Distribuciones Debian Potato 2.2
Gracias, //E.

Muchas gracias ;) M.- _ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com.

Re: Distribuciones Debian Potato 2.2
No es necesario, ya con el primero tienes lo basico si necesita mas, con apt-get puedes instalar lo que quieras solo editas /etc/apt/sources.list y quitas los comentario a la linea deseada, luego das apt-get update y con dselect escoges lo que deseas, y despues lo instalas con apt-get install x, yo lo haga asi porque con dselect sufro mucho Gracias Hola lista, En la ultima revista de Linux Actual se entrego un CD con la distribucion de Debian Potato 2.2 pero en la misma revista explican que esta distribucion consta de 3 CDs pero parece que solo van a distribuir el primero ... ¿sabeis alguno si esto es asi? De todos modos ¿de donde puedo bajarme los 2 CDs que faltan? Yo no tengo grabadora ... aunque si no hay mas remedio podria conseguir que alguien me los grabara ... pero, yo estaria mas interesado en bajarme los paquetes que faltan desde la red e ir instalandolos. Gracias de antemano y saludos. ¡Yo dejaría esto como está! Practicamente no existe programa que no dependa directa o indirectamente de la libc; si la cambias, el caos estará asegurado. Sí que existen formas para hacer coexistir varias versiones, y de hecho todos tenemos la libc5 para ciertos programas que la necesiten. Pero esto es un GRAN dolor de cabeza, así que te recomiendo olvidarte de esto. Lo que puedes hacer es apt-get source xine. Te va a bajar el código fuente ya preconfigurado para debian. Entras en el directorio y dices make -f debian/rules binary (creo) y te va a crear um paquete debian con las librerias que ya tienes instalado. Puede ser que de algunas librerías necesites las versiones -dev para que funcione la compilación; las podrás desinstalar después. Pista: mira las dependencias de este paquete y sabrás que paquetes -dev vas a necesitar, probablemente. Y si xine realmente depende de algunas características nuevas de la libc, pues estás j*did* :-) Enconces sólo puedes hacer el upgrade a testing o unstable. Buenas, tengo instalada Potato 2.2 r0 en casa y en dos máquinas en el trabajo. En casa y en una del trabajo tengo el login gráfico xdm y en la otra entro en modo texto. En las dos en las que entro en modo gráfico, no hay manera alguna de que X window me permita visualizar caracteres españoles (por ejemplo al hacer ls -l cañón, me sale ca??n), pero si me voy a consola y desde allí mato el xdm (killall xdm) y entro en gráfico con startx sí que todo funciona el español, por ejemplo, LyX tiene los menús en español, lo mismo que Abiword, etc. Como no tengo problemas con el inglés, soy profe de ello, me da lo mismo, pero ahora, para el personal de secretaría les estoy arreglando icewm (porque se parece a windows) y les hago menús y barra de tareas desde las que puedan lanzar aplicaciones de uso normal. Ellos han de entrar con algo gráfico, porque se hacen un lío con lo de los usuarios, etc. Una vez dentro, les tengo puesto staroffice, pero tarda una barbaridad en arrancar, por lo que lo que más van a usar (para escribir cartas, informes, oficios...) es abiword, pero no tienen ni idea de inglés y en icewm sale en inglés, porque entran al sistema con xdm. Lo realmente raro es que si lanzo abiword tecleándolo en una terminal rxvt o xterm sale en español, pero cuando lo coloco en los menús de icewm sale en inglés. He probado a arrancarlos tanto con (fichero /etc/X11/icewm/menu) prog AbiWord abiword abiword y lanzándolo desde una terminal: prog Abiword abiword xterm -e abiword ¿Qué mapa de caracteres carga X cuando se usa xdm y cuál el que carga cuando se usa startx? Not quite true... zombies don't ever die: they're already dead. So what are they doing there? Simple: every process returns some stuff to it's parent: time used, and a bunch of other stuff, most importantly the value 'exit()' returns. A zombie is a process which has died, but its parent has not collected that information. It has to be held until the parent collects it. With a proper parent process, it will notice the child died and call wait() and collect the return code and anything else it needs. If the parent dies without collecting the return status, the zombie is inherited by init. init is smart enough to collect the status and let the zombie go to the grave. So the bug in a 'zombie' is in the process that spawned it. Kill it, and the zombie children will go away. Most importantly, though, it is a bug and should be fixed. It's not difficult to write code that correctly reaps dead children. -- CueCat decoder .signature by Larry Wall: #!/usr/bin/perl -n printf Serial: %s Type: %s Code: %s\n, map { tr/a-zA-Z0-9+-/ -_/; $_ = unpack 'u', chr(32 + length()*3/4) . $_; s/\0+$//; $_ ^= C x length; } /\.([^.]+)/g;
Newbie Debian Networking Question (perhaps an easy one for a techie!)
Hello ! I am an 'old' redhat user but a new debian one (i installed 2.1 today) I recompiled kernel to 2.2.18 (which is good enough for my hardware). Since 2.0.x does not support my Intel NIC out of the box. During the installation i didn't configure networking (thinking it was going to be easy later)(even when i did configure the 2.2.18 kernel tosupport networking and TCP/IP) Now I did an ifconfig and my NIC is up and running (with an 10.0.0.66/255.255.0.0 ip/subnet). I can ping other hosts on the same subnet Now the question is: In red hat i had linuxconf. In debian i think i only have 'vi' ;) now.. where for god's sake do i find the networking parameters? I need to configure the Gateway and the routes (in redhat by entering linuxconf under networking... in a glimpse you had all set) Or in etc/sysconfig. I'd like to see something like a network script in debian... since I am new to this flavor i've no idea where things are (i installed debian because i wanted to control my box.. rh does too much automatic stuff... which is dangerous). I've been searching man pages but wasn't able to find it... Any help would be appreciated.!!! Thanks in advance! Martin Marconcini

Not quite true... zombies don't ever die: they're already dead. While the description of zombie processes is accurate, I think another likely situation is that the process is in uninterruptible sleep, i.e. the 'D' state. This happens when a process is blocked in a system call - it will be 'D' until the kernel function returns. Kernel bugs, hardware problems, and dead NFS mounts can cause these kernel functions to take a long time or forever. In such a case, you really are stuck; unless the resource the process is waiting for frees up, it's going to hang around until a reboot. One thing about zombie process: Don't worry about trying to make them go away. They don't consume any CPU time, or any other resources other than the slot in the process table and the less than 1K of memory required to hold their state information. They are not worth worrying about.

The Linux kernel needs to keep track of the process so it can return the processes status, in case the parent does call waitpid(...). If you see a zombie persist, then the parent process is probably slow or buggy, as it has not yet done the right thing. Ok. Lets go again. - Where are the Debian network configuration files? - If you did answer NO when asked to config network while installing what happens to those files? Do they exist? or they are only created when YES is the answer? - If they don't exist, what and where must I create them for the OS to start networking and routing every time I boot? - I DO have my NIC working. but I DONT know how to change it's settings - Every time i boot, I have to do and ifconfig eth0 10.0.0.66 netmask 255.255.0.0 up , how can i avoid this? - I dont' have internet access, since the box has no network properly configured. EVEN When the nic works .. (but thanks to my knowledge of ifconfig... not because it booted like that) THis is better? Now.. - WHere do i set up the default gateway and the dns's ?? Re: How to install app from source code?
I can start gnome-session, then mount CDROM #4 from 6 disk set, and then find the .gz and .dsc files. But that's as far as I can get. Which debian install untility will work with these packages? I could try to do it from command line if that would help. If I click on a .tar.gz file the Olde M$h*t way in the Gnome File Manager, the source code will display as text, but no install program gets initiated. You are trying to use debianized source files from a debian cd right? You need dpkg-dev installed (apt-get install dpkg-dev should do it) Then point dpkg at the source files like this dpkg-source -x mypackage.dsc (the .dsc file is the key here) then within the resulting directory do dpkg-buildpackage and you will end up with a nice .deb which you can install with dpkg -i myprogram.deb It's a doddle really. ethernet card installation
Hi, I am new to Linux, and have recently installed Debian. In my attempts to get connected to my school's ethernet, I have found that there is no /dev/eth*'s on my system. I have one network card, a Netgear FA310TX. I found this card in a hardware list with the word Tulip in parentheses next to it, so following the Ethernet HOWTO's instructions on how to use ethernet drivers as modules I tried to install the card by adding an alias to my aliases file in /etc/modutils. The line I added was alias eth0 tulip. This didn't seem to have any effect. There was no /dev/eth*'s after I rebooted. If someone could tell me what I need to do to get Debian to recognize my card, and then how to set up DHCP, I would be extremely grateful. -JB __ Do You Yahoo!? Yahoo! Aliasing eth0 is not necessary unless you have two or more NICs: it'll just go ahead and assume you mean to make the NIC eth0. Bad news though: the tulip driver in the 2.2.X kernels is flaky: it's anybody's guess if your kernel/card combo will work. If it works, it should work consistently though. Re: sound in gnome-sawfish
The Gnome environment uses EsounD, the sound daemon originally written for the Enlightenment window manager. The actual name of the daemon is esd. esd will work great with a Sound Blaster Live! card. When you said enable sound server startup you were saying yes to esd, but esd did not work. I had this problem too. It was due to file permissions. I think you have the same problem. esd wants to talk to the device file /dev/dsp, which is owned by a group called audio. One way to fix the problem would be to add read/write permission for anyone on the file /dev/dsp, but that is not the best way to fix it. The best way is to add your user name to the audio group in the /etc/group file. (Use the command man group for details on the format of /etc/group.) Once you are a member of the audio group, audio should work for you. Good luck.
Re: Woody mouse and net are dead
It was the kernel. I'm running 2.4.1 now and that fixed it. After I got the system into a known working state (by re-installing from the unofficial Woody CDs) I built a new kernel. I figured out that I have a problem with building 2.2.18pre21 now; I used to be able to build it but no longer can. I built 2.4.1 instead, and net started working perfectly. The version of tulip.c in the 2.4.1 kernel sources is new enough to properly talk to my Linksys LNE100TX. The USB howto file, version 0.8, contains advice that did NOT work for me! I found a different howto file, and the advice in that file did help me. The file that helped me was here: http://linuxkb.cheek.com/pages/usb-howto/book1.html The command that made a working mouse device for me was: mknod /dev/input/mice c 13 63 The 0.8 howto has a different command (mknod /dev/usbmouse0 c 180 16) and that did NOT work for me. I believe the numbers 13 63 are correct for my USB mouse; 180 16 didn't do anything for me. By the way, I am loving 2.4.1; it built with no problems, my net card worked without patching, and my system actually seems faster. I didn't expect the system to really feel faster, but it does. Specifically, Gnome starts up faster than before; that's where I really notice it.

A hint for NFS: mount your NFS filesystems with the '-o intr' mount option. Faxgetty, Mgetty and data calls are driving me potty!
I've spent hours and hours trying to set up Hylafax/Faxgetty to auto detect fax/data calls and respond appropriately. I have had partial success in that I can now get it to distinguish between fax and data calls and accept the fax or start a getty for a data call. Part of my original problem was that the default config.ttyS1 GettyArgs included -h as the first option which caused Mgetty to start and then immediately stop after printing a 'Usage' line in the log. My current config.ttyS1 gettyargs is: GettyArgs: -D %l dx_%s I have also tried -r -s %s %l together with many other combinations. If I dial in from another machine the call is answered as a data call and the getty started but on the machine that I dialled in from I see a line of about two dozen characters, most of which appear to be '?', then the cursor returns to the beginning of the line, overwrites part of the existing line before dropping down one line, printing a few more characters then dropping down another line and displays 'NO CARRIER'. I never get to see a login prompt and these tests are costing me a fortune in telephone calls! The getty on the Hylafax machine is left running and has to be killed. There's no /etc/network infrastructure in slink, so you have to configure your network the old way. Substitutute the values below with your actual values.
