Problems with Gnome2

2003-03-07 Thread Chris Hoover
Hi,

I finally have gotten a clean install of gnome2 for my unstable dist laptop, and I'm
having some strange problems with gnome2 and was wondering if anyone else is having
them

1. I have a 1.7 Ghz p4m laptop with 512megs mem. However, gnome feels extreamly
sluggish. An example of this would be working in one terminal for an extended period
of time and then try to highlight the 5 desktop icons. It will take a noticable
amount of time for the icons to be highlighted, and there will be no shadow box
appearing showing that area of the desktop I'm trying to highlight. However, if I
immediatly try to do the same thing, it appears to work fine and the performance is
much better. I am noticing this in several places doing different things.

2. When I try to launch gnome stuff from the menu or from a launcher icon and there
is the afore mentioned sluggishness, it causes xmms to pause for a brief period of
time.

I have had top running during the problems, but there is never a load on my machine.
I am hoping that these are problems with gnome or the packaging that will be fixed and
not a standard feature. It seems that gnome should just fly on a machine like mine
since I have both the memory and the horsepower.

Any ideas, thoughts, comments would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Chris

Problems with X and unstable

2003-03-02 Thread Chris Hoover
I am in need of some help. It appears that the X packages in the unstable
distribution where updated and now I can not get into X. I am attaching the log from
trying to run a startx to show what the problem is.

Before this happened on Friday, I was running X without a problem on my Dell Inspiron
8200. Any ideas on what has changed would greatly be appreciated.

Thanks,

Chris

Thanks, that fix worked. However, is this not a bug with the latest unstable
packaging? I mean, my X config was working perfect, X packages updated and then my X
is broken???

If this is a bug as I think, how do I properly report it?

Package Depedency Problems/Conficts

2003-02-18 Thread Chris Hoover
Please forgive if this is not the proper forum for this posting, but I'm
not exactly sure where it should go.
There is a dependency problem with wterm. I just tried to install it on
my laptop that is running debian unstable with WindowMaker as my
windowmanager. However an apt-get install wterm comes back saying that
it wants to remove libwraster2 wmaker wmakerconf!

How can this be seeing as wterm is a terminal emulator designed for
windowmaker?

Any help on how to get the two working together, or who to pass this on
to would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Chris

Is it possible to get different versions to work under different install
directories (this would be IDEAL!)? Would you be willing to give me some
pointers?

Okay: from somewhere deep down in my memory:
- Get a IE5 complete setup from somewhere (I got it of the Office2000
CD's).
- run 'wine DCOM98.EXE' (can be found on MS site somewhere)
- run 'wine WINSOCK2.EXE' (can also be found on MS site somewhere)
- run 'wine IE5SETUP.EXE' and select the typical installation

Wine will crash a couple of times, but just keep repeating the last step
until it's finally installed. After that, I even ended up with a nice
little shortcut on my desktop to IE (with nautilus that is).

After that, it's possible to upgrade to IE6. Installing IE6 from scratch
is not possible (at least I haven't found out how yet), it gives you an
error that it needs at least win98.

And, like some other user mentioned here, your fonts will look ugly, but
there might be some tweaking possible. I just did it to show someone you
can run (some) win32 programs with linux.

Have fun!

PS: check also appdb.codeweavers.com.. You will find a lot of usefull
tips there (and also a lot of outdated ones).

Just go to codeweavers.com and purchase a copy of crossover office.
This is a version of wine that will run IE, Quicken, Office 2000, etc
on linux. It is the same code base as wine, just more advanced.
Definetly worth the money and will probably be perfect for you.

Help with Coldfusion Server

2003-02-03 Thread Chris Hoover
Hello Everyone,

I'm trying to get Coldfusion server version 5 to install on my debian system

Problems running Gnome

2003-01-25 Thread Chris Hoover
Hello Everyone,

I am having some problems running Gnome. I have just built my new Dell
Inspiron 8200 laptop with Debian 3.0 and used the unstable tree for the
install of packages. I know that the unstable tree is a moving target,
but it has several things that I wanted (such as gnome 2).

Well, when I try to launch gnome using gdm, I get the following error in
a popup window:

---
There was an error starting the GNOME Setting Daemon.

Some things, such as themes, sounds, or background settings may not work
correctly.

The Settings Daemon restarted too many times.

The Last error message was:

Failed to activate 'OAFIID:GNOME_SettingsDaemon'

GNOME will still try to restart the Settings Daemon next time you log in.

-

When I click ok, I only get the desktop icons. I do not get the panel
or anything else. I am able to left and middle click on the background
to get the two associated menus.

Does anyone know what is going on and what I need to do to fix it and
get a working version of gnome2?

Thanks

Chris

Well it depends on want you want. If you want just to mirror a few known
packages, the rsync command is enough. Tell what packages you want and
anyone can show you the correct syntax. If you want to mirror a
distribution you need to get a partial mirror script. A search on the
debian-cd list will give you severals or have a look at
http://www.problemlos.ch/~otti/;. If you want to build a full debian
mirror, go to the mirror page of debian.org.

sends out mail via the proper account name (or give me the option of

are there any other ideas on how to handle this (preferably w/o using

Major Network Issues

2000-07-01 Thread Chris HOOVER
I'm having major network problems since switching to
my
new ISP (road runner). I know that the problem is on
my
side and need some help figuring out what is wrong and
how to fix it.

Problem 1: I am unable to ping/connect any of my
isp's
servers (pop/smtp/nntp/etc) from any box on my network
other than my ipmasq box. Of course, the ipmasq box
has
the nic for the rr cable modem in it.

Problem 2: Due to problem 1, I can't send e-mail from
my lan. I'm using exim. I tried on a reconfig to
set the smart host smtp server to the ip address of
the
smtp server of rr. However, when I tried to send a
test message,
I recieved the following error: lookup of host
24.93.67.176
failed in smarthost router.

Problem 3: I'm running dhcp for my internal network.
How can I get machines that are given dhcp address to
be
dns-able for my lan (not worried about being able to
see
them from the internet).

Please let me know any specific information you might
need to help diagnose and solve this problem, and I
will
try to provide it.

Yes, debian-server is in the /etc/resolv.conf of the other machines. In fact,
it is given as the only name server.

Yes it appears to be working fine. Here is it's output.

Yes. Here is what I did (showing only relevent part):

I have since rebooted the box.

Be aware that for such as pop and smtp hosts you should use FQDN's; stuff
like mail and news might not work.

They gave me the following names for use when on their network:
pop-server, smtp-server, nntp-server. When I need to connect to the mail
server from a non-rr site, I have an FQDN. Also, I can connect to the pop
server using that.

Finally, I forgot to mention that debian-server is running dhcp for my internal
network. However, both debian-server and debian-wall have static ip's (don't
use dhcp for internal net).

Road Runner DNS Problems

2000-06-10 Thread Chris Hoover
I'm having some problems with my Road Runner Cable modem and getting the DNS to
properly work. Hopefully, someone can help me get this straight.

Here is my current setup:

internet
  |
  |
debian-wall (Firewall box)
  |
  |
Hub---(debian-server - DNS server for the network)
  |
  |
  (Multiple PC's)

The problem I'm having is that I'm unable to access pop/smtp/nntp servers that
Road runner provides from anywhere on my network except debian-wall. Road
Runner is using dhcp to assign me the ip-addr and I have that working. I also
have ipmasq working so all of my networked machines can get in and out to the
internet.

I did directly connect my windows box to the cable modem and looked at the dhcp
address. I then added what it said where the dns servers to the named.conf
file on debian-server, but still no help.

Can someone help me resolve this problem?

I've come up with a couple possible solutions:

1. Run DNS on debian-wall. This is possible, but I really don't want any
extranous programs running on that box to help prevent holes as I setup my
firewall.

2. Get debian-wall to update the dns on debian-server. I have no idea if this
is even possible, much less how to implement it.

Other/better ideas?

Thanks for any and all help,

Chris Hoover

dhcp cable modem (somewhat urgent)

I'm in need of a little help. Tomorrow the cable company is coming to hook up

Question: How do you get the dhcp client on my firewall computer to grab the

I'm looking for information on setting up a dhcp server. Does anyone know if a
howto or something like that exists? I went to linuxdoc.org and did not see
one, but it might be named something else.

TIA,

chris

Outlook Type email/pim

2000-02-23 Thread Chris Hoover
I don't want to cause a flame war or be called a heretic, but after using
Microsoft outlook at my new job, I have found I really like some of it's
features. I especially like the tight integration it has with all of the
features (mail, calander, etc.).

Is there an equivelent email type client available for linux?

TIA,

chris

HELP - Screwed Up Package Listings

2000-02-13 Thread Chris Hoover
HELP - I've royally screwed up my dselect package listing. I was working in
dselect to get rid of packages that I never use on my server (games, xemacs,
etc) and had a finger slip that removed a required package and exited to the
menu. Now almost every package is set to remove. How can I get the packages
list rebuilt?

If this has to be done manually, is there a way to force apt/dselect to
downgrade to slink (the slink cd is in the cd changer on the machine and the
machine is currently running potato)?

TIA,

chris

Re: Slink - Frozen = No Internet

2000-02-12 Thread Chris Hoover
There is nothing in the /var/lock after a clean reboot. Also, if I drop back
to the old 2.0.36 kernel, the problem clears. This is very perplexing since my
other 3 linux boxes are all running the same type of setup (potato/2.2.14).

Any other ideas?

Did you check for a stale lock in /var/lock/ ? If there's one, rm it and
 retry.

slink diald problems

2000-01-25 Thread Chris Hoover
Can someone help me with a diald problem?

I have a full slink install on my server and was trying to get diald setup on
it. I have setup the diald.options file to connect using the pon method. It
seems to connect fine, but hangs on makeing the link.

Ive attached a syslog output of diald and my diald.options. Can someone help
me get this to work. This machine is still running a 2.0.36 kernel.

Thanks,

chris

vmware

1999-07-10 Thread Chris Hoover
I'm starting to use vmware, and I love it. However, I can only get 16 colors

I'm running it on an amd k6-2 300 with a creative labs RIVATNT card (which it
does not seem to see). It tells me that I have a Standard Display Adapter

win98 and samba

under win95.

Samba Problems

1999-05-31 Thread Chris Hoover
I've had samba working on my network, allowing my nt box to see my unix home
directories. However, I had to reorganize my NT box (server) and ended up
reinstalling to free up a hd. When I did this, I changed the domain from
PRI_NT_DOMAIN to WINDOWS. I changed the appropriate line in the /etc/smb.conf,
but I'm unable to connect from winnt. I get the following error when I try:
\\Debian2 is not accessible. Network path not found.

Does anyone know how to fix this, and/or what it means? It seems to make no
since since debian2 is showing up in the neighorhood network.

KDE mail client problems

1999-05-28 Thread Chris Hoover
I'm having problems getting KDE's mail client to delete mail that are in
folders. I currently have my system set up to sort my mail using exim's

~/Mail dir.

KDE see's the files with the mail fine, and I'm able to read the mail, and
supposedly delete the mail. However, when I close the mail client, and restart
it, the mail is still there. So does anyone know how to make the mail client
really delete the mail?

Sound Card Config/Kernel Compile Problems

1999-05-24 Thread Chris Hoover
I'm having some problems with my yamaha pci sound card that I just installed.
After reading the kernel documentation, I compiled in every thing it said to
for the olp3-sa stuff. However, on the reboot of my system, it looks like some
of the sound card parameters are wrong, and I'm not sure what they should be.

Here is what the kernel said:

OSS: OPL3-SA chip not found
Found OPL3-SAx (YMF719)
MSS: I/O port conflict
Sound initialization complete

Alright, the kernel found my card and called thinks it's a YMF719, although it
really is a YMF724E-V. Anyway, how can I tell what the MSS i/o port should be?

Setting Up Netscape Mail

1999-05-01 Thread Chris Hoover
I guess I'm going to have to use the mail program in Netscape, since I can't
find any other descent X mail programs. However, I'm not sure how to set it
up. I have exim filters running that are sorting all of my mail into the
appropriate folders. I've set it up so that no mail should be left in the
/var/spool/mail folders. So, do I need to still tell Netscape to use the
movemail program? If so, what is the best way to set it up. If not, what
should I tell the system to use for the incoming mail?

Thanks,

Chris

Exim Filter

1999-04-27 Thread Chris Hoover
Hello all,

I'm working on setting up my exim filter to filter all my mail and have run
into a couple of questions for which I have not found an answer.

1. Is it possible to have the filter check all incoming fields w/o
specifically spelling them out? (something similar to procmails ^TO)

2. How can I have exim dump any mail that passes through all my filters into a
special misc folder? I don't want any mail to end up in my
/var/spool/mail/user file.

Thanks,

Chris

First off, let me say thanks to those of you who replied to my other posting
about my mail system being hosed. I ended up having to reinstall since it
looked more an more like the first install did not go well. After that I
applied what you guys said and I now have a working email system.

However, there is still one kink. When I just tried to email myself, it was
bounced back by exim. How can I prevent this? Below is the bouned email
message.

Thanks,

chris

Windows NT Samba

1999-04-11 Thread Chris Hoover
I was wondering if it was possible to use samba and have my linux box be able
to read/write on my NT box. I would like to do this since my NT box has more
hd space right now, and I'm in need of a place to store my mp3's.

2 Questions

1999-04-11 Thread Chris Hoover
I have two hopefully quick questions.

1. How can I get my machine to automatically start fetchmail after a reboot?
Also, how do I have it ran by a user other than root (it is only setup to run
as me right now)?

2. Is there a way to script the startup of a remote program? I want to have
wmmon and wmppp start up every time I log into my machine. However they are
located on my other linux box.

Thanks,

Chris

Printing from Netscape

1999-04-11 Thread Chris Hoover

I'm having problems printing from Netscape. When I try to print, all I get is
either a blank page or
a page that has the following printed on it:
Error: /invalidfont in findfont
  Operand stack:
   F0 Times-Roman
Font Times

I'm trying to print to a remote printer running on another linux box. Printing
from other sources like
xemacs, mail, command line lp commnds, etc. work fine. Also, printing via
samba from my NT box
works fine.

Any ideas why this is happening? This is the same sort of error I was getting
when I was trying to
use true type fonts. However, since then, I have done a clean install of slink
from cd, and am not
using the true type fonts.

How do I fix this?

Thanks,

chris

Mail system all f*cked up

1999-04-10 Thread Chris Hoover
Well, after doing a clean install of Slink from cd's, it appears that the mail
system is not working. Last night, I did a clean install of slink, and setup
fetchmail and exim and tested them. Fetchmail pulled down my mail, and
eventually exim delivered it (over an hour later).

Well, today I ran them for real (told fetchmail to fetchall instead of keep).
Fetchmail worked fine, but the mail has never been delivered. I can see it
sitting in my /var/spool/exim/incoming dir, but exim won't deliver it. Now it
has been close to 3 hours since the initial run.

Also, I went to send this message out from tkrat and was given this error: 550
relaying to debian-user@lists.debian.org prohibited by administrator.

What the hell is going on, and how do I fix it. I desperatily need to get my
e-mail system working again.

Thanks,

Chris

P.S.

I'm attaching my /etc/exim.conf

Have you tried the command 'exim -bt -M mail-id-number' ?
To get these numbers, do a 'exim -bp'

Also, do 'ps ax' and find out from the exim entry how often Exim is delivering
mail.

Slink mail

I just did a minor upgrade of my system to slink (I had done a major
upgrade before it was officially released), and am now having problems

taking up all of my processor (causing loads 2 or 3). Does anyone

perfectly until I did that minor upgrade yesturday (and I'm not sure
what all was upgraded).

CD-R/RW Question

1999-03-24 Thread Chris Hoover
I'm looking at purchasing a cd-r /cd-rw in the near future, and was looking for
some advice as to what to purchase. My main linux box has both ide and scsi in
it, so I can go either way. I was wondering if there were advantages to going
either with scsi or ide. I'm looking more at ease of operating and installing
under linux, not the inherent advantages/disadvantages of ide vs scsi.

Also, does linux handle the cd-rw's? If so, are they worth the extra money to
get?

diald and ip address

it did not work.

Is there another file I can modify so it will do this?

tkrat problems

1999-02-21 Thread Chris Hoover
I'm trying to get tkrat (and the rest of my mail system) setup for
mail. Right now I'm using netscape mail, and really want to quit using
it.

Anyway, my email address is [EMAIL PROTECTED] and my linux login in
choover. I've setup fetchmail to pull down my mail, and that seems to
be working. However, when I try to send mail with tkrat, I get the
following error:
550 '[EMAIL PROTECTED]' wax_man@(nodomain) not matched:

Does anyone know how to fix this error?

I've tried adding [EMAIL PROTECTED] to the Use from address: field
under the sending preferences. I've put bellsouth.net in the
Masquerade host as: field on the same screen, and put bellsouth.net in
the Domain: field. None of these have fixed the problem.

why, but something with the changer). Anyway, this is not the first

Anyway, I sync'd and unmounted my drives (with the sysrq stuff), and the
system rebooted. Now, wmmount is segfaulting, x11amp won't run, fonts
seem to be missing etc.

Any idea on what to look for or what the problem might be? There is

Jeremy,

I have the exact same card, and can say that it performs beautifully
under linux. As someone else has already stated, the default XF86_SVGA
server does not support it in debian. However, you can get the new
3.3.3 version or go to http://www.d128.com/ and get the version for
3.3.2.

Verifying backup

Setting up diald.

I'm having to reset up my system after a hard drive crash, and am having

remember when I first set it up, I was directed to a good page on the
web where someone detailed how they set it up. Does anyone know where
that page or one like it might be?

Don't know the specifics about your card and it's drivers. But, when I
run two 3Com 3c509's, I have to add the following line to my lilo.conf
so it will see both cards: append=ether=3,0x210,eth1 (irq, mem, ethX).

If you know that information, you might add it, and see if that helps.

To configure it you would just use ifconfig. Look in the
/etc/init.d/network file, and see how you are ifconfing'n the first
card, and duplicate for the second.

Tape Backup And Block Size

1999-01-18 Thread Chris Hoover
Does anyone know how to find out what the proper block size is for a tape
drive? I have an Exabyte 8200 scsi tape drive (8mm 2.5 gig), that I bought
used with no documentation. I've looked at the exabyte home page, but did not
see any mention of block size.

I've tried to backup with dump, but it is not getting the right block size.
This is causing it to tell me I need multiple tapes when everything should fit
on one.

I've been working on this for a while, and haven't gotten it right yet. And to
make matters worse, I lost my 5.1 gig maxtor about 2 weeks ago w/o a good
backup. So I really want to get this figured out to prevent any more
catastrophic data loss.

Thanks,

Chris

Samba Questions

1998-10-10 Thread Chris Hoover
I have a question about samba and it's capabilities.

I have two systems on a network in my house. One I use as a
production server which has my connection to the internet, and then my

play machine. The play machine is a dual boot between linux and win95.

Anyway, I'm in need of more space for win95, and wanted to put the drive

in my production server. But, I don't really want to format the drive
as a vfat drive. Can samba serve the drive
to win95 if it is an ext2 partition? Also are there any limitations or
problems doing this (i.e. read only)?

Thanks,

Chris

 Things to check:

 - is your .xinitrc executable as .xsession should be?
 - do you get any clues written in ~/.xsession-errors?
 - do you have a line 'allow-user-xsession' in /etc/X11/config?

Naming machines on network.

1998-09-19 Thread Chris Hoover
I need some advise on how to name the machines on my network. Here is
the current setup:

internet---machine1---hubmachine2

My isp has given me a name of ci1000135-a.grnvle1.sc.home.com with a
static ip.
I also have aquired the name choover.ml.org for the same ip.

Is it possible for a machine to have more than one name (i.e. I'd like
to know machine 1 as waxman.choover.ml.org). Also, what should I name
machine2 (I'd like tux.choover.ml.org). I'm using ip masq. on machine 1
to hide my network which consists of private ip's (192.168.1.1
192.168.1.2).

So far, everything is working as far as internet access from both
machines. However machine 2's mail is screwed up, and from comments an
a previous question, it looks like a naming issue.

Also, is it possible for me to set up the network where I can access
either machine from the internet?

TIA,

Chris

Re: cable-modem woes (TCI/@HOME)

1998-09-18 Thread Chris Hoover
Stuart:

I also have a cable modem with @HOME. They are relativley easy to get
working.
Set the ip of the nic they gave you to 24.1.106.xxx. Then set the netmask to
255.255.255.0. The gateway is 24.1.106.1. Then use the DNS servers they gave
you.
They should have given you a name for your machine (mine is
ci1000135-a.grnvle1.sc.home.com) . Your HOSTNAME = the first part (ci1000135-a
in my
case). In /etc/resolv.conf add the line search = grnvle1.sc.home.com -
substitute
the grnvle1.sc.home.com for what ever yours is. Then add nameserver
24.1.64.zzz.
You can have as many name servers as you need, but only 1 per line.

Make sure your kernel is compiled with support for your card (it appears that
it
is). If this does not make it work, you might need to compile ip-forwarding
into
your kernel. Also, make sure that you setup ipfwadm with firewall rules, since
you
have a static IP.

Best of luck,

Chris

 Subject: cable-modem woes (TCI/@HOME)

 Hi,

I am having trouble getting my cable-modem working and I am wondering
if somebody out there knows the right way. Here is the info:

 - works in win98
 - looks like a subnet of a class A network (this could be my problem)
 - ip address is 24.1.106.xxx (xxx not shown)
 - netmask from provider is 255.255.240.0
 - gateway is 24.1.104.1
 - dns server is 24.1.64.zzz
 - domain set in resolv.conf

I am really unsure about the network address I should use.
From the HOWTO's it looks like I should use 24.1.96.0 since
the is the result of ANDing the ip address and netmask.
I tried lots of things but none seem to work. Win98 only
asks for ip address and netmask -- I guess it figures out the
network address. I also don't know if I should try a broadcast
 address either.

I can bring eth0 up with no errors and set the routing but I
 can't connect to anything.

Any ideas? Am I doing something stupid?

 thanks very much,

 Stuart

Problems with Mail

1998-09-18 Thread Chris Hoover
I'm having some preplexing mail problems, and was wondering if someone
could help me resolve the problem.

I have 2 linux boxes networked together. My production box also has
the connection to the internet. It is running all of my servers, and
pulling mail down from my isp with fetchmail. I'm wanting to be able to
d/l my mail from my production box to my development box, but am not
able to get it to work.

My first attempt was to use fetchmail. It seemed to pull the mail down,
but it never showed up in my /var/spool/mail/user file. After
examining the system, it appears that is is stuck in
/var/spool/smail/incoming. Does anyone have any idea why smail is not
delivering it?

My temp solution is to use netscape mail program to d/l the mail to my
development box. But I really don't want to be stuck with this as the
solution.

BTW, I really don't want to directly d/l the mail to my development box,
since I can't reach it from outside my house (it's on a private network,
using ipmasq to get out).

Ideas?

Thanks,

Chris
