Bug#518938: Does not convert from HTML to Word
Package: unoconv Version: 0.3-3 It can convert HTML to PDF, but HTML to Word or RTF fails. unoconv -v -d document -f doc DRAFT.html In the resulting DRAFT.doc the images are not visible. In using openoffice.org by hand you can not just open the HTML and then save as MS Word. This may be a clue. To convert HTML to Word by hand you need to: - File/New/Text Document; Insert/File the HTML; and then File/Save As/Microsoft Word ... -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-dist-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Manually removing the dependency from the Packages file makes the error go away and the package install successfully (i.e. dpkg can resolve the dependency, hence the heightened priority). Bug#518944: mediawiki: violation of FHS with regard to extensions location
Package: mediawiki Version: 1:1.14.0-1 Severity: normal The Debian MediaWiki package sets up extensions to be installed in /var/lib. According to the FHS, /var/lib holds Variable state information: This hierarchy holds state information pertaining to an application or the system. State information is data that programs modify while they run, and that pertains to one specific host. Users must never need to modify files in /var/lib to configure a package's operation. State information is generally used to preserve the condition of an application (or a group of inter-related applications) between invocations and between different instances of the same application. State information should generally remain valid after a reboot, should not be logging output, and should not be spooled data. A more fitting location would be /usr/lib, as it is used for libraries of programming and packages. Seeing that the extensions are more like libraries for the MediaWiki package, and that they are most likely installed by the local administrator and not the package management system (with the exception of the mediawiki-extensions package, which installs to /etc/mediawiki-extensions anyway), a more FHS compliant location would be /usr/local/lib. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-dist-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#518869: ITP: shorewall6 -- Shoreline Firewall (IPv6 version), netfilter configurator

Even though I'm not following the upstream evolution I'm a user of the shorewall package, which has IPv6 support even though disabled by default. Why we now need a separate package now? Upstream releases now the following packages for 4.2.x: shorewall-common shorewall-docs shorewall-lite shorewall-perl shorewall-shell shorewall6 shorewall6-lite shorewall6 depends upon shorewall-perl (and consequently shorewall-common) in order to work properly. It is a different rules engine/compiler that handles IPv6 packet filtering. It was implemented separately because it is in many ways much simpler than IPv4 packet filter (e.g., there is no NAT in IPv6 and IPsec is part of the spec instead of requiring encapsulation). Bug#518945: Leaks sockets under Python 2.5
Package: python-mechanize Version: 0.1.7b-3 python-mechanize 0.1.7 is a total pain to use under Python 2.5 as it doesn't clean up after itself without a lot of convincing, leading to out of file descriptor errors in long-running processes, etc. My testcase is: import os, subprocess from mechanize import Browser subprocess.call(['/bin/ls', '-l', '/proc/%d/fd' % os.getpid()]) br = Browser() br.open('http://google.co.uk/') br.close() subprocess.call(['/bin/ls', '-l', '/proc/%d/fd' % os.getpid()]) which prints: total 0 lrwx-- 1 lamby lamby 64 2009-03-09 12:09 0 - /dev/pts/9 lrwx-- 1 lamby lamby 64 2009-03-09 12:09 1 - /dev/pts/9 lrwx-- 1 lamby lamby 64 2009-03-09 12:09 2 - /dev/pts/9 lr-x-- 1 lamby lamby 64 2009-03-09 12:09 3 - /proc/12035/fd total 0 lrwx-- 1 lamby lamby 64 2009-03-09 12:09 0 - /dev/pts/9 lrwx-- 1 lamby lamby 64 2009-03-09 12:09 1 - /dev/pts/9 lrwx-- 1 lamby lamby 64 2009-03-09 12:09 2 - /dev/pts/9 lrwx-- 1 lamby lamby 64 2009-03-09 12:09 3 - socket:[44930] -- lrwx-- 1 lamby lamby 64 2009-03-09 12:09 4 - socket:[44942] -- lr-x-- 1 lamby lamby 64 2009-03-09 12:09 5 - pipe:[44943] Doing a bit of manual GC helps: import os, gc, subprocess from mechanize import Browser subprocess.call(['/bin/ls', '-l', '/proc/%d/fd' % os.getpid()]) br = Browser() br.open('http://google.co.uk/') br.close() del br gc.collect() subprocess.call(['/bin/ls', '-l', '/proc/%d/fd' % os.getpid()]) total 0 lrwx-- 1 lamby lamby 64 2009-03-09 12:12 0 - /dev/pts/9 lrwx-- 1 lamby lamby 64 2009-03-09 12:12 1 - /dev/pts/9 lrwx-- 1 lamby lamby 64 2009-03-09 12:12 2 - /dev/pts/9 lr-x-- 1 lamby lamby 64 2009-03-09 12:12 3 - /proc/12086/fd total 0 lrwx-- 1 lamby lamby 64 2009-03-09 12:12 0 - /dev/pts/9 lrwx-- 1 lamby lamby 64 2009-03-09 12:12 1 - /dev/pts/9 lrwx-- 1 lamby lamby 64 2009-03-09 12:12 2 - /dev/pts/9 lr-x-- 1 lamby lamby 64 2009-03-09 12:12 3 - pipe:[45407] .. but this is, of course, extremely backwards. Bug#354825: Openntpd init script returns an error on shutdown
There are two processes associated with openntpd: r...@prana:~$ ps auxw | grep ntpd root 4216 0.0 0.0 3560 820 ?Ss 13:25 0:00 /usr/sbin/ntpd ntpd 4217 0.0 0.1 4804 1304 ?S13:25 0:00 /usr/sbin/ntpd The one started as 'root' forks the other one (running as 'ntpd'). If we could ask start-stop-daemon to send the TERM signal only to the process running as 'root', then the parent would orderly terminate its child process (running as 'ntpd') and there would be no error messages. As it turns out, start-stop-daemon has a --user option which can be used to select only those processes which are running as a given user. Therefore, I added `--user root' to the start-stop-daemon --stop calls of the init script, and the problem disappeared. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-dist-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#518944: [Pkg-mediawiki-devel] Bug#518944: mediawiki: violation of FHS with regard to extensions location
Hi ! Le Monday 09 March 2009 12:59:12 Alon Swartz, vous avez écrit : The Debian MediaWiki package sets up extensions to be installed in /var/lib. According to the FHS, /var/lib holds Variable state information: (...) A more fitting location would be /usr/lib, as it is used for libraries of programming and packages. I think you misundertood the FHS specifications. Firstly, /usr/lib shouldn't be modified by the administrator, but ony by packages. Locally modified files go to /usr/local/lib and the like. Secondly, /usr/lib is meant for binary data, whereas extensions, being php text data, are architecture-independant, and, as such, should go to /usr/share, or /usr/local/share for custom extensions. That is in particular the case for the extensions installed by the mediawiki-extensions package: mediawiki-extensions: /usr/share/mediawiki-extensions/RenameUserJob.php mediawiki-extensions: /usr/share/mediawiki-extensions/SpecialLastUserLogin.php mediawiki-extensions: /usr/share/mediawiki-extensions/SpecialRenameuser.i18n.php mediawiki-extensions: /usr/share/mediawiki-extensions/SpecialRenameuser.php mediawiki-extensions: /usr/share/mediawiki-extensions/SpecialRenameuser_body.php mediawiki-extensions: /usr/share/mediawiki-extensions/SprintfDateCompat.php mediawiki-extensions: /usr/share/mediawiki-extensions/SyntaxHighlight_GeSHi.class.php mediawiki-extensions: /usr/share/mediawiki-extensions/SyntaxHighlight_GeSHi.i18n.php mediawiki-extensions: /usr/share/mediawiki-extensions/SyntaxHighlight_GeSHi.php mediawiki-extensions: /usr/share/mediawiki-extensions/captcha.py mediawiki-extensions: /usr/share/mediawiki-extensions/inputbox.php mediawiki-extensions: /usr/share/mediawiki-extensions/maintenance/SpamBlacklist.php (etc..) Eventually, the mediawiki package does not enforce any specific location for the extensions, since they are loaded from the configuration file. And this configuration file belongs in /etc/mediawiki/, which corresponds to the requirement: Users must never need to modify files in /var/lib to configure a package's operation. Can I close the bug, or, perhaps there is something I did not understand from your original issue ? In some cases (as with the libpaper patch), the program will plunge on unaware, eventually producing an error due to the missing filename. In others cases, xmlto will exit immediately without explaining why. So I would prefer something like the attached patch. It also has the advantage of making it harder to regress to this bug's behavior again. Tested by rebuilding git-core. Bug#512433: R-cran-vcd for Debian was REJECTED because of missing source documentation
Hello, at first I would like to inform you that I plan to package R CRAN Vcd for the Debian GNU Linux distribution. The final target is the R CRAN Surveillance package which is a nice enhancement for the epidemiology task of Debian Med [1]. I actually prepared a package which worked so far but there is one issue which is not accepted by ftpmaster: We have to provide the source for all binary chunks of data - and PDF documents belong into this category. As you can see below the source for hcl-colors.pdf is lacking from the source tarball which I downloaded [2]. Some searching revealed a document at R-forge which seems to be the source of this document. I would like to ask you what strategy you would consider reasonable to proceed now: 1. Remove hcl-colors.pdf completely from vcd tarball because it becomes outdated compared to the version in Colorspace. I could link inside the Debian package to the document inside Colorspace because it depends from it anyway so no information is lost. In this case I wonder whether you want to remove the PDF from upstream tarball yourself. 2. Add the source (in the old revision) to the Vcs tarball because it is perfectly applicable for this package for Vcs. Once we are talking about sources I would like to ask explicitely for the license: I downloaded the package as GPLv2. Does this license also apply to the documentation files? Kind regards and thanks for providing R Vcd Andreas. Bug#517255: fetchmail and krb/gssapi

Ah, I see. libkrb5-3 states it Replaces: libkrb53, but it doesn't provide libgssapi_krb5 anymore, which has been outsourced to libgssapi-krb5-2. So either libkrb5-3 or fetchmail will have to adjust its dependencies. If the oursourcing was done to reduce size/dependencies on the libs side, I guess it will be fetchmail...? First, this is all in experimental, not unstable:-) I'm allowed to break things in experimental. No one said something contrary to this :) If I had uploaded that package to unstable, I would expect fetchmail to continue to work for anyone who already had it installed. If you only install libkrb5-3 then you'll still have the libgssapi_krb5 from libkrb53. However if you install libgssapi-krb5-3, then you'd again have libgssapi_krb5. However, that set of packages will never make their way to unstable. Instead, I'm going to be adding a libkrb53 that depends on the other libs. So, since you have an install dependency on libkrb53, then you'll pull in libgssapi-krb5-3 because libkrb53 will pull that in. libkrb5-dev will also pull in libgssapi-krb5-3. After you next rebuild fetchmail, you'll end up with a dependency on libgssapi-krb5-3 not on libkrb53. Sorry I think I am not understanding your point. So in short, what's wrong with depending on libkrb5-dev? Nico Sam or Anibal, any idea about that? I wasn't notified Nico because of any change, currently fetchmail has a Nico build-dependency for libkrb5-dev and libgssglue-dev. Why do you want libgssglue? Do you support gss-api mechanisms other than kerberos? Using libgssglue may make some other transitions more difficult in the future, although that is very much a workstill being thought about. The dependency on gssglue was introduced because of #433423 so no. What is the alternative? Sorry I am kinda not looking through this dependency hell anymore. Bug#518944: [Pkg-mediawiki-devel] Bug#518944: mediawiki: violation of FHS with regard to extensions location
Thanks for the quick reply! Romain Beauxis wrote: Le Monday 09 March 2009 12:59:12 Alon Swartz, vous avez écrit : The Debian MediaWiki package sets up extensions to be installed in /var/lib. According to the FHS, /var/lib holds Variable state information: (...) A more fitting location would be /usr/lib, as it is used for libraries of programming and packages. I think you misundertood the FHS specifications. Firstly, /usr/lib shouldn't be modified by the administrator, but ony by packages. Locally modified files go to /usr/local/lib and the like. I agree, I never meant to imply otherwise. Secondly, /usr/lib is meant for binary data, whereas extensions, being php text data, are architecture-independant, and, as such, should go to /usr/share, or /usr/local/share for custom extensions. Thanks for clearing up the binary data bit, I missed that... /usr/share and /usr/local/share is a better fit, which is why I don't understand why the package symlinks /usr/share/mediawiki/extensions to /var/lib/mediawiki/extensions From what I understand, /var/lib is meant to hold state information pertaining to the application. State information is data that programs modify while they run. Are extensions considered state information? Eventually, the mediawiki package does not enforce any specific location for the extensions, since they are loaded from the configuration file. And this configuration file belongs in /etc/mediawiki/, which corresponds to the requirement: Users must never need to modify files in /var/lib to configure a package's operation. In the current configuration, if an administrator would like to install an extension, he would install it into /var/lib/mediawiki/extensions, unless he manually changes the configuration. Bug#518737: dpkg: install-info should still exit zero if info document is not found
Hi all, sorry to chime in only now, I was away mountaineering. On So, 08 Mär 2009, Raphael Hertzog wrote: We already wanted that for lenny but nobody found the time to drive this change… so no I don't know the timescale. Right, that is the fundamental problem. I carry around a transisiton plan we worked on some time ago, attached. I once (quite some time ago) checked all the install-info invocations by grepping for install-info in all the postinst/postrms and AFAIS there are not too many packages using things that are not supported by current texinfo. Finally I have to say that I am currently not able to do much work on that, since I am too much taken by packaging TeX Live 2008 (long overdue) after the complete rewrite of TL2008 stuff. I could suggest to package a current texinfo as is without changing anything else, but that would give us at least a test bed to try all invocations with curretn ginstall-info. The format of these files is described by the GNU texinfo package, and the support for new features is added to the GNU's install-info (ginstall-info on Debian), and not in dpkg's install-info (e.g. support for documents with more than one section: #139569). * /usr/share/info/dir integrates information from different packages. A package can break what has been registered by another one, without any possibility to fix it (itself). Thus it would be better to be prepared for regenerating a dir file from scratch at any time. Transition proposal === + Changes in dpkg - replace dpkg's install-info by a script which just issues a warning, or exit silently. This script could be removed for Lenny+1 or 2. install-info should no more be essential, it is only needed when the info viewer is installed to search the info pages. + Changes in texinfo - a new install-info package replaces dpkg's install-info - This install-info should support the current dpkg's install-info options (i.e. no failures, but not necessarily registering the info file) IMO, this install-info should be compatible with the GNU's install info, and when it detects that it is used by a old Debian package, it should do nothing (or just warn and recommend using update-info-dir, see below). * this should provide a compatibility with packages not installed from a Debian package (make make install) * and should not block the installation of old packages * full compatibility with current dpkg's install-info would be nice, but is not required - Add an update-info-dir script. This script should just delete the dir file and then call the GNU's install-info with all the info files. (see also the previous mails from Ian Zimmerman, and his patch for --generate in install-info) - When installed for the first time (or first time = version xxx), it should call update-info-dir. * There may be an issue with local softwares (not Debian packages) = maybe add a debconf question / NEWS entry? * What options should be used when installing the old info files? - Add support for multiple dir files in the info viewer. This would permit update-info-dir to use the --dir-file /usr/share/info/debian-dir option. /usr/share/info/dir (and /usr/local/share/info/dir) could be used for non Debian's info files. - Fix some regressions from dpkg's install-info. (IIRC an alignment regression was mentioned with GNU's texinfo) + Changes in packages installing info files - Note: According to an i386 Contents file, there are 2220 info files, in 403 packages - These packages should just drop their info files in /usr/share/info, and call the update-info-dir script if

No, that is incorrect. It is true that yaird silently ignore some of the newer initramfs-tools extensions to the mkinitrd interface, but not the -t option which is now expected by linux-2.6 (see bug#518315). mkinitrd provided a limited set of commands needed by kernels to automate generating ramdisks. This interface is what both initramfs-tools and yaird implemented and still used by kernel-package. Bug#515647: r-cran-surveillance_0.9.9-1_i386.changes REJECTED (fwd)
Hello, at first I would like to inform you that I plan to package R CRAN Surveillance for the Debian GNU Linux distribution. It is a really nice enhancement for the epidemiology task of Debian Med [1]. I actually prepared a package which worked so far but there is one issue which is not accepted by ftpmaster: We have to provide the source for all binary chunks of data - and PDF documents belong into this category. As you can see below the source for flowchart.pdf and vignette.pdf are lacking from the source tarball which I downloaded [2]. I had a look into your SVN and happily found surveillance/pkg/inst/doc/SurveillanceFlowchart.sxd which is probably the source of flowchart.pdf and surveillance/pkg/inst/doc/vignette.{Rnw,tex} which seems to be the source of vignette.pdf (please excuse my ignorance but I can not really know what Rnw files are - looks like latex source and both files look very similar - probably one is auto generated from the other). So I would like to suggest you might bundle a new tarball which includes the sources for the pdf files (and perhaps stripping the aux, bbl, blg, log and out files would make sense). This would enable me to build a Debian package without any changes to the source and it will probably help other users as well. Kind regards and thanks for providing R Surveillance (BTW, once I packaged all Epidemiology related R packages I'll issue a more general announcement) Andreas. Please convert it. quilt refresh can do this for you. Bonjour Raphaël, Since the discussion started. I take the opportunity of asking a question with one of my packages as example. I ask it on -devel because I wonder if it is a cornercase or if it would concern more persons. The software suite EMBOSS is released once per year, and any other upstream change is done through an official monolithic patch. The Debian emboss source package applies this upstream patch using quilt, but conversion to source format 3.0 (quilt) does not work because the patch is not in the 'unified' format. http://svn.debian.org/wsvn/debian-med/trunk/packages/emboss/trunk/debian/patches/upstream.patch?op=filerev=0sc=0 Since despite it is not unified, this the patch is very well accepted by quilt, do you think it would be possible to make format 3.0 (quilt) accept this format as well ? This interface is what both initramfs-tools and yaird implemented and still used by kernel-package. I believe that option caused problems in the past for initramfs-tools to have that option enabled by default, leading to the change in 0.53 (or really 0.53c). Why do recent linux-2.6 need to introduce the use of the -t option? read man update-initramfs -t section. we want to be sure to really ship the latest modules, it has to be reentrant. kind regards -- maks -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-dist-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#518919: menu: lost menu entries for upgraded packages

Then it is a bug in debhelper. It should still call update-menus in the postinst, (or triggers it using dpkg-trigger). The problem is that menu only display menu entries for configured packages, because unconfigured or half-configured packages generally do not work. Without an explicit trigger in the postinst, dpkg run the trigger before the package is configured and then update-menus ignores it. This is related to bug #473461 which cause update-menus to be run twice in some case which is a regression from Etch. Fixing bug 473461 might alleviate this problem when using apt. Bug#515641: r-cran-epi_1.0.10-1_i386.changes REJECTED (fwd)
Hello, at first I would like to inform you that I plan to package R CRAN Epi for the Debian GNU Linux distribution. It is a really nice enhancement for the epidemiology task of Debian Med [1]. I actually prepared a package which worked so far but there is one issue which is not accepted by ftpmaster: We have to provide the source for all binary chunks of data - and PDF documents belong into this category. As you can see below the source for R-intro.pdf and Follow-up.pdf are lacking from the source tarball which I downloaded [2]. Unfortunately I was not able to detect any source for these two documents and I have no idea how to follow the request of our ftpmaster team except to remove these nice docs which would be a shame. Is there any way you could provide the source of the documents (preferably inside an upgraded version of the downloadable tarball). Please make sure that the license of the documents will be clarified in case it might be different from GPLv2 which is valid for the sources. Kind regards and thanks for providing R Epi Andreas. Bug#512433: R-cran-vcd for Debian was REJECTED because of missing source documentation
Hi Andreas, the hcl-colors.pdf-file was included in the tar-ball only accidentally---it really should only live in the colorspace package. I just put online (at the cran-master) version 1.2-3 excluding it. Thanks for pointing this out! David Andreas Tille wrote: Hello, at first I would like to inform you that I plan to package R CRAN Vcd for the Debian GNU Linux distribution. Bug#518951: bleachbit: Please improve French translation
Hi Luca, Le lundi 09 mars 2009 à 14:59 +0100, Luca Falavigna a écrit : Julien, thank you for your work! Translations are managed with Rosetta, a component of Canonical's Launchpad portal. In particular, french translations can be adjusted at https://launchpad.net/bleachbit/trunk/+pots/bleachbit/fr/+translate. I'm CCing Edouard Marquez, who took care of the major part of the translation. Edouard, could you please have a look at the files attached at http://bugs.debian.org/518951 and eventually adjust BleachBit translations in Rosetta? Thank you for your work! I have adjusted the translations in Rosetta (maybe more than in the patch I had already submitted). Edouard, please review the translation I have changed so that Luca might already extract it and integrate in an updated Debian package revision. Bug#354434: icewm: More info on this bug
Package: icewm Version: 1.2.35-1 Followup-For: Bug #354434 It's two bugs, actually. 1. 1-bit XWMHints icons are rendered improperly (xcalc, xclock). instead of being black and white, they are black and amost black (RGBA value of white is 0,0,1,255). Bug#512433: R-cran-vcd for Debian was REJECTED because of missing source documentation
Hi again, Upstream responded *very* fast by an upgraded tarball - just building the new package ... Many thanks Andreas. On Mon, 9 Mar 2009, Andreas Tille wrote: Hello, at first I would like to inform you that I plan to package R CRAN Vcd for the Debian GNU Linux distribution. -- http://fam-tille.de -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-dist-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#518961: linux-kbuild-2.6.26: Typo in modpost wrapper src/mod/modpost.c
Package: linux-kbuild-2.6.26 Version: 2.6.26-3 Severity: serious Justification: no longer builds from source This typo actually causes other kernel modules which use KBUILD_EXTRA_SYMBOLS to not build correctly. The modpost process will exit with the error: Error: not ELF. The KBUILD_EXTRA_SYMBOLS feature adds the argument -e .../Module.symvers to the modpost argument list. The e option requires an argument in the standard Linux kernel modpost program, but Debian's mk_elfconfig-ish modpost wrapper does not expect the e option to have an argument, thus this error is detected. To fix this bug, all that needs to be done is to add a : after the e in the optstring argument of the modpost wrapper's getopt call. Yes, I know it looks like I'm running a Fedora kernel on a Debian box, but I'm actually just running a debootstrapped Debian on a Fedora box. Nevertheless, I've confirmed this bug on a full-blown Debian box as well. Time? What has time to do with it? Please provide reason! ubuntu doesn't use -t as they have takeover set in initramfs-tools by default, thus probably it went unnoticed there. So why don't you drop that option instead, if it is always forced? mkinitrd provided a limited set of commands needed by kernels to automate generating ramdisks. This interface is what both initramfs-tools and yaird implemented and still used by kernel-package. I believe that option caused problems in the past for initramfs-tools to have that option enabled by default, leading to the change in 0.53 (or really 0.53c). Why do recent linux-2.6 need to introduce the use of the -t option? read man update-initramfs -t section. I did. It describes a feature of a generic tool, not about special needs of official Debian kernels. we want to be sure to really ship the latest modules, it has to be reentrant.
