It generates more than 30 warnings when building my package, including PHP warnings written to the substvars file. Can you post those warnings? Just to be clear: I'm not at all wishing to diminish your work, and it will no doubt improve - I'm just arguing that this is not something we should be raising Lintian Warnings about at this point if people are not using it. It needs more time before it can be generically usable and before we can claim that it's a problem if your package is not using it. during a test with piuparts I noticed your package failed to purge.
According to policy 7.2 you cannot rely on the depends being available
during purge, only the essential packages are available for sure.
Filing this as important because a.) it's a clear policy violation (to
not clean up at purge) b.) having a piuparts clean archive is a release
goal since lenny and c.) this package being piuparts buggy blocks
packages depending on it from being tested by piuparts (and thus
possibly the detection of more severe problems).

Thanks for this useful helper, and for the new phpcomposer trick.
Following the /usr/share/doc/pkg-php-tools/README.* advices can lead to
actually use the ${phpcomposer:description} or ${phppear:summary}
variables, but they are not substituted on the changes file, leading to
hardly readable informations being acknowledged by ftp-master, attached.
Yes, this is not fixable on the pkg-php-tools side (thus depending on
the corresponding wontfix bug on the dpkg side). And I still think
that using those two substvars is better (when the upstream
description is meaningfull enough) than diffing from upstream. But you
are free to not use them.
