Bug#584836: libgnupg-interface-perl: upstream version 0.42_02 is available
Hi Daniel! On Sun, Jun 06, 2010 at 09:40:42PM -0400, Daniel Kahn Gillmor wrote: Package: libgnupg-interface-perl Version: 0.42-1 Severity: normal Upstream has released 0.42_02, with a number of patches to the issues i've been reporting recently. It would be nice to have those fixes incorporated into debian. I know that the _02 suffix denotes a developer release, but it includes a bunch of features and bugfixes that are important. If you feel the new version is too unstable for debian, would you be up for an experimental upload at least? Or, I could prepare an experimental upload myself, if you'd prefer. Please let me know what you think is the best next step here. Thanks for maintaining GnuPG::Interface in debian! Yes I would prefer to upload it to experimental. I can prepare it. I do not know if the version is to unstable, but I think an upload to experimental for this development release would be fine. Bests Salvatore signature.asc Description: Digital signature

Bug#584831: [buildd-tools-devel] Bug#584831: schroot: please add an option to avoid fork()
Roger Leigh rle...@codelibre.net writes: What command are you using to run gdm? gdm is started by init normally. I am only running Xorg from the chroot. What are you using for command= ? /etc/gdm/gdm.conf has [server-Standard] command=/usr/local/bin/sid-X where /usr/local/bin/sid-X contains #!/bin/sh /usr/bin/schroot -c sid2 -p -q -- /usr/bin/X $@ and is executable. schroot -c lenny -u root gdm I'm sorry if I was unclear but this is not what I intended to do. If I run gdm from chroot then also window managers and things like that will get started from the chroot? I only want to run Xorg itself from unstable to keep my system otherwise as stable as possible :-) schroot runs by creating, using and removing sessions. The reason for forking is so that the user command/shell runs in the child and the parent waits for it to complete so that it can clean up after. If the fork is removed, then schroot is no longer running and cleanup will not occur. I'm open to suggetions for how to change things, but this is at the moment fundamentally incompatible with the architecture of schroot. Yes I am aware of that. However, I am only suggesting this as an extra option, is cleanup always necessary? I am not using run-*-scripts in schroot.conf. With [sid2] description=Debian sid2 (unstable) location=/local/chroot/sid2 aliases=unstable2 users=root, lindi running the command strace -o s -s4096 -f sid2 date as root does not seem to do any real cleanup, it only sends a line to syslog: 5685 ... waitpid resumed [{WIFEXITED(s) WEXITSTATUS(s) == 0}], 0) = 5686 5685 --- SIGCHLD (Child exited) @ 0 (0) --- 5685 getuid32()= 0 5685 time(NULL)= 1275892257 5685 stat64(/etc/localtime, {st_mode=S_IFREG|0644, st_size=1883, ...}) = 0 5685 send(4, 86Jun 7 09:30:57 schroot[5685]: pam_unix(schroot:session): session closed for user root..., 90, MSG_NOSIGNAL) = 90 5685 rt_sigaction(SIGTERM, {SIG_DFL}, NULL, 8) = 0 5685 rt_sigaction(SIGHUP, {SIG_DFL}, NULL, 8) = 0 5685 munmap(0xb6e9, 6100) = 0 5685 munmap(0xb6e13000, 100032)= 0 5685 munmap(0xb6e2c000, 101276)= 0 5685 munmap(0xb6de1000, 201052)= 0 5685 close(4) = 0 5685 close(3) = 0 5685 munmap(0xb7fde000, 4096) = 0 5685 exit_group(0) = ? 5684 ... waitpid resumed [{WIFEXITED(s) WEXITSTATUS(s) == 0}], 0) = 5685 5684 rt_sigprocmask(SIG_SETMASK, [], NULL, 8) = 0 5684 --- SIGCHLD (Child exited) @ 0 (0) --- 5684 waitpid(-1, 0xbff17dd8, WNOHANG) = -1 ECHILD (No child processes) 5684 sigreturn() = ? I'm also unsure /why/ it's having any effect. I can understand the daemon running in the chroot forking being a problem; schroot forking internally shouldn't be interfering with anything--it's just a detail and shell job control etc. shouldn't be affected. Some more details about what exactly the problem is and why this change corrects that would be appreciated. I managed to reproduce the problem on my desktop system. Xorg is started /usr/bin/schroot -c sid2 -p -q -- /usr/bin/X :0 -auth /var/lib/gdm/:0.Xauth -nolisten tcp vt8 \_ /usr/bin/X :0 -auth /var/lib/gdm/:0.Xauth -nolisten tcp vt8 just fine but after about 10 seconds gdm starts to complain: /usr/sbin/gdm \_ /usr/sbin/gdm \_ /usr/lib/gdm/gdmopen -l /bin/sh -c /usr/bin/whiptail --yesno 'There already appears to be an X s \_ /usr/bin/whiptail --yesno There already appears to be an X server running on display :0. Sh I do not know how exactly gdm detects the extra fork. xdm seems to work with schroot so gdm is definitely doing some extra checks here. Regarding the above patch, this actually runs the command twice, the second time with the usual fork, so isn't usable in this form. Yes the patch was just a rudimentary proof of concept. Backport bug reports are fine in the normal bug tracker. Great! best regards, Timo Lindfors -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-dist-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. These functions were present before in the library, but not exported in the headers. This has been changed as it is required by ISO C99. GCC tries to find these functions in the GLIBC by compiling a program, so it was failing before, and is successful now. When they are already present in the GLIBC it does not re-export them. Strangely this should also affect ARM, but it seems to build correctly. I haven't investigated why. While these functions are strictly not needed in libstdc++6 anymore, we have two options: - revert the GLIBC change, which means we break the C99 compatibility (as before) - patch GCC to export these functions anyway. What's your opinion? For ARM I did choose the second option, but didn't get any feedback about it. So maybe it's time to ask the mips and arm porters? My USB external CD-RW drive can't be seen by any CD writer software (another bug), and after some googling I tried to ensure that hal and udev were working. In the Gnome's Services dialog, udev and udev-mtab appear UNticked (but ps aux | grep udev shows udevd --daemon three times for the root user). Ticking the udev checkbox caused gdm to lock miserably in the following boot. The USB mouse could get live again after being disconnected and reconnected, but the keyboard would not work by any means. With the mouse working again, I could choose to suspend the computer, then right after waking it up (which does not bring the X screen automatically, but a blinking cursor instead -- would this be another bug?) I could do Alt+F1 and edit gdm.conf for enabling autologin; so I could go have Gnome's Services dialog again for unticking the udev checkbox. If this info could be helpful, I use kernel 2.6.32.4 customized for the Acer Aspire One; udev 154-1; gconf2 2.28.1-3 and lots of Gnome 2.30 parts from unstable. Regards and good luck! Is forcing bash the best solution to this problem? I figured it was, as it was one of the suggested solutions mentioned in the bug report. But other reporters apparently mentioned that export CONFIG_SHELL=/bin/bash worked better for them. As for whether export -n in that autoconf script is actually needed I'm not certain -- please look into it, that part is from you. :) Point taken. I'm surprised that if fails given that the line in question is export -n CFLAGS || true Hi, I propose the following patch as a solution to this problem: unset CFLAGS in a dash-friendly way According to the dash man page, the only way to unexport a variable is to unset it. This also works in bash. For the record, the reason that CFLAGS is exported from the environment to configure and configure appends -Werror to the CFLAGS then it will be re-exported by configure and has been observed to cause trouble when configure runs a separate configure is the libltdl directory. I would be nice if you could upload rdflib with this patch soon. Thanks. RDFLib 3.0.0 was recently released. Thus, before uploading a patched debian/rules, I'd like to test whether this issue is reproducible with the new version as well. I'm preparing a package, it would be great if you could test it on your mipsel virtual machine. Give me some time, you will have it in your inbox shortly. Anyway, this is obviously a workaround and, as you pointed out before, we need to generate a minimal test case to report a bug against gcc. I updated the test cases to now test for the actually installed files, to match the behaviour of the patch now. dpgk -L is now only checked for the all files installed case, and considered an implementation detail for the filtering cases. Bug#584327: patch
Hi! Yes, of course. Anyway, this is obviously a workaround and, as you pointed out before, we need to generate a minimal test case to report a bug against gcc. The problem is that it seems impossible to really make a short test case. The parser contains many if-blocks with the condition if(self-verbose). I removed them because self-verbose is always false in our case. The bug no longer occurred. Then I did a binary search on the number of blocks I can remove before the bug disappears. I now have two versions of the parser that only differ in two lines, but one exposing the problem, the other not. My guess is that there is some wrong overflow detection in gcc when relative addressing is used (that would explain why it only occurs on long functions). However, I need to further investigate this, and even if I can find the root of the problem, it will take some time that a fix is made and included in Debian's toolchain. This has led some of my users to not being able to open up their locked screens, because they do not remember what keyboard layouyt they had before going off to lunch. -- System Information: Debian Release: squeeze/sid APT prefers testing APT policy: (500, 'testing') Architecture: i386 (i686) Kernel: Linux 2.6.32-3-686 (SMP w/2 CPU cores) Locale: LANG=nn_NO.UTF-8, LC_CTYPE=nn_NO.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/dash Versions of packages kdm depends on: ii consolekit0.4.1-4framework for defining and trackin ii debconf [debconf-2.0] 1.5.32 Debian configuration management sy ii kdebase-runtime 4:4.4.3-1 runtime components from the offici ii kdebase-workspace-kgreet-plug 4:4.4.3-1 KDE greet libraries for authentica ii libc6 2.10.2-6 Embedded GNU C Library: Shared lib ii libck-connector0 0.4.1-4ConsoleKit libraries ii libdbus-1-3 1.2.24-1 simple interprocess messaging syst ii libkdecore5 4:4.4.3-2 the KDE Platform Core Library ii libkdeui5 4:4.4.3-2 the KDE Platform User Interface Li ii libkio5 4:4.4.3-2 the Network-enabled File Managemen ii libknewstuff2-4 4:4.4.3-2 the Get Hot New Stuff v2 Library ii libkworkspace44:4.4.3-1 library for the kdebase workspace ii libpam0g 1.1.1-3Pluggable Authentication Modules l ii libqimageblitz4 1:0.0.4-4 QImageBlitz image effects library ii libqt4-svg4:4.6.2-4 Qt 4 SVG module ii libqt4-xml4:4.6.2-4 Qt 4 XML module ii libqtcore44:4.6.2-4 Qt 4 core module ii libqtgui4 4:4.6.2-4 Qt 4 GUI module ii libstdc++64.4.4-1The GNU Standard C++ Library v3 ii libx11-6 2:1.3.3-3 X11 client-side library ii libxau6 1:1.0.5-2 X11 authorisation library ii libxdmcp6 1:1.0.3-2 X11 Display Manager Control Protoc ii libxtst6 2:1.1.0-2 X11 Testing -- Resource extension ii lsb-base 3.2-23.1 Linux Standard Base 3.2 init scrip Versions of packages kdm recommends: ii kde-window-manager [x-window- 4:4.4.3-1 the KDE 4 window manager (KWin) ii konsole [x-terminal-emulator] 4:4.4.3-1 X terminal emulator for KDE 4 ii logrotate 3.7.8-6Log rotation utility ii tightvncserver [xserver] 1.3.9-6virtual network computing server s ii xserver-xorg-core [xserver] 2:1.7.7-1 Xorg X server - core server Versions of packages kdm suggests: ii kdepasswd 4:4.4.3-1 password changer for KDE 4 -- Configuration Files: /etc/kde4/kdm/Xaccess changed [not included] /etc/kde4/kdm/kdmrc changed [not included] -- debconf information: kdm/stop_running_server_with_children: false * shared/default-x-display-manager: kdm kdm/daemon_name: /usr/bin/kdm -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-dist-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. 2010/6/6 Johannes Graumann johannes_graum...@web.de: Package: kaffeine Version: 1.0-1 Severity: important When tryong to play a DVD, the responsible part of kaffeine crashes with the error KCrash: Application 'kaffeine-xbu' crashing... sock_file=/home/balin/.kde/socket-osgiliath/kdeinit4__0 Backtrace? (but I can almost guarantee that the crash happens within xine-lib) Xine plays the dvd on the same machine. There are two ways for setting the dvd drive. Apparently xine-lib doesn't like the way I've chosen in your environment. There used to be a problem with drive selection in a prior version (manually changing the drive identification fixed it), however this version does no longer allow access to the drive configuration via the GUI!? The devices are auto-detected (using solid / HAL; if you want to play a dvd kaffeine looks for a device containing a dvd and passes this device to xine). snip Christoph -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-dist-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#584881: Lockups under heavy disk IO; md (RAID) resync/check implicated
Package: linux-image-2.6.26-2-686-bigmem Version: 2.6.26-21lenny4 I keep getting soft lockups; the symptoms appear to be that user processes become deadlocked when they try to access the disk, but the kernel doesn't notice that anything is wrong. It appears that the lockups happen when: (a) my software (mdadm) RAID mirror is resyncing or checking (b) some other program does heavy disk IO I'm currently trying to work around the problem by disabling the system's backups (which are a prime trigger in category (b)) until the post-crash mirror resync is complete, combined with setting the sysctl dev.raid.speed_limit_max to 1000. Just disabling the backups wasn't sufficient because, it seems, various recovery tasks in the most recent crash are sufficient to trigger the bug. I observe that the message from the md driver, and the presence of the sysctls dev.raid.speed_limit_{min,max}, suggest that the md driver is using a fundamentally incorrect algorithm which depends on guessing the available IO bandwidth. Actual hard data: * chiark locked up at 0355 on the 2nd of May. It did so shortly after the backups start. chiark's backups are done with LVM snapshots and rsync. I don't any more have information about exactly at what stage the backups were at. * chiark locked up again at 0355 on Sunday morning the 6th of June. In this case I was able to see that the system had successfully created and mounted the LVM snapshot as the rsync process on the backup master system was still present. * Note that both these two crashes happened on the 1st Sunday of the month. Investigating the kernel logs for the 2nd crash show this: Jun 6 00:57:01 chiark kernel: [3250794.079478] md: data-check of RAID array md127 Jun 6 00:57:01 chiark kernel: [3250794.079479] md: minimum _guaranteed_ speed: 1000 KB/sec/disk. Jun 6 00:57:01 chiark kernel: [3250794.079479] md: using maximum available idle IO bandwidth (but not more than 20 KB/sec) for data-check. Jun 6 00:57:01 chiark kernel: [3250794.079479] md: using 128k window, over a total of 97980 blocks. However there is no sign of it completing. * Shortly after I power cycled the system to get it back up, it locked up again. At that point, the RAID was doing a post-crash resync, and the crash happened at the point where the backup master attempted to start on the next partition. * Some research dug up some reports of first-Sunday-of-the-month crashes associated with RAID integrity checks.[1] So I tried setting the max IO bandwidth sysctl to the lowest reasonable value (by hand) and left the system running. However, it locked up again as the backups started. * I power cycled the machine again and disabled the backups and made sure they were truly stopped. However chiark locked up again mere minutes after coming back up. * I have now power cycled chiark once more and this time I set the max IO bandwidth sysctl. So far it seems to have stayed up for about half an hour. If nothing more goes wrong I intend to leave the backups disabled until the RAID finishes its resync, which we can expect to be some time on Wednesday night. chiark is running LVM-on-MD-on-LVM. So the two disks which form the mirror which is resyncing are actually LVM LVs, and that mirror is itself an LVM PV. The underlying hardware is a Dell R210 with two WD SATA disks (WD7500AYPS-0). [1] https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/212684 seems relevant for example. Bug#584882: devscripts: [build-rdeps] should offer a list-only output of packages, too
Package: devscripts Version: 2.10.64 Severity: wishlist File: /usr/bin/build-rdeps build-rdeps currently outputs package list with a lot of additional information around and blockwise. This isn't very suitable if you want to pipe the list of reverse build dependencies into some other commands or use it in a script. I therefore suggest a new option, maybe -l/--list-only which outputs e.g. package name and component (and maybe even more information) with one package per line and no additional output. Bug#299228: reverse build depends would be really useful
Hi, James Morrison wrote back in 2005: Package: apt-rdepends Severity: wishlist Currently apt-redepends --reverse --build-depends FOO gives the following error: E: Reverse build-dependencies are not supported It would be great if this worked. There is a script called build-rdeps in the package devscripts since February 2008 which does that job. Alec Berryman wrote back in 2006: I also miss this feature in apt-rdepends and asked around today on #debian-devel to see if there is an alternate solution. I was provided with the following shell function: apt-rbdepends () { grep-dctrl -F Build-Depends $1 -s Package /var/lib/apt/lists/*_Sources } That function is even more handy if you add some | sort -u | awk '{print $2}'. :-) It especially offers something build-rdeps can't do (yet, see http://bugs.debian.org/584882): Print just packages names so you use awk, etc. to modify the list, etc. I didn't see that this had been documented anywhere, and I figured that people might look here. Was indeed a good idea! I'll modify apt-rdepends so that it will either point to or call build-rdeps and close this bug afterwards. One that breaks reading model and family in some conditions. this look different Unfortunately I am not able to reproduce it. Tried on an Athlon and on Opteron CPU. For your information, I have been able to find a machine with a CPU identical to yours, and I am now able to reproduce the issue. I'll debug it later today. Ok, here we go, it's a bit tricky. First of all, newer versions of the glibc tries to optimise the string function by using cache information, which are stored in cpuid level 2 and later on an Intel CPU. Secondly, valgrind does not use the real CPU, but always emulates an Intel one, trying to match the characteristics of the host CPU, especially in term of instruction set. When the CPU has no SSE support it emulates an old Pentium CPU, which have a max a cpuid level of 1. This is what happens when the host CPU is an Athlon one. The Pentium CPU is an i586 CPU, which does not support the CMOV instruction, so the libc from the libc6 package is used. On the other hand, the Athlon CPU is an i686 CPU, which does support the CMOV instruction, so the libc from libc6-i686 is used. Everything works well as long as you don't use valgrind. When you use it, it loads all the libraries using the host CPUID, that is it loads the libc from libc6-i686. It latter emulates a Pentium CPU, which has a cpuid level of 1 only. The glibc code recognizes an Intel CPU (as valgrind emulates it), and given it is the i686 version of the libc, it assumes it is at minimum a Pentium Pro (which is the first i686 Intel CPU), which means it assumes that the cpuid level is at 2. This is where all the cache information is stored. The bug really seems to be on the valgrind side, which should not load an i686 library while emulating an i586 CPU. OTOH, if it is difficult to fix, we can maybe remove assumptions that are correct, but wrong when using valgrind. -- Aurelien Jarno GPG: 1024D/F1BCDB73 aurel...@aurel32.net http://www.aurel32.net -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-dist-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#584690: [Pkg-sysvinit-devel] Bug#584690: killprocs: kills root filesystem failing to reboot
Excerpts from Petter Reinholdtsen's message of Sun Jun 06 00:39:28 +0200 2010: [Michal Suchanek] When the root filesystem requires a process to work and killprocs kills that process the system ay fail to reboot because it is unable to read the reboot executable. This is a bug in whatever provides the root file system. The sendsigs script provide a mechanism for services to avoid having their process killed by sendsigs during shutdown (the killprocs script is only used in runlevel 1 and is unrelated to reboot). Which package fail to register their daemons pid using the omitpid feature in sendsigs? This issue should be reassigned to that package. The mount is done by live-initramfs so I guess that's where the issue is. However, killprocs has no such exclusion mechanism afaict. Is that intentional that going single user kills the processes that should not ever be killed? The boring new files are in fact many object and archive files, totaling several gigabytes. Reading those into memory is not going to work. As added information to that ticket, I don't think the combined size of the boring files should be considered improbably large. We compile for up to 8 configurations at the same time (32/64 bit, position dependent and independent, and with and without optimization), and with debug symbols and all, gigabytes is not hard to reach. In short, darcs should not assume the boring files are going to fit into memory. I'm thinking the gzcrc check feature might be responsible for this, because subjectively, the gzcrc warnings started to appear at the same time. I'm assuming some darcs update introduced this. In reality, the team mentioned in the Maintainer field currently consists of me. This package really needs a team to work on it. Hi, What are the major outstanding issues and development plan? I'm afraid I can't promise any help, but I will certainly try to be useful. -- Jonathan Wiltshire 4096R: 0xD3524C51 / 0A55 B7C5 1223 3942 86EC 74C3 5394 479D D352 4C51 signature.asc Description: Digital signature

Bug#584541: fuse-utils: encfs fails (via fusermount) if called from an encrypted dir
On Fri, 04 Jun 2010, Julian Gilbey wrote: The source of the problem appears to be in util/fusermount.c, lines 599-605, where a check is performed to determine whether the current directory (.) is readable. It is not at all clear to me why this should be necessary, as we are about to chdir to the mount point anyway. It's not clear whether this is needed or not. If you look at mount_fuse() the original CWD is restored after do_mount() and before add_mount(). Currently add_mount() is called with the original working directory. If we didn't open the current directory then restoring it would not be possible. Thanks, Miklos -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-dist-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe.
