Why did the mail / mailx developers drop support for attachments?

The "mailutils" package provides "mail" with the -A, --attach=FILE option.

2008-01-20 Thread Larry Fletcher
In article [EMAIL PROTECTED] you wrote:
I looked at your resolv.conf in your earlier post and I don't see
a problem. What problem do you see?

I tried accessing 'myhome.westell.com' over dial-up and it said Server
not found, and I didn't think 'nameserver 192.168.1.1' was correct
because it's the address to configure the modem. However it must be
right because everything is working now.

What happened is I called Verizon tech support and told them that I
entered my user name and password on the modem configuration page, but
I still couldn't access the Internet. The tech said I had no password
on the Verizon side. This is probably because I wasn't using IE
during the initial setup. A day or two later I asked one of the techs
to setup the password, but I guess she didn't do it right. Then the
tech clicked on the disable button and I instantly had access to the
net. She said that if I ever reset the modem I could do this myself
by entering http://192.168.1.1/verizon/redirect.htm; and then click
on the disable button. Later I tried the address and the button said
enable.

The reason I couldn't access 192.168.1.1 in the first place was
because when I tried to use pppoeconf I made a mistake when I changed
an Ethernet setting in the bios, which later caused a problem for the
DHCP client. At the time the change seemed to have no effect.

So I want to thank everyone that tried to help me! All of the
information you provided was good.

By the way, I found the following site that gives some good information

Pppoeconfig will work if the modem is configured for bridge mode (like
mine) but not if it is configured as a router (like yours). I suggest
that you follow Mike Bird's advice below. You are making it more complex
 than it is.

Going by the replies I've received, if I use DHCP I will have to use
IE to set the username and password in the modem (the IE I have
running under Wine can't access the modem). I think this is probably
true, because I don't see a way to enter the username and password in
dhclient.conf. Should the username be entered in the modem as just
'user' or '[EMAIL PROTECTED]'?

I'll try to setup DHCP without a password and see if it works, but it
will take awhile to figure this out.

I do know someone that uses Windows and they live close enough that I
might be able to use their computer to set the modem. The techs at
Verizon say I could change the modem from router mode to bridge mode
using IE, but then I would have to use a router with the modem, which
I don't have don't want to do. So is it possible to use the modem in
bridge mode with pppoe and not use a router? If so, it seems like it
might be better this way because then I will probably be able to see
the transfer rate on my toolbar. But then it might be faster using
DHCP. Does using the modem in router mode protect the computer better
than using it in bridge mode?

Anyway this is still pretty confusing to me, so I hope I'll be able
to figure it out in the next couple of weeks.

Thanks for the help so far,

connection I don't even understand how the browsers, etc. know how to
use it. And this is after reading the docs, searching Google and the
Debian list, etc. Is there a good step by step guide somewhere?

there are several versions of DSL. The most common uses what is known as
discrete multitone modulation. The spectrum of the cable is divided
into frequency bins. The bottom-most bin is used for POTS (Plain old
telephone service). The upper bins are divided into several hundred
channels, some of which are used for transmitting-Upstream and the rest
are used for receiving-Downstream. Regularly the downstream channels
exceed the upstream channels giving rise to the term Asymmetric in ADSL.
In each bin the spectrum is used much like that of a conventional modem.
However prior to the transmission of actual data the DSL modem at the
customer's premesis and that at the ISP (usually called a DSLAM) exchange
signals in an attempt to maximize the bit rate in each bin (independently).
Once the bit rate is established control is passed to a higher level
protocol, usually the Point-to Point protocol (PPP) which provides the
connectivity and in some cases authentication (logon) and info exchange
(e.g. DNS, default router). Hope this helps.

This is interesting. I just wish I was a little closer to getting
everything configured correctly.

Thank you and thanks to everyone else that has tried to help.

To use pppoe your DSL modem must be in transparent mode, which is

I have no idea what that means, but I'll give DHCP a try if you know

icewm window titles

I just upgraded to debian sarge which uses icewm 1.2.20+21pre1-3.

The problem I'm having with icewm is the window titles switch

For instance, when mutt loads the editor mcedit the title of
the window is changed to 'mc - host:/path' and it doesn't change
back to the original title. I use MC a lot and now I can no longer
tell which applications are in use by looking at the toolbar.

Is there anyway to keep the original title of the window?

If not, is there a similar window manager that works better?

I installed a new drive a few weeks ago, so I'm thinking that might be
the cause?

This is the second time it's happened today. The first time I lost the
partition and I'll probably lose this one, but I have backups on a
second drive. My cdrom also died a couple of days ago, so things seem
to be going from bad to worse.

You could add a mem=256 argument to the kernel. I don't remember
how this would be done with loadlin.

Better try mem=256M instead ... 256 bytes of memory would be painful.
Simply place this argument after the kernel image name on the loadlin
 line.

I just bought a new computer with 256MB of RAM and using Loadlin all
of it showed up without adding mem=256m. So I don't think Loadlin
is the problem unless it's an old version.

Problem solved! After figuring out how to 'grep' every text file on

and running 'update-mime' removed them. Now mutt is back to using

Gnu Midnight Commander (mc or gmc) is alleged to have some data recovery
potential. You might want to investigate this.

Midnight Commander can recover deleted files. The files that can be
recovered are displayed with numbers instead of names, so all you have
to do is undelete and rename.

Generally speaking, file deletion is a pretty definitive act under
 Linux.

There are data recovery firms which specialize in retrieving lost data.
If the data are sufficiently important to you, you may want to get a

Re: Mail/news software

I've looked at most of what is available and the closest thing to
Yarn is the Tin news reader, they're almost identical. For email the
best thing I've found is Mutt. Mutt can be configured with what I
call 'tin style cursor keys' so I can go back and forth between
readers without getting confused. I believe they both have everything
you want except maybe GPG, but the newer versions may have it. I
don't see much need for the GUI multiple windows thing, but you can
run either one of the readers in multiple windows (xterms).

If you ever find anything that works like Yarn or Tin and does both
email and news let me know. :-)

attachments, thread messages, fetch using POP3 and send via SMTP, would
have a GUI that allows multiple windows to be open for composing and

YARN, when used in combination with a SOUP package handler, is much
like that (except for the GUI/multi-window part), but I haven't seen a

Installation - modules?

1999-03-20 Thread Larry Fletcher
When I first installed hamm a few months ago I selected the following
modules to use for a PPP based system:

nls_cp437 umsdos
lp serial psaux
ppp slip

So far I haven't spent much time with it, but I have PPP, lynx, minicom,
and couple of other packages installed and working. Today I reinstalled
hamm on another partition to try another mouse driver and noticed that the
following modules were recommend on a help sheet:

bsd_comp
dummy
slhc
nls_iso8859_1

It sounds like bsd_comp is something I would need even though PPP seems
to be working fine without it, dummy might be needed for diald, slhc
might be required for diald and slip even though I'm not going to use slip
to connect, and I have no idea what nls_iso8859_1 is for.

So what I'm wondering is do I actually need any of these last four modules?
And if so, why?

Change it to:

Where 'qwertyuip' is your password.

You nailed it! It's working again and I'm happy enough about it
not to wonder excessively why it was working before I changed the

I finally found all of the pppconfig files in pppconfig manual and deleted

*Exactly* what did you do? *Exactly* what results did you get?

1) My provider changed its phone number, so I ran pppconfig to change
the phone number and pressed enter on everything else. (I know
that only the phone number was changed, because I use a DOS offline
reader with the same provider and that's all I had to change.)

2) When I ran PON I immediately noticed the following problem with PAP
authentication, so I thought I might have accidentally selected PAP instead
of CHAT when I changed the phone number.

Feb 20 20:36:05 debian pppd[216]: PAP authentication failed

3) I ran pppconfig again and made sure to select CHAT this time and
pressed enter on everything else. But this had no effect, because
when I ran PON again the same PAP authentication message appeared.

I have rerun pppconfig numerous times being extremely careful to enter
everything correctly and I still get the same PAP authentication message.

I tried deleting /etc/ppp/peers/provider in an effort to erase the
defaults and start over, but when I ran pppconfig the defaults were
 still there.

What do you mean by the defaults? The default valuse displayed by
pppconfig are not read from a file. They are generated internally by
pppconfig when the provider files (/etc/chatscripts/provider and
/etc/ppp/peers/provider) either don't exist or don't look right.

I thought pressing enter on all of my previous defaults except for the
change from PAP to CHAT might be causing pppconfig to think that nothing
was changed, so I was trying to get rid of my defaults and start over.

What files should I delete to get pppconfig back to where it was when I
 first installed hamm?

When you first installed hamm the ppp package installed a set of default
files. Pppconfig ignored these and showed you its defaults. It then
replaced the files installed by the ppp package with those it generated
when you answered the questions.

Look in /etc/chatscripts and /etc/ppp/peers for files named 'provider.bak'.
Depending on exactly what you did, these files may contain your data.
Rename each of them from 'provider.bak' to just 'provider' and run
pppconfig again. If you are lucky your old data will come up. If not you
will have to enter it all again.

I'm pretty sure there was only one provider.bak file in /etc/ppp/peers
and I must have accidentally deleted it. But this is not a problem, because
after I deleted all of the pppconfig files reentering my information was easy.

I just have no idea why changing the phone number with pppconfig would
cause a login failure? When I started using Debian a few months ago I
thought pppconfig was the easiest part of the whole installation.

Try starting with the base X stuff, then add things on an
as-needed basis. The X stuff for Debian has been reorganized; see
http://www.debian.org/Lists-Archives/debian-devel-9901/msg01722.html.
This document is helpful no matter which release of Debian you are using,
because it provides a good overview. For a windows manager I have always
used fvwm or fvwm2, but I've seen mention of icewm as a small and fast
(but less configurable) alternative. If you really start running out
of space, consider manually deleting things (bending the Debian rules).
For example, twm comes with xbase in hamm (2.0), but is not needed if
you use fvwm2, icewm, etc.

Do these window managers allow you to cutpaste between windows?
I had planned on just using the Bash shell for awhile, but am finding
that it is inconvenient not having the ability to cutpaste from one
console to another the way I could with DOS and DESQview.

lowmem installation trouble

I've been trying the same thing. So far I have been able to install
Debian Hamm from 1.44 disks using the Installing Debian Linux 2.0
For X86 instructions on the Debian site. But after the installation
is finished the boot disk fails right after it says No mail.

The last two lines on boot-up read:

  Bash: Fork: Cannot allocate memory
  # (at this point the HD sounds like its writing and no commands
   are accepted)

I've tried installing it three times with the same result. I assume
its a memory problem and I can't add more RAM.

Does anyone know if there is an older version of Debian or another
version that will work with a 386 and 4Megs of RAM? (Something I can
get via FTP.)

Thanks,

 boot: [I hit Enter.]
 Loading lowmemrd.bin ...

That's as far as she goes. It hangs there, all night. I
have to hard reboot. Using the resc1440.bin image I get...

 SYSLINUX 1.40-2.1 [etc...]
 Boot failed

Using the lowmemrd.bin image I get...

 [beep]

Nothing at all, no error, and I have to hard reboot. Using
the root.bin image gets me the same result.

Ok, obviously I don't know a whole lot about what I am
doing. Can anyone help me out? I've installed FreeBSD and
Linux before, but always on more modern systems with CDROMs.

 Thanks,
