As I'm used to use vim and terminals - I have to confess, that I don't know 
bc. KCalc is foolproof - I don't need to read a manual to use it ;)

But I have to confess, I'm quite lazy - so if I have the choice between a gui-

Ok, I tried several installations, but the question about utc settings is not 
there. Not on normal installation, neither on expert installation. So I was 
fooled by my mind.

I don't know, when it has disappeared.

But, I believe, that hwclock interpretation as utc is unix/linux standard, so 
doing so without question would be fine. Breaking that standard should not 
happen without user notification. No matter whether in standard or expert mode.

So I would appreciate a lot a message like "The installer detected a windows 
installation. It is recommended to change hwclock to local settings. Would you 
like to change hwclock settings to local mode?" - and then its up to the taste 
of the user.

For me its the same question like the root account. As there is no 
professional ix-system without root account - its natural to have it on debian 
systems. Only systems like ubuntu consider the user as too stupid to give him 
a root account.

So the habbit of silently break the standards may be ok for other linux 
systems, but not for debian. Therefor I vote for the utc-question before 
changing /etc/default/rcS to local.

No - not at all.

To change time-settings you'll need to authorize as superuser and the changes 
then will change system settings.

I think, current time will never be a question of taste, so it makes no sense 
at all, having a per-user-timezone.

AFAIK this isn't critical.  I just checked one of my servers, all of
which have a 100MB /boot partition at the outside cylinder of the drive.
 The first cylinder of any modern drive, especially single platter
drives, is going to be many gigabytes in size.  Thus, I'm pretty sure my
100MB boot partitions do NOT end on cylinder boundaries.  However, I
don't receive the notification you do.

message.

If you just quit the -b flag team, then you might want to come over to
the -a flag team. "-b" is for backup and "-a" is for archive. What's
the difference between a backup and an archive?, you might ask. Well,
the archive team has better jerseys.

For keeping a one to one copy of a file system, this rsync shortcut is
commonly thrown around:

rsync -av --del /source/path /destination/path

That is just an example. 
You need to replace cdimage.raw with the image you wish to burn to CD.

Change into the directory where the file you wish to burn is.
It will probably end in ".iso", say it is CD1.iso
It is easier to change to root.
Then issue:

r...@fischer:~# wodim -v speed=2 dev=/dev/hda CD1.iso

That should work, and hey! no KDE involved!

Any problems report back with the errors.

What I understand from the man page is that those files need to be
manually created by the user or by root, not just by running the
command. I can be wrong, though.

That is not so on my amd64 box. I
have partitions for stable/testing/sid and new-testing. None of them
have an /etc/cups/lpoptions file or any ~/.cups directories.


Mine neither :-). I think when someone sets the printer settings using
CUPS web interface, those values are stored somewhere, in another place.


I have looked through the docs and I have yet to find any mention on
what should be in the .cups/lpoptions files.  I made .cups dirs for
root and myself put the output of lpoptions in a lpoptions file. That
does not help with my problem.  I believe it will help the OP with his
though.

Cups interface at localhost:631 will not connect to any of the tabs 
except Home and Online Help.  All others say "500 Internal Server Error".


As this thread was about, yet another cups problem, and I had not 
remembered running lpoptions before I decided to see if it would/could

assist me in solving problem.


OTOH, it is not very clear for me what is exact role of those files. If
we read this doc:

cups working on a lenny (from CD) to Testing partition which is better
then nothing.

As a possible side note that may be of help to others having a similar
problem with cups.  The 3 partitions that cups is not working on were
installed on the HD by a company that advertizes Debian / RedHat systems
installs.  It turned out RedHat is what they know and I believe they
have something installed incorrectly for Debian.  The only partition
that works correctly is the one I installed from Debian CD's. This drive
came with a system purchased 3-4 years ago.

Hope this might be of use to others.


I've never had any problem with CUPS, but true is that all the printers we
have at the office are very well supported by Linux (all are PostScript
or PCL6 based and using network adapters, just one of them is shared via
windows an using a samba backend), and still had not to play with
printers shared over a big network with VPN's or firewalls in between ;-)


I have only had a problem with cups on this AMD64 system.  It was 
working fine on an 586 box, which I have used for years, until it (the 
586 system) died.  The Printer is an HP6P which I have used on all my 
Debian systems since 1994.

usb drive nolonger registers on one pc, still registers on another

A Toshiba usb hard drive previously registered with no difficulty on one
computer but still registers with no difficulty on a seconcd computer.
Both computers are using the Linux 2.6.32-5-amd64 stock kernel but the
one with the problem was just updated and the one with no problem was
updated last August.

By failing to register I mean that when connected I get a continuing
series of messages like this:

If you post the full output of (apt-cache policy) as Andrei requested, I'm 
sure someone can propose apt_preferences(5) stanzas that give you good 
results.

Mmm, no, I don't think so. Or at least I didn't get in that way.

What I understand from the man page is that those files need to be 
manually created by the user or by root, not just by running the 
command. I can be wrong, though.

Mine neither :-). I think when someone sets the printer settings using 
CUPS web interface, those values are stored somewhere, in another place.

OTOH, it is not very clear for me what is exact role of those files. If 
we read this doc:

I've never had any problem with CUPS, but true is that all the printers we 
have at the office are very well supported by Linux (all are PostScript 
or PCL6 based and using network adapters, just one of them is shared via 
windows an using a samba backend), and still had not to play with 
printers shared over a big network with VPN's or firewalls in between ;-)

Thanks.  I know about aplay -l/-L, and I know about amixer and muting
and alsaconf.  (I have been running Debian for ten years now, starting
with Potato.)  But typically whatever sound card is on-board is not
listed.

Perhaps I am getting lazy, but my time for diagnositics is limited,
and USB sound works.

The error says that the partition is not aligned to the physical sector
size which presumably incurs a performance penalty. When setting things
up, I chose not to care about that (didn't remember seeing such a

ACK, I would just expect better read performance because of the
striping, but I don't really know much about RAIDs (it's my first) and I
mostly used the default settings.

You can create RAID10 with three disks using mdadm. It's not exactly the
same as RAID1 over RAID0:

I just removed one of the WD10EARs from the RAID and used parted to
partition it:

Yes.  But it just connects your keyboard and handles the ssl

That would be within the realm of a chat client.  Using the openssl
program like that is rather like using telnet to connect to the smtp
port to send email.  It can do it as long as you type in all of the
right commands but that isn't the intended purpose.

Your best direction is to use a chat client that has been written to
those things.

Linux Desktop Enviroments need to stop trying to compete to impress
microsoft users and N00b's and stick to what Linux is all about,
clean, efficient, FAST! If people really feel they NEED desktop
widgets either make it add on software or make a third party desktop
environment based off the main environment. The way it is now KDE and
Gnome, the two biggest are competing for 'most bloat award' and the
sleek fast environments like lxde are basing their systems off the
giants so all the real customization of the past is just plain
gone...

STOP LETTING N00b's DEFINE OUR OS!

That sounds decent, how are you achieving RAID 1 over 0 (10) though with three 
drives? Perhaps that is another topic, but I typically see transfer rates of 
~100MB/s give or take from a single modern SATA drive.

I really hate that because 2 feature that i really love/need in any

Firefox4 will "mouse over link" print next to real URL (in URL field) 
and not in status bar and that's really sucks if you don’t have 24" monitor.

I am running squeeze with two WD10EARS drives (plus another different
drive) in a RAID10. When setting things up, I decided to ignore this
issue completely because I thought the tools would do the right thing
automatically. Apparently, they don't, although the drive reports its
correct physical sector size:

and you'll see what's muted - I bet it's the problem you are facing

also it's usually better reading instead asking, as we've discussed audio
issues many many times and there are straight forward actions to report the
status of your system.

I think we only disagree on terminology ;) As far as I know "system 
time" is always UTC on a Linux system[1], which is then converted to 
local time as needed.

[1] assuming it is accurate, of course

I have experienced problems with a variety of Intel (845 & 865) and
Asus motherboards.

Prior to my discovery of USB sound, I would simply install a clone
sound card, then sound would work.  But the Lexicon external USB card
is much more versatile.  

My conclusion is that life is too short (and USB sound is too
inexpensive) for me to continue to mess around with on-the-motherboard
sound.

I would suggest to ask or to look into the development branches of the linux
kernel or ask the kernel usb audio developers. It might be that they need
to add just the id to the code to get support for it.If you have some C
programming skills you even can try hacking it yourself.

Another option and I think here the problem is that alsa is not working for
this device - thus the system recognizes it but can not associate it with a
driver (snd-usb-audio).

I assume that at some point during the burn process 'cdimage.raw' is
created by wodim from the files selected for burning.  If it had been
created in this way it certainly did not exist after K3B was closed, as
I never save these files on closing.  I suppose it is even possible that
for some reason it never got created.  In the KDE window the last entry
said something to the effect that there inadequate permission to execute
the second-to-last step in the process, actually burning the CD.  What
the debug file showed I quoted in my first post.

Iceweasel 3.5.x is only available for Lenny by means of the "backports" 
repo so... could it be that you installed that way and then forgot it or 
maybe you tweaked the backports repo pinning settings under your "/etc/
apt/preferences" file? :-?

partially broken internet connection

Hi list,

(Might be unrelated) Yesterday I configured some extra rules on my
gateway box (Debian Etch) to slow down traffic from a particular part of
the network. It started at that time.

The new rules work and speedtest.net showed correct results from both
network segments. However from that moment on (more than 24 hours ago)
some internet pages had trouble loading. The website from my ISP still
works fine, as do most other.
Some sites however don't seem to load anything more than the title and
the favicon, this is happening for all machines on the 'fast' segment
(haven't tested others) and in about every flavor of browser.
Sites that don't load include slashdot.org, linuxtoday.com and
speedtest.net.

Running wireshark on the client machine shows that the page content
(html) is received, but in the browser, the page stays completely empty.

Any suggestions? Ideas?
The limiting is done using tc and iptables, but as I said, seems to work
correctly.

The mix of those packages (mostly "kernel" and "xserver" packages) can be 
also the cause of unexpected problems.

As you are using the same kernel and xorg packages than squeeze, you now 
have to play the same way squeeze does (or at least that seems to be the 
most logical approach). Squeeze does not need to use a "/etc/X11/
xorg.conf" file at all, neither for managing the keyboard settings nor 
for display: nowadays all this stuff has to be automatically configured 
and setup by Xorg.

If you are having issues with your keyboard layout, first place to look 
is at your Xorg log (/var/log/xorg.0.log) and search for any warnings.

If there are no evident clues, you can also try to configure your 
keyboard by using your DE tools (GNOME and KDE both have nice tools for 
setting up the keyboard layout options and the the behavior of the rest 
of the compose keys -like alt, windows key or control-).

Your last resort is manually editing and adjust the "/etc/default/
keyboard" file, starting first with a minimal/basic file and then adding 
the required tweaks.

Then remove that file and let's try another thing. What gives you "cat /
proc/asound/modules"?

Hi Camaleón, thanks for your reply in other message. I did 

 rm ~/.cups/lpoptions

and am able to use whatever default system printer lpadmin designated.

I guess I got, as David pointed out, 403 "Forbidden". But that's only for 
setting the default printer via the CUPS web interface. Other things, eg, 
adding a printer, work fine. 

Since everything is working fine for me now. I'll move onto other things 
from now.

Problem is solved. If you have the b flag as one of your flags
as in "backup," it apparently insures that once a file is there,
it does not go away. This could be very useful in some
situations, but this is not what I wanted right now so I took
out the b flag and it now deletes any files in the copy that are
no longer in the master.

regular user to the lpadmin group to give that user permissions to 
configure printers through the CUPS Web interface. Having done this on 
my systems allows me to use that interface for adding / removing / 
configuring printers through that interface using only my normal user 
name and password.

As per "man lpoptions":

Maybe you can try by tweaking things in each "~/.cups/lpoptions" user

that is exactly what --delete does. I've been using it for some time and
it works just fine for me.

are you sure it is not working ? that is strange...

rsync; Shouldn't Deleted Files be Deleted on the Backup?

I really like rsync but I have something set wrong. It copys the
file system perfectly but if I delete a file on the master, I
really want it to delete on the backup system.

I tried --delete, --delete-during and --delete-after with no
effect.

Can I do the incremental backup that effects only the
changed files and have it remove those files that exist on the
copy but no longer exist on the master?

I don't agree. The default should be the default time zone for the 
system (which is usually based on the country/area selected during 
install).

These are per-user settings, then?  Such a thing certainly should not be
touching the system configuration.  Are you sure it isn't just setting
the user's TZ variable?  IMHO the correct default for that should be
null so that system time gets used.

I would even settle for a Linux version if properly packaged for Debian. 
After all, I did trust Mr. Ghisler with my files for many years and I 
would again if I had to use Windows. Given the reasonable one-time 
licence fee I would even consider buying it!

An I'm giving gnome-commander another try. The first thing I noticed is 
that it doesn't have a keyboard shortcut for toggling show hidden files 
and you can't chose what columns (not) to show.

I usually have about 20 panels (10 each side) and the most attractive feature: 
every action works without touching the mouse - I'm very keyboard centric ;)

But I will give tuxcmd a try.

No, I refer to the kde settings dialog, where all desktop-settings can be 
changed. The same configuration page is accessible from the clock in the 
destop-bar.

I'm not shure, but I think the utc-option was there on kde 3.x
I see that timesettings-dialog with that utc-checkbox in my mind, but I can't 
asure where it was from.

Ok, I'll do another installation just to validate, that I did nothing wrong by 
myself. Additionally I'll try an expert installation too.

Every time I experimented with two-pane file managers I kept coming back 
to Tux Commander (package tuxcmd). While it does have it's quirks it is 
closest to the habits I acquired on Windows using Windows/Total 
Commander.

I doubt it depends on package(s) selected, but rather on whether you do 
an expert install or not.

Do you mean the mini-config done by KDE3 at first start? That can have 
no influence on the system clock, only on user timezone. Or do you mean 
the old base-config program, back when the installation was done in two 
steps (sarge was the last release to use this IIRC)?

The fact is that by removing "gcc-4.2-base" it triggers the uninstall of 
those "essential" packages which make the package manager to "ring the 
bell".

But curious is that some of those packages are not "essential" but are 
selected to be unistalled as they were... from OP's log, "apt" and "das", 
for instance :-?

I know on installing gnome the installer asks, whether the hwclock is UTC.
I don't remember, if the question appeared on kde-installation, but if it 
appeared and the user selects UTC, it is not reasonable, that the installer 
silently ignores the selection and changes hwclock to local mode.

On former systems there was a checkbox on desktop time configuration - so it 
was easy to switch system from utc to local mode or back to utc. I don't know, 
why this option disappeared.

As you can see in this thread /etc/default/rcS is not well known to be related 
to time settings. I had to google too.
So I think, the former behaviour was weired for windows user and the current 
behaviour is weired for linux users. 
Time settings are already protected to superuser - so why not bring that 
checkbox back to time settings dialog? May be with a little flyover help for 
windows user explaining the sense of that checkbox?

For me - debian stands for the freedom of individual choice - it does not 
silently force any user to something he don't want (like i.e. ubuntu does).
So its only consequent to have that choice during installation.

Leave some of the "/etc/default/keyboard" values empty, for example:

XKBLAYOUT="us,de"
XKBVARIANT=""
XKBOPTIONS=""

And see what happens.

I may be severely off-base here, but those chips are quite old. IIRC,  
it was possible to configure them differently via BIOS settings and/or  
via motherboard jumpers (depending on your motherboard). There is a  
slight chance that, when configured differently, they might work...

It would be an additional hassle for people installing dual-boot 
machines (usually not experienced Debian users) and it is easy enough to 
change in /etc/default/rcS

While I'm not familiar with Kalk, I was a *huge* fan of Krusader too,  
at the time. I've since settled for gnome-commander because it's a

Yes, in this sense I say thank you too :)
I'm now using gnome for about half a year and it is quite attractive. Lean, 
reasonable menues and the best - things work as expected.
There is very little functionality I miss at gnome.
But i.e. I can't live without krusader, which is heavily bound to kde 
internals. Or look at Kalk - there's no serious alternative on gnome systems.

I would like to support gnome, but I'm not the crack to build the missing 
stuff.

any way - thanks to kde I looked around searching for alternatives.

Howdie, fellow Debianites!

I'm planning to surprise my unsuspecting self with the above hard drive  
for Christmas, but have read some alarming reports about  
incompatibilities with GNU/Linux partitioning. Apparently, there are no  
less than two distinct problems with these drivers:


1) an alignment problem due to the passage from 512-byte to 4096-byte  
sector sizes, which seems to heavily affect transfer rates, and
2) a possibly related, but separate nonetheless, problem of wrong drive  
sizes being recognized (either by the BIOS and/or by the kernel); such  
as, 1TB being recognized instead of 2TB.

AFAIK this is warning is only done for packages with "Essential: yes".

Then, added the line below to /apt/preferences

Package: tor
Pin: origin "deb.torproject.org"
Pin-Priority: 900

I gave 900 since the testing repo, with the highest pin number, is also
900, so aptitude automatically chooses the highest version. However,
when I do "apt-get cache policy tor", it shows that torproject.org is
still 500. Because aptitude installed the right version, it did not
bother me much.

There was also another example, I tried, like:

Package: tor
Pin: version 0.2.1.27*
Pin-Priority: 1001

I don't know why, but this failed. It still tried to install v0.2.1.26
from testing repo.

One can say that there isn't any difference between v0.2.1.26 and
v0.2.1.27, be right. Yet, it was an educational thing for me :)
