No me'n vaig ensortir.

There are two critical components for decryption: The salt values in the header itself and the key-slots. If the salt values are overwritten or changed, nothing (in the cryptographically strong sense) can be done to access the data, unless there is a backup of the LUKS header. If a key-slot is damaged, the data can still be read with a different key-slot, if there is a remaining undamaged and used key-slot. Note that in order to make a key-slot unrecoverable in a cryptographically strong sense, changing about 4-6 bits in random locations of its 128kiB size is quite enough.
Good day. I have to forward email ports from local net to the whole world. At the same time I have a local email server that functions too. - Therefore I have I divide the requests between those coming to the local one and those that go to the outer one. Having said that I have: world's net - 1.1.1.1 local net - 192.168.0.0/24 iptables firewall, w/ running email server - 192.168.0.1 eth0 - the world's net eth1 the local one. Is it all correct/safe in any way, or needs additional correction? 2. ___ - what should I use here in case I do not want to limit the access to a single email server? Re: replying to an old list thread.
Thank You for Your time and answer, Camaleón: Glad to help. I also learn a lot from this list :-) Me too. Hope I will be helpful to other Debian users too, one day. :) It does not work for me, nor I want it, actually. But it should be so - it is true. Does not work? :-? Yea, the browser and email client work under different users and this under the third's X session. :) The HTML code is a mailto:; link, so your default e-mail client should be launched as soon as you click on there. Maybe your e-mail cient is not being associated with the mailto:; handler? :-? Probably. ;) Anyway, this method lacks the most important thing, which is whole cited text in the message body, which you have to copy/paste in the new generated message with a proper quoting. Not very convenient, IMO. Yes, I forgot about it. Than I will do as it was suggested already here - start a new thread w/ the reference to the old one. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-user-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. problem installing Debian on dual boot with WinXP
Hi to Everyone, I wish to install Linux on a computer where MSWIN XP is already running. I thought I would first resize (shrink) the windows partition so as to create free space for Linux install. I did that, using GParted. Problem is : at next step, when trying to install Ubuntu 10.10 with an iso CD, the install system does not see any useful partition. It only sees /dev/sda, while it should show /dev/sda1 and /dev/sda2. Using SystemRescueCD', I am able to mount both partitions and display their size using 'df', but the Ubuntu install system does not see them. Whether I format /dev/sda2 to ext2 or ntfs, or if I just leave the space without formating, the Ubuntu install CD does not see any suitable space for that purpose. I came to wonder if, by any chance, my failure was due to that I did not create a partition table. The GParted iso CD offers this possibility, but then it warns you that creating a partition table will erase all data in all partitions.. So, maybe I should first create a backup of the MSWIN partition using Partimage, then run Gparted again and create a partition table, then install Ubuntu (if the iso CD finds what it needs once a new partition table is created), then restore the MSWIN saved partition... (or, maybe, the way around, that is, first restore MSWIN and install Ubuntu next) Prior to attempting such a risky process, I wish I had hints from those who have already tested, since a number of questions still remain : Is it allright to backup and restore a MSWIN partition ? Will the restored partition boot ? How about the MBR ? Shall I have to modify GRUB so that both systems work ? Dne, 07. 12. 2010 12:46:54 je Bernard napisal(a): Hi to Everyone, I wish to install Linux on a computer where MSWIN XP is already running. I thought I would first resize (shrink) the windows partition so as to create free space for Linux install. I did that, using GParted. Your absolutely *necessary* next step is to boot into Windows and do a scandisk. Windows has to recheck its own bits and pieces after being resized, or else... No. If you have a working Windows installation, you definitely do have a partition table. The GParted iso CD offers this possibility, but then it warns you that creating a partition table will erase all data in all partitions.. And that is exactly what will happen. So you don't want to do that. Creating a partition table erases *everything* that was previously on your disk. So, maybe I should first create a backup of the MSWIN partition using Partimage, then run Gparted again and create a partition table, then install Ubuntu (if the iso CD finds what it needs once a new partition table is created), then restore the MSWIN saved partition... (or, maybe, the way around, that is, first restore MSWIN and install Ubuntu next) IIRC Windows XP wouldn't work anymore, after such a process. What you want to do is leave the Windows partition(s) untouched. Install GNU/Linux on the freed space, and preferably have Grub install in the GNU/Linux partition, NOT on the MBR. That way, you minimize the risk of Windows having a fit. Prior to attempting such a risky process, I wish I had hints from those who have already tested, since a number of questions still remain : Is it allright to backup and restore a MSWIN partition ? Will the restored partition boot ? How about the MBR ? Shall I have to modify GRUB so that both systems work ? Does the GParted CD see your new partition? If so, feel free to format it to a GNU/Linux filesystem (I'd reccommend ext3). Then, Ubuntu installer should recognize it. If I were you, I wouldn't let Grub modify the MBR, I'd instruct it to install itself in the GNU/Linux partition. Optimally, it will detect your Windows installation and put it up in its menu. Now all you have to do is redirect your system to boot from the GNU/Linux partition (where Grub resides) instead of the MBR. Or, alternatively, make the Windows bootloader give you the choice of booting either XP or GNU/Linux (there are tutorials on the Net on how to modify Windows XP boot loader to do that). -- Cheerio, Klistvud http://bufferoverflow.tiddlyspot.com Certifiable Loonix User #481801 Please reply to the list, not to me. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-user-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Question about pam.d
Last night a new version of qpopper for squeeze appeared in my aptitude display and I downloaded and installed it. The only change that I could see was that the authentication settings have been changed. I'm looking at what was done in order to better understand how Debian/Gnu/Linux works. The new /etc/pam.d/qpopper contains: #%PAM-1.0 # /etc/pam.d/qpopper - specify the PAM behaviour of qpopper # # We fall back to the system default in /etc/pam.d/common-* @include common-auth @include common-account # We don't use password or session modules at all # @include common-password # @include common-session For my situation, bypassing authentication is absolutely the best choice, but I am curious as to how these lines achieve that goal. I look at the man page for pam.d and find an explanation of the format of this file. BUT... there is no mention of a service type '@include'. 'include' is explained, but not '@include'. I tried your suggested command, except that I changed /dev/fd0 to /dev/fd1, since I need the 5.25-inch drive, not the 3.5-inch drive, but other than that it was just as you suggested. No mount, no error message. The only output from dmesg is the original warning message: FAT: utf8 is not a recommended IO charset for FAT filesystems, filesystem will be case sensitive! which also comes out on the terminal, since I am issuing the command from an active Linux virtual console, not a terminal emulation window in X. Strange, indeed. I would try to load the floppies in another computer, maybe they become damaged somehow :-? Also, to discard any problem with squeeze, you can test it under a livecd (by instance, in lenny, I don't get that warning about utf-8 charset when accessing my floppy disks). Greetings, I recently hit the same problem, but assumed it was just my system playing up. Using a USB floppy drive, I created a FAT floppy from an image file, but when I wanted to change some files on it, it wouldn't mount. Copying the floppy to a file using dd, then mounting with loop option worked. There were no read or write errors during any of these processes (except on one bad floppy I tried). I found the same problem with an ext2 formatted floppy. mount -v -t ext2 /dev/sdb /media/floppy returns success, but nothing is mounted. I just tried partitioning the floppy with cfdisk, then creating an ext2 filesystem on /dev/sdb1. This mounted without a problem. I suspect this is a bug. Dom Following up to myself, after further testing. I only get this behaviour on one of my systems, all the others seem to handle mounting floppies fine. With a little bit of investigation, and the aid of strace, I now believe that the mount command *is* working correctly and mounting the floppy - then, almost instantly, something is unmounting it again. At first I thought it might be because my laptop has Gnome installed and the other machine I tested it on didn't, but I have since tried on another system with Gnome and that one is fine too. I shall keep investigating and maybe try cloning my laptop onto another machine with a non-USB drive. Feedback needed: How to disable services at startup... and keep them so.
Hello, A month ago, I disabled Network Manager service in my Squeeze system so it doesn't run on start up. I wanted to keep NM installed (just in case) but preferred to use the old ifup network setup method. So I issued update-rc.d network-manager remove and also disabled gnome NM applet from being started. So far so good, no more NM running at booting. A couple of days ago I lost network connectivity in that system (no Internet/local access because eth0 was not getting an IP from dhcp server, as used to). I had to restart the whole system in order to restore network connectivity (neither restarting networking service nor ifup/down eth0 had any positive effect). After a bit of digging, I realized that Network Manager service was running (!) again. I did not enable, so something happened which caused the service to be reengaged again. Looking into /var/log/apt/term.log I saw the following (sorry, the log is recorded in Spanish, hope is still clear): *** Log started: 2010-12-01 23:44:34 (...) After that, even though NM service was expressly disabled, the update seems to re-enabled it again. Before I fill a bug report (I think a service that has been manually disabled should keep its state regardless any further update it can be applied afterwards), I would like to get some feedback... what do you think on this matter? Maybe you have to manually select the partitions or tell the installer to look in another place (under some kind of advanced settings?). I have installed XP and Debian without a problem. But the other day I needed to do exactly this, install Ubuntu 10.10 on a dual boot with Windows. It refused to see the empty space, although I tried every method I could think of. Because the 10.10 installation was urgent, I wiped the XP off the disk and let 10.10 start from scratch. Annoying, as XP had taken me a day on and off to install, was a right pain, and I had hoped to leave it alone. I also had 10.10 refuse to quadrupal boot on another machine with Debian and 2 other versions of Ubuntu. I keep hoping that Ubuntu and I will make peace. Then something like this happens and I flee back as soon as I can to Debian. But 10.10 is great for getting a desktop rapidly to the point of using multimedia to the satisfaction of my granddaughter. For everything else I find it a pain. :-( A bug in Ubuntu installer? :-? Let me see if can find any install guide for it... yes, here: https://help.ubuntu.com/10.10/installation-guide/i386/module-details.html#di-partition Under Partitioning and Mount Point Selection section, it says the user can choose an automatic/guided or manual partitioning: (...) First you will be given the opportunity to automatically partition either an entire drive, or available free space on a drive. This is also called “guided” partitioning. If you do not want to autopartition, choose Manual from the menu. I never select an automatic setup as it does not always sets the options I need. So if the automatic wizard fails to detect the available partitions, better proceed with Manual. Manual partitioning has to detect the available drives and partitions, if not, the Ubuntu installer has a big problem (I understand it can have any issue for detecting fake raid controllers or some special LVM setup, but plain sata/ide hard disks and their partitions have to be detected) :-) Greetings, -- Camaleón -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-user-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. I wanted to keep NM installed (just in case) but preferred to use the old ifup network setup method. So I issued update-rc.d network-manager remove and also disabled gnome NM applet from being started. So far so good, no more NM running at booting. Seems like a good way to go. Cool. Err... I mean, interesting. Looking into /var/log/apt/term.log I saw the following (sorry, the log is recorded in Spanish, hope is still clear): snip Basically, the log says on December 1st there was an update for NM and a new package got installed (0.8.1-4). After that, even though NM service was expressly disabled, the update seems to re-enabled it again. I don't read spanish, but my french is ok, and tha'ts what I would've guessed had happened Before I fill a bug report (I think a service that has been manually disabled should keep its state regardless any further update it can be applied afterwards), I would like to get some feedback... what do you think on this matter? I missed something -there is a better way to handle this or should I write a report? I'd definitely hold off on the bug report. I think you should look at the lsb headers of the network-manager script in /etc/init.d and change them to stop on all levels, start on none, then run insserv without any arguments to again disable network-manager. I also specified it in /etc/hosts in ray003. This is an new thing for Squeeze, The same configuration was working with Lenny. Another thing I found was that it didn't recognize the default host file at /etc/openmpi/openmpi-default-hostfile It worked after I manually added the line orte_default_hostfile = /etc/openmpi/openmpi-default-hostfile in the /etc/openmpi/openmpi-mca-params.conf Is there anybody have an answer for these? Correct me if I'm wrong, but I expect this file (as any file located here) can be updated at any time and so replacing any of the customized values I can have written in there :-? Yes, that is what I am suggesting. And if the upgrade overwrites your changes, you should file a bug report and ask the maintainer to come into compliance with Debian Policy: The /etc/init.d scripts must be treated as configuration files, either (if they are present in the package, that is, in the .deb file) by marking them as conffiles, or, (if they do not exist in the .deb) by managing them correctly in the maintainer scripts (see Configuration files, Section 10.7). This is important since we want to give the local system administrator the chance to adapt the scripts to the local system, e.g., to disable a service without de-installing the package, or to specify some special command line options when starting a service, while making sure their changes aren't lost during the next package upgrade. [1] AND Configuration file handling must conform to the following behavior: - local changes must be preserved during a package upgrade, and - configuration files must be preserved when the package is removed, and only deleted when the package is purged. [2] Best, AM [1] http://www.debian.org/doc/debian-policy/ch-opersys.html#s-sysvinit [2] http://www.debian.org/doc/debian-policy/ch-files.html#s-config-files I can try it though, just want to be sure this is not going to cause any problem in the future :-) Oh, and thanks both, Mike and you, for replying.
