Is this the same as https://github.com/alsa-project/alsa-lib/issues/352 ?

Seems to be the case. Sound is working again with the patches applied.

Bug#998893: orphan-sysvinit-scripts: fails to configure: "not replacing deleted config file /etc/init.d/rsyslog"

2021-11-09 Thread Dirk Griesbach

Hi,

While rsyslog doesn't ship its init script anymore, ucf is still having
a reference to that script after the rsyslog upgrade.

,
| # ls -l /var/lib/ucf/cache/*rsyslog*
| -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 2864 5. Nov 01:24
/var/lib/ucf/cache/:etc:init.d:rsyslog
`

For ucf, the case is clear. The configuration file is under its control
and the file was changed (deleted) and per policy, all changes to
configuration files must be preserved. So, orphan-sysvinit-scripts isn't
allowed to "overwrite" this change by creating a new file.

As a workaround, the environment variable UCF_FORCE_CONFFMISS=1 can be set
and then the upgrade will run through.

I guess, rsyslog eventually needs to de-register that file from ucf
correctly when removing the init script.

Cheers,
Dirk

other packages rely on dhcpcd to be located in /sbin. The former
/etc/alternatives entry letting dhcpcd point to /sbin/dhcpcd was also
removed with this package. Current ifupdown (0.8.34) is one of the

should have *_all.deb as a naming convention? But this may well be a
misunderstanding on my side.
Now, dkms run on amd64 produces binaries for *amd64* architecture, and
if you run the same command on i386 you will produce kernel modules
that can run only on *i386* architecture

For binary packages that's what I would expect. So dkms does the right
thing.

*all* is a suffix used when the built artifacts are the same in every
architecture (e.g. an image, a pdf, an html file, a documentation
package, that is the same everywhere).

Having _all.deb was a mistake on the module generation, because the
same file would have had no information about its content, and would
have been called exactly the same on different architectures.

So, I'm confident enough that the fix now is "correct", and I hope
somebody else would ack my changes, because
I'm not a direct user of this feature, so my blind fix might have been
incorrectly applied.

In my case I use dkms --source-only. The package does not contain arch
specific binaries but with the current dkms version the result will also
get the arch suffix. I would have expected the package to contain a
non-arch suffix as there is no need for such a thing in that case. But I
also don't mind if the current behaviour stays. It still works for me.

Bug#909818: firefox: Web Content is eating nearly 100% CPU, several of them

2018-11-03 Thread Dirk Griesbach
Package: fontconfig
Version: 2.13.1-1
Followup-For: Bug #909818

Progress. I had the same problem here(TM). Deleting global and local
fontconfig cache did not solve the problem.

After clearing the local fontconfig cache, that cache would be recreated
and it would get an additional amount of cache entries, e.g. every time
I would start Firefox. In the end, ~/.cache/fontconfig contained around
38000 files. Looking at their content, they pointed to
~/.local/share/fonts.

I used custom fonts stored in ~/.local/share/fonts back then but
currently the directory is empty. After deletion of
~/.local/share/fonts, the number of files in ~/.cache/fontconfig (After
clearing this one a final time) stays small and constant and Firefox is
reacting normal again.

Dirk

Bug#888048: newsboat: valid podcast downloads are dismissed because of MIME type

2018-01-22 Thread Dirk Griesbach
Package: newsboat
Version: 2.10.2-3
Severity: normal
Tags: upstream

Hello,

newsboat is a bit restrictive on podcast media types. This seems to come
from a commit[1] where only (some) audio types are accepted to choose
audio over jpeg[2] (and because newsboat can't handle more than one
media file per item?). However, this does dismiss other audio formats
like audio/aac and all of the video MIME types (video/mp4 in my case)
and overall looks like a lot of collateral damage.

Result: Nothing but the whitelisted media types can be downloaded with
newsboat/podboat.

I'm not sure adding more MIME types to the whitelist is the right thing
to do but might be at least a short term solution. Or just revert the
commit[1] and live with issue 604[2] for the moment? Eventually, support
for multiple media files per item seems like the right thing to do.

Thanks,
Dirk

Version: 2.2.0.3-5
Severity: normal
Tags: patch

Hi,

when creating a source-only deb, dkms will call dpkg-buildpackage, which
creates a *_all.deb package. Version 2.2.0.3-5 introduced
$debian_build_arch as part of the then invoked mv command, which fails.

>From a quick glance, calling mkdeb without --source-only will suffer
from the same problem, but I did not test it.

If I glanced right, you can apply revert_all.patch. If I'm wrong, try
source_deb.patch, which will use 'all' only if --source-only was
provided. Or, if thats an option, simply use a wildcard instead of a
specific arch postfix if other options aren't at hand.

Regards,
Dirk

Bug#814258: vlc: hotkey CTRL+L does not open playlist with locale LANG=de_DE.UTF-8

Hello,

It's no longer possible to use CTRL+L to bring up the playlist in my
de_DE.UTF-8 environment. The shortcut worked fine in version 2.2.1 and
still works if I set the locale to e.g. en.

The hook in question changed behaviour from udev 222 to 223 where the
explicit test for directories /etc/systemd/network and
/lib/systemd/network to copy *.link files was replaced by a non
conditional find. The latter fails as at least /etc/systemd/network is
not present on (my) sysvinit-powered systems.

Thanks,
Dirk

Bug#784687: still not working from remote machine

I guess in this case a TCP-connection will be used rather than the local
unix socket. With -nolisten tcp as default, this would fail. If I try to
specify DISPLAY with localhost or hostname, I get an error like "Error:
Can't open display: localhost:0.0".

Maybe the behaviour was changed and in previous versions localhost was
not resolved to a TCP-connection because, hey its local, lets fall back
to/use unix sockets and now the distinction is more strict. But as I
said, right now I'm just guessing.

Let's try a new bug. If they are the same they can be merged later on.
But you can mention this one.

Stupid question of mine and regardless of where the bug actually
originates: Why is this bug triggered with vlc 2.2.x but not with 2.1.x
where apart from vlc's dependencies the rest of the system is not
changed a bit?

Thanks for your work. I opened #771133 [1] against the intel driver.
Just to be sure I just purged vlc 2.2 and reinstalled 2.1 without
changing anything else and only vlc 2.2 shows this behavior.

Yes it does but with the same unfortunate side effect as deactivating
xvideo hardware acceleration: CPU load is rising.

One annoyance I found with GLX is a black flicker as the window focus is
shifting between vlc and another application.

Bug#771133: xserver-xorg-video-intel: colored line on right side / bottom of video

2014-11-26 Thread Dirk Griesbach
Package: xserver-xorg-video-intel
Version: 2:2.99.916+git20141119-1~exp1
Severity: normal

Hello,

With vlc 2.2.x I'm getting a color distorted pixel row at the bottom
and/or a column at the right side of a video if using hardware
accelerated overlay xvideo output. This was reported as #765969 [1]
against vlc but for now is considered a driver bug:
,[ Rémi Denis-Courmont ]-
| troubleshooting it on an affected system and so far it does seem like a
| driver bug: the driver is blending the last line of visible pixels with
| the first line of pixels outside the visible area. All zeroes
| corresponds to dark green in YUV colours space.
`
So here I am. This happens in fullscreen and windowed mode and the color
pattern of the line is changing if, e.g. I move a second window around.

Test case: Big Buck Bunny[2] is a nice example: I tried the video in
854x480 and both mp4 and ogg give me a color-distorted column at the
right side. If I try the 1920x1080-version the bottom row is affected.

Screenshots from the other bug report:
https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?msg=50;filename=bottom.png;att=1;bug=765969
https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?msg=50;filename=rightside.png;att=2;bug=765969

On another occasion I saw two rows affected where the bottom row is a
more solid color and the row above it is only slightly tainted with the
actual content shining through.

Dirk

Bug#768873: vlc: segfault with ASCII-art video output

2014-11-09 Thread Dirk Griesbach
Package: vlc
Version: 2.2.0~rc1-1
Severity: normal

Hello,

If the ASCII-art video output is used, vlc will crash with a segfault
when trying to play a video. The colored ASCII-art output plays just
fine. I've attached a gdb session. This is on an up-to-date unstable
with an Intel 945GM graphics chipset. VLC 2.15 had both ASCII and
colored ASCII outputs working properly.

Dirk

Please find attached two fullscreenshots for both cases. Btw. I'm
running an up-to-date Debian unstable with an Intel 945GM graphics
chipset.

With some videos I get an horizontal line at the bottom and with others
I get a vertical line on the right side. The line is obscuring the
video.

Big Buck Bunny[1] is a nice example: I tried the video in 854x480 and
both mp4 and ogg give me a vertical color-distorted line at the right
side. If I try the 1920x1080-version the line is at the bottom. avi or
ogg does not matter in both cases.

> Which VLC video output plugin was used and does it affect others?

Here, vlc is set to automatic which chooses xvideo output (xcb).
However, the distortion is not present if I disable "accelerated video
output (overlay)" in vlc. In vlc 2.1.x this problem did not exist.

Dirk

Bug#768323: wget: progress bar throwing assertion

2014-11-06 Thread Dirk Griesbach
Package: wget
Version: 1.16-2
Severity: normal

Hello,

With some downloads the patch for #768110 triggers the following assertion:
| get: progress.c:1161: create_image: Assertion `count_cols (bp->buffer) <=
bp->width' failed.
which terminates wget 1.16-2.

The problem is mentioned in [1] and the given example:
| wget http://fly.osdn.org.ua/~mike/iso/tmp/live-flightgear-20141101-x86_64.iso
will trigger the assertion with version 1.16-2 while version 1.16-1
would just download the file. I think for now a garbled progress bar is
better than not downloading a file at all.

Btw. `wget --progress=bar:noscrol` will not prevent the assertion to
fire in 1.16-2.

Dirk

Bug#768302: wget: ctrl+c sends wget into background

2014-11-06 Thread Dirk Griesbach
Am Thu, 06. Nov 2014 um 12:30:05 +0100 schrieb Noël Köthe:
> Could you retry it with quoting the URL into ""?
> It should behave like the cdimage URL.

Yes, stupid me. After sending the bug report I discovered a devious '&'
hiding inside the URL. And of course it does help to quote the URL in
this case.

In fact I stumbled upon this only because I was looking into spurious
appearances of:
| get: progress.c:1161: create_image: Assertion `count_cols (bp->buffer) <=
bp->width' failed.
| Abgebrochen
which terminated wget 1.16-2.

Now I see [1] and the example mentioned:
| wget http://fly.osdn.org.ua/~mike/iso/tmp/live-flightgear-20141101-x86_64.iso
with version 1.16-2 will trigger the assertion while version 1.16-1
would just download the file. I think for now a garbled progress bar is
better than not downloading a file at all. So maybe it is better to
revert the patch for bug #768110?

Should I open a separate bug for the latter issue or would it be OK to
hijack this one and just rename it?

Cron gave the error message mentioned above with this configuration:
,

Where tor wasn't running at cron-daily runtime but had a log to be
rotated.

Unfortunately, the provided solution does not work:
| /etc/cron.daily/logrotate:
| invoke-rc.d: initscript tor, action "reload" failed.
| error: error running shared postrotate script for '/var/log/tor/*log '
| run-parts: /etc/cron.daily/logrotate exited with return code 1

How about the attached solution? It tests the status of tor and only
then it will be reloaded.

Bug#765407: logrotate: error if tor is not running

2014-10-14 Thread Dirk Griesbach
Package: tor
Version: 0.2.5.8-rc-1
Severity: normal

Hello,

I run tor only occasionally and so it happens that logrotate kicks in
while tor is not running. As long as there is no tor-log to rotate
everything is fine but if a tor-log needs to be rotated, I get the
following message from cron:

| /etc/cron.daily/logrotate:
| error: error running shared postrotate script for '/var/log/tor/*log '
| run-parts: /etc/cron.daily/logrotate exited with return code 1

Thats because logrotate tries to reload tor and its init script will
bail out with an error message and code if tor isn't running. So it
would seem the best to check in /etc/logrotate.d/tor's postrotate
section if tor is actually running before trying to reload it.

Dirk

Bug#707008: dkms: should depend on python-apport

2014-07-31 Thread Dirk Griesbach
Package: dkms
Version: 2.2.0.3-1.2

I don't think it is wise to depend on a package which only exists in
experimental. Besides this, there is no need for dkms to depend on
python-apport as it only executes the package hook if apport is
installed. As apport pulls in the apport python module, everything
should be working as expected: Without installing apport everything is
working and people using apport should cope with the experimental nature
of… um… experimental. :)

However, /usr/sbin/dkms calls the hook if a build problem occurs (and
apport is installed) by executing it with python, which by default is a
symlink to python2. But apport pulls in the apport module for Python3.
And here we go. dkms will fail if it calls its apport-hook as Python2
doesn't know about Python3 modules.

There are several options:
 * Use the attached patches to fix dkms to call python3 explicitly and
port the hook to Python3 (thanks to 2to3). The latter maybe need a
bit more grooming as I didn't test it.
 * apport could at least suggest or recommend python-apport
 * Let dkms only suggest python-apport. This should be OK as suggestions
won't be installed by default. So nobody is forced to install
   a) software from experimental or
   b) apport, even if it wouldn't be experimental.

Yes. Log level info and debug do delay the process while err does not.
Seems like as long as nothing is to be logged (be it through
udev_log="err" or 'exec > /dev/null 2>&1' in net.agent), everything is
working fine.

By the way, same behaviour with a pristine netinstall in VirtualBox.
(debian-jessie-DI-a1-i386-netinst, default base system installation so
no Desktop Manager, etc., dist-upgrade to unstable) – Except we are
talking about 30seconds until udev adds /devices/*/net/eth0. Every time.

set -x doesn't reveal anything interesting, However, I took the liberty
to pipe stdout and stderr for the whole script into file (exec >> file;
exec 2>&1 right on top) to see whats going on and with this there is no
delay. Nice and shiny. Piping the call to do_everything in line 106 in
net.agent to something else than /dev/null or removing its redirections
at all does not do the trick but the comment seems to point in the right
direction.

Why should udev manage the interface at all this early into boot where
it just learns about devices while /etc/init.d/networking is run way
later to ifup the network?

It's reproducible every time. Just for fun I changed the interface from
dhcp to static: same behaviour.

Apart from an libGL error:

which seems to not result in any trouble for now, everything works as

Bug#745092: gimp: web-page plug-in is missing

2014-04-17 Thread Dirk Griesbach
Package: gimp
Version: 2.8.10-1
Severity: normal
Tags: patch

Hello,

The current solution for bug #639761 to build gimp --without-webkit has
an unfortunate side effect: The web-pages plug-in to take screenshots of
web pages from within gimp is not build and shipped anymore. Thats
because the plug-in also uses webkit to do its deed. The patch[1] I
proposed in bug #639761 would not have such side effects: If a user
installs all dependencies, all plug-ins do work as expected. If the user
decides not to install webkit dependencies the affected plug-ins won't
hurt normal gimp operation.

Please drop the --without-webkit compile flag again and consider
adopting the patch.

Regards,
Dirk

As this would not yield the expected result because the web-pages
plug-in also uses webkit, the attached patch downgrades webkit
dependencies to Suggests so one is free to not install them.

I chose Suggests over Recommends because gvfs-backends and libasound2
are suggestions already but feel free to change it as you like.

Bug#741240: vlc segfaults while playing MKV files

I had only 720p *.mkv segfault vlc. However, some Macromedia Flash
Videos segfault too. All H264 (High). Sadly I can't get it to segfault
on purpose. If I play the file a second time it will run past the
previous segfault position without problems. Sometimes it will crash
later on. Sometimes it won't.

Bug#741525: mutt: --enable-exact-address breaks set realname

2014-03-13 Thread Dirk Griesbach
Package: mutt
Version: 1.5.22-2
Severity: normal

Hello,

Unfortunately the fix for bug #698267 (set --enable-exact-address)
breaks at least* "set realname" as in
,
| set realname="Joe User"
| set from="user@host"
`
"set use_from" is enabled by default and I think these are settings
quite often to be found in this constellation. (e.g. Different from
addresses, same realname or vice versa)

With --enable-exact-addresses setting realname will be ignored so
instead of "From: Joe User " it is "From: user@host".
However, if I do "unset from" the realname will be honoured - but of
course "unset from" has its own drawbacks.

Regards,
Dirk

*) It also forces me to reformat my alias-file because I had all the
names and addresses neatly arranged. Names in one column and
tab-seperated email addresses in the next column. However, this
   barely counts as "broken".

the argument order has to be adjusted for and or one
gets error messages like:

Bug#729568: gajim: replace cacerts.pem with recommends:ca-certificates

2013-11-14 Thread Dirk Griesbach
Package: gajim
Version: 0.15.4-1
Severity: wishlist

Hello,

In /usr/share/gajim/data/other/ Gajim ships its own cacerts.pem
certificate store which is a subset of what can be provided by package
ca-certificates. Gajim also uses certificates stored in /etc/ssl/certs
since version 0.13. So it seems at least redundant to ship cacerts.pem
and it makes managing systemwide certificates more cumbersome as one
can't just disable a certificate with ca-certificates but has to
remember to remove it from cacerts.pem - which only lasts until the next
upgrade.

So, it would be nice if Gajim would not ship its own cacerts.pem but
recommends ca-certificates instead.

Regards,
Dirk

Nope, you defined a verbatim binding for ^N and ^P as in N and
P. However, next- and previous-thread bindings are mapped with
the control character which is shown in the help menu as ^, too. If you
want to redefine N and P you should use \c instead of
^ in your binding. See also mutt manual section 3.5 Changing the Default
Key Bindings.

So, any objections to closing this bug?

Bug#729310: mutt: save-hook ignores %b expando after with

2013-11-11 Thread Dirk Griesbach
Package: mutt
Version: 1.5.21-6.4
Severity: normal

Hello,

the %b expando isn't evaluated as part of a save-hook mailbox if the
current mailbox was reached by and the name of the
folder was tab completed. If the name of the folder was not tab
completed but written out, the expando will work as advertised.

e.g. try to save message from folder =foobar to =bar/foobar
a) save-hook . '=bar/%b'
b) change folder to =foo -> =foobar
c) s for save-message will default to =bar/
c) change folder to =foobar without tab completion
d) s for save-message will default to =bar/foobar

Bug#723067: Vertical gradient on element with height >64k pixels causes page to stop scrolling/rerendering

... which is only partly correct. Stock Firefox 24 and 25 both show the
gradient and scroll temp.html but also show the solid colors and
mis-rendering Josh mentioned.

Now, Iceweasel 25 doesn't show any gradient or color at all. However, it
scrolls the whole page without a problem.

This all happens with a Intel GMA950 with SNA acceleration enabled. If I
disable SNA so the default UXA is used, Iceweasel 25 will draw a
gradient with about a tenth of the size the gradient in stock Firefox.
At least it scrolls the page correctly and does not produce additional
solid lines and other mis-rendering like stock Firefox does. Changing
acceleration methods does not seem to have an impact on stock Firefox in
this regard.

Bug#723067: Vertical gradient on element with height >64k pixels causes page to stop scrolling/rerendering

I tested Iceweasel 24.0-2, 23.0.1-1 and 17.0.8esr-2, all show this
behaviour (Debian/sid). However, stock Firefox 24.0 is not affected. It
scrolls and shows the page without problem.

Here is a real world example:
https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=582596
Iceweasel itself does not hang, it seems only the page drawing area is
affected. One can switch between different tabs and interact with
Iceweasel. The CPU usage is down. The scroll bar itself isn't stalled
either and the slider can be moved to the bottom and back to the top -
in this case the site-content is not shown but switching tabs back and
forth will uncover the top of the page again. Search and find does work
as far as I can tell. Even if I can't see results, the slider itself is
moving when navigating to the next hit, all the way down to the bottom.

Hello,

Lately dist-upgrade exits with an error message if only some dependencies are
not met. Before this, it would produce output similar to apt-get upgrade and
try to dist-upgrade whatever package is not influenced by the cause of it.
Likewise, dist-upgrade --download-only just exits with the same output and
won't download any package.

I tested a timeout of 0 and dhcpcd5 will wait for a carrier if non is
present but it seems like dhcpcd5 takes the timeout word-for-word while
waiting for a lease and returns in an instant. It would be great if in
the latter case dhcpcd5 will wait forever, too. By the way, the man page
for dhcpcd.conf does not mention "wait forever with 0".

Bug#706413: dirvish: unicode/umlauts/encoding problem in log and index

2013-04-29 Thread Dirk Griesbach
Package: dirvish
Version: 1.2.1-1.2
Severity: normal

Hello,

Until now I used dirvish on Squeeze. Since I switched to use it with
Sid, pathnames containing umlauts are crippled in image index and log
files. E.g. the directory Mail/Müll is recorded literally as:

index.gz: Mail/M\303\274ll
log.gz : Mail/M\#303\#274ll

The actual storage path in the image is not affected but as
dirvish-locate uses the index-file to locate versions of files, it won't
find anything if the search term contains umlauts and even if the index
contains correct umlauts, it won't recognise it. So a search für "Müll"
does return zero matches although the pre-Wheezy index-files contain the
correct wording/encoding.

Squeeze and Wheezy both are UTF-8 enabled systems.

Thanks,
Dirk

I don't know which component to blame but I recently "tested" this by
accident and xdm does not crash anymore. Looks like the bug was fixed
somehow, somewhere. As far as I'm concerned and if you don't have any

I messed procps and networking, sorry for the confusion. In fact, in
procps I use the line:

# X-Start-Before:$network

> If you can clear up which is before what that would be great.

procps before $network so settings apply to all networking interfaces.

To take effect, those changes need to be setup before the interface is
brought up. You will see it work if you down/up eth0 after boot.

With dependency based boot and no dependency between procps and
networking service, they tend to get the same priority on my system. But
networking is executed before procps, so I have the same problem as you.
(Which I circumvented by adding networking as Required-Start in the
procps init script.)

But I would appreciate a solution provided out of the box because a user
should expect the settings to take effect - not only by chance. I think
this will hit a lot of people who don't know about this and just enable
privacy extensions and think everything is ok.

Bug#665732: reopen: vlc: GUI latency/unresponsiveness to clicks on control options

2012-05-15 Thread Dirk Griesbach
reopen 665732
Package: vlc
Version: 2.0.1-4+b2

I reopened the bug because it's not just about a minimal latency or a
long standing behavior. Under certain circumstances, the delay is in the
range of 10th of seconds and this definitely wasn't the case with pre
2.0 vlc. I found a report[1] in the vlc forum which sounds like the same
problem so we should try to find the culprit.

My observation so far:

* I absolutely can not recognize any delay with ogg audio files.
* volume change while playing wav or mp3 introduces a variable delay of
multiple seconds - I even had the 30 second experience like in the
  linked forum thread.
* This is not only related to the volume change but the whole GUI is
stalled. No reaction on menu or button press actions.
* With some other cpu load, the delay will vanish (or at least be
minimized). E.g. playing another file in one instance and playing the
delaying mp3 in another instance (no dbus invoked); or simple do a
  `cat /dev/zero > /dev/null`
* If the system is idling again (apart from playing mp3), the delay is
  back again, too.
* Doing some click-e-di-click on the desktop while waiting for the GUI and
sound to respond causes the GUI to react and the volume to change.
* No remarkable delay with the vlc web interface
* and last but not least: Pause the song, change volume, resume playing.
No delay except for the pause-play part. ;-)

For me it looks like some event/timer stuff isn't working as it should
be and maybe it's just only the Qt-interface?

Regards,
Dirk

Bug#668927: allow sinntp to ignore netrc

2012-04-15 Thread Dirk Griesbach
Package: sinntp
Version: 1.4-1
Severity: wishlist
Tags: patch

Hi,

By default, if a user does not provide credentials for a server, python
nntplib will try to get them from ~/.netrc. With the attached patch, the
user can specify if this behaviour is desired.

Use case:
a) server which allows credential and IP-address based access.
The latter doesn't need credentials but if they are provided, they
have to match. nntplib tries netrc and if nothing else matches, it
takes the default entry - if this entry happens to not match, the
connection will be refused even if it would be accepted without any
   credentials.
b) server which delivers only some informative groups to users without
credentials but refuses connection with wrong credentials.

Dirk

Bug#667870: gajim: shortcut also activates roster filter

2012-04-07 Thread Dirk Griesbach
Package: gajim
Version: 0.15-1
Severity: normal

Hi,

If I use Ctrl+H or Ctrl+I in my roster, it will open history/show
information of the contact. However, the new roster filter will also
filter for 'h' or 'i'. Shortcuts like Ctrl+Y, Ctrl+O or Ctrl+N work like
expected without activating the filter.

Cheers,
Dirk

Bug#665490: xserver-xorg-input-synaptics: no repeat with physical scroll buttons

2012-03-24 Thread Dirk Griesbach
Package: xserver-xorg-input-synaptics

Hi,

with the update from 1.5.0-2 to 1.5.99.901-1 the hardware scroll buttons
did loose their ability to repeat action by holding the scroll buttons
down. Setting UpDownScrollRepeat and/or ScrollButtonRepeat did not
change a thing and synclient reports those values as activated and set
up properly.

Hi,

Xorg-logfile and xdm logfile gets spammed with

errors every time I lift or set back the pen on the Graphire2. Apart
from this, the tablet seems to work as expected, which explains why I
didn't recognized it earlier, although xdm log says it's happening since
the end of August 2011. At this time I did an upgrade of xserver-xorg
from 1.10.4-1 to 1.11.0-1 and after this the log spamming started.

Bug#650331: dkms: MODULES_CONF reference is removed even if another kernel exists

2011-11-28 Thread Dirk Griesbach
Package: dkms
Version: 2.2.0.2-1
Severity: normal

Hi,

I'm using a dkms-module which provides some MODULES_CONF[] entries in
dkms.conf. When I have installed two kernels, for which the module is
build, and remove one of them, the $module.conf reference gets removed,
too. But the man page for dkms says:

,[ in Section: MODULES.CONF / MODPROBE.CONF CHANGES ]-
| initrd is then remade. Subsequently, as your modules are then later
| removed from the user's system, until the final module/version combina‐
| tion is removed from the final kernel version, those references in mod‐
| ules.conf will remain. Once the last module/version combination is
| removed, those references are then removed.
`

So the entries in $modules.conf should persist.

Regards,
Dirk

Out of curiosity, I tried the binary Firefox provided by Mozilla and
with this, there is no crash. But this doesn't necessarily mean too
much.

Bug#626515: gnome-icon-theme: don't ship icon-theme.cache

2011-05-12 Thread Dirk Griesbach
Package: gnome-icon-theme
Version: 3.0.0-1
Severity: normal

Hi,

I just wondered why the package size is three times bigger compared to
2.30.3 without providing much more icons. Turns out, unlike 2.30.3, this
package ships /usr/share/icons/gnome/icon-theme.cache. This file will be
(re)created on the target system anyway, so shipping it is kind of
useless.

Hello,

Iceweasel 4.0 keeps crashing when playing something through
mozilla-plugin-vlc (same for version 1.1.7). In the attached
~/.xsession-errors, the last line reported involves filename.luac -
Everything seems to work if I remove this file from the path,

I report this against vlc-nox because it provides filename.luac. Please
reassign, if I suspect an innocent.

Bug#555647: xrandr -o left leaves xdm, after I logout, unresponsive, with no login prompt

2011-03-14 Thread Dirk Griesbach
Package: x11-xserver-utils
Version: 7.6+1
Followup-For: Bug #555647

Hi,

It's still existent. If I exit Xfce4 with a rotated screen (which
rotation doesn't matter as long as rotation != normal) back to xdm, the
background image is visible and will get the normal orientation but the
mouse pointer has still the rotated orientation and it looks like xdm
would be running 'behind' the background image. At least it looks like
this, because if I enter my credentials (entering other stuff doesn't
trigger anything), xdm tries to start Xfce4, fails, restarts and there
it is: a xdm with normal oriention.

Bug#610394: dependency on libbcprov-java

2011-01-19 Thread Dirk Griesbach
Package: pdftk
Followup-For: Bug #610394

Hi

Just for the record: On my system, pdftk works quite fine without this
dependency. I don't have any JRE or JDK installed - except the minimum
dependencies of pdftk - so I don't know why this works for me but not
for others, but maybe a 'Recommends' rather then 'Depends' would be
enough in this case?

Bug#610472: libvte9: burns lot of cpu cycles on timer stuff

2011-01-18 Thread Dirk Griesbach
Package: libvte9
Version: 1:0.27.4-1
Severity: normal

Hi

in contrast to libvte9 in unstable (0.24.3-2), this version does use
some nasty timer stuff which consumes about 10-15% of CPU cycles on my
machine when one xfce4-terminal is opened but has nothing to do at all.
The CPU load will increase with more terminals opened.

Bug#593735: vlc: don't exclusively depend on ttf-freefont

2010-08-20 Thread Dirk Griesbach
Package: vlc
Version: 1.1.3-1
Severity: wishlist

Hi,

vlc 1.1.3-1 does not depend on ttf-dejavu-core anymore but only on
ttf-freefont. It would be nice if I could choose, which fonts to use
because right now vlc is the only package which depends an ttf-freefont
for me. So something like depends (ttf-dejavu-core|ttf-freetype) would
be really nice.

Bug#578083: libqtgui4: QGtkStyle error/windows as default style

2010-05-09 Thread Dirk Griesbach
Package: libqtgui4
Version: 4:4.6.2-4
Severity: normal

Same or similar problem here, I think.

I'm using Xfce with gtk2-engines-xfce as the only installed engine,
without KDE or Gnome installed. In qtconfig the GUI style is "Desktop
Settings (Default)". Since Qt4.5 this was enough to have have vlc or
virtualbox look like all other GTK applications, thanks to QGtkStyle.
But since Qt4.6 has entered unstable, it looks like "Desktop Settings"
defaults to the windows style and if I choose GTK+ as the style to use,
not much is changing but I get an "QGtkStyle was unable to detect the
current GTK+ theme." error.

Bye,
Dirk

Interesting. If I select a string with two ", e.g. test"string"123 and
start a dictionary lookup, the actual string in the dict search will be
teststring123. If I do the same for the string test"string, gajim will
throw an error window:

Failed to execute default Web Browser.
Text ended before matching quote was found for ". (The text was
'/usr/bin/sensible-browser
"http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/Special:Search?search=test"string";').

When looking up a string with a backticked command , e.g.
test`echo bla > /tmp/blub` it will open a page with search word test and
the file /tmp/blub is created. But that's no problem, because searching
for `rm /tmp/bla` will clean the mess. :-)

Searching for #test 123 results in the following link:
http://www.google.com/webhp#test%20123&sourceid=gajim

Bug#574839: gajim: failed input sanitizing in chat window right click action

2010-03-21 Thread Dirk Griesbach
Package: gajim
Version: 0.13.3-1
Severity: normal

Hi,

if opening special formed text in a chat window with right click ->
action->wikipedia, or one of the other stuff, the action is not
performed right if the marked text includes e.g. an odd number of " or
other shell-sensitive characters like ' or #. Depending on the String
gajim throws an error message, does open a single tab in the browser for
every space-separated word or does some other weired stuff.

This is because gajim builds the command to open such a action without
sanitizing the input and executes exec_command() from commom/helpers.py
with shell=True. So the underlaying shell gets all the unescaped
characters.

IMHO the best way would be to use subprocess.Popen together with
shlex.split() as mentioned in [1] and shell=False in exec_command() to
solve this issue. Input sanitizing would therefore become no longer
necessary, phrases with spaces would be no problem, the code would be
clean and mean and the world would become a better, a safer place. ;-)

I tried to quick and dirty patch gajim this way, but sadly it had some
side effects on e.g. playing sound or opening the file manager because
of the current way the commands are build, so I dismissed the changes.
(Mostly because of time constraints which prohibited a deeper
investigation.)

Greetings
Dirk

Yes it's still present. The message error on pinned object is displayed
every time I shut down xdm. But I can't remember if this was the case in
December too. As far as I remember, there the message appeared more
often and not only during shut down of the X server.

On the other hand, screen flickering and blanking has gone since I
disabled power saving of i915. And as far as I know it has been disabled
in latest version of 2.6.32 ex factory because of this.

Dirk

Bug#560389: linux-image-2.6.32-trunk-686: [drm:i915_gem_madvise_ioctl] error and screen flickering

2009-12-10 Thread Dirk Griesbach
Package: linux-2.6
Version: 2.6.32-1
Severity: normal

With 2.6.32-1 dmesg throws the following error on a laptop with Intel
945GM integrated graphics and enabled kms every once in a while:

| [drm:i915_gem_madvise_ioctl] *ERROR* Attempted i915_gem_madvise_ioctl() on a
pinned object

Additionally random screen flicker occurs.

While I was surfing the web with iceweasel the screen got a pinkish
surface, making it unable to recognize something on the screen.
Switching from or to console or restarting X didn't make it go away but
the system was responding to (blindly inserted) user input and it was
possible to change the backlight intensity.

There was no error message in the Xorg log.

Dirk

Bug#523018: [Pkg-xfce-devel] Bug#523018: xfce4-panel: doesn't work with some gtk programs either

It looks like it is related somehow.

> I'm afraid I still can't reproduce, even with gajim and auto-hide

Indeed, I had the same problem while trying with a new panel. If the
notification area shows a frame around it, the icons of gajim or wpa_gui
will show up as expected.

Try this:

* create a new horizontal panel at the bottom of the screen with
* full length
* fixed position and
* auto hide = on.
* add the tasklist plugin.
* add the notification area so it is at the outer right of the panel
* edit the preferences of the notification area and disable "show frame"

start gajim or wpa_gui and there is no icon, resp. there is only a very
small portion of the wpa_gui icon visible. For me it looks like the
application or the notification area doesn't set/get the dimension of
the icon and therefore the notif. area doesn't expand itself. (And I
don't know who should be responsible for it)

* if you now edit the panel preferences, switch from fixed to freely
movable and back to fixed position the icons will appear, and they
stay even if you reactivate auto hide - but only till the next restart
So this is at most a workaround for the current session. ;-)
* if the notification area has *no* frame around it and the panel is set
auto hide = off the icons appear as expected.
* if you start a program which does show it's icon without hassle all
"hidden" or "damaged" icons will appear as well.

Greetings,
Dirk
