+1 to stay with the old behaviour.

As a matter of fact, I've downgraded to v2 for the time being.

Bug#672208: python-dolfin: Extension module cpp not found/built

2012-05-09 Thread LUK ShunTim
Package: python-dolfin
Version: 1.0.0-4+b2
Severity: grave
Justification: renders package unusable

Dear Maintainer,

Here's an example traceback when running the poisson equation demo.

$ python demo_poisson.py

It seems that in the current (1.0.0-4+b2) version of python-dolfin, the
extension module cpp is somehow not built. You can, for example, compare the
size of the package files as seen in snapshot.debian.org

Hi,

This is what wajig commands shows:

DESCRIBENEW
One line descriptions of new packages

NEW
List descriptions of upgradable packages

NEWDETAIL
Provide a detailed description of new packages

My understanding is describenew and newdetail should show information of
new packages, that is packages that enter into the distribution for the
first time. New should show information of packages that are installed
which have newer versions.

I'm on sid and these are the two pieces of information I found most
useful.

Thanks for looking into it. Please let me know what else can I do to
help to sort this out.

think is the expected behaviour, like the dselect.

Hi,

This version of stdeb requires python-all = 2.6.6-3, but you do not have this

was sucessfully generated. During dpkg-buildpackage it aborted at the message

Passing the option --workaround-548392=True results in

I did not install python-all as I am using python 2.6 only and don't need

OK. I think that the log file plus the context (ie, flags used, wether the
package was already installed, etc) should be all that's needed.

As I wrote before, given the unreproducibility of this report, the really
non-serious data loss (there is actually no loss, just a doubly compressed
file), I've downgraded it to important.

Can you reproduce this bug? If not, I guess we can close this bug report.

Yes, please do. It was a long time ago.
Thanks very much for looking into it.

I guess you probably start lxde session by 'lxsession'. Please make sure
you start LXDE by 'startlxde' script. And please report me however the
 result is.

Yes, indeed. I just tested startlxde in my office pc, also running sid
but amd64 and it works. I'll tried it on my i386 laptop later this
evening.

A couple of observations which may, or may not :-), be useful.

* It seems lxsession *needs* the -e option. With just exec
/usr/bin/lxsession in .xinitrc does not seg fault in this box but no X
server is started either.

* startlxde is in lxde-common but it's only recommended by
lxsession. I don't pull in recommended packages as a rule and I
simple-mindedly replaced gnome-session with lxsession in my first
trial.

I think I'm going to make the leap into lxde. Is there any user mailing
list for lxde, BTW?

Hi,

While it seems that setting PETSC_DIR, PETSC_ARCH and PETSC_LIB_DIR works
around the problem when petsc alone is used, slepc is *still unusable* even
when SLEPC_DIR and SLEPC_LIB_DIR are set as well.

Sorry, I'm unable to reproduce this problem - it works fine on squeeze
(and Ubuntu intrepid which I had to hand).

I don't really see what could be going wrong either - /usr/lib/python2.4
should be a directory, and appears to be in both packages.

What version of python-profiler do you have installed? This command
 will tell you:

 dpkg -s python-xapian|grep ^Version

Version: 1.0.7-3.1

Perhaps it is worth checking that /usr/lib/python2.4 is actually a
directory on your file system (but if it has somehow got replaced by a
file, I'd imagine you'd have seen other consequences):

 ls -ld /usr/lib/python2.4

Yes, it's a directory.

 Cheers,
 Olly

I uninstalled python-profiler and installed it again, installed
aptitude-gtk (which depends on python-xapian) and things went smoothly.
Yes, the error is not reproduced.

Thanks very much for looking into it and sorry for taking up your time.

Luk, you have libglpk from experimental (4.35).

Yes, this is what I suspected.

It is unfortunate that this bug happens. In a perfect world that would not
have been the case. I mean, since octave3.0_3.0.1-6lenny2 depends on
libglpk0 = 4.29, the Octave binding for GLPK must work with libglpk0_4.35-1
(the version in experimental) but it doesn't.

The problem arises because since version 4.32 of GLPK, the __glp_lib_*
symbols are not exported anymore. As Andrew Makhorin explained in a message
to bug-glpk [1], those symbols have never been part of the published API.
He then removed them form the list of exported symbols without bumping the
 SOVERSION of the library.

 [1] http://lists.gnu.org/archive/html/bug-glpk/2008-10/msg00010.html

Now, both 3.0.4 and 3.1.51 packages in Debian fail with the libglpk0 package
in experimental. The problem seems to have been fixed in Mercurial [2] and
we should backport it to our packages before they migrate into unstable.

Thanks for your prompt replies.

Yes, it must be that installing octave3.1 pulls in the newer version.
Downgrading to 4.29 in sid works for both octave3.0 and 3.1.

BTW, what mechanism is used to let the octave runtimes be found by the
oct modules? Just want to learn a bit more.

Thanks again,

Do you reassign that bug or should I do?

Hi Norbert,

Yes, please do. A DD's word may carry more weight. :-)

I cannot care for programs that do interpret 2007-14 wrongly.

Yes, it's as you say more probably an apt-listbugs's bug. What prompted
me to report to the texlive maintainers is that other texlive packages
all upgrade fine, *except* texlive-latex-base. From a user's point of
view, it's very difficult to understand why this one package is anomalous.

2008-09-20 Thread LUK ShunTim
Package: texlive-latex-base
Version: 2007.dfsg.1-3

When upgrading texlive-latex-base and using apt-listbugs to check bugs, it
chokes the whole installation process with this error:

Error retrieving bug reports from the server with the following error message:

or the BTS server itself is down. Check network configuration and try again

While it appears to be caused by apt-listbugs treating the fixed-version

install/upgrade without encountering such problems.

Please take a look.

Bug#492683: checkinstall: messes up man pages when doing Compressing man pages

Felipe Sateler wrote:
El 28/07/08 02:48 LUK ShunTim escribió:

I'm not really sure if this is a grave bug... we'll leave it like this for
 now.

Yes, I hesitated a bit when I set it. You definitely know the working of
the code much better to decide.

I guess this is result of filesystem translation not working properly with
the newer kernels as reported previously.

When checkinstall is doing Compressing man pages, it messes up the real
man pages in /usr/share/man etc by re-compressing all man pages files
(harmless, though) and rendering symbolic links to just an invalid .gz
link. :-( Note: TRANSLATE=0 set and checkinstall invoked with root
 previlege.

Then it shouldn't be the filesystem translation code.

Yes, it shouldn't.

Perhaps I did not put it clear enough. My concern is the safe behaviour
of checkinstall -- during the packaging stage, it should not actually
change the filesystem. I don't know if I'm correct in my understanding.
No filesystem translation means (sudo) checkinstall *actually* writes
files in /usr/bin, /usr/share, etc in the filesystem (not really safe as
existing files may be overwritten/changed) while with file translation
it does this in a temporary location, simulating the changes and is
hence safe.

A possible work around is to disable compressing man pages by setting
COMPRESS_MAN=0. But it appears that files left by checkinstall in
/usr/share/man etc are not cleaned up for the case when INSTALL=0 is set.

Could you provide a more complete description of the problem, please?
Hopefully with a test case. From what I gather:

  - Calling checkinstall without filesystem translation causes manpages to
 doubly compress, which breaks them.

Which manpages? Package was already installed? Please post a full
 checkinstall
 log with debug enabled.

I discovered the problem when I saw compressing man pages takes a lot of
time but unfortunately I cannot reproduce this problem behaviour any
more. :-( I use sid and regularly updates stuff. It may be some
unfortunate combinations of events. I've now set debug level to 2 in the
config file and if I found similar happenings in the future, I'll send
in the log. Will sending in the log file be enough?

Hello,

The library files (lib*.so) are somehow missing from binary package.
The size of the package is only 9460 bytes. You can also see it on

FWIW, apt-getting the source and building it locally doesn't have this problem.

There is no 2.6.23.

Hello,

Thanks for the information. I can live with it. :-) Just like to
understand the reason behind as it makes the headers uninstallable and
modules can't be built the debian way. Is it a policy for experimental
kernels?

I believe petsc 2.3.3-1 now builds, since the new suitesparse and
openmpi were uploaded. Can you please try to build it and see if it
 installs properly?

Unfortunately, I can't force the buildds to retry building it, so I
don't know when it will enter unstable.

 Thanks,

Hello,

Unfortunately, it doesn't. :-(. I did the usual thing, ie.

apt-get source petsc
sudo apt-get build-dep petsc
cd /path/to/petsc-2.2.3
fakeroot -u dpkg-buildpackage -us -uc

It didn't get very far. The error message is short so I include it in
full. Not very helpful I guess. :-(

Hi Luk, thanks for your answer, it's really useful. It seems that

Please, can you attach your ~/.xsession-errors file so I can test a

Hello Fernando,

Unfortunately, before I saw your mail, I deleted the file because I
thought maybe it's causing the problem and indeed I was able to invoke
bugbuddy successfully afterwards. Up to this moment, no new
.xsession-errors was generated though the problem of nautilus crashing
still continues. :-(

I guess the bug can be closed (for the time being) and I'll report back
if I encounter it again.

Bug#410883: Linking libufsparse.so requires explicit linking of BLAS and C math libraries

2007-02-14 Thread LUK ShunTim
Package: libufsparse
Version: 1.2-7
Severity: important

Hello,

The current build of libufsparse.so requires explicit linking with BLAS and the
C math library when it is used. The result of compiling umfpack_di_demo.c
without such explicit linking showed:

quote
$ gcc -I/usr/include/ufsparse -o umfpack_di_demo umfpack_di_demo.c \

It'd be much more convenient for the user if such dependency is automatically
taken care of so that just linking with libufsparse is sufficient.

Yes, I got it from alioth. I think that's the problem.

latex-cjk used to be one package which contained
 everything.

The name latex-cjk is now a virtual package which will
install *all* other subpackages. These subpackages
are: latex-cjk- chinese, japanese, korean, thai, common.

If this is indeed the problem, then I will upload a new
version ASAP that will conflict with earlier versions
 of latex-cjk.

I can't currently check out my own packages because of a
 broken computer. :-/

 I hope this helps.

Hello,

Glxgears shows around 220-230 FPS after upgrading (ie, fglrx 8.28 and xorg
7.1.0) but used to be around 2610 FPS, with fglrx 8.24.8 and xorg 7.0. I did not
checked Xorg.0.log then.

I'm not that knowledgeable to distinguish clearly between dri and Acceleration
in capital as you mentioned (Please point me to some explanation for my
learning.) but I think this bug, if it is one, would impair X applications that
uses dri.

Thanks for looking into this,

They should be downloaded from the mirrors, though in this case the files
of those names correspond to sources.list lines of

   deb file:///opt/ deb-repo/

 and

   deb-src file:///opt/ repo/

Do you have valid Packages/Sources files in whatever mirror is mounted at
 this location(s) on your system?

Steve,

Now I understand. I don't have any source packages in the local
repository, and hence an empty Sources.gz file. Commenting out the
deb-src line in my sources.list solves the problem.

Please close the bug if it's the intended behaviour of apt (or at least
apt-src). It would just seem a bit harsh that the error of 1 out of many
repositories should stop it from working altogether.

Thanks for your time and enlightening me something more about debian.

Shouldn't you be using apt-*get* update to manage the files in
 /var/lib/apt/lists?

I really don't know. I've not looked at them till I got this problem. :-) I've
been using apt-src update and then apt-src install to get package sources
happily till very recently.

Does either apt-src update or apt-get update give you an error message
explaining why this Sources list would be empty?

No, apt-src update produces the same error message but no error (message) from
apt-get update.

Right now, this doesn't really look to me like an apt-src bug.

A wild guess would be the recent changes in sending package information (lots of
.IndexDiff files in /var/lib/apt/lists) is causing the problem?

Running apt-src install package_name fails with this message
Unable to parse package file /var/lib/apt/lists/_opt_deb-repo_source_Sources

It appears that the file /var/lib/apt/lists/_opt_deb-repo_source_Sources is
empty.
I tried removing it and ran apt-src update but just an empty
_opt_deb-repo_source_Sources is generated.

Aha. Ok, this is not a bug in gliv. The invalid free happens inside scim,
which is not a dependency of gliv at all. There is a known bug involving
scim, in which scim and the application each cause a different version of
libstdc++ to be loaded, and a limitation of the libstdc++ ABI prevents the
 linker from keeping them separate.  This is not easily fixable in libstdc++;
the solution is to upgrade all your software to use libstdc++6.

Yes, that's indeed the problem. After re-configuring scim to work in XIM mode
the problem with gliv disappeared.

Please upgrade to the etch version of the scim packages to confirm that this
fixes the problem for you. If it does, I'll go ahead and close the bug.

 Thanks,

Thanks very much again and regards,

could either compress it or put it somewhere on the web and only refer
 to it with a URL.

I *have* thought about all these options and I've chosen this course
action which IMO is reasonable, under the current circumstances. And I'm
sure package maintainers would provide sufficient information to the bug
list after the investigation.

Your opinion is noted and this will be the last you hear (directly) from
me on this topic. Thank you for your patience and

good day,

downgrading severity as kernel-package doesn't yet build with debsums.

can you please tell how you hooked debsums into your image?
perhaps you are invoking debsums in apt's post install hook?
or in the kernels post install hook?

I believe not only non-free, but also unsupported.

If possible then try switching to a driver provided with Debian and see
if the problem persists. If it does then we need to solve the problem,
if not then file a bug whereever you found your unsupported driver.

Thanks Jonas, but this driver is provided by debian, now.
http://packages.debian.org/unstable/x11/fglrx-driver

I'm not really competent enough to judge whether this problem is related
to the kernel or the driver (or both) but I did not run into this
problem with the older 2.6.12 kernel (driver compiled from same source
using m-a). I looked at various logs and that's what I found. If it's
not related to the kernel, I can file it against the driver.

Thanks very much again,

Package: linux-image-2.6.15-rc5-686

Severity: critical
Justification: breaks the whole system

After installing linux-image-2.6.15-rc5-686 and rebooting, I got errors similar
to that reported in bug #343048, that is

However, the strange thing is when I invoke reportbug to report it, I got these
bunch of checksum errors
