-- _ _ __ _ __| |___(_) |__(_) |_ David Ernest [EMAIL PROTECTED] 2:343/[EMAIL PROTECTED] / _` / -_) | '_ \ | _| PGP: C0 03 33 31 46 96 E4 AB C2 8D BC 55 42 E3 9D FC \__,_\___|_|_.__/_|\__| IRC: nyogui -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe.
Is the game's code secure? Using the games group and setgid executables means that if the game does have holes, all you can do is trash the score files for the various games. The same is true using setuid games, but also means you could interfere with other people's games if you could a setuid games shell etc. Basically the existing systems works just fine as far as I can see. Yup, definitely. Thats why I just added users to the games group, and it worked fine, but I had to chmod the files in /etc/angband to group/all read for the game to run. (Sorry, there was no need to change permissions or ownership of any directorys despite my earlier ramblings.. Its used by Linux (maybe Unix in general) to pause screen output, so if its not being recognized thats an indication of keyboard/keymap setup problem (or angband can't intercept the interrupt for it?). So, get the source packages for all of these things, build a custom SSLeay with RSAREF linked in, build a custom apache-ssl, and call it good. [This message has also been posted.] Hello: I just installed a fresh Debian 1.3.1 Linux system. I cannot get nn (No news is good news news reader). I have the $NNTPSERVER set correctly, and also /etc/nntpserver is also correct. When I type nn, it prints two lines, one that looks like a preliminary check of my news server (it's calling the correct one), then another line that's basically the same but has (posting okay) added to the end. Then it just sits there for a very LONG time. I'm on a 28.8 modem using ppp; when nn freezes, I see the rd light continuously flashing for a long time. RE: NT and Linux
-Original Message- From: King Lee [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Wednesday, May 27, 1998 8:29 PM To: debian-user@lists.debian.org Subject: NT and Linux Hello, I got into a discussion with a system administrator of a website. The system administrator wishes to use NT because it supports software raid 5 (raid without a special controller). I thought if it works, there would be a terrible performance degradation. The system administrator said only if a disk goes down would there be a performance hit. Does anyone here know anything about The questions I have are 1. Has anyone here had any experience or knowledge about software raid. How good is it? 2. Does Linux support hardware raid 5 I think this guy is looking for an excuse not to use Linux. King Lee 1. I'm currently got a bundle of Alpha-Servers running NT 4.0. All but one of them uses hardware raid 5 (Controlled by an HSZ40 in a DEC storage works cab.) It is DEFINATELY faster than the one which has NT controlled RAID 5. Hardware controlled software controlled sets are both same sizes on each server. This difference is phenomenal. Aside from mere disk access - you should see how much CPU time is used keeping the RAID set working on the software controlled one.. I'll never setup software RAID again. 2. If Linux can see SCSI disks (which it can) it's all just a matter of plugging your SCSI cable into a hardware RAID box (such as the Digital Storage Works cabinets). The hardware controller takes care of everything. Linux will just see it as one huge disk. You will however need to spend an extra half-an-hour setting up the controller (It'll be done through a dumb terminal - and it's dead easy). Greets, The 2.1.x kernels have read (and experimental write) support for NTFS, I believe you can get NTFS for 2.0.x kernels, but it is probably not as good. I've used it occasionally at work and havn't had any problems. I haven't used it myself for a while now, but there is a loadable module that reads NTFS, prolly called ntfs.o or something silly like that. There are ICQ spoofers, which will send an ICQ message as any UNI, but I have never personally got it to work. (1) Check your /etc/ppp/peers/provider file for this line: connect /usr/sbin/chat -v -f /etc/chatscripts/provider Make sure to put the -v in there if it is not there. (2) After you run pon and it fails, examine the /var/log/syslog file. At the end of it you should see a record of the chat with your ISP. This will probably indicate the problem. Re: Stronghold Apache
There are AFAIK patches available to SSLeay to use RSAREF. There are also Apache-ssl Debian packages in non-us which can be IMPORTED to the US, but not EXPORTED again. There's also a rsaref package in non-us. So, get the source packages for all of these things, build a custom SSLeay with RSAREF linked in, build a custom apache-ssl, and call it good. Or if you don't CARE if your apache uses RSAREF since it uses SSLeay which functions the same with or without it, just grab the apache-ssl binary package. I won't tell RSA if you don't. = Okay, so I know about rsaref and I can't use it, not commercially at least. I really don't have any interest in breaking the law no matter how stupid the law is. so I've also heard of the covalent raven ssl module for apache. this option is much less expensive then stronghold (raven is ~$400 while stronghold is ~$1000) and comes as a module so I can still custom compile apache (which, believe it or not, is what I want to do. I like to know what went in to my binaries). so again, anyone using the above products on debian? any experience with this whatsoever? any advice is much appreciated. - John Kloss -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. First, I installed Debian 1.3 from CD, then immediately wrote my ppp script required to login to my server - worked great. Immediately upgraded to latest stable version, THEN immediately upgraded to hamm using autoup.sh. All went well, except now when I try to use my ppp script, it doesn't work properly. I hear it dialing the modem AND connecting, but apparently the connection only lasts a couple of seconds (if I try to telnet, I get the error message hostname lookup failure). Keep in mind that nothing has changed (to my knowledge) in regards to the ppp script file (I also checked my resolv.conf file, while contains nameserver info, etc - it's still there and still has all info). One thing - perl, data-dumper and libnet-perl are not installed yet (for some reason, perl was not selected when I ran thru dselect) Could this be the reason? Thanks in advance, Rich (assuming you are using the Debian pon/poff scripts) First of all, a couple of things should have changed. Your chatscript, and options_out file will have moved. Look in /etc/chatscripts/ and /etc/ppp/ to see the changes. One thing that I had to change was to add 'noauth' to my options_out (now /etc/ppp/peer/provider). /usr/doc/ppp/README.* will explain this. IIRC, I may have had to fiddle with the file permissions of the new files (and new directories) to get everything working (if you run pon/poff as root this doesn't matter). -- Ed -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Cut and Paste/ Xirc?
Hello everyone, I know this has been asked before, but just a quick browse of the archives, I wasn't able to find. Wished there was a grep button on the mailing list archves.:) Ok, here's my question. What are the keys or commands to use cut and paste in Xwindows? I know in WinBlows 95 it was CTL-X for cut, CTL-C for copy and CTL-V for paste. In normal terminal within Linux I know I can highlight the area with a mouse and it will put it in the buffer and hit the right mouse button to paste it. I tried this in xterm and rxvt but didn't work for me. I have a 2 button mouse configured to Emulate the Third Button with both buttons pushed, but couldn't get anything work with any of the button combos. I had just installed offix-clipboard and read the man on it and all it talks about is the other application's ways of cutting and pasting, but not how to do it. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Also, has anyone else been able to get Xirc to run in Xwindows? I haven't been able to run it at all. I keep getting an error message about the display or something. I know that isn't much help, but my machine is at home. I installed the Deb package and there were no problems or conflicts that showed up. All the dependencies were filled as far as I could tell. My system is Hamm, latest version as of the 26th of May. I have both the libc6 and libc5 libraries installed with all the different dev's also. (Libc5 is in the oldlibs config). Hamm upgrade
Thanks to the several folks who helped me with several post-upgrade problems. These were related to getting my old libc5-compiled versions of Applix and Netscape running. Although a libc6 version of Netscape is available, I wanted to not spend money for a newer Applix even if available at least at this time. The basic approach that worked was to attempt to start the application from a terminal window within kde. It might fail with a message such as can't load library 'whatever' I would then find the appropriate debian package via dpkg -S whatever then get that from the debian site and install it. After a few such iterations everything was happy. Thanks again, Richard -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I know it is very slow, but is it possible? That is really very sick and twisted to even think of such a thing... hmm I wonder why I never thought of it :) QIC tapes (FTAPE) use the floppy disk controller and are formatted like floppy disks with 'tracks' and 'sectors' and so are block replaceable. This means that they CAN hold a random access file system just like disks, only SLOWER. Don't be too sure. Most tape drives only allow to write appending to the *end* of any data already written, so even if random positioning is possible the device is fairly useless. If you have to rewrite a block on the filesystem you would not be able to go back and rewrite over where it was before without losing any data after it. Does this mean it would not be possible to write a filesystem which would exist on a tape? No. It does mean that such a filesystem (especially on a low-capacity low-bandwith device like QIC over a floppy interface) would be nearly useless. I'm speaking here from experience because I have a home-grown backup solution where I wanted to be able to write a fixed length tape label onto the beginning of each tape and rewrite it each time I added another file onto the tape. I was very disappointed to learn that this was not possible. QIC tapes have from 20 to 80 parallel tracks on them, switching tracks is done by moving the head up and down (just like the old 8 track tapes). DEC made a QIC tape drive called DEC-TAPE II that interfaced with an rs-232 link. It was random access (just like the original dec-tape), each tape holding about as much as an old 8 SSSD floppy. I remember running the dungeon (aka zork) game on an lsi-11 (pdp-11/03) machine with dual dec tape II drives. Yuchk was it slow! -- Jens B. Anyway, I am freshly installing a hamm system using the current boot disks. I have base2_0.tgz, and the rescue-driver disk images on a separate hard drive. I am doing the rest of the install via FTP. That is not the problem. The problem is that after the base install, var is virtually empty. This includes the directories that dselect needs, utmp, and many other important things. dselect fails miserably when it cannot find its methods directory and such. Anybody else with this problem?
