Opening a port on Ipmasq
Hi Everyone! I have been a very happy user of the Ipmasq program for many years. It has allowed me to very easily setup a home network that doesn't require a router. However, I recently bought a webcam which I use on a networked computer running Debian testing. The server runs Sarge at this point. I am using the aMSN program and when I start it up and try to connect my webcam it says that I am behind a firewall. It says I need some ports opened so I can let other users see my cam. The aMSN documentation says I need to setup up the following "port forwarding:" Application:aMSN Start: 6890 End:6900 Protocol: Both (TCP & UDP) IP: xxx.xxx.x.xxx Enabled:X YES Do you have any suggestions on how I can configure it to allow these ports so my webcam will work properly? Any suggestions would be helpful. Thank you John -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]

What commands did you expect to use with these? How does a web browser do this? Also, there is 'kmldonkey' in Debian, so 'apt-get install kmldonkey' will install a client to use the mldonkey network. And as far as I know, most 'linksys' network products do use a built-in webserver and can be accessed by typing http://192.168.1.1 or some similar address provided by the instructions. You can use "apt-cache search linux-image smp" without the quotes and it should show you the available smp kernels to install I'm sure there is a way to search this using aptitude but I never have used it. Once you find a suitable one then "aptitude install linux-image--smp" would install it from the command line using aptitude then of course reboot and choose the newly installed kernel from the list presented by Grub/LILO depending on which you are using. Setup of thpot SSH -- is this how its supposed to work?
Hi. I'm using Sarge 2.6.8-3 on PPC and have been trying to get a SSH server set up. I've gone through all the obligatory security measures like changing port numbers, and now I'm trying to get tinyhoneypot installed and working as a secondary measure. But after a few days, I can't get tinyhoneypot to display an interface after test connecting to it via "ssh -p 22 127.0.0.1" I've read all the man files and checked on websites that deal with installing thpot. Through some trial and error, I've gotten thpot to where it will report the date and time of a connection in its log directory, which is set to chown thpot:nogroup and chmod 700, that last as per the configuration file specifics -- since I couldn't find a group with the name "nobody" and running as user "thpot" seems to be a better idea. Since I chose to make it work with plain inetd instead of xinetd, the entry in my inetd.conf file is as follows, to be commented out later: #ssh stream tcp nowait thpot /usr/sbin/thpot thpot ssh Is there any error in there that is preventing the thpot interface from showing up? Should it not be against list etiquette to do so, I'll offer my thanks in advance. This is confusing me. R. pgp7yluubgtlK.pgp Description: PGP signature

Email programs that work.
I have been trying different email programs. None of them seem to let me reply to a particular message in the digest. Almost all of the ones I tried so far, when you hit the reply button, copies the *entire* digest into the compose window instead of only the message you wish to reply to. Some of them have nicer features to deal with the messages but those programs don't seem to work properly on my box. Let me summarize: Thunderbird - Copies entire message at reply. Works fine on my box. Balsa - Copies entire message at reply. I have tried the suggested "Ctrl L" thing with no luck. Otherwise it works fine on my box. Has cool "next part" and "previous part" buttons that cycle through the messages one at a time. Kmail - Configured it, and got test messages in and out then it started to complain the POP3 was broken. Never got any messages from the list. Could not get it going again. Evolution - Configured it, and got test messages in and out then it would quit the send/receive thing immediately and "time out". Deleted the account settings, put them in again and it did the same thing. Any combination of Reply buttons also copied the entire digest into the compose window. But there was a little "down arrow" icon button on the message headers that when clicked would copy just that message. Too bad it keeps crashing! This message was composed in Thunderbird. Those of you list-junkies I am sure I am missing some little stupid step, or some configuration. Or I would be willing to try other email packages. I really like this list and I don't want to break the threads! Thanks! DJ... -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]

But, this would result in wierd hit > stats (coming from the proxy IP rather than the client IP - i think). are the two IP addresses in the same network segments or at the same physical real-world location? if so, then just make sure both IP addresses are routed to your web server. if not, then proxying will be needed. you could do it with DNAT, but only if the two different IP networks are routed to the same actual location (i.e. at the same ISP or your own network blocks) - in which case, you're better off either routing both IPs to the same host or (as below) putting a second NIC in the web server. much simpler and less hassle than DNAT. (as for stats, i vaguely recall seeing an apache module which looked at the "Via:" headers added by proxies to the request and logged that rather than the actual TCP source address. can't remember what it's called. it's not something that's very important, though, esp. if it's only going to be for a week or so). alternatively, put a second network card in the web server and connect it to both networks (if physically possible). craig -- craig sanders <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> (part time cyborg) -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Hi! "... Note that since the command line editors try to figure out how long the prompt is (so they know how far it is to edge of the screen), escape codes in the prompt tend to mess things up. ..." Okay, I get it, I'm using escape codes, so I need the following hack. "... You can tell the shell not to count certain sequences (such as escape codes) by prefixing your prompt with a non-printing character (such as control-A) followed by a carriage return and then delimiting the escape codes with this non-printing character." I've put my escape character to a variable to make things cleaner: ESC="^" So if I have a simple prompt like this: PS1='$ESC[01;32m$USER> ' now if I prefix my prompt with a non-printing char (with control-A like suggested) then I get an error when starting the shell: /bin/pdksh: /home/leva/.profile[11]: no closing quote I see that I must put a carriage return after that, but I don't know how. I feel like I'm going in circles to track this > problem. Several factors are at work, of course. Since your 'broken' machine has a 2.6 kernel, the kernel isn't the problem, and it seems safe to assume you're not using some wonderfully out-of-date libc6 package on there either, so we can be reasonably sure some ld-linux.so configuration item somewhere is causing the difficulty. Using LD_ASSUME_KERNEL in particular is a good way to force the dynamic linker not to use the lib/tls directories, and other LD_* options could have similar effects, and the /etc/ld.so.conf could affect ldconfig's idea of what should be used, so you should check those. But the one that got me is /etc/ld.so.nohwcap. If that file exists, the dynamic linker will not try to load libraries from the lib/tls dirs. In my case, that file was created when I downgraded libc6 from an etch (or maybe backports.org) version to the current sarge version. I believe it was created erroneously, since that libc6 version should be able to handle hwcap foo fine and certainly does NPTL fine with that file gone, but I haven't the time to track down where it came from and file a proper bug report. So, short answer, David, I bet you need to rm /etc/ld.so.nohwcap. > > David -- paul -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I have had similar problems with an Asus A7M266-D motherboard with multiple kernel versions (2.2 through 2.6, I think). From what I've been able to gather, my motherboard's IDE controller (AMD 768?) is buggy, and the Linux kernel doesn't do whatever the Windows kernel does to work around the problem. (I can't run the disks attached to the onboard IDE controller at full sped (i.e., with DMA on) or I get extreme filesystem corruption in Linux. Simply add users who need permission to manage the interface to the netdev group and run. I don't use WPA (WEP only), but the package depends on wpasupplicant, so WPA should be supported. Upcoming Release of Debian GNU/Linux 4.0 - a beginner's query/request
By adhering to the install instructions that were on Disk 1 (of a 14-disk CD set) of Debian 3.1, I have ended up with a fully functioning OS. These instructions assume a "clean install" (which was the case). This posting is an advance-request to include "update from Debian 3.1" instructions in the proposed release of Debian 4.0. If existing documentation applies, a relevant URL would suffice. My concern is the upgrade of the kernel. I presume - perhaps incorrectly - that this will need a separate routine. Also check the output of syslog. The system freezes a few seconds after starting the copying and after reboot there is no specific entry in syslog. Maybe you could also try cp -rv to see if any files get copied. Are your filenames in accordance to UDF's specifications? I'm not sure about UDF, but for CDs not any filename that is allowed for ext2 is also allowed on the CD. Does this have anything to do with you switching on and off the DVD drive? Unlike hard disks, cd/dvd writers have a large buffer. My dvd-ram continues to 'copy' for minutes after the console is finished with it, ie. it writes the data to buffer and then writes the buffer to disk. If I switch off the device during that, it hasn't finished writing and then (of course) damages the UDF filesystem as well. I would try to reproduce the behaviour with a brand new DVD-Ram disk and without tempering with the on/off button. The switching off/on of the writer was only to ensure that the buffer is empty prior to applying diff and really comparing the files on DVD and not the buffer to the original files. Of course I waited until the writing light was off. The cp -rv showed up a file name with an unprintable character (the file originated from DOS, long time ago). Thanks. I renamed the file and now the system doesn't freeze, but the writer doesn't stop to write (more than 15 min for 293 MB ;-(. No hint from syslog, the only method to stop the writer is to switch it off and after a new switch on no data have been written to the DVD. It seems that UDF is rather unstable, at least in the AMD64 branch. I can only set the ENV parameter in the .profile, because it is the first and only file which is used by pdksh when it starts. But setting the ENV parameter in the .profile file doesn't make any sense if I have a file (the .profile) which have already been parsed by pdksh. I can put all my variables and aliases etc... in to my .profile, and no need for another startup file. But, I can see the ENV variable's meaning in another context, please read along. When I start pdksh in a non-login shell, the .profile gets parsed, and the PATH and every other env.var. gets set. Only the aliases gets ignored, but why? Pdksh parses the alias commands too, why don't they appear in a non-login shell, and why do they appear in a login shell? The .profile file is the same... If I add the ENV="~/.kshrc" line to my .profile and my ~/.kshrc contains my aliases, then I still can not see my aliases... And that is what I've expected, beacuse only by sourcing another file from an already parsed file doesn't make it working... If I start konsole with 'ENV="~/.kshrc" konsole' then my aliases are working. So this is solution no.1. > If you setup .profile the way I suggested (eg, by setting ENV to > be .kshrc), konsole works properly. Unfortunatelly not. The solution which is working is the konsole starting method that you've suggested. The man says that "if the ENV parameter is set when the shell starts" :) This is funny because I can set the ENV parameter in a shell, and I can not set it before running the shell :) Something must be running already (eg. KDE) to be able to set up the variable. I can put a file which contains 'ENV="~/.kshrc"' to my ~/.kde/env/ and that gets sourced by kde startup, so the ENV parameter will be set when I start konsole. Wait a minute... that is what I'm gonna do! :) Daniel -- LeVA

RFC: Well supported scanners under Linux?
Dear people, I have some photos that I would like to preserve in a digital form and I thought of using a scanner for this. Unfortunately, I my knowlegdge about scanners is zero and I have already visited the sane project page, but could not decide what would be a good purchase. So, in light of this, I would like to ask you some recommendations based on your experiences for scanners that are fully functional under Linux, from open-source friendly companies. I am open to recommendations for other devices, like the multifunctional devices, but I'm not sure if they are adequate and would give me the best "bang for the buck". faxing
Sorry if this is OT, but faxing has given me fits for years. I want to receive a fax, via modem on my Debian PC, edit it in GIMP and fax it back. Here's what I think works: - use mgetty to receive fax - open fax in GIMP (GIMP can read but not write .g3 files) - scale image to double vertical dimension for normal (204x98 dpi) faxes - edit image and save in, say, GIMP's xcf format - scale image to halve vertical dimension - using ImageMagick "convert" to .g3 format (ImageMagick can read but not write GIMP's xcf format - use mgetty's "sendfax" to send fax Is there a better way? Whenever I google for help I never seem to be able to find anything but the ImageMagick manual pages which have not helped me (for years :( ). Thanks. Sabrent SBT-WC3L spca5xx driver
Hi everyone, Was wondering if any of you can help me out... Tired of Xubuntu Dapper on my PC decided to do a fresh install using the 22 July daily image of Debian Testing for AMD64. Everything has been working well, much better than the former OS :-) Way to go Debian as usual! My only problem is I bought a new webcam recently, an inexpensive Sabrent SBT-WC3L http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16830194001 I saw that it had support in Linux and didn't want to spend a lot. It worked OK in Xubuntu Dapper... Getting it to work in Debian has been a little more of a challenge. I discovered the device uses a spca5xx driver, so I went into aptitude and installed the kernel module for amd64 2.16.2 generic... tried to install driver in modconf and it didn't work. So I decided to go with the amd64 k8 kernel and the spca5xx module for amd64 k8... rebooted, run modconf and received this message: --- Installing module spca5xx. If the device isn't there, or isn't configured correctly, this could cause your system to pause for up to a minute. FATAL: Error inserting spca5xx (/lib/modules/2.6.16-2-amd64-k8/kernel/drivers/usb/media/spca5xx.ko): Invalid module format Installation failed. Architecture-specific modutils configuration for x86_64 not found, using defaults Please press ENTER when you are ready to continue. Is there anyway anyone can help me with getting this module to work? I really don't want to recompile my kernel, I have not had good luck with that in recent years and found that usually I am OK with the stock kernels. If anyone has any advice on this subject I would be very greatful. Thank you, John Anderson -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? It is furthermore treated as one character when you move the > cursor across it. If I may be pedantic... First of all you mean vim. The original vi does not support syntax coloring, and there are other vi clones which may behave differently than you describe (like elvis, etc.). Secondly, the key to use is dependent on your operating system and terminal settings. On Windows, the key seems to be CTRL-Q. On virtually any Unix platform, the default is CTRL-V but is configurable by the user, using stty or similar terminal control programs. The setting is controlled by your terminal, not by vim per se. You can see what it is currently set to using stty -a: $ stty -a speed 38400 baud; rows 24; columns 80; line = 0; intr = ^C; quit = ^\; erase = ^?; kill = ^U; eof = ^D; eol = ; eol2 = ; start = ^Q; stop = ^S; susp = ^Z; rprnt = ^R; werase = ^W; lnext = ^V; flush = ^O; min = 1; time = 0; -parenb -parodd cs8 -hupcl -cstopb cread -clocal -crtscts -ignbrk -brkint -ignpar -parmrk -inpck -istrip -inlcr -igncr icrnl ixon -ixoff -iuclc -ixany -imaxbel opost -olcuc -ocrnl onlcr -onocr -onlret -ofill -ofdel nl0 cr0 tab0 bs0 vt0 ff0 isig icanon iexten echo echoe echok -echonl -noflsh -xcase -tostop -echoprt echoctl echoke Notice on the 4th line of output at the beginning, the entry lnext = ^V This is the key which is correct on your terminal. The "lnext" keyword is short for "literal next character" and is what you would use to change the key using stty. For example: stty lnext ^U ...changes the character to CTRL-U, though this isn't recommended as ^U normally corresponds to the kill character (not the same as the kill command) by default. These are the normal defaults for xterm and its cousins, which are based on the DEC vt100 family of terminals, as is the Linux console. Note from the output above that ^Q is assigned to "start" which is the XON character for terminal flow control, so it will not work as advertised above on this terminal. -- Derek D. From vim-doc usr_24.html: *24.8* Entering special characters The CTRL-V command is used to insert the next character literally. In other words, any special meaning the character has, it will be ignored. For example: CTRL-V Inserts an escape character. Thus you don't leave Insert mode. (Don't type the space after CTRL-V, it's only to make this easier to read). Note: On MS-Windows CTRL-V is used to paste text. Use CTRL-Q instead of CTRL-V. On Unix, on the other hand, CTRL-Q does not work on some terminals, because it has a special meaning. The netinst image contains only software that you would download anyway during the install, and it also contains a copy of ppp. You'll be able to install the base system without going online, then after it reboots into debian, you can install ppp from the CD, configure it, and pull down whatever else you need over the modem. Alternatively, if you want a simpler desktop install, the full CD is a good choice, since it contains little aside from what you'll need for a desktop install. Again you can install ppp after the install to pull down any additional software you need. Thanks Joey, let me try the netinst image. The reason I did not do that is the wiki. It says: ... Install problems
People, I'm attempting to install Debian 3.1r2 on a Dell - Optiplex GX400, and I'm not progressing very fast. I should say that I already have CentOS 4.3 up and running on this machine, which leads me to believe that the BIOS supports ISOLinux already. To make a long story short, the system doesn't seem to recognize the boot material, either as the first CDROM of the group of 14, or the boot floppy containing sbm.bin. The original 14 CDROM's were created using another CentOS 4.3 system. A second copy of the first CDROM was generated using CentOS on the target system. Neither copy worked. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Harold Skank -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Mouse devices gone after suspend-to-ram
Hi, After upgrading to a 2.6.16 etch kernel on a whitebox Centrino, S3 suspend (to ram) is almost working using the hibernate script. On resume, however I find that the devices for my touchpad have not been created, so it doesn't function. Xorg.0.log reports: (EE) xf86OpenSerial: No Device specified. (EE) PreInit failed for input device "Synaptics Touchpad" (**) |-->Input Device "Synaptics Touchpad" (II) Synaptics touchpad driver version 0.14.5 (1405) Synaptics Touchpad no synaptics event device found (checked 12 nodes) Synaptics driver unable to open device (EE) PreInit failed for input device "Synaptics Touchpad" A normal ls -R /dev/input: by-path event0 event1 event3 #note: sometimes this is event2 mice mouse0 /dev/input/by-path: platform-i8042-serio-3-event-mouse platform-i8042-serio-3-mouse platform-i8042-serio-4-event-kbd platform-pcspkr-event-spkr But after resume: /dev/input: by-path event0 event1 mice /dev/input/by-path: platform-i8042-serio-4-event-kbd platform-pcspkr-event-spkr So far I have tried reloading the psmouse module (which succeeds but does not create the required devices), restarting udev and restarting X (same result). Reloading evdev is not allowed ("in use"), and I have mousedev compiled in. Rebooting fixes the problem, but I am hoping there is a less drastic way! Would it be possible, for example to write a udev rule to ensure that udev will create /dev/input/mouse0, or whatever is required, on resume, ensuring that the device is actually used by the touchpad? I've been looking at /etc/udevz20_persistent-input-rules, but I can't see why it wouldn't be working. I've pasted it below for udev experts. Also, why do devices disappear during suspend-to-ram? Could this be a module ordering issue? Why can't you tickle yourself? etc., etc... Any help appreciated, John P.S Worked around a "fan stuck on after resume" bug: echo 0 > proc/acpi/fan/FAN/state echo 0 > proc/acpi/fan/FAN/state echo 3 > proc/acpi/fan/FAN/state echo 3 > proc/acpi/fan/FAN/state The repeats seem to be necessary. It needs to be a login shell, or have ENV set. From the man page: If the basename of the name the shell is called with (i.e., argv[0]) starts with - or if the -l option is used, the shell is assumed to be a login shell and the shell reads and executes the contents of /etc/pro‐ file and $HOME/.profile if they exist and are readable. If the ENV parameter is set when the shell starts (or, in the case of login shells, after any profiles are processed), its value is subjected to parameter, command, arithmetic and tilde substitution and the resulting file (if any) is read and executed. If ENV parameter is not set (and not null) and pdksh was compiled with the DEFAULT_ENV macro defined, the file named in that macro is included (after the above men‐ tioned substitutions have been performed). So either set konsole up to launch ksh as a login shell, or set ENV somewhere. You can test this with: $ ENV="~/.profile" konsole Or launch konsole, and do: $ ksh -l If you setup .profile the way I suggested (eg, by setting ENV to be .kshrc), konsole works properly. For some reason, gnome-terminal does not do this correctly, but it has a method of launching the shell as a login session, which works just as well. Re: "Unpacking replacement..." hangs in apt-get.
I followed your advice and it was one of those scripts that was in an uninterrupted loop (or something like that). However, when I ran it by hand, ie from command line it didn't hang but it didn't seem to do anything either. Later I went into dselect and started removing 'broken packages'. These were numerous. In fact, by the time I was through the networking stopped working. So I reinstalled the system from the ground up and it works fine. Unfortunately, I can no longer study the bogus behavior. On the other hand, my hardware (x86_64) is now in official unstable release (it used to be stable only). Maybe there is some problem with the stable release? I use gnome-terminal, which always sets TERM to 'xterm'. This is fine for GNU/Linux boxes, but ssh'ing into OpenBSD requires that TERM be set to 'xterm-color'. 'wsvt25' should be used on OpenBSD for console logins. May also be needed on FreeBSD, but haven't checked. So, I did this in in ~/.kshrc: # hack because gnome-terminal always does 'xterm' and I need 'xterm-xfree86' if [ "$TERM" == "xterm" ] then export TERM=xterm-xfree86 fi Again, this is not needed for GNU/Linux boxes, both 'xterm' and 'linux' (for console logins) work fine without the above. How do i get rid of this? Downgrading is not supported by debian. One way to circumvent this is to purge/remove the package/ a couple of packages and reinstalling them. If this doesn't work due to dependencies, you're gonna have some problems. If it's a lot that has to be fixed and you can't figure it out, one clean way would be to save your package selection status and to do a fresh install... It is always executed so I don't see any reason why I should create a .kshrc. BTW, I need you to clarify something for me please. My setup looks like this: ~/.profile: --###-- PS1='whatever...' export PS1 alias df='df -h' --###-- When I'm using a login shell, everything is working. But when I'm using a non-login shell (in my case Konsole from KDE), then everything gets still sourced from my ~/.profile (so my PS1 is 'whatever...') *BUT* the aliases are not working. When I type `alias' to my non-login shell then it just prints out the builtin defaults. I think that the feature I need is "alias exporting", which could be done with "alias -x df='df -h'", but pdksh doesn't support it yet(according to the authors homepage, this is still an existing bug). Quote from http://www.cs.mun.ca/~michael/pdksh/NOTES : "General features of at&t ksh88 that are not (yet) in pdksh: - exported aliases and functions (not in ksh93)." Can you confirm this or there is a misunderstanding in my head about this behaviour, and there is a way to make my aliases work in a non-login shell. NOTE that if I type in the command `alias df='df -h'` in a non-login shell then I can use the alias, but I don't want to type in every alias everytime :) > > and then add whatever to ~/.kshrc. Here's the story, so far - moved Linux (on sda3) to a safe place while booted on another partition (sda6) - formatted sda3 as reiserfs - amended both fstabs (sda3 and sda6) - mounted the newly formatted sda3 partition - moved the data back onto sda3 - rebooted. Grub currently loads from /boot on sda3, or rather it doesn't now. I'm getting an error 17 : Cannot mount selected partition. I'm not overly surprised, but I'm not sure what to do next. I can mount the partition from a live CD without a problem, and I obviously mounted it from my sda6 partition. Suggestions welcomed. It would seem that grub only embeded support for ext2, which is what it should do because the partition was ext (it uses ext2 support for both ext3 and ext2). What you have to do is embed the reiserfs support. Try mounting the all the partitions as normal from a livecd, then chrooting into it and running update-grub. That should fix the problem. Just got back to this. Nope, update-grub only "updated" menu.lst, no changes to the initrd. sudo dpkg-reconfigure linux-image- should rebuild your initrd. (For older kernels it is "kernel-image" instead of "linux-image".) If that does not work in the chroot environment then you can call mkinitrd or mkinitrd.yaird directly. I looked up GNU GRUB Manual 0.97(http://www.gnu.org/software/grub/manual/html_node/index.html), seems like u problem is this. 17 : Cannot mount selected partition This error is returned if the partition requested exists, but the filesystem type cannot be recognized by GRUB. If it's true, that's means u grub stage1 image in sda's mbr can't load stage2. So it's useless which update initrd.img. U can bootup from LiveCD because ur LiveCD use stage2_eltorito or syslinux(that's more commonly) to find vmlinuz & initrd.img. So maybe that's what u wanna. — Command: install [--force-lba] [--stage2=os_stage2_file] stage1_file [d] dest_dev stage2_file [addr] [p] [config_file] [real_config_file] In short, it will perform a full install presuming the Stage 2 or Stage 1.510 is in its final install location. In slightly more detail, it will load stage1_file, validate that it is a GRUB Stage 1 of the right version number, install in it a blocklist for loading stage2_file as a Stage 2. If the option d is present, the Stage 1 will always look for the actual disk stage2_file was installed on, rather than using the booting drive. The Stage 2 will be loaded at address addr, which must be `0x8000' for a true Stage 2, and `0x2000' for a Stage 1.5. If addr is not present, GRUB will determine the address automatically. It then writes the completed Stage 1 to the first block of the device dest_dev. If the options p or config_file are present, then it reads the first block of stage2, modifies it with the values of the partition stage2_file was found on (for p) or places the string config_file into the area telling the stage2 where to look for a configuration file at boot time. Likewise, if real_config_file is present and stage2_file is a Stage 1.5, then the Stage 2 config_file is patched with the configuration file name real_config_file. This command preserves the DOS BPB (and for hard disks, the partition table) of the sector the Stage 1 is to be installed into. Caution3: You must specify the option --stage2 in the grub shell, if you cannot unmount the filesystem where your stage2 file resides. The argument should be the file name in your operating system. e2fs_stage1_5 fat_stage1_5 ffs_stage1_5 jfs_stage1_5 minix_stage1_5 reiserfs_stage1_5 vstafs_stage1_5 xfs_stage1_5 These are called Stage 1.5, because they serve as a bridge between stage1 and stage2, that is to say, Stage 1.5 is loaded by Stage 1 and Stage 1.5 loads Stage 2. The difference between stage1 and *_stage1_5 is that the former doesn't understand any filesystem while the latter understands one filesystem (e.g. e2fs_stage1_5 understands ext2fs). So you can move the Stage 2 image to another location safely, even after GRUB has been installed. While Stage 2 cannot generally be embedded in a fixed area as the size is so large, Stage 1.5 can be installed into the area right after an MBR, or the boot loader area of a ReiserFS or a FFS. In ur problem, maybe u can try this in grub shell. setup --stage2=/boot/grub/reiserfs_stage1_5 (hd0) install /boot/grub/stage1 (hd0) /boot/grub/reiserfs_stage1_5 Remember return 2 me if that's really work, because I'm not sure in this.
