Bug#445132: autoproject menu entry: inappropriate longtitle
Package: autoproject Version: 0.20-4 Severity: normal Hello James, The file /usr/share/menu/autoproject reads ?package(autoproject):needs=text \ section=Apps/Programming \ title=autoproject \ command=/usr/bin/autoproject \ longtitle=create a skeleton source package for a new program 1) This longtitle is inappropriate: the longtitle must be able to replace the title, it should reference the software name somehow preferably at the start. longtitle=Autoproject: create a skeleton source package would be much better. 2) Please capitalise the title field properly, perhaps as title=Autoproject 3) Please migrate to the new menu structure [1]. section=Apps/Programming should be changed to section=Applications/Programming [1] http://www.debian.org/doc/packaging-manuals/menu.html/ch3.html#s3.5 Thanks in advance, -- Bill. Bug#445085: 'man iso_8859-2' typo: Sorbian
Hi, Found a typo in '/usr/share/man/man7/iso_8859-2.7.gz', see attached '.diff'. Hope this helps... Yes it does. Thanks for all these patches. I'm not sure what Debian prefers, but for me, working upstream, inlined patches, rather than attachments, are faster to read and process. Bug#443674: same problem here
another data point re: nvidia 100.14.11 and 100.14.19 drivers i'm not sure if this is an nvidia-glx bug, an nvidia-kernel-* bug, or a kernel bug. it certainly shouldn't be classed as a browser bug because applications shouldn't be able to lock the system solid. my very strong suspicion is that it's actually the nvidia-kernel-* driver which is at fault. see below for why. i also had the same problem with version 100.14.11 like Hans, my entire system locks up after moderate use of the web browser (either mozilla or iceweasel - haven't tried others). scrolling a page back and forth, for example, will trigger it very quickly. here's why i think it's the kernel driver: i have been running kernel 2.6.20.14 with nvidia-kernel 100.14.09 for 2+ months without problems, without rebooting. about a week ago, i had a power failure and took the opportunity to reboot into a new 2.6.22.6 kernel. i compiled nvidia-kernel 100.14.11 to go with it, and upgraded nvidia-glx at the same time. the machine locked solid while using iceweasel within an hour of booting. rebooted again. it locked again while using iceweasel, also in less than an hour. i rebooted again and selected the old kernel (2.6.20.14) from the grub menu. the machine ran fine until today (when a hard disk problem required me to reboot). thinking the problem might have been with the 2.6.22.x kernel, i tried compiling 2.6.20.20 and nvidia-kernel driver 100.14.19, and again upgraded nvidia-glx to suit. again, the machine locked while using a browser (iceape, this time). i rebooted back to 2.6.20.14 and the machine has been running fine since...nearly 5 hours now. note: reverting to the old nvidia-kernel driver (100.14.09) while keeping the newer nvidia-glx package causes warnings about mismatched version to appear in /var/log/kern.log but everything works fine. that was how i ran it for the last week until today, and it's how i've been running it for the last 5 hours. Oct 3 18:48:42 ganesh kernel: [ 200.629000] NVRM: API mismatch: the client has the version 100.14.19, but Oct 3 18:48:42 ganesh kernel: [ 200.629000] NVRM: this kernel module has the version 100.14.09. Please Oct 3 18:48:42 ganesh kernel: [ 200.629000] NVRM: make sure that this kernel module and all NVIDIA driver Oct 3 18:48:42 ganesh kernel: [ 200.629000] NVRM: components have the same version. fortunately, the latest nvidia-glx package's dependancy on the matching nvidia-kernel package version only requires that nvidia-kernel-* package to be installed - it doesn't force you to use that nvidia.ko kernel module. so, Hans, there's another workaround for you. use an older kernel and the 100.14.09 nvidia-kernel driver, with the new nvidia-glx package. works fine. note: in all cases, i used stock linux kernel source from kernel.org and NOT the debianised kernel sources. i don't and won't use them. craig ps: my video hardware is also a 7300GS, and my system is an athlon64 am2 X2 (amd64 CPU but running 32-bit i386 debian as this machine has been upgraded for years and there isn't an upgrade path to 64-bit debian) with 4GB RAM. # lspci -v -s 02:00.0 02:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation GeForce 7300 GS (rev a1) (prog-if 00 [VGA]) Subsystem: ASUSTeK Computer Inc. Bug#382430: c-l-c installation of ecl does things wrong
Dear Peter, On 03/10/2007, Peter Van Eynde [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: It took some time but I finally had a moment to look at the issues. Thanks! Faré wrote: (1) it uses the c-l-c version of asdf and not the ecl-provided one from I almost fixed the 'official' asdf to support all the features the ecl provided one has. Now introducing maintenance problems instead :-) (2) it somehow gets cmp.fas and sysfun.lsp to systematically load verbosely in a way that isn't hushed up by flag -q resulting in an unremovable banner This after some searching turns out to be caused because common-lisp-controller.lisp uses the function 'compile-file'. As the clc enabled ecl includes this it causes these messages: ;;; Loading #P/usr/lib/ecl/cmp.fas ;;; Loading #P/usr/lib/ecl/sysfun.lsp I'm currently investigation how to fix this. Can't you use a :verbose nil option when loading these files, and/or set *load-verbose* to nil? (3) compiling configuration files everytime can be a performance issue, in addition to requiring to load the compiler. I'm not so certain what configuration files you're referring to here. Bug#445141: iceweasel: Cannot disable download prompt dialog
Package: iceweasel Version: 2.0.0.7-2 Severity: normal Starting without a ~/.mozilla directory, I try downloading a PDF file. I am offered Document viewer as the default application. Fine. I don't know if this problem is related, but if I install mozplugger, then it too is ignored: despite registering itself to handle PDF files (according to Edit-Preferences-Content), when I download a PDF file (and I double-checked the given MIME type, which was application/pdf, which is registered by mozplugger) I still get the normal download dialog, offering Document Viewer. Bug#400112: [PROPOSAL] forbid source/binary package name conflicts
Manoj Srivastava writes (Bug#400112: [PROPOSAL] forbid source/binary package name conflicts): On Thu, 23 Nov 2006 22:45:18 +0100, Lucas Nussbaum [EMAIL PROTECTED] said: Some source packages generate binary packages using the same name as another source package. For example, see the 'qd' source package, and the 'qd' binary package generated by the kfolding source package (in contrib). Some tools don't like it at all (e.g sbuild), [...] Another example is the bug system. When you submit a bug you (used to) write: Package: source or binary package name Version: version of that source or binary package The BTS now provides `Source:' instead of `Package:' but it has not been widely publicised AFAIR, no-one uses it (not even automated rebuild testers and the like), and it will be hard to get everyone's brains updated to conform to new requirements in this area. To make the existing interface to bugs.debian.org unambiguous the following rule is needed: If there are a source package and a binary package with the same name then (a) that binary package must be generated from the identically-named source and (b) the generated binary package version number must be the same as the generating source package version number Why is this not considered a bug in the tools that needs to be fixed, rather than creating policy to work around bugs in the toolchain? I think that trying to fix everyone's brains not to get confused in this area is impractical. People keep telling us that policy is supposed to document existing practice and that rules which make lots of existing packages buggy are bad. I don't necessarily agree, but it seems to me that allowing this kind of cross-domain name clash makes lots of tools buggy and therefore should be disallowed at least for now. The existing standard behaviour of bugs.debian.org, one of our key pieces of infrastructure, requires the rule above. If you currently say Package: qd Version: something then the BTS may or may not send the mail to the right place. Ian. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#445149: Allow rhythmbox-client to be used to stream from web browsers
Package: rhythmbox Version: 0.10.1-1+b1 Severity: wishlist rhythmbox-client can stream e.g. MP3s, which makes it a very nice candidate helper application for web browsers. Unfortunately, I think this needs some support from the rhythmbox package. My understanding of this area is deficient, but it seems that somewhere in the morass of GNOME MIME support and vfs, some configuration file is needed to make this work magically. At least, several hours' research has not turned up a way of making either epiphany or firefox/iceweasel use rhythmbox-client to stream MP3s (although firefox at least will happily download and then hand off the MP3, but that's not the point). The one browser I can get to work is Opera, which not being integrated with the free desktop is at least thoroughly configurable. Setting rhythmbox-client --play-uri as the handler for MP3 MIME types makes things work beautifully. So this should not be a hard thing to implement. There's an Ubuntu bug on this subject filed against Firefox: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/rhythmbox/+bug/62430 but unfortunately the thread became side-tracked talking about low-level configuration rather than just making the damn thing work. In any case, as far as I can tell, rhythmbox-client needs to supply information about its capability to GNOME, and then it should Just Work(TM). -- System Information: Debian Release: lenny/sid APT prefers testing APT policy: (700, 'testing'), (600, 'experimental'), (600, 'unstable') Architecture: i386 (i686) Kernel: Linux 2.6.21-2-686 (SMP w/1 CPU core) Locale: LANG=en_GB.UTF-8, LC_CTYPE=en_GB.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/dash Versions of packages rhythmbox depends on: ii dbus1.1.1-3 simple interprocess messaging syst ii gconf2 2.20.0-1 GNOME configuration database syste ii gnome-icon-theme2.20.0-1 GNOME Desktop icon theme ii gstreamer0.10-alsa [gst 0.10.14-4GStreamer plugin for ALSA ii gstreamer0.10-esd [gstr 0.10.6-2 GStreamer plugin for ESD ii gstreamer0.10-gnomevfs 0.10.14-4GStreamer plugin for GnomeVFS ii gstreamer0.10-plugins-b 0.10.14-4GStreamer plugins from the base ii gstreamer0.10-plugins-g 0.10.6-2 GStreamer plugins from the good ii gstreamer0.10-plugins-u 0.10.6-2 GStreamer plugins from the ugly ii gstreamer0.10-x 0.10.14-4GStreamer plugins for X11 and Pang ii libart-2.0-22.3.19-3 Library of functions for 2D graphi ii libatk1.0-0 1.20.0-1 The ATK accessibility toolkit ii libavahi-client30.6.21-2 Avahi client library ii libavahi-common30.6.21-2 Avahi common library ii libavahi-glib1 0.6.21-2 Avahi glib integration library ii libbonobo2-02.20.0-1 Bonobo CORBA interfaces library ii libbonoboui2-0 2.18.0-5 The Bonobo UI library ii libc6 2.6.1-1+b1 GNU C Library: Shared libraries ii libcairo2 1.4.10-1 The Cairo 2D vector graphics libra ii libdbus-1-3 1.1.1-3 simple interprocess messaging syst ii libdbus-glib-1-20.74-1 simple interprocess messaging syst ii libexpat1 1.95.8-4 XML parsing C library - runtime li ii libfontconfig1 2.4.2-1.2generic font configuration library ii libfreetype62.3.5-1+b1 FreeType 2 font engine, shared lib ii libgconf2-4 2.20.0-1 GNOME configuration database syste ii libglade2-0 1:2.6.2-1library to load .glade files at ru ii libglib2.0-02.14.0-2 The GLib library of C routines ii libgnome-keyring0 0.8.1-2 GNOME keyring services library ii libgnome-media0 2.18.0-2+b2 runtime libraries for the GNOME me ii libgnome2-0 2.20.0-1 The GNOME 2 library - runtime file ii libgnomecanvas2-0 2.14.0-3 A powerful object-oriented display ii libgnomeui-02.18.1-2 The GNOME 2 libraries (User Interf ii libgnomevfs2-0 1:2.20.0-1 GNOME Virtual File System (runtime ii libgnutls13 1.7.19-1 the GNU TLS library - runtime libr ii libgpod20.5.2-4 a library to read and write songs ii libgstreamer-plugins-ba 0.10.14-4GStreamer libraries from the base ii libgstreamer0.10-0 0.10.14-1Core GStreamer libraries and eleme ii libgtk2.0-0 2.12.0-2 The GTK+ graphical user interface ii libhal1 0.5.9.1-4Hardware Abstraction Layer - share ii libice6 2:1.0.4-1X11 Inter-Client Exchange library ii liblircclient0 0.8.0-12 LIRC client library ii libmusicbrainz4c2a 2.1.5-1 Second generation incarnation of t ii libnautilus-burn4 2.18.2-1
Bug#348046: latest kernel + debian sarge = TLS problems
Just wanted to chime in on what happened with our debian mail server. Using courier-imap-ssl, exim4, etc originally with a 2.4.25 kernel. Installed a hand compiled 2.6.22 kernel, rebooted, and ran into various problems, specifically with sending email using TLS. After much hairpulling and very little to go on via the logs(no errors logged), someone pointed me to this thread and the discussion of low entropy. Doing a cat of /proc/sys/kernel/random/entropy_avail was giving me at max a number in the high 50's. After rolling back to our 2.4 kernel, we are back at 4096. I haven't done enough research yet to figure out if this is a bug specific to the 2.6.22 kernel or if that 2.6 kernel uses something that debian sarge did not expect. Bug#445157: debootstrap - hardcoded value of TARGET in second-stage prevents creation of a foreign chroot
Package: debootstrap Version: 1.0.3 Severity: wishlist Emdebian is building a root filesystem that is created using debootstrap using the --foreign option. This is then copied to an embedded device for testing. Unfortunately, debootstrap --second-stage assumes that the TARGET is / which is awkward when what I actually want is to test the root filesystem (and the installation process itself) in a chroot first. So far, I've just tweaked debootstrap: - TARGET=/ + TARGET=$TARGET so that I can pass TARGET on the command line. Bug#445159: mped: Please update version
Package: mped Version: 3.3.17-1 Severity: wishlist Hi. The version in Debian for the Minimum Profit text editor is ancient (current upstream is 5.0.0-rc3, as I've received from the mailing list just now). The 5.0.0 release includes many interesting features, as full unicode support (in 3.x is awful) and a scriptable language (that I personally don't grok, but may be useful for someone). Also, different packages should exist for the GTK and Curses versions. The Git repository for the last 3 version (3.3.18b, IIRC) includes Debian configuration for this from the Debian package's maintainer, but for some unknown reason this is not on Debian archives. The 5 version doesn't include any Debian package information. Bug#445163: xscreensaver-gl: OpenGL screensavers use CPU heavily in an inactive virtual terminal
Package: xscreensaver-gl Version: 5.03-2 Severity: normal Hi, I have several users on the same home computer, often leaving sessions open and using KDE's Switch User to move between users; for all users, the screen saver is set to Random. Many times, upon switching to a different user, the CPU consumption goes to either 100% or 100% of one core (of four). Invariably, when this happen, the culprit process is an openGL screensaver running on behalf of the user whose session was exited -- that is, a screen saver running in an X session in a virtual terminal which is not the active virtual terminal. While it is true that the screensaver is nice'd, so any other process who needs the CPU will get it, I see no reason for it to consume so much CPU for no cause whatsoever. It is not without costs (in heat, electricity, and in my case even noise). One more note: I am using NVidia's glx package, which might be blamed for the 100% part of this issue, but I think not for the main part which is that the screensaver is trying to run at all. -- System Information: Debian Release: lenny/sid APT prefers unstable APT policy: (500, 'unstable') Architecture: i386 (i686) Kernel: Linux 2.6.22-2-686 (SMP w/4 CPU cores) Locale: LANG=en_US.UTF-8, LC_CTYPE=en_US.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/bash Versions of packages xscreensaver-gl depends on: ii libc6 2.6.1-5 GNU C Library: Shared libraries ii libgl1-mesa-glx [libgl1]7.0.1-2 A free implementation of the OpenG ii libgle3 3.1.0-5.3OpenGL tubing and extrusion librar ii libglib2.0-02.14.1-4 The GLib library of C routines ii libglu1-mesa [libglu1] 7.0.1-2 The OpenGL utility library (GLU) ii libgtk2.0-0 2.12.0-2 The GTK+ graphical user interface ii libice6 2:1.0.4-1X11 Inter-Client Exchange library ii libsm6 2:1.0.3-1+b1 X11 Session Management library ii libx11-62:1.0.3-7X11 client-side library ii libxext61:1.0.3-2X11 miscellaneous extension librar ii libxmu6 1:1.0.3-1X11 miscellaneous utility library ii libxpm4 1:3.5.7-1X11 pixmap library ii libxt6 1:1.0.5-3X11 toolkit intrinsics library ii libxxf86vm1 1:1.0.1-2X11 XFree86 video mode extension l Versions of packages xscreensaver-gl recommends: ii xscreensaver 5.03-2 Automatic screensaver for X -- no debconf information -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#170522: dist-upgrade still fetches unnecessary packages in apt 0.7.6
Package: apt Version: 0.7.6 Followup-For: Bug #170522 found 0.7.6 thanks I just wanted to ping this old bug because it is still present in the current version of apt-get. I primarily run unstable, but I have some boost libraries installed (and held) from testing. For example: apt-cache policy libboost-program-options-dev libboost-program-options-dev: Installed: 1.33.1-10 Candidate: 1.34.1-2 Version table: 1.34.1-2 0 500 http://http.us.debian.org unstable/main Packages *** 1.33.1-10 0 500 http://http.us.debian.org testing/main Packages 100 /var/lib/dpkg/status Now, the testing version of this package depends on libboost-program-options1.33.1, but the unstable version depends on libboost-program-options1.34.1 . When I do try a dist-upgrade, libboost-program-options-dev is correctly listed as kept back, libboost-program-options1.33.1 is not mentioned at all, and libboost-program-options1.34.1 is listed as a NEW package to be installed. I've checked to ensure that nothing else depends on any of these packages, and if I allow the dist-upgrade to continue, I can immediately purge libboost-program-options1.34.1 without any problems. I haven't included output of get apt-get commands because there is a lot of unrelated output and I'm quite certain this is the same bug that others have already diagnosed. Bug#433398: dmx4linux deb
Sorry, Simon. I'm not maintaining libdmx4linux any longer. The upstream's package primary purpose is to provide kernel drivers for hardware DMX devices. I never used or packaged the kernel drivers. I only packaged the console tools dmxconsole, dmxdisplay and dmxpanel. I'm now using the `Linux Lighting Architecture' [1] for this purpose, which can also send and receive network lighting control commands. The dmx4linux package has been up for adoption [2] for some time now with no takers, so I think I shall now request for it to be removed from Debian. Bug#445091: Debconf abuse: mplayer/cfgnote
Quoting Christian Perrier ([EMAIL PROTECTED]): Package: mplayer Severity: normal This note is likely to interrupt some installations of the package to just mentionthat the package should be configured in detail and that the debconf process only configures important stuff. This definitely does not belong to debconf but more to a README.Debian file. Please consider moving this to that location. I'm starting a review of the debconf tempaltes (you'll soon be notified) and will include that offending template, but indeed, I'd rather skip it..:-) The mplayer/replace-existing-files-bail template also falls in that category...even more, imho, than cfgnote. Similarly, mplayer/install_codecs does for me also belong to README.Debian. Why not, indeed, propose users to launch the script that downloads the non free codecs? The upgrade removed the link and installed a /etc/ssl directory containing only two empty directories (certs and private). The openssl package has a few files/dirs in /etc: /etc/ssl /etc/ssl/openssl.cnf /etc/ssl/private /etc/ssl/certs /etc/ssl/openssl.cnf is also marked as a conffile. The later 2 are just empty directories the openssl package might use. The ca-certificates package for instance also puts it's files there. If you just replace /etc/ssl by a symlink, dpkg gets confused when you try to upgrade it to a newer version, and I think it just removes the symlink and creates the files and directories again. You could argue that this is a bug in dpkg, but it might also be documented behaviour, I don't know. I'm just going to reassign it to the dpkg package. Bug#445163: xscreensaver-gl: OpenGL screensavers use CPU heavily in an inactive virtual terminal
1) If a GL saver is consuming 100% CPU, then that means that OpenGL is running on the CPU and not on the GPU, in other words, it's not using your graphics hardware at all. So you should try and figure out why that would be. 2) There's no way for xscreensaver to realize that it's not on the selected console. So even though it might be sensible for xscreensaver on deselected consoles to go into black mode, there's no way to implement that. Obsoletes extensions are now marked as obsolete and we can easily upgrade them. Great (: Closing the bug. Note that the problem was still there in 1.0.4-2, and this is not related to obsolete extensions. The Calendar extension had exactly the *same version* after upgrades, and since I could reinstall it, it was not obsolete. But due to various problems I had with the extension itself (crashes, alarms not firing up...), I no longer use the Calendar extension. For the record, this was fixed by the new extensions manager in version 1.5. I don't think this was fixed before. Mike -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#443936: xserver-xorg-video-mga: windowmaker and 1.9.99 get along terribly
kls wrote: The previously observed abysmal 2d performance seems to be triggered by WindowMaker. This does not seem to be a compositing problem, because it is identical regardless of whether I have DRI enabled or not. It also appears independent of number of active screens. All windows take approximately 1 sec / MPixel to draw on my computer (1GHz athlon) Hi Brice -- I finally got around to upgrading my laptop (ATI M6LY)'s install of sid, and found that this is *not* a problem in the mga driver. It's a problem in some other random xorg component, presumably libxcomposite1. To work around it, I have to disable both the Composite extension and AIGLX -- it seems that with only one disabled the other caused it to be re-enabled. (Any suggestions on tracing down what's actually wrong?) (e.g. Section Extensions Option Composite disable EndSection Section ServerFlags Option AIGLX no EndSection ) So I guess that means this bug should either be moved to a different package or closed. Bug#445166: RM: dmx4linux
Package: ftp.debian.org Please remove dmx4linux from the archive. The library, libdmx4linux2, has no reverse dependencies except for dmx4linux-tools, which is built by the same source package. There have been no upstream updates since 2005-09-14. The Debian package currently packages the utilities but not the kernel drivers, which is the upstream package's primary purpose. The utilities packaged in dmx4linux-tools are largely superseded by the Linux Lighting Architecture [1], which does provide Debian packages, although not within the Debian archive.
