One advantage of the HP Eprint printers (most new inkjet models, don't know about lasers) is you can send print jobs via either HP's Eprint service via email or through Google's Cloud Print from Gmail or Google Docs under Chrome, or from Android. Looking at the whole thread above, it looks like the hplip diagnostic tools aren't being used. 1) Run hp-probe. Does it find the printer? If not, this is a networking issue. I am not able to see the boot menu with this new configuration however - it appears on the video portion of the screen, and I'm able to select a kernel that way, but the serial ouput gets nothing. With Grub v.1 on other machines with serial redirect, I've been able to get the menu. Is there some option that I'm missing? I was working on this a few weeks ago and AFAICK I needed the following in grub.cfg to serial the grub menu over serial: terminal_input serial terminal_output serial Additionally, IIRC, the GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX option above is conditional, meaning that if I want video vs. serial redirection while booting, I need to swap the two 'console' directives. Given that there's only one way I can specify the linux command line option, how would I go about doing this? According to the following bug report (which is also where I saw an example using the two above lines in grub.cfg), concurrent output is coming: http://old.nabble.com/-bug--28628--Concurrent-console-and-serial-access-td27186757.html -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-user-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Grub stage1 not found then Error 2 on reboot
I had a working Lenny install which I somehow hosed while experimenting with Grub. On boot, the message displays 'Grub loading stage 1.5' then 'Error 2'. I did the following to try to fix the problem: 1) I reboot from a GRML rescue CD and attempt to repair grub with grub-install #mount /dev/sda5 /mnt #grub-install --root-directory=/mnt /dev/sda The file /mnt/boot/grub/stage1 not read correctly. stage1 is present at /mnt/boot/grub/stage1 and md5sum shows it is not corrupted. Same for stage2. Device.map: (hd0) /dev/sda 2) I then tried this: # mount -t proc none /mnt/proc # mount -o bind /dev /mnt/dev # chroot /mnt # grub grub find /boot/grub/stage1 (hd0,4) grub root (hd0,4) Filesystem type is ext2fs, partition type 0x83 grub setup (hd0) Checking if /boot/grub/stage1 exists... yes Checking if /boot/grub/stage2 exists... yes Checking if /boot/grub/e2fs_stage1_5 exists... yes Running embed /boot/grub/e2fs_stage1_5 (hd0)... 15 sectors are embedded. succeeded Running install /boot/grub/stage1 (hd0) (hd0)1+15 p (hd0,4)/boot/grub/stage2 /boot/grub/menu.lst... succeeded Done. This looks good but on reboot I still get Grub Error 2. Question: According to the Grub Manual, Error 2 means this: Bad file or directory type - This error is returned if a file requested is not a regular file, but something like a symbolic link, directory, or FIFO. The above shows that when /proc and /dev are manually mounted and grub is run from a chroot, Grub can find stage1 and stage2 but when booting Grub somehow does not read them as regular files.
