apt-get distupgrade wants to remove my whole system
This is a resend (I'm not sure mails from my gmail account are reaching the list). I'm running testing and have been happily for the last few months. No real problems, updating every few days by doing an apt-get distupgrade. Yesterday I saw the package upgrade-system in the available list and decided to install it. I installed and ran it, it said it wanted to downgrade 20 packages and remove over a thousand, including 20 essentials, such as apt. Since then no matter what frontend I run - apt-get, aptitude, synaptic, they all want to remove essentially my entire system. I've tried runnning dpkg --forget-available and re-updating my package lists a few times but they always want to remove everything. Has something changed on the servers? or is it the upgrade-system command that has messed up my system? How can I stop this? Is my only option to allow it to remove everything and then reinstall? -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]

apt-move has 'deep emotional' issues
or at least it seems to ;) It wont talk to /var/cache/apt/archives I normally run 'apt-move update' to move all packages to a local mirror. But it no longer does anything. I start it and it says: Updating from local Packages files... Moving files... and thats it, it will sit there for days without any sign of hard disk activity at all, past the initial 10 seconds. If tried a few things to fix it. I tried : moving all the debs to a different directory and changing the package src but its no good. running apt-move local apt-move packages (it updates its packages but wont then move my files) apt-move fsck apt-move move apt-move delete (deleted a few old packages) All of these it seems to do something but then afterward doesnt move any files at all. Re: starting X hangs on network timeout (hosts file ignored)
Ping uses the hosts file but host seems to ignore it. So if the nameserver is not reachable then ping hostname works but host hostname returns 192.168.0.1 connect: Network is unreachable Nameserver not reachable litshi.luna.local A record not found, try again my /etc/hosts has the following lines: 127.0.0.1 localhost 127.0.0.1 litshi.luna.local litshi (I know pointing hostname to 127.0.0.1 is not advised, but its a laptop and has several possible IPs). Any ideas? right you are getting me puzzled now :-) I suppose a bit of fishing is in order what's in /etc/host.conf, it should say 'order hosts, bind' that file tells the sys how to resolve hosts in the network, you want it to check the local hosts file before going to bind also whats in /etc/hostname? It should, at least on my sys, have the hostname of the sys, not the fqdn, just the hostid. If It doesnt use 'hostname litshi' to set it, ignore the fqdn for now, just try with that. If that doesnt work, have you looked at m$ windows recently ;-) If even that doesnt work you could try (dont tell anyone I said this) a reboot, after setting the hostname and entering it into /etc/hosts, the files may just need to be re-read -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. RE: find running in the backgound
Isnt there a command call 'locate' which is simalir to find but about 1000 times faster (search your entire filesys in about 10 seconds) which works by examining the filesys every few hours? could be this which is running find -Original Message- From: Oswald Buddenhagen [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: 25 April 2000 10:04 To: Mike Cook Cc: debian-user@lists.debian.org Subject: Re: find running in the backgound Once a day, I hear my hard drive making a lot of noise, so i ran top and discovered it was find running. What is its purpose and how can I disable it? it's a cron job. edit /etc/cron.daily/* to get rid of it. -- Hi! I'm a .signature virus! RE: Newbie questions, Partisioning
There is no prob with having fat16 after fat32 partitions but using fdisk (windows-dos version) you can only have 2 partitions - logical drives aren't included - i.e. 2 primary or 1 primary and one extended, Linux fdisk I think can have up to 4 primary partitions, you prob could be related to the bios. one thing I have noticed is Linux has problems with partitions after a certain block, not sure which, perhaps someone could enlighten us? also had a diff prob of disk druid - red hat - completely deleting the extended partition upon reboot, including partition I had just installed Linux on, screamed a bit when i realised that!!! -Original Message- From: Brad [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: 25 April 2000 19:46 To: Lowell Voelker Cc: debian-user@lists.debian.org Subject: Re: Newbie questions, Partisioning On Mon, Apr 24, 2000 at 04:21:05AM +0100, Lowell Voelker wrote: There is a rumor around that any Primary Partision after a Fat32 can not be Fat16. Is this true? Not sure about that, but i've seen WinDOS 98 have troubles with two FAT32 primary partitions -- it read C: (hdb1) ok, but D: was a 0 byte drive and E: was hdb2. Changing that second primary to a logical partition (hdb5) gave C:=hdb1 and D:=hdb5 as expected. -- finger for GPG public key.
