Bookworm: how to set default clang to clang-15?

2023-04-17 Thread Joost Kraaijeveld
Hi,

The default clang version for Bookworm is clang-14. An installable
version of clang-15 is also available. How can I change the default
version of clang to clang-15? "update-alternatives" provides no means
of doing that? Is replacing all the symbolic links the only way?

TIA

Gnome 3.21: how to define compose key?

2016-09-11 Thread Joost Kraaijeveld
Hi,

I want to use my right super key (right win) as my compose key to be
able to type accented letters.

I have read the online manual regarding the compose key but that does
not work: there is no (disabled) "Compose Key" in "Activities-
>Keyboard->Typing". (The manual actually say "Activities->Keyboard-
>Shortcut tab->Typing" but I assume that that is for a previous version
of Gnome)

How do I enable a Compose  Key in Gnome 3.21?

TIA

Testing: Nautilus 3.8 double click expand tree?

Hi,

If I double click on a directory icon I go into that directory and I
cannot see the full directory tree any more. I would like Nautilus to
expand the tree instead. Is that possible?

TIA

Click the little [+] icon to the left of the directory icon. That
 will expand the tree.
I know that, but that is not what I want.

It's good that double-clicking a directory puts you in that directory,
and no longer shows the parent tree. That's what you want -- a way to
 focus on that one subdirectory.

No, that is not what I want. I want to *both* focus on the directory
*and* see the context of that directory, i.e. its place in the tree.
Something like in Nautilus 3.4.2, where the left panel showed the tree
and the right panel showed the directory. Which is more ore less what I
generally have seen since I started working with computers in 1989.

asus p9x79 pro: headphone does not mute speakers

2013-04-30 Thread Joost Kraaijeveld
Hi,

I have a Asus P9X79 Pro with AMD64 Wheezy, up to date as for today.
Whenever I plug in my headphone in the front panel my speakers, which
are plugged in the rear panel, do not mute. Which rather defeats the
purpose of the headphone ;-)

The manual of the board states that the audio is a Realtech ALC898
8-channel High Definition Audio CODEC, which should support
jack-detection

lspci says (the NVIDIA is from my video card and its audio is not used):

lspci |grep -i audio
00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation C600/X79 series chipset High
Definition Audio Controller (rev 06)
01:00.1 Audio device: NVIDIA Corporation GF108 High Definition Audio
Controller (rev a1)

But  cat /proc/asound/card0/codec* | grep Codec produces;
Codec: Realtek ALC898

Is this all correct? Is there a way to make the headphone mute the
speakers?

TIA

Re: [SOLVED... sort of] Wheezy printing problem: 2 identical (?) machines and 1 does not print PDFs

2012-05-27 Thread Joost Kraaijeveld
Hi,

My problem is solved: I am able to print with both machines, although
graphics appear to be very slow. Then why sort of? I do not know which
driver I am actually using...

After reading the discussion between Brian and Camaleón (and some
suggestions in private mail, thanks to all) which centred around to PS
or to PCL, that's the question, I decided to remove everything on both
machines that even vaguely has something to do with printing (OK,
without removing Gnome completely). I re-installed Cups and tried all
drivers that came for the HP2000 DTN without any improvement. Then I
(accidentally) un-installed the printer-driver-postscript-hp package,
re-installed it again. After this I had two *identical entries* for the
HP LaserJet 2200 Postscript driver in the CUPS browser based
administration tool (not in the Gnome GUI btw). If I use the first entry
in the list it does NOT work. But if I use the second entry, I can print
on both machines.

The source of the CUPS administration tool shows (notice the 2 entries
for HP LaserJet 2200 Postscript on line 8 and 9):

Wheezy printing problem: 2 identical (?) machines and 1 does not print PDFs

2012-05-25 Thread Joost Kraaijeveld
Hi,

I have 2 identical Wheezy machines: they both have the same packages and
the same versions for those packages Wheezy, up to date as of this
morning). The configuration files in /etc/cups and /etc/foomatic are
exactly identical. Both machines should print to a network printer
(HP2200 DTN). I use Cups and Foomatic, and the recommended HP LaserJet
2200 Foomatic/lj5gray driver (the postscript driver has the same
behaviour).

Both machines print the Linux test page without problems. But one
machine cannot print PDFs while the other one prints them without
problem, be it a little slow (i.e. compared to the Windows machines that
use the same printer). The problematic machine prints a PDF file as an
almost empty pages with the following text:
PCL CL error
Subsystem: IMAGE
Error: ExtraData
Operator: ReadImage
Position: 7
I have re-installed/purged/rebooted etc. and nothing helped so far.

Does anyone recognises this problem? Which *machine-dependent* files
exist and in which directory are there, after an
installation/configuration? Anyone any ideas?

TIA

Are you sure that's the recommended driver for your device? The printer
seems to support PS as well as PCL6 so using lj5gray can make the job
output slower and has less options available to configure :-?
It is the driver that the GUI says that it is the default. And I am not
sure, but I seem to remember that it used to be PS that was the default.
Anyway, with PS I have the same problem. I suspect that some
machine-dependent file is not correct. I have compared (the size of) the
files on both disks that are in the deb files and they seem to be the
same.

What is the application that is responsible for handling the automatic

AMD64 Wheezy: where to file bug, radeon, kernel or gnome-shell etc?

2012-01-05 Thread Joost Kraaijeveld
Hi all,

I have an AMD64 Wheezy system that crashes reliable if I enable
composite in xorg.conf (composite true). The crash locks up the whole
system, I cannot ssh into the system from an external computer and it
does not even react on ping. I have to use the power button to reboot.
The log-files do not show any problems. According to them, everything is
OK. The crash does not appear if I disable composite (Option Composite
off in xorg.conf), but that results in a Gnome fallback session.

I have enabled KMS (options radeon modeset=1
in /etc/modprobe.d/radeon-kms.conf), the firmware gets loaded and
hw-acceleration works (glxinfo says direct rendering: Yes
OpenGL renderer string: Gallium 0.4 on AMD RV670).

The packages I suspect are given below, but because I cannot find the
right package to file a bug against I have the following questions:

1. Which is the most likely package that causes this?
2. What could I do to (better) diagnose the problem?
3. Does anyone recognise this?
4. Any suggestion for other packages or reasons that could cause this?

Hardware:
dual monitor
ATI Technologies Inc RV670 AGP [Radeon HD 3850]

Software:

gnome-session 3.2.1-1 (from sid)

Synaptic 0.70: reporting wrong status for package?

2011-11-30 Thread Joost Kraaijeveld
Hi,

Synaptic displays all packages in the status overview as one of auto
removable, local or obsolete and manual. But I do not have any
packages locally or manually installed: I always use Synaptic or apt-get
to do so. Also, removing some of the auto removable would result in
removing applications and libraries that are not marked as auto
removable. The same applies tot local or obsolete: it results in a
cascaded removal of packages.

Does Synaptic display the wrong status? Or do the descriptions not cover
the meaning? Can I check somehow what the status of a packed is outside
Synaptic?

I am running Debian Testing AMD64, latest updates as for today applied.

Testing Gnome3 Radeon OS complete system freeze

2011-11-09 Thread Joost Kraaijeveld
Hi,

I am trying to run Debian Testing AMD64 with Gnome3 and the Radeon
OpenSource driver, xserver-xorg-video-radeon. All are the latest
versions, updated today (9 november 2011).

After some time and always after clicking on an icon or something else
on the screen my system lock up. It completely freezes, nothing works:
no alt+F1 , ctrl+alt+del, alt-backspace, and no remote login via ssh.
The only way to reboot is using the power button (off and than on).
Using the reset button results in not finding the boot disk anymore. I
can't find anything in any log file (messages, kernel, debug, daemon)

Does anyone recognises this behaviour, i.e. is it a feature? What could
I try to diagnose the problem? Anyone any idea as to find the cause, so
I can file a bug against a package that could be the problem?

TIA

Radeon fglrx performance gone in Testing AMD64

2011-04-14 Thread Joost Kraaijeveld
Hi,

Somewhere this week the video card performance dropped spectacularly.
All drag and drop operations and (web) page scrolling are suddenly
excruciating slow. Glxgears went from 5000 to 60 frames per second (I
know, glxgears is no benchmark). Also my screen is not painted
correctly: it seems that the system forgets to paint all the pixels
and I am forced to change the size of my windows to get it repainted,
even if I have enabled the Tear Free Desktop option in the Catalyst
Control Center.

The are no signs in any log file that there are problems with the
driver. I do not however see any signs of loading the firmware for the
card.

How can I check if the firmware is actually loaded?
Does anyone have an idea of what else could be wrong?

I am using a ATI Radeon HD 3850 AGP, the latest Debian AMD64 Testing
with kernel 2.6.38, fglrs 11-3-1 (non-free ATI/AMD RadeonHD display
driver).

Some output of glxinfo:

OpenGL vendor string: ATI Technologies Inc.
OpenGL renderer string: ATI Radeon HD 3850 AGP
OpenGL version string: 3.3.10600 Compatibility Profile Context

Radeon problems, encore....

2010-12-12 Thread Joost Kraaijeveld
Hi,

After installing flgrx 10.11-1 from Sid on my Squeeze machine nothing
worked. So I decided to revert back to fglrx 10.9-3 (which worked, sort
of). But now nothing works (comfortably). I get very slow video
performance with normal operations like scrolling and drag and drop.
Glxgears (I know it is not a benchmark) drops to 60 FPS where it used to
be 2500.

I don't know what the problem exactly is, but for starters it seems that
the Radeon firmware is not loaded any more. I have tried (almost?) all
options that I could think of:

- removed all vga references from /boot/grub/grub.conf and others,
- adding fglr as module in /etc/modules,
- adding fglrx-kms.conf and/or radeon-kms.conf with options fglrx
modeset=0/1 and options radeon modeset=0/1,
- with and without blacklisting radeon,
- adding all sort of modules to /etc/initramfs-tools/modules:
agpgart
agpgart-amd64
i2c-core
i2s-algo-bit
drm
drm_kms_helper
ttm
fglrx/radeon
-running update-grub / uptdae-initramfs etc as appropriate.

How can I get my Radeon card working again? What should be in
my /etc/modules, /etc/initramfs-tools/modules, /etc/modprobe,d/* ?

Is there anyone who has a Radion HD 3850 working on a Squeeze machine
with acceptable performance tha can send me those files?

TIA for any pointers to answers or solutions,

( Angus Hedger gave me a working solution for my slow Radeon card.
Because it worked I tried something else as installing the next great
version ;-). Sorry Angus, I will not do that again).

OK, I did what Angus suggested. Now I have a reasonable performance
again, but *only* if I use Xinerama. If I use amdcccle to enable

again.

Should that happen and is that repairable?

Scrolling problems Iceweasel (Radeon HD 3850 problem?)

2010-12-11 Thread Joost Kraaijeveld
Hi ,

After an update somewhere the last few weeks (I can't remember when
exactly) scrolling in Iceweasel started to become problematically. I
have two (separate?) problems:

1. Scrolling of web pages with graphics is slow with frequent repainting
of the complete web page from bottom to top which looks like a tidal
wave on my screen. TExt pages do not seem to show this problem.
2. Clicking *just once* on the right scroll bar results in a complete
scroll down as if I am clicking constantly.

I suspect that it is a problem with the N(non-free) fglrx video driver
because this does not happen onmy other PC which has a NVidia.

Does anyone recognise these problems and/or has a solution?

I have seen that report (and to be honest some more) but as it worked OK
until recently (1-2 weeks ago) so I did not think that these reports

It is actually quit annoying. Especially because it seems that after a

Radeon HD 3850 / RV670 AGP: no firmware loaded / slow

2010-03-17 Thread Joost Kraaijeveld
Hi,

I am struggling with my Radeon HD 3850 / RV670 AGP ever since I have
upgraded to XOrg 7.5 which is (still) not supported by the proprietary
driver. The OSS Radeon driver is *really* slow. Switching between
workplaces or (full screen) applications sometimes take more than 30
seconds. More applications lead to more seconds.

I have tried every suggestion on the internet that I could find, saw all
kind of video effects, including no video at all, but nothing worked so
far.

There are several thing that I notice:

1. In several postings I saw the mentioning of the need to load
firmware. I have installed all the firmware-linux packages, including
the non-free which contains the relevant Radeon firmware. I see some
firmware getting loaded (eg for my Broadcom NIC) but no attempt is made
to load the firmware for my Radeon card. I have fiddled with
radeon.modeset=1/0 settings, both on /etc/modprobe.d conf files, as
manually loading/unloading the radeon modules, but none of the attempts
leaded to a working system.

Should the firmware get loaded, and if so, how should I do that?

2. In the XOrg.0.log it says:

(EE) RADEON(0): [agp] Could not bind
(EE) RADEON(0): [agp] AGP failed to initialize. Disabling the DRI.
(II) RADEON(0): [agp] You may want to make sure the agpgart kernel
module is loaded before the radeon kernel module.

The agpgart kernel module is compiled in ( a change from
2.6.32-trunk-amd64 which used a module, whereas
2.6.32-3-amd has it compiled in). But disabling DRI disables the
acceleration I believe.

Is that correct?

3. I have tried both the radeon and radeonhd driver without any success.
Both drivers appear to e working.

Is it correct that the radeon driver is preferred for my card?

The last question: is there anyone who actually has this card working,
with 2/3D acceleration? Or am I trying to do something that just is not
possible (yet)?

TIA

My system is a fully updated Squeeze (testing) Debian AMD64:

Strange... can you boot with an older kernel and repeat the 'grep'?
Makes no difference with 2.6.32-trunk-amd or 2.6.30-2-amd64.

However, when I manually execute

modprobe -r radeon
modprobe radeon modeset=1

using 2.6.32-trunk-amd I see the request and loading for/of the radeon
firmware. After that my terminal screen goes into high resolution (the
LCD's native 1600x1200 I guess). I cannot (re)start gdm however. I
cannot determine why because I have to reboot to get a usable machine.

Hi Andrei,

OK, doing

modprobe -r radeon
modprobe radeon modeset=1

using 2.6.32-3-amd64 results in a working machine which actually
performance workplace and application switching at acceptable speed.

Now I just have 1 error left in my XOrg.log:

[dri] radeon kernel module version is 2.0.0 but version 1.17.0 or newer is

BTW: how can I get the radeon module loaded with those parameters by

cumbersome.

 Have a look at
 http://www.x.org/wiki/radeonBuildHowTo#TroubleshootingKMSproblems

If you are loading the module after having already started X, then
this might be the only problem. See below.

BTW: how can I get the radeon module loaded with those parameters by

Edit /etc/initramfs-tools/modules and add the line:

 radeon modeset=1

Save the file and run (as root):

 # update-initramfs -u

 Reboot, this should do it.

If enabling KMS on boot does not solve your DRI problem, please report
back. I had the same problem when I first installed Debian on my home
computer and I have solved it, but I don't remember the exact steps I
 took to fix it.

It did not work, I keep getting the same error. If you have the time to
look at you home solution, please do. I would really appreciate that.

Apache with virtual hosts and mod-python / trac stopped working

2010-02-26 Thread Joost Kraaijeveld
Hi,

I have a Squeeze server that, until 2 days ago, functioned good with
multiple virtual hosts, mod_python and Trac. For unknown reasons it
suddenly stopped working.

It appears that all Location/Location directives in all virtual
hosts except the default virtual host are ignored. Accessing them result
in a message File does not exist: /var/www/trac.askesis.nl/docs/mpinfo
where mpinfo is the following directive:

Location /mpinfo
SetHandler mod_python
PythonInterpreter main_interpreter
PythonHandler mod_python.testhandler
/Location

Again, the same directive is working for the default website.

Does anyone have any idea where to look for a solution for this problem
or experienced the same problem (preferably with a solution ;-))?

radeonhd: no acceleration DRI / AGP???

2010-01-30 Thread Joost Kraaijeveld
Hi,

Does the radeonhs driver support acceleration? I have no performance
what so ever with the radeonhd driver with my RV670 AGP Radeon HD 3850

Looking into the XOrg.0.log I see:

(WW) RADEONHD(0): [agp] AGP not available
(EE) RADEONHD(0): [agp] AGP failed to initialize. Disabling the DRI.
(II) RADEONHD(0): [agp] You may want to make sure the agpgart kernel
module

And further in the file:

(II) AIGLX: Screen 0 is not DRI2 capable
(II) AIGLX: Screen 0 is not DRI capable

But the agpart is loaded:

panoramix:/home/jkr# lsmod | grep agp
amd64_agp 6814 0
agpgart24733 3 ttm,drm,amd64_agp

Does anyone has any idea of how to get (hardware) acceleration working?

How to connect my ipod?

2010-01-09 Thread Joost Kraaijeveld
Hi,

I got a brand new toy, an iPod classic 160 GB, for my birthday today.
When I connect I can see it through Nautilus. But depending on the mood
of my machine (?) it is mounted as /dev/sdd, /dev/sde of whatever sd* it
sees fit at /media/usb0 or /media/usb1 if I happened to have a
usb-memory stick in my machine.

Is it possible to let the iPod appear consistently at /media/ipod so
that I can use it with GtkPod, which expects it to be at that mount
point (or any other consistent mount point I guess)? If so, how does one
do that using Debian Squeeze?

gdm is a display manager (I'm using xdm, BTW). The default gnome window
manager should be metacity (you can check that with ps uxww |grep
 metacity).
Ah, of course, sorry about the confusion: yes, Metacity.

Anyway we are obviously using totally different window managers, but the
problem is the same. Sounds like either an X server or driver issue
 then...
As you are running testing (lenny here), can you try wether the delay
occurs with the open source drivers (radeon and radeonhd IIRC) as well,
 please?
I can try that but not before early next week: I need a working machine
because of some deadlines and I am not prepared to experiment more that
just running Debian testing, especially as my chipset is not mentioned
explicitly in the Debian package
(http://packages.debian.org/squeeze/xserver-xorg-video-radeonhd)

slow workspace switching ATI Radeon 3850 fglrx/non-free RandR

Hi,

I recently switched from Xinerama to RandR to use my two monitors in a
dual head configuration. After doing that the switching between
workspaces is taking a lot of time (3-5 seconds), which was (almost)
instantaneous with Xinerama.

Is this a known feature for this card/driver or is there a magic setting
in a xorg.conf that can solve this? Or should I just revert to the
Xinerama?

I am using the latest version of the drivers as from the non-free Debian
testing repositories: 9.12-1 on a Debian AMD64 (testing) machine.

How to compiling Boost 1.41 into .deb packages?

Hi,

Because I want (actually need) the Boost package 1.41 I must compile it
myself as there is no Boost 1.41 (yet) in Debian testing (or sid). I
really want to use Debian packages for better maintenance of my

I asked this on the Boost list but the solution they gave me there did
not work:

$ tar xvfz boost1.41.tgz
$ apt-get source libboost1.40-dev
$ mv boost1.40-1.40.0/debian boost1.41
$ cd boost1.41
$ cd debian (replace all 1.40 occurences with 1.41)
$ dpkg-buildpackage

It stopped with errors like:

# package libboost-doc
rm -rf debian/libboost1.41-doc/usr/share/doc/libboost1.41-doc/HTML
mkdir -p debian/libboost1.41-doc/usr/share/doc/libboost1.41-doc/HTML

Howto sign e-mail using PGP (Debian Lennyy Evolution2.22.3.1)?

2008-09-29 Thread Joost Kraaijeveld
Hi,

I am trying to find out how signing email works using Evolution on
Debian Lenny. I created a PGP key, exported it to the key servers, where
it arrived (at least that is what
I suspect):

e.g.

gpg --recv-keys 673C3196
gpg: requesting key 673C3196 from hkp server subkeys.pgp.net
gpg: key 673C3196: Joost Kraaijeveld [EMAIL PROTECTED] not
changed
gpg: Total number processed: 1
gpg: unchanged: 1

But whenever I send an email to *myself* (through a MS Exchange 2000
server) using PGP sign Evolution says Invalid signature. Mail from
other people seem to work correctly: in the end (after some clicking) I
get valid signature.

Can anyone give me a clue how to get this working ?

Well, if the sig fails, there can be two cases:
 1) The signature never was correct. This is then a bug in Evolution
 2) The message was changed on the way
I suspect the Exchange box, as the signature is OK in the send mail
items.

Have a thorough look at what is in your box with send items (or even in
your outbox before sending it to the server). That might give a clue
where of where it went wrong.
Exchange I guess...

How to connect Nokia 6310i to Dell Vostro 1700 with Bluetooth?

2008-09-09 Thread Joost Kraaijeveld
Hi,

I am trying to connect my Nokia 6310i to my Dell Vostro 1700 with
Bluetooth on Debian Lenny amd-64 2.6.26-1 . I have read
http://users.tkk.fi/u/kehannin/bluetooth/bluetooth.html and
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BluetoothSetup but that did not help.

Is there anyone that has such combination (or look alike) working? If
so, could you give me some directions on how to get it work, as it does
not seem to run OOTB?

TIA

problem using 4.2.1-sjlj MingW cross compiler on Debian AMD64:functions not declared

2008-07-21 Thread Joost Kraaijeveld
Hi,

I have a problem with a 4.2.1-sjlj Ming cross compiler on Debian (both
with my own compiled and the Debian version)

Compiling any C++ source using a C++ compiler header included (e.g.
cstdlib) result in the following kind of errors:

/home/jkr/mingw_cross_env-1.4/usr/lib/gcc/i386-mingw32msvc/4.2.1-sjlj/include/c++/cstdlib:164:

/home/jkr/mingw_cross_env-1.4/usr/lib/gcc/i386-mingw32msvc/4.2.1-sjlj/include/c++/cstdlib:179:

/home/jkr/mingw_cross_env-1.4/usr/lib/gcc/i386-mingw32msvc/4.2.1-sjlj/include/c++/cstdlib:183:

error: '::strtof' has not been declared

Using stdlib.h with the same source compiles OK.

I have the impression that it has something to do with C99 support
(because alle errors are within some GCC macros about C99) but I don't
have any idea how to solve it. Is there anyone with any idea where to
look or what to try (e.g. maybe I should use some configure options for
either the build of the compiler or the build of my own executable)?

TIA

Update on: How to wifi with ipw3945 on Dell Vostro ???

2007-10-13 Thread Joost Kraaijeveld
I still cannot wifi with my laptop but I can see that the laptop is
sending it's DHCP requests to the network, I can see the request being
answered by the server but somehow/somewhere the the response gets lost.

If I try to make a connection through the NetworkManager I see (using
tcpdump) the following traffic.

Questions about what I see:
- What are those oiu Unknown things I see?
-Are the lines with ethertype Unknown (which all seem to be from foreign
(== not mine) MAC addresses) from other AP's in the building?
- If so, could they interfere somehow with my dhcp requests?
- Why do I see IP6 things while my whole network is IP4?

AP I am in range of.

I do not recall where I stumbled across this setting, but it definitely
helped my issues with connecting to some APs from my T60 w/ipw3945. I
added the 'associate=1' option to the module load, and all was well:

 $ cat /etc/modprobe.d/ipw3945d
 install ipw3945 modprobe --ignore-install ipw3945 associate=1
 /etc/init.d/ipw3945d modprobe-start
 remove ipw3945 /etc/init.d/ipw3945d modprobe-stop modprobe -r
 --ignore-remove ipw3945

I have tried almost every solution I have found on the internet (I
*really* need wifi) and suprise: I had contact with my AP. Once. Slowly.
Me happy ;-). Rebooted to verify the solution. Nothing works

I am desperate and suddenly know why the rest of the world does not like
Linux and only the motivated survive.

How to wifi with ipw3945 on Dell Vostro ???

Hi,

I am running Debian Lenny on a Dell Vostro laptop which has a ipw3945

I do I cannot get a (DHCP) ip address from my Zyxel AP which is using a

Dell Vostro 1700 sound problem

2007-10-09 Thread Joost Kraaijeveld
Hi,

I have a brand new Dell Vostro 1700 that works nicely with Debian Lenny
AMD64 latest version of everything.

It appears to do what it should do except the sound: I cannot get it to
make any sound (which it did under the factory installed Windows Vista).
Although I like it to be quite sometimes I really would like to hear my
MP3 collection with rather loud hardrock.

Is there anyone with a similar computer that actually has sound? Anyone
any suggestion of how to get te sound working?

TIA

2007-05-03 Thread Joost Kraaijeveld
Hi,

I have written a small Hello world program that I want to cross
compile from Debian to Windows using the Mingw32 package. I can run
configure both on Debian and on Windows without problem.

Can anyone give me the correct syntax for calling configure so that I
can compile the program on Linux and run it on Windows?

I tried something like:

/configure
--build=i686-pc-linux-gnu
--host=i686-pc-linux-gnu
--target=i686-pc-mingw32

but that did not do the trick on my AMD64 Debian Etch (I think the
configuration names do not match but how can I find the correct
ones???).

TIA

Debian AMD64 boots only at random: how to use labels/fstab/grub

2006-09-29 Thread Joost Kraaijeveld
Hi,

After an update of my kernel to 2.6.17 my machine only boots at random.
I have googled for a solution and it appears that it happens because of
the way the harddisks are found during startup . The solution described
involves using lables in fstab and grub (menu.lst).

But whatever I do, I cannot find a way to add labels in my fstab an grub
that actually work. Can anyone tell me what I have to do to make my
machine boot reliable using labels with fstab/grub? I have tried to add
labels to both fstab and menu.lst but a reboot failed miserably

Excerpt from my menu.lst

USB rescue/boot disk

2006-09-11 Thread Joost Kraaijeveld
Hi ,

I want a bootable USB stick that will boot any machine that allows me to
boot from USB: a Debian Live USB (and not CD). I have found a howto on
the internet (http://feraga.com/) but that one does not seem to work for
me.

Is it actually possible to create an USB rescue/boot disk that contains
a Debian Etch AMD64 or i386 based installation? Is there an image
available somewhere (as the Debian Live Project does not have such an
image (yet?) )?

Applications do not get a menu item in my Gnome menu???

2006-04-12 Thread Joost Kraaijeveld
Hi,

Every so now and then I install an GUI application that does not show up
in any menu I can click on. This time it is doxywizard from the package
doxygen-gui 1.4.6-2.

The package has installed an /usr/share/menu/doxygen-gui file and I
thought that that was the file that would make the program appear in a
specific menu:

The contents of the file:

cat /usr/share/menu/doxygen-gui
?package(doxygen-gui):\
  needs=X11\
  section=Apps/Programming\
  title=Doxywizard\
  description=Doxygen Configuration Editor\
  command=/usr/bin/doxywizard

1. Given the file above, should that program appear in any menu? Is so,
which menu?
2. How can I make the program appear?
3. Is the the manual at
http://www.debian.org/doc/packaging-manuals/menu.html/ still valid (I
tried several things described in that manual but I get all kind of
results, and not anyone the wanted result ;-))?

Postgresql 8.1.3 Debian installation encoding question

Hi,

I was forced to reinstall PostgreSQL 8.1.3 on my Debian machine, using

one I actualy had :-( ). But after my reinstallation I suddenly had
SQL_ASII as (default) encoding.

How can I change that? Why did the Debian encoding change? Can I still
use the Debian deb files or must I manually initdb PostgreSQL?

1. I only had to give my password once during a session after which I
could use synaptic and a root console without being asked for a

2. The background of a root console was white, the background of an

How do I get these features back again?

Tyan 2885 and Sil 3114 performance problem

Hi,

I experiencing (unworkable) performance problems after a change in my

Running hdparm or bonnie do not show any performance problems in terms
of actual throughput (see below) but the unresponsive machine is quit
annoying. None of the perfomance problems appear if I do the same

Hi James,

The following website contains excellent instructions on which font sets
to install in order to display these characters correctly:

 http://wiki.splitbrain.org/debianfonts

 Hope that helps
It did. After reading and comparing the installed fonts I installed the
package ttf-junicode and now it is solved.

Re: DHCP address problem after etch upgrade

2006-02-25 Thread Joost Kraaijeveld
Hi David,

After my latest upgrade this week (I'm running etch), the DHCP address
allocated to my machine has changed from being one allocated by my DHCP
router to being some external address. This results in the machine on my
network not being able to see my machine.

Previously, the router allocated an address with a subnet mask 192.168.0.255.
Now ifconfig is showing 169.254.106.31, which means that the other machine,
which has address 192.168.0.101 can't see me. What is strange is that I'm
getting the normal DHCP setup messages on the console:

 DHCPREQUEST on eth0 to 255.255.255.255 port 67
 DHCPREQUEST on eth0 to 255.255.255.255 port 67
 DHCPREQUEST on eth0 to 255.255.255.255 port 67
 DHCPACK from 192.168.0.1
bound to 192.168.0.100 -- renewal in 302400 seconds.

but the actual address is different. I tried disconnecting the router from
 the
outside world, and the address then was 192.168.0.100 (which is what I used
to get, and what I want). I presume that when I'm connected, the DHCP request
is getting transmitted to my ISP and its reply is being picked up and is
overwriting the 192.168.0.100 allocated by the router.

Is it possible to make dhclient filter out any address which is not
192.168.0.x so that my network works?
In essence a me-too post, with the unavoidable question: did you solve
it and if so, what was the sollution?

TIA

Joost

To make a long story short: Check for zeroconf, uninstall it, purge it,
do an ifdown/ifup on your interface, and maybe run the dhcp client

Thank. I uninstalled it and now it works.

Strange network things: eth1 (but no nic!!) and sit0

2006-02-25 Thread Joost Kraaijeveld
Hi,

After installing Etch on my AMD64 machine I suddenly have an extra eth1
without actually having an NIC. I cannot activate it in the Network
settings applet but it is shown during boot and in the output of
ifconfig (without ip address). Can anyone give me clue as to where this
eth1 is comming from ? Is that related to my next question (IP6)? Or
maybe firewire ?

I also have a sit0 which appears to be a IPv6-in-IPv4 address. Is that
correct? IS there any documentation available a to why that is (I have
nothing configured myself, there is nothing about IP6 I can find on my
machine)?

TIA

Strange chars in GNOME help files Debian Etch / Gnome 2.12

2006-02-25 Thread Joost Kraaijeveld
Hi,

When I open my Gnome Help files I get these strange chars: squares with
numbers like 20 (on the first line) and 02, 03,15 etc (on the second
line) in them. I assume that these are Unicode chars, not being
displayed properly.

How do I get those characters diplayed properly?

TIA
