Bug#310936: oregano fixes for ia64

2005-05-27 Thread David Mosberger-Tang

  Third, part-property.c passed a pointer to an unitialized size_t-typed
  variable to get_macro_name(), which was expecting only an int pointer.
  Thus, the top 32-bits remained unitialized and on ia64 this caused a
  crash when attempting to insert any part.

  this was fixed in 0.40.3

The problem is still present in 0.40.4. The attached patch fixes the
problem.

The other problems appear to have been fixed in 0.40.4.

Bug#309870: addititional information

2005-05-27 Thread Anton Ivanov

-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA1

Further to that.

Navigating around the web interface may cause rules from the header
section to be erased as well.

How to reproduce

1. Add a rule

2. Move to Recipeint Filters

3. Change the Require Explicit Destination from Yes to No (or vice versa)

4. Move back to SPAM rules. All rules are gone.

It looks like there list object somewhere is initialised with defaults
and not loaded correctly. Looking at it currently, but Python is
definitely not my favourite language so it takes me some time to get
this one.

I have tried quickly several likely suspects:

version check, comparison and dictionary update in versions.py - not there
timeout and optimization on loading in Mailingist.py - not there
(setting timeout to be 0 all the time and forcing a load on every
operation this way has no effect on the bug).

This may cause futher breakage other then the one I am observing.

I have now reproduced this on several machines

The dictionary load/store itself aslo looks fine and it works fine for
most cases.

Frankly no idea. I am going to try mailman-2.1.6rc4 next and see if
the bug still exists there.

Bug#255276: Patch to run database recovery on startup

2005-05-27 Thread Florian Weimer
The patch is risky. After it's been applied, invoking
/etc/init.d/slapd start while slapd is running can (and most
probably will) result in data loss.

db4.2_recover -e will pick up new DB_CONFIG settings, so there's no
need to special-case it for updates.

Bug#310948: curl fails when HTTP response headers contain null bytes

2005-05-27 Thread Eric Cooper
Package: curl
Version: 7.13.2-2
Severity: important

Some broken HTTP servers return response headers containing null bytes.
For example:
http://ftp.pl.debian.org/debian/dists/sarge/main/binary-i386/Packages.gz
(at least until the webmaster fixes it).

When curl is parsing header lines, it reads a buffer and then looks
for the end-of-line by doing
k-end_ptr = strchr (k-str_start, '\n');
in lib/transfer.c

But this is incorrect if the buffer contains embedded nulls -- the
strchr search will terminate too soon. Then more data gets appended
to the header, the true CRLF termination is missed, and curl returns
insanely long headers which are actually part of the response data.

Here is a simple test program to reproduce the problem:

 cut here
#include stdio.h
#include stdlib.h
#include curl/curl.h

void
get_headers(char *url)
{
CURL *handle;
const int TRUE = 1;

handle = curl_easy_init();

// write headers to stdout
curl_easy_setopt(handle, CURLOPT_HEADERFUNCTION, fwrite);
curl_easy_setopt(handle, CURLOPT_WRITEHEADER, stdout);

// exit when the data arrives
curl_easy_setopt(handle, CURLOPT_WRITEFUNCTION, exit);

#if DEBUG
curl_easy_setopt(handle, CURLOPT_VERBOSE, TRUE);
#endif

curl_easy_setopt(handle, CURLOPT_URL, url);
curl_easy_setopt(handle, CURLOPT_HTTPGET, TRUE);
curl_easy_perform(handle);
}

int
main(int argc, char *argv[])
{
if (argc != 2) {
fprintf(stderr, Usage: %s URL\n, argv[0]);
exit(1);
}
get_headers(argv[1]);
return 0;
}
 cut here

Run
./ctest
http://ftp.pl.debian.org/debian/dists/sarge/main/binary-i386/Packages.gz  foo
and examine foo with hexdump or emacs to see the problem.

Here is a patch that seems to fix it, but I've only tested it with the
site above.

   The use of cifrar doesn't express the idea of
 criptography (protection). I checked the dictionaries that
 I have around here and a few ones online and encriptar
 is really wrong, it means put somebody in a crypt and
 crypt, in this case, has the same idea of Tales from
 the crypt. :))

   The dictionary points criptografar with the
 same idea of encrypt. In portuguese (specially in
 Brazilian Portuguese), sometimes a word is composed
 of two other words and sombody put it together a long
 time ago (cripto + grafar), in such cases, the word
 could inherits some characteristics, specially from
 grafar (grafia, grafado), but it took sometime until
 dicionaries uses this (specially words from technology
 field).

   The books in Brasil and our literature uses
 criptografar and its tenses and Brazilians should
 be used with this terms. :o)

Ok, good enough for me. Committed to cvs, will be uploaded shortly.

Will similar corrections be submitted against the passwd and ssh packages?

To answer myself here, I guess one advantage is that the scripts can
then specify what happens if the encode fails (replace or raise an
exception). But maybe the binding could deal with it in a sensible
way when you pass an Unicode string directly (i.e. .encode to current
locale and replace).

Bug#310952: util-vserver: vreboot location seems to be wrong

2005-05-27 Thread gary ng
Package: util-vserver
Version: 0.30.204-5
Severity: normal

It seems that the newvserver script looks for the wrong place for
vreboot in this version(it is now under legacy). As a result, it is not
copied over to the client(though I am not sure if it still works as
there seems to be some transition going on, may be it is deliberately
omitted as I can't find vshutdown in the distro at all).

Bug#310956: scons: problem with Environment.Copy

2005-05-27 Thread Frederic-Emmanuel PICCA
Package: scons
Version: 0.96.1-1
Severity: normal

Hello

the problem I found appear when I use scons on a windows XP Pro platform

Just uncompress the tar.gz file I provided in a windows machine with
scons install on it.
Go into the tmp2 directory and type scons RETURN

all I have done is creating a environment in the SConstruct file with a
PLATFORM initialized with os.name and exporting it for the SConscript
file. Then I printed env['PLATFORM']

In the SConscript I made a copy of the exported environment.
myenv = env.Copy() and then I printed the myenv['PLATFORM'].

So I need to see:

Linux:
posix
posix
.

Windows XP Pro:
nt
nt
..

but on windows I saw:
nt
win32

So it seems that the copy is not correct

Am I right ?

Have a nice day.

 I didn't know that. I didn't know that there were strict and defined by the

This is the Debian menu subpolicy.

http://www.debian.org/doc/packaging-manuals/menu-policy/ch2.html#s2.1

  2) Games used to be in Apps as you suggest, but it was moved to make the
  menu layout less deep.

 Well, I would prefer that in Apps, since it would be more organized. In the
 same fashion, I had previously asked the fluxbox maintainer to put the
 items Configuration, Styles and Workspaces in a new menu item
 entitled Fluxbox ... or something like this, with the intent to keep
 things more organized.

The argument in favour of the new layout that the menu layout is only 2-level
deep now (Apps/Editors/Emacs). With Games in Apps, it make it 3-level
deep (Apps/Games/Card/Xpatience) so it is slower to reach a program.

Of course, this assume you have some games installed, else the Games
section is useless anyway.

Bug#310955: libtext-wrapi18n-perl: Please provide a space preservation option

2005-05-27 Thread Martin Quinson
Package: libtext-wrapi18n-perl
Version: 0.06-1
Severity: wishlist

Hello,

I write to you as one of the po4a developpers. This project aims at easing
the translation of documentation using gettext in this area. Our programs
can for example take a man page, extract the strings to translate into a po
file and then (once the translator did their job) reinject the translated
strings into the man page structure. We can do so for man pages, for pod
(perl online documentation), xml, sgml, TeX and a few others. Enough for the
context, I guess.

po4a being localized itself, we use libtext-wrapi18n-perl to wrap our error
messages, but we don't use it to wrap the po file because your library is
missing a functionnality we need. In po files, all spaces are important and
newlines are not. So,
 toto
 tutu
is equivalent to
 toto tutu
but not to
 toto
 tutu
(which is equivalent to tototutu)

So, here is the purpose of this bug report: could you please add a way to
put linebreaks were needed in the sentence without removing any space (the
one at the end of the line come to mind), please?

Thanks a lot,
Mt.

Bug#310877: circular dependency libfontconfig1 -- fontconfig

 Yes, applications depend on libfontconfig1 as expected.
 The problem is that there are other non-application packages, like font
 collections, which shouldn't depend on the library as they have no
 interaction with it, but should depend on the fontconfig package as they
 need to install or change the configuration files.

 As a result, we have some packages (ttf-bitstream-vera and most other
 ttf-* packages) which depend on fontconfig, and other packages which
 depend on libfontconfig1 (every X application).

 Without shuffling files between packages, I don't see how I can
 correctly eliminate the circular dependency here.

I am unsure what you are discussing here.

The only dependency which is problematic is libfontconfig1 Depends: on
fontconfig. Other packages depending on fontconfig are OK. Packages
depending on libfontconfig1 are OK providing they also Depends on
fontconfig (which can be achieved through shlibs file).

Bug#310891: gphoto2: The first --get-all-files attempt always fails on Canon A80

2005-05-27 Thread Frederic Peters
Jukka Suomela wrote:

 Package: gphoto2
 Version: 2.1.5-1

 I have a Canon A80 and I use gphoto2 to download images from the
 camera by performing the following steps:

Could you try to downgrade to libgphoto2-2 and libgphoto2-port0
2.1.5-5 ?

Is your camera using PTP or Canon own protocol ? Could you try to
switch to the other one ?

For the record I have no problem with a Canon A70 using PTP.

Bug#310928: libmissinglib-ocaml-dev: please provide an escape sequence for : and = separators

Hi,

 I am digging into dfsbuild. Could it be possible to add some escape

Actually, it could also be relevant for the # and ; special
comment characters that are (purposely) also forbidden in the body of
an option.

Like:

someoption = \# with an escaped comment.
 other lines...
 now\; possible\; configuration\; parameters\;
 \# another line not seen as a comment
 and so on...

Best regards,
Frederic

 Any news? I haven't received an answer on that one?

 I'm sorry, Alexander, I know I wanted to ask you where I find this
 file. Is it a debconf file? I'm a Mac OSX user, so i don't know much
 about Debian blush, although both my husband and son are keen
 Debian users.

 You are welcome to send me any files you would like translated. I'm
 just working my way (possibly a life-time task) through the debconf
 file list... so I don't have any priorities other than getting that
 done, in this project.

Thanks, the objectives left for tbird are namely:

mozilla-thunderbird.desktop and mozilla-thunderbird-pm.desktop

in the debian/ directory of the source package. (e.g. apt-get source
mozilla-thunderbird).

There are basically two lines to translate: Name and Comment. I guess you
figure out what to do as soon as you look into those files. If you have further
questions, feel free to ask!

Please Reply-All to include the bug-report in your answers. Thanks!

Cheers,

Bug#310960: hackish port to udev 0.58 - needed for = 2.6.12-rc4 linux users

2005-05-27 Thread browaeys . alban
Package: udev
Version: 0.058-1
Severity: wishlist
Tags: patch

While switching to 2.6.12-rc5 udev was unable to create the devices managed by
 advanced rules.

$ udevinfo -a -p /class/tty/ttyUSB0

udevinfo starts with the device the node belongs to and then walks up the
device chain, to print for every device found, all possibly useful attributes
in the udev key format.
Only attributes within one device section may be used together in one rule,
to match the device for which the node will be created.

device '/sys/class/tty/ttyUSB0' has major:minor 188:0
  looking at class device '/sys/class/tty/ttyUSB0':
SUBSYSTEM=tty
SYSFS{dev}=188:0

follow the class device's device
couldn't open device directory

my rule behing :
BUS=usb, KERNEL=ttyUSB*, SYSFS{product}=USB Serial Adaptor,
SYMLINK=pilot

the only way to get pilot created was to use:
BUS=*, KERNEL=ttyUSB*, SYMLINK=pilot

switching to 0.58 fixed it as told in the release note.

Attached is the patch needed to get a hackish deb for the new udev. Taking the
packaging of 0.56 adding the new upstream source in upstream/ and applying this
patch got
me a working udev (thanks for the easy to hack packaging :)

Please close the bug if it is inappropriate or worst broken ...
(i did not know how to make - even a local - nmu to my local repo
: 0.58-1.1 is tricky as it will prevent your official package
from installing ...)

Regards
Alban

Bug#310809: 310809: confirmed not an RC bug

2005-05-27 Thread Alastair McKinstry
Hi,

I tried a woody-sarge install, and the offending ldif file does not
work on 2.0.23, so this is not an RC issue. It is a regression for
sid - sarge and testing - sarge only.

Yes, I meant 2.2.23-5 not 2.2.25 in the report.

Attached are trimmed down example ldif and slapd.conf files
demonstrating the problem.

Bug#310965: http://tjener.debian-edu.org

2005-05-27 Thread Geert Stappers
Package: debian-edu-config
Severity: wishlist

Hello,

I think it is nice to have website where a configurerd tjener is
displayed. Something like the Linux crossreference [1], but different.

So browsing to

  http://tjener.debian-edu.org/venus/etc/ldap/slapd.conf

would show the OpenLDAP configuration file. [2]

Or

  http://tjener.debian-edu.org/fresh/etc/dhcp3/dchpd.conf

can be visited with a webbrowser to see what is the most recent
development version of the DCHP server configuration file.

My primairy request is for research / study proposes,
but I assume that it can be used to restore a tjener.

Cheers
Geert Stappers

I hope that 2.2.0-8 should hit testing really soon, so the bug will probably

Bug#310744: pymol: segmentation fault on nvidia hardware

2005-05-27 Thread Toine Schreurs
Strange, I installed libc6-dbg, set the LD_LIBRAY_PATH variable
and now pymol does not segfault anymore.

This was the only change. I now have added /usr/lib/debug to
/etc/ld.so.conf, and after ldconfig everything works as expected.

Toine

 Sorry, I forgot about that. The backtrace might be slightly more
 informative if you install the libc6-dbg package (and possible do
 'export LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/usr/lib/debug' before running gdb).

  Hmm. Is there some stuck Munin process on your system? If so, could

Bug#310968: libesmtp5: segfaults when using TLS

2005-05-27 Thread Simon Richter
Package: libesmtp5
Version: 1.0.3-1
Severity: important

Hi,

esmtp segfaults for me when attempting to establish a TLS session, while
trying to work out whether a key is acceptable. The reason for that is
that meth-d2i is NULL in smtp-tls.c:565.

As I'm not overly clueful with TLS libs, I
have no real idea what that means or how it could be circumvented.

Bug#310891: gphoto2: The first --get-all-files attempt always fails on Canon A80

2005-05-27 Thread Jukka Suomela
Hi,

On Friday, 2005-05-27 11:39, Frederic Peters wrote:
 Could you try to downgrade to libgphoto2-2 and libgphoto2-port0
 2.1.5-5 ?

I had the same problem already in February, so I guess downgrading wouldn't
help.

 Is your camera using PTP or Canon own protocol ?

gphoto2 autodetects Canon PowerShot A80 (normal mode), not Canon PowerShot
A80 (PTP), so I think it is using the non-PTP one.

 Could you try to
 switch to the other one ?

Do you mean changing some configuration settings in the camera? (How? I didn't
find anything related in the menus.) Or forcing gphoto2 to use PTP?

Best regards,
Jukka Suomela

This problem is reported against ipsec-tools 0.5.2. The submitter claims
that it was broken in 0.5 but working in 0.5.1. AFAIK, 0.5.2 has only bug

Does this make any sense?

I guess that this is what you wanted, if not please tell me what more do you
want me to do...

Unfortunately, you didn't use reportbug to report your bug, and thus
no information about your configuration is available which could aid
in remote debugging.

Do you want me to do that now, or do you want me to give more info? If so, tell
me what.

If the OP quoted his config accurately, I'm betting it's the commas that
are breaking things. Exim uses : (without spaces) for list separation.

I've tried that. The result:

Bug#310972: gdb: [CAN-2005-1704] [CAN-2005-1705] Integer overflow and privilege escalation

2005-05-27 Thread Martin Pitt
Package: gdb
Version: 6.3-5
Severity: grave

Justification: user security hole

Hi!

gdb is vulnerable against two flaws. Please see

  https://www.ubuntulinux.org/support/documentation/usn/usn-135-1

for details and

  http://patches.ubuntu.com/patches/gdb.CAN-2005-1704_1705.diff

for the Ubuntu patch. This patch fixes not only the integer overflow,
but also adds some robustness checking to not crash on various types
of crafted ELF files.

Bug#310938: vserver-debiantools: add a few more things during newvserver possible ?

 I am testing out the vserver features and like it very much, however, I
 am wondering if it is possible to add a few things during the newvserver
 creation stage as the following :

 1. mknod /dev/tap? and /dev/net/tun

 The rationale is that for typical vserver usage(say VDS hosting),
 networking is a must and for my own experience, I like to setup a
 openvpn tunnel between my vserver at my service provider and my home
 machine and openvpn needs tap/tun

No I do not think this is a very good idéa as the vserver should be
as stripped as possible. If you need this you can configure that later.
It was a nice suggestion though but vpn things within a vserver is not a
very common thing.

 2. install ssh daemon

 Again, even I have changed my hosting server's sshd to listen to its own
 address, I cannot ssh into the client server because it is not installed
 during the bootstrap process(I have to chroot into it to install it).
 While this can be done during the package selection of the debootstrap
 process, I think this is better to be the default as that is the easiest
 way to have a vserver up properly in one shoot.

You can configure this in the newvserver.conf configuration file.

Bug#310862: mozilla-firefox: firefox 1.0.4 shows wrong version number in About

2005-05-27 Thread Holger Wansing
Hi,

  Help - About Mozilla Firefox from the menu shows Version 1.0.3
  running. I double-checked that the correct binary from the 1.0.4 deb
  package is used.

 It looks like you installed 1.0.3 by hand and you're running that
 rather than the Debian package. Check your machine.

I thought I checked for exactly that, but looks as I wasn't
precise enough: Yes, you are right, there was an 1.0.3 installed
in /usr/local/ I had forgotten about.
Sorry for the noise.

Bug#310971: somaplayer: config file should be in /etc

2005-05-27 Thread Justin B Rye
Package: somaplayer
Version: 0.5.2-2

somaplayer's stderr feedback implies, and strace confirms, that it

Bug#310973: somaplayer: somaplayer_configure fails due to missing test.wav

2005-05-27 Thread Justin B Rye
Package: somaplayer
Version: 0.5.2-2
Severity: normal

Running somaplayer_configure doesn't appear to be necessary, but
when I try it I get the following message:

Search your audio interface...

Try OSS:
I can't open the test file.

strace tells me it's looking for /usr/share/somaplayer/test.wav;
but there's no such directory, let alone file, in any of the
somaplayer family of Debian packages (presumably it should be the
source tarball's src/configure/test.wav).  When I create one,
somaplayer_configure works fine:

Search your audio interface...

Try OSS:
Do you listen something? [y/n] y
I can't open your config file. I create it.
Good work :)

By the way, this is also very obviously non-native-speaker English.
I'd suggest:

Searching for your audio interface...
Trying OSS:
Did you hear anything? [y/n] y
Couldn't open your config file - I have created one.
Good work :)

The vreboot tool should actually not be copied over as it is no longer
supported as far as I know.

Bug#310975: apt-get manual, usage of special signs (i.e. for install) is hard to find

2005-05-27 Thread Daniel Lublin
Package: apt
Version: 0.5.28.6
Severity: wishlist

I was recently told about the feature to append a minus sign (-) to a
package name when apt-get install:ing, to have the package removed.

Despite having read (or skimmed) the man page for apt-get quite a few
times over the years, I did not know about this. Probably because it
is not very visible to the eye. Thus, I marked the signs that are
mentioned in the man file, as is done with the minus above.

If you like this, a patch is included (for the English document).

Bug#303548: gpsd connecting to Garmin eTrex Venture unreliable

 I use a Garmin eTrex Venture (firmware 2.70, serial data format set to:

 After connecting the GPS to to the serial port I start gpsd as follows:

   gpsd -p /dev/ttyS0 -T n -n -D2

 Out of 40 consecutive connection attempts, 14 failed with gpsd not catching
 the connection at 4800baud. gpsd then tries the other baud rates until it
 terminates. I had up to three connection attempts fail in a row.

Hi,

thanks for your report. I've prepared a package of the current gpsd
release, 2.25. The autobauding code has improved a lot since 2.13, so
chances are your problem is resolved with the new version.

Could you please test the current version:
http://www.subnetz.org/debian/gpsd/

Please consider reporting your findings to the gpsd developers as well,
so your receiver can be included in the gpsd hardware list:
http://gpsd.berlios.de/hardware.html

many thanks for your translation! Unfortunately, I had to change the

The latest package, 2.25-1, is not uploaded to the archive yet. You can

Bug#310976: davfs2: convert usernames/groupsnames to uid/gid

Hi,
the attached patch allows to give usernames/groupnames instead of uid
and gid for the uid and gid options, with this patch you can write:

mount.davfs http://foo/bar /mnt -ouid=admin,gid=src

instead of having to lookup the group and user by hand. This makes it
easier to integrate things into pam_mount, etc.

Hello,

what Desktop environment do you use?

There is a report at Mozilla.org which goes about hangs and pauses when using
Mozilla Firefox under KDE:

https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=273442

We experienced those lately too on several machines using KDE desktops. See my

I will keep an eye on this.

Bug#310960: udev and 2.6.12-rc5

2005-05-27 Thread Ron

Hi Marco,

I see this is reported here now, so I'll follow up to confirm
this as a bug. It broke the wacom.rules from the wacom-tools
package when I updated to -rc5 earlier today. (I tried to mail
you privately, and just got your sorbs bounce. I still do my own
(TLS authenticated) mail delivery... )

For the benefit of folks at home, changing:

KERNEL=event[0-9]*, SYSFS{idVendor}=056a, NAME=input/%k,
SYMLINK=input/wacom%e

to

KERNEL=event[0-9]*, DRIVER=wacom, NAME=input/%k, SYMLINK=input/wacom%e

is possibly even an improvement (but I'll have to think about
that a bit more). Though I presume if this is fixed upstream
we'll see a new upload soon enough.

The bug breaks another package, so its not really 'wishlist',
but I wont inflict the extra email on you to change it as I'm
sure you'll actually get it fixed slightly quicker if you don't
have to delete that first ; )

cheers,
Ron

With only the information you provide, it it impossible for me to
decide if this is a problem.

The *only* thing that I could imagine is that your previously had
a mdadm version installed, which provided mdadm.conf as a conffile
(managed by dpkg and visible in the `dpkg -s' output), and that this
file got erased on package upgrade. Even though this would be
a serious bug (if not grave), it would IMHO be in the previous
package, and I would need more information about it. Start by
telling me which previous version of mdadm you had installed. If you
could reproduce the problem, that would go a long way.

Bug#310952: util-vserver: vreboot location seems to be wrong

2005-05-27 Thread gary ng
What would be the new way to reboot inside a vserver
then ?

I am running the 1.2.10 version on 2.4 kernel as I
found 2.6 kernel is not very stable on my
machine(nothing to do with vserver).

I did copy it over manually and it works.

If it will not be copied in the future, I would
suggest the script and help message being changed and
hopefully, some readme for those who need to run in
legacy mode to know that it is still there.

Ganesan,

Are configure's parameters the same across 0.5 .. 0.5.2 versions? Maybe
some feature not-compiled produce this effect?

 Hi,

 This problem is reported against ipsec-tools 0.5.2. The submitter claims
 that it was broken in 0.5 but working in 0.5.1. AFAIK, 0.5.2 has only bug
 fixes and I can't imagine anything in 0.5.2 that can break interoperability
 with WinXP. Has anyone else seen a similar report?

 Daniel, is the new problem identical to the one described at

 suspicicious.

There is a change from 0.5 to 0.5.1 (to enable IPv6 correctly) but no
configure changes from 0.5.1 to 0.5.2.

Bug#310872: zsh can't be a ksh replacement (can't trap ERR).

2005-05-27 Thread Christophe Martin
Clint Adams a écrit :

 Recently, the Debian packages for ksh93, pdksh, and zsh cooperated to
 provide alternatives for /bin/ksh. This was done without defining any
 exact requirements, so at the present time, it is de facto the
 intersection of ksh93, pdksh, and zsh.
IMHO, this can only lead to confusion. if one installs zsh as ksh, he
might use commands that are not supported by historical ksh,
and historical scripts may not run.

Why not add ash, dash, bash and so on, into the ksh pool, until
only a=foo and echo bar are the common points ? surely because
all of us have an idea of what ksh should be, only this idea is a
bit different for each of us.

I realize there are many differences between implementations of
shells. There must be some incompatibilities between pdksh and ksh.
But this trap ERR thing seems to be a basic ksh functionnality.

Last, zsh is such a special shell, with all its exotic and powerful
functionalities, that when you need/want it, it is unlikely
you want it as a ksh. Debian already have 2 ksh...

 Unless this bug is deemed release-critical (I doubt it will be), the
 upcoming Debian release will allow zsh to easily be /bin/ksh.

I definitely hope that the alternative will be removed...

Have a nice weekend,
Christophe

Bug#310872: zsh can't be a ksh replacement (can't trap ERR).

2005-05-27 Thread Christophe Martin
Hi,

Bart Schaefer a écrit :

 Zsh does not provide an ERR trap because some platforms on which zsh can be
 compiled actually have SIGERR defined, which is a real OS-level signal and
 not interchangeable with the ksh et al. use of ERR as a magic trap.

 The zsh equivalent is

   trap 'echo alert-an-error-occured' ZERR
Don't you think it's strange to trap a Zsomething in Ksh ??

 A possible workaround would be

   (( $signals[(I)ERR] )) || alias -g ERR=ZERR

Waow ! That's knowing zsh !

But, If i keep zsh as ksh
I have to rewrite every script to put this workaround in.

On the other hand, if I ever run the modified script with the more
traditionnal ksh, the workaround fails.

So, for this particular problem of trap ERR, there are only problems
in using zsh as a ksh, at least on platform where ksh ERR does not
conflict with OS SIGERR. (By the way, what are the platform with OS
SIGERR ? And do some ksh run on them ?)

Regards,
Christophe
