Bug#591094: [hojia] How to read Chinese PDFs anymore with xpdf?
On Thu, Nov 18, 2010 at 5:02 AM, jida...@jidanni.org wrote: Dear Hojia list, here's more of the conversation, as some participants are not subscribed so couldn't post. Thread is on http://news.gmane.org/group/gmane.org.user-groups.taiwan.tossug.hojia There are recently also some related discussions in gnome-tw-list too: http://mail.gnome.org/archives/gnome-tw-list/2010-October/msg6.html (in Chinese) In some distro BCI is exceptionally turned on for Chinese via a white list, but obviously the list is not very complete. (Though I don't think this is meaningful any more. Why not just turn it on?) One more thing, if auto-hinting is turned on (one of the work-arounds before the patent expired) for FreeType (via font-config or... ), BCI will be forced off no matter if it's compiled in. And auto-hinting doesn't handle the radical assembled fonts which results in the same condition as broken glyphs. So some configuration files would need adjustments accordingly. D == Derek B Noonburg der...@foolabs.com writes: D On 2010 Nov 17, Kan-Ru Chen wrote: jida...@jidanni.org writes: Can anybody read the Chinese these days with xpdf anymore? wget -O x.pdf http://www1.hl.gov.tw/bus/upload/%AA%E1%BD%AC%AB%C8%B9B%A5%FA%C2%D7%BDu%AE%C9%B6%A1%AA%ED.pdf xpdf x.pdf See http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=591094 Should I dump xpdf and instead use what? Thanks. I could confirm the Chinese characters were broken inside my evince. I guess, since poppler disabled hinting, the bytecode interpreter wasn't used at all. IIRC, it was disabled for correctness or better print quality, because grid fitting is not suitable for printing. I used to have a patched version installed locally some time ago. Screenshot attached. D In my experience, that sort of broken output for Chinese glyphs is D always due to a missing or disabled bytecode interpreter in FreeType. D There are two ways that can happen: D (1) FreeType was built with the bytecode interpreter disabled. This was D the default before 2.4 (and the 2.4.x versions can still be configured D this way, but I'm not sure why anyone would do that). Later 2.3.x D versions (I think) of FreeType have a workaround that tries to fix D Chinese fonts based on their name. This may or may not work, depending D on exactly how the font was embedded in the PDF file. I.e., FreeType D 2.4.x should always work; FreeType 2.3.x may or may not work. D (2) FreeType hinting was disabled. In Xpdf 3.02, there is a D compile-time check for FreeType's bytecode interpreter -- if the D interpreter is available, then hinting is enabled, otherwise hinting is D disabled. This means that, if Xpdf 3.02 is compiled with a 2.3.x D version of FreeType without the bytecode interpreter, and then FreeType D is later upgraded to 2.4.x, then Xpdf will still disable hinting. D I believe some Linux distributions (and code forks, like Poppler) may D also modify the Xpdf code to disable hinting. (Certain fonts look D better when FreeType's auto-hinting is disabled.) D If you want to debug the problem, I would recommend doing this: D (1) Download the Xpdf binaries from my ftp site. They're staticly D linked to FreeType (a 2.3.x version, with the bytecode interpreter D enabled). You can just unpack the tar file in /tmp and run it from D there -- no need to install anything. If that displays the Chinese text D correctly, then the problem is almost certainly as described above. D (2) Install FreeType 2.4.x, and make sure the bytecode interpreter is D enabled. Build Xpdf 3.02pl5 from the unmodified source code from my ftp D site. If that works, then my guess is that the issue is one of: D (a) The Xpdf package released by your distribution has been modified D to disable hinting D (b) The Xpdf package released by your distribution was built with D FreeType 2.3.x with the bytecode interpreter disabled (and not D re-built after FreeType was upgraded to 2.4.x). D The next release of Xpdf (3.03) will have a run-time option (xpdfrc D setting) to enable/disable FreeType hinting. Of course, I can't control D modifications made by Debian packagers, the Poppler project, etc. D - Derek Above my head, but I sure hope the Debian people will recompile with all those expired-patent things etc. included this time. ___ ho...@tossug.org http://tossug.org/mailman/listinfo/hojia -- Best regards, Yuan Chao -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-dist-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. I increased the Master and PCM volume values, because if the Speaker volume is setted, too low the sound volume. I changed Mic Boost and Front Mic Boost values with 0, and Decreased the Digital volume meter with 50%. Now when I recorded text with external or internal microphone, the recorded sound is not distorted. If you want and need, feel free modify my patch with compatibility purposes with other sound cards if need defining general standard values (Master, PCM volume meters for example). Bug#603808: xterm: reverseVideo resource inverts reverse video logic instead of setting the default
On Wed, 17 Nov 2010, Sascha Silbe wrote: Package: xterm Version: 261-1 Severity: normal The reverseVideo X resource and the +rv/-rv command line options affect the reverse video feature in strange ways. It seems to get inverted rather than set, though even that doesn't explain why there is a mark for the menu option if the reverseVideo resource is true and no CLI option is given, but no mark in all other cases. The interaction is strange because the +rv/-rv options are processed in the X libraries, and xterm can only infer what's happened. I'll review this to see if I can improve the manner in which the menu-checkmark is set, etc. - that seems to be the intent of the report. thanks -- Thomas E. I never told you to search through lots of C code, neither do I know more. Besides my ability to successfully reproduce this on 2 systems with different hardware all I have are dark memories and wild guesses. I know the issue exists, I know it's nothing really new, and I know that all I have to do to work around it is to avoid GDM restarts. I never tried really hard to track it down, I just never wanted to spend the time it would take. This thread showed up on debian-devel@ and I just added my 2 cents in the hope that somebody probably could gain some ideas from it. Regarding the wild guesses: I personally somehow believe that any of the Gnome daemons transparently started in the background of Gnome applications causes this permanent VT allocation. As I said - it's nothing more than a wild guess - a gut instinct if you like. I cannot prove it. Of course, I already tried to find processes lingering around after stopping GDM - with no success. An idea to trace this down would be to track the processes which increase/decrease the tty usage count in the kernel. I have no idea if this is already possible with the current kernel infrastructure or how, but I'd be willing to run patched kernels to track it. We so then the question is what happens if it is 'busy' and we attempt to use it anyways ;) ? I don't think this should be the way to choose. I would personally prefer solving the cause over working around the result. regards Mario -- If you think technology can solve your problems you don't understand technology and you don't understand your problems. -- Bruce Schneier signature.asc Description: Digital signature

Bug#603533: Missing sl82c105 ide module on IBM IntelliStation POWER 275
This controller is not PowerPC specific. It can be run by traditional IDE driver or by modern libata pata driver. PowerPC kernel is compiled with the traditional IDE driver (sl82c105 module). Other kernel flavors use modern libata pata driver (pata_sl82c105). These two modules won't be used together, so a kernel flavor is compiled with either traditional IDE, or libata driver, but not both. I'm not quite sure why is PowerPC kernel not compiled with the modern libpata driver in Squeeze. At some point in the future all traditional IDE drivers will be purged out, and pata_sl82c105 will appear in the PowerPC flavor, too. Miguel, please make this change into powerpc udebs only so we avoid another mass-upload. After squeeze we ought to review those udebs again and discuss with kernel team about moving to libata for ppc too. -- Otavio Salvador O.S. The /etc/init.d/mountall.sh script reports a red FAILED because of that. This is the only symptom you describe, and that's certainly not critical! Usualy a FAILED message also means the script returns an error, which in turn means insserv stops executing depending scripts in that runlevel and skips to the next. Looking closer at the script I see now that mountall.sh does not report errors through its exit code. So it just makes it impossible to see if something real failed to mount because proc always fails to mount. Sorry for the severity. On the upstream bug, Chris Wilson thinks the correct fix is to improve backlight setting in the kernel, though. There is now a different upstream fix for this in master (commit 33c08882c0d from Keith Packard) which also works for me. I don't know whether you'd prefer to use that one, or the reversion I suggested. http://git.debian.org/?p=users/smcv/xserver-xorg-video-intel.git (the upstream fix applied as a patch instead) certainly works with my current kernel, which is 2.6.32-27 for amd64. I'd committed the revert on monday: http://git.debian.org/?p=pkg-xorg/driver/xserver-xorg-video-intel.git;a=commitdiff;h=2e37d6f4183f695386ded784720870a9598d3825 I don't know of a bug number the initial patch was fixing, so I'd go with the revert instead of the cherry-pick. We were waiting for 2.13.0 to move to testing (which has now happened), I guess we'll upload soonish. The next upload will also probably disable shadow on 865G (which is apparently less broken than 845 and 855), and have some version of http://cgit.freedesktop.org/xorg/driver/xf86-video-intel/commit/?id=455f2939a661764ebb8d1747d44e16a0a8937808 (I had a simpler patch to do this which just called pci_device_has_kernel_driver() from intel_pci_probe(); since we're autoloading i915 from udev we don't need to modprobe it from X.) Let me know if you'd like to work on getting that ready so I can cross it out of my todo list ;) Cheers, Julien signature.asc Description: Digital signature

Hi, As simple user I don't agree. Indeed, firstly with utf8 systems it is hard to communicate with Windows world, and it's however necessary in daily life. Just about all of the interesting murrine themes I've found for XFCE or gnome have required at least 0.98.x , so I really think people would benefit quite a bit from a new version. Hmhm, I don't really know any theme which requires 0.98. That's quite the opposite actually, I had to port quite some themes because of deprecated stuff. I'm guessing it's too late for squeeze, sadly, but have is there any chance perhaps to plop something in to experimental ? At one point, yes, if it's needed, it should be possible. With the gnome and xfce versions unfortunately frozen for a lot of people for a couple years in between debian releases, What do you mean by “unfortunately”? That's the whole point of “release”. it would be very unfortunate for people to not have the ability to choose from alot of the newer themes people are producing. Care to give some pointers to those themes, so I can integrate them in murrine-themes package if they look really great? Bug#598270: RM: nxtvepg -- RoQA; unused, orphaned, outdated
Hi Alexander So Uwe, the package has already been removed nearly a month ago. However, if you want to maintain it, you are free to upload a new version. If I understand it correctly it's much more complicated and needs more time to get a new package into debian than to keep an existing package alive. When the removal of a package cannot be cancelled nxtvepg will not be part of debian 6. As one of my EPG providers here already ceases the EPG service at the end of this year re-introducing the package for debian 7 is too late for it. In 2 or 3 years all EPG providers are dead I guess. Looks like nxtvepg is gone from debian definitely then. Regards Uwe -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-dist-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Not quite. We'd need to fix this with Depends (it's perfectly allowable to install a package without installing its Recommends; it shouldn't break if so) but we shouldn't Depend on the database servers (they might be running on another host). What we currently have is: libdbd-sqlite3-perl | libdbd-mysql-perl | libdbd-pg-perl but dbconfig-common needs the client package to be installed to. What I'd ideally like to express is (libdbd-sqlite3-perl sqlite3) | (libdbd-mysql-perl mysql-client) | (libdbd-pg-perl postgresql-client) but I don't think that there's any way to express this in a control file. The request-tracker3.8 package solved this by introducing separate packages rt3.8-db-{sqlite,mysql,postgresql} which each depended on those pairs of packages, but introducing those empty packages at this stage might be considered too invasive for squeeze, and is also fairly ugly IMHO. Another option would be: libdbd-sqlite3-perl, libdbd-mysql-perl, libdbd-pg-perl, sqlite3 | mysql-client | postgresql-client but this would still pull in surplus database library packages (maybe this isn't as big an issue as I think it is). This must be a common problem for packages using dbconfig-common; will have to do a bit of research later on to find out if there are any other options. -- Dominic Hargreaves | http://www.larted.org.uk/~dom/ PGP key 5178E2A5 from the.earth.li (keyserver, web, email) -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-dist-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe.
