InfoMagic CD ROM
Just picked up the latest InfoMagic CDROM (green). It claims to have Debian 1.2 on it, but once again, there are a few problems (not like the 1.0 fiasco, though). Here's a list -- consider this the early warning system for anyone using Debian 1.2 off the infomagic cd: First, the following packages (at least) have more than one version on the cd: base-files kbd makedev util-linux man dpkg-ftp ppp tcsh xbase xlib6 Depending on the order in which dpkg finds them, you may or may not end up with the latest version. This is probably a bug in dpkg -- dpkg should not only refuse to downgrade when the -G option is specified, it should also prevent a downgrade if a newer package is installed during the current run (this would keep dpkg from installing 'xlib6_3.2-1a', then downgrading to 'xlib6_3.2-1' when they are encountered in that order, etc). Second, the following packages (at least) are on the CD, but are not the same verision as in Debian 1.2 on the debian ftp sites (hopefully the versions on the cd don't have any bugs or security holes, so that users aren't forced to immediately upgrade via ftp): dpkg makedev modconf dpkg-dev libg++27-dev libg++27 doc-linux nvi netstd xbase Of course, all the other notes about problems installing/upgrading Debian 1.2 apply as well. I also ran across another problem which I think was mentioned already -- xbase restarts xdm automatically when you're upgrading. This is *very* annoying when you've killed xdm and are upgrading from a text console. -- Scott Barker Linux Consultant [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://www.cuug.ab.ca:8001/~barkers/ (under construction) [ I try to reply to all e-mail within 3 days. DNS Request
I am trying to set up DNS on a local network at home and things are not going too smoothly. I wonder if some one is willing to correspond with me via e-mail so that I can get this thing running. I have been reading the HOWTO pages and although it seems to be well written, I believe it assumes the reader has some konwledge of DNS. I want a simple DNS to run on a two node network at home, A win95 machine, and the linux machine. I have installed DNS, and I can get nslookup to run, but since it is not on the internet, I don't get the output that is in the HOWTO documentation. I can restart DNS, and can ping all the entries in my /etc/hosts file, if this is relavent. Easy mistake. The directory where you found the resq1440.bin file also contains rawrite2.exe . Use that to write the raw floppy disk image files onto your floppy. Gary, check out the URL below for more information. It should answer all of your questions. (As a hint: You don't want to download the file directly to your diskette. You want to retrieve it to your system and then use a program called RAWRITE2.EXE to write the file to the diskette.) IP Routing Problems....
I'm having some problems getting my network connected to the Internet and I'm hoping you can help I'm pretty good at TCP/IP, but something with the routing has got me "stumped". PLEASE HELP! I've got two Linux boxes connected via a serial cable (about 50'). The first box (Box_A) is connected to my ISP via an ethernet connection. The second box (Box_B) doubles as a router to my network. So, I've got: ISP <---1---> Box_A <---2---> Box_B <---3---> rest of my network where: 1. Is Ethernet 2. Is Serial 3. Is Ethernet Without boring you with too many details (but let me know if you need them), here's my situation: 1. From the Internet, I can ping the ethernet interface on Box_A, but not the serial interface. 2. From Box_A, Box_B, or anywhere else on my network, I can ping everything else up to, but not including, the ethernet interface at the ISP. 3. From Box_A, I can ping the ISP and anywhere else on the Internet. I've got "routed" running on both Linux boxes and routes are being propogated down the line. Running "route" to view the routing table on all of my systems running "routed" shows a very full routing table. So, things are coming down the "pipe". My guess-timate of what my problem is, is that routing information to the #2 and #3 network segments is not being sent up the "pipe" to the ISP. The router at the ISP is not "learning" the routes to my network segments - it only knows the route to the physically attached segment. The router at the ISP is pretty non-configurable. It only supports dynamic routing, so the only thing that can be configured on it is the IP address of the port I'm connecting to. All routing information is supposed to be "learned" via RIP. But, it's not learning If this is my problem, do you have any ideas why? Hi, any help on this problem would be appreciated. Upon booting up X with startx, the computer can no longer communicate with the /dev/cua3, which my modem is connected to. This would probably work, but I wouldn't recommend it for terminal use; I think it's the sort used for a laplink serial cable. Pins 2 & 3 are TX and RX respectively, so they must be swapped. 4 & 5 are RTS and CTS flow control, 8 is DCD off the top of my head. So turning on RTS turns on CTS and DCD. Pin 6 is DSR, 20 is DTR. The problem with this is that if you're using RTS/CTS flow control, when RTS gets dropped, so does DCD, and your getty will log you out. I think DTR/DSR flow control would work, but this is a bit more unusual. I recommend the following; 2 -> 3, 3 -> 2: TX to RX, RX to TX 4 -> 5, 5 -> 4: RTS to CTS, CTS to RTS 6, 8 -> 20, 20 -> 6, 8: DTR to both DSR (data set ready) and DCD. 7 -> 7; ground. I've used this for a terminal connection with Linux and it works fine. I believe it works with Laplink-type programs too. hamish -- TO UNSUBSCRIBE FROM THIS MAILING LIST: e-mail the word "unsubscribe" to [EMAIL PROTECTED] . Trouble? e-mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Hey there folks. New (potential) Linux user here; having trouble getting Debian to install on my dinosaur system, and haven't been able to locate anything in the troubleshooting guides or user docs to help out. Upon booting from the Rescue floppy, everything works fine for a while (lots of failed to locate cdrom messages and such) until it gets to: Partition check: hda: hda1 RAMDisk: Compressed image found at block 0 Couldn't get a free page... out of memoryVFS: Mounted root (minix filesystem) init: cache '/etc/ld.so.cache' is corrupt At which point it goes no further. The machine is a 486-33 (intel) with 120meg IDE drive (currently formated for dos 5.0), SVGA, a few other random periphrials. The boot disk is a 3 1/2 floppy and I've tried making several just in case it was a data error of some sort. My first guess is that it's trying to make a RAM disk and then running out of memory in my paltry 4 megs of ram; however I was unable to locate any boot options for disabling this, and I have no idea if that's really it being that I know next to nothing about Linux. It is version 2.0.27 of Debian. Stupid PGP question
Is there a US PGP .deb package anywhere? I will be darned if I can locate it. I am probably staring right at the thing. I seemed to be able to find pointers to the non-us PGP but where is the US version? Re:Continued Debian Boot Problems
I don't think this is a boot floppy problem. Under Debian 1.2, the "wd" driver is in a module. You should be able to remove or reconfigure that "wd" module by booting your system with the rescue floppy, mounting your hard disk, and editing /etc/modules or /etc/conf.modules on the mounted hard disk. You can also boot directly from the hard disk by adding the "emergency" command to the boot command line. Since it says "loading device 'eth0', I surmise that you are running kerneld and you have /etc/conf.modules aliasing "eth0" to "wd". If that's not the case I don't understand how you'd get that driver, unless you built your own kernel. This is a sendmail/DNS configuration problem, an example of how to set things up: In the zone file for your domain: domain.com. IN MX 10 mx1.domain.com. host1.domain.comIN A 192.1.1.1 IN MX 10 mx1.domain.com. mx1.domain.com IN A 192.1.1.1 IN MX 10 mx1.domain.com. host2.domain.comIN A 192.1.1.2 IN MX 10 mx1.domain.com. in the /etc/mail/sendmail.cw file on host1: domain.com host1.domain.com mx1.domain..com host2.domain.com basicly you have to have an entry in the sendmail.cw file on host1 for all hosts listing host1 (or mx1 as my example above) as their primary MX host. Any ideas or pointers to where to look? As root, add the line /usr/X11R6/lib in the file /etc/ld.so.conf, and run the command ldconfig -v. This will solve the problem. bug in X-Windows?

I do'nt have succeed to repeat the bug. Sounds to me like Netscape is blocking trying to send a packet out to the net. Start it after ppp is up and running, and it should work fine. With dynamicly assigned IP addresses, the reply-to-IP part of the header in the first few packets is invalid, since it changes when the pppd negotiates your local IP from the ISP, so a response never returns. Applications will hang until they time out when this happens. __ _Karl M. Can't load xlib library problems
Hi, I'm a new user installing Debian 1.2 for the first time. I'm running into instances where I get "can't load library" errors when installing X. When I run /usr/sbin/xbase-configure (as part of the xbase install) I get the error: can't load library: libXmu.so.6 The file libXmu.so.6 is in: /usr/X11R6/lib When I run /etc/init.d/xdm start as part of the xserver install, I get: can't load library: libXt.so.6 That file is also in: /usr/X11R6/lib xlib6 seemed to install ok. Any ideas or pointers to where to look? Thanks, Ira -- TO UNSUBSCRIBE FROM THIS MAILING LIST: e-mail the word "unsubscribe" to [EMAIL PROTECTED] . Trouble? e-mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Don't trust your BIOS in dealing with the Maxtor drives. I have a 2.7 gig from them, which *seemed* to partition fine under Win 95 and Debian with just my (decidedly ancient) BIOS's settings, but actually ended up _very_ corrupted. What worked for me is to actually install Maxtor's software, and partition via their instructions (don't have the docs with me at current, but it's pretty straightforward). I checked it with PartitionMagic and fdisk, and everything seemed happy after formatting and installing Debian via the bootdisks. Another word to the wise.. don't let LILO overwrite your MBR after doing this, as that's where the Maxtor software likes to live. Still, they seem to coexist quite happily (at least for the last few months on my machine).
