Recurring warning when updating: AGAIN!
Below is a snip from the update of my Debian 'testing' system. I see that there are again warnings that seem to be unresolved regarding gconf2. I have been pondering if this should be filed as a bug report as it is recurring though it does seem to be relative to some specific upgrade & I'm not sure which one as I haven't kept records. Both gconf2 & shared -mime-info seem to be the culprits. I know "it's testing" but does anyone know how to fix this or any recommendations on filing a bug report. -snip Processing triggers for man-db ... Processing triggers for menu ... Evony Age II does lot load on Iceweasel. It stalls at 27% every time. when I first started playing there was no issue. Trunk version of linux-image ISSUE
I', sent this previously but so far no reply. Can anyone tell me how to get rid of this issue. I did an update & the trunk version of linux-image was installed as the upgraded version. A few weeks later I tried to install the newer regular version & after a few attempts it finally installed & grub configured it. However it is not properly configured according to the installer as it keeps trying to configure the non-trunk version every time I do an update. Now I've been able to select the non-trunk version & have my system running it, even though it's not properly configured. I tried to then remove the trunk ver. & this is the error message I get. - (Reading database ... 431717 files and directories currently installed.) Removing linux-image-2.6.32-trunk-686 ... MySQL server from backports.org issue
Maybe I can get a response with more info. I upgraded to MySQL-server 5.1.1 from stable using the backports.org apps in my sources.list & pinning them . I also upgraded all of MySql as well. I did not realize there was any difference until I tried to upgrade the backports installation & I can not do it. I have discovered several things. 1. the database mysql seems to be screwed up some way. 2. I can not edit it or even open it from Webmin or MySqladmin or from any other app. I get this error: "SQL show index from `event` failed : Can't find file: './mysql/event.frm' (errno: 13)" 3. I also can not change the password for the 'required' user 'debian-system-maint' ( why is there a required user) (was not needed b/4?) 4. Basic global install requires my.cnf for it to be effective. I did as normal taking the dist file, editing it & changing the name to my.cnf. I noticed it shows the user as mysql. which I have enabled. I also see that the 'required' user 'debian-system-maint' is enabled using webmin to view this. 5. The debian-start requires the debian.cnf file and it says to NOT edit it. I did see the it indicates the user as debian-system-maint with what appears to be an obscured password. 6. I rarely have any gripes with the developers, however this just seems to be unnecessary over engineering in order to debianize the server install. 7. My question is how do I fix this? The debian readme does NOT supply an answer. Somehow the server is running and my apps seem to be running OK, but I just do not like the mess the debian developers have made of this. I also can not uninstall the server to go back to the stable version. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-user-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Does anyone else consider this a bug?
There's a new "feature" of Lenny that keeps catching me off guard. I might be wrong but I don't remember Etch ever doing this to me. It goes like this: 1. Perform a new Lenny install of the "standard package set" (no Xorg) (I always use net installs but I assume it's the same no matter what) 2. Immediately install ssh and configure a static IP address 3. Restart networking: /etc/init.d/networking restart 4. Start some services and and jobs on the server that make use of the network (start an scp or rsync of a large data set over the network is an especially good example ;-) ) 5. Walk away assuming the server will continue performing those tasks 6. Come back later to check on the server and discover that you can't log in via ssh. 7. Log into the console to see what's going on and discover that your scp/rsync and other network tasks have failed because dhcpclient is still running from the initial install's automatic DHCP network detect and had moved the server BACK to a DHCP address after the static network config. Mind you, the install does not ASK if you want DHCP or static addressing during setup. Work around: Either kill dhcpclient or restart the server to get rid of it. Problem is I keep forgetting this aspect :-) I find it extremely annoying but before I file a report I want to make sure other folks don't consider this a "feature" JW -- -- System Administrator - Cedar Creek Software http://www.cedarcreeksoftware.com -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-user-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of "unsubscribe". I am not an expert, however over the years I have gathered the following information (someone who knows better please correct me): 1. RSA is a really good algorithm. 2. Seems like a lot of people used to use DSA while the RSA algorithm was patented. Now that the RSA is in the public domain (and the patent expired anyway), there's no reason not to use it (that I'm aware of). 3. Various OS implementations of ssh-keygen (on Mac OS X and SuSE Linux, for example) will no longer allow you to create large DSA keys. The reason for this is that some US government agency (I think it was NIST?) has specified 1024 as the "official" keylength. 4. The O'Reilly ssh book (which I don't have with me right now, so I can't verify this) made some statements that indicated the DSA was originally designed for signing, not encryption (as its name indicates). I'm not sure about the fine details. It seemed (to me) to indicate that DSA was weaker. 5. The same O'Reilly book also claims that DSA was designed for NIST by the NSA (other sources read "a former NSA employee"). It claims - without reference or sources - that "subliminal channels" have been detected in DSA. Again it seemed to be indicating that this was something to be concerned about - I'm sure you can understand the implications. Based on all of the above information, I have decided I don't want to use DSA keys. JW -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? apt: "The following packages have been kept back:"
I sometimes have a hard time figuring out why apt keeps certain packages back. For example the other day during an apt-get upgrade it was "keeping back" openoffice (and all the OO componant packages). It was not requiring any packages to be removed, it wasn't causing any major packages to be upgraded. How can I find out the *reason* why a package is kept back? correct "Debian" way to log iptables to seperate file
Hello, Iptables is annoying me by: 1) printing logs to the console 2) filling my /var/log/messages up with the same logs, which then get picked up and uselessly emailed to me by logcheck and logwatch. Of course all the logging is controlled by syslog, not iptables. What I really want is for those logs (which are not worthy of their "kernel.warning" status) to go to their own file. Google searching has turned up dozens of possible options, all of which seem like rather untidy hacks. What's the "right" way to do it? Commercial support for Debian?
Does anyone know of a reasonable, trustworthy company that provides tech support for Debian (pure regular Genuine Debian - not some customized version) in the U.S.? I'm talking about high-level consultants that an experienced System Administrator / technician can call or email to get help with things he can't figure out and needs fixed quickly. Looking for per-incident support, not a yearly/monthly contract. I'm *not* talking about newbie support (though there are days my mental capacity seems to fall mighty low . . .). I would sell my own services to a newbie but I would not try to sell myself as an uber-geek to work for another admin. So I don't want to hire someone like myself - I need a real expert. FYI I already know about http://www.debian.org/consultants/#US - I am hoping for a referral. That depends (I think the answer is "No") - exactly what info are you referring to? At this time, as best I can tell the Linux distro that is going to be installed needs to have some specific features (I guess at the kernel level) in order to run inside the LDom host. It's not like VMWare, where the host can run any generic PC OS because it's a full emulator. The client OS has to have the support for the Sun virtual hardware, at the very least. Sun specifically says that Ubuntu and Gento are able to run as an LDoms guest. I found some references to the fact that Ubuntu "Gusty" is able to run in the guest -- apparently "out of the box". I haven't read maybe Ubuntu-specific details yet. Again, my question is; has anyone done this with Debian? Debian on Sun LDoms?
I asked this on the SPAC list and didn't get an answer: I'm testing out a Sun T1000 with LDoms and want to try running Debian in a guest domain. I'm not able to find any information about running Debian under LDoms with google, although I did find some pages talking about running Ubuntu in an LDom - Sun only specifies that "Linux" can be used. Has anyone tried this with Debian? Anyone know if it's possible, or have any other information about it? about wireless card installation
I have a problem to setup my wireless card(Zyxel Zyair G-220). Below are the steps I have done following the driver manual and research from Internet: 1. download kernel source code(I used 2.6.16) 2. download driver and firmware, zd1211 3. compile and install driver and firmware. 4. switch on the wireless card: ifconfig wlan0 on 5. scan for available AP: iwlist scanning 6. join AP: iwconfig wlan0 ESSID "" 7. give password(ascii): iwconfig wlan0 key s:abcd 8. I can see the wireless is existed under "/proc/net/wireless" If I run "iwconfig" I can see the ESSID, MAC address, channel, bit rate of the AP I have joined. It all looked good. However, I don't get IP from "dhclient wlan0" which said no DHCP offers received. I have tried to setup IP manually but not working still. >From the log of the AP it could see my wireless card though it didn't allocate an IP to it. I have tried static dhcp but not working. If I run "iwevent" it reported the following periodically: "03:53:24.412160 wlan0 New Access Point/Cell address:Not-Associated" Please give me a hand jw -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Thanks for the advise. Just to clarify: When I wrote that I was specifically thinking of the fact that the security team doesn't put out updates for stable -- I didn't mean securing as in settings and configuration. My fault, I wasn't clear. So what I meant was, what method do people using Testing use to stay up to date when a security patch is released for Stable and not for Testing. Reading some old Debian Sec Advisories makes me think that updates really are released with some regularity for Testing. But the official Security FAQ says that the Security Team does not really stay on top of making sure patches are available for "Testing". New user Q: Best way to stay up to date on "testing"?
Hello, Sorry to bother everyone with newbie questions, but I'm struggling to understand the entire Debian environment and need a little advise. I have been using SuSE for a long time but recently my job has required me to start administrating a Debian server that was set up with 3.1/Sarge/Testing by the co (server is actually in another state, so I'm stuck with what the co-lo put on it. I like Debian and I'm sure with time I'll figure it all out, but in the short run I need a little help. We are planning on keeping the server for quite a long time, it will be used for part of a billing system (perl/web based). I was reading the security FAQ and am somewhat alarmed to find (if I understand correctly) that Testing is not actively supported by the security team. Youch. If I could put stable on it I would, but for the reasons stated above I can't. It seems to me that the best thing for me to do is keep all the installed software up to date. For one thing, new packages are more likely to contain security fixes (even if they aren't official security patches), and also, I'm hoping that some day in the future Sage will be declared stable and I'll be able to hop on the security train. I am wondering what the best way is to go about staying up to date. If I run apt-get -s upgrade I'm told that apt wants to upgrade about 15 packages, most of which seem to be related to X (we won't ever be using X on this server. it wasn't originally installed and I"d like to get rid of it but some other package I installed had a dependancy on some gtk thing that had one on X. Oh well). Could anyone confirm that "upgrade" is the right way to stay up to date. I'm not going to run it automatically, and I'll always do a test run first to make sure nothing disastrous is going to happen. Is running upgrade on a regular basis a bad idea for any reason? It just seems like I'll need to be as up to date as possible when Sarge is declared stable in order to make a smooth transition to Sarge/Stable. Correct me if I'm wrong. I've always found it better to update packages a little at a time rather than wait till there's dozens of updates to install. If anyone has advise on how to keep a Testing system secure, I'd really like to hear it. Thanks for your time, JW P.S. If anyone has a link to some favorite documentation on Debian package handling for newbies, please send it on. I've read a lot of man pages and docs on the web site, and I'll keep reading till I get it all. But the abundance of package handling tools and front ends is quite bewildering to someone who's used to RPM and only RPM. CD-RW already came down in price, and you can find $10 ones even at CompUSA and $5 ones through mail order. Also you might heard that CD-RW can be 'reburned' 'only' 700 times or so. As it turned out many will last over 1000 burns. CD-RW adds much more flexibility to your setup: 1) you can use it as temporary collection 'bin' before you commit to CD-R. a place to dump, you know. You can organize files better. 2) you can make your temporary 'distribution' of debian. for example I got hamm CD from cheapbytes, but I only use maybe 500 packages out of 2000+, and for somethings, such as LILO*, I use my own binary. So I copy only the ones I need and replace stuffs that needs replacing. The service packages that gets downloaded can be put in later. once hamm came out I start over again from scratch saving a disk. actually something like this is much more ehh.. useful for Win95, 95a, 98, 98 second edition etc... 3) you can use it as a backup device. cd-rw is not the most ideal one but it works and media is cheaper than many tapes. 4) you can try all sort of medieval stuffs with your CD-RW ^_^ without worring about making a coaster. I had rather exceptional luck, so far anyway, with my Nomai 680RW which is just rebadged Ricoh 1600S. I got it for $300 last January 1998! Since than Nomai stopped operation in USA and if this thing breaks down I will have to return it to France to get fixed, but so far it's working just fine. I can honestly say that I got my money's worth out of this thing already. Others who bought CD-RW at the time will take a bit more time to recoup the cost, but I think most will eventually. I think you can get genuine richo 1600s for $350 or less now... get SCSI one especially if you already have IDE CD-ROM >HTH. > >-Dano

Yes i got it running, what I needed was: - libqt, a lib from Troll-Systems (is that right), is a debian package - libqt-dev - libkde the main lib for the kde project - khtmlw, a www/html widget set - lib_gif, or something like that - liblpeg jpeg libary and some fiddeling with the path entry in Makefiles and *.h files and some nice things like that For me the kdm is a nice replacement for xdm. Re: How do they burn CD's?
If you are locking for a nice GUI to burn your own CD's you can use X-CD-Roast, it has a lot of options, I found it very usefull for me! http://www.rz.fh-muenchen.de/home/ze/rz/services/projects/xcdroast/e_overview.html It's a really long URL, isn't it? su philipp -- - Ph.
