Re: Maintaining multiple Debian boxes
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE- Hi, I have a few idea that might work for you. I have not tested it, so I can't guarentee a thing. Exekuting dpkg --get-selections will give you all the package selectinons on a machine. Piping that into dpkg --set-selections on an other machine will set the selections there. You could the invoke the dpkg-ftp scripts for example to preform the actual retrival of the new packages, and then the adding, uppdatin and romaval could be done with a few dpkg calls. If all this where to be done regually, as cron jobs, the procedure would only need attention for packages asking questions in there setup scripts. A maby easier way would be to have a central disk nfs mountet by all your clients, and then have a cron job on the clients installing all packages found in that directory. But that would not give you any way to purge packages. As for packages asking questions it should not be to hard to construct som kind of databse containing what to awnser to which question, and the run the instalation process through a perl script that look up the questions in the db and awnsers the quiestions. - -- Name: Hakan Ardo E-Mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] WWW:http://www.ub2.lu.se/~hakan/sig.html Public Key: Try finger [EMAIL PROTECTED] Interests: WWW, Programming, 3D graphics Thought for the day: As long as one understands, the spelling does not matter :-) - -- -BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE- Version: 2.6.3i Charset: noconv iQCVAwUBMtLsO96dx9igIm71AQExzwQA3L49y+sfIdLI+37ouHoDP4FxiuBa5Qmb 5LZAzZ5CvAQgprXy//ZCMv6YMuGf0g3Hk8kWPkYJ7GrfxiMczHMJPKdS423tIsWk sYmZ/uEgu9c5LZ2QLK8ImX8iJMTDjgSr1rC5XcbS7ERPD00JHOmLBvKfTLSXw/KS KUJFw1xDkJI= =CFzV -END PGP SIGNATURE- -- TO UNSUBSCRIBE FROM THIS MAILING LIST: e-mail the word unsubscribe to [EMAIL PROTECTED] . Re: HELP for network setup
I'm recently instaling Debian 1.1. from CD-ROM. I made X11 window works. Everything seems fine and I like it except that I can not make networking up. Here is my situation: I have a office-wide LAN with a hub. Currently A freeBSD and Sun workstation are communicating through hub very well. So I don't have the direct access to Internet, but I do registered my domain name as newsham.com. I do have a PPP account (with static IP 205.198.193.254) provided by the local ISP. I have NE2000 Ethernet card installed. I am using following IP numbers for my machines 192.168.3.1 ultralean.newsham.com # Sun station 192.168.3.2 supanee.newsham.com # freeBSD 192.168.3.4 xlean.newsham.com # Linux (Debian 1.1) All this IP number are not registered, they only work locally. How can I configure the network and make PPP work under Debian. Well, if you are planing to allow all three mchines to access the internett, throgh the PPP account you must either get a full domain connection from your ISP, or install a firewall on your linux system foling your ISP that there is only one machine with the IP number. If you chose the first version you'll probably have to change your local IP numbers. I guess the netmask is 255.255.255.0. Then what is the IP adddress of my network? what is the broadcastaddress to use on my network? what is the IP address of the default gateway system you should route to, if I do not have a gateway? In any case you have to configure your linux machine as a router. Which meens that it needs two IP numbers, two networkaddresses, two broadcastaddress, one for the eth0 interface and one for the ppp interface. What values to use for the PPP interface should have been provided to you by your ISP, and what to use for your eth0 interface is the same as for the rest of the machines. I would guess something like: eth0 IP=192.168.3.4 NETMASK=255.255.255.0 NETWORK=192.168.3.0 BROAKAST=192.168.3.255 PPP IP=205.198.193.254 NETMASK=255.255.255.0 NETWORK=205.198.193.0 BROAKAST=205.198.193.255 The default gateway for your linux box should be the machine at the other end of the PPP connection, but make sure to add separate routes four your local network. And if you decided to let the rest of the machines out, there default gateway should be the linux machine. You should in any case register your office IP numbers, you see, the linux machine will have no way of deciding where the send the data if there excists machines with the same IP number both on the local network and across the PPP line. Please help. I am almost desperated with Linux (I spent 3 days to install Slackware96, but Slackware96 is very buggy). Thanks in advance for any help. If you have a little time this evening and you willing to help me on networking, give me your phone number (international number is fine) I will phone you. Well, the time is 09:30 right now here in sweeden. I am just about to leave, for class and I'll be home again around 17, 18 a'clock (local time). You'll probably be able to reach me by EMail during that time, otherwise feel free to phone me before 23:00. My number is +46 46 130188.

Re: a4.sty and a4wide.sty
Hi Hakan -- You asked: I have latex 2e-7 installed, but I can't find a4.sty a4wide.sty, in which package are they? I think the Latex-2e approach is not to use .sty files, but to use .cls (class) files. Support for a4 letter paper is built into the article.cls file, for example, but the option a4paper. So, to get output formatted for a4 paper, you would invoke the article style this way: \documentclass[titlepage, oneside, a4paper, 11pt]{article} \usepackage{html} \usepackage[dvips]{graphicx} where the options titlepage, oneside, 11pt, etc., are all optional (!); I just put them there to illustrate that you can have more than 1 option in the []. The READMEFIRST file in /usr/doc/lilo gives two possible fixes: - In linux you can remove lilo from the master boot record with: lilo -U - In MSDOS you can remove lilo by: fdisk /mbr The lilo -U fix did not work for me since I had already re-partitioned. fdisk /mbr was successful. The same goes for me. I successfully uninstalled lilo with fdisk /mbr, but when I reinstalled it I was back where I started. But now at least I can boot my system in msdos mode and the turn to linux with loadlin, and I can live with that setup, even if I found LILO interface smooter. And thanx again for all your grate support. Thanx to you I once again have a usable system. Mike On Wed, 14 Aug 1996, Joshua Stockwell wrote: I had this exact same setup. Slackware on the slave disk and msdos on the other master disk. And I just recently upgraded to Debian and ran into the exact same problem. Silly me to forget to uninstall lilo first! The reason your boot is hanging is that it is looking for the old lilo that doesnt't exist anymore. You need to re-install lilo. If your lilo.conf is setup right just type lilo and it should re-write the MBR so you'll be able to boot normally. Lilo should be on your linux partition, not your dos partition. Good luck! - Josh Stockwell Hakan wrote: I have a 486 on which I untill recently had MSDos and Slackware installed on two diffrent harddisks, with LILO installed in the master boot block of t he msdos harddisk allowing me to select between the two operating systems. I had to install LILO by hand because the instalation package tried to inst all it on the linx partion, which is the second partion on the secon harddisk (/dev/hdb2). I placed it on (/dev/hda). Then I rebootet. Then insted of t he LILO text that is supposed to show up when LILO loads I only got L foll owd by 04 repeated in what seemsed to infinity. I have tried bothe my old Slackware lilo configuration file, the new crea ted by Debian. I have tried both the lilo version that came with Debian and t he old one used by Slackware. I have tried having both the MSDos hd and the Linux HD as the first HD. And Gud knows what else, but the result is just the s ame. What am I doing wrong? I have temporarity solved the problem by using a MSDos boot disk with a m enu that allows me to either run the startup files from my HD after load MSDO S from the floppy, or execute loadlin to load a linux kernerel from my msdo s HD and mount the root system. And this works acceptable. But it is not a dec ent solution. And since LILO worked with Slackware, I see no reason for it no t to work with Debian. Any sugestions will be appricialed. Thanx.
lyx and fonts
Hi, I'm trying to use lyx, and it works fine untill it invokes latex. Then it seems to be using some fonts that I have not installed. Where can I find those fonts (listed below)? Acording to /usr/doc/lyx/debian.README.gz, ther should also excist * several manpages, of which I can find non. I am using the 0.9.21-1 vesrion from the stable directory, butI have also tried the unstable 0.10.3.1 without success. LILO trouble
Hi, I have a 486 on which I untill recently had MSDos and Slackware installed on two diffrent harddisks, with LILO installed in the master boot block of the msdos harddisk allowing me to select between the two operating systems. I have tried bothe my old Slackware lilo configuration file, the new created by Debian. I have tried both the lilo version that came with Debian and the old one used by Slackware. I have tried having both the MSDos hd and the Linux HD as the first HD. And Gud knows what else, but the result is just the same. What am I doing wrong? X11 on a protable ttf screen
I am planing to install Debian (including X11) on a portable computer with a so called ttf screen. And I have heard that that requiers a special XFree86 server. My question is simply dose there excist such a server? And where can I in that case find it? Once again thanx for a great distrobution and your graet support. -- -- Name: Hakan Ardo E-Mail:[EMAIL PROTECTED] WWW: HTTP://www.ub2.lu.se/~hakan/sig.html Interests: WWW, Programming, 3D graphics Thought for the day: As long as one understands, the spelling does not matter :-) --
