Bug#533133: linux-image-2.6.30-1-amd64: iwlagn fails with Microcode SW error
Package: linux-image-2.6.30-1-amd64 Version: 2.6.30-1 Severity: normal Hi, trying the 2.6.30-1-amd64 package, it seems to have problems with wireless stuff. It works fine on 2.6.29-2-amd64, but with 2.6.30-1-amd64, it first connects and then hangs, and in dmesg I get: [ 239.780615] iwlagn :03:00.0: Microcode SW error detected. Restarting 0x200. After that, nothing works until I reload the module. But the SW error appears as soon as there is some traffic so it's quite unusable. cor...@hidalgo: ls /lib/firmware total 1,1M -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 34K jun 10 2008 dvb-usb-dib0700-1.10.fw -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 148K avr 1 16:43 iwlwifi-3945-1.ucode -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 147K avr 1 16:43 iwlwifi-3945-2.ucode -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 184K avr 1 16:43 iwlwifi-4965-1.ucode -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 184K avr 1 16:43 iwlwifi-4965-2.ucode -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 337K avr 1 16:43 iwlwifi-5000-1.ucode ii firmware-iwlwifi 0.16 Binary firmware for Intel Wireless 3945, 4965 and 5000-series cards If you need more info, please ask. Bug#528482: openct package need several fixes
Hi Eric, thanks for updating the openct package. Enhanced pcscd should be dropped, since 99% of the users do something wrong if they install openct and pcscd at the same time. Usualy it is best to use either opensc with openct. or opensc (or other apps) with pcscd and a reader driver (e.g. libccid) other than openct. Does this mean we should disable it at configure time? no need for that. with pcsc option enabled we build the pcsc driver in ifdhandler format. it is an extra binary and only uses a few bytes of disk space, so no harm for the normal users. and those who want to use it can configure pcscd to do so. Bug#533138: /usr/bin/evince: evince renders fonts terribly when a pdf also includes embedded fonts
Package: evince Version: 2.24.2-2 File: /usr/bin/evince Severity: important *** Please type your report below this line *** I am not sure this is logged in the right place, it might belong against poppler. I can't see any duplicate bugs, but apologies if so, I don't know what I am doing. So, many PDFs render fine for me, but some produce terribly blocky text. I don't have any examples that I can redistribute, but any journal article downloaded from www.jstor.org seems to exhibit the problem. I have have done some research to try and figure out what is going on. The following bug reports against ubuntu and arch-linux seem to repeat what I see, and suggest it is to do with a conflict between application anti-aliasing and freetype autohinting when pdfs include embedded fonts, and that some packages (poppler derived) don't use fontconfig and so a simple dpkg-reconfigure fontconfig-config is not enough. Package: netatalk Version: 2.0.4~rc2-1 Severity: serious Okay, perhaps I am cluless or there's something seriously wrong with my system, but this has never failed me in the past. I am try to rebuild the package from source to enable openSSL. Going through the following apt-get source netatalk cd netatalk-2.0.4~rc2 dpkg-buildpackage (with or without DEB_BUILD_OPTIONS=openssl) will die with the following below. BTW (and perhaps this should be its own separate bug), the README.Debian seems to suggest openssl support is not need to connect to OS X 10.4 and higher, but TimeMachine won't connect with the stock build. Every mail notification steals the focus. Also, if there is an alert, the focus is stolen (arguably it should), but it seems that it's stolen repeatedly if the alert window is not closed. Therefore the configure scripts detects the python binary, but python-minimal doesn't include all the needed modules for the test suite and a standard python is needed for it. Bug#531515: [Pkg-ia32-libs-maintainers] Processed: Re: Bug#531515: ia32-apt-get: breaks dpkg --control (= 1.15.1) and debsums
Hi, thank you for starcing the problem. Too me it looks like debsums calls dpkg-deb in an undocumented (although not uncommon for tools in general) way: 4: /usr/bin/dpkg-deb --control -- /var/cache/apt/archives/bzip2_1.0.5-2_amd64.deb /tmp/gD4mFRK2gm/DEBIAN According to the manpage the syntax is: -e, --control archive [directory] There is no mention in the docs that dpkg-deb supports --. Maybe because it is such a common option. Your patch isn't correct though, at least not complete. Think of this invocation: dpkg-deb --control -- /var/cache/apt/archives/bzip2_1.0.5-2_amd64.deb In that case, despite having 3 arguments, the DIR has to default to $(pwd)/DEBIAN. I guess there is no way around fully scanning the arguments and counting the valid bits. That should allow the use of the -D option as well. Bug#531978: libgphoto2: Please modernize udev rules
Hello again, Martin Pitt [2009-06-05 14:50 +0200]: This debdiff applies it to the Debian package and also moves udev rule creation from postinst to debian/rules. This is possible now, since from udev 136 on, rules are shipped in /lib/udev/rules.d/, thus avoid becoming conffiles. As with the other patch, this unfortunately missed to set CAMLIBS, to ensure to load the libs from the package build tree. Fixed patch attached. Fortunately the patch only improves the situation: There is no point in adding these headers for Maildir or imap and other storages are unchanged. (It would also save about 1MB diskspace for me.) Bug#532814: coreutils: cp -aL creates hardlinks where none were present before
brian m. carlson wrote: Package: coreutils Version: 7.4-2 Thanks for taking the time to report that. If I create a directory structure such as the following: a: total 2 drwxr-xr-x 2 bmc bmc 1024 2009-06-11 21:06 dir lrwxrwxrwx 1 bmc bmc4 2009-06-11 21:06 link - ../b a/dir: total 0 lrwxrwxrwx 1 bmc bmc 7 2009-06-11 21:06 link - ../../b b: total 2 -rw-r--r-- 1 bmc bmc 5 2009-06-11 21:06 file and then run cp -aL a/* c, then the copies of file (in c) become hard links to each other. This behavior is not documented, and it does not occur if I use -LR instead of -aL. It appears to be triggered by --preserve=links. That is correct, and deliberate. With --preserve=links, when cp detects two source files with the same inode, it must arrange for the corresponding names to be hard linked in the destination tree. That is what preserve=links means. The trick is to realize that when you invoke cp with -L, that tells cp to use stat (which never sees a symlink) rather than lstat to determine inode numbers. So those two symlinks to the same file appear (to cp -L) as hard links, and it preserves that attribute because you used -a, which includes --preserve=links. My opinion is that this behavior is incorrect[0], but I don't care very much one way or the other. If this behavior is intentional, it should be clearly documented in the manual page, at the very least. Either changing the behavior or documenting the behavior[1] is satisfactory for me. I reproduced with this: $ mkdir c; touch f; ln -s f a; ln -s f b; cp -aL a b c; ls -i1 c 74161745 a 74161745 b [0] That is, --preserve=links should preserve symlinks as symlinks and hard links as hard links. Just because -L forces all symlinks to be dereferenced does not mean that I want to preserve symlinks as hard links. --preserve=links preserves *hard* links. By definition (POSIX), cp -L can never produce a symlink. [1] This information should be present in the manual page, not just in the info page (which I almost never read). Sorry, but this corner is obscure enough that any explanation belongs in the info documentation. In fact, there are already comments in the texinfo sources saying that this deserves explanation. I wrote a few words on -L and added to the --preserve=links description: `links' Preserve in the destination files any links between corresponding source files. Note that with `-L' or `-H', this option can convert symbolic links to hard links. For example, $ mkdir c; : a; ln -s a b; cp -aH a b c; ls -i1 c 74161745 a 74161745 b Note the inputs: `b' is a symlink to regular file `a', yet the files in destination directory, `c/', are hard-linked. Since `-a' implies `--preserve=links', and since `-H' tells `cp' to dereference command line arguments, it sees two files with the same inode number, and preserves the perceived hard link. Here is a similar example that exercises `cp''s `-L' option: $ mkdir b c; (cd b; : a; ln -s a b); cp -aL b c; ls -i1 c/b 74163295 a 74163295 b Here's the patch: From 7d350170ae78e1aca68aff81a08116109dd33be5 Mon Sep 17 00:00:00 2001 From: Jim Meyering meyer...@redhat.com Date: Mon, 15 Jun 2009 09:10:50 +0200 Subject: [PATCH] doc: cp: describe an oddity of combining -H/-L and --preserve=links * doc/coreutils.texi (cp invocation) [-L]: Elaborate. Asterisk creates its own pidfile, and there's no reason that we should switch from it to start-stop-daemon. Ok. Bug#533141: Current netatalk fails to build from source
2009/6/15 Itai Seggev is+deb...@cs.hmc.edu: Package: netatalk Version: 2.0.4~rc2-1 Severity: serious Okay, perhaps I am cluless or there's something seriously wrong with my system, but this has never failed me in the past. I am try to rebuild the package from source to enable openSSL. Please re-read the netatalk 2.0.4 release notes. For encrypted password support netatalk now can use libgcrypt instead of OpenSSL. libgcrypt is used by the DHX2 authentication mech. BTW (and perhaps this should be its own separate bug), the README.Debian seems to suggest openssl support is not need to connect to OS X 10.4 and higher, but TimeMachine won't connect with the stock build. I'm not sure if I'm misunderstanding the readme me, it is wrong, or I have some misconfiguration. Needed authentication mechanisms for certain OS X releases is an entirely different issue then TimeMachine support. 10.5 requires some encrypted password mech (DHX, DHX2, randnum, gss) while TimeMachine is not supported with 2.0.4. It will be in 2.1. Please remember to report upstream fixable issues upstream. -Frank -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-dist-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Bug#533134: patch to fix this
The attached patch fixes this problem. In this patch I removed the strerror() from the malloc() failure messages. It seems very unlikely that strerror_r() will add any useful information to a malloc() failure. However anything which uses memory has the potential to fail after malloc() failure. The ideal thing to do would be to have a special function to handle malloc() failures in which you try to avoid allocating any memory. Then you can wrap malloc(), calloc(), etc with functions such as xmalloc(), xcalloc(), etc and the calling code won't even need to display an error message. I would be happy to implement the ideal solution to this and some other issues if you will take over upstream maintenance and make the Debian patches be part of an official release. The Debian patches are becoming difficult to manage and I don't want to increase their scope. diff -ru libcsoap-1.1.0-old/libcsoap/soap-ctx.c libcsoap-1.1.0/libcsoap/soap-ctx.c --- libcsoap-1.1.0-old/libcsoap/soap-ctx.c 2009-06-15 15:54:02.0 +1000 +++ libcsoap-1.1.0/libcsoap/soap-ctx.c 2009-06-15 16:09:06.0 +1000 @@ -48,7 +48,7 @@ if (!(ctx = (SoapCtx *) malloc(sizeof(SoapCtx { -log_error2(malloc failed (%s), strerror(errno)); +log_error1(malloc failed); return NULL; } diff -ru libcsoap-1.1.0-old/libcsoap/soap-env.c libcsoap-1.1.0/libcsoap/soap-env.c --- libcsoap-1.1.0-old/libcsoap/soap-env.c 2006-07-10 02:24:19.0 +1000 +++ libcsoap-1.1.0/libcsoap/soap-env.c 2009-06-15 16:09:30.0 +1000 @@ -181,7 +181,7 @@ if (!(env = (SoapEnv *) malloc(sizeof(SoapEnv { -log_error2(malloc failed (%s), strerror(errno)); +log_error1(malloc failed); return herror_new(soap_env_from_doc, GENERAL_INVALID_PARAM, malloc failed); } diff -ru libcsoap-1.1.0-old/libcsoap/soap-router.c libcsoap-1.1.0/libcsoap/soap-router.c --- libcsoap-1.1.0-old/libcsoap/soap-router.c 2006-07-10 02:24:19.0 +1000 +++ libcsoap-1.1.0/libcsoap/soap-router.c 2009-06-15 16:09:17.0 +1000 @@ -44,7 +44,7 @@ if (!(router = (SoapRouter *) malloc(sizeof(SoapRouter { -log_error2(malloc failed (%s), strerror(errno)); +log_error1(malloc failed); return NULL; } memset(router, 0, sizeof(SoapRouter)); diff -ru libcsoap-1.1.0-old/libcsoap/soap-server.c libcsoap-1.1.0/libcsoap/soap-server.c --- libcsoap-1.1.0-old/libcsoap/soap-server.c 2006-07-10 02:24:19.0 +1000 +++ libcsoap-1.1.0/libcsoap/soap-server.c 2009-06-15 16:09:25.0 +1000 @@ -211,7 +211,7 @@ if (!(node = (SoapRouterNode *) malloc(sizeof(SoapRouterNode { -log_error2(malloc failed (%s), strerror(errno)); +log_error1(malloc failed); return NULL; } diff -ru libcsoap-1.1.0-old/nanohttp/nanohttp-request.c libcsoap-1.1.0/nanohttp/nanohttp-request.c --- libcsoap-1.1.0-old/nanohttp/nanohttp-request.c 2009-06-15 15:54:02.0 +1000 +++ libcsoap-1.1.0/nanohttp/nanohttp-request.c 2009-06-15 15:56:14.0 +1000 @@ -52,7 +52,7 @@ if (!(req = (hrequest_t *) malloc(sizeof(hrequest_t { - log_error2(malloc failed (%s), strerror(errno)); + log_error1(malloc failed); return NULL; } @@ -175,7 +175,7 @@ { if (!(tmppair = (hpair_t *) malloc(sizeof(hpair_t { - log_error2(malloc failed (%s), strerror(errno)); + log_error1(malloc failed); return NULL; } diff -ru libcsoap-1.1.0-old/nanohttp/nanohttp-response.c libcsoap-1.1.0/nanohttp/nanohttp-response.c --- libcsoap-1.1.0-old/nanohttp/nanohttp-response.c 2006-07-10 02:24:19.0 +1000 +++ libcsoap-1.1.0/nanohttp/nanohttp-response.c 2009-06-15 16:00:43.0 +1000 @@ -53,7 +53,7 @@ /* create response object */ if (!(res = (hresponse_t *) malloc(sizeof(hresponse_t { - log_error2(malloc failed (%s), strerror(errno)); + log_error1(malloc failed); return NULL; } diff -ru libcsoap-1.1.0-old/nanohttp/nanohttp-server.c libcsoap-1.1.0/nanohttp/nanohttp-server.c --- libcsoap-1.1.0-old/nanohttp/nanohttp-server.c 2006-07-10 02:24:19.0 +1000 +++ libcsoap-1.1.0/nanohttp/nanohttp-server.c 2009-06-15 16:00:31.0 +1000 @@ -249,7 +249,7 @@ if (!(service = (hservice_t *) malloc(sizeof(hservice_t { -log_error2(malloc failed (%s), strerror(errno)); +log_error1(malloc failed); return -1; } @@ -516,8 +516,7 @@ if (!(conn = (httpd_conn_t *) malloc(sizeof(httpd_conn_t { - -log_error2(malloc failed (%s), strerror(errno)); +log_error1(malloc failed); return NULL; } conn-sock = sock; @@ -576,7 +575,7 @@ if (!(tmp = (char *) calloc(1, len))) { -log_error2(calloc failed (%s), strerror(errno)); +log_error1(calloc failed); return -1; } @@ -968,7 +967,10 @@ pthread_sigmask(SIG_BLOCK, thrsigset, NULL); if ((err = pthread_create((conn-tid), (conn-attr), httpd_session_main, conn))) -

I think the code is pretty clever, but it's a hard problem when you are operating with no clear rules about what is permitted in the init hook. :-) Unfortunately, I will not be able to use the internet for a week from now. Bug#532766: please make mutt not modify message on saving or copying (content-length, lines)
Hallo Hartmut, Am 2009-06-15 09:22:24, schrieb Helmut Grohne: Thanks for your quick answer. Could you give any reference for this statement? The statement is practically untrue. This is from the RFC's about Mailheaders, and it is also written, that the the receiver should not expect, that ALL headers are available. Also messages are often needed verbatim (for instance for reporting spam). Why should a message change, only because it got moved from one mailbox to another? The message is changed the first time when you access it and I even have not accessed a message and found Content-Lenght: header in message which where only accessed by libnet-imap-simple-perl. I do not believe, the perllib has put the header into the message. Are you sure, it is mutt who is adding the Content-Lenght: header? Fortunately the patch only improves the situation: There is no point in adding these headers for Maildir or imap and other storages are unchanged. (It would also save about 1MB diskspace for me.) Bug#532970: jocaml and use topfind
Guillaume Yziquel a écrit : Mehdi Dogguy a écrit : This another bug. The point of Guillaume is that #use topfind is not working not that the toplevel library doesn't work. I admit that the two problems are related but somehow completely different. My point was indeed that the topfind script relies on the toploop.cmi interface. Not finding in jocaml, it looks for it in ocaml. Ack. But it wasn't clear… Next upload of JoCaml will (at least) install the toplevel library (already fixed in Git). I'll look at the ocamlfind problem when I find time. I'm leaving this bug open as a reminder. Bug#526489: Re: Bug#526489: Time to orphan eclipse? (Bug#526489: eclipse: should this package be orphaned?)
Hi *, can I be of any help? I don't think that I have the time to take over the entire packaging of Eclipse in Debian - at least not at the moment, but I can offer to help and advice anyone who would be willing to do this. I am building all those packages that you can download from eclipse.org/downloads and we are just a few days away from the next major release - Galileo. So, maybe not the best moment to 'orphan' Eclipse in Debian. Personally I think it would be great to have a newer version of Eclipse and its tools in Debian. Or did you contact one of the persons of the Linux Distro Project? Maybe they have some resources they can spend on that? Third and last warning, I will orphan eclipse next saturday (20th June), so if somebody from the Java team is interested, please step up now. Usually, I would have orphaned the package already, but I was hoping from somebody from the team take over it. Sadly, I did not get a word from any of the uploaders (a i am not longer interested email would have been nice) or from somebody else from the team. For the record, even if the last version we have in Debian is 3.2.2, there was some work done (from one year ago) in the SVN for the version 3.4: http://svn.debian.org/wsvn/pkg-java/trunk/eclipse/debian/?op=logrev=0sc=0isdir=1 On Fri, May 01, 2009 at 04:33:20PM +0200, Ana Guerrero wrote: Package: eclipse Version: 3.2.2-6.1 Severity: important After being hit by #507536 (merged with #511713, #515747) and read http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=507536#104 I have been looking at the status of eclipse in Debian. Eclipse's packaging is under the umbrella of the Debian Java Maintainers, but it is currently lacking of a main maintainer. Latest maintainer upload was almost a year ago (8 May 2008), and the package has missed a few upstream releases (Current version is 3.4.2) since then. I am cc'ing all the people listed in the uploaders field, are you still interested in maintaining eclipse? Bug#531515: [Pkg-ia32-libs-maintainers] Processed: Re: Bug#531515: ia32-apt-get: breaks dpkg --control (= 1.15.1) and debsums
Hi Goswin, Goswin von Brederlow schrieb am Fri, Jun 12, 2009 at 09:20:32PM +0200: thank you for starcing the problem. Too me it looks like debsums calls dpkg-deb in an undocumented (although not uncommon for tools in general) way: I don't think it's debsums. Debsums calls dpkg without --, see line 491 of debsums: 491 system 'dpkg', '--control', $deb, $control But it doesn't call dpkg-deb, but dpkg (which is ok) and dpkg adds this -- since 1.15.1. 4: /usr/bin/dpkg-deb --control -- /var/cache/apt/archives/bzip2_1.0.5-2_amd64.deb /tmp/gD4mFRK2gm/DEBIAN According to the manpage the syntax is: -e, --control archive [directory] There is no mention in the docs that dpkg-deb supports --. Then it's a bug that it's not documented anywhere else than in the dpkg 1.15.1 changelog entry: * When dpkg delegates to dpkg-query or dpkg-deb to do the actual work, add the -- marker to explicitely document the end of options so that arguments starting with a dash are not interpreted as options. Closes: #293163 Thanks to Bill Allombert for the patch. Your patch isn't correct though, at least not complete. Think of this invocation: dpkg-deb --control -- /var/cache/apt/archives/bzip2_1.0.5-2_amd64.deb There you are right. Missed that one. In that case, despite having 3 arguments, the DIR has to default to $(pwd)/DEBIAN. I guess there is no way around fully scanning the arguments and counting the valid bits. Bug#525893: wicd: claims to be connected to wired network when actually on wireless

It's very obvious - you pick a wireless network, and it goes through the entire connection sequence correctly, and then it says ok! I'm connected to the wired network. All the user interfaces are consistent in this error. Would you please test the package from experimental? I didn't see this behaviour with 1.5.9-5, and am not seeing it in 1.6.0-2~pre1. Maybe something's wrong in your setup? Before asking more, please try out the new package. It might be an already-fixed bug :) David -- . ''`.
