upstream is handling this bug in

working fix is available and so we will hopefully see a new release in
the next few days.

Just for the records, for me the problem is gone with the new version.

Bug#897127: psensor FTBFS on i386/armhf: FAIL: test-cppcheck.sh

2018-05-05 Thread Enrico Tröger
Hi,

we experienced a similar, probably related, problem in Geany:

https://pastebin.geany.org/2nOR1/

It seems cppcheck is crashing for some reason.

The log above is created by the nightly builds from Geany (in this case
the set of plugins) in a cowbuilder environment for Sid with i386 arch.
The same setup runs fine for amd64 architecture and also for the stable
distribution in both architectures.

We see this problem at least since 2018-04-25 but the root cause might
be older.

JFYI, we (Geany upstream) are about to release 1.31 on Monday, so
instead of updating the 1.30 package, it might be worth to wait for 1.31
and fix the libwebkitgtk issue then.

Bug#852322: geany-plugin-addons: Task window does not get populated

2017-01-26 Thread Enrico Tröger
This is not particularly a bug.
Tasks are only parsed in comments, e.g.

# TODO: do something

or

/* TODO: do something */

Simple TODO (or other configured keywords) are not parsed.
Especially on documents without a set filetype, nothing will be parsed
at all. This feature had been implemented in
https://github.com/geany/geany-plugins/pull/449.

If you want this to be configurable, please open a issue at
https://github.com/geany/geany-plugins/issues (or ideally even with a
patch as pull request).

Thanks.

Bug#728192: geany-plugins: Plugins are not available via plugin-manager

2013-10-29 Thread Enrico Tröger
Hi,

I installed geany-plugins and I did not see geany-pluginvc in the
 plugin manger.
Hence I download the upstream package and installed it.

I noticed that upstream installed the plugins to:

   /usr/local/lib/geany/geanyvc.so

Whereas the debian package installed the file to

   /usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu/geany/geanyvc.so

I remove the upstream package and created a link :

what exactly is 'upstream package' and where is it from?

That'd be really, really sadly.

Did anyone already brought this issue to Waf upstream to see whether

My bad. I confused myself. The dependency will stay apache2 | httpd.
So if you don't have a web server installed yet Zabbix will install an

I guess the hidden symbols you are talking about are just
non-breaking spaces (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Non-breaking_space).
If so, this is by no means critical or a security problem.

And as you said yourself, other applications are affected as well.
IMO this is not Geany's fault nor is it Geany's job to filter these out
or anything. Rather bug your browser for not stripping non-breaking
spaces when copying text.

Anyway, one could write a plugin for Geany to automatically replace
non-breaking spaces into normal spaces when pasting text.

Still, not a bug in Geany.

Bug#636608: geany: Geany runs Python scripts using bad Python interpreter version, wrt #! (she bang) 1st line

(it's the default interpreter version under Debian testing)
even when the script begins with:
#! /usr/bin/env python3

I would have preferred the following:

ver. 3.2.1 (default, Jul 10 2011, 20:12:44) [GCC 4.6.1]
( Which is installed on my system, of course. )

Important note Part I : If I execute the same script from the shell,
it is run byt under the right version of the Python interpreter
(assuming octal 500 permissions at least).

Important note Part II : If I type env python3, or just python3,
this launches the expected 3.2... version of the Python interpreter.

Any fixup in mind ?

No, since it's not a bug.
Geany won't evaluate the shebang when executing Python, Shell or
whatever scripts and this is why your #!/usr/bin/env line has no effect.
Instead, Geany uses the configured command in Build-Set Build Commands
to execute the script.
There you can easily change the default (python) to python3 or
whatever you want.
See also Geany's documentation about the build system.

In a dialog box, tabbing moves the focus not just between the
buttons, but also onto the text strings outside the boxes. E.g.,
there are five focus locations in this box: The file 'untitled' is
not saved., Do you want to save it before closing?, Cancel,
Don't Save, Save. Other GTK applications (e.g., Sylpheed) don't
behave this way; the focus only moves from button to button.

I had a quick look at this.
In Geany, we use an ordinary GtkMessageDialog widget which by default
seems to make the labels sensitive to receiving the focus.

In contrary, Sylpheed doesn't use a GtkMessageDialog instead they use a
more generic GtkDialog and put GtkLabel widgets in it manually.
This seems more wrong to me, at least unnecessary complex.

So, I think most GTK applications behave like Geany, rather few like
Sylpheed behave differently.

Though I see that feature of label texts being sensitive for tabbing
isn't really good. So, if it should be fixed/changed in GTK not Geany,
IMHO.

Start a java/C file and type

/*comment*/ int test() {

and hit enter. If your auto-complete multi-line comments setting is
on, geany will add a * to the next line. Subsequent lines are fine,
though.

Thanks for reporting.
Fixed in current SVN version (which will get Geany 0.19).

The package recommends tcl and tk but there is nothing in the package which

I guess it's a left-over from the old startkoules script which seems to get

Bug#561276: [Geany-devel] Bug#561276: geany does not escape '\\' in replace string

Take it or leave it, it's your software. regexp by these days is
pretty much a standard and there are certain expectations people have
when an engine claims to support regexp. It's irrelevant to say oh
well I don't think these standards matter because people will get
tripped up.

Ok. Then take what I said as my personal point of view and so also the
little motivation I personally have to work on this.

If you expect everyone to write a patch, there's no point for
bug-reporting systems. Not everyone has the time to go looking through
the source code.

This includes me as well.
One of the main ideas of open source is that everybody who wants can
contribute and make changes to the code as he/she wishes. I don't
expect anyone to do anything but I also can't implement anything anyone
wishes. My time is limited as well as yours, probably.

Geany uses the regexp implementation of Scintilla, the used editing
component. It's not as good as it could be but it does the job and it
doesn't pull in new, external dependencies like libpcre.
Please read the documentation to learn more about the use of regular
expressions within Find and Replace dialogs in Geany. There are some
limitations and differences but generally it just works.

Well excuse me for not looking through the source code before I filed
the bug. I will forward this onto Scintilla, then. Also (as I said
before), regexp is a *standard* - people should not HAVE to look
through documentation to find out the exact quirks of a particular
implementation.

I agree but still, there is a difference between what would be nice to
have and what reality is...:(.

BTW libpcre is really not a problem for *NIX - most systems will have
some important component that depends on it anyway. And for
windows/mac you can just static-link it.

It's still another dependency. The goal is to use as less external
libaries as possible. Btw, we already use the regexp implementation of
the C runtime environment (if available) and use the GNU regexp
implementation on all other systems (included in Geany's sources). So,
if this would be enough, we would not need an external dependency.

Right, but what if you want to search for a regular expression, *AND*
replace it with something containing the literal \t? The above
examples cannot do this.

In any case, if escape sequences are ON, then \\ should be escaped
to \ regardless of whether regexp is on or not. Actually it should
only an option for non-regexp; it should be implicitly ON when you use
regexp, as is standard in every other implementation.

I suggest using an already-made regexp library instead. Eg. libpcre,
or the code from GNU grep (which does not have exponential
corner-cases - see http://swtch.com/~rsc/regexp/regexp1.html).

You also said Geany were 'trying to implement its own regexp engine'.
This is wrong.

I am using Geany in KDE4 with the gtk2-engines-qtcurve, gtk-qt-engine,
kde-style-qtcurve, and kwin-style-qtcurve packages installed. I'm not
sure if this is related to those packages or not, but when I open the
dialogs for either Find or Replace, the text entry fields are grayed
out and cannot be selected by the mouse. Other controls in the
respective dialogs work and are accessable. The Find box in the tool
bar is accessible and works as expected.

The Find and Replace dialogs contain GtkComboBoxEntry widgets which
provide a text entry paired with a combo box to show previous items.
The only non-standard thing we do is to set the font for the text entry
to Monospace.

I'm not sure whether this is really a Geany bug or rather a bug in one
of your many theme stuff. Did you try disabling/uninstalling this?

On a clean system, it works.

Please have a look at the screenshot, it show a smbshare mounted via

Don't confuse standard GTK file chooser dialogs and Thunar. GTK does
support GVfs since 2.14, Thunar doesn't, at least no stable, released
version.
Your screenshot shows a standard GTK file chooser dialog, probably one
of a mail client.

After all, as I said before, this is all completely unrelated to
Gigolo. Gigolo doesn't actually mount, it's only a frontend to GIO and
GVfs.

This is not a bug in Gigolo.
Stable Thunar releases don't support GVfs mounts yet natively. You can
access them via the GVfs Fuse module using the special path ~/.gvfs/
but Thunar can't show the different mount points directly (yet).

The current development version of Thunar has been rewritten to support
GIO/GVfs and will also display GVfs mounts as expected but this will
first happen in Xfce 4.8.

So, after all, it's just a missing feature in stable Thunar releases.

There's something badly wrong with Geany's display of Hebrew
characters. Short selections are often (usually?) displayed
correctly, but longer ones get garbled. Geany seems to be overwriting
one line with another, resulting in gibberish. Example:

http://www.lynucs.org/index.php?screen_id=18673869314ab8d93d6e3f1p=screen

The above is geany's corrupted display of the highlighted text from
this page, copied and pasted into geany:

http://www.lynucs.org/index.php?screen_id=6342170034ab8d9f0806f7p=screen

I think that I've had other problems with the display of Hebrew
characters, but here's one clear-cut example.

This is a known problem in Scintilla, the editing component we use in
Geany.

Hi, I found out how to do it. It is just that it works differently
that in other applications. The text to copy still has to be
highlighted when I middle-click. I have always left-clicked once at
the point where I want to insert the text before middle-clicking
(which is maybe unneccesary...), and that didn't work in geany. When
I copy text out of geany I can still do this, because then geany
looses its focus and the text is still highlighted in geany after the
left click in the other program.

I had a look at this and I think if this is really a bug, it's a bug in
Scintilla not directly in Geany (Scintilla is the embedded editing
component in Geany).

I tested this also with SciTE (also based on Scintilla) and with
mousepad (based on GTK's TextView) from Xfce. And they both behave like
you describe: pasting doesn't work once the selection is gone. I don't
know the X selection specification (primary clipboard) but maybe this
is the intended behaviour.

Actually, there is an open bug report at
http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=333514 which covers this
issue and I'd suggest for closing/re-assigning this bug as it is not
strictly Geany's fault :).

Hi Enrico,

You are right the user should take care of his disk space. The script
that run was not really to blame, it generated 2GB raw scanned images
on
a 4 GB disk, warning of no more disk space came up but was to late.
 But
this is not the problem behind losing the working files that geany had
opened.

Geany should provide a fail to save error and catch the exception. It
should then not renew the displayed contained of the file. But should
let the user provide an other place to store the file. This way the
current work will not be lost.

Yup, will post an update here when things changed.

Unfortunately, I forgot to update on changes, so let's do it now:

Since Geany 0.16, the configuration directory problems should be gone.

Since Geany 0.17, there is a hidden preference to enable saving *all*
files, config files as well as edited documents, using the
g_file_set_contents (). This means, the contents are written to a
temporary file first, and if this was successful the temporary file
will be moved to the target file (as both files are in the same
directory, it's like renaming the temp file).
As already pointed out, this has several implications on the target
file like loosing file permissions and destroying hardlinks. And so
this is disabled by default. More information about this can be found
in the GLib API docs, see
http://library.gnome.org/devel/glib/stable/glib-File-Utilities.html#g-file-set-contents.

If you like to enable this way of writing files, edit the file
~/.config/geany/geany.conf and set the value of
use_safe_file_saving to true (without the quotes, of course).
More information about setting hidden preferences and the
use_safe_file_saving preference in particular can be found on
http://www.geany.org/manual/current/index.html#hidden-preferences.

This should be enough to close this bug.

Yes, it happens everytime and yes it happens also with a newly created

Yes. I always do a 'manual reboot' in terms of su -c halt or su -c
reboot as HAL doesn't do it for me :(.

anymore if you use policykit + consolekit, iirc (and anyway there's no
more dbus stuff for handling the powerdev group).

Ok, I just re-used it as I had to use it before with the old HAL stuff.

I noticed my previously posted PolicyKit.conf was invalid XML by a

I guess message: System policy prevents shutting down is not
really what I want.

With an empty PolicyKit.conf I get no output at all from polkit-auth.

it might be related too. Which Xfce packages versions do you have?

I use gdm, but I can reproduce this with both startx and

With gdm it should work fine. Could you try ck-list-sessions and report

Without gdm, it seems that you need libpam-ck-connector. Could you
install it, log out and log back in, then start xfce (using startxfce4
or startx /usr/bin/startxfce4). And retry ck-list-sessions as well as
the shutdown stuff.

I hope it'll fix your problem. If it does, we'll add a recommends on
xfce4-session for this one.

It did for me, sort of.

After installing libpam-ck-connector, ck-list-sessions actually
recognises the session and prints it.

But with a plain PolicyKit.conf I still couldn't shutdown/reboot my
system. I had to uncomment the content of the posted PolicyKit.conf to
get it working. After that, polkit-auth listed the shutdown and reboot
actions and shutting down the system from Xfce actually worked.

Why did the *kit guys make things so complicated?

The remaining questions are:
- Shouldn't it work a bit more out of the box, also for users without
any fancy display manager?
- Is it worth forwarding this bug to the consolekit/policykit packages
to get some more input?

I don't feel like adding this to Geany directly as this is
Debian-specific and we are trying to keep as distro-clean as we can.
Anyway, attached is a small patch which adds parsing of the Package
and Source keywords for Debian's control files.
I leave it up to Damián to include this patch or some improved version
into the Debian package.

This support could also be used with .changes files and similar, e.g.:

$ dpkg-buildpackage

I'd say it should be
debc 1.conf geany 1.conf; rm 1.conf

Are you goging to fosdem? Then I can buy you a beer for the great Geany

Unfortunately not, maybe next year. Give the beer to one of the Xfce

Bug#503391: Please clarify a little

Hi, thanks for your report! Could you please clarify how do you
reproduce this step by step?

I've tried:

  1) mount -t tmpfs -o size=4k none /mnt/tmp/
  2) cd /mnt/tmp cat /usr/share/common-licenses/GPL-2 file
  3) geany file
  4) add some text at the end
  5) hit save
  6) quit

Result: the file had the same content as before opening it with geany,
in other words, the added text wasn't saved at all

Last time I worked on this issue, I was able to reproduce it. Damián,
it might be you can't reproduce it because of tmpfs, IIRC it resizes
itself if needed. At least I remember I used ramfs for testing.
Anyway, we already discussed this issue in detail, see
the (full) discusson in
http://lists.uvena.de/pipermail/geany/2008-April/003203.html

So, this is not new.
The only usable solution would be to rename the actual file for
backup, try to save the contents of the text buffer, and delete the
backup file on success, or move it back if writing the file has failed
(also explained in the above mentioned thread).
Well, this is what actually most Gnome apps do and maybe others as
well. But it has a big downside: it (can) break file permissions and it
will break hard links in any case.
This is why I don't like this way.

Expected result: an error dialog when hitting the save button

This is in fact a bug, but it didn't destroy the working document nor
my personal settings (this last however can be because my .geany file
was in another non-tmpfs partition).

I agree with Damián, it shouldn't destroy your personal settings
whatever this could mean. It only destroys the file you are trying to
save.

The most easy workaround is to avoid getting into the case of a full
disk and/or using the backupcopy plugin with a backup path on another
partition (as also mentioned in the thread on the Geany list).
The backup copy plugin is now part of the Save Actions plugin available
in Geany 0.15.

There is nothing special about the users or environment. I can

When pressing Ctrl-d the VTE (the internal terminal widget) is just

This is exactly the same code as when you choose 'Restart terminal'

It might also be related to your shell's config.

Thanks and hope we can squash this one soon :)

Damián Viano

But regardless of whether this is a bug or actually intended behaviour,
you can easily workaround this by using a clipboard manager like Xfce's
clipman which saves the current selection and so you can paste it
everywhere even if the previous selection doesn't exist anymore. I
really suggest to use it as it makes your life much easier and you
most probably will start to love it after ten minutes of using it :).

Since SVN r2596, Geany forces using tabs for indentation in Makefiles.

tabs, and don't explicitly tell it you are dealing with a makefile,
it mangles things by using spaces rather than tabs. It would be nice

this happens also when the file was recognized as a Makefile. But
can simply change the indent type per file with Document-Indent
Type-Tabs.
Maybe this get improved in the future to force Tab indentation for
Makefiles.

if it could recognise a rules file by the shebang line.

I just added shebang detection for make in current SVN version. So,
Debian's rules files are detected as Makefiles.

But you can also achieve this by changing the filetype extensions.
Create a file ~/.geany/filetype_extensions.conf and add the following
two lines:

[Extensions]
Make=*.mak;*.mk;GNUmakefile;makefile;Makefile;makefile.*;Makefile.*;rules;

(note the last pattern rules, details about this can be found in the
manual)

Then restart Geany and it should detect the rules file as a Makefile.

Enrico

Yes, I can. With fluxbox from sid (1.0.0+deb1-6), and is an
already reported bug, and fixed in upstream git repository.

I see, tried and sucessfully reproduced with fluxbox, too.

Attached is a modified version of your patch which adds
ui_window_present() as a wrapper for gtk_window_present(). And it

This approach was cleaner indeed, anyway is not necessary
now. However the changes of gtk_widget_show for gtk_window_present
might be worth to include to let the WM now that this dialogs should
get attention, maybe? I think it makes sense.

Committed thanks, at least the Open File dialog had the
gtk_window_present () call long time ago but then somehow it got
replaced by gtk_widget_show () ;-).

My only question is: was Brandon using fluxbox also or is
this same bug is present in other window managers? Brandon, could you
 comment?

Yeah, feedback would be great. Maybe Brandon used an older version of
Gnome/Metacity as it also had this bug in the past.

It doesn't happen with the SVN version of xfwm4 (I'm using it and

Now I hear you asking: OK, but it is very easy to fix; why did you

Indeed, it's easy to fix but you still need to know what's going wrong.
However, the good news is that the described bug only affects users
who previously once changed the build command so that it got written in
the user's config. If it was never changed manually an upgrade won't
break anything as the default build command gets also updated.

What do you suggest to solve the problem?
It's not really possible anymore, IMO. Unfortunately, I missed to note
that in the release announcement, not sure if it would have changed
anything.

 I noticed that the
executable was running with another values for the parameters, and it
 was driving me bananas :-)

I'm sorry for the trouble it caused :(.

wrote:

So, what is the default build command now? Maybe it is better than my
 current one :-)

Yes, I changed the default build command to add the -g3 -lm flags.
The funny thing is that the upgrade kept my modification (the -g3
-lm flags) but destroyed the part that was inside the default
command (-o %e). If it were the other way round, it would be as
usual, but this way is strange...

No, this is what it is intended to be. If it were the other way round,
users would have problems when they upgrade Geany.

I missed in the last mail to go into more detail about the change:
In Geany 0.13 and before, the default build command was:
gcc -Wall %f
the necessary -o name arguments were added by Geany automatically.
Since Geany 0.14, the -o argument has to be specified explicitly in the
build command, so the new default build command is:
gcc -Wall -o %e %f

This way the build command is much more flexible and can be used also
with other compilers which don't have the -o option or use it in a
different way.

What do you suggest to solve the problem?
It's not really possible anymore, IMO.

On the one hand, can't the mismatch between the gcc output and the
 execution script be fixed?.

Not really. By default there is no mismatch and so there is nothing to
be fixed. It only affects users who manually changed the build command
before Geany 0.14.
Fixing it would require detecting the problem and this would add the
possibility of detecting the mismatch falsely and so break the user's
build command although it was working before. Then we would have a real
regression.

On the other hand, I would suggest the upload of a new revision to
prevent the bug from affecting sid users that have not upgraded geany
yet, and before this version of geany migrates to testing.

Ok, this is up to Damián if he wants to add some patches or anything for
the Debian package.
But I don't think we will release anything new upstream because of this.

  Unfortunately, I missed to note
that in the release announcement, not sure if it would have changed
  anything.

I am not sure about the effectiveness of this. Nobody reads the
release notes, because it is actually impossible because of the
limitation of 24 hours per day :-)

Yes but if I had done so I simply could say: read the release notes,
there were a warning ;-).

There is a GDB plugin for use with Geany 0.13 and above.

Long lines scroll slowly. Specifically, lines which are much larger
than can be shown on one screen. I think that geany is rendering text
 that is not shown.
This is not really a bug in Geany. IMO this isn't a bug at all.
The difference in rendering time of long lines between demo_town.lua
and demo_town.txt is just because for the text file no syntax
highlighting is used at all.
Furthermore, syntax highlighting in Geany is done with the Scintilla
editing component which is embedded in Geany.
If this really is an issue, report a bug at Scintilla's bug tracker[1]
please.
