If this is the case, getting packages from the new 2.0 is not as easy as just installing them. You'll need to go through a special step of upgrading your system to libc6. This is because between 1.3 and 2.0, the major version of the C library changed. We migrated to libc6. Unfortunately, there is no way to upgrade cleanly using existing (1.3) tools. What you need to do is either use autoup.sh script or apt.deb package. Autop.sh is just a script that performs necessary upgrades for you in the right order. apt-get (from apt.deb) is the backend of next-generation package selection tool, a dselect replacement. Either of the methods are documented to work well. At this point, it is a matter of choice. Both autoup.sh and apt.deb as well as upgrade instructions can be had from debian/dists/stable/upgrade-i386 on any debian mirror. You can create a partition table from scratch if you knew the exact geometry using linux fdisk. I am not sure if you can do this without knowing it at all. A couple of weeks ago, i read about a program to scan the disks for superblocks to try to solve these problems. Does anyone recall what/where it is? All of uu.net about to be banned.
In the last 3 weeks, the debian lists and their subscribers have been attacked by spammer(s) from uu.net. Since the time I started handling spam for Debian, uu.net comprised about one third of the spam that Debian has gotten, but lately it has been darn close to 100%. This is too much, IMO, and I believe a block of all incoming mail going through debian.org servers is necessary. It will be implemented shortly. I understand that uu.net is a huge provider. and many large ISP's use their pop's (dial-in locations) for their service. You have to understand that I am only blocking mail sent directly from uu.net dynamic IP addresses and stuff sent through relay*.uu.net. Relay*.uu.net is being blocked because way too much spam is going through those servers from the same uu.net spammers that sometimes inject spam directly. This block only affects you if you are using uu.net dial-in (your dynamic IP resolves to something.uu.net), _and_ you configured your mail software to send out mail directly instead of forwarding everything to a smarthost (your provider's mail server). The block also affects you if you use relay*.uu.net servers as your smarthost. I understand this is not the case for almost anyone. If you are one of those affected, you'll have to change your configuration to forward all mail through your provider's smarthost, or change providers. Remember, this only affects mail you send _to_ the lists, or any of the debian.org addresses, but does not affect the mail that you receive _from_ debian lists. Please contact me if you have any questions, and sorry for the inconvenience. Igor -- Proudly running Debian Linux! Re: where is it?
Now that two people gave the same advice, I'm going to dissent. The instructions in install.txt are adequate if you have Debian on CDROM. Not if you download to disk yourself. I downloaded what I believed was an accurate copy of ftp.cdrom.com:/pub/linux/debian/bo onto a spare hard drive and mounted it on the machine being installed. But I could never find an answer that would satisfy the ambiguous prompt that wants to know where to find the Debian distribution already mounted. (Is there a missing top level directory? What's its name?) You probably should have entered debian/bo/disks-i386/current. The script jusst looks for a directory that contains all the files needed for the initial setup, and they all come from disks-i386 I installed from CD ROM later with no problems. Install.txt glosses over this, I suppose because most people are installing from the CD or over the network. I don't know how to fix it or I would have sent in a patch. For now, we shouldn't be telling newcomers to Linux that install.txt is all the info they'll need to install Debian. The ones who try to download it may be disappointed. Well, install.txt has its shortcomings, and that's why I have taken over the maintenance of it. However, I haven't done work on it yet, because I was told the new bootdisks are completely redone, and I decided to wait for their release. Of course, this means that the bo install.txt will never get improved, but I don't see much sense in doing it at this point. -- Proudly running Debian Linux! debian-user FAQ: your help is needed!
Greetings all! I've set up a framework for debian-user FAQ using FAQ-O-Matic by Jon Howell. Faq-o-matic allows maintaining a FAQ using web interface. I hope this FAQ will become one of the best and most thorough databases of linux info on the net. This requires most of us to contribute however. At this point, I am looking for moderators for each section (see below). I am also looking for feedback regarding the setup. I am sure some categories need to be added, and the color scheme is probably not the best, but I am not sure which is better. Anyone who wants to customize the color scheme of faqomatic should contact me. The way I set it up for debian-user FAQ is for every section (category) to have a maintainer who would be the only one allowed to modify the items in the section. Under every section, there is a world-writable submit your answers section where users can post their submissions, and the maintainer would later move it. To sum up, the responsibility of the section moderator/maintainer is to make sure his section is up-to-date, add answers based on the threads in debian-user, and manage the user-submitted answers and feedback. Please contact me if you'd like to help. Thanks! P.S. the FAQ is at http://www.debian.org/cgi-bin/fom almost forgot :-) -- Proudly running Debian Linux! Re: 3FA: ???
Run liloconfig, and answer the questions it asks you appropriately. Is this the right program? all three questions are yes/no types, rather than allowing me to change them. It wants to use /dev/hda3, /, for boot, and has no option to change to /dev/hda1. I took a look at it, and it indeed assumes that if you want to boot off linux partition, then you want it to be /. You may want to submit a bug against lilo. Your only option is to edit /etc/lilo.conf and make it something like this: boot=/dev/hda root=/dev/hda3 install=/boot/boot.b read-only image=/boot/vmlinuz label=linux Then you should run lilo and reboot Note that this will install lilo into MBR. If you don't want to do that, and want to leave the debian mbr block in there (the thing that produces 123FA at times), you can take a look at /usr/sbin/liloconfig (perl script) and see the weird ways it handles it :-). Also, see /usr/doc/mbr. However, I don't see a reason debian does this anyway, I was once told that the reason is because mbr is safer than lilo. -- Proudly running Debian Linux! In no case do you have to download the packages onto a non-Debian partition. dselect can automatically grab the packages you need on-the-fly via PPP, Ethernet, Token Ring, or whatever network system you have. There is no need to download them beforehand; in fact, doing so will probably be much more difficult. I was under the impression that the base install doesn't come with full PPP support (it says this during installation). After the base install (from floppy), you still are unable to dialup. If you could dialup, that would, of course, solve everything. Re: Using source code for debian; compiling debian
On Wed, 5 Nov 1997, Bruce Perens wrote: Several hundred of the Debian packages will compile automaticaly. A number of them will not, and require a bit of hand tweaking. You can't install _all_ debian packages, as many of them conflict with each other. For example we distribute at least 4 web servers, and you'd only want one. I think this is a major shortcoming of the debian package system. Why wouldn't I want to run two different web servers? Two packages that provide the same functionality don't need to be mutually exclusive. Likewise, I'd very much like to see support for multiple concurrent package instances. This is key for migration in a production environment. It goes without saying that its a must for a development environment. It would require rethinking quite a few things though. Now I wonder why the X-Server doesn't run (3D Virge) although I installed the particiular server, just it runs in vga16 mode. How can I configure X? (xconfig or make xconfig doesn't work) you need the following packages installed: xbase, xlib6, xserver-vga16 (if you want graphical config interface), xserver for your card (my guess is xserver-s3 or xserver-svga in your case). After you've installed them, run XF86Setup (graphical configuration) or xf86config (text-based configuaration). As well how can I integrate all X-programms and games on the X-screen? There is currently just the desktop and a shell for input. Looks like you are missing a window manager. Debian has a number of window managers to choose from, including afterstep, fvwm2, fvwm95, twm and so on. They are all located in section x11. YOu may also want to install menu package which will put most of the programs you have installed on your window manager's menu. You may also edit you window manager's rc file to create custom menus, or you may use the menu package's custom menus, which will make your custom menus available to all window managers. Sorry for these questions - I'm brandnew to Debian and Linux. I checked some Faq's but didn't find the proper answers. As well I got some problems while installing Netscape. PAm running on X the following Debian mail-related packages :nbsp; exim, fetchmail, mh and exmh with subsidiary packages of metamail and mime-support.nbsp; I know one needs both mh and exmh to do mail processing if exmh is used.nbsp; Also POP3 support is needed for mail to and from the ISP. PAre exim and fetchmail also required?nbsp; Can one one just use mh and exmh by themselves to do all mail composing and handling as well as receiving and sending mail via POP3 to the ISP? I don't believe there exists an mh tool that gets pop3 mail, so you need fetchmail, or some other pop3 client. Exim is not actually required for a single user system. If you are already using procmail for sorting, you may want to make fetchmail pass the mail directly to procmail (see the fetchmail manpage) rather than delivering it to port 25 (exim, in your case) which it does by default. I believe you can also make fetchmail append directly to /var/spool/mail/user file, in case it is not possible, you can get fetchpop client which can do it. This would let you get rid of exim. PI tried mutt and think it's great for subsidiary usage. Now that you mention it, mutt has some POP3 support which I never tried. I assume it's quite inflexible though, so I would recommend leaving fetchmail on your system. -- Proudly running Debian Linux! Re: 1.3.1 upgrade: getting rid of the package base 1.1.0-13 -- dselect and downgrading dosemu
Hi, i first installed Debian 1.1 (how was it called btw ?) and then upgraded some packages from rex, bo and hamm. I did not upgrade the whole system with deselect as i had neither a CD reader nor a network connection. So i could only use floppy disks to get and install some packages with dpkg. Among the packages i upgraded were base 1.2 and base 1.3. Now i have upgraded with dselect from a 1.3.1 CD and everything is going well except for two minor details: - dselect reports the package base 1.1.0-13 as obsolete but will not purge it (neither will dpkg --purge) because it is an essential package. It does not stop me from working but it would be cleaner if i could remove it. Removing its entry from the status file would it be safe ? NO NO NO!! Don't try removing this package. It owns all of your device files. Removing it will leave your system in a completely unusable state. Just leave that package as it is. - dselect did not downgrade the packages i had installed from hamm except for dosemu. I had dosemu_0.66.6-1 and now i have dosemu_0.66.3-1 (the version in bo). you can just upgrade back to hamm version. -- Proudly running Debian Linux! Re: safely downgrading from hamm
Hi, I have the following problem: The system was installed with debian-1.2 and since then someone installed a 'hamm' ld package, namely: ldso_1.9.2-3.deb Why someone did this I have no idea as there are no traces of any system admin documentation on the system. None of the packages in bo should depend on this ldso, so someone must have tried to get something from hamm. I was trying to upgrade to the latest perl and when executing dpkg -i ldso_1.8.10-2.deb it output to console something about downgrading the package, chucked a fit and left the system hanging. This bug has bitten a number of developers. There is no safe way to downgrade ldso, and you shouldn't try it. This was just great! nothing would execute except for the alrady loaded shell stuff like 'echo' ... The system upon reboot would hang at the VFS ... line. So I had to ftp to debian from the web server box, where I found in the 'unstable' 'hamm' section the above mentioned ldso_1.9.2-3.deb, unpack it with -x, tar it up, put it on a floppy along with 'tar', use a 'rescue' disk to boot the nameserver, mount the root partition somewhere and 'tar -cvf the hamm ld' then 'ldconfig -v', cross fingers, touch wood and reboot the box ... it came up. Now, I would very much like to first find out why does this system have the 'hamm' ld on it. Is there some means of querying the debian system to find out what program/lib is depending on this 'ld'? you can grep /var/lib/dpkg/status for packages that depend on it. And if there is no program/lib that _has_ to have this 'hamm' 'ld' I would like to know what is the *safest* way to downgrade to the stable ldso_1.8.10-2.deb. I don't think there is a way to downgrade, but I don't believe this ld breaks anything (except if you try downgrading). Also, having this hamm ld is it going to interfere with un upgrade to 1.3.x ? Re: Dependency problem got me stumped....
I want to compile the kernel-29 or kernel-30 source and I want to be able to use make menuconfig. The problem is: kernel-source-2.0.29 suggests ncurses-dev (for menuconfig) kernel-source-2.0.29 recommends gcc ncurses-dev depends on libc5-dev gcc conflicts with libc5-dev You must be getting packages from unstable. However, you can just get the ncurses3.4-dev which is compiled with libc6 and you would not need to use any of alt* packages. Unfortunately, ncurses3.4-dev is still stuck in the Incoming, I think. Now, I suppose that I *could* install the kernel and ncurses to *configure* and then remove ncurses and then install gcc to compile, but this is, as an associate likes to say, functional, yet dysfunctional. I assume therefore that you have bo (or rex) installed. The problems you are mentioning are surely hamm - relevant. no, stable libc5 includes libc5-compat directory. In fact, stable libc5 is of later version that the one in unstable for whatever reason. I do have to retract my suggestion to install ldso from unstable, as downgrading back may cause a multitude of problems. I just checked, and xpm4.7 (one of the libraries reported not to load) is symlinked to bo in hamm, and hasn't been updated for a while (since march 20), so my guess that this is the problem with altdev packages is clearly wrong and upgrading to new ldso shouldn't be needed. In order to use talk in these circumstances, you need to change your hostname to one that corresponds to your IP. Something like line43.yourprovider.net. The command for changing hostname is hostname, so to make it work, you have to type hostname line43.yourprovider.net You can do this from your ip-up script to make sure you have talk always working If from the SunOS/Slackware box I do a talk to my machine, same problem, but if I do a ntalk I got the message on my Debian machine, but I cannot answer (I guess that ytalk/talk does not understand the ntalk protocol). Both of them do understand ntalk protocol. However, suns have their ntalk/talk ports switched as opposed to linux. Your /etc/services file should containt the following lines: talk517/udp ntalk 518/udp On suns, talk would be port 518 and ntalk is 517. Re: ftape problems
Thanks for your response! I tracked the problem down to ECC failures. Here is what happens: first time after format, the ftape gives ECC failures, but taper (the app I was using) told me that it saw unknown data, and asked me if it should overwrite it... before I made the connection between the ECC failures and taper unknown data error, I always picked overwrite, and after that the tape worked fine except very slow due to write errors. Anyway, the HOWTO states that this problem (ECC failure) can be caused by either bad ethernet or video card. I tried to unload my ethernet card's module, and it did not help. Do I have to physically take it out to make sure it's not at fault, or can I now safely assume that video card is the guilty one here? Re: deb-make-question: where/what is DESTDIR?
On May 14, Johann Spies wrote Please excuse my lack of understanding. I am trying to use the deb-make-package and in the documention the instruction is 3. Make any modifications to get the program to compile. If the makefile is set up to install in DESTDIR, then you will only need to make minor changes to debian/rules (DESTDIR is set in debian/rules to make sure things go into the right place). Well, many upstream programs come with a makefile that automatically installs everything in DESTDIR. If your upstream program's makefile doesn't contain it, you will have to make the necessary modifications in order to make sure everything is installed into debian/tmp. I found the variable DESTDIR nowhere in rules or in the debian-directory created by deb-make. Look in the binary-arch target of debmakes's default rules file. there is an make install DESTDIR=`pwd`/debian/tmp line there. That's what the doc is describing. I do not know what modifications I should make to get the program to compile. I do not know what the compilation process needs. I feel stupid asking this questions as the documentation is supposed to help the first time packager to quote the documentation. Re: How to trick debian into thinking a package is installed
There used to exist 2 utilities called deb2asc and asc2deb which were very useful for this kind of thing. They were part of debmake at one time then were moved to adpkg, and after adpkg's removal from distribution seem to have disappeared. Christoph, would you put them back into debmake or anywhere else for that matter? These utilities are truly useful for creating dummy packages. With those utilities available, you would just need to create a text file containing something like this: %control Package: dummy Version: 1.0 Provides: motif, tetex (and some more standard control file lines) Then you run asc2deb, and a .deb package is built. On May 9, Steve Hsieh wrote Hi, Can someone tell me how I can trick debian into thinking that a package is installed? Specifically, I have the real motif installed on my system. However, since this is (obviously) not a debian package, debian has no idea that I have it. And so if I try to install the xmcd package, it refuses to install because lesstif isn't installed, but I can't install lesstif without overwriting the real motif... I guess I could also use the --force-depends option in dpkg to force an install? So my questions are; 1. what's the dirty way to modify the config files so debian thinks lesstif is installed? 2. if I create my own binary .deb package with my motif binaries inside it, how do I change the control file so it provides lesstif? On a side note, motif apps really ought to require a motif package, and lesstiff should provide motif, as opposed to packages directly requiring lesstif. LILO is unable read any block of the kernel from a disk cillinder numbered higher than 1023. This is often a problem with disk larger than a Gigabyte or so. One way to solve the problem is to make a separate / and /usr disk partition, so that the entire / partition will be below the 1023 cillinder. I checked my hard disks and 2.12GB has 1023 cillinders and 452KB has 1018 cillinders. But I decided to repartitioned my disk anyway. So I created 50KB partition on drive D as root and I marked it Bootable, 350KB partition as /usr, 52KB partition as swap and reinstalled the Linux from very beginning, but the same problem occur. I still be able to boot it from boot floppy but not from the HD. Do you still get the same error message from Lilo when you try to install it after the repartitioning? Could you send me the contents of your /etc/lilo.conf please? I do have System Commander installed, and running with no problems, so it looks like this is not where the problems are coming from. __ Proudly running Debian Linux! I do have Cirrus Logic card, but it is CLGD542x chipset, which is supported. Yours seems to be unsupported. I gather you don't like having a generic VGA chipset which is set by default, but I don't think you have any other options. Sorry. __ Proudly running Debian Linux! Yes, this has been fixed in unstable. Could someone please explain to me the difference between the unstable and stable directories? Since it seems like all the bug fixes go in unstable, isn't the unstable stuff more stable than stable? Unstable is the beta directory. It contains all the latest releases of debian packages. You are free to download anything from there, just be aware that it might be buggy. However, due to the problems we've been having (lack of testing mainly), the stable distribution can be seen as less stable than unstable, but we are in the process of fixing it. BTW, the ld.so.conf bug is fixed in 1.2.7 which hasn't reached all the mirrors yet. __ Proudly running Debian Linux! Could the extended partition in hda3 be overlapping the one in hda4? I see hda3 ending at 1260 and hda4 beginning at 1024. I think the problem is that I don't understand extended partitions, and thus I don't see what the difference is between begin and start. /dev/hda5 1024 1261 1870 307408+ Linux native /dev/hda6 1024 1871 2484 309424+ Linux native Something is wrong here. If Extended means what it does in the dos world i.e. as opposed to primary, something is very wrong. hda1-4 should be primary and hda5-... would be extended. This means that when it says Extended, Extended is a type, such as linux native, dos fat, HPFS, NTFS. No, not exactly. Extended partition itself has to be primary, that is, one of the first four. Inside the extended partition, you can create as many logical drives (what people usually call extended partitions) as you want to. The strange thing is that begin and start numbers don't coincide. They do coincide for every partition on my machine, which has a similar setup. I would guess fdisk docs might explain why this would happen __ Proudly running Debian Linux!
