However, that's not a good reason to break layering. Regarding the use-case, indeed it's not possible to 'sort by installation date', but logs should be enough to remember what program(s) was/were installed recently. Specifically, Cupt logs store all package changes (done by libcupt) for 2 years by default, and logs can be either read by human or a specific log parser. I don't think it will be possible to deal with more than one scheme simultaneously unless apt-listbugs decide to drop any feedback checks (i.e. parsing other user preferences). Yes, that's what I meant. > I am not sure that this could work well: what if a user manually > modifies the package-manager-specific configuration, without updating > the package-manager-agnostic configuration accordingly? I was under impression that it's possible not to mix modes. Different schemes are inconsistent from the very beginning, they disagree on almost everything even if there would be no configuration files. I imagined it as 'if apt is installed, run in apt mode, forget about any non-apt schemes as if they don't exist', 'if say (cupt) is installed, run in cupt mode, forget about any non-cupt schemes as if they don't exist'. > It's not much lack of willingness to implement the changes, even though > I may admit that time is a bit scarce down here, and I would prefer to > consume it in fixing apt-listbugs own bugs, rather than in adding code > that could create more problems than the ones it is intended to > solve... Of course. I understand your position. Things will don't change until the archive freeze, let's see if I can figure something by that time. For the design point of view, it could be so that utilities like apt-listbugs work with the own state file with an own format in a package-manager-agnostic way, and for each package manager there is a tiny submodule which converts that file/data to a package-manager-specific configuration file every time the state file/data changes. For that to work, utilities should not change its behavior depending on the other (user) preferences, which I believe would be better. But that's my humble opinion. -- Eugene V. Exactly, with one remark that even for soft dependencies or alternatives it's not absolutely "prevented", but for example they may be suggested if user explicitly rejects all better solutions. I actually like this behavior more than apt-based' package manager ones'. One more warning is maybe worth implementing in the user interface, but that's it. That would be a nice workaround to do for the short future. As for exact default value of the number, for the APT the result is explicit version exclusion from the selection process, I'd suggest place ever lesser value, like -10. Still it will work only for the absolute majority of cases in Cupt, not all. > Mh... > This looks like much more work than it would appear at a first > glance... :-( Indeed I was too optimistic. I think that not the much would not be needed in the logic. Specifically, 0) create a variable for a package manager used (apt or cupt or something else if ever needed); 1) substitute '/etc/apt/preferences' string across all the code by a variable (which is a good to do anyway just for refactoring), which will be filled depending on package manager used; 2) debian/apt_preferences.rb: lines 55-68 are "changed" (i.e. covered in if/else) in cupt mode to place all available versions (not candidate one) to 'pack_with_vers'. Should be something like 7-10 new lines of code. That's because I don't plan to derive from the APT syntax where is not needed. 'Package' line will be the same and there is no problem to support 'Explanation' line. Thus aptcleanup file should require zero changes except of 1) above. > But what about (A)? What if a package is pinned for Apt, but not for > Cupt? Or vice-versa? Please remember that configuration files may be > edited by hand by the (super-)user, hence it may always happen that a > package is pinned for one package manager, but not for the other one... That's a hardest part I guess. I'd suggest not to mix different schemes and run the package manager part two times for each mode (if both are installed; if some of them is not installed, don't call the function with respective parameters). > In conclusion, I am not happy to hear that you are considering the idea > to make Cupt use a distinct pinning mechanism, and stop sharing pinning > preferences with Apt/Aptitude. That's fully understable. No one will be the happy of the change itself, but I want a priority system which is suitable for the full-case resolver (APT's one is not). This will allow me to make resolver a bit better for some usual cases. Also I want a priority system which Cupt users can rely on. > I think it would be much better, if Cupt could continue using the same > pinning preferences as Apt/Aptitude (that is to say the ones found > in /etc/apt/preferences). I can understand that Cupt implements a > different resolver, and has therefore different needs, but, IMHO, it > should try hard to re-use the settings found in /etc/apt/preferences . I tried in the start, but I know for the some time already that it cannot work how I want, and I will switch sooner or later. See also http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/pkgreport.cgi?include=subject%3Apin;package=apt; and specifically http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=554773. Back to the my proposal, indeed it requires more work that I thought, and I will understand if you won't want to implement the changes. Thanks for consideration in any case. -- Eugene V. True. That happened becaeuse of the mix of several reasons. First and main of them is Cupt's resolver always consider all versions, which is considered a feature. I can add a feature to stop considering version with some priority less than X for installing, but -40 is still too "big" for Cupt's resolver to satisfy the 'forget this version' rule (i.e. third reason). Second is: Cupt does not support APT preferences fully, some parts of the specification is, in my opinion, misleading or ambiguous or even disagree with APT's own behavior. Third is: even some clear parts of APT preferences are not supported since they are not designed for resolver which may consider more than one version to install. Conclusion: Your use case shows to me one more time that the current half-support situation is a mess and Cupt cannot use APT pinning system reliably. This is probably a time to drop APT pinning system support altogether and roll something that Cupt users can rely on. -- Eugene V. Thanks. :) :) Just for the record, not that I was against a high-level package manager do these additional things, what I did (and do) not like is the inconsistent behavior: 'iW' state was enough for Depends, but not enough for Pre-Depends. That clearly sounded like a bug so I reported it. If that discussion was started today, I'd probably vote for the disabling that "trigger care" in dpkg altogether for all dependencies. That would probably break '--no-triggers' in some high-level package manager instantly, but then the proper, therightwayish™ implementation could be rolled. But after all, this case is finally coming to the end, which is good. Theoretically dpkg can receive a new option to disable the trigger care entirely, but I don't expect someone will be interested to do that. -- Eugene V. Current Debian package does not run that test suite in the Debian package build because it depends on Ruby, I didn't want it in the Build-Depends. Maybe that could be revisited. Also, that mean I will not able to check how it works on Debian/kFreeBSD porterboxes. I will modify the package and hope for the best (and for bug reports if any). -- Eugene V. And moreover, as I checked recently, at least in Debian even root cannot mount bindfs entities from /etc/fstab if fuse is not installed (I guess, because of missing /sbin/mount.fuse, I failed to find any more detailed logs than the standard error message from mount(8)). Still without the the 'fuse' package installed root can mount and umount bindfs from the command line, so we can try to downgrade fuse to Recommends on Linux. But probably there is not much point to do that. Then, to kFreeBSD... > >Does bindfs hardcode "fusermount" and attempt to run this command? Martin said the answer is "no", then, Robert, I understand your answer is apart from fusermount binary fuse4bsd provides the same functionality as fuse on Linux? Is so, fuse4bsd [kfreebsd-any] go to the same Depends line, i.e. the original choice #1. For actual pre-testing, I don't have Debian/kFreeBSD installs and Debian kfreebsd porterboxes don't have libfuse-dev to compile bindfs so it requires some additional requests/time. Robert, if you happen to have the possibility and willingness to run bindfs's test suite somewhere soon, great, otherwise I'll modify the package and try it myself afterwards. -- Eugene V. Bug#633388: cupt: please handle upgrades skipping a release better D
[ dropped debian-dpkg, since the question is on the level higher, as Jonathan IIRC pointed already in threads on debian-dpkg@ ] Hi Jonathan, John and Sara, On 2011-07-09 20:12, John D. That's possible to implement in Cupt. I'm however not very enthusiastic to do it. Mainly, I don't think this is the only problem with the upgrades skipping a release -- what about skipped important maintainer scripts? And skipped transitions through package renames? Secondly, non-pure Debian systems with third-party packages, which also have their archives/release. In this case it's not possible to specify one 'base release'. Thirdly, every additional constraint in dependencies makes it harder to generate good/safe upgrade sequences. > >He made a prototype using tsort to order the packages being upgraded > >and (iiuc) it worked ok. I will probably accept a patch doing that change given it's fully optional, not adding too much code and is isolated (i.e. ideally, patch adds a optional function call(s) somewhere in __fill_graph_dependencies() and __fill_action_dependencies() in lib/src/internal/worker/packages.cpp. There should look anyone who would want to implement this feature on the base of libcupt. I am not sure it's worth to implement. Regarding John and Sara's proof of concept -- as I understand this was a pair of scripts -- one Makefile and second shell one. I have to say I don't understand anything what's going on there, especially the end of Makefile is write-only language to me. I can only ask if that system works for Essential/pseudo-Essential packages and cyclic dependencies as their handling can be tricky. Also I didn't see any handling of Conflicts/Breaks, maybe I missed something. Now, moving to some John and Sara's... > But this is serious. /var/lib/dpkg/available clearly shows debian I don't think you should use /var/lib/dpkg/available as a repository. I am not sure does it serve any real purpose these days, for example on my system it show ~1600 package names while in the Debian repository there are over 35000. > apt / dpkg themselves use Depends where the SHOULD have used > Pre-depends (ex, libc6). That would mean we should, by debian > policy, orphan apt and dpkg for insisting to use the current policy > incorrectly :) Err, this is a hard statement. I don't quite understand the reasoning, but if you think you find a grave bug in Debian's policy/dpkg/apt you should bring this to maintainers of relevant packages. > Let me read cupt before sticking my foot in my mouth, I haven't yet :) For what concerns your proposal, Cupt's algorithm to generate a package changes order is much different to libapt's one. It should come with a next patch release. Debugging cupt downloader bugs is always hard, and it sounds like a task for a hacking hours on a porter machines. I'll dedicate some time in future for this. Here's some tips which may or may not help you if you decide to try digging into: - use '-o debug::downloader=yes'; - print out the received parameter list just before internal errors are shown; - study receiveSocketMessage() and sendSocketMessage() functions to find out how do messages flow between download worker process and download clients, maybe the error is located there; - thing which hangs is most probably that background download process (worker()), would be nice to know where it hangs. -- Eugene V.
