Re: mirror

1996-08-02 Thread Ricardo Kleemann
Hi!

First, thanks for the pointers... But I'm still having problems.
I've done an unpack and install on mirror-2.8-0.deb (that's the version
that I have here for 0.93), but there's nothing under /etc/mirror (as a
matter of fact, that directory didn't even exist). There's also no
README.debian under /usr/doc/examples/mirror.

I've run into problems unpacking newer version packages into 0.93 because
my system is a.out and has old libraries. As a matter of fact, I've
actually killed some of my apps (like emacs, for example), because the
unpack changes things before checking dependencies, it looks like. So
I've killed some stuff by attempting to upgrade packages... :(

Where can I get sample copies of the mirror package "ftp.debian.org" and
also the README for mirror?

Thanks,
Ricardo

- dpkg-ftp is a separate program under projects/experimental (chek withint
the zgrep ls-lR.gz (only 100Kb ;-)

- yes dselect will do itif you have all or just what you know you need.
My experience is that you never now exactly all the dependencies so if you
don't have all Anyway you can install partially with dselect, and if
you don't have all what you need to resolve the dependencies, just switch
to the next virtual console (-Fn) and ftp the missing package. Then
switch back and resolve the problem within dselect.

- Also, If dpkg-ftp is an option for you, maybe mounting NFS the whole
thing is also viable (check the mirrors page).
good luck!

The latex related packages were not in 1.1.2
You can find the changes in Changelog under /buzz-updates/..
If you read the messages will notice that stable, Debian-1.1.x and
Debian-1.1-fixed _always_ are just links to the "real" files, no matter
what the value of "x". You can zgrep ls-lR.z at the root to check.

It is meant to be used from within _dselect_. It gives you a new line in the

What's wrong with ncftp? Maybe your networking is not setup correctly.

Depends on how many files and directories you select in the mirror parameter

Sure, see the example /etc/mirror/packages/ftp.debian.org, but please not
that it was written with the old directory structure in mind.

Yes.

problems with talk and ytalk

1996-08-02 Thread Daniel Quinlan
I'm not sure if this is a bug or not so I'm not reporting it as one
yet.

1. Both ytalk and talk work talking on the same machine.
2. Neither ytalk nor talk will talk to other machines.
3. talk just sits (no talk request is transmitted), ytalk prints an

   find_daemon: recv() failed
   Connection refused

   sendit: recv() failed
   Connection refused

   sendit: recv() failed
   Connection refused

4. mesg has been set to `y', so that's not it.
5. I can receive talk requests from other machines, but cannot accept
   them.
6. The machines I am trying to talk to are an OSF/1 2.1 machine,
   a Solaris 2.4 machine, and a Linux box running RedHat 3.0. The
   RedHat box also has the same problem.

Either I'm clueless or something is wrong with Linux talk. I'm aware
of the various flavors of talk, but ytalk should be able to talk to
most of them. Actually, Linux `talk' should be able to talk to all
common flavors of talk.

I, too, had some frustrating interaction with I-Connect, but Simon explained

No dpkg-ftp provides a 'ftp' method for dselect. Install dpkg-ftp, start
dselect and go in the 'Access' screen. You'll see a new installation

mail-delivery-agents?

1996-08-02 Thread Dale Scheetz
The current way I manage my e-mail involves using popclient to get
incoming e-mail from my ISP (mail.polaris.net) to dwarf's incoming mail
folder on my machine (dwarf.polaris.net), outgoing mail is handled by Pine
using SMTP. I would like to try some other mail readers like elm and emacs
but none of these seem to be able to do SMTP and so require the presence
of a mail-delivery-agent.
I know I have heard pro and con discussions about smail vs sendmail but am
still confused. Also I hear hints that qmail (?) will soon be a Debian
package. I am a complete idiot when it comes to mail systems, so please be
simple and clear in your answer ;-)
What do I need to understand to install and use any of the available
packages?
If I am going to go to the trouble of learning to install a
mail-delivery-agent I will want to be able to filter mail to various
mail-folders based on the source of that mail. If that is not available in
the mail-delivery-agent, then point me to a package that will work with
the target mail-delivery-agent.

Thanks in advance for any help,

Dwarf

Squid started out as patches for Harvest whenever its (free) development

the same way as Apache started from NCSA's httpd. Have a look at

I'm using the webcounter module as it's neater.

Creating a debian package of apache1.1.1 is simple - I just used the
debian.* files out of the old package as a basis. That's when I started
added extras like the webcounter...

Can do. I haven't started on it yet - hopefully within the next week. A
few header files gated needs seem to be missing (like
/usr/include/netinet/ip_var.h) and I believe that libc5.3.x should have
them so I may need to upgrade parts of my system to "unstable".

The most important stuff for you will probably be the apache source code.

A better way would be to install the new server somewhere in
/usr/local. Then edit the file /etc/X11/Xserver so it refers to the
new server. It's best to install local software in /usr/local and not
in /usr.

I'm not sure, but you may need to install the package termcap-compat
for the XFree beta servers to work.

LILO vs LOADLIN (was Re: LILO and W95)

1996-08-02 Thread Lazaro . Salem
Hi

The DOS+LOADLIN solution is in my opinion a very practical and safe one. I read
"much safer than LILO" somewhere and some time ago, but I cannot recall why nor
if it has changed with the last versions of LILO for which horror histories
abound. Anybody knows?

There is however at least one situation that none of LILO or SYSLINUX can cope
with: The Compaq boxes with a PCI SCSI and or Ethernet card on board.
The problem is that Linux cannot address the PCI services on them (Ref: Linus
Torvald). This is the case, at least, for the Compaq Deskpro and the high end XL
series. There was a page on the WWW for Linux on these last.

But...DOS+LOADLIN can cope with it:

Compaq provides a DOS driver (luckily Novell Netware has the same problem as
Linux :) called MOVEPCI which re-addresses PCI services and exits. Then one can
load via MS-DOS LOADLIN. A CONFIG.SYS on top of MS-DOS 5.0
that worked for me is:

- Cut here
DEVICE=\MOVEPCI.SYS
SHEL=\LOADLIN \vmlinuz root=/dev/sda6 ro
- Cut here

This and all the variants you can imagine like(take them alone or combined)
LOADLIN from AUTOEXEC, within a menuitem (DOS 6.xx), many different kernels
and/or root on different partitions, with the kernel image on HD or FD (yes,
two moderatly large kernels + LOADLIN + MOVEPCI...fit in one FD!) and you can
of course pass old the boot parameters you one in a line or (if too long for
DOS) in a file. And if in a floppy is readable/transportable from/to any DOS
machine around (the same good point of Syslinux used on Debian).

I think LOADLIN is a good (and versatile) choice. I prefer it to LILO unless
somebody can show me a good reason to not.

P.S. Yes, I know that with Syslinux you can fit 3 kernels on one floppy + a tiny
editor (I have DOS screen editor of size=4096 bytes!)

What I have done is similar to what Susan suggest in using LOADLIN, but I
have setup a menuitem in config.sys to handle it. The line I use in the
config.sys file is:

shell=c:\loadlin.exe c:\vmlinuz root=/dev/hda6 ro

This assumes my root file system is on hda6. This way when I boot I have
the option presented to me. It is very much like LILO, but is all done
through DOS/WIN95 utilities (when I started using linux, I was more
comfortable doing it this way).

In my case, I started out (several years back) using LILO to dual-boot
DOS or Linux. But, I actually have found now that the Loadlin option
not only is more convenient for Win-95, but actually makes more sense
on a PC. The only problem is that Loadlin has some memory
limitations. But, if you use the Menu-config.sys thing with DOS, then
booting bare with the Loadlin option works great.

As far as I know, PPP must still be compiled as a module, not built-in.
Try M instead of Y for your response. It should work then.

Are you sure this is a PS/2 mouse? Does it have the cylindrical connector
or the trapazoidal 9 pin DIN? I'm not sure why the kernel says it found a
PS mouse, but it sounds like you want the serial protocal.

I use an ATI Win Turbo with Mach 64 Chip (I think). Therefore I needed
XFree86 3.1.2E (release D is expired). This is what I did and it might
also work for you:

1. Install Debian as usual, with all X stuff and the Mach64 Server.

2. Install the XFree86 3.1.2E Mach64 Server Binary (this is only the
/usr/X11R6/bin/XF86_Mach64 file!) over the old server.

Using the new server with the old libs/binaries works fine. I think it is
the best way to first install the old server and then overwrite it, so
debian thinks that the depencies are correct. Otherwise it will complain
about not having a X server installed.

50% Performance lose

1996-08-02 Thread fge
I have recently upgraded to Debian 1.1 from 0.93R6 and have noticed a big
performance drop when using the f2c program to run FORTRAN programs.

Here are the numbers:

24 secs execution time when compiled and run under 0.93R6.
30 secs execution time when compiled under 0.93R6 and run under 1.1
36 secs execution time when compiled and run under 1.1

I'm not sure about version numbers but the shared library version number for
0.93R6 is 0.11, and for Debian 1.1 the version number is 2.1.

Obviously 0.93R6 is aout and 1.1 is elf but i don't know if this is relevant.

There is no performance loss with C programs.

Any suggestions welcome.

I had the same problem a few days ago.
If you are using latex version latex-2e-4 (you can check
issuing the command: "dpgk -l latex\*") get latex-2e-7 and
mflib-1.0-8 from rex/binary-all/tex .

After a bit of study, that was the solution I was looking

By the way, there seem to be a project to develop a proxy
version of the Perl socket package (in the list of perl modules). That
could also be a solution (see on the perl web).
Anyway, it would be nice to have a "proxy ftp" method in
dselect in addition to the "ftp" method (you can't just replace
ftp...). You need it to install the system, gcc and co, so even before
being able to compile a socks version of perl (chicken and eggs ?).
I will keep you informed of my progress...

Thanks for the help...

Maybe you should try to run Latex manually to get a better error message.
But I doubt it. I would recommend you re-install the latex packages.

You can manage this with two commands (one for each host):

"ipfwadm -F -a masq -S 192.168.0.3 -D 0/0"
"ipfwadm -F -a masq -S 192.168.0.4 -D 0/0"

or:

"ipfwadm -F -a masq -S 192.168.0.0/29 -D 0/0"
(will masquerade host 192.168.0.1-192.168.0.7)

You can look at the Rules with "ipfwadm -F -ln"

The -m Option is ONLY used to display the active connections, NOT for
setting a masquerade connection. The Default Destination must be given with
a /0 netmask, or masquerading will only be used if you try to connect to the
HOST 0.0.0.0.

Re: Wingate/IPFWADM

1996-08-02 Thread Susan G. Kleinmann
Hi Tim --

I have succeeded in making ipfw going by doing 2 things:

1. Set up ipfw in the kernel.

To do this, I set these networking options (all other networking options
were not set, i.e., their value=n).
---
CONFIG_EXPERIMENTAL=y
CONFIG_NET=y
CONFIG_FIREWALL=y
CONFIG_NET_ALIAS=y
CONFIG_INET=y
CONFIG_IP_FORWARD=y

CONFIG_IP_FIREWALL=y

CONFIG_IP_MASQUERADE=y

CONFIG_IP_ALWAYS_DEFRAG=y

CONFIG_IP_ALIAS=m

CONFIG_IP_NOSR=y
CONFIG_SKB_LARGE=y
CONFIG_NETDEVICES=y
CONFIG_DUMMY=m

CONFIG_PPP=m

CONFIG_NET_ETHERNET=y
CONFIG_NET_VENDOR_3COM=y

CONFIG_EL3=m

---
I suspect I didn't have to set all of them, particularly
CONFIG_NET_ALIAS, but setting it doesn't seem to hurt much.

2. I have a line like yours in my /etc/ppp/ip-up script. Mine says:

ipfwadm -F -a masquerade -P all -S 192.168.0.2/24 -D 0.0.0.0/0

where 192.168.0.2 is the IP address of my husband's Windows machine.
I suspect the differences between your line and mine don't matter very
much.

Other than that, all I had to do was to set up the appropriate
databases on the Windows machine.

Then it just worked. If this is any help, let me (really, the list)
know. I think a lot of people are wondering how to do this.

Good luck,

What did work for me was what Bernd Eckenfels mentioned earlier (Thanks, Bernd).

Essentially,
ipfwadm -F -a masq -S 192.168.0.0/29 -D 0/0

Which will masquerade host 192.168.0.1-192.168.0.7

I tried it and it worked. As we type, I'm looking in the man pages still

There is a mini HOWTO about this problem: Linux+Win95.

As a short explanation. Boot your machine under Linux (I hope you have a
bootdisk) and edit /etc/lilo.conf accordingly. Then run lilo. Et voila.

Here's my lilo.conf

# Start LILO global section
boot = /dev/hda
compact# faster, but won't work on all systems.
delay = 50
vga=extended
ramdisk = 0 # paranoia setting
# End LILO global section
# Linux bootable partition config begins
image = /vmlinuz
  root = /dev/hda2
  label = linux
# Linux bootable partition config ends
# WIN95 bootable partition config begins
other = /dev/hda1
  label = win95
  loader = /boot/any_d.b
# WIN95 bootable partition config ends

RE: more info on PPP problem

I just finished fighting something similar. I think what's happening is that
the 'chat' section is not getting started. To test it, use the following
command (but insert your info in the right places)

pppd -connect 'chat -v "" ATDT5551212 CONNECT "" ogin: yerlogin word:
yerpassword' /dev/cua1 38400 debug modem noipdefault netmask 255.0.0.0

Use /dev/cua0 for COM1, /dev/cua1 for COM2.
Replace 5551212 with your ISP's phone#, and change it to ATm0DT if you want
the modem not to raise cain when it connects (mine's loud as heck!)

When it's done, and looks connected, issue

route add default gw 123.123.123.123

Replace 123.123.123.123 with your ISP's gateway address. If you don't know it,
they can give it to you.

This should work for diagnostic purposes, but sure is a pain to do each time.
I set up some scripts to do it all for me, works ok. Let me know if this helps,
if something needs clarification, let me know.

Good luck!
Tim

BTW, let me know if it works on your system..

Yes, I did.
I found out even more.
modprobe probes for ppp0, which is set as:
alias ppp0 ppp
alias ppp1 ppp
in the etc/conf.modules
So it seems as if kerneld think that ppp is a module or something (?)
Well, I think the ppp is loaded, but not as a module,
so how should I fix it?

I'll try it. But I think the problem has something to do with modules,
since I get an error message saying that modprobe can't find ppp0.

What I have done is similar to what Susan suggest in using LOADLIN, but I
have setup a menuitem in config.sys to handle it. The line I use in the
config.sys file is:

shell=c:\loadlin.exe c:\vmlinuz root=/dev/hda6 ro

This assumes my root file system is on hda6. This way when I boot I have
the option presented to me. It is very much like LILO, but is all done
through DOS/WIN95 utilities (when I started using linux, I was more
comfortable doing it this way).

Sure, infact I had wrote a message much like a few others with
this problem. Off hand I can't replicate the error message (for fear of
losing my connection, a serial thing if you know what I mean), but it had
something to do with not recognizing my floppy parameters. However, the
hdimage did work, though the problem wasn't fixed, I was able to boot up
the dosemu, just not from the floppy drive. :(.

How can I submit packages to be included in the distribution?

1996-08-02 Thread Christoph Lameter
We needed to produce some .deb packages when our site began utilizing debian.
We would
like to offer them to the public, but we cannot find a way to submit them
anywhere.

Could someone please tell us what to do? The documentation on how to submit
packages
or become an official maintainer are in total disarray right now. Here is a
list of
packages available from ftp.fuller.edu/Linux/debian today:

mgetty-0.99-1.deb Adds PPP autodetect to mgetty.
ppp-2.2.0fx-1.i386.deb Adds Remote configuration ability for DNS information
for dialin Win95 and WinNT users.
apache-1.1.1-1.deb Upgraded Apache Package with proxy Cache support etc.

verse-0.12.deb Daily Inspiration through a verse from the King James
Bible

Planned .deb package from our site (Please tell us if this is anywhere already
available!)
We are running a full Campus Setup here and we will produce the following
packages for our setup:
- Harvester Caching Daemon
- SmartList ListServer with Full Sendmail integration
- procmail with Full Sendmail Integration
- fwtk  Firewall Toolkit
- hylafax Fax Receive and Send with Sendmail Integration
- sac   System Accounting tools
- strobe,tcpspray   Probe other systems
- ircd  IRC Daemon
- 3270 Telnet
- Hytelnet

Power management and sleep

1996-08-02 Thread Pieter Vankeerberghen
Collegues

I installed Debian/Linux 1.1 on a Intel Endeavour P133
system. When I leave the system for a while, the screen
blacks out and the system seems to be sleeping, I guess the APM
function. -=The green led on the box blinks instead of normal behaviour.-

This sleeping is desirable, but not during long computations
when it also sleeps and stops the system.

Any pointers ? Thanks in advance.

LaTeX package was broken. Is fixed in version 2e-7. You need mflib 1.0-8
as well.

PPP not in kernel?

1996-08-02 Thread Berntsen
I've now recompiled the kernel, and I answered yes
to PPP support in 'make config'.
I've also installed the PPP package.
Anyway, when I now try to use pppd, I get an error
message saying that PPP is not supported in the kernel.
What's wrong with my setup?

XFree86 3.1.2[DE]

1996-08-02 Thread Douglas Bates
I am using a Mach 64 card (ATI Winboost, as far as I can tell) that
seems to hang when I run the XF86_Mach64 server. From various
postings to this list I gather that there is hope I will be able to
run it successfully with the XFree86 3.1.2E Mach64 server.

My understanding is that the currently available Debian X11R6 packages
are from XFree86 3.1.2 and to upgrade I will need first to install the
3.1.2D distribution from ftp.xfree86.org then to install the upgrade
files for 3.1.2E. Can anyone confirm this? I would prefer an
unnecessary upgrade.

help getting X and openwin to work?

1996-08-02 Thread Ken Gaugler
I had no luck getting X to run on my first installation of Debian
1.1 from the Gold cd from I-connect.

So I completely re-loaded the distribution, taking extra care to
resolve the dependency conflicts.

When I got to the configure packages section, I noticed in the
error message
  "dpkg - Configure returned error exit status 1"
that there were still a couple of things not installed right.

So I went back and fixed that, and everything configured fine
except the X server setup. After fixing a problem with the
mouse in XF86Config, I got X up and running fairly well. I think it
is giving me fvwm as the default window manager, and the middle mouse
button doesn't work right ( the menu flashes a lot and I cannot select
anything on that menu).

I really prefer running openwin, so I created the directory
/usr/openwin and copied all the stuff from my Slackware system over
to there (bin, lib, etc.) I can get openwin to start, display the
Linux openwin logo, but before the screen turns blue, the X-server
exits with the message
lwm: can't find library 'libolg.so.3'

That library exists in the openwin/lib hierarchy, so I think there must
be a link missing somewhere, possibly between /usr/X11/lib and somewhere.
Do you know anything about this, or can I give you any more information
to help me solve this?

Thanks!!

I do not understand the problem. If you're monitor doesn't like the colors
why don't you simply not call dircolors? Then the new ls doesn't have colors
at all.
