Marco d'Itri wrote:

Can you check why /lib/udev/ide.agent is not working?
Add some echo statements and try to run it like:

DEVPATH='/devices/pci:00/:00:0f.1/ide2/1.1' /lib/udev/ide.agent

(Use the right $DEVPATH for hdg.)

Ok, it seems to be the calculation of the device name:

+ '[' -z /devices/pci:00/:00:0b.0/ide3/3.0 ']'
+ device=3.0
+ drive=0
+ bus=3
++ printf hd%x 16
+ name=hd10
+ procfile=/proc/ide/hd10/media
+ wait_for_file /proc/ide/hd10/media
+ local file=/proc/ide/hd10/media
+ local timeout=
+ '[' '' ']'
+ timeout=120
+ local count=120
+ '[' 120 '!=' 0 ']'
+ '[' -e /proc/ide/hd10/media ']'
+ sleep 1

I came up with the following code that works fine in Bash, although I
don't know whether substring expansion is a Bash extension. It does work
fine when I 'set -o posix', though:

--- ide.agent.orig 2005-11-26 12:58:16.0 +
+++ ide.agent   2005-11-26 13:25:57.0 +

+index=$(($bus * 2 + $drive))
+name=hd${driveletters:$index:1}
 procfile=/proc/ide/$name/media

 wait_for_file $procfile

If this turns out not to be portable to other shells, it might be easier
to use readlink to read the target of the /sys/$DEVPATH/block symlink:

 $ link=$(readlink /sys/$DEVPATH/block)
 $ echo ${link##*/}
 hdg

Ok, beagle now works fine. :)

Is it possible to make the dependancy on the whole of Evolution into a
Suggests rather than a Depends? I don't use Evolution and so I would
prefer not to have to install it to use Beagle.

Ideally I guess Beagle would just depend on the libraries necessary to
access the Evolution data files, but I suppose Evolution is not (yet)
modular enough to allow this?

I have just noticed that this prevents ntpd from working at all:

After restarting ntp-server, ntpd picks peers from pool.ntp.org and

Package: zynaddsubfx
Version: 2.2.1-1
Severity: grave
Justification: renders package unusable

I get a segmentation fault when exiting the program. Subsequently, it
dies on startup. File - Settings... also causes a segfault.

Having rebuilt with DEB_BUILD_OPTIONS=noopt,nostrip, I am unable to reproduce
the startup segfault; however I have attached backtraces of the other
segfaults:

 * bt.1 from the Debian-supplied package, when exiting
 * bt.2 original package, when accessing File - Settings...
 * bt.3 rebuilt with noopt,nostrip, when exiting

Bug#309653: nautilus: Icons for an open folder don't revert to closed form when the folder is closed

2005-05-18 Thread Sam Morris
Package: nautilus
Version: 2.8.2-2
Severity: normal

In spacial mode, when the window for a folder is open, the icon of the
folder in the parent window is drawn in a different, 'open' style. For
some reason, when the child folder's window is closed, the icon no
longer reverts to its original style.

I think this only started a few days ago. Navigating into a folder in browser
mode doesn't seem to trigger this bug.

2005-05-19 Thread Sam Morris
Package: azureus
Version: 2.3.0.0-2

The MimeType entry in azureus.desktop doesn't do anything unless you
call update-desktop-database from the postinst script. dh_desktop can
take care of this for you.

Bug#307332: azureus: Azureus should call update-desktop-database in postinst/postrm

2005-05-19 Thread Sam Morris
Shaun Jackman wrote:
 Which desktop environments use update-desktop-database?
Experimentation shows that KDE does not. update-desktop-database does
not have a man page (bug: #284831) so I'm not sure what this utility
 actually accomplishes.
Basically, it indexes the MimeType information from
$XDG_DATA_DIRS/applications/*.desktop into
$XDG_DATA_DIRS/applications/mimeinfo.cache.

The freedesktop.org Desktop Entry Specification[0] has more info at
http://standards.freedesktop.org/desktop-entry-spec/desktop-entry-spec-0.9.4.html#mime-caching

I assume that anything implementing the Desktop Entry Spec requires, or
will require in the future, the use of the mimeinfo.cache file. In
Sarge, this includes Gnome 2.8. On my system, Gnome didn't know that
Azureus could open application/x-bittorrent files until I ran
update-desktop-database, hence the bug report. ;)

XFCE 4 and Rox also use the spec, though I don't know if they use
mimeinfo.cache. I actually though that KDE 3.3 used it; perhaps its
implementation was incomplete until KDE 3.4 (or later? I haven't used
KDE for a while so I'm not up to speed on such things).

 Cheers,
 Shaun

Bug#347613: totem: Please split the mozilla plugin into a separate package

2006-01-11 Thread Sam Morris
Package: totem
Version: 1.2.1-1
Severity: wishlist

I would like to have a way to install Totem without having to install
the Mozilla plugin. Currently the plugin is too unstable for real use;
it rarely plays anything, never manages to successfully complate playing
anything, and causes the browser to crash when browsing away from a page
where it was activated.

Currently I am using dpkg-divert to move libtotem-mozilla.so out of the
way, but having the plugin in a separate totem-mozilla-plugin package is
a better solution.

Bug#347803: xserver-xorg: Improved xorg.conf.5x man page mentions XF86MiscSetGrabKeysState(3x)

Here is a patch to improve the xorg.conf.5x man page. The manual should
mention the API that display-locking programs should use to disable the
grab-killing keys, that are enabled with AllowDeactivateGrabs and
AllowClosedownGrabs.

Bug#347803: Patches to document XF86MiscSetGrabKeysState

2006-01-12 Thread Sam Morris
These patches document XF86MiscSetGrabKeysState. I don't know if
AllowClosedownGrabs and AllowDeactivateGrabs affects the other XGrab*
functions; if so, then the text added to XGrabServer and XGrabKeyboard
should be added to those man pages as well.

Bug#336611: shorewall: Does not disable ipv6 at boot

2005-12-16 Thread Sam Morris

Lorenzo Martignoni wrote:

but, as you can see, on my own system ipv6 seems to be disabled
correctly.

What happens on your system if you clear all firewall rules and policies
and then issue a shorewall start?

-- lorenzo

Ok, the recent kernel-image-2.6.8-i386 security update gave me an
opportunity to double check this. The output of 'ip6tables --list' after
booting up shows that ACCEPT is the policy for all three chains. I am
attaching the shorewall-init.log.

Running 'shorewall start' does not change this (Shorewall Already
Started). Running 'shorewall restart' does correctly set the chains'
policy to DROP.

Is it possible that the ipv6 kernel modules are not loaded when
shorewall is started, and so shorewall doesn't bother running ip6tables
to set the default policy?

Bug#337685: nvidia-kernel-source: problems with kernel 2.6.14

2005-11-05 Thread Sam Morris
Package: nvidia-kernel-source

The nvidia driver seems to no longer register with the class system.
/sys/class/nvidia does not exist, and I think this causes udev to no
longer create the /dev/nvidia* device files. If I create them manually
before starting the X server then there are no problems.

Bug#337685: worked around

2006-01-02 Thread Sam Morris
retitle 337685 doesn't create /dev/nvidia* device files with linux = 2.6.13
thanks

This has been worked aroundin nvidia-kernel-common 20051025+1:

  * Add script to make devices now that sysfs is GPL only (=2.6.13)
Thanks to Rob Sims [EMAIL PROTECTED]
(closes: #334531, #322021, #331465, #335398)

However strictly speaking this is still a bug in nvidia-kernel, and
leaving it open may help those who install a recent 2.6 kernel on
Sarge to diagnose the problem.

Bug#336791: workaround

2006-01-02 Thread Sam Morris

I have been hit by this since upgrading to xserver-xorg 6.9.0.dfsg.1-1.
I found the solution in GNOME and XKB: looking at the issues
http://gswitchit.sourceforge.net/gnome_xkb_tsh.pdf:

XKeyboardConfig (X.Org 7.x.x?)

Users have to update their X server configuration file (XF86Config or
xorg.conf) with the line

  Option XkbRules base

and keep it there (some distributions, like Fedora Core, perform
maintenance of this file during the upgrade procedures). Though, it is
possible to build xkeyboard-config in the “compatility” mode
(–with-xkb-rules-symlink option) to workaround this issue.

The XkbRules option defaults to 'xorg'. Changing it to 'base' restores
the additional options to gnome-keyboard-properties. However, attempting
to change the options just generates two error dialogs per click:

Error activating XKB configuration.
It can happen under various circumstances:
- a bug in libxklavier library
- a bug in X server (xkbcomp, xmodmap utilities)
- X server with incompatible libxkbfile implementation

X server version data:
The X.Org Foundation
6090

If you report this situation as a bug, please include:
- The result of xprop -root | grep XKB
- The result of gconftool-2 -R /desktop/gnome/peripherals/keyboard/kbd

gnome-settings-daemon outputs:

** (gnome-settings-daemon:23475): WARNING **: Could not activate the XKB
configuration

The output of the two commands in the error message is:

_XKB_RULES_NAMES_BACKUP(STRING) = base, pc101, us, ,

and

 layouts = []
 model =
 overrideSettings = false
 options = [compose compose:rwin]

respectively.

Bug#345436: Can't switch virtual consoles with Ctrl+Alt+Function keys when XkbRules is set to 'base'

2006-01-02 Thread Sam Morris
While investigating #336791 [0] I found that if I have XkbRules set to
'base', instead of the default 'xorg' [1], The Ctrl+Alt+Function key
chord no longer switches between virtual consoles. Instead it is passed
through to my X clients; for example, Ctrl+Alt+F1 makes xterm beep and
print the 'P' character.

I am not experiencing the other symptoms mentioned by the reporter (?
and / key, AltGr key not working).

[0] http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=336791

[1] As recommended by GNOME and XKB: looking at the issues
http://gswitchit.sourceforge.net/gnome_xkb_tsh.pdf; is using 'base'
sound advice, or should libxklavier be fixed to work with the 'xorg'
setting?

Bug#336791: Is this really a bug in libxklavier?

2006-01-02 Thread Sam Morris
I have noticed that the 'layout options' are only hidden from
gnome-keyboard-properties: my right Windows key still functions
correctly as compose.

Since setting XkbRules to 'base' basically breaks the operation of
XKEYBOARD completly and triggers other, far more serious errors[0], I
don't think it's a good option for a workaround after all.

Instead, I think this might be a bug in libxklavier--it is merely
failing to report the existance of the (correctly working) layout
options to gnome-keyboard-properties.

And when it is set to xorg, does everything work fine?

Yes, except for the XKEYBOARD related issues with #336791. For now, I am
using 'xorg' since switching virtual consoles is more important to me
than configuring the compose key. :)

Bug#339752: imapproxy: 'Doing a peer verify' syslog message is not an error

2005-11-18 Thread Sam Morris
Package: imapproxy

Severity: minor

When imapproxy connects to an imap server using TLS, it logs the message
'Doing a peer verify' when verifying the server's certificate. The
message is logged at LOG_ERROR, but it should be LOG_INFO or even
LOG_DEBUG. I attach a patch that changes this.

Bug#402248: wodim: OPC fails, crashing my machine

I've been trying to burn a DVD this evening... growisofs fails with the
error at bug #402240), and I can't get wodim to work either.

My burner is a Pioneer DVR-109.

The first few times I simply got errors such as:

wodim: Please properly read the error message above.

The last two times I tried, the following messages are printed
(transcribed by hand so may not be 100% accurate):

Whereupon my entire system locks up--mouse cursor stops moving, machine
does not respond to network queries, etc.

My kernel is linux-image-2.6.18-3-k7 version 2.6.18-7: Linux version

IIRC the command I was using to burn was: genisoimage *.avi | wodim

(BTW, what is the correct severity for this kind of bug?)

Bug#402260: gossip: Quits with symbol lookup error when I receive a message

2006-12-08 Thread Sam Morris
Package: gossip,libnotify1
Version: gossip/0.19-2,libnotify1/0.4.3-2
Severity: serious
Justification: dependencies not tight enough (rendering package unusable)

-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-

When I receive a message, Gossip quits. The following is printed to the
console:

gossip: symbol lookup error: gossip: undefined symbol:

This symbol is not present in libnotify1 from testing or unstable, but
it is present in version 0.4.3-2 from experimental. I guess that
gossip (in experimental) should depend on libnotify1 (= 0.4.3-2) and
that libnotify1 should have its shlibs file updated accordingly.

Ignore the DVD+RW failure: Eduard very kindly discovered that -format
failed because of a bug in wodim (fixed on trunk in r604) and I am once
again able to burn DVD+RWs. :)

Bug#387095: gstreamer0.10-alsa: Patch to fix upstream bug 'ALSA emu10k1 mixer tracks are wrongly classified as playback tracks'

Package: gstreamer0.10-alsa

There is currently a bug in how gstreamer interprets the properties of
various alsa mixer controls that makes the GstAlsaMixer abstraction
fairly useless on emu10k1 (SB Live/Audigy) and similar cards.

The upstream bug is at http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=336075.

The patch has been accepted upstream, please consider applying the patch
attached to the bug until a new release is made.

There is currently a bug in gnome-volume-control that prevents it from
handling the case where multiple GstMixerTracks with the same name
exist. This makes the GNOME mixer useless with sound cards such as the SB
Live, Audigy and so on.

The upstream bug is at http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=313495.
Would you please consider applying the patch attached to the bug?
Unfortunately (due to a delay in getting the gstreamer patch applied)
the patch missed the window for 2.16, and I really don't want to have to
go *another* six months without a working mixer. :)

This is true, but for a rather arcane reason only: smart-notifier depends on
python2.4-dbus, which only exists now in the archive as a virtual package
provided by python-dbus, which depends on python (= 2.4), thus ensuring
that for any user upgrading from sarge, python 2.4 will be installed and
 configured before smart-notifier is.

Maybe not... I still see a python2.4-dbus in testing:
packages.debian.org/python2.4-dbus. Or doesn't this matter because it
no longer exists in unstable?

I think that the additional processing of wtmp.1 must be left in to take

Package: flashplugin-nonfree

I installed version 7.0.63.8 today but the update-flashplayer script
failed to complete. It appears the md5sum of the package has changed.

Strangely, aptitude didn't retry the failed configuration attempt; it
seems that the package's postinst does not exit with a failure status
when the upgrade script fails. If I hadn't noticed this then I would be
unknowingly left with the old version installed.

Bug#387263: Thoughts on installer packages

2006-09-14 Thread Sam Morris
The approach I have taken with 'installer' packages in the past is to
try to make them behave as close as possible to 'real' packages.

That is, the data for the package is downloaded, verified and unpacked
in the package's postinst. If the process fails, the postinst exits with
a failure status. This causes dpkg to realise that the package
installation failed (and from the user's point of view, it has--the
files that the package contains aren't on the user's system).

The user now knows to try to install the package again, and in fact this
will occur automatically the next time they install something with apt.

I definitely believe that 'silently' failing is absolutely the wrong
thing to do in this situation. A lot of packages print unnecessary
messages in their maintainer scripts; I can't be the only one who
glances at the output, looks at my prompt (I have a green smiley face if
the previous command exited successfully, and a red frownie if not) and
then closes the terminal window. In this case the 'installation failed'
message was lost in a sea of other messages.

While compiling apache2-mpm-itk on sarge, I got a build failure about a
missing symbol in libapr. I guess this because I have the older version
of libapr from sarge installed.

I think that all of apache2's build-dependencies should be added to
apache2-mpm-itk's build-dependencies. They are:

 debhelper (= 4.1.16), dpatch, lsb-release, libaprutil1-dev,
 libapr1-dev (= 1.2.7-6), openssl, libpcre3-dev, libtool

How is this even possible? You'd have to at least backport Apache 2.2, then?
(Either that, or hack an apache2-src-like tree into place and fetch the
Apache 2.0 patches.) Either way, I'm not sure if this is a scenario I'm very
likely to be supporting out-of-the-box anytime soon :-)

Originally I installed apache2-src from unstable and tried to build
directly; that's how I ran into this bug.

I decided instead to backport apache2, apr and apr-util. It only takes a
few minutes since the build-dependencies are all available in either
sarge or on http://backports.org/.

I think the best way to solve this would be to get the apache2-src
package to include a minimal debian/control file including apache2's
build-dependencies. Then apache2-mpm-itk could simply call
dpkg-checkbuilddeps during the package build process.

OTOH, the ITK MPM is not very well known or highly demanded, and Etch
will be out soon making this bug obsolete, so feel free to tag as
wontfix--I'm sure anyone else brave enough to try to backport it to
sarge will also be clever enough to search the BTS if they run into
problems. :)

Bug#398481: libapache2-mod-php5: Dependency on apache2-mpm-prefork prevents use with apache2-mpm-itk

2006-11-13 Thread Sam Morris
Package: libapache2-mod-php5

-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-

Because of the versioned dependency upon apache2-mpm-prefork, it is not
possible to use libapache2-mod-php5 with the apache2-mpm-itk package. I
tried altering apache2-mpm-itk to Provide apache2-mpm-prefork, but this
is no good as the dependency is versioned.

Apache MPMs seem to be divided up into two types: single-threaded and
multi-threaded. I think the best way to solve this problem would be to
make the various apache2-mpm-foo packages Provide the virtual packages
apache2-mpm-singlethreaded or apache2-mpm-multithreaded as appropriate;
then libapache2-mod-php5 can depend on apache2-mpm-singlethreaded.

Bug#334946: chkrootkit: MySQL threads false positive: me too

2006-11-15 Thread Sam Morris
I just had the same experience as Lionel on a machine running sarge,
with chkrootkit 0.46a-2bpo1 (from backports.org).

The cron job complained about 1 hidden process, however running 'chkproc
-v -v -p 3' by hand doesn't reveal anything. Without '-p 3' it complains
about mysqld, java, imapproxyd, named and beam (from erlang) being
hidden. Having checked all of them it seems they are just threads of
other processes that chkrootkit knows to ignore when '-p 3' is
specified.

Perhaps we're just seeing the result of a race to read a process'
information from /proc before it exits?

Yes

 2) In Edit Plugins, is Mail Notification activated?

There is no Mail Notification plugin, however there is New Mail

Perhaps mail-notification cannot see Evolution because of changes in

I'm not sure exactly which package I should be reporting this bug
against, so please bear with me. :)

My problem: web pages that ask for the 'courier' font look ugly. The
font is very blurry, and lines that should be straight are not. I am
attaching a picture of what the rendering looks like.

As far as I can tell it's not actually courier that is being selected to
draw the text:

 $ fc-match courier
 NimbusMonL-Regu.pfb: Nimbus Mono L Regular

 $ locate NimbusMonL-Regu.pfb
 /var/lib/defoma/fontconfig.d/N/NimbusMonL-Regu.pfb

I would expect Courier New to be selected instead.

I have two sensors on a vertical panel. I can set the height to 35

the next time, it is re-set to 42 pixels. Maybe some automatic stuff
 going on?

Perhaps the graph height setting is being reset when the applet launches
up instead of being restored from gconf. Any idea, Alex?

Bug#375179: sensors-applet: NVidia support

Please include the README.Debian instructions and a configuration tip
 if possible. Thanks!

Already done, I'm just waiting for the package to be uploaded. :)

WRT configuration, I think I am in the same boat as you. nvclock is able
to read my sensors:

-- Sensor info --
Sensor: Winbond W83L785R
Board temperature: 78C
GPU temperature: 60C
Fanspeed: 0 RPM
PWM duty cycle: 0.0%

But neither nvidia-settings nor sensors-applet are able to read the
sensors. I'm forwarding this to upstream in case anyone else has
reported this... I'll take a closer look myself when I have some spare
time. :)

Bug#394462: apache2: Obsolete 000-default symlink not removed on upgrade

2006-10-21 Thread Sam Morris
Package: apache2
Version: 2.2.3-2
Severity: normal

-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA1

Having upgraded to Apache 2.2, I was left with two symlinks left in
/etc/apache2/sites-enabled:

 lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 36 2006-10-21 12:51 000-default -
/etc/apache2/sites-available/default
 lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 36 2006-02-08 21:23 default -
/etc/apache2/sites-available/default

Running 'a2dissite default' left me with the 000-default symlink, so it
appears that the name of the symlink for the default site is no longer
special-cased to start with '000-'. If this is the case, then the old
symlink is cruft and should be removed when upgrading to Apache 2.2.

Since upgrading to s-j 2.16 I haven't been able to launch s-j. I get the

Stepping through the code, it appears that the call to

NULL, so this may perhaps be the fault of nautilus-cd-burner.

Bug#394138: ITP: vmware-package -- utility for building Vmware related Debian packages

2006-10-21 Thread Sam Morris
You might be interested in checking out some of the work I did on
packaging vmware. Debian diffs are available from
http://robots.org.uk/debian/unofficial/vmware/.

I tried to integrate as much with Debian as possible. Easy stuff
included desktop entries, doc-base registration, and using existing
packages where they already exist in Debian (e.g., point the user at
dhcp3-server instead of shipping VMware's modified version).

Harder stuff included network setup, and replacing the init script with
if-{pre-post}-{up,down}.d scripts, which allows the user to configure
their virtual networks by editing /etc/networking/interfaces.

The biggest problems I had were:

  * ifupdown fails to handle the failure of
if-{pre,post}-{up,down}.d scripts. Instead, the interface is
blindly set into the target state.
  * VMware seem to make a lot of modifications to the libraries they
use, and some of them are no longer binary compatible. Getting
vmware to work at all without segfaulting took a lot of trial
and error. In the end it works, but the user's GTK theme is not
applied to vmware's controls.

Bug#394765: nautilus-open-terminal: Doesn't work when preferred terminal application is set to GNOME Terminal

When GNOME Terminal is set in Preferred Applications, the command string
is set to 'gnome-terminal --working-directory=%f'. This seems to break
nautilus-open-terminal: all terminals open in my home directory rather
than in the selected directory.

A workaround is to set a custom terminal command of 'gnome-terminal'.

So, it seems that libXNVCtrl can't read the sensors on our cards. I'm
not sure about how best to contact upstream (NVIDIA) about this.

What is your card's make and model, BTW? Mine is a Gigabyte GV-N68128DH
(Geforce 6600).

Assuming the code to read sensors from nvclock is reasonably clean, it
should be possible to replace sensors-applet's nvidia-sensors module
with one that uses the nvclock code, but that is a task for another
day. :)

Bug#396281: Outdated info in /usr/share/doc/mplayer/README.Debian

2006-10-30 Thread Sam Morris
Package: mplayer
Version: 1.0~rc1-2
Severity: normal

-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA1

The README.Debian states if you live in country where using libdvdcss code
is not illegal, you may install it using the script
/usr/share/doc/libdvdread3/install-css.sh, however this file does not
exist.

I suggest changing it to: if you want to play encrypted DVDs, see the
file /usr/share/doc/libdvdread3/README.Debian. This file contains
up-to-date instructions on how to obtain libdvdcss2.
