Bug#295739: handle-switch-frame: Symbol's function definition is void: nil

I'm revising old Emacs bugs.

 Here's the debug:

I was using tramp with an .rvt file and therefore two-mode-mode.

What's really weird is I can't even quit:

 save-buffers-kill-emacs doesn't exit. kill-emacs finally quits the
 thing.

This has only started happening recently.

Weird. Have you seen this again and can you reproduce it? Also, does
it happen with the emacs22 packages in Lenny as well?

Cheers,
   Sven

 Thanks for the efforts.

I started emacs from shell and menu. Alas, I get many boxes. This kind
of funny application behavior is the typical situation when correct font
is not available. Is this intended thing under en_US.UTF-8 locale? I
thought etch was UTF-8 as default.

It is, and for most people (including me) emacs21 works fine, yet some
people see only hollow boxes instead of characters. The reasons are
still unknown, although the problem has been discussed in great length
 in bug #352811.

Since gvim start without problem here, I think default behavior of emacs
deserves a bit better support. (I think issue is default font selection.)

Two years have passed since. Do you still see the problem with the
 emacs[12] packages in Lenny?

I do not experience this problem with the emacs21 package nor with the
emacs22 package in Lenny. (I am not extensive user of emacs)

Good to hear.

 As you know:
We have new X server/client situation where fontconfig is used
(i.e., client side font management: the new Xft 2 font system is used)
So .Xdefaults may not be the only one chosing fonts.

 http://people.debian.org/~osamu/pub/getwiki/html/ch08.en.html#fontsinthexwindow

None of this applies to Emacs 22 and earlier. Only Emacs 23 will have
fontconfig/Xft support.

Also emacs might have changed default behavior ...

Certainly not the emacs21 package, and emacs22 isn't much different in
that respect.

Cheers,
   Sven

Bug#510564: nautilus: smb file deletion gvfs

2009-01-03 Thread db
Package: nautilus
Version: 2.20.0-7
Severity: grave
Justification: causes non-serious data loss

Hi I found a bug on ubuntu launchpad and reproduced it is (the bug)
currently in debian lenny and is filed upstream (i filled it upstream).
http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=564563

Here is a copy of what the bug is as per my report of it to gnome's
bugtracker.
When usingsmb shares (smb://server/foldername), files can be deleted
without warning due to case sensitivity issues.

Steps to reproduce:
1. have a samba server sharing files on an ext3 partition.

2. make a file called 123.abc
3. make a file called 123.ABC

Actual results:
The file called 123.abc is deleted and no warning message is shown to
the user,
the file is just deleted.
--
Expected results:

A prompt to show up and alert the user that they will overwrite / delete
the
original file.

Does this happen every time?
Yes.

Bug#510565: hdapsd doesn't write into /var/log/syslog

2009-01-03 Thread Nils
Package: hdapsd
Version: 1:0.0.20081004-1

Everything works fine, if I start hdapsd -d sda -s 15 from console I get the
output:

Sat Jan 3 09:59:19 2009: parking
Sat Jan 3 09:59:21 2009: un-parking

If I start the daemon via /etc/init.d/hdapsd start I don't see any log
entry.
I think these messages are important and should be logged e.g.
in /var/log/syslog or another logfile.

Best regards,

Hi,

in some weeks I'll have a clean system where I can test and try to
reproduce these bugs.
They seem to be connected to lvm and loading of the dm-modules as well.

Any further information that could help to shed more light on the
situation is much appreciated.

but after doing so, I not only had problems shutting down but also with
restarting, leaving the root filesystem mounted read-only though mount
 claimed it was read-write.

debug=echo means each command that the script would do is echo'd and not
actually performed. It is used for development/debugging of script to make
sure it does things in correct sequence.

I'm not sure this is a bug, but maybe the code comments could be a little more
verbose than they are currently, and warn people not to leave 'debug=echo'
uncommented for actual script use.

Thanks, Kel.

Bug#510455: [Pkg-sysvinit-devel] Bug#510455: initscripts: fails to boot when debug=echo uncommented in /etc/init.d/rc

I tried uncommenting the line in /etc/init.d/rc that has

debug=echo

but after doing so, I not only had problems shutting down but also with
restarting, leaving the root filesystem mounted read-only though mount
claimed it was read-write.

debug=echo means each command that the script would do is echo'd and not
actually performed. It is used for development/debugging of script to make
sure it does things in correct sequence.

I'm not sure this is a bug, but maybe the code comments could be a little more
verbose than they are currently, and warn people not to leave 'debug=echo'
uncommented for actual script use.

Thanks, Kel.

Thanks, is there any way to run the start-up and shut-down scripts with
the kind of verbosity provided by sh -x?

Another wish-list item would be to run the start-up and shut-down
scripts with just enough extra output to indicate what script was being run.

This was all inspired by a problem with SCSI module eata being loaded
due to its inclusion in /etc/modules, but the appearance of the device
files /dev/sda? happening *after* fsck was run on the non-root file systems.

Regards,

Arthur.

Bug#510571: Spurious # generated in mason_example output [patch].

2009-01-03 Thread Andreas Krüger
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA1

Package: libhtml-mason-perl-examples
Version: 1:1.39-1
Severity: Minor

The output generated by various mason examples, e.g.,
http://localhost/mason_example/index.html ,
contains a spurious #. That is displayed by the browser next to the
powered by Mason logo, and can be found in the generated HTML code
in the div class=footer as follows:

 div class=footer

 #
 /div
 /td/tr/table

 /body
 /html

This output is the result of a line

#% $ENV{UNIQUE_ID} %

in
/usr/share/doc/libhtml-mason-perl-examples/examples/mason_example/autohandler
resp. its active copy /var/www/mason_example/autohandler .

I guess someone tried to comment out that line, but did not quite succeed.
Compare http://www.masonhq.com/docs/manual/Devel.html#comment_markers .

As that line does not seem to serve any particular purpose, I suggest
removing it. The trivial patch is included.

Regards, and thank you for providing fine software,

Andreas

Bug#510575: vdr: Possible segfault when exiting VDR

2009-01-03 Thread Mario Keller
Package: vdr

Severity: important

The usage if isyslog in VDR's signal handler causes a segfault when
exiting VDR. This already has been fixed in VDR's maintenance release
1.6.0-2.

Yes. #348480 is fixed in the development branch (3.1), but won't make it
into the 3.0 branch (change of algorithm).

Would it be too complicated to backport the change into the octave3.0
  package?

Good question. I just tested polyfit from the Mercurial head and it
seems to work. Should we just use it instead of the default polyfit? It
comes with 9 tests and all pass.

Okay, I am hereby cloning the bug report and reassigning it to octave3.0. I
also tagged #348480 with wontfix, since octave2.1 will be dropped from
Debian post-lenny. I will soon fix the new bug report against octave3.0 by
adding a dpatch.

of the setting of AGP mode.

Sure, BusType PCI disables AGP. So you need to test different values for
Option AGPMode without Option BusType.

The server log file seems to indicate that the server assumes 1 as
 default.

The log file from the original report shows 4x being used. The default
is to leave it unchanged from what the firmware set it up to, with the
exception of known hardware combinations where only other values work.

So, your table is a little confusing... please just try all AGP transfer
rates and see if any of them works.

Great, thanks for the feedback. The release team has acknowledged the

Bug#367165: [Pkg-octave-devel] Bugs in octave2.1

retitle -1 octave3.0: please put runtime libraries in /usr/lib, not

found -1 3.0.3-1

* Rafael Laboissiere raf...@debian.org [2009-01-02 18:02]:

New year comes and it is time for some cleanup. I started doing some triage
on the bug reports filed against the DOG packages. For octave2.1, we have
 the following open bug reports:

   #505373 FTBFS with GCC 4.4: missing #include
#477348 octave2.1: documentation of randn lacking detail
#367165 octave2.1: please put runtime libraries in /usr/lib, not
 /usr/lib/octave-VERSION
#348480 polyfit breaks down over large x values

The first two bugs are tagged wontfix and we should just ignore them.
On the other hand, bugs #367165 and #348480 also apply to octave3.0 and
should not disappear when octave2.1 will be dropped from Debian after the
release of lenny. Should we reassign those bug reports to octave3.0?

As I already did for #348480, I am hereby cloning #367165 and reassigning to
octave3.0. The final goal is to tag #367165 with wontfix, such that the way
is clear for removing octave2.1 post-lenny.

Whether this needs ftpmaster to just change the source override, or each

I think net is a more appropriate section for a P2P program. Other

In the last debian releases /etc/nologin is just a symlink to

It looks like dillo could be removed due to the RC bug #510348 but to

After only a v.brief look at the claws-mail package, removing that
plugin appears trivial. Are there any other problems with removing the

Can an upload of claws-mail be arranged that drops the dillo-viewer?

Woah, thanks for the fly-by. Your analysis confirms what I suspected
from a quick glance at the build logs last night.

I guess the thing to do would be to concentrate on why it isn't linking
on non-x86. Indeed, I wonder if JPL has ever been tested on other
architectures - it only worked with Sun's JDK in the past (which was
exclusively x86 and sparc, I think).

Thanks again.

Bug#507382: gourmet: Works for me

2009-01-03 Thread Rolf Leggewie
Package: gourmet
Followup-For: Bug #507382

Mattia and Jonathan,

thank you for the information provided.

My main system is Ubuntu hardy and I never experienced this problem
there. I am not sure what system Thomas (upstream) is using, but he was
unable to reproduced it as well. I had a few private mails with Mattia
to try and understand where the problem is coming from and find a way to
reliably reproduce the issue. Today, I even installed a lenny test
system on a virtualbox and gourmet ran fine for me. As far as I can see,
it works as expected in most cases. We currently have no information
how to reliably reproduce this crash. Thus, I am downgrading severity
from blocker status.

Jonathan, thank you for the patch. I am running in en_US.UTF-8 locale
perfectly fine. If indeed this is a locale issue, we will need to dig
deeper. I find replacing ñ with n unacceptable. I am a native
German with strong ties to the Japanese language and I loathe to live in
an americanized, ASCII-only world.

Let's try and find some way to reproduce this issue and then we should
come up with a proper fix.

Regards

Rolf

Bug#508032: DBus plan for Lenny

2009-01-03 Thread Matthew Johnson
Hi guys, I'm looking to come up with a plan for DBus in Lenny. The
relevant bug is #508032.

A quick synopsis of the problem is that until recently DBus was shipped
with a default configuration on the system bus which allowed more
message than was intended. 1.2.10 fixes this but unfortunately it breaks
numerous other bits of software which relied on this (mainly
introspection). There is also a 'permissive' release which merely logs
when there would be a problem but still lets them through. It does not
actually fix the problem, however.

If we do want to fix the problem properly then all the packages which
rely on the broken behaviour will also need to be fixed. This should be
as simple as just adding a few lines to their system bus config files.
I've attached a list of packages which would be affected. The shorter
list (*-files*, also has a list of versions in lenny and sid and
migration excuses. Sorry if there's a better way to do that than I've
found!) is those packages which already drop a file in
/etc/dbus-1/system.d, which should be everything. There is a small
possibility that there is a package which does not currently have a
config file but which should. The longer list is rdepends of
libdbus-1-3, it will definitely not be anything not on this list.

Opinions?

Matt

Bug#510583: CVE-2008-5744: overflow in tor2 driver in Zaptel

2009-01-03 Thread Florian Weimer
* Tzafrir Cohen:

Sadly I don't have the hardware involved to test that.

And we've got a pending stable update that we can release once someone
has tested it (possibly on different hardware, just for regressions).

Bug#510275: krypt

2009-01-03 Thread Ana Guerrero

So, to conclude, just take a moment to reply with at least a simple go-on
   or don't-go-on. I won't argue any more.

You are free to package it and ask people to sponsor it. Nobody can forbid
you of uploading a proper package to Debian if you find a sponsor, but
think in the work that this will carry to the distro for maybe little gain.
Your package will be some time in unstable, yeah, but its final target
won't be being in a debian release given that squeeze (next release after
  lenny) will have KDE 4.

I believe that I cannot take such a decision myself. From my POV (as a debian
user) I want this program to be in debian and that's why i packaged it (as
expected, I'm also using it). Fotis offered to sponsor it but I don't want to
introduce problems to debian, so I'll follow your advice.

As for KDE4, krypt will be usable for squeeze too and when the author ports
 it
to KDE4 it will be ported for debian too. Having this in debian may increase
the interrest of other/new users for it and they may offer to do the porting
themeselves. As I see it, its main/only problem is that it will be replaced
by built-in support in KDE4 sometime in the future (perhaps in KDE 4.3) but
until then (1 year from now?) it is an essential tool for all
 encrypted-USB-stick, encrypted-USB-disk and
 laptop-with-encrypted-data-partition KDE3/4 users.

In case it is not clear, my advise is: if you really want to do things right,
wait for the KDE 4 port, and upload it directly to Debian. If the tool is
really so handy (not saying it is not, i just have not used it), it does not
need to be in Debian to encourage its porting.
Hopefully in 2 month, KDE 3.5 will be only in lenny that does not allow new
packages and unstable will contain KDE 4.2.

p.s. Should I stop CCing you?
I am already subscribed to pkg-kde-talk, but i do not mind it.

Bug#504187: squashfs 3.4 + lzma 4.57

2009-01-03 Thread Jordi Pujol
Hello,

advancing in the development of that package, here is my personal
holidays gift to the Open Source movement,

squashfs 3-4 with lzma 4.57 in the URL
http://www.gilug.org/?q=node/309

you'll observe that this version of lzma does better compression that
the previous version, even 25% less than squashfs+gz.

I expect that it could be a base for a new Debian package,

Happy holidays,

Bug#510594: tpconfig: [INTL:fr] French debconf templates translation update

2009-01-03 Thread Michel Grentzinger
Package: tpconfig
Version: N/A
Severity: wishlist
Tags: patch l10n

Hello,

Please find the attached fr.po file, which is an update of the french
translation of the debconf templates. This file has been reviewed by
the contributors of the debian-l10n-french mailing-list.

Could you put this file to the debian/po/ directory of this package,
in remplacement of the old fr.po file ?

Hi there,

The attached patch should fix the issues with hangs in postinst, and
while I was there, I made restart have the same behavior as stop +
start, which seemed like the right thing to do - it's slightly
orthogonal, so feel free to drop that part of the patch if it's not
interesting.

They also appear when upgrading an etch system to lenny, which makes

Methods to reproduce:

(1) take an etch system
(2) update udev to the lenny version
(3) update makedev to the lenny version

The error messages do not happen when the system is rebooted after
(2), makedev in this case correctly detects the situation.

Bug#508397: Bug#509874, #508397: undefined reference to umount2 on ia64

2009-01-03 Thread Simon McVittie
I'm working on this bug at the Cambridge BSP, using
git://git.debian.org/users/smcv/nmu/dietlibc.git to store my work in
progress.

The four families of architecture turn out to be:

* i386, arm, etc. have umount with 1 argument and umount2 with 2 arguments
* amd64 and hppa only have umount2 with 2 arguments
* alpha has oldumount with 1 argument and umount with 2 arguments
* ia64 only has umount with 2 arguments

I've redone my patch to avoid explicit arch-dependence in syscalls.s/*,
and used the attached test case to verify that on i386, amd64 and alpha,
my work-in-progress dietlibc makes the same syscalls as glibc. On ia64
it may or may not be doing the right thing - strace produces confusing
output for both glibc and dietlibc, so I'll investigate further there.

Simon
default:
diet gcc -o dietumount umount.c
strace ./dietumount /foo
strace ./dietumount /foo 1
gcc -o mcumount umount.c
strace ./mcumount /foo
strace ./mcumount /foo 1
#include sys/mount.h

int main(int argc, char **argv)
{
if (argc  2)
  return umount2(argv[1], atoi(argv[2]));
else
  return umount(argv[1]);
}

From upstream homepage:
The goal of the FreeHEP library is to encourage the sharing and reuse of Java
code in High Energy Physics. Although some of the code is fairly specific to
HEP, other code is more generic and could be used by anyone. To maximize reuse
we strive to keep the dependencies between various packages in the FreeHEP
library to a minimum, so you can use which ever parts interest you without
being forced to use the entire library.

Actually all the different freehep-libs have to be packaged separately, but I
didn't want to open an RFP for every single one.

Bug#508032: DBus plan for Lenny

2009-01-03 Thread Luk Claes
Matthew Johnson wrote:

 Opinions?

Please start preparing things in unstable, so we can have a further idea
of the impact and how to solve the remaining bits, TIA.

Cheers

Luk

Bug#510157: winff: Can't run ffmpeg

2009-01-03 Thread Paul Gevers
tags 510157 + wontfix

It seems that you are running a version of ffmpeg from experimental, or
self-compiled, please read the /usr/share/doc/winff/README.Debian file.
The current version of the presets in winff *should* work with the
unstable version of ffmpeg. More specifically, the presets supplied are
compatible with libavcodec version 51. I will update winff when an
updated version of ffmpeg enters unstable. As winff is still usable with
other versions of ffmpeg after minor user intervention I do not consider
this bug severe.

Should dillo need to be removed, building claws-mail without the dillo-plugin
 is simple.

Also, I'm not sure if that would help claws-mail, but there seems to be

The legend function in 3.0 works in a completely different way and
doesn't have to wait for gnuplot output.

Thanks for the info. I am hereby tagging the bug report wontfix. The
octave2.1-forge will be removed from Debian post-lenny.

Bug#510582: etckeeper: maybe /etc/nologin should not be ignored by default

2009-01-03 Thread Joey Hess
Gian Piero Carrubba wrote:
In the last debian releases /etc/nologin is just a symlink to
/var/lib/initscripts/nologin, so it should exist for regular behaviour
of the nologin feature. IMHO, a better default is to include it in the
repository so to recreate it if needed.

The state of /etc/nologin is sorta confusing:

* nologin(5) still claims that /etc/nologin is the flag file whose existance
controls nologin, not mentioning that it´s a symlink to a file that may
not exist. rcS(5) does mention that, but it's not the place many
  people will look.

* /etc/init.d/rmnologin still has comments indicating it removes
/etc/nologin, even though it doesn't, instead removing the file in
  /var.

* Of all the systems running sid I surveyed, none currently had a
/etc/nologin file or symlink. This includes one that was cleanly installed
  less than a month ago.

* initscript's postinst creates the /etc/nologin symlink on initial
  install, and on upgrade.

* shutdown unlinks /etc/nologin. The easiest way to see this happen
is to run shutdown -k now. In other circumstances, it will open
/etc/nologin for write. This can remove the symlink and replace it
  with the file.

* As a test I reinstalled initscripts, letting it recreate the symlink.
Then I rebooted. /etc/nologin was gone again. I'n not 100% sure what
does the deed, but I suspect it's shutdown(8).

So, from the POV of etckeeper, if it tracks /etc/nologin in revision
control, the file will be constantly removed, deleted, change from a
symlink to a regular file, etc. Lots of noise. Also, etckeeper doesn't
really guarantee it preserves every file in /etc that the system needs
for operation. Other noisy yet possibly essential gunk like
/etc/blkid.tab, /etc/ld.so.cache, etc is also ignored. If /etc/nologin
were a stable symlink as (parts of) the system seem to intend it to be,
I'd agree with you, Gian.

From the POV of Debian system coherency and comprehensability,
/etc/nologin seems to be a mess that someone should perhaps finish
cleaning up?

Bug#510348: Dillo removal

That's a fairly hasty decision and a severe regression to existing
users given that about three percent of all popcon users have dillo
installed and about one percent use it frequently.

I did check popcon before adding my hint.

A 30 second peek into the rules files shows that there's even a
configure option to disable SSL support...

It also seems to be gtk1.2, which was the other reason for removal. I'm
not sure that the requirement to bring in gtk1.2 helps the case for a
lightweight browser, especially as we're trying to remove gtk1.
