Bug#516210: black screen after Lenny install
Package: xserver-xorg-video-radeonhd Version: 1.2.5-1 Severity: normal Same problem, additional info. My system broke on dist-upgrade from (what's now stable) to (what's now testing). Same breakage: all works except X. I had been using the proprietary ati driver. I've attached the original config (xorg.conf.ati), fwiw. The relevant portion of lspci is this: 02:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc RV535 [Radeon X1650 Series] (rev 9e) 02:00.1 Display controller: ATI Technologies Inc RV535 [Radeon X1650 Series] (rev 9e) Running Xorg -config generates a very generic config that doesn't seem to have noticed my particular hardware. Running X using that config (xorg.conf.new, attached) fails and returns me to the tty. Running X using a hand-crafted xorg.conf (attached) based on the old xorg.conf blanks screens, the screens claim no signal, and I have to ssh into the box to reboot. On ssh'ing in, it appears that there is no X-related process running, the screens just have no signal. At console, though, alt-F* and ctrl-alt-F* don't switch me back to a tty. Ctrl-alt-(bs|del) does not reboot, either. The old proprietary drivers that worked in stable stopped working on the upgrade, which is why I thought to try the radeonhd driver. I'd be very happy to get dual screen 1920 x 1200 back but with open source, but I'm not sure what to try next. Pointers appreciated. Bug#556929: kernel-package now severely broken
On Friday 20 November 2009 08:15:34 sriva...@acm.org wrote: This is not really a critical bug. It is only triggered when the user asks for a XEN dom0 image, and is using grub2, and has not told grub2 to ignore vmlinux. In any case, 12.030 will not ship vmlinux unless asked. I think there is a mismatch between our expectations; I expect people compiling kernels to be aware of their configuration, and to have set the configuration according to their desires. In this case, a dom0 image is being asked for; and you are hitting a flux in kernel-package's treatment of XEN images. This is not encountered with the standard (that is, make defconfig) configurations. I repeat, I am not doing anything non-standard: $ cp /boot/config-2.6.31-1-amd64 .config $ make-kpkg --initrd --revision=custom.1.2 kernel_image *I* did not ask for XEN, this is part of the debian stock kernel image configuration. *I* did not instruct grub2 not to ignore vmlinux, my grub2 configuration was installed as standard. Until the recent change, I had never seen vmlinux, and therefore there was no problem. Why was the decision made to now produce this? Also, I can find no mention of make defconfig in /usr/share/doc/kernel-package/README.gz so please do not moralize me and recognize that there IS a bug! Bug#502889: docbook support unmaintained upstream
On Wed, Nov 04, 2009 at 12:12:20AM +0100, Frank Lin PIAT wrote: I proposed an improved patch based on Stefano's one, to upstream developers (see upstream's bug report). Upstream considered it quite intrusive and assuming that: 1. the rendering will be completely refactored in moinmoin 2.0 (the next version), which will be based on ElementTree. 2. the patch against moin 1.9 to drop python-xml dependency was quite intrusive (and it still had a few important bugs). Upstream developer isn't interested in such bug. I am personally skeptical, and I doubt it is worth to effort to carry this heavy patch ourselves. There would be three alternatives: 1. drop docbook feature. 2. embed a copy of python-xml in moin package. 3. keep using the current python-xml which has almost no bugs. I Frank Lin, maintainer, and *, I've met Thomas Waldmann (which I'm adding to the CC list) at the GSoC mentor summit a couple of weeks ago. Of course, I took the chance of discussing with him this specific issue. The bottom line is that currently (and since a while now) docbook support in moin is unmaintained upstream. Thomas is looking for some helping hands for maintaining that code. Hence, the issue is not as easy as solving this specific issue that would allow us to get rid of the old python-xml in Debian, it really is: either we find someone stepping in as the maintainer of that code, or we will be stuck with a fairly large unmaintained code base that people bug us about. My patch was just a first attempt to get rid of python-xml, but is nowhere production ready due to various Unicode encoding problems (I haven't checked whether Frank Lin's updates fix that or not). If the issue stay as it is, my favorite scenario would be (1) (drop docbook support). Hope this helps, Cheers. -- Stefano Zacchiroli -o- PhD in Computer Science \ PostDoc @ Univ. Bug#502889: docbook support unmaintained upstream
Moin, I proposed an improved patch based on Stefano's one, to upstream developers (see upstream's bug report). Well, of course we ARE interested in bug fixes and improvements, we should just make sure there is no regression due to it. But, as I personally don't use docbook (and I also don't know of any currently active moin developer who does), I can't help much with regression testing or docbook/xml development. There would be three alternatives: 1. drop docbook feature. 2. embed a copy of python-xml in moin package. 3. keep using the current python-xml which has almost no bugs. 1 - will automatically happen at moin 2.0 if noone ports docbook stuff from 1.9 to 2.0 (and maintains it in 2.0). 2 - likely possible, we have quite some stuff in MoinMoin/support/ anyway. 3 - least work The bottom line is that currently (and since a while now) docbook support in moin is unmaintained upstream. Thomas is looking for some helping hands for maintaining that code. We get requests from docbook users from time to time. But everyone wants just to have and use, but not maintain it. :| If the issue stay as it is, my favorite scenario would be (1) (drop docbook support). For 1.9, that would be rather unexpected (and for some moin docbook users quite disruptive). For 2.0, it would be just natural, because the old code wouldn't work without maintenance/rewrite anyway. Bug#553458: Rsync patch to support ionice settings
FYI, the package dlocate already has support for the same feature. Each transmission carries a station's callsign, Maidenhead grid locator, and transmitter power in dBm. The program can decode signals with S/N as low as -28 dB in a 2500 Hz bandwidth. Stations with internet access can automatically upload their reception reports to a central database called WSPRnet, which includes a mapping facility. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-dist-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Thanks, fixed in the svn repository. Next release will contain the fix. Great! Thank you for your work. And thanks for testing. May I ask how the upgrade other then that did work out? The upgrade was not particularly smooth. Some packages did not want to configure from the first time, complaining that tex-common, texlive-common and texlive-binaries were not installed completely. But after two or three runs with aptitude, the installation was complete. You don't have logs available, do you? I would help testing the upgrade process if needed, from a fresh bootstraped sid. But installing a huge number of packages from experimental without pulling 'all' experimental packages was always a bit tricky for me. I see. However, we already *have* tested the upgrade from a fresh sid, albeit with nothing on it except the old TeXLive. I guess some related packages are needed to trigger the problems. Is it possible to get these texlive2009 packages from another source, for which I could write a simple pinning rule? http://people.debian.org/~preining/TeX/ tl2009/ but there are only amd64 binaries. Bug#557215: open-vm-tools: dependency on libgtk2 and libpango
Package: open-vm-tools Version: 2009.10.15-201664-1 Severity: normal Hi, open-vm-tool depends on libgtk2 which pulls in a lot of other dependencies. Many virtualised servers run headless, where these packages would not be required otherwise. This is a real problem in Lenny, as the version there is too old for ESXi 4.0. If it weren't for libgtk2, one could easily install the version from testing. But currently this would install 21 additional packages from testing and upgrade 7 others (including libc6). I had a quick look at the package and it seems that only libresolutionSet.so depends on libgtk2/libpango. Maybe this part could be split out in an extra package? Then it would be possible to install open-vm-tools on a head-less server without unneeded dependencies and install the testing version in stable without even the need to backport. Bug#557223: Asterisk chan_sip eats up sockets
Package: asterisk Version: 1:1.6.2.0~dfsg~rc1-1 Hello, with this version of asterisk, the chan_sip modules does not free rtp sockets anymore under certain cirumstances. I have not been able to trigger this behaviour on purpose, however. When this version runs for a while (a few days) and handles a few dozen calls, the whole rtp socket range is used up not still held open by asterisk, although all calls have ended. In this state, it does not accept new sip calls, neither incoming nor outgoing. Bye, Joerg signature.asc Description: Digital signature

Bug#557222: ecs is in main but depends on the non-free libparmetis
Since you uploaded the packages with arch=i386 and it has been automatically rebuilt on all the other arches, I suspect that the malign dependency on i386 has slipped in by accidently building against a local copy of this library on your personal computer. To avoid this in future uploads, maybe instead of commenting out the B-D on libparmetis-dev you should turn it into a Build-Conflicts. Also, the commented out work-around in debian/rules won't work even if uncommented, because the line break isn't escaped after the first line. And, while we are at it, the use of `pwd` in debian/rules is discouraged, please use $(CURDIR) instead (see http://lintian.debian.org/tags/debian-rules-uses-pwd.html). And in debian/control the Depends line for the binary package has a trailing comma. That's all for now. ;) Thanks, Fabian -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-dist-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Contact listmas...@lists.debian.org

Bug#557226: openoffice.org-writer: loses focus on entering a line with number/bullet
Package: openoffice.org-writer Version: 1:3.1.1-2 Hi, When I'm moving with my cursor in the text and come to a line that has a number or bullet on it, it shows the dialog with as title bullets and numbering which shows some options related to them. The problem is that at that moment openoffice loses the focus and I can't continue to type or scoll in the document with the cursor key. I need to make it the current application in focus again to be able to continue. The same thing happens with the mouse. If the cursor is on a line without bullet/numbers and you click on a line with them, it will also lose it's focus. If you do this when when it wasn't in focus it gets focus for a moment and than loses it again. Both caes can be very confusing, acting like you didn't click. Note that it doesn't happen if you change from a line with number/bullet to an other line with them. Bug#556929: kernel-package now severely broken
I repeat, I am not doing anything non-standard: $ cp /boot/config-2.6.31-1-amd64 .config $ make-kpkg --initrd --revision=custom.1.2 kernel_image That's [retty non-standard for a custom kernel. You are using a distro kitchen sync config for making a custom kernel; and kernel-package is mostly geared for individuals. *I* did not ask for XEN, this is part of the debian stock kernel image configuration. Yes, you did, by using that config file. *I* did not instruct grub2 not to ignore vmlinux, my grub2 configuration was installed as standard. And you fed it a non-standard image, which had vmlinux in it. kernel-package is not geared for people cargo culting. Until the recent change, I had never seen vmlinux, and therefore there was no problem. Why was the decision made to now produce this? This is part of the effort to make kernel-package friendlier to XEN, and as Xen moves closer to inclusion in mainline. Also, the usage conventions for XEN are changing, and k-p has to be made to adapt to it. Also, I can find no mention of make defconfig in /usr/share/doc/kernel-package/README.gz kernel-package does not say _anything_ about how you get your .configs. The defconfig is documented in upstream kernel documentation. so please do not moralize me and recognize that there IS a bug! I do not think there is a bug anymore, anyway. You are using unstable, there is a reason it is called the bleeding edge. Behaviour changes, and it sometimes takes a few days for things to stabilize. manoj -- Manoj Srivastava sriva...@acm.org 1024D/BF24424C print 4966 F272 D093 B493 410B 924B 21BA DABB BF24 424C -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-dist-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#511555: VDPAU headers packaging obsoleted by libvdpau release
The headers packaging being discussed in this bug is now obsolete. nVidia have released a DFSG-free vdpau adaption library, which is being packaged by the pkg-multimedia team, packaging ITP is being tracked in #549626. So I'd suggest either closing this bug, or maybe merging it with that one. -- Paul TBBle Hampson, paul.hamp...@pobox.com Shorter .sig for a more eco-friendly paperless office. pgpKLhdZV560n.pgp Description: PGP signature

At least we are convinced it's eglibc 2.10.1, not 100% sure it is due to NPTL. I have done some more tests, showing it's a bit more complicated than that. apt-get from stable/testing/unstable: - works with libstdc++6 built against eglibc 2.9 - segfaults with libstdc++6 built against eglibc 2.10.1 Then I tried to rebuild apt against the broken libstdc++6. Surprisingly this new apt-get: - works with libstdc++6 built against eglibc 2.10.1 - segfaults with libstdc++6 built against eglibc 2.9 So in short, it seems that using eglibc 2.10.1 to build libstdc++6 triggers an ABI change on this library. Currently /dev/fw* are owned by user and group root and permissions set to 660 so a normal user can not access them. Maybe there should be a group for firewire users so that they can use firewire cameras. I set the firewire currently with the following udev rules: KERNEL==raw1394, GROUP=firewire,MODE=0660 KERNEL==dv1394*, GROUP=firewire,MODE=0660 KERNEL==video1394*, GROUP=firewire,MODE=0660 KERNEL==fw*, GROUP=firewire,MODE=0660 But maybe that is not the optimal solution. Bug#557227: Tellico doesn't preserve loans and advance filters
On Friday 20 November 2009, you wrote: Package: tellico Version: 2.1-1 Severity: normal The newest version do not save/preserve the loans and advance searches over restart. The older version (some weeks ago) did work well, however I did not found _where_ the information was saved to (Maybe the new version destroy that information). It's fixed in version 2.1.1 which should be out this weekend. Robby -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-dist-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Bug#552560: #552560 Should off all possible locales when language_country does not fit an existing locale
In localechooser 2.18 an improved solution has been implemented. A new dialog is displayed (at hight priority) when the user selects a combination of language and country for which no locale is defined and there exist multiple UTF-8 locales for the language. The new dialog is identical to the country shortlist for the language, but with an added second column showing the locale that will be used. Bug#557235: postfix-policyd logs everything with syslog priority LOG_MAIL | LOG_INFO
Package: postfix-policyd Version: 1.80-2.3 Severity: normal postfix-policyd logs everything to syslog with priority LOG_MAIL | LOG_INFO by default. Although this can be changed, it then just logs everything with the new priority (including serious errors) - such that messages like this: mysql_real_connect(): Access denied for user 'postfix-policyd'@'localhost' (using password: YES) get logged in /var/log/mail.log along with informational messages like this: rcpt=242, greylist=update, host=..., from=..., to=... If you have automated systems in use to alert administrators of mail errors, then this is obviously of little use...
