Bug#412297: manpages-dev: manpage error.3.gz conflicts with qmail

2007-02-25 Thread Armando Romero
Package: manpages-dev
Version: 2.02-2
Severity: normal

I think the qmail is not directly in Debian, but is very important
software for mail servers. The man page of manpages-dev
/usr/share/man/man3/error.3.gz conflicts with qmail same filename, and
it shall be renamed to something else.

2007-02-07 Thread Armando Romero
Package: openoffice.org-writer
Version: 2.0.4.dfsg.2-4
Severity: normal

I had Openoffice.org Writer on workspace One, with IceWm, then I moved
OOWriter to WorkSpace Two and tried to access File menu. I could not. As
soon as I pressed File I had my workspace magically transferred to
workspace One and OOWriter remained on the workspace Two. Coming back
and trying again did not help.

Bug#405987: Gnome applications menu does not get updated

2007-02-07 Thread Armando Romero
Dear Bill and others who helped,

I was thinking maybe it is something wrong due to /usr/local previous
libraries which I used on Sarge, mostly gphoto2 and some gnome
bluetooth, but there were some pango and I think one called libgmenu or
similar.

I tried with renaming /usr/local to /usr/local1 and I found out that
after ldconfig I got the Gnome Applications menu, so later I deleted by
hand some libraries in /usr/local and I have got Applications menu back.

Thank you for the help, I have solved it now, it was my own problem on
the machine. The bug shall be closed.

Armando

Second check for user dotfile that could override the Debian menu.

 Third try to do

 chmod a-x /etc/menu-methods/gnome-panel-data

Please tell me if that fixed the issue.

 Cheers,

I have on server apache-ssl and apache-perl. If I deselect this module

To setup only apache-perl I had to choose both: apache-ssl and
apache-perl module and later disable to apache-ssl

Bug#407033: gnome-menus: After upgrade to Etch: Applications menu is empty and never gets populated

2007-02-03 Thread Armando Romero
Hello,

I have purged gnome-menus and gnome-panel and bunch of related
applications from my system, by using aptitude purge. And I installed
them again and I don't get Applications menu in Gnome panel yet.

Your suggestion below I have tried and it is independent of the problem.
I have today tried with new user which has no configurations and still
there were no Applications.

It is even more disappointing because yesterday I have installed Etch on
the computer of my friend, but obviously my own upgrade broke the Gnome
system completely.

 .config/menus:
 total 8
 -rw-r--r-- 1 newuser3 newuser3 5409 2007-01-16 06:22 debian-menu.menu

What happens if you move away this file ? Don't remove it entirely: if
not having it does improve the situation, please send it instead.

Bug#407928: Not starting ffproxy due to option in /etc/default

2007-01-30 Thread Armando Romero
Hello,

I can always find solution for myself easily and thank you. It is also
possible to install any software without Debian packaging. But this is
bug for future Debian OS. I think you are right about using update-rc.d,
as it shall be so:
http://www.debian.org/doc/debian-policy/ch-opersys.html#s-sysvinit

but your solution below is even more illogical. The user or admin, if he
does not want to start ffproxy on boot, shall say to ffprox to start on
boot and circumvent such decision by doing something else. Don't you get
the point how silly it is?

Proposal:

1. Either you have decision to start on boot and it happens so.
2. Or you don't have decision to start on boot and it does not start on
boot, but it shall be started by /etc/init.d/ffproxy
3. Or you implement it in such way that update-rc.d is used and that
alone decides if it will run on boot.
4. Or you insert another option to prevent starting at all in addition
to boot option.
if you want to use ffproxy and not start it at boot then :
be sure that 'FFPROXY_START=yes' in /etc/default/ffproxy, then run
something like 'update-rc.d -f ffproxy remove'.

Bug#407927: iceape: proxy configuration disabled

2007-01-30 Thread Armando Romero
I made: grep -ir lockpr .mozilla/
and there was nothing found.

And I made this: grep -ir lockpr /usr/lib/iceape
and this is the output:

/usr/lib/iceape/defaults/autoconfig/prefcalls.js:function
lockPref(prefName, value) {
/usr/lib/iceape/defaults/autoconfig/prefcalls.js:
prefBranch.unlockPref(prefName);
/usr/lib/iceape/defaults/autoconfig/prefcalls.js:
prefBranch.lockPref(prefName);
/usr/lib/iceape/defaults/autoconfig/prefcalls.js:
displayError(lockPref, e);
/usr/lib/iceape/defaults/autoconfig/prefcalls.js:function
unlockPref(prefName) {
/usr/lib/iceape/defaults/autoconfig/prefcalls.js:
prefBranch.unlockPref(prefName);
/usr/lib/iceape/defaults/autoconfig/prefcalls.js:
displayError(unlockPref, e);
Binary file /usr/lib/iceape/components/pref.xpt matches
/usr/lib/iceape/iceape.cfg:lockPref(update_notifications.enabled, false);

Now this gets interesting. You proxy preferences are locked. Which is
 not supposed to happen normally.

Could you try something like grep lockPref /usr/lib/iceape ~/.mozilla
 and give the output ?

Bug#407928: Not starting ffproxy due to option in /etc/default

2007-01-30 Thread Armando Romero
Hello,

I think that one option could be used:

START_ON_BOOT=no

but script can be started AFTER the boot manually: /etc/init.d/ffproxy start

because that is the reason to have the start stop script, right?

If you think you want users to be able to disable start at all, you can
have another option in /etc/default/ffproxy:

DISABLE_COMPLETELY=yes

But I don't think that is required, as if someone wants to make:
/etc/init.d/ffproxy start that implies it shall start.

Emmanuel Bouthenot wrote:
what do you think about adding an option 'force-start' in init

Bug#407929: ffproxy: failed to kill process ID, but process was killed

2007-01-29 Thread Armando Romero
It is not bug in start-stop-daemon but in the script belonging to ffproxy.

The user decides what shall be started on boot. This can be done by
rcconf or update-rc.d on Debian system. For example, some users don't
want apache to start on the root as that is how I like it.

But after the boot, it shall be possible to start the service by using:
/etc/init.d/some_script

Your script in the configuration /etc/default asks only if the script
shall be started on boot. That is wrong, because if I say NO, I cannot
start script AFTER THE BOOT without modifying the configuration.

Either state in the configuration script /etc/default/something that you
ask people if the ffproxy shall start at all, or enable the option in
/etc/init.d/ffproxy that script can be started AFTER THE BOOT without
modifying configuration, but not on BOOT as configured in
/etc/default/ffproxy

Do you get the idea?

It is very logical to me.

Emmanuel Bouthenot wrote:
 Hi,

It's not a ffproxy bug but a bug in start-stop-daemon as described in
 bugs reports #157305 and #352554.

It's an old bug not yet fixed. I've added some informations and ask
the status for this bug (see
 http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=352554#119).

I hope this will be fixed for etch release.

Bug#409018: base: /etc/ld.so.nohwcap missing

2007-01-29 Thread Armando Romero
Package: base
Severity: critical
Justification: breaks unrelated software

I was helping my friend update to Etch, but many of software did not
work. strace found that /etc/ld.so.nohwcap was missing. dpkg -S cannot
find this file. kaffeine and xine did not work, plugins did not work.
gnome-panel is complaining that file is missing.

What is this file and how is it generated?

Something shall be changed in the Etch upgrade that file gets correctly
upgraded if missing.

Bug#407927: iceape: proxy configuration disabled

2007-01-23 Thread Armando Romero
Dear Hendrik-Jan,

first, if software does not allow me to change proxy settings, I do
think that is bug and shall be improved.

And if there is error with profile, iceape shall correct it or at least
give a warning what is wrong.

You have assumptions that I have messed up with the profile and that was
not determined at all. I understand so far that you have no correct
information why I cannot setup proxy.

Permissions are setup correctly.

I have manually deleted all proxy settings from prefs.js and nothing
changes. When some file is wrong software shall say it is wrong or
corrupted, but iceape simply disallow any changes without any information.

thank you for the clarification.
First of all, I understand your problem, but I don't think it is an
iceape bug. Profiles can get messed up for numerous reasons unrelated
to whether or not you use a newer version of a certain package.

Now to your problem: if you go to: about:config in your browser and
type as search prox, you should get a listing of the current proxy
settings. Basically all should be set to default. If not, make sure
that they are, and restart iceape.
If they are set to default I think you are missing some rights on your
profile. You could try a chown -R username.group (as root) on
~/.mozilla

Bug#407135: [Pkg-kde-extras] Bug#407135: digikam: Hangs with splash screen on first upgrade

2007-01-23 Thread Armando Romero
Dear Mark,

today I restarted digikam again, as I don't use it often, and it hanged
three times on splash screen.

I wouldn't call that usable. I do have 6,4 GB in pictures, but
nevertheless.

First time it shows database correction warning, I said YES. Splash
screen came, finished loading and hanged.

Second time it just hanged.

Third time it has shown scanning and hanged with splash screen

Fourth time it came to work.

This is going to be very hard to debug.

Have you only seen this error once?

Or have you been able to reproduce on a number of first time upgrades?

Bug#407927: iceape: proxy configuration disabled

2007-01-23 Thread Armando Romero
Dear Hendrik-Jan,

I am sorry if I was not polite enough.

I understood the bug reporting system as way to improve Debian system,
so I understand that correcting bugs helps get better operating system
later. I suppose that bugs also go to upstream maintainers.

Further, thousands of people have been used or use mozilla in their
existing Sarge system, just like me. Some percentage of them want to use
proxy settings.

I have that picture in mind. Now, Etch is not stable and many people do
not upgrade yet. You know what happens when they upgrade? There will be
just more bugs and more time to spend. Maybe nobody else experiences
this problem but me, I don't know. However, I used Sarge, I did changes
to profile through the Sarge Mozilla and Iceape is follow up and now
proxy settings cannot be touched. That is what I observe.

In that regard the profile does have common things with same product
under different name. If Iceape is re-using previous configuration files
and serves as replacement for Mozilla, it shall also handle them correctly.
As that profile is not generated by iceape, I'd say it's not an iceape
bug. Whether there's room for improvement on this product, is a whole

The ffproxy has option in /etc/default/ffproxy:

# yes = start on boot; no = don't start on boot
FFPROXY_START=no

That is great option which shall prevent starting on boot.

However, if that option is no, the script:

gives:

Not starting ffproxy - edit /etc/default/ffproxy and change
FFPROXY_START to be 'yes'.

Which makes no sense, because /etc/init.d/ffprox shall be possible to

Bug#407332: icewm-common (Etch): Gnome menu items missing

2007-01-17 Thread Armando Romero
Package: icewm-common
Version: 1.2.28-4
Severity: normal

Since upgrade to Etch, Gnome menu items are missing from IceWM menus.

In the file: /etc/X11/icewm/menu the line:

menuprog Gnome folder icewm-menu-gnome2 --list /usr/share/gnome/vfolders

is pointing to non existent directory: /usr/share/gnome/vfolders

It would be good to have access to Gnome menu items through IceWM.

Bug#407033: gnome-menus: After upgrade to Etch: Applications menu is empty and never gets populated

2007-01-17 Thread Armando Romero
Dear Josselin,

I don't think this is related, but KDE providing these files defeats the
point of the applications-merged directory :/

I cannot help on this, and my problem Gnome menus, and KDE menus are
working well
 .config/menus:
 total 8
 -rw-r--r-- 1 newuser3 newuser3 5409 2007-01-16 06:22 debian-menu.menu

Sorry, I removed all the .config directory.

But I am attaching the two files debian-menu.menu and
gnome-applications.menu from another user.

Basically, logging in as completely new user does not show Gnome
applications' menu items, the same for old users.

Bug#407033: gnome-menus: After upgrade to Etch: Applications menu is empty and never gets populated

2007-01-16 Thread Armando Romero
Dear Loïc Minier,

Do you have fam or gamin installed? Could you restart fam or kill
  gamin if you do
I have been installing various programs and have noticed that gamin and
fam conflicts together, and cannot be installed on same system:

Package: gamin
Conflicts: fam

When I start gnome, this is started: /usr/lib/gamin/gamin_server

Nothing is enabled in /etc/gamin/gaminrc.

I have already tried using fam due to similar advice from #debian at
irc.debian.org and today I tried again and this is result:

I had to automatically remove:

gamin
libgamin-dev
libgamin0
python-gamin
sabayon

in order to get fam working. I have logged in as new user into new Gnome
session and following was running:

/usr/sbin/famd -T 0

and there were no menu items under Gnome Applications.

Further, I don't see how is this related, because menu items are not
generated in any other Gnome related menus (like under KDE, IceWm,
perlpanel...) It is not about spotting changed files, what I believe fam
and gamin do.

Please if you have some other smart idea, let me know, and I will try
out, as I would like to use Gnome.

Armando

Bug#407033: gnome-menus: After upgrade to Etch: Applications menu is empty and never gets populated

2007-01-16 Thread Armando Romero
Dear Loïc Minier,
You can try strace on the panel. You can also try creating a new user
to see whether it is affected by the problem in the default config.

I am not as skilled to use strace, however it is probably not panel
question but generation of menus. I am always trying out with new users
and clean configurations and also with present users.

Do you know where is the Gnome applications menu saved?

Which program is updating the Gnome applications?

I think it is in /etc/xdg/menus/gnome-applications.menu but inside I see:

  LegacyDir/etc/X11/applnk/LegacyDir
  LegacyDir/usr/share/gnome/apps/LegacyDir

which are basically not present at all. The directory /etc/X11/applnk is
not existent. The directory /usr/share/gnome/apps/Applications contains
only two entries and /etc/xdg/menus/gnome-applications.menu belongs to
package gnome-menus.

update-menus does not fix it.

Further I don't know if gnome-panel is really reading
/etc/xdg/menus/gnome-applications.menu

Do you have now some other idea?

Armando

Package: alacarte
Version: 0.8-5
Severity: normal

I am missing my Gnome menus and I am learning to use command
xdg-desktop-menu --novendor install /usr/share/applications/*.desktop so
I found out following related to alacarte:

xdg-desktop-menu: filename 'alacarte.desktop' does not have a proper
vendor prefix
A vendor prefix consists of alpha characters ([a-zA-Z]) and is
terminated
with a dash (-). An example filename is 'example-alacarte.desktop'
Use --novendor to override or 'xdg-desktop-menu --manual' for additional
info.

Maybe the vendor prefix shall be added.

Bug#407033: gnome-menus: After upgrade to Etch: Applications menu is empty and never gets populated

2007-01-15 Thread Armando Romero
Package: gnome-menus
Version: 2.16.1-2
Severity: grave
Justification: renders package unusable

I am on Etch. Since one week I upgraded from Sarge. My system was
working well and Gnome was working well.

Now I cannot use Gnome session from GDM login, because there are no
menus in the gnome panel. If I use Gnome section from the IceWm start
panel, there are also no Gnome menus. That means something was changed
from Sarge to Etch in such way that Gnome menus are not any more usable.
update-menus does not help to get Gnome applications menu.

Applications menu is empty. Desktop menu and Place are just usable as
normal, but there are no applications. Other applications like perlpanel
which usually was showing Gnome applications as well do not show any

The same happens if I create new user and log in the new Gnome session,
or if I use some other older user from Sarge.

I appreciate if someone could help me restore the Gnome applications.

Bug#406757: iceape-browser: Download dialogs do not get focused

2007-01-13 Thread Armando Romero
Package: iceape-browser
Version: 1.0.7-2
Severity: normal

Each time I want to download some file, the dialog appears if I shall
download or open it, which is in itself quite usual. Further, when I
choose to save the file, the file chooser dialog is somewhere behind all
windows, instead of appearing just on top of others.

Bug#406403: gnome-panel: Apps, Places, Desktop and right click - do not work

2007-01-12 Thread Armando Romero
Dear Josselin,
Thanks, this looks pretty much like a bug that was fixed in ORBit
2.14.4. Could you try again with the liborbit2 1:2.14.4-1 package from
 unstable?
I am using now Etch and Etch is not stable yet and bug report is related
to Etch. If I try with that version of liborbit2, will that be inclued
in Etch?

I am asking that because I am interested to have next stable
distribution and not unstable or testing.

Thanks.

Bug#406403: gnome-panel: Apps, Places, Desktop and right click - do not work

2007-01-12 Thread Armando Romero
Dear Josselin,

so far I had some success in seeing the applications in gnome-panel:

- I was logged in as user A, than I have opened terminal, xhost +, su as
other user (B) in login shell, exported DISPLAY, then I have delete ALL
hidden directories as user B and run gnome-panel. Suddenly I could see
applications in the menu.

After I logged out and logged in again through gdm into Gnome session as
user B, I could not see the Applications, it was empty. I tried deleting
all hidden directories and running gnome-panel again, but nothing appeared.

Further, I came back as user A into IceWM session, and repeated the same
process, xhost +, su as user B, exported DISPLAY and deleted all hidden
directories as user B and run gnome-panel. NO APPLICATIONS showed.

Then I repeated again, restarted gdm killed all process, also restart
computer, tried again as user B to see the Applications menu but nothing
was there.

Loggin as root or any other user in Gnome does not show Applications menu.

I had some success, after deleting some panel configurations, deleting
.gconfd/saved-state and some accels, basically directories which were
formed when I COULD SEE APPLICATIONS first time I logged in as user B,
then I got panel which I could use, add application, use the right click
and so on.

However, Applications menu is empty. Panel works fine, without applications.

Bug#406403: gnome-panel: Apps, Places, Desktop and right click - do not work

2007-01-11 Thread Armando Romero
Hello,

I am sending you the gdb output from the command you recommended.

Note that gnome-panel did not start visibly. I have not seen anything.
Further, before that, I deleted .gnome2/session

And I am using Etch, testing, and I think the upgrade process is wrong
because there is this bug. This bug cannot be just handled by switching
to experimental, you get idea?

Josselin Mouette wrote:

I have upgrade today all packages and I am on Etch. Gnome-panel had no
Applications before, and now there is no sight of life on Applications,
Places and Desktop. Using right click on panel does not show anything. I
can see one applate (mini windows) working, but I cannot hide the panel
 and do anything with it.

This is probably because the panel or one applet is hanging somewhere
 else.

If this ever happens again, please run in a separate terminal:
   gdb /usr/bin/gnome-panel `pidof gnome-panel`
   ...
   (gdb) thread apply all bt
 and send us the output.

If the bug is reproducible with the 2.16 version from experimental, you
can get a more meaningful output by installing gnome-panel-dbg.
Otherwise, for unstable, you may need to rebuild a debugging version of
the panel, like explained in http://wiki.debian.org/HowToGetABacktrace

Bug#406565: gnome-main-menu: Applications missing completely

2007-01-11 Thread Armando Romero
Package: gnome-main-menu
Version: 0.0.cvs.20061028-1
Severity: grave
Justification: renders package unusable

Before days I updated to Etch and I am today using updated system.

Gnome applications menu is completely missing. It was working just fine
in Sarge. Since update - there are no applications. update-menus does
not help, Perlpanel does not show applications as well. Basically gnome
system is unusable.

Bug#405736: k3b: Preformatting DVD+RW window does not close

2007-01-05 Thread Armando Romero
Package: k3b
Version: 0.12.17-8
Severity: normal

I was preparing to write DVD+RW and I was on other workspace area of
IceWM, while k3b was preparing DVD+RW to pre-format it. I got the
warning window on my workspace area and said OK, however, when I came
back to workspace of k3b, the window Preformatting DVD+RW was there,
the button was deleted and it stayed there all the time, while k3b was
writing data.

Bug#405408: k3b: Unable to reload media - shall be changed

2007-01-03 Thread Armando Romero
Package: k3b
Version: 0.12.17-8
Severity: normal

I am often writing DVD-RWs. When k3b starts writing on it, first it says
that it does automatical pre-formatting, but after that it shows
unpleasant warning message with disturbing sound: Unable to reload
media, please reload manually. That is probably due to laptop design.

However, once it has writtn all the data it ejects the DVD and says
gently that user shall reload media and press OK.

My proposal is to remove that disturbing warning after pre-formatting
(blanking) DVD and to have there the same Reload the media and press
OK notice, without any sound.

Both, disturbing warning and the notice after completing the DVD are not
logical to be together.

Bug#358929: cdcat: DVDs scanning OK, but hard disk: segmentation fault

2007-01-03 Thread Armando Romero
Package: cdcat
Version: 1.01b-1
Followup-For: Bug #358929

cdcat is very useful software. I can scan DVDs without problems, but
when trying to scan about 4.5 GB of hard disk directory, there is
segmentation fault and renders software unusable.

Bug#405274: module-assistant: cannot compile under 2.6.19-1, due to non-existant linux/config.h

2007-01-02 Thread Armando Romero

This software is doing well for kernel 2.6.15, but not for kernel
