nautilus fora de gnome no mostra particions

2008-06-29 Thread rpb
desmuntar).
a fluxbox, tornen a desaparèixer.

« 25/06/2008 : transcode has been removed from testing because
liblzo1 is now deprecated and thus removed. »

donner quelques tuyaux!!!

situés dans /etc/network/if-*.

A bientôt.

connexion wifi

2008-06-29 Thread Klaus Becker
Salut,

/etc/network/interfaces :
 # Free Wifi DHCP
auto eth1
iface eth1 inet dhcp
wireless-mode managed
wireless-essid freebox
wireless-key ...

# iwconfig
eth1 IEEE 802.11g ESSID:freebox

Rx invalid nwid:0 Rx invalid crypt:0 Rx invalid frag:0
  Tx excessive retries:0 Invalid misc:115 Missed beacon:0

simple)

#ifconfig -a
eth1 Lien encap:Ethernet HWaddr
  adr inet6: . Scope:Lien

  RX bytes:9522 (9.2 KiB) TX bytes:9191 (8.9 KiB)

soporte a nuevo hardware.

 - Abrir um terminal (Ctrl+Alt+F1);
 - Executar: /etc/init.d/gdm stop;

Yes, this is a known bug. It also affects support of ICQ, AIM, Yahoo,
Gadu-Gadu, MySpaceIM, QQ, and all other centrally-organized,
proprietary, private IM systems. Most of them prohibit you from using
any client other than their own in the first place, and enforce this by
changing the protocol on a regular basis.

The workaround? Don't use proprietary IM protocols: Cut them off
 instead. Use XMPP instead.

CPU Frequencies Don't scale independently

2008-06-29 Thread Hakan BAYINDIR
Hi,

I'm running debian testing on a Intel Core2Quad Q6600 CPU with 4
gigabytes of RAM for 7 months. Until 2.6.22, the kernel was scaling each
of my cores independently of each other but starting with 2.6.22, every
core is running in the same frequency. While this doesn't pose any
stability or performance issues, causes higher temprature and noise when
I run a single threaded computing intensive job.

I tracked the cause a bit. I was able to dig upto
/sys/devices/system/cpu/cpuX/cpufreq/affected_cpus. This file says
which CPUs should scale together. Since file is read only even to root I
think it's an unconfigurable option. I also found that cpu frequencies
are adjusted by cpufreq_acpi module and I cannot find any configuration
related to it files in my system (with my current knowledge).

The weird thing is I'm running an exact clone of this system in my
office with a core2duo system which scales its cores independently. I
cloned my home system to the office when I was running an Athlon64,
approximately 1.5 years ago.

If anybody can say what is wrong, is it the expected behavior, where
should I look further, or whom I can talk to?

BTW, I'm running 2.6.24-1-686-bigmem kernel prepackaged from debian testing.

Thanks in advance,

--Hakan.

   research.

The monitor in question is an Acer 22 lcd, if anyone out there has
   any experience with these.

Can you post your xorg.conf and the file /var/log/Xorg.0.log?

As requested I have attached my xorg.conf and Xorg.0.log files. I'm
attaching the conf and log files which occurred using the nv driver,
although I get the same results (near as I can tell) when using the vga
 driver.
You can also see that I've disabled glx output and restricted screen
resolution to 1024x768 or lower (non-widescreen resolutions) in the hope
that this might help, but no luck so far.

In your Xorg.0.log:

(--) PCI:*(1:0:0) nVidia Corporation unknown chipset (0x0402) rev 161, Mem @
0xfa00/24, 0xd000/28, 0xf800/25, I/O @ 0xdf00/7
(EE) end of block range 0x1fff begin 0xe000
(EE) No devices detected.

It seems that the nv driver in Etch does not know your chipset (nvidia
x0402 seems to be a GeForce 8600 GT). That is unfortunately a relatively
common issue with newer hardware and Debian stable.

You may have to go to Lenny or Sid if you want to use the free driver;
as far as I can tell there is no backport of the newer xorg available on
www.backports.org. (Actually I don't know for sure if your chipset is
supported by the newer nv driver; the manpage on Sid claims support for
GeForce 8XXX.)

You could also try if you can install the newest nvidia driver on Etch
with nvidia's own installer script:

http://www.nvidia.com/object/linux_display_amd64_173.14.09.html

It might help if you get a newer kernel from www.backports.org first.
Also make sure that you purge (not just remove) the Debian nvidia
packages before you try this.

Haven't gotten the box to recognize the monitor yet, although I did manage
to get the mouse configured correctly thanks to mdetect. Is it unusual to
have to require root privileges to open /dev/psaux ? I couldn't cat that
device file on my usual login, and mdetect could not discover it without
 being run as root.

I think this is normal. /dev/psaux is depreciated nowadays in favor of
/dev/input/mice, but it should still work as long as your kernel has
CONFIG_INPUT_MOUSEDEV_PSAUX.

still no framebuffers in 2.6.25 (i386 sid)

2008-06-29 Thread Hugo Vanwoerkom

Hi,

I posted the fact that vga=791 did not work with Debian's 2.6.25 kernel
on May 12th:

http://lists.debian.org/debian-user/2008/05/msg01095.html

Yesterday I tried installing linux-image-2.6.25-2-686 (2.6.25-6) and the
problem persists. There is a bug report:

http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=481063

This is for the i386 architecture with Sid. On May 12th I tried 2.6.25-3.

That leaves you with the option to recompile the kernel and install
uvesafd or install svgatextmode which does not need framebuffers.

Any comments?

If it is not possible to configure this in Gnome (I do not know anything
about that) then you can try to enforce this policy at the HAL level.
The file /etc/hal/fdi/policy/preferences.fdi has an example for using
the storage.automount_enabled_hint policy, but it is commented out by
default. If gnome-volume-manager honors this policy (as is claimed in
the comments in preferences.fdi) then something like this should work to
turn off automounting for a give device (here /dev/scd0):

device
  match key=block.device string=/dev/scd0
  merge key=storage.automount_enabled_hint type=boolfalse/merge
  /match
/device

After restarting HAL you should see that the policy has been changed:

$ lshal -u $(hal-find-by-property --key block.device --string '/dev/scd0') |
grep automount
  storage.automount_enabled_hint = false  (bool)

Update Modified BIOS???

2008-06-29 Thread Thomas H. George
This morning at power up I got a gray screen with a flashing cursor
instead of the usual Lilo choice of boot options. At first I thought a
hard drive had died but after booting up from a Grml cd I found both ide
hard drives accessible and ok. I re-ran lilo but this did not correct
the problem. Thinking that something had damaged the mbr on the first
ide hard drive I ran lilo again to use the the mbr on the second ide
hard drive. When I went into BIOS to change the boot sequence I found a
SATA hard drive had been moved to the top of the boot sequence! When
this was corrected I could boot from the first ide drive.

Yesterday - 28 June 08 - I ran apt-get update followed by apt-get
dist-upgrade. Following this everything worked as usual and in the
evening I shut down the system with shutdown - h now. At no time did I
enter BIOS.

Could the upgrade have modified BIOS ? If so, should this be right?

There may be other problems as well. After correcting the boot sequence
and booting up my Wacom tablet no longer works. My version of xorg.conf
is unchanged. As yet I have not tracked down the source of this problem.

Has the memory hole in Xfce been fixed yet?

2008-06-29 Thread andy

Hi all

Several months ago, it became apparent from a discussion here (and info
elsewhere) that there was a significant memory leak in Xfce4. I think
that it had something to do with Gtk but couldn't swear to it.

Has anyone heard whether that hole has yet been plugged?

Cheers

Have you looked at kicad? Supposedly, it is less powerful than

My experience is that kicad is less intuitive, because it has a

Again .. some friendly communication with the developers should
help a lot. Making software intuitive is hard. It's mostly in
how it behaves when you do something wrong.

With gnucap, almost all of the bug reports ever received involve
some kind of user error. The bugs are real bugs, and the
reports are very much appreciated. That kind of bugs is very
hard to find without users who are willing to try it, report
the experience, and work with the developers to improve things.

What I need is a PCB-Autorouter which do the routing for
 me!!!

Someone is working on it. From what I see, he is making good
progress.

I want to tell the program the pinlayout of the used
Microchips, the position of the parts and let the Computer
work for me. This is HOW intuitive software should work,

Autoroute is not a simple task.

For a long time, all of the commercial PCB programs used the
same outsourced autorouter. This lasted until the maker was
acquired by Cadence, and became unfriendly to Cadence's
competitors.

Nvidia TwinView different resolution no Panning

2008-06-29 Thread Julian Knauer
Hi,

is there a way to setup TwinView with two different resolutions? Using
TwinView my second Screen has a dead area at the bottom and I don't want to
setup panning.
Currently I am using Xinerama and to have a huge desktop, but I noticed
problems with the composite module, which is loaded but Xfce is unable to make
use of it. DRI is also available.
I don't want to setup two different screens. Some application cannot handle
this correctly (like firefox, opening links from the other screen).

Hi David,

Correct on all counts. Yes, ath5k is built into 2.6.25 so it should
just work. And I've been building madwifi-source with m-a and using
it for years.

A recent change in either madwifi or the kernel has caused my wireless
connections to drop periodically which is what prompted me to
investigate ath5k, especially since new development has switched from
madwifi to ath5k.

Also note that I did associate with the AP, but just couldn't set up a
network connection as shown below.

Another reader suggested that my network parameters were missing a
broadcast address, but a default broadcast address is provided, and
adding an explicit address didn't change things.

However Pavel Roskin thought that it might be a WEP issue. Sure
enough, when I disabled WEP, my network came up! So it appears that
ath5k has WEP issues with my device.

I do know the T60 and T43 did have modems. My T43 has one, works with the

well enough for emergencies, and the modem does V92 and Class 2 Fax

PS All the searching I have done lead me to believe that they don't

They do exist. Google, as you said, isn't perfect.

V92 modems are the kind of stuff that makes more sense to exist in a USB or

Check the USB-related settings of your BIOS, especially anything about
assigning interrupts to USB and about legacy mode. (I doubt that udev is
to blame for this. As Bob and John have already pointed out in the other
thread, it looks like your BIOS battery had a problem. This can lead to
corrupted BIOS settings and a reset to factory defaults.)

If you don't make any progress by changing BIOS settings then the output
of the following commands might provide us with some clues:

lsmod | grep 'hci\|usb'

cat /proc/interrupts | grep usb

ls /sys/class/usb_*

If you've ever connected to a BBS, or the Intarweb via the PSTN,
then *YES*, you *do* trust the phone company to provide proper

Or you're chancing it because you don't have a choice. Qwest and

value (but I always understood that the free -/+ buffers/cache
value was more important). Does this give any clues?

OK, I've just spent 10 minutes searching for Linksys WRT56GL (a pair
of donkey ears for me, please)

I realize that googling returns 259 hits, but there's no wrt56gl on
Linksys's support website, and dd-wrt doesn't have it in their list of
  supported hardware.

Ron, is this just a typo?

 Yup. Sorry. It's the WRT54GL.

I've heard of this. I was kind of hoping to do all this with Debian, but it
sounds like the WRT54GL is a better bet, but only if it can actually
firewall the wired subnet from the wireless subnet. A little bit of
googling hasn't given me the answer to that either way. Does anyone know?

No it's not. There was a discussion on debian-devel, but the conclusion
was that lilo has to stay for a while because it has features that grub
does not.

Hello Joe Hickey,

At Sat, 28 Jun 2008 02:46:49 +0100 you wrote,
Will 'ifconfig' do the trick?

ifconfig will list all configured interfaces. An interface is
a software entity depending upon a device; a description
of an interface can tell me about the device it uses.
Conversely ifconfig can not report on an interface which
doesn't exist. An Ethernet device for which an interface
has not been configured, will not be mentioned by ifconfig.

Prior to udev or so, devices didn't change while a system
was running and the owner would have a fairly certain
understanding of Ethernet devices present. Now udev
keeps a list of devices and avoids using an ethn used
previously whether or not it remains connected. So, for
example, a system can have eth0, eth1 and eth5 while
eth2, eth3 and eth4 have been removed.

man udevinfo hints that udevinfo might be able to list
all the Ethers recognized by udev. Unfortunately, there
are zero examples(!) and the man page is too sketchy
for me. I do not see how to get a list.

With any luck, someone out there has figured out how
to use udevinfo.

Thanks, ... Peter E.

Is the printer known to work in Debian?

Not directly, but it's a Canon IP4200, which has Linux drivers (abet RPMs which
I've found repackaged (old) by a kind Japanese fellow, though I'm just
using the Canon RPMs and alien for the time being). Few niggles aside, seems to
work.

What are you using to configure the printer, the gnome-printer menu item or
127.0.0.1:631.

I started off using KDE's printer section in Control Center, but that was/is a
bit flaky. I eventually got the printer added though. I find job
manipulation and sending test jobs works best from localhost:631 though.

Try to avoid using the gnome-printer-config because it is very buggy. Open
up 127.0.0.1:631 and go to admin and add printer and it will walk you through
a little wizard. When all is done it will ask for your username and
password that you use for logging onto the computer, don't use root. If this
don't work then add the user that your parents will be to lpadmin. How I did
it was to go to gnome-user-groups menu item and select group
tablpadminproperties buttonselect my name and click add. Now that you
added the user try 127.0.0.1:631 again and it should accept your username and

password. assuming the printer works in the first place under Linux.

I have everyone in lpadmin and lp for testing, and they al seem to be able to
use the localhost:632 tools, but I'll have another look at your steps to see if
anything else happens when you follow them, thanks for your help!

application to maintain donors' account

2008-06-29 Thread H.S.

Hello,

Somebody I know in a small non-profit organization has asked me if can
help them setup an small system which will do basic accounting. All they
require is that:

1. it maintain a database of donors
2. it maintain what those donors donated
3. and be able to produce yearly concise report who donated what and
also print out a receipt at the end of an year for tax purposes on the
total amount donated by each donor.

I am not familiar with accounting stuff so I thought of throwing these
requirements at some lists for suggestions. Some things that come to my
mind are: make a small Web application using mysql to enter/edit donor's
information. Or use gnucash in some way. Or use openoffice.org with main
merge in some way to talk to an mysql database or to a OOo spread sheet.
But I guess better knowledgeable people in this field will be able to
direct me properly.

Thanks.
