploads are allowed by the FTP protocol and the FTP server will not delete them. 1. dput foo.changes ... fails partway through ... 2. submit dcut request 3. wait for acknowledgement by mail 4. dput foo.changes Waiting (step 3) is crucial, since the dcut requests are handled in batches by a cron job or similar. If you don't wait, what happens is that the newly-uploaded file (step 4) is cut and you'll get a message from DAK or whatever about a partially-uploaded package. I can tell you this from personal experience. :-( That is right. And it is important to re-instate the full file before the .changes is uploaded. SO: if we need to consider this case, then the message for an upload failure in step 1 needs to suggest *both* steps 2 and 3 before re-trying the dput. Certainly. I tried to clarify this a bit but struggled to not make the diplayed message excessively long. Does the following message that I just committed to git look OK? Leaving existing %s on the server and continuing NOTE: This existing file may have been previously uploaded partially. For official Debian upload queues, the dcut(1) utility can be used to remove this file, and after an acknowledgement mail is received in response to dcut, the upload can be re-initiated. Having both start and stop symlinks in the same runlevel is not supposed to be working, and I do not understand why leds_startup exist at all. It seem to talk about settings only present when executed from rcS.d/, while being installed in rc1.d/ .. rc5.d/. I hope these proposed headers can get you at least a bit on the way to solving this bug. The following is written with the disclaimer that I'm still figuring out how leds_startup and zleds are supposed to work. It seems that the leds_startup is required to initialize the LEDs on the NSLU2 to a desired state on the transition from S to the user run level. I'm not sure what purpose setting 'previous' to S serves in the script, but wouldn't it make sense that the reason the script is installed in rc1.d/ .. rc5.d/ is simply so that the script is run on the transition form S to any of the user run levels? I'm still testing out a new version of the leds_startup script. As I understand the zleds script, it is designed to indicate the state of the system as the system boots _and_ is shutdown. The NSLU2 is a headless device, and the LEDs are the only status indicators available to typical users. The zleds changes the state of the LEDs to indicate the boot and shutdown state (see /usr/share/doc/nslu2-utils/README.Debian in the nslu2-utils package [1]). Therefore, the script needs to have both start and stop symlinks in the same run level, so how do we support such a feature with insserv? It seems like we shouldn't need to have separate init scripts because what was done before was working. Please take into account that IANADD, hence I will need sponsorship for uploading new versions to the archive: I hope I can count on you for sponsoring my uploads. Also, bear in mind that I will need some help/clarifications from you, especially during my first steps. I hope you consider this as a sort of investment... In the meanwhile, I prepared a new apt-listbugs version (0.0.95) that fixes bug #476988 and adds me to the uploaders list. Contrary to the patch that I previously sent for bug #476988, this time I implemented the new feature as a new option (rather than as a new command): IMHO it resulted in a less invasive and more elegant modification. This new apt-listbugs version builds correctly in a sid chroot (managed with pbuilder!), was checked with lintian and passed an install-remove test. Now, if you are OK with taking a look at apt-listbugs/0.0.95, please tell me how you would like to get it: * would you like me to send the source package to you via e-mail? * would you like me to put the source package on some web site, so that you can download it? * would you prefer that I send you (via e-mail) a patch for your git repository? please give me detailed instructions for this task, since I am a git novice... Bug#508026: register_globals on is not supported
tags 508026 fixed-upstream thanks Hi, Thijs Kinkhorst ha scritto: As it seems, upstream does already support running in register_globals=0 mode for a long time (according to their changelog since 2002...). Therefore I guess this bug would be fixed if the statement turning register_globals on was removed from the Apache configuration file. Of course this does need some thorough testing. When doing that, including the fix from this bug report aswell is a good idea since it can't hurt and will provide some extra protection for those running unsafe setups. Upstream released a new version to fix this issue. In attachment the debdiff for stable/testing/unstable with the trivial backported patch[1], and register_globals off (not in stable). I also tested phppgadmin with register_globals off, and I didn't find any evidently problems. I'm not a DD, so these need a review and an upload. Bug#509566: Puppet: setting timeout to 0 causes puppet to try requesting a certificate infinitely often
Package: puppet Version: 0.24.5-2 Severity: normal puppetd accepts a timeout argument (-w), that instructs the daemon to wait for a specified amount of time before re-requesting a certificate from the puppet master. Hello, I have compiled aufs in the kernel 2.6.27 deactivating NFS support and applying the patches splice and sec_perm in the kernel, Now I am begging the tests, then, in a Debian Live system; aufs is charged correctly, although that after squashfs crashes when reserving memory for an inode with the function kmem. package amule-daemon severity 507242 important thanks Hi again Klaas, As told in my previous mail, I am hereby downgrading the severity of this bug [0] to 'important'. I had already tagged it as 'unreproducible' and you have not provided any new information about this bug in 20 days. If this bug is till valid for you, please: 1. Try the experimental version and report back (answer to Marcos) and/or 2. Try to find a simple way to the memory leak (answer to me) and/or 3. Try to find someone else with a similar memory leak. Note that downgrading the severity of the bug also prevents amule-daemon to be removed from lenny and doesn't mean that your bug is invalid. Best regards and have a happy end of year ! Bug#416208: Installation report HP-715/64 (HIL)
Moritz Muehlenhoff wrote: The boot-kernel (2.6.18) does not detect this keyboard on the HIL bus. It seems the needed .config values are not set when it was built. To solve this problem, the boot kernel needs the CONFIG_KEYBOARD_HIL_OLD=y option set. Additionally, all other HIL options should be disabled (see below). With those options, the HIL keyboard should work. HIL-Mouse will not be available, but it's not needed either for the installation process. In general, all newer HIL drivers do not work at all, so defaulting back to the old driver should be ok. The Lenny kernel sets CONFIG_KEYBOARD_HIL_OLD=m, does this still apply? Moritz, thanks for bringing this up again. I nearly forgot it! I just tried the netboot image dated 30-10-08 from http://ftp.nl.debian.org/debian/dists/testing/main/installer-hppa/current/images/netboot/2.6/. Currently the debian installer boots up nicely, but the keyboard is not functional at all (on machines with HIL keyboard). My tests with booting via serial console shows, that all what needs to be done to get those keyboards working now is, to run a modprobe hilkbd at startup. Is it possible that someone from the debian-installer teams add this modprobe hilkbd somewhere to the bootup process? This modprobe should also be carried over to the installed system afterwards. I'm willing to test any temporary images (preferably netboot images) as soon as possible. Helge -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-dist-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#509578: dpkg: should chdir(/) after chroot()
Package: dpkg Version: 1.14.23 Severity: normal Tags: patch User: ubuntu-de...@lists.ubuntu.com Usertags: origin-ubuntu ubuntu-patch jaunty When --instdir is used, dpkg calls chroot(instdir) but forgets to call chdir(/) afterwards, so the current working directory is left outside the chroot. This has been known to trigger kernel bugs (e.g. https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/251223). I'm filing this not because the bug above was actually dpkg's fault as such - it was clearly an Ubuntu kernel bug - but because it's clearly good practice to make sure the current working directory is inside the chroot. For example, without doing this, a malicious process could break out of the chroot using fchdir(). I'm not sure if people use dpkg in a context where this is an important security assumption, but this should be fixed in case they do. Bug#509472: debchange: unable to avoid --closes warning if bug in source package
On Mon, 22 Dec 2008 21:54:37 + Adam D. Barratt a...@adam-barratt.org.uk wrote: The central issue is the fact that the bug is (well, was) filed against the binary package soci which does not exist. In the past, the BTS attempted to guess what you meant in such cases, which wasn't always correct; there have therefore been some recent(ish) changes which mean that such bugs don't appear in a query for bugs assigned to the source package. The solution is to assign the bug to src:soci, which I've done for the bug you used as an example. That then breaks other things: Debian Bug report logs - #504907 FTBFS with GCC 4.4: missing #include Package: src:soci; Maintainer for src:soci is (unknown); and still doesn't populate the source field in bts status: $ bts status 504907 bug_num 504907 source unknown found_versions 2.2.0-4 date1226092516 found 2.2.0-4 = keywordspatch msgid 20081107211440.gt30...@deprecation.cyrius.com id 504907 severitynormal locationdb-h log_modified1230017765 originator Martin Michlmayr t...@cyrius.com subject FTBFS with GCC 4.4: missing #include pending pending package src:soci tagspatch Also, bug #509453 has now disappeared from the list of bugs affecting the source package soci, only 504907 now shows up. However, dch -a --closes 504907 does now work. (--closes 509453, naturally, does not.) A naive fix would be to make debchange look at binary package bugs in the absence of any filed against the source package. Doing so would open a can of worms, however; for example, the archive currently contains a source package named sm which produces an r-cran-sm binary package and a screen-message source package which produces an sm binary package. For that reason, I'm not sure there's much that debchange can / should do here. All it can do is hint in the error output that this might be a source package. Currently, that hint is a little obscure and confusing, especially when $bugpkg == $PACKAGE and $bugsrcpkg is undefined or '?': dch warning: bug #509453 belongs to package soci (src ?), not to soci: disabling closing changelog entry dch: Did you see that warning? Press RETURN to continue... That could be extended a bit to say: dch warning: bug #509453 belongs to package soci, which might be the source package. disabling closing changelog entry To reassign to soci source use: 'bts reassign 509453 src:soci' dch: Did you see that warning? Press RETURN to continue... Maybe only if $bugpkg == $PACKAGE ? [For reference, I believe that #509498, filed a short while ago against bugs.debian.org is another instance of the same underlying issue]. This does seem to be a bug in b.d.o and the same issue as 509498. I'm thinking we could change this bug report into a wishlist for src: to be documented in the bts manpage and maybe hinted in the error line from debchange and mark it blocked by 509498. To close 509498, I believe it would be necessary for 'bts status' to receive the relevant data to populate the source field *and* not list the package as src:soci in this case, just as soci. -- Neil Williams = http://www.data-freedom.org/ http://www.nosoftwarepatents.com/ http://www.linux.codehelp.co.uk/ pgp5ozDhNp2m9.pgp Description: PGP signature
Bug#503712: the gs-common problem
Hi everyone, you have been involved in #503712 so it's been a while since the last activity here. contrary to Niko's last mail I propose to live with a circular dependency and - make ghostscript depend on gs-common ( -3.2 to be uploaded) - make gs-common NOT depend on ghostscript-x unless there is a compelling reason not to (i.e. massive breakage would a reason, that gs-common then will have to stay installed for lenny is not, the circular dependency in itself isn't, but if it causes problems...). IMO a single excess package is not that bad compared to requiring attention during an upgrade. I will check whether this is a problem for the reverse build-dependencies and dependencies. For the latter, it would be cool if the maintainers of the affected packages, Vincent for latex-make Sylvain and David for page-crunch the Zope guys and Andreas and Fabio for zope-textindexng3 could weigh in here. I'll look at your packages, but if you already know whether it works without ghostscript-x or not, it'd be great if you could give me a shout. Happy holidays and kind regards T. Bug#509579: jack-audio-connection-kit: does not build netjack backend
Package: jack-audio-connection-kit Version: 0.116.1-1 Severity: important The debian package does not build the NetJack back end. This is likely due to packagers not reading their output during the configuration process, possibly not realizing that this feature has been added to jack by default. The autoconf does not select the netjack because the dependency on libsamplerate is not satisfied. Adding a libsampelrate-dev build dependency will enable the NetJack backend to be built, and a libsamplerate run-time dependency to allow it to run. IN addition, the libcelt and ibcelt-dev dependencies would allow netjack to build with celt codec support once debian version catches up with the requirement. -- System Information: Debian Release: 5.0 APT prefers unstable APT policy: (500, 'unstable'), (500, 'testing') Architecture: i386 (i686) Kernel: Linux 2.6.22.19-vs2.2.0.7vserver (SMP w/8 CPU cores) Locale: LANG=C, LC_CTYPE=C (charmap=ANSI_X3.4-1968) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/bash -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-dist-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. I don't think it is a good idea to hard-code downstream specific bits into the source... I tend to agree. There are also already packages in the archive like update-manager that use the string ubuntu in their version. Note that Ubuntu's sync process uses the presence of ubuntu in the version number to inhibit automatic syncing, so the version check is not quite so arbitrary as it looks. Debian packages containing ubuntu in their version number will never be automatically synced into Ubuntu, and will require manual attention. Fortunately, this problem is very rare. How about creating a framework for hooking code into the build process. Perhaps running/sourcing scripts out of a dir, trigerred by a setting in the environment---anyone could use it (mitigates any `why should Ubuntu get special treatment' arguments), everyone using it can work at their own pace (never be out-of-sync or behind), couldn't lead to source bloat disease. In this specific case, adding a check to Ubuntu's version of lintian might be way easier... We found, FWIW, that having dpkg-source refuse to build the erroneous packages was a *much* quicker way to get everyone to make this source change to their packages than a lintian change, and we didn't regard it as a problem to enforce the change like this. If we had taken the latter approach, I suspect we would still be failing to comply with Debian's request of us today, which wouldn't do either project any good. I've attached an updated version of the patch Ian sent, adjusted for the changes in dpkg-source in the intervening time and with a stricter check on DEBEMAIL before promoting this from a warning to an error. Bug#509472: debchange: unable to avoid --closes warning if bug in source package

Barratt a...@adam-barratt.org.uk wrote: The solution is to assign the bug to src:soci, which I've done for the bug you used as an example. That then breaks other things: Debian Bug report logs - #504907 FTBFS with GCC 4.4: missing #include Package: src:soci; Maintainer for src:soci is (unknown); Indeed. I mentioned that in my previous mail - support for src:foo is only partially in place on the BTS at the moment. It mostly works, but individual bug report pages are one of the places where it sadly doesn't. :-( and still doesn't populate the source field in bts status: That's due to the fact that the BTS's SOAP interface (which bts status queries) doesn't return source package information by default. I've modified bts locally to request the information. In this case, however, the result is that there is no source entry at all. I'm not sure whether that's intentional or not. Also, bug #509453 has now disappeared from the list of bugs affecting the source package soci, only 504907 now shows up. Indeed; #509453 would need reassigning to src:soci as well. [...] That could be extended a bit to say: dch warning: bug #509453 belongs to package soci, which might be the source package. disabling closing changelog entry To reassign to soci source use: 'bts reassign 509453 src:soci' dch: Did you see that warning? Press RETURN to continue... Maybe only if $bugpkg == $PACKAGE ? Yeah, that seems like a reasonable idea. If you're happy with that, then so am I. :) To close 509498, I believe it would be necessary for 'bts status' to receive the relevant data to populate the source field *and* not list the package as src:soci in this case, just as soci. bts status literally displays the data returned to it by the BTS, which is why the output sometimes appears a little odd. I'd prefer not to change that as it has the potential to create confusion when compared to other representations of the data (although obviously I'm open to being convinced I'm wrong, and my co-maintainers may disagree). I'll query whether the BTS is likely to start returning a useful source field for such bugs, but I probably won't have chance to follow that up until after Christmas; let's see where that leads. Bug#509522: gettext: Adding ~5.5MB worth of deps for --color option seems excessive
On Tue, 23 Dec 2008, Frans Pop wrote: Package: gettext Version: 0.17-6 Severity: minor Hello Santiago, While upgrading my little ARM box I noticed that gettext suddenly pulled in libglib and libcroco. I've checked the changelog and I do understand your reasons for making that change (although I don't quite see how CSS manipulation fits in with a --color option). Result on this particular system was that size of gettext was reduced by 160KB, but that aptitude suggested I install ~5.5MB worth of extra libs. I managed to reduce that to ~2MB by not installing libglib2.0-data, but still. gettext for me is a fairly basic command-line package and it has *44* reverse dependencies (including very basic development tools and e.g. kernel-package). Having its dependecies increased by so much for something as trivial as a --color option (which I've personally never used, even if I do use the gettext utils quite a lot) seems like bloat. As I say, I understand the reasons and also see this is really an upstream issue, but I cannot help wondering if any alternatives are possible. The dependency on libglib2.0-0 was first added by accident, as I built 0.17-5 on a system having the corresponding development package installed. However, after reading the docs I realized this library was already part of gettext, in embedded form (something which is generally considered an evil thing from the security point of view), so I decided to use libraries for all the other embedded libraries in 0.17-6. I don't think 2MB is too much by today standards. The user package is gettext-base, which does not have this dependency. gettext is the development package, which is already 8MB large. The only way to remove this dependency would be to add build-conflicts for all the external libraries, but then it would be a matter of time that someone submits a bug against gettext for using embedded libraries, as the latest policy strongly discourages it. To summarize, I think gettext in its current form is the least of two evils. May I close this bug? -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-dist-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#503757: vim-runtime: 7.2.049-2 is still failing
Package: vim-runtime Version: 1:7.2.049-2 Followup-For: Bug #503757 Hi, I'm still seeing this problem when upgrading to 7.2.049-2, from 1:7.1.314-3 (I'll call these new and old respectively further on). I'm not so sure how these diversions really work, though I'll try to provide some more info. The exact error I'm seeing is: Preparing to replace vim-runtime 1:7.1.314-3 (using .../vim-runtime_2%3a7.2.049-2_all.deb) ... It seems that diversions are in place for both vim71 and vim72: matth...@xanthe:~$ sudo dpkg-divert --list *vim* diversion of /usr/share/vim/vim71/doc/help.txt to /usr/share/vim/vim71/doc/help.txt.vim-tiny by vim-runtime diversion of /usr/share/vim/vim71/doc/tags to /usr/share/vim/vim71/doc/tags.vim-tiny by vim-runtime diversion of /usr/share/vim/vim72/doc/help.txt to /usr/share/vim/vim72/doc/help.txt.vim-tiny by vim-runtime diversion of /usr/share/vim/vim72/doc/tags to /usr/share/vim/vim72/doc/tags.vim-tiny by vim-runtime I suspect that the vim72 diversions are added by the previous failed upgrade attempt, from looking at the new preinst script. I also suspect that the two Leaving diversion... messages in the output above are the attempts to add those diversions again, so it seems these don't pose any problem. The new preinst script also tries to remove any old diversions that are still in place, and this is where things are failing. Manually executing the remove command confirms that this is indeed the problem: matth...@xanthe:~$ sudo dpkg-divert --package vim-runtime --rename --remove /usr/share/vim/vim71/doc/help.txt Removing `diversion of /usr/share/vim/vim71/doc/help.txt to /usr/share/vim/vim71/doc/help.txt.vim-tiny by vim-runtime' dpkg-divert: rename involves overwriting `/usr/share/vim/vim71/doc/help.txt' with different file `/usr/share/vim/vim71/doc/help.txt.vim-tiny', not allowed This does make sense, since the old vim-runtime is still installed (so /usr/share/vim/vim71/doc/help.txt is present), while there is also still a /usr/share/vim/vim71/doc/help.txt.vim-tiny. AFAICS, the latter should have been removed when vim-tiny was upgraded (I assume that diversions work for removal of files as well as for installs?). I'm not so sure why that didn't happen, though I'm not so sure if removing that file is the proper way to handle this. AFAICU, the diversion should not be removed until after the file is removed by vim-runtime (ie, in the postinst upgrade and postrm scripts, I think?). This would also allow vim-runtime to be upgraded when vim-tiny is still installed, and properly restore /usr/share/vim/vim71/doc/help.txt to the vim-tiny version. I did a quick implementation of this scheme (removing the old diversions in postinst configure, see attachment), which solved my upgrading problems. This still leaves the vim-tiny versions of help.txt and tags littering /usr/share/vim/vim71/, but that makes sense, since the cause of the problem seems to be that the vim-tiny files didn't get removed properly. In other words, removing the diversions later makes the vim-runtime package a lot more robust. Removing any .vim-tiny versions that make dpkg-divert --remove fail doesn't seem to be the right approach here. Note that I don't remove the check_diversion function from preinst in my patch (I don't fully know what it does or why it exists either), but following the above reasoning I think it might be a bad approach as well. I haven't tried reproducing this on a clean environment yet (due to lack of time), but I'm happy to provide more information if needed. Gr. Bug#509178: booting Debian installer kernel on SunBlade from CDROM is not really supported (was: Re: Bug#509178: installation-reports: sparc fails to boot 2.6.26: Memory Address not Aligned)
Hi, Op Sat 20 Dec 2008 om 10:43:17 +0100 schreef Joost van Baal: This might be the same bug as #509202. Bug#509472: debchange: unable to avoid --closes warning if bug in source package
On Tue, 23 Dec 2008 13:09:21 - Adam D. Barratt a...@adam-barratt.org.uk wrote: Also, bug #509453 has now disappeared from the list of bugs affecting the source package soci, only 504907 now shows up. Indeed; #509453 would need reassigning to src:soci as well. Done - remarked it found too. If you're happy with that, then so am I. :) OK, that's done (albeit with a minor problem where the b.d.o bug got retitled instead of this one because I used one too many it's in the bts command). I didn't realise that bts updated the value of 'it' according to the immediate previous bug number rather than sticking with the first: $ bts severity 509472 wishlist , block it by 509498 , retitle it [debchange] clarify error message when using --closes with source packages ends up retitling 509498, not 509472. A bit counter-intuitive that. To close 509498, I believe it would be necessary for 'bts status' to receive the relevant data to populate the source field *and* not list the package as src:soci in this case, just as soci. bts status literally displays the data returned to it by the BTS, which is why the output sometimes appears a little odd. Bug#508026: register_globals on is not supported
Hi, * Giuseppe Iuculano giuse...@iuculano.it [2008-12-23 14:50]: Thijs Kinkhorst ha scritto: As it seems, upstream does already support running in register_globals=0 mode for a long time (according to their changelog since 2002...). I take care of sponsoring the upload for unstable. For stable security the version looks wrong to me, please use 4.0.1-3.1etch1.
