Kind of hard to debug without console output indeed. Does the kernel
boot without xen? Have you tried 2.6.32-27?

Hello Attila,

* hamm...@pickup.hu [101118 07:15 +0100]:
Elimar, I can not see any problem with my installed system after I appliing
your patch and reboot, but this is happening perhaps because I prewious
setted my speaker volume with a higher value with first restart my installed
system and this value is stored.
How can possible absolute sure testing this change?

Set Speaker, Capture, Mic Boost and Front Mic Boost to 0.
Remove /var/lib/alsa/asound.state und run
$ service alsa-utils restart

[...]
I add some toggles with your patch, I setted higher value with Capture, Mic
Boost and Front Mic Boost volume meters with higher values, because default
the Capture volume is setted automaticaly with 3%. Now default my external
and internal microphone is working right after I increasing this volume
 meters values.
I sending the new patch, please look.

If your test works well I'll apply your patch for the next upload ;-)

Regularly, while back-ing up, backtraces start appearing in the kernel

And why is it the kernel's fault if bacula eats all the memory?

If the only problem is that bacula is eating all memory, than the kernel
OOM kernel should kill it instead of letting virtio networking die.

However, seeing how much similar problem reports with page allocation
failures in virtio there are on the web, not involving bacula, I would
rather suspect the problem is in virtio itself.
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=576838#69 also
indicates that this bug was actually not fixed in reality, and that
using another network driver works around the problem.

scsh is just a dependency package that gets you the default version

for 64bit architectures (like your installation), scsh is indeed
uninstallable on 64bit architectures.

manage to create some /tmp/ files.

Doing a chmod 777 /tmp with file system monted solves the problem.

We need more details about the way you managed to do this.

I just ran an install with a separate /tmp partition and it ended with
/tmp being 1777 as expected.

Please give details about hos to reproduce this.

Done nothing special except creating the partitions manually. This is
the second time it appends on different machine and different version of
the installer. Last intaller was AMD64.

I do the install, configure only the minimum system (no extra package vi
tasksel). Change the sources.list to add experimental and do the real
install once rebooted to avoid downloading packages and then upgrading them.

This code did not exist in 0.96-3 so maybe you just need to ask
upstream to think about how they want to this on non-Linux systems?

The code have been added by commit

http://cgit.freedesktop.org/PolicyKit/commit/?id=4a9e4f72db4ec00500d9334f7411a086d7c81d0f

It looks like the whole signalfd() is used used
only for gracefully handle SIGINT.

Iff SIGINT have to blocked all the time, then
brute force solution is to every xxx ms call function

sigpending(set)
if (SIGINT is pending in set)
{   sigwait(SIGINT);
g_main_loop_quit (loop);
}

Iff SIGINT do not have to blocked all the time,
then idea will be to create a pipe and install signal
handler for SIGINT which will write into this pipe
availability of data can be tested by poll/select/...

signalfd is really linux only ...

Bug#603670: early kernel panic as node under kvm (div-by-zero in pvclock_tsc_khz)

2010-11-18 Thread Stefan Bühler
Hi again,

with qemu-kvm from experimental (0.13.0+dfsg-2) you can use:
 -cpu kvm64,-kvmclock
as kvm option to disable kvmclock.

for libvirt use the following in your domain config:

domain type='kvm' xmlns:qemu='http://libvirt.org/schemas/domain/qemu/1.0'
...
  qemu:commandline
qemu:arg value='-cpu'/
qemu:arg value='kvm64,-kvmclock'/
  /qemu:commandline
/domain

(You may have to replace kvm64 with another cpu model)

I tried using clocksource= in the linux boot commandline,
and had no luck with any value i tried.

 In the dom0.

Please could you try the kernel at http://xenbits.xen.org/people/ianc/

really should rebase to -27 but I don't think your issue is new in -27

Googling around, I found this:
http://forums.debian.net/viewtopic.php?f=10t=53941start=0. But I don't
think a bug report has been raised yet.

Running chek_perms -f (as root) gets the number of reported problems
down to 10.

As a result, running sudo bin/unshunt now works and the mbox file is
created, and running sudo -u list bin/arch test reports success.

But now access to the list archives doesn't work any more, as now apache
is unable to access archives/public/test which links to
archives/private/test and apache is not able to access archives/private:

Bug#591094: [hojia] How to read Chinese PDFs anymore with xpdf?

There are recently also some related discussions in gnome-tw-list too:
http://mail.gnome.org/archives/gnome-tw-list/2010-October/msg6.html
(in Chinese)
In some distro BCI is exceptionally turned on for Chinese via a white list, but
obviously the list is not very complete. (Though I don't think this is
meaningful
any more. Why not just turn it on?)

One more thing, if auto-hinting is turned on (one of the work-arounds
before the patent
expired) for FreeType (via font-config or... ), BCI will be forced off
no matter if it's
compiled in. And auto-hinting doesn't handle the radical assembled
fonts which results
in the same condition as broken glyphs. So some configuration files would need
adjustments accordingly.

 See http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=591094
Should I dump xpdf and instead use what?
 Thanks.

I could confirm the Chinese characters were broken inside my evince.

I guess, since poppler disabled hinting, the bytecode interpreter wasn't
used at all.  IIRC, it was disabled for correctness or better print
quality, because grid fitting is not suitable for printing.  I used to
have a patched version installed locally some time ago.

 Screenshot attached.

D In my experience, that sort of broken output for Chinese glyphs is
D always due to a missing or disabled bytecode interpreter in FreeType.

D There are two ways that can happen:

D (1) FreeType was built with the bytecode interpreter disabled.  This was
D the default before 2.4 (and the 2.4.x versions can still be configured
D this way, but I'm not sure why anyone would do that).  Later 2.3.x
D versions (I think) of FreeType have a workaround that tries to fix
D Chinese fonts based on their name.  This may or may not work, depending
D on exactly how the font was embedded in the PDF file.  I.e., FreeType
D 2.4.x should always work; FreeType 2.3.x may or may not work.

D (2) FreeType hinting was disabled.  In Xpdf 3.02, there is a
D compile-time check for FreeType's bytecode interpreter -- if the
D interpreter is available, then hinting is enabled, otherwise hinting is
D disabled.  This means that, if Xpdf 3.02 is compiled with a 2.3.x
D version of FreeType without the bytecode interpreter, and then FreeType
D is later upgraded to 2.4.x, then Xpdf will still disable hinting.

D I believe some Linux distributions (and code forks, like Poppler) may
D also modify the Xpdf code to disable hinting.  (Certain fonts look
 D better when FreeType's auto-hinting is disabled.)

D If you want to debug the problem, I would recommend doing this:

D (1) Download the Xpdf binaries from my ftp site.  They're staticly
D linked to FreeType (a 2.3.x version, with the bytecode interpreter
D enabled).  You can just unpack the tar file in /tmp and run it from
D there -- no need to install anything.  If that displays the Chinese text
D correctly, then the problem is almost certainly as described above.

D (2) Install FreeType 2.4.x, and make sure the bytecode interpreter is
D enabled.  Build Xpdf 3.02pl5 from the unmodified source code from my ftp
D site.  If that works, then my guess is that the issue is one of:

D   (a) The Xpdf package released by your distribution has been modified
 D   to disable hinting

D   (b) The Xpdf package released by your distribution was built with
D   FreeType 2.3.x with the bytecode interpreter disabled (and not
D   re-built after FreeType was upgraded to 2.4.x).

D The next release of Xpdf (3.03) will have a run-time option (xpdfrc
D setting) to enable/disable FreeType hinting.  Of course, I can't control
D modifications made by Debian packagers, the Poppler project, etc.

 D - Derek

Above my head, but I sure hope the Debian people will recompile with all
those expired-patent things etc. included this time.

And seriously, we should stop supporting non-UTF8 locales. It can never

But there are a lot of existing non-UTF8 systems in the wild which want
to still be working after an upgrade.

Bug#593149: Incomplete description for some options in man page tar.1

2010-11-18 Thread Michael Prokop
* Thomas Blein tbl...@tblein.eu [Son Aug 15, 2010 at 09:43:55 +0200]:

It looks like that some descriptions included in tar.1 page are not complete.
According to what I invesigated is that the tarman script responsible for the
extraction of the info from src/tar.c is not able to extract messages that are
 split on several lines.

For example the following message from src.tar.c (l 427-432):

   {occurrence, OCCURRENCE_OPTION, N_(NUMBER), OPTION_ARG_OPTIONAL,
N_(process only the NUMBERth occurrence of each file in the archive;
this option is valid only in conjunction with one of the subcommands
--delete, --diff, --extract or --list and when a list of files
is given either on the command line or via the -T option;
NUMBER defaults to 1), GRID+1 },

is extracted as following in tar.1 (l 199-200)

 .It Fl \-occurrence
 process only the NUMBERth occurrence of each file in the archive;

I just stumbled upon this bug on my own with tar v1.25-2 and:

  {exclude-tag, EXCLUDE_TAG_OPTION, N_(FILE), 0,
N_(exclude contents of directories containing FILE, except
   for FILE itself), GRID+1 },

which reads as:

 --exclude-tag=FILE
exclude contents of directories containing FILE, except

in the manpage which is quite misleading.

Yeah, IIRC there are various proposals floating around.

Does this driver have any sort of future at all?

This driver is necessary in new Macbook / Macbook pro.
This will not be necessary if xorg 1.8 or 1.9 is in unstable, and the
 evdev driver who
supported MT comes to be usable.

Do you know whether multitouch in latest xf86-input-evde is already usable ?

multitouch in XI2 will probably have to wait at least for xserver 1.11.
Driver support likely at the same time. Apps/toolkits, OTOH, I have no
idea. I'm not sure what sort of kludge xf86-input-multitouch is using
to get MT data to clients. Maybe it doesn't, and just handles gesture
recognition in the driver?

Bug#603550: Intel 82801H sound card doesn't work

2010-11-18 Thread Hammer Attila
Elimar, your script is wonderful, I only restarted my script the
alsa-utils service, but not stopped before restart.

I sending a new patch.
I increased the Master and PCM volume values, because if the Speaker
volume is setted, too low the sound volume.
I changed Mic Boost and Front Mic Boost values with 0, and Decreased the
Digital volume meter with 50%. Now when I recorded text with external or
internal microphone, the recorded sound is not distorted.

If you want and need, feel free modify my patch with compatibility
purposes with other sound cards if need defining general standard values
(Master, PCM volume meters for example).

I sending amixer-after-restart.txt file, this file shows right all
volume values is setted right with I want.
I tested the patched alsa-utils working with your script. After alsa is
stopped and restarted, volume values is setted up right, and I hear
sound with speaker, possible use internal and external michrophone.

Bug#603808: xterm: reverseVideo resource inverts reverse video logic instead of setting the default

2010-11-18 Thread Thomas Dickey

On Wed, 17 Nov 2010, Sascha Silbe wrote:

Package: xterm

The reverseVideo X resource and the +rv/-rv command line options affect
the reverse video feature in strange ways. It seems to get inverted
rather than set, though even that doesn't explain why there is a mark
for the menu option if the reverseVideo resource is true and no CLI
option is given, but no mark in all other cases.

The interaction is strange because the +rv/-rv options are processed in
the X libraries, and xterm can only infer what's happened. I'll review
this to see if I can improve the manner in which the menu-checkmark is
set, etc. - that seems to be the intent of the report.

Could it be that this patch breaks other display managers?

It seems my system using kdm does not have any XAUTHORITY setting in the

Also in your patch you replace test with [ ], is there any technical reason for

Please calm down and don't shout at me. I'm not willing to be treated
this way. I don't have time for that.

I never told you to search through lots of C code, neither do I know
more.
Besides my ability to successfully reproduce this on 2 systems with
different hardware all I have are dark memories and wild guesses.
I know the issue exists, I know it's nothing really new, and I know that
all I have to do to work around it is to avoid GDM restarts.
I never tried really hard to track it down, I just never wanted to spend
the time it would take. This thread showed up on debian-devel@ and I
just added my 2 cents in the hope that somebody probably could gain some
ideas from it.

Regarding the wild guesses: I personally somehow believe that any of
the Gnome daemons transparently started in the background of Gnome
applications causes this permanent VT allocation. As I said - it's
nothing more than a wild guess - a gut instinct if you like. I cannot
prove it. Of course, I already tried to find processes lingering around
after stopping GDM - with no success.

An idea to trace this down would be to track the processes which
increase/decrease the tty usage count in the kernel. I have no idea if
this is already possible with the current kernel infrastructure or how,
but I'd be willing to run patched kernels to track it.

We so then the question is what happens if it is 'busy' and we attempt
to use it anyways ;) ?

I don't think this should be the way to choose. I would personally
prefer solving the cause over working around the result.

Bug#603533: Missing sl82c105 ide module on IBM IntelliStation POWER 275

2010-11-18 Thread Otavio Salvador
This controller is not PowerPC specific. It can be run by traditional
IDE driver or by modern libata pata driver. PowerPC kernel is compiled
with the traditional IDE driver (sl82c105 module). Other kernel flavors
use modern libata pata driver (pata_sl82c105). These two modules won't
be used together, so a kernel flavor is compiled with either traditional
IDE, or libata driver, but not both.

I'm not quite sure why is PowerPC kernel not compiled with the modern
libpata driver in Squeeze. At some point in the future all traditional
IDE drivers will be purged out, and pata_sl82c105 will appear in the
 PowerPC flavor, too.

Miguel, please make this change into powerpc udebs only so we avoid
another mass-upload.

After squeeze we ought to review those udebs again and discuss with
kernel team about moving to libata for ppc too.

Is there any non-optical advantage of patching this?

Yes. It takes a few more electrons to parse both control operator ';'
and control operator 'newline', for no good reason.

I don't like adding patches to only remove superfluous stuff that
 doesn't hurt.

Your decision.

Also in your patch you replace test with [ ], is there any technical
 reason for this?

No, no technical reason, though makes it considerably easier to read,
IMO.

How in the world does this count as critical?

The /etc/init.d/mountall.sh script reports a red FAILED because of that.

This is the only symptom you describe, and that's certainly not critical!

Usualy a FAILED message also means the script returns an error, which in
turn means insserv stops executing depending scripts in that runlevel
and skips to the next.

Looking closer at the script I see now that mountall.sh does not report
errors through its exit code. So it just makes it impossible to see if
something real failed to mount because proc always fails to mount. Sorry
for the severity.

There is now a different upstream fix for this in master
(commit 33c08882c0d from Keith Packard) which also works for me. I don't know
whether you'd prefer to use that one, or the reversion I suggested.

 http://git.debian.org/?p=users/smcv/xserver-xorg-video-intel.git
(the upstream fix applied as a patch instead) certainly works with my current
kernel, which is 2.6.32-27 for amd64.

I'd committed the revert on monday:
http://git.debian.org/?p=pkg-xorg/driver/xserver-xorg-video-intel.git;a=commitdiff;h=2e37d6f4183f695386ded784720870a9598d3825
I don't know of a bug number the initial patch was fixing, so I'd go
with the revert instead of the cherry-pick.

We were waiting for 2.13.0 to move to testing (which has now happened), I
guess we'll upload soonish. The next upload will also probably disable
shadow on 865G (which is apparently less broken than 845 and 855), and
have some version of
http://cgit.freedesktop.org/xorg/driver/xf86-video-intel/commit/?id=455f2939a661764ebb8d1747d44e16a0a8937808
(I had a simpler patch to do this which just called
pci_device_has_kernel_driver() from intel_pci_probe(); since we're
autoloading i915 from udev we don't need to modprobe it from X.)

Let me know if you'd like to work on getting that ready so I can cross
it out of my todo list ;)

Julien

Bug#603914: Please drop non-UTF8 locales

2010-11-18 Thread Josselin Mouette
Package: locales
Version: 2.11.2-7
Severity: wishlist

Hi,

I think wheezy would be a good time to finally ditch non-UTF8 locales.
IIRC, we made the switch to UTF8 by default in etch (and we were already
way too late in doing that), and supporting non-UTF8 stuff becomes
harder and harder, at least for desktop software.

I think we should make it clear that legacy locales are not supported
anymore. Maybe by dropping them entirely, maybe by just not proposing
them by default.

Bug#599197: gnome-orca: Bad display of orca's preferences menu

2010-11-18 Thread Jean-Philippe MENGUAL
Hi,

As simple user I don't agree. Indeed, firstly with utf8 systems it is
hard to communicate with Windows world, and it's however necessary in
daily life. Moreover, for users which come from Windows, it would mean
accents problems ... and it's impossible to convert thousands of old
files into utf8 (names and/or contents): dangerous and long. So I think
it's necessary to maintain iso, which works fine until now, even if
sometimes workarounds (orca) and adaptations (OOo) are necessary.

to still be working after an upgrade.

 You mean sarge systems?

Such a change should be documented in the release notes of course, but
IMO for wheezy this should be the end of non-UTF8.

Why do you think this is a bug in start-stop-daemon rather than in
syslog-ng's scripts?

The /etc/init.d/syslog-ng restart script is working fine though.

But logrotate runs that script with the reload option rather than
restart. This looks like bug #599276 which has already been fixed in
syslog-ng 3.1.2-2.

Bug#603915: release-notes: Please document that use of non-UTF8 locales is strongly discouraged

2010-11-18 Thread Josselin Mouette
Package: release-notes
Severity: normal

Hi,

given that we regularly identify bugs, at least for GNOME, that manifest
only when using a non-UTF8 locale - and I mean important bugs like not
being able to unlock the screensaver, non-working screenreader, or
impossibility to list filenames in both a terminal and the file
navigator - I think the release notes should strongly advise users of
legacy locales to upgrade to UTF-8.

On the desktop, such legacy locales are just hacks in the libraries
internals, and we cannot decently provide support for users who still
use them.

The problem doesn’t come from Windows, which is a full-Unicode operating

example various zip implementations.

We cannot encourage users to setup a crippled system for such improper
reasons.

Just about all of the interesting murrine themes I've found for XFCE

Hmhm, I don't really know any theme which requires 0.98. That's quite

deprecated stuff.

I'm guessing it's too late for squeeze, sadly, but have is there any

At one point, yes, if it's needed, it should be possible.

   With the gnome

couple years in between debian releases,

What do you mean by “unfortunately”? That's the whole point of
“release”.

  it would be very unfortunate
for people to not have the ability to choose from alot of the newer

Care to give some pointers to those themes, so I can integrate them in
murrine-themes package if they look really great?

Bug#598270: RM: nxtvepg -- RoQA; unused, orphaned, outdated

2010-11-18 Thread Uwe Storbeck
Hi Alexander

So Uwe, the package has already been removed nearly a month ago.
However, if you want to maintain it, you are free to upload a new
 version.

If I understand it correctly it's much more complicated and needs
more time to get a new package into debian than to keep an
existing package alive. When the removal of a package cannot be
cancelled nxtvepg will not be part of debian 6. As one of my EPG
providers here already ceases the EPG service at the end of this
year re-introducing the package for debian 7 is too late for it.
In 2 or 3 years all EPG providers are dead I guess. Looks like
nxtvepg is gone from debian definitely then.

Regards

Uwe

Hi Cedric, hi Frederic,

I just tried to reproduce this problem and ran my GNOME session with fr...@euro,
but I failed so far. gvfs-mount runs without problems.

Does this problem only happen with certain USB stick, i.e. they have a label
with non-UTF-8 characters?

Hi,

I had this problem with all USB sticks and USB multi-card reader.

One of USB sticks has the label : JULIANA

For the USB multi-card reader, I had this problem even without a card to
be inserted in the drive. Bellow the syslog :

At first glance it looks better. The first call with

 I'll keep phoning...

And so I did.

In short: Negativ.

Asterisk keeps rtp sockets open. I have the impression it happens
more quickly when calls are transfered and then bridged
nativly. Maybe asterisk forgets its rtp sockets in this
situation.

The workaround session-timers = refuse in sip.conf is still
necessary.

Bug#603922: postgresql-9.0: libedit truncates long queries in history

2010-11-18 Thread Louis-David Mitterrand
Package: postgresql-9.0
Version: 9.0.1-2
Severity: normal

The libedit change is really bad:

- Ctrl-W does not behave as usual (kill whole line instead of word),
- having an ~/.editrc to rebind keys is useless
- libedit is badly (not) documented (only libedit-dev has an editrc man page)
- no history search with Ctrl-R,
- and, much worse, a long queries get truncated at ~ 10 lines in history
(recalling them in the editor with \e works though..)

Please re-instate the much better readline library.

Bug#603923: unblock: python-apt/0.7.100

2010-11-18 Thread Julian Andres Klode
Package: release.debian.org
Severity: normal
User: release.debian@packages.debian.org
Usertags: freeze-exception

Please unblock package python-apt

Fixes a problem where python-debian was used in the code
without a dependency on it. Fixed by switching the code
from debian.debfile.DebFile to apt_pkg.DebFile. While
this code is probably not used very often, releasing
with this bug would be bad. I also updated documentation.

With regards to the version jump: The last versions were
alpha/beta/RCs of 0.7.100. Compared to the version in
testing, this version only fixes bugs and brings updates
for (developer-)documentation and translations.

The complete range of versions in 0.7.100.X is reserved
for squeeze, wheezy will start with 0.7.101 or higher.

Sounds great - I didn't expect it to get into squeeze/ubuntu and think
it needs testing before making into a stable release.

is to use open-jdk, which I've been suggesting to users.

  http://people.debian.org/~lucas/logs/2010/11/17/movabletype-opensource.log

I guess all that could be done here is to Recommend postgres-8.4 |
 mysql-server
 - or is there some way to disable dbconfig if the package is being installed
 in
 some automatic way?

Not quite. We'd need to fix this with Depends (it's perfectly allowable
to install a package without installing its Recommends; it shouldn't
break if so) but we shouldn't Depend on the database servers (they might
be running on another host).

What we currently have is:

libdbd-sqlite3-perl | libdbd-mysql-perl | libdbd-pg-perl

but dbconfig-common needs the client package to be installed to. What
I'd ideally like to express is

(libdbd-sqlite3-perl sqlite3) | (libdbd-mysql-perl mysql-client) |
(libdbd-pg-perl postgresql-client)

but I don't think that there's any way to express this in a control
file.

The request-tracker3.8 package solved this by introducing separate
packages rt3.8-db-{sqlite,mysql,postgresql} which each depended on those
pairs of packages, but introducing those empty packages at this stage
might be considered too invasive for squeeze, and is also fairly ugly
IMHO.

Another option would be:

libdbd-sqlite3-perl, libdbd-mysql-perl, libdbd-pg-perl, sqlite3 | mysql-client
| postgresql-client

but this would still pull in surplus database library packages (maybe
this isn't as big an issue as I think it is).

This must be a common problem for packages using dbconfig-common; will
have to do a bit of research later on to find out if there are any
other options.
