Just install the packages with the servers. In the latest version they are openssh-server and telnetd (or another package providing telnet-server). This may be different in previous versions, but you can find out packages with 'apt-cache search telnet' or a similar command. Note, however, that telnet is quite unsecure as it transmits passwords in cleartext. ssh is better, but old versions of both may have security problems. If you are going to have services running on your machine, it's highly recommended to upgrade to the latest stable version, Debian 5.0 because this version gets security fixes, unlike your ancient version. -- You know it's going to be a long day when you get up, shave and shower, start to get dressed and your shoes are still warm. -- Dean Webber Eduardo M KALINOWSKI edua...@kalinowski.com.br -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-user-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. This may be different in previous versions, but you can find out packages with 'apt-cache search telnet' or a similar command. Re: Problem with gettext files and Mutt.
I think you are overdoing it. I don't have a .mime.types file, nor any encoding settings in my .muttrc, I'm just using a terminal with proper UTF-8 support (rxvt-unicode). How are you testing the encodings of the files you send/receive? Thanks for the response. I'm using gnome-terminal. I started trying to do this thing because I was getting a lot of messages in plain us-ascii, and, I was getting mail in Spanish in iso..-1 badly rendered, therefore the charset-hoo for iso...-15, in order to see the accents. Now, Po files I send are always in utf-8, same as I receive. However, I was getting garbled iso...1 instead of the right thing when it came to receive it before. Then, mutt would also save the attachment with a garbled enconding. Now, with the fixes, when I send it, I get utf8 quoted, or plain/text with the right encoding but wrong mime, yet viewable (what po's are, just text). My problem is that the po is sometimes not viewable as app/gettext, quoted, attachement. This is available in /usr/share/doc/mutt. l10n support If you want to see non-ASCII characters on a Debian system, there's no use fiddling with the variable charset, as described in the manual page muttrc(5). Instead, you'll need to have the Debian package locales installed on your system and set the LANG or LC_CTYPE environment variable. e.g. US users will want to add export LC_CTYPE=en_US to their ~/.bashrc. That's way I tried everything. You say you just use that terminal and it works? How to create a SSI cluster using Debian?
Has anyone tried to create a cluster using Kerrighed patched Debian kernel ?? I need a kerrighed patched kernel image (along with source, and deb package) I would like to get some help on that. Seems that Debian has got very less support for HPC (except from some wiki pages and packages list) I read some pages on web but they are ubuntu centric with no reference to Debian. I wonder .. Is Ubuntu in real a 'debian unstable' distro or is it a completely another distro making its own changes to packages and using debian name as marketing gimmick? Is there something common between debian (stable) and ubuntu (whatever the latest version might be) besides having the same package manager (synaptic) ?? I hope this dosent create flame wars. Sadly, the kernel present in Debian Lenny is 2.6.26+17+lenny1 (i386 and amd64). Read below for further options. If there is not pre-compile kernel image in the repository, does it mean I myself have to compile it from source? You could compile your own kernel using kernel-package[1]. However, you could also leverage on the Lenny backports; the current backported kernel is 2.6.30+20~bpo50+1 [2]. You can learn more about backports here: http://wiki.debian.org/Backports and http://www.backports.org/dokuwiki/doku.php HTH. Can't vouch for the wireless-related items, but putting that G4 side by side with an old HP i386 desktop, everything in Debian looked the same to me so I would assume you can expect similar results. I installed from the dvd iso downloaded via jigdo if that matters. OpenSUSE supports PPC also, and is actually the first distro I tried on that G4 before smartening up and going with Debian. :) Mark

How to get infomations about server crash/freeze
Dear all, Our company has an linux server running debian lenny system. Last Saturday, i found the websites on the server is not accessable and ssh cannot connected either. But ping responed. I don't know howto deal with such a problem, except call IDS and request a reboot. Well, it's not a good way to 'solve' the problem:-) I guess maybe there are some logs about the failure or some tools to do record the failure. Please give me your advices.
