Bug#670687: maybe things should be different

On another level, I even think that those other 2 commands should go, in favor of NEW -v1 and NEW -v2 respectively, since they are simply more verbose forms of the same. What you thiink? +1 to stay with the old behaviour. As a matter of fact, I've downgraded to v2 for the time being. Bug#492683: checkinstall: messes up man pages when doing Compressing man pages

It may be some unfortunate combinations of events. I've now set debug level to 2 in the config file and if I found similar happenings in the future, I'll send in the log. Will sending in the log file be enough? OK. I think that the log file plus the context (ie, flags used, wether the package was already installed, etc) should be all that's needed. As I wrote before, given the unreproducibility of this report, the really non-serious data loss (there is actually no loss, just a doubly compressed file), I've downgraded it to important. Can you reproduce this bug? If not, I guess we can close this bug report. Yes, please do. It was a long time ago. Thanks very much for looking into it. Please make sure you start LXDE by 'startlxde' script. And please report me however the result is. Yes, indeed. I just tested startlxde in my office pc, also running sid but amd64 and it works. I'll tried it on my i386 laptop later this evening. A couple of observations which may, or may not :-), be useful. * It seems lxsession *needs* the -e option. With just exec /usr/bin/lxsession in .xinitrc does not seg fault in this box but no X server is started either. * startlxde is in lxde-common but it's only recommended by lxsession. I don't pull in recommended packages as a rule and I simple-mindedly replaced gnome-session with lxsession in my first trial. I think I'm going to make the leap into lxde. Bug#514035: octave3.0: glpk cannot find the octave runtime libraries
Rafael Laboissiere wrote: * Thomas Weber thomas.weber.m...@gmail.com [2009-02-03 18:27]: Am Dienstag, den 03.02.2009, 18:11 +0100 schrieb Rafael Laboissiere: and: dpkg -l libglpk0 Luk, you have libglpk from experimental (4.35). Yes, this is what I suspected. It is unfortunate that this bug happens. In a perfect world that would not have been the case. I mean, since octave3.0_3.0.1-6lenny2 depends on libglpk0 = 4.29, the Octave binding for GLPK must work with libglpk0_4.35-1 (the version in experimental) but it doesn't. The problem arises because since version 4.32 of GLPK, the __glp_lib_* symbols are not exported anymore. As Andrew Makhorin explained in a message to bug-glpk [1], those symbols have never been part of the published API. He then removed them form the list of exported symbols without bumping the SOVERSION of the library. [1] http://lists.gnu.org/archive/html/bug-glpk/2008-10/msg00010.html Now, both 3.0.4 and 3.1.51 packages in Debian fail with the libglpk0 package in experimental. The problem seems to have been fixed in Mercurial [2] and we should backport it to our packages before they migrate into unstable. [2] http://hg.savannah.gnu.org/hgweb/octave/diff/aaccb1362347/src/DLD-FUNCTIONS/__glpk__.cc Thanks for your prompt replies. Yes, it must be that installing octave3.1 pulls in the newer version. Downgrading to 4.29 in sid works for both octave3.0 and 3.1. BTW, what mechanism is used to let the octave runtimes be found by the oct modules? Just want to learn a bit more. Yes, it's as you say more probably an apt-listbugs's bug. What prompted me to report to the texlive maintainers is that other texlive packages all upgrade fine, *except* texlive-latex-base. From a user's point of view, it's very difficult to understand why this one package is anomalous. Bug#492683: checkinstall: messes up man pages when doing Compressing man pages
Felipe Sateler wrote: El 28/07/08 02:48 LUK ShunTim escribió: Package: checkinstall Version: 1.6.1-8 Severity: grave Justification: causes non-serious data loss I'm not really sure if this is a grave bug... we'll leave it like this for now. Yes, I hesitated a bit when I set it. You definitely know the working of the code much better to decide. I guess this is result of filesystem translation not working properly with the newer kernels as reported previously. When checkinstall is doing Compressing man pages, it messes up the real man pages in /usr/share/man etc by re-compressing all man pages files (harmless, though) and rendering symbolic links to just an invalid .gz link. :-( Note: TRANSLATE=0 set and checkinstall invoked with root previlege. Then it shouldn't be the filesystem translation code. Yes, it shouldn't. Perhaps I did not put it clear enough. My concern is the safe behaviour of checkinstall -- during the packaging stage, it should not actually change the filesystem. I don't know if I'm correct in my understanding. No filesystem translation means (sudo) checkinstall *actually* writes files in /usr/bin, /usr/share, etc in the filesystem (not really safe as existing files may be overwritten/changed) while with file translation it does this in a temporary location, simulating the changes and is hence safe. A possible work around is to disable compressing man pages by setting COMPRESS_MAN=0. But it appears that files left by checkinstall in /usr/share/man etc are not cleaned up for the case when INSTALL=0 is set. Could you provide a more complete description of the problem, please? Hopefully with a test case. From what I gather: - Calling checkinstall without filesystem translation causes manpages to doubly compress, which breaks them. Which manpages? Package was already installed? Please post a full checkinstall log with debug enabled. I discovered the problem when I saw compressing man pages takes a lot of time but unfortunately I cannot reproduce this problem behaviour any more. :-( I use sid and regularly updates stuff. It may be some unfortunate combinations of events. I've now set debug level to 2 in the config file and if I found similar happenings in the future, I'll send in the log. Will sending in the log file be enough? Saludos, Felipe Sateler Thanks very much for answering and looking into it, ST -- -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. I saw them both dated 2006-05-10 21:23. They should be downloaded from the mirrors, though in this case the files of those names correspond to sources.list lines of deb file:///opt/ deb-repo/ and deb-src file:///opt/ repo/ Do you have valid Packages/Sources files in whatever mirror is mounted at this location(s) on your system? Steve, Now I understand. I don't have any source packages in the local repository, and hence an empty Sources.gz file. Commenting out the deb-src line in my sources.list solves the problem. Please close the bug if it's the intended behaviour of apt (or at least apt-src). It would just seem a bit harsh that the error of 1 out of many repositories should stop it from working altogether. Thanks for your time and enlightening me something more about debian. Regards, ST -- -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I've not looked at them till I got this problem. :-) I've been using apt-src update and then apt-src install to get package sources happily till very recently. Does either apt-src update or apt-get update give you an error message explaining why this Sources list would be empty? No, apt-src update produces the same error message but no error (message) from apt-get update. Right now, this doesn't really look to me like an apt-src bug. I really can't tell. I'm not well-versed in the internal working of the apt-* stuff. Are the _opt_deb-repo_binary_Packages and _opt_repo_source_Sources files generated locally or downloaded from the mirrors? I saw them both dated 2006-05-10 21:23. A wild guess would be the recent changes in sending package information (lots of .IndexDiff files in /var/lib/apt/lists) is causing the problem? Steve Langasek wrote: On Thu, Feb 23, 2006 at 11:16:59PM +0800, LUK ShunTim wrote: [snipped] Aha. Ok, this is not a bug in gliv. The invalid free happens inside scim, which is not a dependency of gliv at all. There is a known bug involving scim, in which scim and the application each cause a different version of libstdc++ to be loaded, and a limitation of the libstdc++ ABI prevents the linker from keeping them separate. This is not easily fixable in libstdc++; the solution is to upgrade all your software to use libstdc++6. Yes, that's indeed the problem. After re-configuring scim to work in XIM mode the problem with gliv disappeared. Please upgrade to the etch version of the scim packages to confirm that this fixes the problem for you. If it does, I'll go ahead and close the bug. Thanks, Thanks very much again and regards, ST -- -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? If it does then we need to solve the problem, if not then file a bug whereever you found your unsupported driver. - Jonas Thanks Jonas, but this driver is provided by debian, now. http://packages.debian.org/unstable/x11/fglrx-driver I'm not really competent enough to judge whether this problem is related to the kernel or the driver (or both) but I did not run into this problem with the older 2.6.12 kernel (driver compiled from same source using m-a). I looked at various logs and that's what I found. If it's not related to the kernel, I can file it against the driver.
