Bug#537749: [Pkg-xfce-devel] Bug#537749: xfce4-settings: xfce4 loses keyboard layout settings after restart

Xfce4 came preconfigured to us layout, No, Xfce autodetects what X is using. See X documentation to manage that (hint: dpkg-reconfigure console-setup). I am a bit confused about this, please forgive my deep ignorance about X and xfce4 configuration. I assume you mean $ dkpg-reconfigure xserver-xorg as console-setup is just used for tty's and these are working fine with es layout. No, things changed recently. X now uses what console-setup uses, through hal. So first thing is to dpkg-reconfigure console-setup and configure it correctly. Then check in “pure” xorg (startx /usr/bin/xterm) how is the layout configured. (Anyway I tried it out too.) But no use: after both reconfigures the keyboard keeps us layout, and after a reboot everything is back to abnormal (i.e. us layout, xfce4-keyboard-settings not working). Of course it is not writing out an xorg.conf file, but that is a different issue. Check /var/log/Xorg.0.log (or the startx /usr/bin/xterm) to see what X is really using. First fix that. Also, I have not checked use system defaults, so why should xfce4 care about what X is using? Because, by default, xfce will autodetect what X uses and use that. Changing the layout only works during the session. I am trying to tell it explicitly to ignore any X configuration and use an es layout. Can it be done? Yes, chose first a keyboard model, then a keyboard layout. What am I doing wrong? Or is it some kind of configuration bug? so I changed it to Spanish es layout. However, after a system restart it turns back to us layout, even if es is the only configured option. Yes, it seems the configuration is saved only when you chose a *layout*. And what you're chosing is a *keymap*. Another way to have it remembered is to check/uncheck the “use X configuration”. Now I am really confused. It says es under Layout, empty variant; so I don't know why I am choosing a keymap. Even if I have two layouts (us and es), switching between the two does not help. Why is it saving the configuration after I add or remove a layout, but not when I choose one from the list? It seems there is a bug there. When you're only adding a layout (and not a keyboard model, or not checking/unchecking the “Use X configuration”), no config file is written, so nothing is changed in what X uses (see above for X stuff) This is already reported, you can follow and comment upstream bug report at http://bugzilla.xfce.org/show_bug.cgi?id=5205 Cheers, -- Yves-Alexis signature.asc Description: This is a digitally signed message part

Bug#531341: Debian bug 531341
From: Goswin von Brederlow goswin-...@web.de Nicolas François nicolas.franc...@centraliens.net writes: On Mon, Jul 20, 2009 at 02:01:27PM -0500, tallg...@austin.rr.com wrote: I think that you're confusing the requirement that unknown user names not be logged, because they might be a user's password with the non-existent requirement that all unknown user names be treated like root and not prompted for a password. No, I was not mentioning the case where an user types her password instead of her username. If you still think you're right, I'd like to see the source for the requirement. I've been through a number of formal evaluations as the vendor lead (IBM) and we never had that requirement under any evaluation scheme. I cannot point you to any source of requirements, except mine: 1. root's password should not be transmitted on insecure lines = The password should not be prompted if login is on an insecure line and login thinks the user might be root. 2. root can mistype her username = Any invalid user might be a mistyped root You can run some heuristic: 1) if user exists and is not root then it is probably not mistyped 2) if user is similar to root (like rot) then assume mistyped 3) assume normal user otherwise What do you do when rot, roto, rott, et alia, exist? Again, you're leaking user name information and leaving the system open to a (slightly more limited) User Enumeration attack. In a real evaluation, which is the claimed justification for this behavior, you don't get to slack off on one requirement to make up for another. If root mistypes his user name as kfgerjhfgsdgfvedj I think then we can blame root itself. Same if root allows a user rot to be created and then mistypes his name. In the end the user name is clearly visible. Watch what you type. The user name in only visible to the user and anyone sniffing the connection. Since the user knows what they've typed, that leaves packet sniffers. Conveniently the problem at hand is one of a legitimate root user entering their password and having it sniffed. This leaves two choices -- 1). You prevent the packet sniffer from knowing, with certainty, that they have the correct root password, by denying access, regardless of the password. 2). You prevent the packet sniffer from having an opportunity to sniff the packet by refusing the connection. While this satisfies Nicholas' requirement, it fails on Human Factors because users tend to type their name and password in very quick succession. Which now results in the password being in the user name location in the sign on dialog. In either instance, the layered security of the system protects itself -- unless the attacker has access to a secure TTY, they can get a million root passwords and they will still be denied access. 3. login should not leak information about the valid usernames on the system. = The user should be prompted a password whether the username is valid or not. We all know there is a root user already so no information is leaked. :) Not at all -- there are protection profiles where the privileged user must have the ability to change their name. In those profiles, the name of the super-user is considered to be privileged information, and having it be public by making it root violates the profile. I do not think those requirements can be satisfied at the same time. But near enough. Well ... I think what's being described is Security Through Obscurity. I'd still like to see a protection profile which requires the described behavior. As it stands, the alternatives all permit a User Enumeration attack of some form or another. -- Julie. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-dist-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#537749: [Pkg-xfce-devel] Bug#537749: xfce4-settings: xfce4 loses keyboard layout settings after restart

(==) Assigned the driver to the xf86ConfigLayout (**) Option XkbLayout us (**) default keyboard: XkbLayout: us Even after a console-setup reconfigure, and without an /etc/X11/xorg.conf file. So it doesn't work. Meanwhile tty's work fine and use es layout. Also, I have not checked use system defaults, so why should xfce4 care about what X is using? Because, by default, xfce will autodetect what X uses and use that. Changing the layout only works during the session. So the layout is stored, but not applied for the next session? Strange. Wouldn't it make more sense to reapply the keyboard settings for the next session, if use system defaults is not set? It seems there is a bug there. When you're only adding a layout (and not a keyboard model, or not checking/unchecking the “Use X configuration”), no config file is written, so nothing is changed in what X uses (see above for X stuff) This is already reported, you can follow and comment upstream bug report at http://bugzilla.xfce.org/show_bug.cgi?id=5205 OK. So, to clarify things, there are three different issues here: - X server does not pick up the console keyboard settings configured with console-setup. - xfce4 does not set its own keyboard layout, even when told to ignore system defaults. - xfce4 does not change its settings when selecting a keyboard layout (but it does when picking a different model or changing use system defaults. Last to first: the third one is already reported upstream. For the second one I am waiting to hear your opinion, and then maybe report it upstream. So only the first one remains. If you agree with the analysis above, can you reassign this Debian bug to the proper X package (xserver-xorg maybe) to try and solve the first issue? tag 537818 +moreinfo thanks Hi Grzegorz, thanks for your report; unfortunately it's not complete so I need to ask you more information; can you reproduce this bug with a fresh mutt installation and a new maildir? Is there a maildir that you can gzip and send to us where the crash is reproducible? It will also be useful to have the muttdebug, the core file (especially this) and other info; my best advise is to have a look at this document: http://wiki.debian.org/Teams/Mutt#Howtoreportabug And provide us with the .muttrd, the corefile and the .muttdebug0; as usual they should contain the minimal amount of info to reproduce the bug, please let me know if you have any questions. Bug#536726: Regarding CVE-2009-2446: Problems with COM_CREATE_DB etc.
Hi, Christian! On Jul 21, Christian Hammers wrote: Hello MysQL Debian was notified about http://cve.mitre.org/cgi-bin/cvename.cgi?name=CVE-2009-2446 and we would like to backport the fix to our already release 5.0.51 package. Can you confirm that the below snipped is a proper fix? It comments out the two commands COM_CREATE_DB and COM_DROP_DB like I saw it in the 5.1 branch. Yes, your fix should be fine. If you want to have these commands working, you can apply a standard fix for these kinds of problems, like - mysql_log.write(thd,command,packet); + mysql_log.write(thd,command,%s,packet); Sadly the sql_parse.cc file is too big to be viewed using bazaar (gives timeouts) and I cannot find the original commit or a bug in bugs.mysql.com which would give me some hints if other changes were necessary. This is our fix for 5.0: http://lists.mysql.com/commits/77649 you probably won't be able to see the bug itself, it's private until the released version will be out. Bug#537750: [Pkg-ia32-libs-maintainers] Bug#537750: ia32-apt-get: libc6-i386 uninstallable
2009/7/21 Goswin von Brederlow goswin-...@web.de: Michal Suchanek hramr...@centrum.cz writes: Package: ia32-apt-get Version: 22 Severity: important I tried installing wine and it forces installation of libc6-i386 from the i386 repository as opposed the amd64 one which fails. E: Couldn't configure pre-depend libc6-i386 for libc6-i386, probably a dependency cycle. A package failed to install. Trying to recover: Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information... Done Reading extended state information Initializing package states... Done Writing extended state information... Done It has resolved itself now as 2.9-21 has been autobuild on amd64. But the situation can be avoided in the future. libc6-i386 (and the other lib32* packages) need to be filtered out for amd64. There shouldn't be a libc6-i386 i386 package on amd64, only on ia64. My bad. If you pin 32bit packages lower than 64bit packages then the problem goes away too. See the docs for example entries. I wonder though why aptitude picks the uninstallable package in its solution. I've seen it pick a lower version and even lower pin for a package because that would make it installable. I would have thought it would pick libc6-i386 2.9-20 (amd64) instead of 2.9-21~22 (i386) here too. I would guess it's because wine depends on 2.9.21 so the 2.9.20 is not sufficient. Otherwise there would be no reason to upgrade from 2.9.20 after it was pulled in by gcc-multilib. Bug#507342: vim-vimoutliner: poor defaults for dark background users
Perhaps vim colour detection can somehow be improved, or perhaps it would be nice if everyone could agree that terminals doing dark backgrounds define TERM=xterm-dark and then we can wait for the world's remote computers to start supporting that without falling in a heap when they see an unsupported terminal (...) That sounded quiet complicated and out of the scope of a single vim addon package. Thinking about what you've said, this seems indeed a lot simpler than previously thought. I will think about if I should forward this or fix it myself. Ah, sorry, I was being overly verbose, and should have left that paragraph out completely, as it only really says: In a perfect world ... but we don't live there, so let's try this instead: My main point was that the plumbing does not seem to be connected by default, and there are no (correct) hints in any of the obvious places how this should normally be done. If it's possible to make it detect that the background is dark, that would be even better, but if not then I think the darkest colour on the light-background scheme should still be just visible on a dark background, and vice versa. It's very frustrating to start up outline mode and see nothing, especially when you're not sure which configuration option you were meant to tweak to get it working, and when you do get it right the test file you were editing becomes largely invisible, so you keep on trying past that and break it again a few times before realising that you're looking at black-on-black. I personally think it's quite common not to have a joystick attached all the time, thus working around init-script failures in the postinst script would be justifyable. A possible work-around could be the use of dh_installinit --error-handler=true which would just inhibit any init-script error. Bug#537830: timidity: check of /usr/share/doc/* in init-script violates policy
Package: timidity Version: 2.13.2-29 Severity: serious Hello, timidity's init-script test for the existence of /usr/share/doc/timidity-daemon violates the Debian policy 12.3.: Packages must not require the existence of any files in `/usr/share/doc/' in order to function. A far more clean split between timidity and timidity-daemon would be to just move /etc/init.d/timidity and /etc/default/timidity to timidity-daemon since they are not used otherwise in timidity itself than for daemon-purposes. Bug#537842: Accessibility (beep) support in cryptdisks/cryptroot
Package: cryptsetup Version: 2:1.0.7~rc1-2 Severity: wishlist Hello again, On 20/06/2009 Andrew Pollock wrote: On Tue, Jun 02, 2009 at 07:05:35PM +0200, Jonas Meurer wrote: On 27/02/2009 Andrew Pollock wrote: We've got a blind user, and we've modified the cryptroot initramfs stuff so that it issues a two-tone beep when the password prompt (for disk encryption) is displayed, and another two-tone beep after the disk is successfully decrypted. We've made these changes against cryptsetup 1.0.5-2 that's in Ubuntu 8.04, in such a way as they can be opt-out by default, and opted in by a config file in /etc/initramfs-tools/conf.d We'd like to get the changes back in upstream so we don't have to keep maintaining them. It means for us, we'd just opt-in via the configuration file, but by default it wouldn't beep. The benefit for Debian: support for blind users with disk encryption at early boot. that indeed would be a great benefit for debian. please provide any patches that you have. It looks like 1.0.6 is a bit different, notably the password prompting seems to be unified into /lib/cryptsetup/askpass regardless of whether a boot splash is used or not. That simplifies things and complicates things at the same time. askpass now is the prefered method to prompt for passwords. it even may be used for different passphrase prompts that don't correspond to cryptsetup in the future. I'm happy to provide a patch, my main question is are you okay with askpass.c calling out to the beep binary from the beep package (this would introduce a dependency on the beep package), or do we have to embed beep functionality directly into askpass.c? I would prefer to not introduce any direct dependencies for askpass. instead a small beep function should be provided in askpass.c directly. So I've just put some more thought into this. Here's the problem: the way we're currently implementing the audible prompts are as follows: 1) the user receives a two-tone beep when the password prompt is displayed 2) the user receives a (different) two-tone beep when the encrypted device is successfully decrypted If they get their password wrong, they receive the same two-tone beep as is emitted at step 1. This continues until they get their password right. When the user hears the second type of two-tone beep, they know everything is in order and the system is continuing to boot. So we've got an intern who's essentially patched (1) above into askpass.c, but of course askpass.c is merely prompting for the password. In order to implement (2), there's still the need to emit a beep outside of askpass, which at this point is going to introduce a dependency on the beep binary I think. Do you have any suggestions or see any alternatives? I'd think at this point if the beep binary is still necessary in the initramfs for the post-decrypted beep, it makes no sense to go embedding it inside askpass.c I see the problem. And I'm not sure what to do about it yet, as I don't want do add yet another initramfs dependency for cryptroot. But maybe for now the best is to use the beep binary directly and check for both existance of the binary and a 'beep' crypttab option in askpass, cryptroot initramfs script and initscript before actually invoking it. the cryptroot initramfs hook could check for the beep crypttab option and only add the beep binary to initramfs in that case. that way the default initramfs will not differ except the few extra lines of code that check for and invoke beep. greetings, jonas PS: I reported that as wishlist bugreport to not forget about it. signature.asc Description: Digital signature

There must be some other software as well, I remember at least a 3rd one needs it, but can't remember it's name. And what do they use? xen.xm? xen.lowlevel? In both cases, the goal is to avoid forking yet another process, by calling xm list, xm stop or xm start for example, by simply including some python code and calling the main. Forking a tool is the way to go since Unix was invented. That is why fork is fast. But okay, so they use xen.xm.main. This makes absolutely no sense to me, and also, I don't think that being a maintainer gives you the rights to decide for everyone using the distribution. In Debian the maintainer have the power to decide this. However, they can be overwritten by the developers at all or the technical committee.[1] But best practice is to listen to suggestions, and be open for discussions, no? Suggestions to drop support are no good start for a discussion. Also, if there's no /usr/lib/xen, what is the point of having a /etc/alternatives/xen-default? I'd like to understand. There is a /usr/lib/xen-default. This link is meant as a last resort fallback in case it can't decide which version to use.[2] So in theory you can use a handmade Xen with a prebuilt version of the userspace. My point is that there should be a /usr/lib/xen, and there is no reason that Debian is the only distro. in the world that doesn't have one, it's not standard, and always causes issues. No, Xen have several definitions, where it tries to install to by default. /usr/lib/xen is only one. Bug#537830: timidity: check of /usr/share/doc/* in init-script violates policy
On Tuesday 21 July 2009 11:05:18 Mario 'BitKoenig' Holbe wrote: Package: timidity Version: 2.13.2-29 Severity: serious Hello, timidity's init-script test for the existence of /usr/share/doc/timidity-daemon violates the Debian policy 12.3.: Packages must not require the existence of any files in `/usr/share/doc/' in order to function. Ouch! A far more clean split between timidity and timidity-daemon would be to just move /etc/init.d/timidity and /etc/default/timidity to timidity-daemon since they are not used otherwise in timidity itself than for daemon-purposes. This would also simplify the init-script code a little bit. The reason I didn't take that approach is because I couldn't easily provide a transparent upgrade path here, but since indeed the current approach violates policy I think I will go for /etc/init.d/timidity in timidity-daemon. I very much appreciate the quick feedback and will give the whole idea some more thought. thanks, Joost -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-dist-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#537846: tftpd-hpa: wipes /etc/default config file without permission
Package: tftpd-hpa Version: 5.0-2 Severity: serious Hi, The tftpd-hpa package blows away any change a user made to /etc/default/tfpd-hpa. This is not allowed by policy, and a warning message that tells you not to edit the file directly does not solve this. You have several options: - Allow the user to set a variable in the config file that, if set, will prevent the package to blow it away; - Read the config file in your tftpd-hpa.config script, and use it (with db_set) to seed the defaults of your debconf configuration. If you take this option, you should take care not to remove any additional customization the user might have made (for instance by using sed to edit the file); - Combine the above two (which is the preferable option) For an example of the last option, see the nbd-client package. -- System Information: Debian Release: squeeze/sid APT prefers unstable APT policy: (500, 'unstable') Architecture: amd64 (x86_64) Kernel: Linux 2.6.30-1-amd64 (SMP w/2 CPU cores) Locale: LANG=nl_BE.UTF-8, LC_CTYPE=nl_BE.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/bash Versions of packages tftpd-hpa depends on: ii adduser 3.110 add and remove users and groups ii debconf [debconf-2.0] 1.5.27 Debian configuration management sy ii libc6 2.9-21 GNU C Library: Shared libraries ii libwrap0 7.6.q-18 Wietse Venema's TCP wrappers libra tftpd-hpa recommends no packages. Subject: e16keyedit: Do not edit properly the actions since e16 1.0 Package: e16keyedit Version: 0.5.0-1 Severity: important e16keyedit behaves strangely since e16 was upgraded to 1.0 version. When lauched, all the entries of Action to perform column are set to Move Window by area [X Y]. It seems to be still possible to configure some actions, but some of them do not work (only the key combinations are written in .e16/bindings.cfg, with no action following them). Launching again e16keyedit after the modifications will anyway give again a full Move Window by area [X Y] column. I did not investigate further, but e16keyedit does not seem very usable now. Bug#537853: debian-i18n: Adding a link to the PTS for translation related data Provide data
Package: debian-i18n Severity: wishlist Hi, Stefano Zacchiroli talked with me about adding a link to the PTS regarding translations. i18n.debian.net should provide a file with the list of source packages that should have such link (i.e. the source packages where we detected PO files) source package version percentage The percentage is still unclear. It could be an overall translation percentage (based on the existing PO files), or it could represent the number of languages (why not even a percentage of the world population) It can be a constant in the first run. The intended audience of the PTS are the debian maintainers, not the translators, this is the reason why there is just an overall percentage and it is not split per language. For these packages, i18n.debian.net should provide a link with the translation statistics for each package http://i18n.debian.net/something/source package This page could provide a more visible status. Bug#537389: binutils 2.19.51.20090714-1 produces non-bootable kernel
Package: binutils Version: 2.19.51.20090714-1 There were no error messages or anything from the kernel; just the spontaneous reboot or hang. No configuration kernel configuration changes either; the only difference in a working test case and a non-working test case was building with different versions of binutils. There's nothing special about the PC that had the problem booting the kernel. It's an old machine that has never had problems with Linux. I can confirm that. I had to downgrade binutils to build a working 2.6.30.2 (or 2.6.30.1). In LKML other people also tracked down non-booting 2.6.30.x to be caused by the actual binutils package in sid. Again, As said a few lines later that is the problem of root. Alowing user names that are easily mistypes of root compromises the heuristic. Don't do that. One can only do so much. you're leaking user name information and leaving the system open to a (slightly more limited) User Enumeration attack. Which you do in any case. 2). You prevent the packet sniffer from having an opportunity to sniff the packet by refusing the connection. While this satisfies Nicholas' requirement, it fails on Human Factors because users tend to type their name and password in very quick succession. Which now results in the password being in the user name location in the sign on dialog. Well, usualy an unsecure line will be something like a telnet connection. In which case it would detect an attempt to log in as root and kill the connection. Even if the user enters the root password it would not be transmitted as there would be no password prompt. And typing your password too fast is bad in any case. If you start typiong it before the password prompt turns off echo it ends up on the console as clear text even for a local login. There is no guard against stupidity. If you are that paranoid then you should not have any insecure lines at all. So the whole point about preventing root logins on insecure lines becomes mood. I do not think those requirements can be satisfied at the same time. But near enough. Well ... I think what's being described is Security Through Obscurity. I'd still like to see a protection profile which requires the described behavior. As it stands, the alternatives all permit a User Enumeration attack of some form or another. -- Julie. I think preventing a root login on an insecure line from even asking for a password is a good idea. The exposure of the transmitted password is a far greater thread than exposing that the system will not allow root to login on the insecure line. Note that 99.999% of linux systems will have a root user so only 0.001% are hurt by exposing the fact. On the other hand
