Bug#976235: enlightenment: e switches off screen|monitor
Dear Ross, Long time no see, I have new findings. By now I'm on 5.9.0-5-amd64, have longtime not tried to reactivate e, today found the time, and again, it reacts strangely. Maybe my setup is wrong, I have a ~/.xsession, which is a symbolic link to ~/.xsession-enlightenment, which says: """citation start""" #!/bin/bash if pgrep Xorg >/dev/null 2>&1; then syndaemon -d -K -R -i 1 exec /usr/bin/enlightenment_start else echo "Usage: by X/xdm. See X(7x)." fi """citation end""" What happens is that I see an Enlightenment screen showing on my (laptop) monitor for about a second, then the screen turns black. NEW: If I do nothing, screen stays black for quite precisely 30 seconds, no matter if on VT7 or VT1-6, then screen comes back. If in TTY1-6 it stays, if in VT7 as soon as I press a key or click a mouse it turns black again. But then sometimes also VT1-6 turn black again, apparently without my influence. And in .xsession-errors--where I redirect console output, there's: """citation start""": Xsession: X session started for enno at Di Aug 24 22:29:36 CEST 2021 dbus-update-activation-environment: setting DBUS_SESSION_BUS_ADDRESS=unix:path=/ run/user/1000/bus dbus-update-activation-environment: setting DISPLAY=:0 dbus-update-activation-environment: setting XAUTHORITY=/home/enno/.Xauthority localuser:enno being added to access control list dbus-update-activation-environment: setting QT_ACCESSIBILITY=1 dbus-update-activation-environment: setting USER=enno dbus-update-activation-environment: setting LANGUAGE=de_AT:de dbus-update-activation-environment: setting XDG_SESSION_TYPE=x11 dbus-update-activation-environment: setting HOME=/home/enno dbus-update-activation-environment: setting DESKTOP_SESSION=lightdm-xsession dbus-update-activation-environment: setting XDG_SEAT_PATH=/org/freedesktop/Displ ayManager/Seat0 dbus-update-activation-environment: setting DBUS_SESSION_BUS_ADDRESS=unix:path=/run/user/1000/bus dbus-update-activation-environment: setting LOGNAME=enno dbus-update-activation-environment: setting XDG_SESSION_CLASS=user dbus-update-activation-environment: setting PATH=/usr/local/bin:/usr/bin:/bin:/usr/local/games:/usr/games dbus-update-activation-environment: setting GDM_LANG=de_AT.utf8 dbus-update-activation-environment: setting XDG_SESSION_PATH=/org/freedesktop/DisplayManager/Session2 dbus-update-activation-environment: setting XDG_RUNTIME_DIR=/run/user/1000 dbus-update-activation-environment: setting DISPLAY=:0 dbus-update-activation-environment: setting LANG=de_AT.UTF-8 dbus-update-activation-environment: setting XDG_SESSION_DESKTOP=lightdm-xsession dbus-update-activation-environment: setting XAUTHORITY=/home/enno/.Xauthority dbus-update-activation-environment: setting XDG_GREETER_DATA_DIR=/var/lib/lightdm/data/enno dbus-update-activation-environment: setting SHELL=/bin/bash dbus-update-activation-environment: setting GDMSESSION=lightdm-xsession dbus-update-activation-environment: setting QT_ACCESSIBILITY=1 dbus-update-activation-environment: setting GPG_AGENT_INFO=/run/user/1000/gnupg/S.gpg-agent:0:1 dbus-update-activation-environment: setting PWD=/home/enno """citation end""" I'm at a loss. -- // enno@gmx.net /\\\ Mag. What do you mean by CSM (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CSM)? I don't know the system longer than a few days, but I've tried everything the BIOS/UEFI setup offers for booting, and if memory serves I have started the first install from USB via `Legacy' boot. Interestingly i can boot the USB-stick with the jigdone debian-10.9.0-amd64-xfce-CD-1.iso any time. I cannot boot the (other) USB-stick with (umph) https-downloaded debian-live-10.9.0-amd64-xfce.iso, the Dell says depending on used boot options either `no bootable media found' or similar -- or it says `isolinux.bin missing or corrupt'. My workinglap HP Elitebook says the same about the latter USB-stick. And I have seen some debian bug-reports about similar problems with ISO-images on USB-sticks... Solution available? Maybe a younger or an older Release? Brgds, e. -- // enno@gmx.net /\\\ Mag. Bug#986387: cdrom: Unsuccessful installation on Windows10-Dell-Latitude-Ultrabook. No grub.
Package: cdrom Severity: important Dear Maintainer, *** Reporter, please consider answering these questions, where appropriate *** Jigdone a debian-10.9.0-amd64-xfce-CD1 USB-Stick. Booted a Dell Latitude Ultrabook with preinstalled Windows 10 from aforesaid USB-Stick. Performed full installation including resizing the NTFS partition and including installation of grub(2). Rebooted. No bootable media found. On reboot via F12 I could select Windows Boot Manager to boot successfully into Windows10. But Grub or Linux are not available. Windows10 recognises the resize of the NTFS partition, the additional partitions sda4 (root) and sda5 (swap) are recognised as well. UEFI booting presents a "normal" Windows 10. Legacy booting says, no bootable media found. Booting via UEFI-->Windows Bootmanager boots Windows 10. Legacy AND UEFI booting Installation-USB-Stick work up to the point to register the disk(s), and there it stops, it doesn't seem to recognise the partition table, that the installer has written and is also reported by Windows10. It just presents an unformatted disk of MAX units to go on with. But Windows DatentrÀgerverwaltung does indeed see the created partitions. I'm at a loss. -- System Information: Debian Release: 10.0 APT prefers testing APT policy: (500, 'testing'), (500, 'stable') Architecture: i386 (x86_64) Kernel: Linux 5.9.0-5-amd64 (SMP w/4 CPU cores) Locale: LANG=de_AT@euro, LC_CTYPE=de_AT@euro (charmap=ISO-8859-15) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/dash Init: systemd (via /run/systemd/system)

At least on my laptop, I'm > barely able to make things out if I shine my phone's light on > it. Well I couldn't make anything show up with my really strong LED headlight (BTW I'm a surgeon). BUT... I'm still or evermore puzzled. I just tried .e again, and after waiting about 20 seconds the black screen switches to life and shows an e screen with the usual icons root home and thingummyjig as well as the whatsitcalled e-Bar on the bottom of the window--with a clock and several click launch icons. Soon as I click mouse or type a key--screen turns black again. VT1-6 black, after waiting about 20 seconds the black screen switches to life and thereis gpm and keyboard working perfectly normal--I switch back to VT7, see e for a second--then screen turns black. I did a few updates on suspected potentially involved packages and the like: [INSTALL] xorg-docs:i386 1:1.7.1-1.2 [INSTALL] xserver-xorg-input-evdev:i386 1:2.10.6-2 [REMOVE (PURGE)] xserver-xorg-input-all:i386 1:7.7+19 [REMOVE (PURGE)] xserver-xorg-video-vmware:i386 1:13.3.0-2 [UPGRADE] xorg-docs-core:i386 1:1.7.1-1 -> 1:1.7.1-1.2 [UPGRADE] xterm:i386 361-1 -> 362-1 and now the screen[s] do[es] not come back to life within... uh ah one minute? And BTW I've tried to present my problem on the phabricator, but there is no reaction within 10 days or so by now. Isn't there anybody who knows what these ~/.xsession-errors log lines say: BL: set [/sys/devices/pci:00/:00:01.0/:01:00.0/drm/card0/card0-LVDS-1/radeon_bl0] -> 320 BL: set [/sys/devices/pci:00/:00:01.0/:01:00.0/drm/card0/card0-LVDS-1/radeon_bl0] -> 312 BL: set [/sys/devices/pci:00/:00:01.0/:01:00.0/drm/card0/card0-LVDS-1/radeon_bl0] -> 306 BL: set [/sys/devices/pci:00/:00:01.0/:01:00.0/drm/card0/card0-LVDS-1/radeon_bl0] -> 302 BL: set [/sys/devices/pci:00/:00:01.0/:01:00.0/drm/card0/card0-LVDS-1/radeon_bl0] -> 300 BL: set [/sys/devices/pci:00/:00:01.0/:01:00.0/drm/card0/card0-LVDS-1/radeon_bl0] -> 299 # end citation The only thing google finds (even if cutting off the rather unspecific ` -> iii' line terminations, is Bug#976235 on www.mail-archive.com. The line should be: > value "nofade" uchar: 1; Done that. Makes no difference at all--at least none that I can detect. Still enlightenment_start brings up enlightenment for a second or so, then the screen goes black--and is black on all VTs BUT after switching to one of VT1 to VT6, and typing blindly--after about 2 minutes the console lights up and is back to normal. As soon as I switch to VT7, there's about half a second of seeing e, then the screen goes black--and again all VTs follow being black. BTW what do you mean by backlight keys? Anyway I don't think that there's any `strange interaction', because before I switched that #! switch to 90 everything was alright--apart from e-dialogs complaining about unconfigured screens (or so, can't really remember the wording). Thus it's certainly not a problem between e and my hardware. I suppose I'll try to try the Phabricator, it seems to be somewhat difficult to enter there... C ya, e. -- // enno@gmx.net /\\\ Mag. I > haven't really tried to track down a cause since I normally > suspend using the menu anyhow. That's the only remote similar > issue I've ever seen. First thanks for hangin on. And no, it's definitely not in a suspend/resume cycle--i cold boot into the system, and the problem is there. Still not understood, especially the strange flicker between screen on and off. But as I'm not a LCD technician I haven't a clue, if this is just backlight off or whatever effect it may be. But as stated before, the LCD display is black, but all standard 7 VTs are there and listening to my entries via keyboard--well confirmed I have so far VT1 to VT3, but I don't suppose it could be different on VT4 to 6. Presumably VT7 is working too, but that is a wee bit difficult to test without seeing the mouse pointer. In the past I had some difficulties with a certain release of i can't really remember, i think it was aptitude back then, which after some package updates stopped working properly. Some people from the debian response team said they were surprised that my system was working at all, because of some very old packages combined with a lot of the testing suite. They suggested to upgrade the whole system. After that, aptitude worked. And yes, this might be some sort of solution in this case as well. But I still doubt that this Windows kind of solution is the ultimate debian way: Reinstall. Unfortunately the e documentation is extremely terse. And again unfortunately, the logs in .xsession-errors and other Xorg logs are not very distinct regarding possible reasons of the problem, everytime it stops at a different line. Well long story short term, I had hoped You might be able to isolate something from these logs with more insight than my humble self. Brgds, e. -- // enno@gmx.net /\\\ Mag. Hello Ross, No change so gvfs doesn't seem to be responsible BUT 1 new finding: I had the meanwile usual procedure, starting enlightenment via my ~/.xsession, the aforementioned switching off of the screen/monitor/display (I mean it just turns BLACK), the blind switch to a console VT already being logged in, waiting about 20 seconds, VT comes up again to life, further 20 seconds without any interference by me, and the screen goes black again. I'm just resistant to the idea it might be a hardware error, because with flwm there's no problem at all! Wondering. Please let me know it there's anything I haven't worded sufficiently clear. I haven't investigated recent X things before this, so I just presumed that LVDS is my "Visual", how shall I say, well, my monitor. And of course I haven't closed the lid. BTW closing of the lid perfectly switched my laptop to suspend mode before this mess now--without me having configured anything (apart from having installed pm-utils). > 1) From a VT run `startx xterm` (or whatever terminal you use). > 2) Assuming X starts correctly, you should see a terminal in the > top left. 3) Move the mouse in the term and run > `enlightenment_start`. Works well, opens a new Xserver (Xorg) on the chosen VT with an uxterm, then typing `enlightenment_start' leads to something coming up which looks like e... and after about 2 seconds the monitor is switched off, the hardware I'd say, as all VTs are included. And again, waiting on a (console) VT for about 20" it switches back on. I'm baffled. O BTW just for info it is a HP Elitebook 8460P, so not quite something exotic. Was Windows7 and I installed Debian from USB. Package: enlightenment Version: 0.24.2-5 Severity: important Dear Maintainer, Upgraded e, after that e on start complained in a window that I had no screen configured to display on--but my 4 screens from prior .e were present. But the complaint persisted, so finally I tried the suggested Settings->Screens-- but that doesn't exist. However I remembered there was some Screen config somewhere, found that, didn't find anything to configure. Complaint about unconfigured persisted. Dear Dmitry, Of course I know about the difference between tabs and spaces. Segfault? Anyway I think it's an upstream problem, right from Qt, like so many :(. Brgds, enno. -- // enno@gmx.net /\\\ Mag. Bug#622894: xserver-xorg: VT switching does not work.
Package: xserver-xorg Version: 1:7.6+6 Severity: important VT switching (via Ctrl-Alt-F[1-6]) does not work. When trying to switch, X seems to freeze: no response to kbd, mouse pointer disappears, xclock stops dead. But, in fact the VT has switched, it is just not reflected on video: Can type commands, restart xdm and suchlike, when typing blind. And, when switching back to VT7 (via Alt+F7) everything pops back into life. This is the very behaviour I reported before for xserver-xorg 7.3+20 (i386). Dear Julien, Version: 2:2.3.2-2+lenny8 This doesn't correspond to the version in your log file below. Which is it? Sorry for the mixup. I had in the meantime downgraded the driver to have a working X available. The video driver in question is: xserver-xorg-video-intel 2:2.13.0-5 Linux version 2.6.30.bootlogd (2.6.30) (root@mash) (gcc version 4.3.4 (Debian 4.3.4-6) ) #1 Fri Sep 3 18:13:12 CEST 2010 What is this kernel? Is the issue reproducible with the standard Debian kernel? My kernel is a custom kernel of debian linux-source 2.6.30. I doubt that a standard debian kernel would make any difference, as the incriminated behaviour does NOT occur when using either xserver-xorg-video-fbdev or xserver-xorg-video-vesa drivers (they're just incredibly slow). Moreover all prerequisites according to the README files regarding kernel config are fulfilled. But should you insist -- I'm prepared to do the test. Bug#557425: More problems
Installing grub-pc left my system unbootable, too. It just says: Error 15 (or similar) I suspect that this message comes from the original (now named legacy) grub, as the MBR hasn't been changed at all. Good Luck my trust in debian wasn't that great as NOT to produce some sort of boot-device in advance -- in my case a CD, as my laptop doesn't have a floppy drive. This is the first time I've ever been let down by debian. Anyway, reading through the bug list I found some things and tried: # dpkg-reconfigure grub-pc and got the followin whiptail question: -| Configuring grub-pc |--- The following Linux command line was extracted from /etc/default/grub or the `kopt' parameter in GRUB Legacy's menu.lst. Please verify that it is correct, and modify it if necessary. Linux command line: --- Ok Now that isn't very convincing. I'm not impressed. To add to confusion: my /boot is a separate partition on (hd0,0) usually mounted ro, root is on (hd0,3), whereas (hd0,2) is occupied by some proprietary software that seems to have been correctly identified for the use of creating grub.conf: menuentry Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition (on /dev/hda2) { insmod ntfs set root=(hd0,2) search --no-floppy --fs-uuid --set xyz drivemap -s (hd0) ${root} chainloader +1 } Then (having just hit enter) I get this (as mentioned in previous bug reports): -| Configuring grub-pc | GRUB install devices: [ ] /dev/hda Ok This time I hit space to mark the offered entry. Get answer: Replacing config file /etc/default/grub with new version Installation finished. No error reported. Generating grub.cfg ... Found linux image: [...] Found Micr[...] done Miraculously, now it works. Still, the console isn't configured properly. The grub-shell help is nearly as bad as Windows Help. Whatever, this will create so many 'debian is unstable' or 'linux is unstable' (or replace unstable with unreliable if you like) that if I were in charge I'd immediately remove this package from stable and also remove all dependencies within stable, and resort to good old grub(-now: legacy) or even lilo. Bug#470992: gnome-panel: Notification area shows weird vertical 'streaks'
Package: gnome-panel Version: 2.20.3-3 Severity: minor Starting up Gnome the notification area is placed a tiny bit more far away from the rest of my applets, the space is clear. When I now move the notification applet 'into' the other applets, I can see some vertical streaks, like there are icons, reduced to 1px width. Moving back the space is clear again. I have a screenshot of that, but not knowing if reportbug will let me add attachments I give you a link: http://www.abload.de/img/bildschirmfotoyn4.png I have played around with the session configuration, thinking it could be remains of some broken notify icons but nothing helped. Bug#400099: svn_client_commit3: Assertion `*commit_info_p' failed.
Package: subversion Followup-For: Bug #400099 I have got the same problem. Everything works fine without post-commit hooks. But my post-commit hook file, that worked fine with subversion 1.1.4-2 doesn't work with subversion 1.4.2dfsg1-2~bpo.1. Even if I change it to a minimal test (whoami /tmp/whoami.out) or comment every line out it doesn't work (the normal command is using absolute paths, so this should'nt be the problem.). It only works if I delete the post-commit file. For now I downgraded to subversion 1.1.4-2 again, but I didn't upgrade for nothing. I wanted to get a software package work, which works better with subversion 1.1 (and there isn't anything between 1.1 and 1.4 in the repositories) With subversion 1.1.4-2 everything works fine. -- System Information: Debian Release: 3.1 Architecture: i386 (i686) Kernel: Linux 2.6.9-023stab044.1-smp Locale: LANG=en_US, LC_CTYPE=en_US (charmap=ISO-8859-1) -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Package: starttls Version: 0.10-2 Severity: normal Tags: patch On architectures where sizeof(int) != sizeof(char*), starttls dies with a segmentation fault, while trying to display the program usage information.
