Both come from the same upstream author but are handled by different Debian Teams and maintainers (Perl and Tex teams respectively). Fortunately, the situation is easy to fix by either downgrading biber package version (to the latest official 0.9.9 version) or upgrading biblatex to the 2.0 beta version. I have tested both scenarios and both of them work fine. How to reproduce the bug In the current Sid scenario take a latex-biber document and perform: pdflatex file.tex biber file pdflatex file.tex and you will obtain the following error at the 2nd latex invocation: ! Bug#484081: Bug#465635: NMU of latex-cjk-chinese-arphic
Hi Norbert! Op 10-06-08 12:19, schreef Norbert Preining: since these two RC bugs are open since quite some time I took the liberty to prepare an NMU. It basically takes the patch for parallel build fix from the bug log, and for the other includes the SFD files simply into debian/sfd, so no build-dependency over freetype1-tools. I have built the packages without any problems (but the time ;-) and did install and did also some test runs. Oops, stop the presses! (Heheh.) There is a problem with the GSUB part of the simplified Chinese fonts. This is what I get in my own logs: fontforge -script vertical.pe gbsn00lp.ttf gbsnuv Copyright (c) 2000-2008 by George Williams. Executable based on sources from 16:34 GMT 30-Mar-2008. Library based on sources from 15:57 GMT 30-Mar-2008. Loading gbsn00lp.ttf... Bad lookup table: format=6, first=65535 total glyphs in font=7764 No vertical glyph representation forms found. Check Werner Lemberg's postings a few months ago, and see what the problem was with Arphic's GSUB tables (does it even contain them?). I haven't yet figured out how to deal with this; the only quick solution is to provide the files myself, but then that's cheating, and then I could just try to get the fonts from TeXlive instead of bothering to compile the fonts. Without the gbsnuv* and gkaiuv* files, vertical rotation doesn't work. I don't see a problem with resepct to kpathsea/dh_installtex as you mentioned it in the one bug log. I attach the debdiff of the current package to the one I plan to upload. Note that the debdiff does NOT (!!!) contain the sfd files, I removed that, since otherwise the diff would be so big. Please give your remarks, otherwise I plan to upload this package to the N-DELAYED queue (I still have to check which one it should got to for RC bugs). Is it possible to add the .sfd in a texlive-* package? It's included in TeXlive upstream (http://tug.org/svn/texlive/trunk/Master/texmf/fonts/sfd/). That is a conditio sine qua non to get extra fonts working with CJK. If you say so, I trust it is true. But funny thing is those people who is pushing FT2 transition did NMU with success. I see PS/PDF files OK. (I do not know .sfd files... is this Spline Font Database? In what process these are used? What happens without it?) .sfd files are subfont definition files and are stored on $TEXMF(LOCAL)/fonts/sfd/. They contain the code ranges of CJK encodings such as Big5, JIS X 0208, Unicode, DNP, etc. You need these .sfd files when you wish to convert (CJK) TrueType fonts to either TFM/PK or to PFA/PFB fonts. Hence the Build-Depends for latex-cjk-chinese-arphic and -japanese-wadalab. Serious users of CJK need the .sfd files if they wish to get their own fonts working with CJK. They will also need the ttf2* binaries if they do it the old but fast way (the new way uses Fontforge scripts, but takes a long time and you still need the .sfd files; ask my sponsors Frank and Norbert ;))). So if you don't mind, I will downgrade the severity of this bug to wishlist, and remove the patch tag. Please from me. Ok. P.S.: as for DDP, I'm currently testing xCJK, which will be included in a next upload of latex-cjk-*, which has XeLaTeX support. It supports TTF directly, so you won't have any of these font problems anymore. I'm trying out several DFSG-free fonts now, to see which ones are good enough to recommend. I have updated debiandoc-sgml to support UTF-8 as long as we get proper LaTex header files for each languages. HTML and Plain text are fully functional. Ok. After xCJK is proved to work correctly for everyone on Debian, I'll submit a few changes to get Korean working again. One thing I worry is ghostscript for CJK. Does it require presense of CID font support data which is non-free? No, I don't think so. xCJK can embed the Type1 subfonts in the PDF or PS files, and haven't noticed any CID requirement. A tool like ttf2tfm is used in quite a lot of scripts. It is extremely fast to handle TrueType fonts, but it will produce only subfonts of mediocre quality (and it will create PK fonts every time you use a glyph from a yet unused table of the TTF, littering your ~/.texmf/ directory). Although I strongly promote the use of Fontforge (or XeLaTeX, that I have recently discovered), I would still suggest to keep the freetype1-tools package for people who use some of the HOWTO's or scripts found on several CJK websites (such as the script by Edward Lee). Removing freetype1-tools wouldn't be a very great loss for me personally as a packager or user, but it might be for quite a lot of users. Bug#475659: iceowl-extension 0.8-2 still incompatible with Provider for Google Calendar v0.4

Could there be a problem with the name change on Debian (id est Lightning/Sunbird - iceowl-extension/iceowl)? Because on Windows 2000 it works like a charm. Could give me instructins how exactly you set this calendars subscription up? If you have a GMail account, open it through webmail and go to the Agenda. Now you go to the settings of one of your calendars (create one if you haven't yet), and at the bottom of the page you'll notice XML, ICAL and HTML twice. Hover over the second XML instance and copy the location of that link. When Provider for Google Calender is installed, you'll have to possibility to add this long XML link to a network calendar. The link is supposed to be private, so you can't publish it just on any website. Could you also verify that iceowl itself (vs. iceowl-extension for icedove) has the same problem? I have installed iceowl and opened it under the same username. Strangely enough it works! And the error console remains empty. So it seems to be only applicable to iceowl-extension anymore, if we're talking about the same bug from the original poster anyway. Bug#462025: latex-cjk-korean: uses deprecated HLaTeX fonts
Hi! Op 20-02-08 21:51, schreef Dohyun Kim: latex-cjk-korean, newly migrated to testing, recommends ko.tex-extra-hlfont package which regrettably contains fonts rarely used in Korea. Instead, ko.tex-base package has Myoungjo, the standard Hangul font family. Though the package name ko.tex-base does not give any hint related to fonts, it is actually ko.tex-fonts-base which has succeeded hlatex-fonts-base. So, recommendation by latex-cjk-korean should be changed to ko.tex-base. CJK provides font maps for all of the HLaTeX fonts, including dinaru and pilgia from ko.tex-extra-hlfonts and bom, gungseo, jamobatang, jamodotum, jamonovel, jamosora, pen, penheulim, pilgi, shinmun and yetgul from ko.tex-extra. I didn't check the package dependencies thoroughly; you're absolutely right. So there are two options: A) either I let latex-cjk-korean depend on ko.tex-base, ko.tex-extra and ko.tex-extra-hlfonts; B) or I split latex-cjk-korean into three, and let them each depend on the respective font package. Even though I think that option B is preferable (one of the reasons that you don't have to install every large font package), I don't have much time right now. So in the meantime I'll go for option A. Unlike the deprecated hlatex-fonts-base, however, ko.tex-base doesn't provide x, ux, bx, ubx series fonts. Good news is that we Koreans normally do not use these series. So I propose modification of font definition files to deal with this discrepancy. As an example, I modified c{63,64,64,70}mj.fd files and uploaded to my personal server: http://people.ktug.or.kr/~nomos/mine/c63mj.fd http://people.ktug.or.kr/~nomos/mine/c64mj.fd http://people.ktug.or.kr/~nomos/mine/c65mj.fd http://people.ktug.or.kr/~nomos/mine/c70mj.fd (wmj*.tfm files in c{63,64,65}mj.fd are actually virtual fonts pointing to outbtm*.tfm files indicated in c70mj.fd.) I hope the rest of Korean font definition files be modified soon. If you need any help, please let me know. That is an excellent idea! Could you post this solution to [EMAIL PROTECTED], which is the CJK mailing list? I'm sure that Werner Lemberg, the author, and the other package maintainers will be interested in this! Bug#458740: latex-cjk-chinese-arphic: please support parallel builds
Hi! I have found the bug with debian/control. The latex-cjk-chinese-arphic source builds four font packages. My predecessor had an inventive way to create several files completely automatically, hence the *.in files and the pattern substitution hocus pocus in debian/rules. This should be a piece of cake for others to build their own font packages for Debian, using only rules and *.in. During the clean: phase, the pre-clean and $(clean_fonts) targets are run first. pre-clean looks okay, since the debian/control file only has the Source stanza. Then $(clean_fonts) is run. This is a mix of: a) fonts = bsmi bkai gbsn gkai b) clean_fonts = $(addprefix clean_,$(fonts)) c) $(clean_fonts): abbrev = $(patsubst clean_%,%,$@) $(clean_fonts): DH_OPTIONS = -p$(bin-package) -P$(d) $(clean_fonts): [commands to add the binary packages automatically to debian/control] My guess is that DH_OPTIONS is to blame: the new parallel option in Debhelper has now been removed and totally replaced with my own -p and -P options. Could you please try the following thing: instead of DH_OPTIONS = -p$(bin-package) -P$(d) replace it with DH_OPTIONS = $(DH_OPTIONS) -p$(bin-package) -P$(d) in the $(clean_fonts), $(install_fonts) and $(binary_fonts) targets? I think this is the root of the problem, so if you would be so kind to test this for me, please? As far as Wadalab is concerned [1], I'm not sure why debian/rules fails to work after a simple cd command. It looks like the clean target is run again after building; weird. I'll look at it later. Bug#411672: mysql-server-5.0: Incorrect file format 'host'
Here's what I did to solve it. I ran mysqld --skip-grant as root, then I logged in with mysql without any password as user root. Then I ran repair table [bla] use_frm; where [bla] represents all the names of the tables that I found in /var/lib/mysql/mysql/ (without the suffix, of course). Now my mysql users had gone, but at least mysqld starts again. Now I had to recreate two users in my database (root with supercow powers and a regular user), and then ran dpkg-reconfigure mysql-server-5.0 to configure the debian-sys-maint user. Could you please add c40song.fd (and probably c41,2,3,4song.fd) to the package? Aaah, I suggest you install latex-cjk-japanese-wadalab. This is only recommended by latex-cjk-japanese, not a hard dependency, because not all people want the Wadalab fonts installed extra, since they have their own fonts. The Wadalab fonts come with c42 and c52 font definition files. What you are referring to are c40 font definition files, and are called because you use the song font, a default name for many scripts in the CJK macro. c40, c41 and c50 point to HBF fonts, these are ugly bitmap fonts. I haven't had time yet to package them, but I would advise not to use these fonts, but stick to the much more beautiful Wadalab Type1 fonts, which are not jagged unlike the HBF. If you really want, you can install the hbf-* packages and copy the .fd files from http://git.sv.gnu.org/gitweb/?p=cjk.git;a=tree;f=texinput/JIS;h=47faf731af28e7c2bbb5ebdcb763ef138fa17f00;hb=HEAD in /usr/share/texmf/tex/latex/CJK/JIS/ and run texhash as root to let TeX know about the existance of the new files. I'm not the maintainer of the hbf-* font packages, but I do intend to take over from the original packager when I have found the time to make some drastic (internal) changes. The reason I do not include the .fd files in any of the base latex-cjk-* packages is to avoid unnecessary clobber: the base packages don't include fonts (except for -thai), so it shouldn't provide the .fd file at all. That is on my TODO list for the hbf-* packages, hopefully for August when I should have more time. I would be inclined to depend on the Wadalab fonts since 99% of the people need it, but there is this 1% that doesn't want it. And for them an 18MB large Debian package can be considered huge bloat. I'm not sure which package installer you use, but I would thoroughly recommend aptitude, which takes care of recommended packages elegantly (press 'M' to fine-tune your own dependencies). aptitude will show latex-cjk-japanese-wadalab as a recommended package, and it is advised to install this package. I hope the package description of latex-cjk-japanese is clear enough about this. BTW, I am actually running ubuntu, but the problem seems to also exist in debian, so I am filing the bug here. Thank you for your bug report in Debian. It makes life much easier for me as a maintainer to manage the bugs via one single Debian Bug Tracking System. But apparently my first guess was correct, i.e. that packages in B-D-I are there for operations that are architecture-independent, and B-D for packages with tools that process architecture-dependent files? In casu ctangle (also) produces a compiled binary. Therefore texlive-extra-utils needs to be in B-D. I'll upload a new version to my mentor today. Thanks for your report! Bug#410167: gedit: Gedit crashes when viewing source of web page with Epiphany
This strange bug still exists in libpango1.0 (1.16.4-1). I find it strange, because every program that depends on pango crashes when a (Chinese) font has its chmod set to go-r: gedit, icedove, etc. I don't actually use the Thai IM (but it is installed nonetheless, although it is said to be broken, even after so many years). Here's how I can reproduce the bug: Extract the two TTF from the .exe file at http://okuc.net/sunwb/ I've also put them here temporarily: - http://users.edpnet.be/vanmeel/Sun-ExtA.ttf - http://users.edpnet.be/vanmeel/Sun-ExtB.ttf Put them in /usr/local/share/fonts/truetype/sunext/ and chmod go-r both files. Run a Gnome program as root (such as Firestarter), in order to create cache files in /var/cache/fontconfig/. Open any program as a regular user, and open the attached .html file. It will crash eventually. The reason that it crashes, is that the file contains exotic characters only found in the SunExt fonts (unless you have a plethora of fonts installed on your computer, that is). chmod go+r SunExtA.ttf, and the crash won't happen anymore. Using a Gnome program under root will be no problem: it opens just fine, even if I set the chmod to u-r. I remember that this bug has existed for years now. If you need any more logs, I'm happy to oblige (but I'm a bit busy now, so it could take a few days to respond).
