Bug#584836: libgnupg-interface-perl: upstream version 0.42_02 is available

Upstream has released 0.42_02, with a number of patches to the issues
i've been reporting recently. It would be nice to have those fixes
 incorporated into debian.

I know that the _02 suffix denotes a developer release, but it
includes a bunch of features and bugfixes that are important.

If you feel the new version is too unstable for debian, would you be
up for an experimental upload at least?

Or, I could prepare an experimental upload myself, if you'd prefer.
Please let me know what you think is the best next step here.

Thanks for maintaining GnuPG::Interface in debian!

Yes I would prefer to upload it to experimental. I can prepare it. I
do not know if the version is to unstable, but I think an upload to
experimental for this development release would be fine.

Bug#584852: scim-bridge sets wrong $QT_IM_MODULE

2010-06-07 Thread Michael Tsang
Package: scim-bridge
Severity: normal

The file /etc/X11/xinit/xinput.d/scim-bridge on line 13 detects the QT3
version of im-scim-bridge.so only in order to set $QT_IM_MODULE. If the
system is QT4-only, it sets $QT_IM_MODULE to xim instead of scim-bridge.
This affect the usability of scim-bridge.

2010-06-07 Thread jidanni
Package: ndiswrapper-common

/etc/ndiswrapper and the stuff in it is never cleaned up upon purge.
It is like we did aptitude remove instead of aptitude purge.
One attempts a clean purge but those modules we built remain there to
haunt us, and swing right back into action next install, unless we clean
them out by hand. No matter how much we purge the ndis* packages, the
residue remains.

Yes, which libc6 packages are actually installed? I have fixed a bug
that my cause the problem you are observing in version 2.11.1-2, so if
you are running version 2.11.1-1, please try to upgrade.

Also which kernel are you running?
 libc is 2.11.1-2

I known the problem with libc6-i686 and intel i7 I've reported some info too

It's not the problem with core i7, but a different one that has also

Unfortunately I am not able to reproduce it. Tried on an Athlon and on

For your information, I have been able to find a machine with a CPU

Bug#584831: [buildd-tools-devel] Bug#584831: schroot: please add an option to avoid fork()

2010-06-07 Thread Timo Lindfors
Roger Leigh rle...@codelibre.net writes:
What command are you using to run gdm?

gdm is started by init normally. I am only running Xorg from the chroot.

What are you using for command= ?

/etc/gdm/gdm.conf has

[server-Standard]
command=/usr/local/bin/sid-X

where /usr/local/bin/sid-X contains

#!/bin/sh
/usr/bin/schroot -c sid2 -p -q -- /usr/bin/X $@

and is executable.

schroot -c lenny -u root gdm

I'm sorry if I was unclear but this is not what I intended to do. If I
run gdm from chroot then also window managers and things like that will
get started from the chroot? I only want to run Xorg itself from
unstable to keep my system otherwise as stable as possible :-)

schroot runs by creating, using and removing sessions. The reason for
forking is so that the user command/shell runs in the child and the
parent waits for it to complete so that it can clean up after.
If the fork is removed, then schroot is no longer running and cleanup
will not occur. I'm open to suggetions for how to change things, but
this is at the moment fundamentally incompatible with the architecture
 of schroot.

Yes I am aware of that. However, I am only suggesting this as an extra
option, is cleanup always necessary? I am not using run-*-scripts in
schroot.conf. With

[sid2]
description=Debian sid2 (unstable)
location=/local/chroot/sid2
aliases=unstable2
users=root,lindi

running the command

strace -o s -s4096 -f sid2 date

as root does not seem to do any real cleanup, it only sends a line to
syslog:

5685  ... waitpid resumed [{WIFEXITED(s)  WEXITSTATUS(s) == 0}], 0) = 5686

5684 read(255, ..., 40) = 0
5684 exit_group(0) = ?

I'm also unsure /why/ it's having any effect. I can understand the
daemon running in the chroot forking being a problem; schroot forking
internally shouldn't be interfering with anything--it's just a detail
and shell job control etc. shouldn't be affected. Some more details
about what exactly the problem is and why this change corrects that
 would be appreciated.

I managed to reproduce the problem on my desktop system. Xorg is started

/usr/bin/schroot -c sid2 -p -q -- /usr/bin/X :0 -auth /var/lib/gdm/:0.Xauth
-nolisten tcp vt8
 \_ /usr/bin/X :0 -auth /var/lib/gdm/:0.Xauth -nolisten tcp vt8

just fine but after about 10 seconds gdm starts to complain:

/usr/sbin/gdm
 \_ /usr/sbin/gdm
 \_ /usr/lib/gdm/gdmopen -l /bin/sh -c /usr/bin/whiptail --yesno 'There
already appears to be an X s
\_ /usr/bin/whiptail --yesno There already appears to be an X server
running on display :0. Sh

I do not know how exactly gdm detects the extra fork. xdm seems to work
with schroot so gdm is definitely doing some extra checks here.

Regarding the above patch, this actually runs the command twice, the
second time with the usual fork, so isn't usable in this form.

Yes the patch was just a rudimentary proof of concept.

Backport bug reports are fine in the normal bug tracker.

Great!

best regards,
Timo Lindfors

I've been looking into this, but I don't think there's any issue with the

Ok, then I'm reassigning the bug to my package.

Finally, according to the jpf.properties file distributed with jpf, all of the
parameters in the file are optional.

Therefore, unless osmosis needs to override the default settings distributed
with JPF, the Debian-distributed jar should function as desired. Going back
 to
the original bug report, it's natural for log4j to emit warnings when it is
initialized and no log4j.properties is present, so I don't believe there is a
bug related to that. Would it be possible for osmosis to include a
 log4j.properties file?

Ok, I probably made some confusion while tracing this bug. Sorry for
bothering you with non-issues. :-(

This FTBFS is caused by the following change:

|2009-11-20 Jakub Jelinekja...@redhat.com
|
|PR libc/10103
|
|* math/math.h: Provide *l long double prototypes redirecting
|to double functions even when __NO_LONG_DOUBLE_MATH and not
|__LDBL_COMPAT.
|* math/complex.h: Likewise.

These functions were present before in the library, but not exported
in the headers. This has been changed as it is required by ISO C99.

GCC tries to find these functions in the GLIBC by compiling a program,
so it was failing before, and is successful now. When they are already
present in the GLIBC it does not re-export them.

Strangely this should also affect ARM, but it seems to build correctly.
I haven't investigated why.

While these functions are strictly not needed in libstdc++6 anymore, we
have two options:
- revert the GLIBC change, which means we break the C99 compatibility
   (as before)
- patch GCC to export these functions anyway.

What's your opinion?

For ARM I did choose the second option, but didn't get any feedback about it.
So maybe it's time to ask the mips and arm porters?

The patch applied for armel is:

Bug#581554: Firmware

2010-06-07 Thread jt
I am having this problem too. I am trying to get wireless to work on
a Samsung N220. I am using 64bit Squeeze with a 2.6.32 kernel with
the RTL8192E staging driver compiled in. I have tried all the
firmware versions I can find and none of them work. The latest
version that I can find is rtl8192e_linux_2.6.0014. According to the
release note for this firmware it is for “Kernel version =
2.6.28/2.6.30/2.6.31”, i.e. not 2.6.32. As far as I can tell in fact
the actual firmware in all versions up to now is identical. I have
tried emailing Realtek for drivers but I have had no response.

2010/6/7 Fabricio Rocha rocha_fabri...@yahoo.com.br

Same happened here and I spent some hours to get to an X screen again. My
USB external CD-RW drive can't be seen by any CD writer software (another
bug), and after some googling I tried to ensure that hal and udev were
working. In the Gnome's Services dialog, udev and udev-mtab appear UNticked
(but ps aux | grep udev shows udevd --daemon three times for the root
 user).

Ticking the udev checkbox caused gdm to lock miserably in the following
boot. The USB mouse could get live again after being disconnected and
reconnected, but the keyboard would not work by any means. With the mouse
working again, I could choose to suspend the computer, then right after
waking it up (which does not bring the X screen automatically, but a
blinking cursor instead -- would this be another bug?) I could do Alt+F1 and
edit gdm.conf for enabling autologin; so I could go have Gnome's Services
dialog again for unticking the udev checkbox.

If this info could be helpful, I use kernel 2.6.32.4 customized for the
Acer Aspire One; udev 154-1; gconf2 2.28.1-3 and lots of Gnome 2.30 parts
 from unstable.

 Regards and good luck!

Fix debian/rules to explicitly invoke bash for running configure (see
   BTS #582874).

Is forcing bash the best solution to this problem?

I figured it was, as it was one of the suggested solutions mentioned in
the bug report. But other reporters apparently mentioned that export
CONFIG_SHELL=/bin/bash worked better for them. As for whether export
-n in that autoconf script is actually needed I'm not certain -- please
look into it, that part is from you. :)

 Point taken.

I'm surprised that if fails given that the line in question is

 export -n CFLAGS || true

Hi,

I propose the following patch as a solution to this problem:

unset CFLAGS in a dash-friendly way

According to the dash man page, the only way to unexport a variable
is to unset it. This also works in bash.

For the record, the reason that CFLAGS is exported from the environment to
configure and configure appends -Werror to the CFLAGS then it will be
re-exported by configure and has been observed to cause trouble when
configure runs a separate configure is the libltdl directory.

Bug#584857: /usr/bin/tightvncserver: image selections are partially black

2010-06-07 Thread giacomo boffi
Package: tightvncserver
Version: 1.3.9-6.1
Severity: normal
File: /usr/bin/tightvncserver

i use tightvncserver -depth 16 -geometry 1024x768 on my office debian system
and then i connect from home using a vnc client from an old ibook

yesterday, using djview4, that permits to save a selection done with
the middle mouse button either to the clipboard or to a graphic file,
i noticed that when the area i select is large part of the selection
is black filled, as i tried to express in the ascii art below

--- ---
- o - -XXXo -
-ooo o o- -XXX ooo o o-
- o o o - -- -XXXo o o -
- o o- -XXX o-
- o - -XXX -
-o- -X-
--- ---

this behaviour is noticed in both cases, save to clipboard and save to
file, and for all the graphic formats i tested

today i was going to report a bug against djview4, when i tried again
the procedure on the local display and everything was fine

is this a bug of tightvncserver? should this be a documented
restriction of the software, please be indulgent...

ciao, thank you for all

 Hi!

Hi

Attached is a patch for debian/rules that reduces the optimization level
to 1 for mipsel and mips, which fixes the problem at least on mipsel.
(tested, not tested on mips). I would be nice if you could upload rdflib
 with this patch soon.

Thanks.

RDFLib 3.0.0 was recently released. Thus, before uploading a patched
debian/rules, I'd like to test whether this issue is reproducible with
the new version as well. I'm preparing a package, it would be great if
you could test it on your mipsel virtual machine. Give me some time,
you will have it in your inbox shortly.

Anyway, this is obviously a workaround and, as you pointed out before,
we need to generate a minimal test case to report a bug
against gcc.

Bug#583902: dpkg: Please support filtering files

2010-06-07 Thread Martin Pitt
Hello Guillem,

Guillem Jover [2010-06-03 13:06 +0200]:
Perfect then, thanks, if eveyrthing else is fine, it's good to go, I'll
 be applying it later today.

Thanks, I saw that it landed now.

I updated the test cases to now test for the actually installed files,
to match the behaviour of the patch now. dpgk -L is now only checked
for the all files installed case, and considered an implementation
detail for the filtering cases. Updated patch attached.

Unfortunately the upgrade test case fails. It seems that in your
version of the patch files do not get filtered on upgrade, but stay
installed. I'll try to have a look, but since you are more familiar
with the recent modifications, do you have an immediate idea why that
happens?

Thanks,

Martin

Please see following thread for more details:

notification-daemon seems to be auto-registering itself to dbus.

Bug#558814: virtaal: Virtaal breaks Xliff inner markup translation

2010-06-07 Thread Pierre M.
Package: virtaal
Version: 0.5.2-1
Severity: normal

The problem I've submitted about virtaal is about breaking xliff g or x
inline markup tags. Virtaal doesn't protect this inline markup. Hence the
translated document can't be rebuild from the xliff skeleton and the xliff file
written by Virtaal. This renders Virtaal unusable as an xliff v1.2 compatible
editor.

hope this helps.

If so, I'll link this Debian ticket to that Darcs one.

I'm thinking the gzcrc check feature might be responsible for this,
because subjectively, the gzcrc warnings started to appear at the
same time. I'm assuming some darcs update introduced this.

I think this is an unrelated new feature.

Package: kdebase-workspace-data
Version: 4:4.4.3-1
Severity: serious
User: debian-...@lists.debian.org
UserTags: debian-edu

When trying to upgrade KDE from Lenny to Squeeze, the upgrade fail
because kdebase-workspace-data refuses to install because ksplash
version 4:3.9.5.dfsg.1-6+lenny1 is already installed and they share
the file /usr/share/icons/hicolor/128x1128/apps/ksplash.png.

I guess some kind of breaks/conflicts/replaces should be used here to
ensure upgrades go smooth.

Setting severity to serious, as this issue breaks upgrades and policy
state that packages providing the same file need to conflict with each
other.

Happy hacking,

Bug#584327: patch

2010-06-07 Thread Willi Mann
Hi!

Yes, of course.

Anyway, this is obviously a workaround and, as you pointed out before,
we need to generate a minimal test case to report a bug
 against gcc.

The problem is that it seems impossible to really make a short test
case. The parser contains many if-blocks with the condition
if(self-verbose). I removed them because self-verbose is always false
in our case. The bug no longer occurred. Then I did a binary search on
the number of blocks I can remove before the bug disappears. I now have
two versions of the parser that only differ in two lines, but one
exposing the problem, the other not.

My guess is that there is some wrong overflow detection in gcc when
relative addressing is used (that would explain why it only occurs on
long functions). However, I need to further investigate this, and even
if I can find the root of the problem, it will take some time that a fix
is made and included in Debian's toolchain.

I already asked this on IRC and basically understood that the
functionality would be nice but is not currently easy to
implement. Please correct me if I misunderstood your reply (I prefer
not to quote other people's IRC messages publicly without permission
so I'm only quoting mine):

 lindi- Zugschlus: my /etc/policy-rc.d lookups
/etc/policy-{white,black}list.conf and logs decisions to syslog. this
works very nicely thanks to policyrcd-script-zg2. can you suggest a
way to make this also work for services that are started during boot?

lindi- Zugschlus: I see two options 1) divert update-rc.d with my
own version that will not add start links for blacklisted services 2)
modify /etc/init.d/rcS to use invoke-rc.d

If the feature is desiderable then I think we should have a bug to
track it. However, I am not sure if policyrcd-script-zg2 is the right
package so feel free to reassign as you see fit.

Maybe /etc/init.d/rc could be modified to use invoke-rc? Or maybe
policyrcd-script-zg2 could provide some additional hooks?

Bug#584868: passwd: userdel removes the group with the same name as 'username'

2010-06-07 Thread Teodor
Package: passwd
Version: 1:4.1.4.2-1
Severity: important
Tags: sid lenny

Hi,

I've removed the 'staff' username and the group 'staff' was also removed. This
has
happened on a Lenny system, on a 'sid/testing' system the group was not removed
due to this reason:
| r...@frost:~# tail /etc/passwd
| [..]
| staff:x:1002:1001:Company staff:/home/staff:/bin/bash
| customer:x:1003:1001:Company customers:/home/customer:/bin/bash
| r...@frost:~# userdel -r staff
| userdel: group staff is the primary group of another user and is not removed.
| r...@frost:~# userdel -r customer

Still, both 'staff' and 'customer' were having the group 'partners' which was
not
removed after were executions:
| r...@frost:~# getent group partners
| partners:x:1001:

I'm marking this bug with severity important, but it could be 'critical' due to
the
fact that a custom username with the same name as a system group could cause the
system group deletion and thus break the system.

Thanks

Bug#584870: kdm: flag indicating keyboard layout not present anymore in 4.4.3-1

2010-06-07 Thread Klaus Ade Johnstad
Package: kdm
Version: 4:4.4.3-1
Severity: normal

My users regulalry switch between several keyboard language layouts during the
workday. In version 4:4.3.4-5+b1 there was a flag present in the kdm
open locked screen-dialog indicating the keyboard layout, which you could
press in order to change the layout, that flag is not there anymore in 4.4.3-1.

This has led some of my users to not being able to open up their locked
screens, because they do not remember what keyboard layouyt they had before
going off to lunch.

Bug#582238: libebml: New upstream release 0.8.0

New libebml released are ABI-incompatible with previous releases and
thus trigger another library transition. We are most probably not
going to upload before Squeeze.

Please follow the upstream discussion at

Hi,

Please package this version.

Christian

I have imported libebml into the team's git on alioth and merged the new
upstream. I'm new to library packaging, but will solicit assistance from
other team members to make this happen.

As now 0.9.0 has been released it is possible to have this package in
unstable ?

Bug#584750: kaffeine: Crashes when trying to play DVD

2010-06-07 Thread Christoph Pfister
2010/6/6 Johannes Graumann johannes_graum...@web.de:
 Package: kaffeine
 Version: 1.0-1
 Severity: important

When tryong to play a DVD, the responsible part of kaffeine crashes with the
 error
        KCrash: Application 'kaffeine-xbu' crashing...
        sock_file=/home/balin/.kde/socket-osgiliath/kdeinit4__0

Backtrace? (but I can almost guarantee that the crash happens within xine-lib)

Xine plays the dvd on the same machine.

There are two ways for setting the dvd drive. Apparently xine-lib
doesn't like the way I've chosen in your environment.

There used to be a problem with drive selection in a prior version (manually
changing the drive identification fixed it), however this version does no
 longer
allow access to the drive configuration via the GUI!?

The devices are auto-detected (using solid / HAL; if you want to play
a dvd kaffeine looks for a device containing a dvd and passes this
device to xine).

snip

Bug#584862: Running scripts in rcS.d/ took [negative two thousand+] seconds.

2010-06-07 Thread Petter Reinholdtsen
[Dan Jacobson]
 We see
Running scripts in rcS.d/ took -2 seconds.
The exact number I did not copy down, it was like
 $ perl -wle 'print 2**14+2**13+2**12'
 28672
but negative. The correct number should be about three seconds.

Hehe. Is it a really bad hardware clock on this machine?

The code get the time at the start and and the end and subtract it,
and if the internal clock is correct in this period, it report the
duration.

Happy hacking,

Bug#584874: openoffice.org-kde: F4 crashes calc

2010-06-07 Thread Tim Richardson
Package: openoffice.org-kde
Version: 1:3.2.1-1
Severity: normal

With Base and Calc installed, F4 crashes Calc when using the KDE integration
package.

f4 is supposed to browse registered databases.

removing openoffice.org-kde removes this problem.

This might be a dup of the other bug I reported on this package (closed)
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=570570
because I remember some discussion of this F4 bug. However, the upstream bug is
closed.
I'll check again.

Bug#584769: RFS: clustershell

2010-06-07 Thread Lucas Nussbaum
(Please Cc me on replies, I don't follow -mentors@ very closely).

First question: why do we need yet another parallel command execution
tool? Why is it better than pdsh, dsh, dish, fabric, capistrano,
taktuk+kanif, etc? I'm not arguing that it is not better, but we have so
many of those that it would make sense to elaborate a bit.

Please try again with epiphany 2.30. IIRC this has been fixed in the

There's a problem with your patches - they overlap. Also, they don't
compile (even after removing duplicate chunks, the value for PARSE_PARAM
happens to coincide with '\r' in a case statement).

It would help if you submitted a single patch, which works for you, so
that I can avoid overlooking pieces of the change.

Hi,

But now I installed backported release instead of source (to easy the
next dist-upgrades), now I installed console-setup and kbd to
deal with iso-8859-15 properly on every tty, these messages appear on
the standard output at every key I do (letter or function) on my
dipplay. Even if I do with ordinary keyboard I have such result. Screen
isn't readable anymore.

I precise that this bug only appears on a 32bits system, on amd64 only
messages appear in log (it's a problem, but less critical).

Thanks,

open locked screen-dialog indicating the keyboard layout, which you
could press in order to change the layout, that flag is not there anymore

This has led some of my users to not being able to open up their locked

 going off to lunch.

I'm not sure what this has to do with kdm. What's wrong with adding keyboard

Bug#584879: enscript: File conflict with octave3.0 (/usr/share/enscript/hl/octave.st)

2010-06-07 Thread Petter Reinholdtsen

Package: enscript
Version: 1.6.5.1-1
Severity: serious
User: debian-...@lists.debian.org
UserTags: debian-edu

When trying to upgrade a KDE desktop from Lenny to Squeeze, the
upgrade fail because enscript refuses to install because octave3
version 1:3.0.1-6lenny3 is already installed and they share the file
/usr/share/enscript/hl/octave.st.

I guess some kind of breaks/conflicts/replaces should be used here to
ensure upgrades go smooth.

Setting severity to serious, as this issue breaks upgrades and policy
state that packages providing the same file need to conflict with each
other.

Happy hacking,

Bug#584880: [lxr-cvs] proposal update to the documentation

2010-06-07 Thread Xavier Brochard
Package: lxr-cvs
Version: 0.9.5+cvs20071020-1
Severity: normal

--- Please enter the report below this line. ---
This is a proposal to update the README.Debian file regarding mainly the
postgresql setup.

Suggested changes are in Dependencies, Setup 1, Edit the lxr config and Build
the cross-reference.

I propose:
---

Dependencies
---
...
This packages need:
...
- swish-e package (not to be confused with swish++)

(I suggest to add this because lxr-cvs was not working for me until I add this
package, but I use lxr-cvs to browse Perl code, not Linux-src)

Setup
--
...
1) Set up the database.
...
  For Postgresql:

Create a Linux user account for lxr, named lxr.

Get a shell for the database superuser 'postgres'. If your system has an
active root user, use su:
   $ su -c su -s /bin/sh postgres
If your system uses sudo to get administrative rights, use sudo instead:
   $ sudo -u postgres sh
Add the previously created user account in Postgresql and give the user
permission to create databases:
createuser lxr
Create a database for lxr:
createdb -U lxr lxr
Add a web server account (unprivilege):
createuser www-data
Logout and login in the normal shell as lxr
Initialize the database:
 psql -U lxr lxr
  \i /usr/share/doc/lxr-cvs/examples/initdb-postgres
Just ignore the errors (if any) about unimplemented functions.

...

3) Edit the lxr configuration file. (/etc/lxr-cvs/lxr.conf)
...
You should check the location of swish-e index database files. The
directory should be writable for the lxr user:
 'swishdir' = '/var/lib/lxr-cvs/index/',

...
5) Build the cross-reference:
Open a shell for the lxr user and do:
genxref --url=http://localhost/lxr --allversions

---
end of suggests!

As I used lxr to browse a different source tree than the linux one, if you
think that a little documentation can help users, I can write it.

regards
xavier

update-dlocatedb updates the files listing only. it doesn't update the
package listing. this is not a bug, it's a feature - i use it to compare
the difference between what 'dlocate -l' says and what 'dpkg -l' says
after an upgrade, so i can easily get a diff of what has chanegd.

if you want to force dlocate to update the pkg listing as well as the
files listing, then run the cron script:

/etc/cron.daily/dlocate

this is the second or third time this question has come up, so i'll
leave this bug report in the BTS to remind me to re-do the way this
works. will change it to have three command line options:

-f, --files update files list only
-b, --both update both (will probably make this the default)

Bug#584881: Lockups under heavy disk IO; md (RAID) resync/check implicated

2010-06-07 Thread Ian Jackson
Package: linux-image-2.6.26-2-686-bigmem
Version: 2.6.26-21lenny4

I keep getting soft lockups; the symptoms appear to be that user
processes become deadlocked when they try to access the disk, but the
kernel doesn't notice that anything is wrong.

It appears that the lockups happen when:
 (a) my software (mdadm) RAID mirror is resyncing or checking
 (b) some other program does heavy disk IO

I'm currently trying to work around the problem by disabling the
system's backups (which are a prime trigger in category (b)) until the
post-crash mirror resync is complete, combined with setting the sysctl
dev.raid.speed_limit_max to 1000. Just disabling the backups wasn't
sufficient because, it seems, various recovery tasks in the most
recent crash are sufficient to trigger the bug.

I observe that the message from the md driver, and the presence of the
sysctls dev.raid.speed_limit_{min,max}, suggest that the md driver is
using a fundamentally incorrect algorithm which depends on guessing
the available IO bandwidth.

Actual hard data:

* chiark locked up at 0355 on the 2nd of May. It did so shortly after
the backups start. chiark's backups are done with LVM snapshots and
rsync. I don't any more have information about exactly at what
  stage the backups were at.

* chiark locked up again at 0355 on Sunday morning the 6th of June.
In this case I was able to see that the system had successfully
created and mounted the LVM snapshot as the rsync process on the
backup master system was still present.

* Note that both these two crashes happened on the 1st Sunday of the
month. Investigating the kernel logs for the 2nd crash show this:
Jun 6 00:57:01 chiark kernel: [3250794.079478] md: data-check of RAID
array md127
Jun 6 00:57:01 chiark kernel: [3250794.079479] md: minimum _guaranteed_
speed: 1000 KB/sec/disk.
Jun 6 00:57:01 chiark kernel: [3250794.079479] md: using maximum available
idle IO bandwidth (but not more than 20 KB/sec) for data-check.
Jun 6 00:57:01 chiark kernel: [3250794.079479] md: using 128k window, over
a total of 97980 blocks.
However there is no sign of it completing.

* Shortly after I power cycled the system to get it back up, it locked
up again. At that point, the RAID was doing a post-crash resync,
and the crash happened at the point where the backup master
attempted to start on the next partition.

* Some research dug up some reports of first-Sunday-of-the-month
crashes associated with RAID integrity checks.[1] So I tried setting
the max IO bandwidth sysctl to the lowest reasonable value (by hand)
and left the system running. However, it locked up again as the
  backups started.

* I power cycled the machine again and disabled the backups and made
sure they were truly stopped. However chiark locked up again mere
  minutes after coming back up.

* I have now power cycled chiark once more and this time I set the
max IO bandwidth sysctl. So far it seems to have stayed up for
  about half an hour.

If nothing more goes wrong I intend to leave the backups disabled
until the RAID finishes its resync, which we can expect to be some
time on Wednesday night.

chiark is running LVM-on-MD-on-LVM. So the two disks which form the
mirror which is resyncing are actually LVM LVs, and that mirror is
itself an LVM PV. The underlying hardware is a Dell R210 with two
WD SATA disks (WD7500AYPS-0).

[1] https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/212684
  seems relevant for example.

Bug#584882: devscripts: [build-rdeps] should offer a list-only output of packages, too

2010-06-07 Thread Axel Beckert
Package: devscripts
Version: 2.10.64
Severity: wishlist
File: /usr/bin/build-rdeps

build-rdeps currently outputs package list with a lot of additional
information around and blockwise. This isn't very suitable if you want
to pipe the list of reverse build dependencies into some other
commands or use it in a script.

I therefore suggest a new option, maybe -l/--list-only which outputs
e.g. package name and component (and maybe even more information) with
one package per line and no additional output. Examples how it could
look like:

$ build-rdeps -l -m lemon
netsurf main Debian/Ubuntu NetSurf Package Team d...@netsurf-browser.org

$ build-rdeps -l
netsurf main

$ build-rdeps -l --only-main
netsurf

(For now I use the script posted in http://bugs.debian.org/299228 for
this purpose.)

Bug#299228: reverse build depends would be really useful

2010-06-07 Thread Axel Beckert
Hi,

James Morrison wrote back in 2005:
 Package: apt-rdepends
 Severity: wishlist

Currently apt-redepends --reverse --build-depends FOO gives the following
 error:
E: Reverse build-dependencies are not supported

It would be great if this worked.

There is a script called build-rdeps in the package devscripts since
February 2008 which does that job.

Alec Berryman wrote back in 2006:
I also miss this feature in apt-rdepends and asked around today on
#debian-devel to see if there is an alternate solution. I was provided
 with the following shell function:

 apt-rbdepends () {
 grep-dctrl -F Build-Depends $1 -s Package
 /var/lib/apt/lists/*_Sources
 }

That function is even more handy if you add some | sort -u | awk '{print $2}'.
:-)

It especially offers something build-rdeps can't do (yet, see
http://bugs.debian.org/584882): Print just packages names so you use
awk, etc. to modify the list, etc.

I didn't see that this had been documented anywhere, and I figured that
 people might look here.

Was indeed a good idea!

I'll modify apt-rdepends so that it will either point to or call
build-rdeps and close this bug afterwards.

Regards, Axel

For your information, I have been able to find a machine with a CPU
identical to yours, and I am now able to reproduce the issue. I'll debug
 it later today.

Ok, here we go, it's a bit tricky.

First of all, newer versions of the glibc tries to optimise the string
function by using cache information, which are stored in cpuid level 2
and later on an Intel CPU.

Secondly, valgrind does not use the real CPU, but always emulates an
Intel one, trying to match the characteristics of the host CPU,
especially in term of instruction set. When the CPU has no SSE support
it emulates an old Pentium CPU, which have a max a cpuid level of 1.
This is what happens when the host CPU is an Athlon one.

The Pentium CPU is an i586 CPU, which does not support the CMOV
instruction, so the libc from the libc6 package is used. On the other
hand, the Athlon CPU is an i686 CPU, which does support the CMOV
instruction, so the libc from libc6-i686 is used.

Everything works well as long as you don't use valgrind. When you use
it, it loads all the libraries using the host CPUID, that is it loads
the libc from libc6-i686. It latter emulates a Pentium CPU, which has
a cpuid level of 1 only. The glibc code recognizes an Intel CPU (as
valgrind emulates it), and given it is the i686 version of the libc, it
assumes it is at minimum a Pentium Pro (which is the first i686 Intel
CPU), which means it assumes that the cpuid level is at 2. This is
where all the cache information is stored.

The bug really seems to be on the valgrind side, which should not load
an i686 library while emulating an i586 CPU. OTOH, if it is difficult
to fix, we can maybe remove assumptions that are correct, but wrong when
using valgrind.

Bug#584698: patch welcome

2010-06-07 Thread Thierry Randrianiriana
Hello,

You can improve php-elisp package via collab-maint :

http://svn.debian.org/wsvn/collab-maint/ext-maint/php-elisp/

I think that it's better if you co-maintain this package with me.
You're welcome!

Bug#582292: Confirmed here

2010-06-07 Thread zoltan herman
Hi,

I installed the actual releases (2010.06.06) and set the Hungarian keyboard
layout.
After restarting only the mouse worked well under X (Gnome).
The Num Lock LED light during the boot, but after it only in console mode
works well.

Greetings

The USB mouse could get live again after being disconnected and
reconnected, but the keyboard would not work by any means.

Same happened here and I spent some hours to get to an X
screen again. My USB external CD-RW drive can't be seen by any
CD writer software (another bug), and after some googling I
tried to ensure that hal and udev were working. In the Gnome's
Services dialog, udev and udev-mtab appear UNticked (but ps
aux | grep udev shows udevd --daemon three times for the
  root user).

OK so you guys broke your systems by doing administration tasks you
don’t understand, and then you see that X doesn’t work anymore.

 Sure.

But what can we do about that?

 Cheers,

Bug#584841: xterm: fastScroll rendering artifacts

 This bug appeared after xterm-257.

For that data, I can see an issue, which seems to be introduced with #257.

Working through my test-executables, the final screen doesn't show the
problem, but it shows up momentarily - same general effect.

Here is what I'm using for testing:

${PROG-xterm} -geom 80x60 -sl 1 -j -xrm '*fastScroll:true' -hold -e cat
/usr/share/dict/words

On my executables, the problem seems to show up first in 256j,
which were some limit-checks added for the scroll-lock feature.
I'll investigate, etc.

thanks

Bug#584690: [Pkg-sysvinit-devel] Bug#584690: killprocs: kills root filesystem failing to reboot

2010-06-07 Thread Michal Suchanek
Excerpts from Petter Reinholdtsen's message of Sun Jun 06 00:39:28 +0200 2010:
 [Michal Suchanek]
When the root filesystem requires a process to work and killprocs
kills that process the system ay fail to reboot because it is unable
  to read the reboot executable.

This is a bug in whatever provides the root file system. The sendsigs
script provide a mechanism for services to avoid having their process
killed by sendsigs during shutdown (the killprocs script is only used
in runlevel 1 and is unrelated to reboot).

Which package fail to register their daemons pid using the omitpid
feature in sendsigs? This issue should be reassigned to that package.

The mount is done by live-initramfs so I guess that's where the
issue is.

However, killprocs has no such exclusion mechanism afaict.

Is that intentional that going single user kills the processes that
should not ever be killed?

Thanks

Bug#584883: rss2email: feeds.dat corrupted

2010-06-07 Thread Reuben Thomas
Package: rss2email
Version: 1:2.62-3
Severity: normal

I run r2e from my crontab. This morning I discovered that it had
corrupted its feeds.dat (which I am not attaching, but am happy to
send the maintainer privately), and now gives this error to r2e run:

Traceback (most recent call last):

feeds, feedfileObject = load()
File /usr/share/rss2email/rss2email.py, line 418, in load
feeds = pickle.load(feedfileObject)
cPickle.BadPickleGet: 11

The output from cron the first time it failed said simply:

Job r2e run /dev/null 21 terminated (exit status: 1)

A manual check suggests that there have been no new items in my
subscribed feeds for at least a couple of days.

The machine running my crontab has been up for a while, so wasn't
reset recently in the middle of an r2e run, for example.

Let me know if I can provide any other information.

Bug#478293: #478293 xterm: scrollback: disable scroll to bottom on new output while Shift key remains depressed?

2010-06-07 Thread Thomas Dickey
This is addressed in the #257/etc changes to support scroll-lock.

Just a shift-key probably won't work well with key translations,
but since the new feature is implemented as an action, you could
experiment with it to see if Shift could be usable.

the new version as well. I'm preparing a package, it would be great if
you could test it on your mipsel virtual machine. Give me some time,
you will have it in your inbox shortly.

 Yes, of course.

The package is almost ready but we're in serious trouble now.

RDFLib 3.0.0 does not ship C extensions so this bug is not
reproducible any longer.

BUT we have a bigger problem now: support for graph querying using
SPARQL has been dropped. This means that your test case won't work
and, even worse, that enigmail installation (and maybe others) will
fail now on every architecture (*sigh*).

http://paste.debian.net/76438/

Look at this: http://code.google.com/p/rdflib/wiki/IntroSparql

In short, Rdfextras must be packaged for Debian if you want RDFLib to
dispatch SPARQL queries. Any volunteers?

I think this bug should be fixed before Squeeze, thus I am cc'ing KDEPIM

see this pretty annoying bug for one year at least until Debian Squeeze +1
 is out.

As noted in the upstream bug, this is hopefully fixed now, or at least
substantially improved.

I apt-get'ed the sources for kdepimlibs and copied the three modified files
from KDE 4.4 branch into it. Installting libakonadi-kde from the newly built
packages fixed the problem for me.

Further testing very welcome.

many of those that it would make sense to elaborate a bit.

Clustershell is a tool like dsh or pdsh but it also provides a python API.
It is used by lustre-shine[1] and it can also be used to script actions on a
cluster.

[1] lustre-shine (https://sourceforge.net/apps/trac/lustre-shine/) is a

I think this might be http://bugs.darcs.net/issue1746. Do you agree?
If so, I'll link this Debian ticket to that Darcs one.

Yes. The boring new files are in fact many object and archive
files, totaling several gigabytes. Reading those into memory
is not going to work.

As added information to that ticket, I don't think the
combined size of the boring files should be considered
improbably large. We compile for up to 8 configurations at
the same time (32/64 bit, position dependent and independent,
and with and without optimization), and with debug symbols
and all, gigabytes is not hard to reach.

In short, darcs should not assume the boring files are going
to fit into memory.

I'm thinking the gzcrc check feature might be responsible for this,
because subjectively, the gzcrc warnings started to appear at the
same time. I'm assuming some darcs update introduced this.

I think this is an unrelated new feature.

In view of the above, I gree.

Thanks. Vincent.
