Bug#471576: Audacious segfault bug

2008-04-29 Thread Dylan Piergies
Yep... removing crossfade works for me too. Very helpful advice, considering
the spontaneity of occurrence, and the myriad of hardware problems I am
currently experiencing (sound card fussy about its PCI slot (confirmed), bad
RAM (also confirmed) and anything else that might want to fuck up on me just
for opening the case). And all this a week before my final exams. F**king
computers. Really flies with the 15 kRPM HD though. :-p

1280 and 854 are nearly relatively prime; I doubt you'll be able to

  edges. Indeed,
(854/801)*1200 = 1279.400749063670412
which is correctly rounded to to 1279, so the behaviour you report is
  correct.

 I now have a 4/3 display, so I tried to reproduce this. I have a SXGA+
display (1400×1050), but even scaling to 1024×768, then choosing the
 sunset2.jpg background, scaled, I can't reproduce this.

Could you retry and report back? (sorry for the delay…)

I just retried, and the behaviour seems to have been fixed.

Meaning that compositing is enabled in xorg.conf :)
 Can you try disabling it?

I'm trying this now. Reproducing the bug is not quite reliable so I'm
not yet sure, but I haven't been able to trigger it yet. This
suggests that the bug only occurs when compositing IS enabled in
xorg.conf and is NOT enabled in xfce.

Bug#474598: scowl: wordlist packages: Bad debconf handling of default wordlist

2008-04-06 Thread Dylan Thurston
Package: scowl
Version: 6-2.1
Severity: normal

I just installed wamerican-huge and disinstalled wamerican on the same
debconf run. I was properly asked which dictionary to use as the
default wordlist when wamerican-huge was configured and selected
wamerican-huge, but then when wamerican was removed (before
wamerican-huge was installed) I got a complaint from debconf that the
choice of dictionaries was invalid, and had to select a different
dictionary.

Would you mind testing a battery plugin build with the sysfs patch

No. I need to disable 3d X acceleration for my dual-head setup, so
compositing is a non-starter.

Does this happen only with xfce4-terminal or with other apps too? Could
you try with gnome-terminal? (with both compositing enabled and
 disabled).

It happens with several other apps, including unison-gtk. I will see
if I can reproduce it with gnome-terminal. I did just observe the bug
in an interaction between gnome-terminal and xfterm4; I sent a
gnome-terminal window to another workspace, where it covered a xfterm
window, and when I switched workspaces the xfterm window redrew on top
of the gnome-terminal window.

What X driver are you using?

intel driver on a 915GM chip.

Bug#473347: xfwm4: Redraw bugs when switching workspaces with overlapping sticky windows

2008-03-29 Thread Dylan Thurston
Package: xfwm4
Version: 4.4.2-2
Severity: normal

If I have a sticky window, A, (on all workspaces), and switch to a
desktop with another non-sticky window, B, beneath it, frequently the
contents of window B are incorrectly drawn. Example attached. The
window in the center is sticky and is above the other window in the
list. 'xfwm-bug1' is taken in a workspace with only that window in
the given region; 'xfwm-bug2' is taken after switching workspaces.

In both cases I have other open windows on my desktop, not shown. In
case it's relevant, I'm using a dual-head setup.

I haven't figured out the entire necessary conditions, but it happens
very frequently and is easy to reproduce.

Bug#433655: xfig: Bug confirmed

2008-03-11 Thread Dylan Thurston
Package: xfig
Version: 1:3.2.5-rel-2
Followup-For: Bug #433655

I can confirm that this bug still exists (and makes that output option
useless). I took a look at the logic in u_print.c, and it looks like
it wouldn't be too hard to fix; shall I create a patch?

Best,
Dylan Thurston

Bug#451570: Two issues

2008-02-10 Thread Dylan Thurston
(Replying only to you, since I have no idea which bug this belongs
with; forward as appropriate)

in 2:2.2.0.90-2. In #452357, the lockup appeared 10s after the startup
of the server, Ken's bug might be more similar to this one.

I do see this bug as well now. In my message from yesterday, I had
only been testing with dual-head (with an external monitor connected);
when I start X with no external monitor (but with large virtual size),
I also get a crash maybe 30 seconds after starting X, after logging in
and parts of my session start. X also crashes when I use xrandr to
turn off the external monitor.

After these crashes, the hardware seems to be left in a bad state: gdm
tries to start several time, and doesn't get as far. I've attached
one of those logs in case it's useful.

Switching to XAA didn't fix this for me, but turning off acceleration
did.

Dylan

2008-02-09 Thread Dylan Thurston
FWIW, I talked to Ken (Chung-chieh) Shan about this issue just now,
and I agree there may be different issues: the problem I originally
reported was an almost immediate lockup on starting X (if the virtual
size was too big and without the NoAccel option), while Ken still
observes a lockup when he logs in, when 'mail-notification' starts and
puts up a pop-up window. (I don't use that tool, so I wouldn't have
seen that issue.)

(We also have different hardware: an HP nc6220 for me and a Lenovo
ThinkPad X60 for Ken.)

Peace,
Dylan

I just had a chance to try the new versions (Debian versions
2:2.2.0.90-2 and 2:2.2.0.90-3), and it now works fine for me, without
the NoAccel option. I have attached the log file from 2.2.0.90-2 and

Far below the surface of the planet is a secret. A place of limitless

Bug#452044: Update: works with the xypic package

2007-12-26 Thread Dylan Thurston
Package: advi
Version: 1.6.0-13
Followup-For: Bug #452044

More information on this bug:

advi will hang when attempting to display an included eps file. For
instance, if you latex the attached test.tex with the attached EPS
file in the same directory, then run advi, advi hangs (while xdvi
displays the image correctly).

I experimented with several different driver options to the graphicx
package, and none of them had any affect.

Oddly, if you load the xy package with the dvips option, advi then
works. In the attached sample file, uncomment the line in the
preamble.

Sorry, I should have said: I created the test-0.mps file by moving the
test.0 file (since latex recognizes the type of file solely by
extension). So to recreate the problem from the files I sent, run

Bug#457622: context: Importing mps files from latex is broken

2007-12-23 Thread Dylan Thurston
Package: context
Version: 2007.12.18-1
Severity: normal

With the latest version of context, including Metapost figures in
latex (using graphicx) is broken. I've attached minimal test files,
and with thoose I get the error log below.

The definition of doflushMPtext in the error is in supp-pdf.tex. The
comment at the top of that file indicates it is only used outside of
Context itself, so I'm guessing this is a bug in context rather than
in the way it is called by graphicx.

This bug does not appear with context version 2007.09.28-1.

I have the same problem on 945GM (FUJITSU-SIEMENS AMILO PRO V3505). I find
out, that problem occures only if parameter Virtual 2560x1024 is set in
 Xorg.conf.
 ...
 ...
And indeed the initial reported uses 3000x1600. Dylan, does it help
if you reduce your Virtual config or switch to NoAccel ?

Yes to both: I reported that switching to NoAccel works in my initial
report, and I just checked: reducing the Virtual config also works.

Only 2048x2048 is supposed to work. Bigger virtual screen were kind of
working before, looks like it is not the case anymore.

They remain very useful...

The old driver used to disable the 3D acceleration on wide screens.
Disabling of the 2D acceleration in addition is annoying.

Dylan Thurston

advi currently fails to display included .ps files in any DVI file.
I've attached one sample, but really almost anything exhibits this
problem.

I suspect this may be due to the recent ghostscript upgrade, but I
don't know precisely what the problem is. Redirect this bug as
appropriate.

From the usage message given from running it with no arguments, it

that man page. (I would do it, but I haven't yet used the program.)

Bug#443402: evince: Can effectively freeze X by grabbing keyboard and mouse

2007-09-20 Thread Dylan Thurston
Package: evince
Version: 0.8.3-1
Severity: grave
Justification: causes non-serious data loss

If you start evince with the attached file placed in
~/.gnome2/evince/ev-metadata.xml by calling evince file.pdf for any
PDF file[1], X will effectively freeze: the keyboard and mouse clicks no
longer have any effect, although the mouse cursor continues to move
and the display continues to update. Killing evince does not fix the
situation. This can cause data loss if any other applications are
open.

[1] I'm not sure exactly what is required to trigger the bug, since I
have to restart X each time, which is rather annoying. Possibly the
file doesn't have to exist or may be a directory; however, calling
evince with no file argument at all seems to fix the problem.

Bug#440143: Why replaces?

2007-09-04 Thread Dylan Thurston
Cyril Brulebois [EMAIL PROTECTED] (30/08/2007):
According to the changelog, not accurate:
 | + Add Conflicts/Replaces: network-manager-gnome ( 0.6.5-1) as [...]

Not doing so would be a grave bug (file conflict between packages).

Do you have a reference for why Replaces is necessary? According to
my reading of policy, only Conflicts is necessary, but I might well
have missed something. With the Replaces, aptitude (eg) will
silently remove the old network-manager-gnome.

Also, why the name change from network-manager-gnome to
network-manager-applet? Was this caused by the Replaces above?

Peace,
Dylan

 It should still be there.
 Did the package install cleanly?

As far as I remember, it did...

I see from my aptitude logs that I upgraded from 6.6-3 to 6.6.1-2 on

Does running this as root make it reappear?:

 cd /usr/share/doc/ghc6-doc/html/libraries

Yes, it did.

Bug#435132: texlive-metapost: Please include latest latexmp version

2007-07-29 Thread Dylan Thurston
Package: texlive-metapost
Version: 2007-12
Severity: minor

The version of latexmp included with texlive-metapost, version 1.1.0,
is very outdated. The current version is 1.2.1, released on 7 Apr
2005.

One improvement (fixing what I would consider a minor bug) is that it
handles the origin relative to the bounding box better: by default it
now places the origin where btex..etex would, rather than at the
center of the bounding box. The 1.1.0 behaviour (center of the
bounding box) loses information and makes it very difficult to line up
different textext strings.

Bug#435051: texlive-metapost: typo in mpman

That's all I've spotted. (Look at all four corners, the errors are
obvious.)

AFAIK no one among the maintainer team is using MetaPost for
personal use, and it's hard to find errors (even this type) of a
 document you've never looked at.

I will certainly let you know if I spot more. Are you also interested
in improvements other than strict error corrections?

may either revert commit 1e2e301348b4168aeed38b3fdc6b0e43d5678a86, or
just apply the attached patch. Please let me know whether it helps.

This patch worked great on both 2.0.0-6 and 2.1.0-2. Thank you!

 Hi Dylan,

Did you have a chance to play with randr-1.2. If you need help,
 feel free to ask.

I've been travelling and just got back. There was a bug earlier,
which seems to have been fixed; it works great now (with the exception
of #432435, just filed).

We have some other bugs about Xinerama problems, for instance
#421449 and #431746. So if you don't care anymore of xinerama
thanks to randr-1.2, we could close this bug.

Yes, please close this bug.

Which network driver are you using with this nm-applet? It could be a driver

I am using ipw2200 on kernel 2.6.22-rc4, with Intel's firmware; and
you seem to be correct that it is a driver conflict, since switching
VTs works fine while getting a network connection from a wired
network. Thanks for the suggestion!

Now where is the appropriate place to send this bug? I'm no longer
sure the video driver is really involved, although I did not see this
problem under the non-modesetting branch.

Bug#430827: crystalcursors: ll_angle present, ul_angle absent

2007-06-27 Thread Dylan Thurston
Package: crystalcursors
Version: 1.1.1-8
Severity: normal

The crystalblue theme includes a cursor for ll_angle, but none for
ul_angle; this is inconsistent.

(I would also complain that ll_angle, bottom_right_corner, etc all lie
about what the cursor actually looks like; while this might be all
right for resizing windows, other applications do rely on the
distinction between, say, bottom_right_corner and top_left_corner.)

It would be good to see the backtrace of these crashs. See the end of
Xorg.0.log (or Xorg.0.log.old if you already restarted X).

I'll have to wait until it crashes again to double-check, but I'm
pretty sure it crashes hard enough that no log files are produced: the
whole machine freezes.

Bug#429687: evince: Thumbnails get too wide

2007-06-19 Thread Dylan Thurston
Package: evince
Version: 0.8.1-2
Severity: normal

The new feature of having more than one thumbnail per line in the
sidepane is nice, but there is a problem: the sidepane can be made
wider and it reflows, putting more thumbnails per line, but I was not
able to make the sidepane narrower; so after dragging the dividing
line for the sidepane to the right, there is no way to get back to the
original state.

As a workaround, I opened up a 1-page PDF file and was then able to
narrow the sidepane.

The new i810 driver does not support Xinerama at all, so the current

1280 and 854 are nearly relatively prime; I doubt you'll be able to

edges. Indeed,
  (854/801)*1200 = 1279.400749063670412
which is correctly rounded to to 1279, so the behaviour you report is
correct.

Bug#375922: texlive-common: Fixing this soon?

2007-05-18 Thread Dylan Thurston
Package: texlive-common
Version: 2007-6
Followup-For: Bug #375922

Any chance of fixing this one soon? Now that texlive has become the
default implementation, this bug wastes many more CPU cycles. It's
much worse in texlive than tetex, since there are so many more
packages.

-- Package-specific info:
If you report an error when running one of the TeX-related binaries
(latex, pdftex, metafont,...), or if the bug is related to bad or wrong
output, please include a MINIMAL example input file that produces the
error in your report. Don't forget to also include minimal examples of
other files that are needed, e.g. bibtex databases. Often it also helps
to include the logfile. Please, never send included pictures!

If your example file isn't short or produces more than one page of
output (except when multiple pages are needed to show the problem),
you can probably minimize it further. Instructions on how to do that
can be found at

Using 'powertop' quickly reveals that yiff-server is a very bad actor

Bug#266718: [tex-k] Bug#266718: dvips font inclusion broken in TeXlive

 Hi Norbert,

not: The problem is to make it short:
If a font is used in an included eps AND in the main document, AND is

In such a case, font is fully downloaded irrespective of -j0 and -j1
in the fixed dvips, and 5.96 is a fixed one.
I cannot reproduce the bug. See the attached zip file,
 which contains fig.mp, test.tex, fig.0 and test.ps.

Let me confirm that dvips(k) 5.96 from the Debian package
(debian-metapost 2007-5) exhibits the buggy behaviour, and not the
behaviour in the zip file that was attached.

Bug#421577: texlive-metapost: latexMP gets bounding box wrong

2007-04-30 Thread Dylan Thurston
Package: texlive-metapost
Version: 2007-5
Severity: normal

latexMP will in some cases get the bounding box wrong, particularly
when there is a minus sign. In the example below, the two labels come
out with different bounding boxes: the second one goes about .9pt
below the baseline, for some strange reason. (Possibly this is a
problem with the font rather than latexMP.)

##
input latexmp;
setupLaTeXMP(class=amsart,
 fontencoding=T1,
 textextlabel=enable);

beginfig(0);
  label.top(textext($1$), (0,0));
  label.top(textext($-1$), (10pt,0));
endfig;

Yes, it was working in teTeX, as detailed in the bug log.

While working on this package to fix some of its pending issues, I
went on this bug which I absolutely can't reproduce it.

I launched chdrv from the console and just got a console with Chinese
characters on it, which seems to be the expected behaviour.

Therefore, I see no reason for the bug to be kept RC. I even think it
 could be closed.

Dylan, 5 years after, are you still in the position of trying to
 reproduce it?

I just did the same thing you did, I installed the package, and it did
seem to work--I was able to input Chinese text.

I do note the package may need some attention; eg, the man page refers
to /usr/doc.

Bug#406692: Apparently belongs to xserver-xorg-core

2007-01-13 Thread Dylan Thurston
reassign 406692 xserver-xorg-core
thanks

After further investigation, it appears that this bug does not belong
to the i810 driver: I tried both new (1.7.2) and old (1.5.1) versions
of the i810 driver with both new and old versions of the main X
libraries, xserver-xorg-core Debian versions 2:1.1.1-15 (current
unstable) and 2:1.0.2-10 (from September 15 snapshot). The version of
the driver makes no difference, but with the newer versions of
xserver-xorg-core (and associated packages) the display size is
reported incorrectly to the clients. Earlier I gave an incorrect
xdpyinfo output; attached is a version from a working version. Note
the reported screen size, which is correct. [1]

This is surprising, since surely someone else would have noticed such
a bad problem with Xinerama if it did show up with other drivers.

Peace,
Dylan Thurston

Bug#403383: emacs-snapshot: file-exists-p error with auctex and whizzytex

2006-12-16 Thread Dylan Thurston
Package: emacs-snapshot
Version: 1:20061209-1
Severity: normal

In some circumstances using whizzytex and auctex, clicking on any menu
yields the following error:

Debugger entered--Lisp error: (wrong-type-argument stringp nil)
  file-exists-p(nil)

To reproduce:
* Set debug-on-error to t
* Open up a TeX file. (I use AUCTeX; I don't know if this is necessary.
* Turn on whizzytex-mode
* Visit another TeX file
* Select a menu item

Of course this might be a bug in auctex or whizzytex; if so redirect
as appropriate. (I have auctex version 11.83-4 and whizzytex version
1.3.0-4 installed.) You get a similar, but longer, backtrace if you
try to connect to emacs using gnuclient.

Bug#376579: works here

 Hi,

longer ago you reported bug #376579 saying that Gtk integration broke
in Xfce. Is this still the case?

Because I just tried it on sid with sids OOo and sids xfce4 and it worked
 for me...

 Can this bug be closed?

Are you sure you have the right bug number? (Title: evince: Won't
load files with relative path and : in name) All the behaviour
described in that bug (failure to load a file with ':' in the name,
failed assertions) still holds, but I wouldn't describe it as GTK
integration breaking in Xfce, although I am running Xfce.

Dylan Thurston

So, the answer is, yes, it's a pending bug.

First, I should apologize for giving the wrong bug number: I meant
393057.

This bug does not seem to be 'pending' in the sense used on the BTS web
pages. If I go to
  http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/pkgreport.cgi?pkg=gjdoc;dist=unstable
it appears as an 'Outstanding' bug; it shows up in searches for 'Open'
bugs but not in searches for 'Pending' bugs; and there is no upload for
gjdoc in the NEW queue, according to
  http://ftp-master.debian.org/new.html
Am I missing something?

Bug#390359: xserver-xorg-video-i810: Xorg log

2006-10-06 Thread Dylan Thurston
Package: xserver-xorg-video-i810
Version: 2:1.6.5-3
Followup-For: Bug #390359

Update: I've attached a log from a failed attempt to start the X server.
I triggered this problem this time by starting X (yielding a partially
working session, as described before) then closing my laptop lid and
opening it. The internal screen remained black after reopening the lid,
and restarting X failed with the attached log.

Bug#390359: xserver-xorg-video-i810: Problems with dual head confirmed

2006-10-04 Thread Dylan Thurston
Package: xserver-xorg-video-i810
Followup-For: Bug #390359

I can confirm problems on my system, a HP/Compaq nc6220 with Intel
915GM graphics, although the symptoms are slightly different.
Specifically:

* I use 915resultion to set the video BIOS to include 1400x1050
  resolution.

* One of my xorg.conf files (attached) specifies dual head with
  Xinerama for an external LCD.

With this setup, dual head works somewhat with
xserver-xorg-video-i810/2:1.6.5-3: X will start and display on both
screens, but:

* xfce does not get the information about the second screen, and, for
instance, the pager only shows the area of the internal laptop
screen. Similarly programs (eg evince) asked to start on the
external screen start with an extremely narrow window, as though
the screen is declared to be of 0 width.

* When I exit the X server, there are often stability problems;
exiting and restarting X will often produce a failure. I also
managed to produce some kernel oops, although I can't guarantee this
  is related.

Everything seems to work normally now that I have downgraded to
1:1.5.1.0-2. Likewise everything seems to work better with a
single-head setup (also attached).

Peace,
Dylan Thurston

Bug#388368: evince: Provide an option to reload a document

2006-09-19 Thread Dylan Thurston
Package: evince
Version: 0.4.0-2+b2
Severity: wishlist

Currently it seems that if you try to open a document that is already
open, evince does nothing. There doesn't seem to be any other way to
convince evince to reload the current document, in case it has changed
on disk.  This is a vital feature when using evince as a previewer;
can you please provide some convenient way to check if the document
has changed on disk?

I experienced this behaviour this with a .dvi file.

Bug#384749: evince: Scrolling the display by clicking and dragging does not work

2006-08-26 Thread Dylan Thurston
Package: evince
Version: 0.4.0-2
Severity: minor

According to the manual, you should be able to scroll by clicking and dragging:

To display the page contents that are not currently displayed in the
display area, use the following methods:
...
 * Drag the display area in the opposite direction to the direction in
which you want to scroll. For example, to scroll down the page,
drag the display area upwards in the window.
...

This would be a nice feature, but it doesn't seem to work at all, in
any documents that I tried. On PDF documents, clicking and dragging
in the display area made some part of the text go white; is it trying
to make a selection and failing to do the highlighting? On other
documents, clicking and dragging had no visible effect. Please either
update the documentation or (preferably) reenable this feature.

Bug#351963: reportbug: Checking package integrity seems to loop on mzscheme
Bug reassigned from package `reportbug' to `debsums'.

The original report stated that reportbug, not debsums was pegging CPU
at 100%. Dylan, can you confirm? What happens when you run
debsums -s mzscheme at the command line? Try again without -s if it hangs.

The bug is unfortunately not reproducible now; it probably occurred
because drscheme was in a half-installed state. I believe it was
'reportbug' and not 'debsums' that was taking all the CPU, but I can not
be certain. 'debsums -s mzscheme' now takes a few seconds and uses
mostly disk access, not CPU.

The bug report states that mzscheme depends on drscheme, but in fact the
dependency is the other way. I'm not sure what the situation was.

Sorry I can't be more help now.

Peace,
Dylan Thurston
