Shutdown via SSH

2015-06-17 Thread Nathan Malo

sur mon SSH du genre System is going down for ..., la console
n'affiche rien après ma commande, puis mon ordi me dit broken pipe et
sort de la session SSH.

C'est un comportement voulu/bug/feature ?

Merci d'avance pour vos réponses,

Cordialement,

Nathan MALO

How about a portable wireless hotspot device and service? The way I
understand how those work, you will have your Internet service with you
no matter where you are, as long as you can get a signal from your provider.

Is the video card driver required when we use command line??

Press Ctrl-Alt-F1 and see if a login prompt appears. If it does, the

but if you don't want X, you should probably check and see if a DM (such as
lightdm) is installed, then go from there.

You're in the US?

I'd suggest that a laptop with WiFi will work in urban areas fairly well - free
WiFi in coffee shops / malls / supermarkets / convenience stores etc.

It'll be useless outside those areas: home cable/DSL will normally come with
a Wifi router these days so a laptop / desktop will work with that.

I'm not sure whether any one of the US operators do the equivalent to FON -
free WiFi for home subscribers to their service who can then piggy back on the
service of any other subscribers

Mobile dongles are expensive and not good for relaible connectivity outside
urban areas / areas
with really good mobile / cell coverage - though a
deal faster than 56k. I wouldn't want to use one to keep my system updated, for
example.

If you've money, a satellite modem will work anywhere that isn't a Faraday cage
where a
GPS might also work - but it is high cost bandwidth.

Hope this helps,

You can ping but not ssh. This suggests that services are not being
started. dmesg confirms this as nothing is showing up after the network
is brought up.

Since this seems to be a virtual machine, hooking up a monitor won't
work. I had a similar problem on a real machine that seemed to be USB
related and was fixed by upgrading to Jessie. In your case the reverse
happened.

Try changing your VM's hardware settings, removing something not
absolutely necessary one piece at a time until you find what is causing
the boot to hang.

ssh root@machine_distante 'shutdown -h now'

if so, check which one is the default in BIOS. [I have, in the past, had

Install the absolute bare minimum: use a Debian expert install to allow you
to answer all questions in detail, install only the base system, perhaps
with the SSH server added.

That will install a small text mode system - 280 packages or so - and
should allow you to build on that by adding packages slowly.

Hope this helps a little - logs or more detail will help debug problems

All the best,

AndyC

PHP-FPM socket disappearing

2015-06-17 Thread Proxy One
Hello,

I installed Jessie on my new server few days ago and moved website that run
previously on Centos 5. I'm using Apache and PHP-FPM. Currently, there is only
one website on that server, but I still configured pool for it. What's
happening is that, after some time, at least once a day, socket that should be
listening for that user disappears, resulting in this error in Apache error log:

FastCGI: incomplete headers (0 bytes) received from server
/dev/shm/user-php.fcgi
FastCGI: failed to connect to server /dev/shm/user-php.fcgi

Looking at /dev/shm/ directory, user-php.sock is really missing, but
default php5-fpm.sock is still there.

I have this block in VirtualHost section for that website:
IfModule mod_fastcgi.c
Alias /php5-fcgi /dev/shm/pdfconve-php.fcgi
/IfModule

Pool configured:

[user]
listen = /dev/shm/user-php.sock
listen.owner = user
listen.group = www-data
listen.mode = 0660
user = user
group = user
pm = dynamic
pm.max_children = 40
pm.max_requests = 2048
pm.start_servers = 30
pm.min_spare_servers = 10
pm.max_spare_servers = 35
request_terminate_timeout = 305

And there is also
FastCGIExternalServer /dev/shm/user-php.fcgi -socket /dev/shm/user-php.sock
-pass-header Authorization -flush -appConnTimeout 2 -idle-timeout 60
in apache conf.

There is nothing interesting in php-fpm error log. There are some errors like
this:
NOTICE: [pool user] child 32719 exited with code 0 after 76324.921427 seconds
from start

followed by this line:
NOTICE: [pool user] child 29909 started

but I don't think that's relevant.

Any idea why this is happening and how to prevent it?

Thanks!

Re: ThinkPad R51 creeping segmentation faults

2015-06-17 Thread Paul Ausbeck
Thanks to everyone who read and/or responded to my query. I've got some
additional information that may prompt some additional discussion.

It seems there there is some chance that the problem is due to a RAM
fault. I had run memtest86+ before I made the initial posting and hadn't
gotten any failure indication. More recently I've run a program called
memtester that runs not at boot time, but under linux. It can't test all
memory, but about 90%. linux itself appears to be quite stable on this
machine with no other problems after more than four days of uptime and
quite a bit of activity on the machine. So I'm not that concerned about
the memory that can't be tested as it doesn't seem to be the source the
of the problem. Anyhow, memtester hasn't found any failures at all thus
far.

Running memtester showed that the segmentation fault problem could be
cleared by allocating a large block of memory and then freeing it,
thereby kind of resetting the system heap and minimizing the memory used
for buffers and cached pages. So the problem really isn't that critical
any more, in that if it occurs I can just free up system buffers and
cached pages:

echo 3 | sudo tee /proc/sys/vm/drop_caches

and everything just hums along until some other future time, when said
incantation can just be done again.

I've also run across a system tool called pmap that shows the memory
map of an indicated process. As an example here's the memory map of the
ed editor. Quite a bit smaller than emacs, ~145M, and vi, ~45M.

pmap 4493

 total 3416K

I'm thinking that I can use this tool together with the grub BADRAM
facility, /etc/default/grub, to maybe find and map out failing memory
locations. If anyone has any experience with such things please post any
time saving hints that you may have.

It also turns out that building emacs is not that difficult, with the
proper incantations:

sudo aptitude install dkpg-dev
sudo apt-get build-dep emacs23
cd ~/src/emacs
apt-get source emacs23 --compile

But it also turns out that the resulting emacs binary is not the same as
the installed binary and indeed does not fault when the installed binary
does fault. The sizes of the two different binaries:

-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 6731016 Sep 9 2012 /usr/bin/emacs23-x
-rwxr-xr-x 1 paula paula 6825224 Jun 16 17:05 emacs23-x

seem to indicate some significant differences. Just for posterity, does
anyone have any insight into how one can build the identical Debian
binary to that installed?

Hmm, no. My system has ssh running but there are no traces of ssh in
dmesg at all. dmesg is only about kernel messages. ssh is userspace
and it's logged elsewhere (for example, auth.log)

My crazy ideas about what this could be:

* A wrong /etc/fstab (systemd is picky about wrong lines in fstab).

* Trying to use ssh with password with the user root after
/etc/ssh/sshd_config has been updated to allow only public key.

If the user is able to boot into rescue mode, adding a suitable
  /root/.ssh/authorized_keys should be easy.

Since this seems to be a virtual machine, hooking up a monitor won't work.
 [...]

Well, the cloud providers I've tested allow you to use a serial
console where you can log into the system and use journalctl to see
what happened, even if eth0 is down. I would try that.

To me this would suggest that the OpenSSH service isn't even running on my

 I'll try the fstab suggestion and get back to you, that might be possible;
I have edited it since my last reboot.

Since this seems to be a virtual machine, hooking up a monitor won't
 work.
  [...]

Well, the cloud providers I've tested allow you to use a serial
console where you can log into the system and use journalctl to see
what happened, even if eth0 is down. I would try that.

System not booting

2015-06-17 Thread Peter Reid
Hello,

I recently rebooted my Debian 8 (Jessie) system, which I upgraded from
Wheezy upon the release of Debian 8. I shutdown my system and restarted it,
and the system does not appear to be 'booting'.

*Description:*
The system boots and responds to ping on both IPv4 and IPv6 interfaces,
however no network facing services are starting (source: nmap); hence I
cannot SSH into the server.

*Current Attempts to fix:*
I attempted to reboot once more (hard reboot from host control panel), that
did not solve the issue. I have since rebooted into my provider's
(SoYouStart by OVH) rescue mode, and have found some info in the logs that
may be of use

*System information:*
Debian 8 ( had latest packages installed) - previously Debian 7
Processor: Intel Xeon(R) CPU W3520 @ 2.67GHz
RAM: 16096MB
HDD: 2 x 2000 GB in mdraid - RAID 1

*Logs*
I'm really stuck with this issue, the only log I can think to provide is
dmesg, the last few lines are as follows:

If any of you can be of assistance I would greatly appreciate it, I can
provide log files upon request also.
I would really like to get my system back on line as soon as possible, as I
need it for my work next week.

That's strange; I always thought you had to set the hardware clock
(hwclock) for the modified date and time to survive a reboot.

After a reboot I am sure the boot time hwclock set the time. The
system time set by date evaporates when the system shuts down. System
time is not preserved across reboots. But at boot time the boot time
script /etc/init.d/hwclock.sh sets the time from the hardware clock.

Best is to install ntp and have it set the time from the network at
boot time.

  apt-get install ntp

If you don't have a network then of course ntp can't work. For
systems such as the Raspberry Pi that don't have a hardware clock the
time is set to a best guess based upon the most recent timestamp on a
statefile in the file system to keep time moving forward.

Press Ctrl-Alt-F1 and see if a login prompt appears. If it does, the
machine is trying to start X and failing. I would try to get X running, but
if you don't want X, you should probably check and see if a DM (such as
lightdm) is installed, then go from there.

If no X was installed using Ctrl-Alt-F1 won't exit it.

Since no desktop was installed the going black is probably the
kernel's bitmapped framebuffer at boot. Try booting with nomodeset on
the kernel command line and see if that improves things. To do that
interact with the grub boot loader and add that to the boot command
line.

Newer Linux kernels now set the graphics modes very early in the boot
process. This is something that used to happen with X starting but
now happens by the kernel at boot time even without X. It enables the
kernel to present boot splash screens and allows switching between X
screens and kernel screens without changing video modes. And when the
graphics is not supported it tends to break things. Using nomodeset
instructs the kernel not to do this and to use the BIOS modes
instead. Using nomodeset now breaks X because X now relies upon the
kernel mode setting. But it should get your text console working
again. Hopefully. Give it a try and see.

Re: PHP-FPM socket disappearing

2015-06-17 Thread Bob Proulx
Proxy One wrote:
I installed Jessie on my new server few days ago and moved website

Welcome! :-)

 I'm using Apache and PHP-FPM.

I have become an Nginx + php5-fpm advocate in recent years. If you
decide you would like to give it a try post something and I will show
my configurations for it. (Not that I am a master of it by any means.
Just a daily user of it.)

Currently, there is only one website on that server, but I still
configured pool for it. What's happening is that, after some time,
at least once a day, socket that should be listening for that user
 disappears, ...
...
Looking at /dev/shm/ directory, user-php.sock is really missing, but
 default php5-fpm.sock is still there.

Odd!

I have this block in VirtualHost section for that website:
 IfModule mod_fastcgi.c
 Alias /php5-fcgi /dev/shm/pdfconve-php.fcgi
 /IfModule
...
 And there is also
 FastCGIExternalServer /dev/shm/user-php.fcgi -socket /dev/shm/user-php.sock
 -pass-header Authorization -flush -appConnTimeout 2 -idle-timeout 60
 in apache conf.

Hmm... Is that right? It is working for you so it must be. And
since the disappearing fpm socket shouldn't be related I am going to
ignore my ignorance of the above here.

 Pool configured:

 [user]
 listen = /dev/shm/user-php.sock
 listen.owner = user
 listen.group = www-data
 listen.mode = 0660
 user = user
 group = user
 pm = dynamic
 pm.max_children = 40
 pm.max_requests = 2048
 pm.start_servers = 30
 pm.min_spare_servers = 10
 pm.max_spare_servers = 35
 request_terminate_timeout = 305

Why use /dev/shm/user-php.sock as the socket path? The Jessie-style
location would be in /var/run/user-php.sock AFAICS. (I don't see how
that would be related to your socket dissappearing.)

There is nothing interesting in php-fpm error log. There are some errors like
 this:
NOTICE: [pool user] child 32719 exited with code 0 after 76324.921427 seconds
 from start

 followed by this line:
NOTICE: [pool user] child 29909 started

 but I don't think that's relevant.

Is that just hitting your max_requests limit and exiting? In which
case that would be normal operation.

Any idea why this is happening and how to prevent it?

I am running php5-fpm on several servers. I as a matter of course set
up my own custom pool configurations with a different socket name.
But always in /var/run. I have not had any problems with with the
socket disappearing. One is on Jessie 8, one on Sid, the rest on
Wheezy 7. I haven't seen any endemic problem assocatied with php5-fpm.

The first thing I would try is to move the socket location out of
/dev/shm (which is symlinked to /run/shm in Jessie 8) and see if the
behavior stops. If so then it must be related to that location. If
not then it rules that out as a suspect.

I would tend to also set up a monitor that would run very often, once
every minute wouldn't be too often, to check for the presence of the
socket file. If it dissappears then have it notify me immediately so
I could look to see what else happened around that same time period.
Because if it is getting removed I would think that something must be
removing it and that something will hopefully leave an audit trail.

  man 8 mount

Since you are using ext4 you can only use options from the Mount

code 23 is bad! There should have been error messages printed

  man rsync

You are having device errors! Check your syslog for kernel messages.
I suspect you will see I/O errors logged there.

  less /var/log/syslog

However usb enclosures are notoriously cheap and flakey. Don't panic
yet. Instead verify everything. Make sure you have a good USB port.
I have seen different USB ports on the same computer to be trouble.
One will work okay and another will fail.

Unmount and try using a different USB port. Or try mounting and
checking on a different computer system.

Or in more of a deep case I have removed the internal disk from
failing enclosures and mounted them directly with SATA and IDE cables.
The disk is often fine. More often I have had the USB enclosure fail.
Accessing the drive directly over SATA / IDE eliminates the USB
enclosure electroncs and for me has more than once completely solved
the problem.

Check the disk SMART error log. Here are some hints.

  smartctl -l error /dev/sdb | less

  smartctl -a /dev/sdb | less

  smartctl -t short /dev/sdb
  sleep 120 smartctl -l selftest /dev/sdb

  smartctl -t long /dev/sdb
  sleep $((60*20)) smartctl -l selftest /dev/sdb

  smartctl -a /dev/sdb

If it really looks like a disk problem then copy as much as you can
off the disk. For deeper rescue contemplate using ddrescue to extract
as much raw data from the drive as possible. More information about
ddrescue is available if needed. If the drive is failing then I would
copy the raw drive and then fsck the new copy. Or if you have rsync
copied as many files as practical already then you already have as
much as you will get and stop there. Working at the file system level
with rsync is much easier than trying to rescue raw bits of a file
system.

Good luck!

Re: Moving from 56k modem

2015-06-17 Thread Nate Bargmann
Hi Richard.

I faced a similar situation although a bit differently a few months ago.
The only WISP in the area announced they were shutting down the present
service which ran at 512 kbps and would offer upgrades to a new service
that runs 10 Mbps. Fine, but what they did not say officially was that
anyone outside of five miles from the towers they would implement the
new service on would be out of range and thus no service.

My remaining choices for the network here at the farm were satellite or
cellular. Our phones are with US Cellular and the other options were
Verizon or ATT. After speaking with the USCC agent I opted for their
20 GB/mo shared service between the two cell phones and an LTE router
for the farm office head end. While the data plan is $140/mo, the agent
used loyalty discounts to arrive at a price of about $200/mo for four
devices (two smart phones, the LTE router, and a plain flip phone) which
was equivalent to our old cell plan plus the former WISP charge per
month.

With the shared data plan our smart phones now have hotspot capability
enabled and I have had no issues using my Motorola Electrify M as a USB
tether with Debian 8. Network manager picks it right up and away I go
with 'Net access where I don't have access to WiFi. The phone is
running Android Kit Kat. I have also used an ipad mini (supplied by my
employer) as a USB tether as well. If you don't use Network manager you
may need to do some manual network configuration, but just be sure that
the plan you go with allows USB (and probably WiFi) tethering and you
should be good to go. Perhaps even try it in the store to be sure.

This is my very short recipe for that:

It's generally safe to upgrade the packages. The new ones won't be
brought into play until the VM is restarted.

The advice about reboots is good because until the kernel or service is
restarted, you are using the old kernel while new packages might have
been compiled for a newer kernel or service. Some services will be
restarted by the package installation (e.g. cups) but unless they need a
kernel service that has changed, it's still safe to carry on.

The bigger issue is if vulnerabilities were closed by the new kernel or
service. Not restarting leaves your machine vulnerable.

What questions should I be asking?

Please note that I am strongly text, rather than graphics, oriented.

Comments /or questions I should be asking.

There are phones which can be hooked up via USB, cellmodems
attached via either USB or ethernet, and hotspot devices which
attach to your network via wifi.

There are four major carriers in the US, which in descending
 order of coverage are:

 Verizon
 ATT
 T-Mobile
 Sprint

all of them cover every urban and most suburban areas. All of
them have some coverage on every major highway.

There are also a fluctuating number of MVNOs, mobile virtual
network operators. They are reliant on contracts with one or
more of the big four to provide the actual service.

Speed is variable by place, but even the worst available service
 should exceed 56Kb/s.

Service is available either prepaid or postpaid. Postpaid
generally involves a 1-3 year contract.

Service is available as CDMA, GSM, or LTE. Verizon and Sprint
use CDMA and LTE, on different bands. ATT and T-Mobile use GSM
and LTE, again on different bands. You can buy some devices
which are good on multiple bands, and others which are tied to
 a specific carrier.

LTE is often called 4G. Advanced CDMA and GSM services (high
speed, relatively) are called 3G. Basic CDMA and GSM services
are only slightly faster than a 56K modem, and are called 2G.

You might want to look at T-Mobile's $50/month 5GB data plan,
 Sprint's $35/month 3GB and $50/month 6GB plans, or Virgin
Mobile's $35/month unlimited plan, where the first 2.5GB of data
are at high speed (if available) and subsequent usage in a month
 is limited to 2G speeds.

I never joined a linux box or worked with command line for OpenLDAP. How

When I ran into that very same problem the problem was the new media I
bought. There are only a very few manufacturers of blank media. Be
that as it may be at least with cd-r disks the laser parameters are
mapped from the media manufacturer through known tables. If I used
older media that I had that worked previously then everything worked
fine. But if I tried to use the new media then I couldn't write them.

The only solution I know is to upgrade the dvd writer. But first you
might try any older media that you still have hanging around. If
older media works but newer media does not then you likely have the
same problem.

If there was a way to upgrade the firmware of your dvd writer that
would probably improve the situation too.

Since this seems to be a virtual machine, hooking up a monitor won't
 work.

Well, the cloud providers I've tested allow you to use a serial

what happened, even if eth0 is down. I would try that.

You're configuring a default gateway for both network interfaces, which
is a big no-no, unless you know what you're doing. You also set IP

have your host's IP routing going haywire.

Good observations! I missed seeing both of those when I commented in
my response. (I hang my head in embarrassment.) Both are very
critical no-no's. Both configuration problems should be avoided.

I wonder if those are clues as to why the reporter said that it needed
a cable plugged/unplugged? Because I think that would rotate the
order of the default routes. That might account for the odd behavior.

It shouldn't be needed. I have exactly the same three commands as the OP

~/.xsessionrc would also probably be a suitable place for the commands.
On the other hand the machine is only running a basic window manager,
spectrwm. I do not know how the behaviour changes with complex DEs or
 with screensavers.

Thanks, Brian. I'll try the dpms line in ~/.xsession. My screensaver is

 *
*Tu as d'autres serveurs TFTP disponibles, et tous marchent à peu près
aussi bien pour du boot PXE.*
 **- de telecharger
 */debian/dists/jessie/main/installer-amd64/current/images/netboot/
 *
*Depuis ce dossier, récupère le dossier netboot.tar.gz, et extrais-le dans
 netboot.tar.gz -C /srv/tftp)*
 *

 l'installation depuis cet endroit.

 https://www.debian.org/releases/stable/amd64/ch04s05.html.fr ?

 Bon courage !

Gmrun fallerar

Note all the examples below assume you have sudo enabled (the default if
you left the root password prompts blank during installation) and that
you're logged in as the initial user or another one set up with sudo
privileges.

When I install Debian I enable the login as root option.

Give them a go and post back if they throw up permissions errors.

1. How do I use file manager with root privileges?

The file manager in MATE is 'caja', so...

There are two ways to achieve this:

A) open up a terminal, and type:

sudo caja

After enabling sudo privilege that works (with some warning
messages).

*HOWEVER* it fails when attempting to execute after using su.

or
sudo caja /path/to/required/directory

at the prompt, followed by enter.

OR

B) Install the package 'caja-gksu'

sudo apt-get install caja-gksu

I installed via synaptic - synaptic gave strange messages, will
investigate to see if bug or operator error.

log out and back in, and when you right-click a folder on the desktop or
in the file manager you should see an option to open it as root.

That didn't work.
I could invoke by typing gksu caja and responding with
administrative password when prompted. It also generated warning
messages.

2. How do I manually (no network physically available) reset the clock?

At a terminal:

sudo date MMDDhhmmCCYY

that's MMonth DDay, hhour, mminute, CCentury, YYear

For example, to set the time and date to 15:00 on 1st February 2014:

sudo date 020115002014

That worked - it took effect after a reboot.

See
man date

for further details and options.

Hope this helps.

Bonjour

Bonjour Thierry,

*
*Tu as d'autres serveurs TFTP disponibles, et tous marchent à peu près
aussi bien pour du boot PXE.*
**- de telecharger
*/debian/dists/jessie/main/installer-amd64/current/images/netboot/

*
*Depuis ce dossier, récupère le dossier netboot.tar.gz, et extrais-le
netboot.tar.gz -C /srv/tftp)*

*
contenant l'installeur Debian. Cet image netboot a besoin d'accéder à

l'installation depuis cet endroit.

https://www.debian.org/releases/stable/amd64/ch04s05.html.fr ?

Bon courage !

gent afí als programes convergents o socialistes, gens receptius als
faci, i no quedi tot plegat en no res...

governants tornaran a canviar. Diferent seria poder portar l'assumpte

 significativament.

I això era impensable a l'any 98. Cal
aprofitar-ho!

Si és així, utilitza el controlador VESA a Debian 8 i ja està:

1. Inicia amb l'opció «recovery mode»

2. Introdueix la «root password for maintenance quan t'ho proposi

3. Executa les següents instruccions:
Xorg :1 -configure
cd /etc/X11
cat /root/xorg.conf.new | sed -e 's/nouveau/vesa/g' xorg.conf
reboot

posar acceleració 3D, etc. sempre hi seràs a temps.

Re: a quick fstab questions

2015-06-17 Thread notoneofmyseeds

Bob, thanks for your very informed response, from which I'm learning a lot.

On 06/17/2015 12:10 AM, Bob Proulx wrote:

You haven't really included enough information in the thread yet. You
are mounting an ext4 file system over a USB disk. What, in general,
is on the disk? Is only your own data? Is it the root of an
operating system? This is rather important. If I suggest a recursive
chmod it will destroy an operating system. But if it is only your own
data files, an external $HOME backup for example, then that is fine.
Here's a copy from the initial post that says what I'm trying to do. And
to be more specific: on the disk is just data. It's not the root of an
OS. Now the original post:

Here's what my fstab says:

/ was on /dev/sda1 during installation
UUID=c90b11e8-7021-4a16-a692-8ffa91781753 /   ext4
errors=remount-ro 0   1

# swap was on /dev/sda5 during installation
UUID=d4bfa613-8518-4338-b33c-d08663f5b2f9 noneswap
sw 0 0

/dev/sr0/media/cdrom0 udf,iso9660 user,noauto 0 0

Is this correct? I found it as I'm having trouble mounting an external
usb hard drive now.

And that the USB hard drive is not in the fstab, though mount
produces, which is the drive:
/dev/sdb2: LABEL=300gb UUID=02db0acc-97b3-40b8-b9a1-f6d5fee78e1f
TYPE=ext4

And I went to go add that to my fstab, so perhaps the permission
denied notice I get when I try to use Thunar to mount it would go away.

And after putting this line in fstab, it still won't work:
/dev/sdb2: LABEL=300gb UUID=02db0acc-97b3-40b8-b9a1-f6d5fee78e1f
ext4 -o uid=1000,gid=1000,utf8$

My current fstab concerning the line: /dev/sdb2 /media/a3a3/300gb ext4
rw,user,noauto 0 0

Since ext4 is a full Unix-like file system all files are owned by
users and groups. The file system never stores names. Everything is
stored by number. The first user on a Debian system is usually 1000
by number. You can tell this by looking at the output of the 'id'
command and by listing files in your home with 'ls -l -n'.

I have tried these and have learned from them. Thanks.

If you are the second user then your uid is usually 1001 and the next
1002 and so forth. Transporting files on the file system drive from
one system to another the other system might have different uid
numbers. Let's say you were 1001 on one system but 1000 on a
different system. The numbers would not match. You as uid=1000 would
not have permission to modify uid=1001 files.

Of course root on the system mounting that disk would have
permissions. I tend to never modify backup files. I tend to always
mount backup copies read-only to prevent accidents to the backup. If
the backups had uid=1002 and I needed to recover them to 1001 then I
would copy the files off backup without modifying them. Then in the
recovery area I would modify the new copies to be the right user.

Tools such as cp simply copy files and permissions from the source to
the destination. Tools such as rsync are fancy and try to map uids.
Both tools have options to control this behavior.

   $ cp --help | less
--preserve[=ATTR_LIST]
preserve the specified attributes (default: mode,ownership,time-
stamps), if possible additional attributes: context, links,
   xattr, all
--no-preserve=ATTR_LIST don't preserve the specified attributes

   $ man rsync
   --numeric-ids don't map uid/gid values by user/group name

Additionally rsync has many options for controlling this and various
behavior. See --usermap=STRING, --groupmap=STRING for example.

Let's say I ignore those options for the moment. Let's say I copy
those files from backup to recover them.

   # rsync -av/mnt/path/to/backup /home/foo/restore/

That will probably leave the uids:gids owning the files incorrect.
They will be as on the source mapped through the local /etc/passwd
file mapping. After restoring them they will need to be corrected.

   # chown -R user1:user1 /home/foo/restore

That will recurse (-R) down the /home/foo/restore directory tree and
change the ownership and group of everything to user1:user1.

Since I don't know what is on your usb disk it is hard to give
specific advice. I can only say the above in general terms. Modify
as needed for your situation.
Thanks for your input. I was about to try this last chown command but
thought I'd wait and see if I'm on the right track on that.

Currently this command rsync -av /mnt/media/a3a3/300gb/
/media/a3a3/duopro/New/

Gives this: sent 20 bytes received 12 bytes 64.00 bytes/sec
total size is 0 speedup is 0.00
rsync error: some files/attrs were not transferred (see previous errors)
(code 23) at main.c(1183) [sender=3.1.1]

None of the fixes online have solved the code 23 error.

Thanks!

Press Ctrl-Alt-F1 and see if a login prompt appears. If it does, the
machine is trying to start X and failing. I would try to get X running,
but if you don't want X, you should probably check and see if a DM (such

Richard is probably not going over that now at the speeds he is getting.

You are correct. I've done some spot checks. They all come in at
an ESTIMATE of under 1GB/month. The stingiest data plan locally

It will be expensive if you
go over the limit. Cable or DSL will have drastically higher data caps,

Unlimited wireless exists in theory, but it is still restricted,

And what is coverage like in the USA? Will you not still be tethered to

You're thinking in right direction, but my usage pattern should

Saludos.

Moving from 56k modem

2015-06-17 Thread Richard Owlett

My connectivity for ~3 decades has been at = 56k.
Current ISP abandoning that market ;/

I do not wish DSL, cable, nor satellite as they restrict me to
one physical location.

I was assuming that meant connecting via cell network.
Is that correct?
What questions should I be asking?

Please note that I am strongly text, rather than graphics, oriented.

Comments /or questions I should be asking.

Thank you.

You want Cable or DSL *and* a mobile 3G/4G modem. The wireless thing
will be severely restricted in the the amount of data you can move
through it. Typically 5-6 GBs per month. It will be expensive if you
go over the limit. Cable or DSL will have drastically higher data caps,
and are more reliable generally.

Unlimited wireless exists in theory, but it is still restricted,
typically by throttling.

Re: Problemes amb Debian Jessie

2015-06-17 Thread Daniel
res, tampoc havia funcionat.

Si és així, utilitza el controlador VESA a Debian 8 i ja està:

1. Inicia amb l'opció «recovery mode»

2. Introdueix la «root password for maintenance quan t'ho proposi

3. Executa les següents instruccions:
Xorg :1 -configure
cd /etc/X11
cat /root/xorg.conf.new | sed -e 's/nouveau/vesa/g' xorg.conf
reboot

posar acceleració 3D, etc. sempre hi seràs a temps.

El 17/06/15 a les 15:28, Daniel ha escrit:

Gràcies a tots per l'interés. Al final, i vist que ja em començava a fer
falta l'ordinador, he decidit reinstalar wheezy i veig que funciona.

Ep. És una targeta molt antiga. Pels drivers Nividia i Nvidia-legacy

hauria d'estar pels controladors lliures Nouveau.
