NIC

2001-09-07 Thread Kevin Lee

Does anyone know if SmartLink 10/100TX Fast
Ethernet Adapter (I think it's also Realtek RTL8139) is supported by
Linux? If so, the name of the driver please.

Kernel upgrade

2001-07-16 Thread Kevin Lee

Hi,
 I have a (stable) potato rv2,
that's running kernel 2.2.18pre21. Before I upgrade and compile kernel
2.4, is there any thing I need to watch out for? I heard somebody said
that some modules, headers path, whatever, have to change. Can someone
give me some guidance?

Where can I find modversion.h???

2001-07-14 Thread Kevin Lee

Hi,
I am tring to get my network
card working and recently got the source codes from a developer. I
followed his instruction to compile but got the error of modversion.h not found
error:

DarkHorse:/usr/src/modules# gcc -I/usr/include/linux -DMODULE
-D_KERNEL_ -O6 -c winbond-840.c winbond-840.c:111: linux/modversions.h: No
such file or directoryIn file included from
winbond-840.c:133:kern_compat.h:42: linux/modversions.h: No such file or
directory

Yeah,it is true that it isn't found when I check the
/usr/include/linux directory. I am wondering if the header file is
supposed to be created when the kernel is compiled. And how do I get
modversion.h? By recompiling the source again or what? I have a
kernel of 2.2.18pre21.

Thanks in advance,
Kevin Lee

Winbond 840 NIC Card

2001-07-13 Thread Kevin Lee

Hi,
 I've downloaded the winbond NIC
card before. It works fine with my RH6.2. I now switch to debian and
experience some problems while compiling. Here is a brief
description:

DarkHorse:/usr/src/modules# uname -aLinux
DarkHorse 2.2.18pre21 #1 Sat Nov 18 18:47:15 EST 2000 i586
unknownDarkHorse:/usr/src/modules# gcc -DMODULE -D_KERNEL_ -O6 -c
winbond-840.c winbond-840.c:111: linux/modversions.h: No such file or
directoryIn file included from winbond-840.c:133:kern_compat.h:42:
linux/modversions.h: No such file or directoryDarkHorse:/usr/src/modules#
gcc -DMODULE -D_KERNEL_ -O6 -c pci-scan.c pci-scan.c:56:
linux/modversions.h: No such file or directoryIn file included from
pci-scan.c:67:kern_compat.h:42: linux/modversions.h: No such file or
directoryDarkHorse:/usr/src/modules#

I do have version.h under /usr/include/linux
directory, but I don't see modversion.h lying around anywhere. I have
looked at the document (www.scyld.com/expert/modules.html)
on how to obtain the header file for version.h so I figured I could the similar
thing for modversion.h, but I found out I don't have the source for he kernel,
so I couldn't do:cd /usr/src/linux; make
include/linux/modversion.h

I was wondering if I can have anyone's
modversion.h, will it matter? Or anyway specific way of getting
it.

Thanks,
Kevin

getting dhcp package

2001-07-12 Thread Kevin Lee

Hi,
I wonder what kind of dhcp
package I need to install to make my network work. There are 5 packages
found at package list for the stable distribution of debian:
stable dhcpcd 1:1.3.17pl2-8
(36.3k) DHCP client for automatically configuring IPv4
networking stable dhcp-relay 2.0pl4-2 (136.4k)
 DHCP Relay stable dhcp-client 2.0pl4-2
(183.5k) DHCP Client stable dhcp-dns
0.50-3 (9.9k) Dynamic DNS updates for DHCP
stable dhcp 2.0pl4-2 (195.4k) DHCP
server for automatic IP address assignment

Do I need a server or client or both? Mm, I
guess just client. What's DHCP Relay? Anyone knows?

Re: Dumbterminal on network

1999-05-13 Thread Kevin Lee
Robert,

If it is a cisco router you will see a RJ45 console port on the back of it.
The 7000, 7500 series if I remember correctly will have a RS-232. This is
actually a serial connection that runs a 9600 baud, 8 data bits, 1 stop
bit, and no parity. Cisco also supplies an adapter for the serial
connection between a terminal or pc and the RJ45. While in console mode
you can telnet directly out to another host. The command is: telnet
xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx or telnet hostname if you have dns set up on the router.
By attaching the dumb terminal to the router's console port you will not
need to assign an IP address.

logining into the router, but I don't think that is possible. All it has
on it is a serial port and no way to assign it an IP. I'm guessing I can
just make this another terminal screen on the router, but I'm not quite
sure how to do this. I should be able to connect the two serial ports
together and tell the router to put a console to that com port, right? Or
any I way off? How would I go about adding this dumb terminal to the
network? Any help would be preciated. Thanks.

Re: dselect.... missing the obvious?

1999-03-31 Thread Kevin Lee
Chris,

When you choose option number 2 in dselect, press the space bar to clear
the help screen and then press the slash key (/). This will put you in a
search mode. Just type in the name of the package you wish to install at
the Search for ? prompt.

Hello again and thanks for all the help this debian-newbie is getting!

I've done several (custom) installs of slink using dselect, and each
time I waste a bunch of time searching for certain packages I
want for instance ntp, sendmail, snmp, pine, joe

I am getting a little more familiar with the organization of the
packages but it seems I must be doing it the difficult way, manually
searching through the entire list!

I know about the re-order list options, but there must be a way to
search the package list for a keyword, package name or catagory,
how do I do this?

Second, once I have a favorite base system, can I integrate that
into the dselect program for future installs?

TIA,
Chris

X11

1999-03-24 Thread Kevin Lee

I have just installed Debian Linux 2.1 from scratch. Everything is working
properly except X11. I am currently using a Diamond Stealth 64 Video VRAM
graphics adapter. My problem is as follows:

When Linux boots up xdm is automatically started (which is fine). The GUI
login screen appears. When I login in as root or any other user X11 seems
to try to start but then flickers and returns to the login screen. If any
one knows how to correct this I would be grateful.

Thanks,
