Controladoras SCSI
-- Salut!! +---+ |Juanjo Martinez [EMAIL PROTECTED] | | [EMAIL PROTECTED] | | -- http://juanjoms.helide.com -- | | http://www.geocities.com/SiliconValley/Horizon/8904 | | [Por favor quita 'NOSPAM' para responder] | +---+ | Debian GNU/Linux 2.0 [2.0.34]Linux Registered User #68887 | +---+

ed, i fear, we could annoy some people if we continue to discuss a non-debian-specific matter on a debian mailinglist. shouldn´t we go back to pm? Ed Cogburn wrote: A) I made up the MIMEtypes when I added those Preferences-Navigator-Applications entries, Hartmut. The important things are the suffix and which option you selected in the 'handled by' section. i was confused by the fact, that peter and you had _exactly_ the same MIMIEType for the gz case. there seemed to be a known source of that types, which i was not aware of. my own formely experiments couldn´t work, because i used ´.gz´ instead of ´gz´. blush. i´ve now finished my customization of communicator and done as follows (all tested) excerpt from ~.mime.types: #mime types added by Netscape Helper type=application/x-gzip-compressed \ desc=Gzip archive file \ exts=z,gz #mime types added by Netscape Helper type=application/x-compress \ desc=Compress archive file \ exts=Z excerpt from Netscape.ad: !*encodingFilters:\ ! x-compress : : .Z : uncompress -c \n\ ! compress : : .Z : uncompress -c \n ! x-gzip : : .z,.gz : gzip -cdq \n\ ! gzip : : .z,.gz : gzip -cdq \n and the link /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/app-defaults/Netscape - /usr/lib/netscape/Netscape.ad of course, if you´re using another netscape, eg. 4.07, then this link probably would point to another directory. B) I'm glad you got it working for you Hartmut, but guess what, I don't need to comment out those lines in Netscape.ad, nor do I need the link to app-defaults/Netscape. In fact, I don't even *have* a .../app-defaults/netscape file! Nor does NS strip the suffix on me, as reported by someone else. my experiments have shown, that in the absence of the mentioned link netscape uses its own - probably compiled in - Netscape.ad. therefore i would bet, that in one of your configuration files - xinit, xressources et alia - is a reference to netscape, which causes such behaviour. i recommend a grep ´etscape´ over such files. maybe also, that preferences.js is guilty. C) For everyone elses benifit: I'm using NS Communicator 4.6. My first version was 4.05. I had these reported problems then. In the process of trying to fix things, I added the Preferences-Navigator-Applications entries for files with *.gz and many other suffixes. At one point I was manually editing ^^ dangerous .mime.types because the entries I made were becoming corrupted for some reason. I never did get things working as I wanted, but now I can't remember the specifics, besides the corrupted .mime.types entries. When I upgraded to 4.5 the problems disappeared, and I never gave it any more thought. The upgrades preserved these entries I had made so they are still with me. well, quite recently i had to play with different versions of the communicator and wanted not to be disturbed by errors perhaps contained in the recent version. i´ve done this: since i started with communicator 4.6, i created a directory ~/ns46 and copied all netscape related directories and files of ~ to ~/ns46. then i purged the old communicator, looked, if all files had gone - don´t remember exactly if all was automatically deleted - and installed communicator 4.61. ´twas no problem, to get back my bookmarks and the addressbook. hafi

Re: Installing Linux 1.3.1
Hi friends Hi I'm a beginner in the Linux World and as my first step I have installed Debian GNU/Linux 1.3.1 in a PC 486 / 100 MHz through the floppy drive. My PC lacks of CD-ROM or network connection. Why 1.3? You could get 2.0 Anyway $ I don't know how to use the dselect command , because when I execute it , it asks me for a package file , which should be in the hard disk. How can I find those package files in the Linux CD ? Try changing the access methodthats the only thing I can think of. When you do, it will ask you for package files. I was installing my system from HD, so I never had it either. dselect worked without me giving it the path to it. $ How do I use the mount command ? I want to mount the floppy drive as a directory . Make a directory , say /floppy Then try mount /dev/fd0 /floppy The better suggestion is for you to get mtools. It's a great little package that does floppy work. $ The man command doesn't work . Is that an installation problem ? What did I do wrong? Man is a separate package, not included in the base installation. Download it, and if you can, install it. You are going to have a hard time installing most of software through the floppy.I'd suggest you get a modem...even 28.8 will do fine. I've downloaded most of packages in the system I have now, over 33.6 modem. Andrei --- Andrei S. Check out the kernel-Howto and the debian FAQ's kernel section at: http://www.debian.org/doc/FAQ/debian-faq-11.html for more info. When you type make menuconfig in the /usr/src/linux directory, one of the categories is Network Device Support. Under that, select 3COM cards and then select the 3c509 driver. I have two NICs installed. They are both the same and they are both recognized at boot. (If I were installing linux again I could use dbootstrap, but I have the feeling there's an easier way.) The boot msg doesn't have any eht0 mention or any other mention of the card. You will have to re-compile the kernel ( read the kernel HOWTO, in /usr/doc/HOWTO). The kernel howto is written for the Slackware dist. so doesn't mention the Debian way, which uses make-kpkg (man make-kpkg). For either method yoy will have to run ( in /usr/src/linux) either make config (ugh), make menuconfig (!), of if you have X running and are in an xterm, make xconfig (!!). The howto exolains this. You will then have to select your network card(s) as either modules or compile them into the kernel. While you are at it you might try making other options modules as well. Git it a go and come back here if you have more questions. 2. how would your answer change if I told you I had TWO ethernet cards I wanted to install? It would not change at all. Re: Which ISP I should use
AOL uses their own proprietary client software, so there's probably little chance it'll ever run on anything other than Windows and Mac. At this point, there's not even a way to work around the crappy client to get a direct PPP connection. Personally I use Netcom/MindSpring and ATT Worldnet on Linux without difficulty. If your printer accepts the output of some Stylus Color filters of Magicfilter you can use it (eventually you will have to do fine adjustments of GhostScript options for StylusColor device). Which FTAPE?
Thanks to recent help from Nico Galoppo Peter Makholm I have installed the crucial RPM's that I need using Alien. They work great!! Now that I know I will be able to use this system I wish to load my files from tapes. I am confused over whether I should have Ftape selected in the drivers selection screen during install or accept the package Ftape and Ftape-Utils in dselect. They are automatically selected using the Dial-Up setup option. I am using Cheapbytes SLINK CD's by the way. Should I have one of these or both? I see the config stage of dselect report that this version of Ftape is for Kernal 2.0.34. I believe the CD's automatically install version 2.0.36. Is this the problem? On my other system I compile ftape-3.04d as a module but the process I use assumes a /usr/src/linux that is not on Debian. I would then use:- modprobe zftape ; modprobe zft-compressor tar xvf /dev/nqft0 to restore. Can someone kindly point me in the right direction. Paul Clark

Andrei Ivanov wrote: Any way to defrag the partition? defrag does not seem to be working, it gives me error message: bad magic number in super block Andrei, this error also got me a while back when I tried out defrag, and as usual, reading the man page turned out to be a good idea :-) To defrag an ext2 partition you need to use the command 'e2defrag /dev/'. 'defrag' is for the minix file system which is why you get that error. Also note what the man page says about running defrag on a mounted and/or a bootable partition. Another way to defrag it (and the way I prefer) would be to copy the contents to another partition, re-format the original partition, and then copy back again. I always keep a bootable backup of my Debian partition (I use just one partition plus a swap partition), and occasionally will do the above, even though I've never found that fragmentation was any particular problem in Linux. Of course it's a good idea to run fsck on the file system first to check for and fix any errors. This mini-HOWTO gives a procedure (and a few variations of it) for copying a partition with the cp command. http://metalab.unc.edu/LDP/HOWTO/mini/Hard-Disk-Upgrade.html Tom

They are automatically selected using the Dial-Up setup option. I am using Cheapbytes SLINK CD's by the way. Should I have one of these or both? The ftape driver during install is the kernel module for the installed kernel. These (for 2.0.36) are version 2 of ftape (the 2.2 kernels have version 3.04d). The dselect packages are for a different version of ftape, 4.03pre1. I see the config stage of dselect report that this version of Ftape is for Kernal 2.0.34. I believe the CD's automatically install version 2.0.36. Is this the problem? Yes, they need to be compiled with the kernel you are using. Slink does not appear to have the ftape modules packaged for the installed kernel. On my other system I compile ftape-3.04d as a module but the process I use assumes a /usr/src/linux that is not on Debian. Install the kernel-source-2.0.36 package (or get the source for 2.0.37, the latest of the 2.0x series from one of the linux.kernel.org mirrors). With that you can either compile the kernel with the built-in older version of ftape (not recommended) or compile the kernel without ftape support and separately compile ftape-3.04d or the newer 4.0x version available from http://www.math1.rwth-aachen.de/~heine/ftape/ If you compile your own kernel, you should consider using the features of the Debian kernel-package package. Re: /etc/environment
Content-Length: 2937 Lines: 74 Howdy All! This question - though simply stated - does produce an intereting problem. Namely that there exists no *one* place a person can set system-wide environmanet variables. So far we've seen responces that indicate that Bourne-like shells will use /etc/profile by default, and that C-shell-like ones will use /etc/csh.cshrc, and that X11 uses /etc/environment. But what about zsh!? According to it's man page it doesn't make use of any of those files. So now what do we do? Ask the Systems Administrators to edit and synchronize 3, 4 or 5 files!? And then what happens when someone writes yet another shell that doesn't make use of any of those files? There's a problem here, clearly. It *could* be solved by expecting the Sys. Admins. to strictly limit which shells are available to the end-user population, but I don't think that'd go over well. We could also leave it as is and let the Sys. Admins. work it out, also a poor choice. However, there could easily be a way around all of this. What if /etc/environment comprised of a series of variable=value statements that each shell would read and use to set the environment? Doing it that way would require each shell maintainer to modify some of their scripts once and only once and for someone to write a reasonable default /etc/environment. We could quite easily expand it to allow for ~/.env[ironment] in order to make user specific changes centralized as well. Of course someone would have to write a policy guideline to issure that any new shells would conform to this new standard, but it wouldn't be that big of a deal, IMO. I've played around with something like this in the recent past and it worked fairly well - though I did it using some grissly looking enviroment variables that each shell would substitute and then read an ugly /etc/environment. It was fairly nasty looking, but functional. I'm sure we good make it much cleaner with just a bit of shell-scripting. Comments? Questions? Opinions? The 'already installed, skipping' means that you have a * in front of the package in the 'Select' screen but the package is already installed with that version on your system. fetchmail doesn't runq
I've noticed that I have to manually execute runq after fetchmail finished getting mail. Prior version of fetchmail (the one in slink) did the delivery automatically at the end of the run. Any ideas? Emacs, Netscape and Apache - together?
I have been trying to get all three: Emacs, Netscape Navigator, and Apache all working on an X-windows Linux system. I switched from Red Hat to Debian because Apache was not working on my Red Hat system, and rather than try to muddle my way through learning what was wrong, I figured okay, switch to Debian (a friend had installed Debian and Apache worked for him right out of the box). I have now become semi-experienced in installing Debian kernels, using dselect and dpkg, and have successfully gotten X-windows, Emacs, and Apache working (and ppp, whew!). However, Netscape Navigator is barfing at me, saying it cannot load libraries. I have twice reinstalled the library it most recently complains about, so the library is not corrupted. I recently spent a day installing kernel 2.0.34 with full X-windows and Emacs and web stuff, and configuring everything the way I want. I downloaded three different Netscape binaries off the Netscape site, all for Linux, in various flavors (4.06 Navigator only, 4.06 Communicator, 4.5x can't- remember-if-it-was-just-Nav-or-Communicator). After gunzipping and de- tarring them and ns-installing them, and trying to run them, they all said they could not load libXpm.so.4 (sigh). Previously, I had installed a smaller (basic) workstation and then added X-windows, and had a similar problem when I gunzipped and de-tarred (and feathered) and installed Netscape: when I tried to run it, it complained it could not load libXt.so.6 ... durn. In both cases, a library of that name was there, so I suspect this is some sort of version-compatibility problem. I feel hopelessly inadequate to the task of getting Slink off the Debian site. Among other problems, I have a 14.4K baud modem, and am totally ignorant about how to select the packages I need. My best strategy has been to take a larger than needed set of stuff for a workstation during a kernel-installation process, then delete stuff I don't want. This way, I figure I make sure I'm getting all the details that I need. Also, I can do this only when the temperature is cool; I have no air conditioner, and the installation process crashes when it's too hot. I also cannot afford to buy another CD-ROM at this time; I am standing on the edge of an abyss called soon to be homeless unless crank the old marketing telephone blitz. So what I want to do is get a Netscape Navigator (or Communicator) that will work with Debian Hamm 2.0.34. Since I make web pages for a living, including making cgi-scripts, I utterly need a working web server and a working browser (sorry, Arena crashes on me all the time) and my favorite text editor = Emacs --- and I need them on the same system! Can someone tell me where to find a Netscape Nav-or-Com for Debian 2.0.34? Thanks muchly, Wyn Snow = [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Re: can anyone access this site?
Hi, thanks to everybody for their time and reply. I am still trying to get to the ottom of this. Your replies, and the ones from my ISP -althoguh they do not offer tech support for Linux they were quite friendly and courteous- made me think it is a Java problem or my ISP address problem. I will try to add new dns server in a pppconfig. Are there any tricks to getting the java to work properly? I install navigator in my /usr//local/netscape/ directory by hand since the 3.* versions and had no problems for years, so I doubt this is the case. Here is my ldd output: bash-2.01$ ldd /usr/local/netscape/netscape libBrokenLocale.so.1 = /lib/libBrokenLocale.so.1 (0x4000e000) libXt.so.6 = /usr/X11R6/lib/libXt.so.6 (0x4001) libSM.so.6 = /usr/X11R6/lib/libSM.so.6 (0x4005a000) libICE.so.6 = /usr/X11R6/lib/libICE.so.6 (0x40063000) libXmu.so.6 = /usr/X11R6/lib/libXmu.so.6 (0x40078000) libXpm.so.4 = /usr/X11R6/lib/libXpm.so.4 (0x4008a000) libXext.so.6 = /usr/X11R6/lib/libXext.so.6 (0x40098000) libX11.so.6 = /usr/X11R6/lib/libX11.so.6 (0x400a4000) libdl.so.2 = /lib/libdl.so.2 (0x40147000) libstdc++.so.2.8 = /usr/lib/libstdc++.so.2.8 (0x4014a000) libm.so.6 = /lib/libm.so.6 (0x4018f000) libc.so.6 = /lib/libc.so.6 (0x401a8000) /lib/ld-linux.so.2 = /lib/ld-linux.so.2 (0x4000) I can't see anything wrong with this, but I'm _no_ programmer... Oh, yes, I can ftp that IP address, but I can't access that IP address in Netscape- gives me a forbidden access. I will keep guessing, and if the above had given you an idea for me to try please let me know. Otherwise, thanks for your help, damir

apt question
I'd like apt to look at my cd's before looking at the rest of the sites in my sorces.list, but while I can get it to look at one cd, I can't get it to look at the second (Official Debian CD's) If I use symlinks to repoint the Packages file to Packages.cd on the second CD, it will find the packages locally, but when I try to install, if they are on the first disk, it can't find them and errors out...is there a way to get it to ask to switch cd's like the multicd access method does? a patch perhaps? -- Josh Miller ICQ UIN: 4405266 E-Mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I found it in hamm. Why do it absent in slink and potato? I think that thing in hamm don't know how to split big potato/main into 2 images. Anyone who made cd images of potato please contact me. RE: fetchmail doesn't runq
I haven't had problems with my exim/fetchamil setup, even after moving from slink to potato. I do remember that I had to edit my fetchmailrc file at some point though becuase the syntax had changed. If you have an old .fetchmailrc that is being loaded from some directory for instance because you start fetchmail with fetchmail -f /some/dir/.fetchmailrc, you may get into trouble like described.
