Re: why do the developers keep changing mail / mailx?
On 07/12/2017 12:58 PM, Gary Dale wrote: I just spent about an hour with Google trying to fix a bash script that worked last year. The problem was that it stopped sending attachments. In the course of my research I found that mail / mailx over the years has used a variety of flags for attachments but now seems to have dropped the capability entirely. At one point -a would attach a file. At another, mailx adopted -A to do it. Lately neither program seems to support attachments. Fortunately I eventually found s-nail which seems to be a drop-in replacement for the older mail / mailx programs. However I remain puzzled by the loss of support for attachments. Even all the web pages describing different options for adding attachments have got good examples of why it is needed. Why did the mail / mailx developers drop support for attachments? The "mailutils" package provides "mail" with the -A, --attach=FILE option.

I tried accessing 'myhome.westell.com' over dial-up and it said Server not found, and I didn't think 'nameserver 192.168.1.1' was correct because it's the address to configure the modem. However it must be right because everything is working now. What happened is I called Verizon tech support and told them that I entered my user name and password on the modem configuration page, but I still couldn't access the Internet. The tech said I had no password on the Verizon side. This is probably because I wasn't using IE during the initial setup. A day or two later I asked one of the techs to setup the password, but I guess she didn't do it right. Then the tech clicked on the disable button and I instantly had access to the net. She said that if I ever reset the modem I could do this myself by entering http://192.168.1.1/verizon/redirect.htm; and then click on the disable button. Later I tried the address and the button said enable. The reason I couldn't access 192.168.1.1 in the first place was because when I tried to use pppoeconf I made a mistake when I changed an Ethernet setting in the bios, which later caused a problem for the DHCP client. At the time the change seemed to have no effect. So I want to thank everyone that tried to help me! All of the information you provided was good. My modem says it's a DSL2+Router, so maybe it would work if it was just a DSL2 modem without the Router? Pppoeconfig will work if the modem is configured for bridge mode (like mine) but not if it is configured as a router (like yours). I suggest that you follow Mike Bird's advice below. You are making it more complex than it is. Going by the replies I've received, if I use DHCP I will have to use IE to set the username and password in the modem (the IE I have running under Wine can't access the modem). I think this is probably true, because I don't see a way to enter the username and password in dhclient.conf. Should the username be entered in the modem as just 'user' or '[EMAIL PROTECTED]'? I'll try to setup DHCP without a password and see if it works, but it will take awhile to figure this out. I do know someone that uses Windows and they live close enough that I might be able to use their computer to set the modem. The techs at Verizon say I could change the modem from router mode to bridge mode using IE, but then I would have to use a router with the modem, which I don't have don't want to do. So is it possible to use the modem in bridge mode with pppoe and not use a router? If so, it seems like it might be better this way because then I will probably be able to see the transfer rate on my toolbar. But then it might be faster using DHCP. Does using the modem in router mode protect the computer better than using it in bridge mode? Anyway this is still pretty confusing to me, so I hope I'll be able to figure it out in the next couple of weeks. In article [EMAIL PROTECTED] you wrote: I've been using Debian with dial-up for about 8 years and it's getting pretty slow, so I thought I would try DSL. The problem is I have absolutely no understanding of how DSL works. If I could get a connection I don't even understand how the browsers, etc. know how to use it. And this is after reading the docs, searching Google and the Debian list, etc. Is there a good step by step guide somewhere? there are several versions of DSL. The most common uses what is known as discrete multitone modulation. The spectrum of the cable is divided into frequency bins. The bottom-most bin is used for POTS (Plain old telephone service). The upper bins are divided into several hundred channels, some of which are used for transmitting-Upstream and the rest are used for receiving-Downstream. Regularly the downstream channels exceed the upstream channels giving rise to the term Asymmetric in ADSL. In each bin the spectrum is used much like that of a conventional modem. However prior to the transmission of actual data the DSL modem at the customer's premesis and that at the ISP (usually called a DSLAM) exchange signals in an attempt to maximize the bit rate in each bin (independently). Once the bit rate is established control is passed to a higher level protocol, usually the Point-to Point protocol (PPP) which provides the connectivity and in some cases authentication (logon) and info exchange (e.g. DNS, default router). Hope this helps. This is interesting. I just wish I was a little closer to getting everything configured correctly. Thank you and thanks to everyone else that has tried to help. After upgrading from slink to potato the pppd persist option no longer reruns the scripts in /etc/ppp/ip-up.d after a connection has been broken and then reestablished. Is there some way to configure pppd so the scripts are rerun after persist reconnects? If not, is it possible to change from persist to nopersist in a /etc/ppp/ip-up.d script? I know this sounds counterintuitive, but if I could do this I can rerun pppd by checking for a leftover fetch*.pid after a connection is broken. If none of the above, maybe I can figure out how to make use of the redialer script in /doc/ppp/examples. Larry

Re: Mail/news software
I've looked at most of what is available and the closest thing to Yarn is the Tin news reader, they're almost identical. For email the best thing I've found is Mutt. Mutt can be configured with what I call 'tin style cursor keys' so I can go back and forth between readers without getting confused. I believe they both have everything you want except maybe GPG, but the newer versions may have it. I don't see much need for the GUI multiple windows thing, but you can run either one of the readers in multiple windows (xterms). If you ever find anything that works like Yarn or Tin and does both email and news let me know. :-) On Apr 29, 2000, Kovacs Istvan wrote: Hello! What mail and news software do you recommend? RE: rdate fails Y2K?
I searched through all of the old messages on this subject and couldn't find a fix for the problem, except using another time server. My problem is I'm behind a firewall and can only use a local time server that won't work with rdate. Has rdate been fixed yet? If so, is there somewhere can I get a copy that will work with Slink? Installation - modules?
When I first installed hamm a few months ago I selected the following modules to use for a PPP based system: nls_cp437 umsdos lp serial psaux ppp slip So far I haven't spent much time with it, but I have PPP, lynx, minicom, and couple of other packages installed and working. Today I reinstalled hamm on another partition to try another mouse driver and noticed that the following modules were recommend on a help sheet: bsd_comp dummy slhc nls_iso8859_1 It sounds like bsd_comp is something I would need even though PPP seems to be working fine without it, dummy might be needed for diald, slhc might be required for diald and slip even though I'm not going to use slip to connect, and I have no idea what nls_iso8859_1 is for. So what I'm wondering is do I actually need any of these last four modules? And if so, why? Thanks, Larry Fletcher Redondo Beach, CA USA

(I know that only the phone number was changed, because I use a DOS offline reader with the same provider and that's all I had to change.) 2) When I ran PON I immediately noticed the following problem with PAP authentication, so I thought I might have accidentally selected PAP instead of CHAT when I changed the phone number. But this had no effect, because when I ran PON again the same PAP authentication message appeared. I have rerun pppconfig numerous times being extremely careful to enter everything correctly and I still get the same PAP authentication message. I tried deleting /etc/ppp/peers/provider in an effort to erase the defaults and start over, but when I ran pppconfig the defaults were still there. What do you mean by the defaults? The default valuse displayed by pppconfig are not read from a file. They are generated internally by pppconfig when the provider files (/etc/chatscripts/provider and /etc/ppp/peers/provider) either don't exist or don't look right. I thought pressing enter on all of my previous defaults except for the change from PAP to CHAT might be causing pppconfig to think that nothing was changed, so I was trying to get rid of my defaults and start over. What files should I delete to get pppconfig back to where it was when I first installed hamm? When you first installed hamm the ppp package installed a set of default files. Pppconfig ignored these and showed you its defaults. It then replaced the files installed by the ppp package with those it generated when you answered the questions. Look in /etc/chatscripts and /etc/ppp/peers for files named 'provider.bak'. Depending on exactly what you did, these files may contain your data. Rename each of them from 'provider.bak' to just 'provider' and run pppconfig again. If you are lucky your old data will come up. If not you will have to enter it all again. I'm pretty sure there was only one provider.bak file in /etc/ppp/peers and I must have accidentally deleted it. But this is not a problem, because after I deleted all of the pppconfig files reentering my information was easy. I just have no idea why changing the phone number with pppconfig would cause a login failure? When I started using Debian a few months ago I thought pppconfig was the easiest part of the whole installation. Larry Fletcher Redondo Beach, CA USA P.S.
