Re: [SOLVED... sort of] Wheezy printing problem: 2 identical (?) machines and 1 does not print PDFs
Hi, My problem is solved: I am able to print with both machines, although graphics appear to be very slow. Then why sort of? I do not know which driver I am actually using... After reading the discussion between Brian and Camaleón (and some suggestions in private mail, thanks to all) which centred around to PS or to PCL, that's the question, I decided to remove everything on both machines that even vaguely has something to do with printing (OK, without removing Gnome completely). I re-installed Cups and tried all drivers that came for the HP2000 DTN without any improvement. Then I (accidentally) un-installed the printer-driver-postscript-hp package, re-installed it again. After this I had two *identical entries* for the HP LaserJet 2200 Postscript driver in the CUPS browser based administration tool (not in the Gnome GUI btw). If I use the first entry in the list it does NOT work. But if I use the second entry, I can print on both machines. The source of the CUPS administration tool shows (notice the 2 entries for HP LaserJet 2200 Postscript on line 8 and 9): OPTION VALUE=foomatic-db-compressed-ppds:0/ppd/foomatic-ppd/HP-LaserJet_2200-lj4dith.ppd HP LaserJet 2200 Foomatic/lj4dith (en) OPTION VALUE=foomatic-db-compressed-ppds:0/ppd/foomatic-ppd/HP-LaserJet_2200-lj5gray.ppd HP LaserJet 2200 Foomatic/lj5gray (en) OPTION VALUE=foomatic-db-compressed-ppds:0/ppd/foomatic-ppd/HP-LaserJet_2200-ljet4.ppd HP LaserJet 2200 Foomatic/ljet4 (en) OPTION VALUE=foomatic-db-compressed-ppds:0/ppd/foomatic-ppd/HP-LaserJet_2200-Postscript.ppd HP LaserJet 2200 Foomatic/Postscript (en) OPTION VALUE=foomatic-db-compressed-ppds:0/ppd/foomatic-ppd/HP-LaserJet_2200-pxlmono.ppd HP LaserJet 2200 Foomatic/pxlmono (en) OPTION VALUE=drv:///hpijs.drv/hp-laserjet_2200-hpijs-pcl3.ppd HP LaserJet 2200 hpijs pcl3, 3.12.2 (en) OPTION VALUE=drv:///hpcups.drv/hp-laserjet_2200-pcl3.ppd HP LaserJet 2200 pcl3, hpcups 3.12.2 (en) OPTION VALUE=postscript-hp:0/ppd/hplip/HP/hp-laserjet_2200-ps.ppd HP LaserJet 2200 Postscript (recommended) (en) OPTION VALUE=postscript-hp:1/ppd/hplip/HP/hp-laserjet_2200-ps.ppd HP LaserJet 2200 Postscript (recommended) (en) OPTION VALUE=drv:///hpijs.drv/hp-laserjet_2200_series-hpijs.ppd HP LaserJet 2200 Series hpijs, 3.12.2 (en) OPTION VALUE=drv:///hpcups.drv/hp-laserjet_2200_series.ppd HP LaserJet 2200 Series, hpcups 3.12.2 (en) I do not know the difference between the two, other than the empirical proof that the first entry does not work and the second does. -- Groeten, Joost Kraaijeveld Askesis B.V. Wheezy printing problem: 2 identical (?) machines and 1 does not print PDFs
Hi, I have 2 identical Wheezy machines: they both have the same packages and the same versions for those packages Wheezy, up to date as of this morning). The configuration files in /etc/cups and /etc/foomatic are exactly identical. Both machines should print to a network printer (HP2200 DTN). I use Cups and Foomatic, and the recommended HP LaserJet 2200 Foomatic/lj5gray driver (the postscript driver has the same behaviour). Both machines print the Linux test page without problems. But one machine cannot print PDFs while the other one prints them without problem, be it a little slow (i.e. compared to the Windows machines that use the same printer). The problematic machine prints a PDF file as an almost empty pages with the following text: PCL CL error Subsystem: IMAGE Error: ExtraData Operator: ReadImage Position: 7 I have re-installed/purged/rebooted etc. and nothing helped so far. Does anyone recognises this problem? Which *machine-dependent* files exist and in which directory are there, after an installation/configuration? Anyone any ideas? Synaptic 0.70: reporting wrong status for package?
Hi, Synaptic displays all packages in the status overview as one of auto removable, local or obsolete and manual. But I do not have any packages locally or manually installed: I always use Synaptic or apt-get to do so. Testing Gnome3 Radeon OS complete system freeze
Hi, I am trying to run Debian Testing AMD64 with Gnome3 and the Radeon OpenSource driver, xserver-xorg-video-radeon. All are the latest versions, updated today (9 november 2011). After some time and always after clicking on an icon or something else on the screen my system lock up. It completely freezes, nothing works: no alt+F1 , ctrl+alt+del, alt-backspace, and no remote login via ssh. The only way to reboot is using the power button (off and than on). Using the reset button results in not finding the boot disk anymore. I can't find anything in any log file (messages, kernel, debug, daemon) Does anyone recognises this behaviour, i.e. is it a feature? What could I try to diagnose the problem? Anyone any idea as to find the cause, so I can file a bug against a package that could be the problem? TIA -- Met vriendelijke groeten, Joost Kraaijeveld Askesis B.V. Radeon fglrx performance gone in Testing AMD64
Hi, Somewhere this week the video card performance dropped spectacularly. All drag and drop operations and (web) page scrolling are suddenly excruciating slow. Glxgears went from 5000 to 60 frames per second (I know, glxgears is no benchmark). Also my screen is not painted correctly: it seems that the system forgets to paint all the pixels and I am forced to change the size of my windows to get it repainted, even if I have enabled the Tear Free Desktop option in the Catalyst Control Center. The are no signs in any log file that there are problems with the driver. I do not however see any signs of loading the firmware for the card. How can I check if the firmware is actually loaded? Radeon problems, encore....
Hi, After installing flgrx 10.11-1 from Sid on my Squeeze machine nothing worked. So I decided to revert back to fglrx 10.9-3 (which worked, sort of). But now nothing works (comfortably). I get very slow video performance with normal operations like scrolling and drag and drop. Glxgears (I know it is not a benchmark) drops to 60 FPS where it used to be 2500. I don't know what the problem exactly is, but for starters it seems that the Radeon firmware is not loaded any more. I have tried (almost?) all options that I could think of: - removed all vga references from /boot/grub/grub.conf and others, - adding fglr as module in /etc/modules, - adding fglrx-kms.conf and/or radeon-kms.conf with options fglrx modeset=0/1 and options radeon modeset=0/1, - with and without blacklisting radeon, - adding all sort of modules to /etc/initramfs-tools/modules: agpgart agpgart-amd64 i2c-core i2s-algo-bit drm drm_kms_helper ttm fglrx/radeon -running update-grub / uptdae-initramfs etc as appropriate. How can I get my Radeon card working again? What should be in my /etc/modules, /etc/initramfs-tools/modules, /etc/modprobe,d/* ? Is there anyone who has a Radion HD 3850 working on a Squeeze machine with acceptable performance tha can send me those files? TIA for any pointers to answers or solutions, ( Angus Hedger gave me a working solution for my slow Radeon card. Because it worked I tried something else as installing the next great version ;-). OK, I did what Angus suggested. Now I have a reasonable performance again, but *only* if I use Xinerama. Scrolling problems Iceweasel (Radeon HD 3850 problem?)
Hi , After an update somewhere the last few weeks (I can't remember when exactly) scrolling in Iceweasel started to become problematically. I have two (separate?) problems: 1. Scrolling of web pages with graphics is slow with frequent repainting of the complete web page from bottom to top which looks like a tidal wave on my screen. TExt pages do not seem to show this problem. 2. Clicking *just once* on the right scroll bar results in a complete scroll down as if I am clicking constantly. Radeon HD 3850 / RV670 AGP: no firmware loaded / slow
Hi, I am struggling with my Radeon HD 3850 / RV670 AGP ever since I have upgraded to XOrg 7.5 which is (still) not supported by the proprietary driver. The OSS Radeon driver is *really* slow. Switching between workplaces or (full screen) applications sometimes take more than 30 seconds. More applications lead to more seconds. I have tried every suggestion on the internet that I could find, saw all kind of video effects, including no video at all, but nothing worked so far. There are several thing that I notice: 1. In several postings I saw the mentioning of the need to load firmware. I have installed all the firmware-linux packages, including the non-free which contains the relevant Radeon firmware. I see some firmware getting loaded (eg for my Broadcom NIC) but no attempt is made to load the firmware for my Radeon card. I have fiddled with radeon.modeset=1/0 settings, both on /etc/modprobe.d conf files, as manually loading/unloading the radeon modules, but none of the attempts leaded to a working system. Should the firmware get loaded, and if so, how should I do that? 2. In the XOrg.0.log it says: (EE) RADEON(0): [agp] Could not bind (EE) RADEON(0): [agp] AGP failed to initialize. Disabling the DRI. (II) RADEON(0): [agp] You may want to make sure the agpgart kernel module is loaded before the radeon kernel module. The agpgart kernel module is compiled in ( a change from 2.6.32-trunk-amd64 which used a module, whereas 2.6.32-3-amd has it compiled in). But disabling DRI disables the acceleration I believe. Is that correct? 3. I have tried both the radeon and radeonhd driver without any success. Both drivers appear to e working. Is it correct that the radeon driver is preferred for my card? The last question: is there anyone who actually has this card working, with 2/3D acceleration? Or am I trying to do something that just is not possible (yet)? TIA My system is a fully updated Squeeze (testing) Debian AMD64: linux-image-2.6.32-9 firmware-linux 0.23 firmware-linux-free 2.6.32-9 firmware-linux-nonfree 0.23 xorg 7.5-3 xserver-xorg-video-radeon 6.12.5-1 xserver-xorg-video-radeonhd 3.0-2 mesa (dri / glx) 7.7-4 -- Groeten, Joost Kraaijeveld Askesis B.V. Apache with virtual hosts and mod-python / trac stopped working
Hi, I have a Squeeze server that, until 2 days ago, functioned good with multiple virtual hosts, mod_python and Trac. For unknown reasons it suddenly stopped working. It appears that all Location/Location directives in all virtual hosts except the default virtual host are ignored. Accessing them result in a message File does not exist: /var/www/trac.askesis.nl/docs/mpinfo where mpinfo is the following directive: Location /mpinfo SetHandler mod_python PythonInterpreter main_interpreter PythonHandler mod_python.testhandler /Location Again, the same directive is working for the default website. How to connect my ipod?
Hi, I got a brand new toy, an iPod classic 160 GB, for my birthday today. When I connect I can see it through Nautilus. But depending on the mood of my machine (?) it is mounted as /dev/sdd, /dev/sde of whatever sd* it sees fit at /media/usb0 or /media/usb1 if I happened to have a usb-memory stick in my machine. Is it possible to let the iPod appear consistently at /media/ipod so that I can use it with GtkPod, which expects it to be at that mount point (or any other consistent mount point I guess)? If so, how does one do that using Debian Squeeze? TIA -- Groeten, Joost Kraaijeveld Askesis B.V. Hi, I recently switched from Xinerama to RandR to use my two monitors in a dual head configuration. After doing that the switching between workspaces is taking a lot of time (3-5 seconds), which was (almost) instantaneous with Xinerama. Is this a known feature for this card/driver or is there a magic setting in a xorg.conf that can solve this? Or should I just revert to the Xinerama? I've ended up having to use a different tool: wifi-radar and (shudder) rebooting to get wireless to work. Typically, the dance I had to go (this was on a cross coutnry trip -- different wireless in each hotel) through was down all the interfaces, comment out the wired ethernet from /etc/network/interfaces, reboot, then use wifi-radar to connect entering appropriate keys etc. Sometimes I'd have to manually shutdown the radio (as above) and bring it back up to get it to go. I'm not convinced that my problems are necessarily with the driver/interface but that cycling the radio thing suggests it might be. I'm planning to wipe that lappy and start over anyway (need to use encryption) so I'll start over from scratch on the wireless. If I get anything useful I'll post it up. I simply use the interfaces file with mapping for the various wireless networks I use, and a script with 'iwlist eth1 scan' to figure out which AP I am in range of. I do not recall where I stumbled across this setting, but it definitely helped my issues with connecting to some APs from my T60 w/ipw3945. How to wifi with ipw3945 on Dell Vostro ???
Hi, I am running Debian Lenny on a Dell Vostro laptop which has a ipw3945 wifi card. The card is recognised by the software and it even works somehow (I can see all the wifi networks in my building using wifi-radar). But whatever I do I cannot get a (DHCP) ip address from my Zyxel AP which is using a WEP key (and it did when I still used Windows Vist so I know for a fact that it is possible). Does anyone have any idea of how to get this card talking to my WEP AP? Dell Vostro 1700 sound problem
Hi, I have a brand new Dell Vostro 1700 that works nicely with Debian Lenny AMD64 latest version of everything. It appears to do what it should do except the sound: I cannot get it to make any sound (which it did under the factory installed Windows Vista). Hi, I lost part of my stting in my home directory because of a system crash. Before the crash I had the following features that I would like get back (I did not install /configure them on purpose but they appeared suddenly, much to my pleasure): 1. I only had to give my password once during a session after which I could use synaptic and a root console without being asked for a password. 2. The background of a root console was white, the background of an ordinary console black. How do I get these features back again? Re: Built-in Network Port not detected in Debian
Check if the package zeroconf is installed. If so, disable or deinstall it and check again. -- Groeten, Joost Kraaijeveld Askesis B.V. Tyan 2885 and Sil 3114 performance problem
Hi, I experiencing (unworkable) performance problems after a change in my hardware configuration. I added a second drive (SAMSUNG SP2504C) to my on-board Sil 3114 SATA controller). Largish I/O operations (e.g. start applications of moderate size (Openoffice, Mozilla, Synaptic) , running bonnie, hdparm -t /dev/sda, copying large files) lock up my Gnome desktop and make my music stutter ,the first one being the nastiest ;-). Running hdparm or bonnie do not show any performance problems in terms of actual throughput (see below) but the unresponsive machine is quit annoying. None of the perfomance problems appear if I do the same operations on my 3Ware 9500 RAID 5 array. Does anyone recognize these problems and/or does that anyone have a sollution? If not, could you give me an advise as to what I could do to diagnose the probleme better? I have the following hard/software configuration: Stock Debian 2.6.15-1-amd64-k8-smp kernel - / and swap-partion on /dev/sda1 (sil 3114) - /var on /dev/sdb1 (sil 3114) - /home on /dev/sdc1 (3ware) Dual Opteron Tyan 2885 board with 2 prcs (248), 4 GB Sil 3114 on-board SATA controler with 1 WDC WD2000JD-00H and 1 SAMSUNG SP2504C, no raid 3Ware 9500S-8 RAID5 with 5 WDC WD1200SD disks Performance hints: WDC WD2000JD-00H hdparm -t /dev/sda: Timing buffered disk reads: 170 MB in 3.02 seconds = 56.28 MB/sec (desktop unresponsive and very modern music) SAMSUNG SP2504C hdparm -t /dev/sda: Timing buffered disk reads: 170 MB in 3.02 seconds = 56.28 MB/sec (desktop unresponsive and very modern music) 3Ware 9500S-8 hdparm -t /dev/sdc: Timing buffered disk reads: 374 MB in 3.01 seconds = 124.11 MB/sec (no problems what so ever) TIA -- Groeten, Joost Kraaijeveld Askesis B.V. Re: Strange chars in GNOME help files Debian Etch / Gnome 2.12
Hi James, The following website contains excellent instructions on which font sets to install in order to display these characters correctly: http://wiki.splitbrain.org/debianfonts Hope that helps It did. After reading and comparing the installed fonts I installed the package ttf-junicode and now it is solved. -- Groeten, Joost Kraaijeveld Askesis B.V. Re: DHCP address problem after etch upgrade
Hi David, On Mon, 2006-02-20 at 21:18 +, David Jarvie wrote: After my latest upgrade this week (I'm running etch), the DHCP address allocated to my machine has changed from being one allocated by my DHCP router to being some external address. This results in the machine on my network not being able to see my machine. Previously, the router allocated an address with a subnet mask 192.168.0.255. Now ifconfig is showing 169.254.106.31, which means that the other machine, which has address 192.168.0.101 can't see me. What is strange is that I'm getting the normal DHCP setup messages on the console: DHCPREQUEST on eth0 to 255.255.255.255 port 67 DHCPREQUEST on eth0 to 255.255.255.255 port 67 DHCPREQUEST on eth0 to 255.255.255.255 port 67 DHCPACK from 192.168.0.1 bound to 192.168.0.100 -- renewal in 302400 seconds. but the actual address is different. I tried disconnecting the router from the outside world, and the address then was 192.168.0.100 (which is what I used to get, and what I want). I presume that when I'm connected, the DHCP request is getting transmitted to my ISP and its reply is being picked up and is overwriting the 192.168.0.100 allocated by the router. Is it possible to make dhclient filter out any address which is not 192.168.0.x so that my network works? In essence a me-too post, with the unavoidable question: did you solve it and if so, what was the sollution? TIA Joost -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Strange network things: eth1 (but no nic!!) and sit0
Hi, After installing Etch on my AMD64 machine I suddenly have an extra eth1 without actually having an NIC. I cannot activate it in the Network settings applet but it is shown during boot and in the output of ifconfig (without ip address). Can anyone give me clue as to where this eth1 is comming from ? Is that related to my next question (IP6)? Or maybe firewire ? I also have a sit0 which appears to be a IPv6-in-IPv4 address. Is that correct? IS there any documentation available a to why that is (I have nothing configured myself, there is nothing about IP6 I can find on my machine)? TIA -- Groeten, Joost Kraaijeveld Askesis B.V. Strange chars in GNOME help files Debian Etch / Gnome 2.12
Hi, When I open my Gnome Help files I get these strange chars: squares with numbers like 20 (on the first line) and 02, 03,15 etc (on the second line) in them. I assume that these are Unicode chars, not being displayed properly. How do I get those characters diplayed properly? TIA -- Groeten, Joost Kraaijeveld Askesis B.V.
