[Q] Virtual domains with postfix...
Hi, Can someone give me step by step instructions on how to go about using postfix for virtual domains? I already have something working decently. But have problems when I have a [EMAIL PROTECTED] and [EMAIL PROTECTED] Both these need to point to two entries in /etc/aliases. Thanks. [Q] Setting up a primary DNS server for my domain name on a Debian box...
[Note: Would appreciate if you Cc-ed me on your replies to this thread] Hi, I have never configured bind before. I have a Debian (slink+potato) box. I have bind 8.2.2p3-1 installed on this box. I want this box to be the primary DNS server (the one that is listed in the whois record) for my domain name. The entries for the various things in my domain would be pretty simple. Only one 'A' record for foo.org Everything else would (at the moment) be CNAME records pointing to the A record. I tried following the instructions in the DNS HOWTO. Things work fine when I do a nslookup from the machine which is running bind. But when I do an nslookup remotely (setting this machine that is running bind as the server) all queries time out. Would greatly appreciate step by step instructions (or pointers to step by step instructions) on how to set up a primary domain name server on Debian. Thanks a lot. Thaths -- English. Pfft. Can it be that your upstream router blocks access to your nameserver port? To verify this you could configure your firewall to log access to nameserver/UDP. *If* your upstream router properly routes nameserver requests you would see something in your kernel log. [Fwd: Debian specific Partition problme]
Please respond directly to Nagarjuna Thanks. S. Original Message Subject: Debian specific Partition problme Date: Tue, 16 Nov 1999 10:18:06 +0530 (IST) From: Nagarjuna G. [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] CC: Sudhakar Chandrasekharan [EMAIL PROTECTED] Dear Manoj/Sudhakar I have posted this query earlier on the linux-india list, I found no replies. I am very curious to know the reason for this behaviour of fdisk program. Could you find out this from your friends at debian.org about it? the problme is: I have encountered a peculiar problem on a debian (2.1). The system has a 9.1 UltraWide SCSI disk (seagate make). When I do `fdisk' it shows the following: studio:/two# fdisk /dev/sdb The number of cylinders for this disk is set to 8683. There is nothing wrong with that, but this is larger than 1024, and could in certain setups cause problems with: 1) software that runs at boot time (e.g., LILO) 2) booting and partitioning software from other OSs (e.g., DOS FDISK, OS/2 FDISK) Command (m for help): p Disk /dev/sdb: 64 heads, 32 sectors, 8683 cylinders Units = cylinders of 2048 * 512 bytes Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System /dev/sdb18 8676 8875912+ f Win95 Extended (LBA) Partition 1 does not end on cylinder boundary: phys=(1023, 254, 63) should be (1023, 63, 32) /dev/sdb58 965 979933+ 83 Linux native /dev/sdb6 965 1083 120456 82 Linux swap /dev/sdb7 1083 4903 3911796 83 Linux native /dev/sdb8 4903 8676 3863601 83 Linux native As you notice the number of cylinders are shown to be 8693, too large to make lilo work. Obviously I failed to make the machine boot linux, except through a boot floppy. Otherwise there are no problems during running. However, what surprised me was when I tried (on the same harddisk) using SuSe 6.2, and Redhat 6.0, the out put of fdisk shows entirely different. They show only 1106 cylinders. This time lilo also works fine. I thought the fdisk program is same across different distros. Why does this happen? Any clues? Nagarjuna -- Nagarjuna G. Compiling ATA/66 support into the kernel?
How do I compile ATA/66 support into the kernel? And what version of the kernel should I use? [MTA] Problems using sendmail and exim...

printout being chopped off...
Hi, I have an Epson Color Stylus 640. When I print 2-uped pages, a bit of the page (on the left hand side) gets chopped off. I am printing to 'letter' paper. Here is what I tried: * Installed slink's lprng, gs (not gs-alladin), enscript, psutils and magicfilter. * Ran /usr/sbin/magicfilterconfig and chose stylus800, stylus_color_360dpi and stylus_color_720dpi as filters. * When I print from Netscape Communicator using lpr -Pprinter_name, the output is fine. * When I try to use print from Netscape Communicator using 'psnup -c -Pletter -n 2 | lpr -Pprinter_name' I see that a little bit (about 2 characters) gets chopped off on the left hand side (when seen length-wise). It is not that the printed area bleeds off the end of the paper. There is a definite non-printable border. It is at the edge of the border and the printable area that the bleed occurs. * Tried printing from command line using 'enscript -2r -G -Mletter -Pprinter_name foo.txt'. Same problem. * Installed lprng, enscript and psutils from slink. Installed gs-aladdin and apsfilter from potato. * Configured apsfilter for uniprint driver for Epson Color Stylus 600. * Tried printing with psnup and enscript. Same problem as before. I guess I need to somehow change the printable area parameter for papersize letter. How do I do this in a system-wide way? Thanks. I got the libc5 version from the supported directory. I am using tcsh. The seg fault seems to be in libc.so.5. Do the following and send me the output via personal email (do not mail the mailing list) - $ strace /usr/local/netscape/netscape One thing you could try is moving the ~/.netscape directory out of the way and starting communicator again. If it starts fine, you can slowly start moving files from your old ~/.netscape to your new ~/.netscape one by one and see when the seg fault starts happening. Thaths -- Homer: Oh Lisa! [Off Topic] Ideas on providing low cost email access to schools
[I would appreciate it if you Cc-ed your replies to this thread to me] #include offtopic.h Folks, I am planning on writing an article for a computer magazine in India [1]. This magazine is big supporter of Linux in India. I thought of writing an article on how high schools and colleges with non-dedicated connections to each other could provide basic internet access [2] to its students. Basic Idea ^^^ The schools will be connected to each other with hubs in the various regions. These hubs typically would have dedicated connections (leased lines). The schools have departmental LANs with windows (3.1 and '95) machines. Basically, the departments will be providing the students with accounts on their POP/SMTP (Linux) servers. The students would use a POP/SMTP capable client to connect to the server and download and upload their emails. Outgoing Mail ^ The Linux machine will queue all the outgoing mail. This Linux machine will then dial another school or hub (via. PPP) during the off-peak hours and send out the emails from the queue. The hubs which have dedicated connections will then take care of sending out the emails to the recipients. Incoming Mail ^ An email bound for foo.edu.in will reach the hub (bar.net.in) and will be queued there. When foo.edu.in connects to bar.net.in to send out outgoing email, bar will instruct foo to download the incoming email. Questions ^ 1. Has something like this been implemented elsewhere? It would be nice if I had more actual technical details on how this has been implemented. 2. I have a pretty good knowledge of how to take care of the outgoing mail scenario. I am a bit hazy on how the hub would queue mails coming to foo. How can the MTA be configured in bar to wait for foo to connect? 3. Are there out of the box solutions available? Do any of the MTAs support this kind of stuff? I don't want to write custom scripts. I prefer a solution that needs minimal maintenance. 4. I want to stay with TCP/IP. uucp is not a solution for me. Footnotes [1] PCQuest - http://www.pcquest.com/ [2] I am defining basic internet access as email for starters. If a school has a dedicated internet connection this will include NNTP, FTP and HTTP access. Thanks in advance for your input. Thaths -- Homer: Oh Lisa! Re: Communicator Installation
Hi, I'm trying to install Communicator 4.5 and can't get anywhere. I downloaded the file with Lynx from the netscape ftp site. The file was saved in /root/communicator-v45-export.x86-unknown-linux2.0.tar.gz # cd /root # tar zxvf communicator-v45-export.x86-unknown-linux2.0.tar.gz this will extract the files into a directory called communicator-... or something like that. # cd communicator* # ./ns-install When asked about where to install say /usr/local/netscape The files will be installed under that directory. # cd /usr/local/bin Create a symbolic link from the bin directory tot he actual location of the executable. # ln -s /usr/local/netscape/netscape netscape You can launch communicator from /usr/loca/bin/netscape I'm thinking the file shouldn't be in /root when I try to install it, maybe it doesn't matter? I tried moving it with mv 'file name' /usr and I get a not valid command, another time I just got the root prompt # back. I do a search locate communicator and it still shows the file is in /root/ comm The final execuatable is not called communicator. It is called netscape. Re: printing from netscape
How do you print to a remote printer from netscape? When I click on the print button, I get a screen with the print command defaulting to lpd. Are you sure that the print command says lpd? It should say lpr. lpr is the client that sends a page to the printer. lpd is the daemon. i.e. the server. Is there some other place I need to specify which printer in my printcap I want to print to? I've got my printcap setup with a couple of different printers, named by their host name. If I just click PRINT when taking the defaults, it gives me an error: lpd: Fatal error - another print spooler is using TCP printer port, possibly lpd process '139' Change the print command to lpr -Pprinter_name. I am assuming that you have set up the printcap entries OK. Sidenote: Netscape Navigator / Communicator generates postscript of the page that needs to be printed and passes it on to the print command. This lets you make nice and interesting things like printing back-to-back and 2-uped pages using psnup etc. Thaths -- See, Marge. xemacs-mule-canna-wnn doesn't support korean-hangul input method?
Hi, I am extremely new to this whole concept of input systems and double byte characters. I am trying to set up my machine and an eXceed client so that a user of my machine can use xemacs to edit Korean documents (encoded in EUC-KR). Here is what I did - 1. Installed xfnt* 2. Installed xemacs20-mule-canna-wnn 3. Started xfs on my machine 4. Installed eXceed on the user's machine and configured it to read fonts from my machine (foo:7100) . 5. start xemacs on the user's machine and - (a) 'Mule'--'Set Language environment'--'Korean' (b) 'Mule'--'Select input method' The status line comes with a dialog - Select input method (default korean-hangul): (c) I simply type enter to accept the default and see the error message No valid input method is specified. (d) I ignore this error and open an HTML file that is in Korean. The korean characters are displayed just fine. (e) 'Mule'--'Toggle input method' and see the error message Can't activate input method 'korean-hangul' What other packages do I need to get Korean input working on my machine? I am able to get japanese working pretty good (as far as I can tell. I don't speak / read / write japanese or korean). Thanks. Thaths -- No, I can't. This is my cause. [Q] backspace problems connecting to XDM via eXceed
Hi, I am running xdm on my machine. When I log into the machine on the console, my xterm's backspace is working fine. But when another user logs into my machine using eXceed on NT (using XDMCP-broadcast), backspace does not work. What resources / files should I modify to map backspace to ^H? Here are snippets from some of my config files - /etc/X11/Xresources ^^^ XTerm*termName: xterm *VT100*backarrowKey: false *VT100.Translations: #override KeyDelete: string(\033[3~)\n\ KeyHome: string(\033OH)\n\ KeyEnd: string(\033OF) I *really* prefer setting termName to xterm. $ diff /etc/X11/xdm/Xresources /etc/X11/xdm/Xresources_0 1c1 ! /etc/X11/xdm/Xresources --- ! /etc/X11/xdm/Xresources_0 3c3 ! X resources used by xdm sessions --- ! X resources used by xdm sessions on display :0 I don't think it is my ~/.Xresources that gives me proper backspacing on the console. When I log into my machine using eXceed remotely I have the same backspace problem. If the remote user just uses eXceed to open an xterm (and not an XDM session), the backspacing works fine. [pppd] error: link not 8-bit clean
I installed Hamm on a machine at home. The installation went perfectly. I next tried configuring a dial up connection to get into my ISP (Netcom - http://www.netcom.com/). Here is the story of my experiments with pppd and associated applications - 1. I first tried dunc to create a new connection. I created two profile. One with PAP authentication and the other with chat. When I tried to connect to Netcom, both of the profiles failed. I, unfortunately, don't remember the error message. 2. I now tried pppconfig. Again created two profiles. PAP and chat. Both fail. syslog says that the dialin is working fine (as far as I can see). During the LCP phase the connection is disconnected after an error message is printed (something along the lines of receiving link is not 8-bit clean). There is some info about this error message in /usr/doc/ppp/FAQ I could not make sense of it. 3. I read the man pages for pppd and chat and hacked a couple of scripts and tried them out. Same problem as '2'. 4. I tried kppp. In kppp's case the dialer calls the ISP first. pppd is started only after the dial-in phase has completed. Shouldn't pppd actually start first and invoke chat to make the connection? When pppd kicks in it tries to talk to the modem. It fails because it is unable to detect CARRIER. 4. I installed xisp from unstable along with libforms0.88 I like the interface. When I say 'Connect' pppd starts fine. Then chat tries to dial out but fails without any message. My setup - hamm (CheapBytes CD). /dev/ttyS2 is a Zoom K56 modem. I try ATZ, ATDTnumber. And now for the questions - * Does someone have a working bunch of scripts for connecting to Netcom? I'd really appreciate it if you could give them to. * Does Netcom use PAP / CHAP? * I also want the ability to dial into work. Dial into work uses SecureID. Are there any dial-up scripts that make using SecureID easier. I did take a look at /usr/doc/ppp/examples/secure-card but could not get it work. Making XDM use *my* window manager
Hi, This is most probably a frequently asked question. I poked around the Debian documentation and am unable to find the information (probably because I looked at the wrong place). How do I make xdm start a preferred window manager on a per-user basis? I want to leave the system-wide default preferred window manager (in /etc/X11/window-managers) to be Fvwm95. [hamm] backspace not working in bash in xterm
[This mail had bounced back once. Hopefully, it should work this time.] I am running a hamm system with the latest updates. For the past few weeks ncurses-bin and ncurses-base upgrades were failing because /usr/share/terminfo already existed. I tried 'stty erase backspace'. But all my computer does is beep when I click the backspace (or delete) button. Re: [Q] KDE for libc6. motif for libc6
I asked the same question a short time ago and got no answe. But here are a couple of ideas: a) compile it yourself. The package maintainer gave me a bit of a hint that, if one wants to go this route, then it would be helpful to install a package that can be found under 'ftp.debs.fuller.edu:/debs/kde4debian_0.3_all.deb' - this provides Debian files in addition to the standard KDE installation. I am really not comfortable doing this. Mainly because I haven't learn to use deb-make to include the proper entries for the menu items. b) get the libc6 RedHat packages, convert to .deb's and install those. Question. After the upgrade, I am unable to log into my machine with a username in YP. $ cat /etc/passwd ...some stuff... +::0:0::: $ cat /etc/nsswitch.conf passwd: db files group: db files shadow: db files hosts: files dns networks: files protocols: db files services: db files ethers: db files rpc:db files netgroup: db files $ ypcat passwd|grep thaths thaths:snip:8022:690:Sudhakar Chandrasekharan:/u/thaths:/bin/bash When I am able to ypcat and grep my password entry, why am I unable to login with this username? I have changed some stuff in nsswitch.conf [possibly adding nis to the passed entry or something like that. nsswitch.conf did not have a man page]. I got back to work this morning and tried to log in as root and login failed. Could not log in with a username from NIS either. I decided (unwisely, it seems) to reboot. Upon reboot the various daemons in /etc/init.d/ are started and the machine seems (I say seems because I did not wait long enough to see if it really does) to hang while starting postgres (under /usr/local). As I see it, here are my options - * Try to see if the boot sequence is really hanging by giving it enouch time. If it manages to proceed with the rest of the boot sequence and gets me into the login prompt, I have to try my luck with loggin in as root. * If I am unable to log in as root, how do I fix what I did to nsswitch.conf? I was sensible enough to backup the old file before making the changes. I am unable to locate my emergency disk (or whatever it is called). Can I use the Debian 1.3 distribution's installation boot disks, mount /dev/sdb3 as root and fix the problem and then try rebooting with my regular custom boot disk? How? * Ideally, I'd prefer booting up into NT and being able to access the ext2 partition. [fvwm2] Desktops, Pagers and Backgrounds etc.
I use fvwm2 as my window manager. I want to do a very simple thing but am confused by the terminology in the man pages. I launch FvwmPager on startup. Snippets from my /etc/X11/fvwm2/post.hook - # I want 9 seperate desks to work on DeskTopSize 3x3 # FvwmPager Customization * FvwmPagerDeskColor 0 steelblue * FvwmPagerDeskColor 1 black * FvwmPagerDeskColor 2 deepblue # FvwmBacker Customization *FvwmBackerDesk 0 -solid steelblue *FvwmBackerDesk 1 -solid blue you get the idea I also launch FvwmButtons on startup. My FvwmPager is swallowed by FvwmButtons. What I am trying is to give each of my 9 desktops (I switch between these using the FvwmPager in FvwmButtons) it's own background color. Once I get this working, I want to match the backgrounds in my FvwmPager against my different desks. All I get is an ugly greenish blue background for (get this) *all* the 9 desks. libc5 - libc6 Upgrade Roadmap?
I read the mini HOWTO and reports in this mailing list about unstable being stable enough. My machine is kind of a production server. The world would not end if it goes down for a day or so. But still it is important to have it up and running ASAP. I am planning on upgrading to hamm later today. I have a few questions before I set off - * I am downloading the entire hamm binary-i386, contrib and non-free tree to a directory (actually, my home directory) on an NFS server. Is there a possibility that NFS might stop working during the upgrade process? * Could some kind soul who has gone through the upgrade process give me a roadmap? The Mini-HOWTO, though useful, does not provide information on how to upgrade the other packages once I have done the basic upgrading. Can I start using dselect after following the instructions in the mini-HOWTO? * I have compiled and installed some packages under /usr/local/ (pgsql, ssh, socks etc.). I guess I have compiled these with libc5. Is there a possibility that they would stop working when I upgrade to libc6? * I am running something 1.3.1.r4 Should I get hold of the libc5 libraries (from gate.net) that don't conflict with libc6 and upgrade after installing these libraries? Your help would be greatly appreciated. make-kpkg - minor irritant compiling custom kernel
Hi, I'm trying to compile a custom kernel (2.0.31) for my machine using make-kpkg (3.01). I came across a minor irritant. Here is what I do - 1. make config|xconfig|menuconfig 2. Edit drivers/sound/local.h and add #define DESKPROXL (my machine. drivers/sound/Readme.cards asks me to add this line after make config. 3. make-kpkg -revision Custom.X.Y kernel_image To my irritation, make-kpkg runs make config again in some kind of automated mode. And drivers/sound/local.h is re-created without the #define for DESKPROXL. Because of make-kpkg running make config again, I am unable to use (without some emlementary hacking of the Makefile in drivers/sound/) make-kpkg for creating custom kernels. Is make-kpkg supposed to behave this way? Thaths -- It was a tumultuous time for a nation. The clear beverage craze gave us all a reason to live. This installation shell script will examine your system and ask you questions to determine how the perl5 package should be installed. If you get stuck on a question, you may use a ! shell escape to start a subshell or execute a command. Many of the questions will have default answers in square brackets; typing carriage return will give you the default. On some of the questions which ask for file or directory names you are allowed to use the ~name construct to specify the login directory belonging to name, even if you don't have a shell which knows about that. Questions where this is allowed will be marked (~name ok). [Type carriage return to continue] The prompter used in this script allows you to use shell variables and backticks in your answers. You may use $1, $2, etc... to refer to the words in the default answer, as if the default line was a set of arguments given to a script shell. This means you may also use $* to repeat the whole default line, so you do not have to re-type everything to add something to the default. Everytime there is a substitution, you will have to confirm. If there is an error (e.g. an unmatched backtick), the default answer will remain unchanged and you will be prompted again. If you are in a hurry, you may run 'Configure -d'. This will bypass nearly all the questions and use the computed defaults (or the previous answers if there was already a config.sh file). Type 'Configure -h' for a list of options. You may also start interactively and then answer ' -d' at any prompt to turn on the non-interactive behavior for the remainder of the execution. [Type carriage return to continue] Much effort has been expended to ensure that this shell script will run on any Unix system. If despite that it blows up on yours, your best bet is to edit Configure and run it again. If you can't run Configure for some reason, you'll have to generate a config.sh file by hand. Whatever problems you have, let me ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) know how I blew it. This installation script affects things in two ways: 1) it may do direct variable substitutions on some of the files included in this kit. 2) it builds a config.h file for inclusion in C programs. You may edit any of these files as the need arises after running this script. If you make a mistake on a question, there is no easy way to back up to it currently. The easiest thing to do is to edit config.sh and rerun all the SH files. Configure will offer to let you do this before it runs the SH files. [Q] problems with TimeZone, Clock xntp
Hi, I have xntp installed. My system should get the correct time when it boots up. But I see that my xclock shows is ahead by an hour. I suspect this has something to do with the fact that I had problems running tzconfig. I run tzconfig and choose 'US time zones' in the first screen. Now I try to choose 'Pacific'. But 'Pacific' always conflicts with 'Pacific-New Samoa' so I get struck at this prompt. To break out of the loop, I choose Mountain. Then I edit /etc/timezone and change it to Pacific physically. However, when I run date, I get the following as the output - $ date Fri Nov 14 16:45:12 MST 1997 I guess 'MST' refers to Mountain Standard Time. It has worked fine for some time now in the 2.1.x series, so I suppose the 2.0.31 support is the latest. Installation of the daemon is fairly easy, just let it install, and make your maps /etc/auto.master with everything sensible. Then, launch the daemon and here you go! I upgraded to 1.2 by just gradually installing all the 1.2 packages, but now I have realised the error of one partition and I will be installing 1.3 from a clean hard disk on to several partitions - with /home and /usr/local backed up and reinstalled of course. The same in my case too. Ideally, I would like to have seperate partitions for /, /usr, /usr/local, /home and /root. One wants to maintain a clean machine. ;-) Another thing. The more installs and re-installs that one does, the more one learns in the process - IMO. I have had hours of bliss (and learning) installing Debian on all kinds of machines. He needs hardware, connectivity, or friends more than a book. A complete book would be a convenience to me, but I would rather spend the money on hardware. I have a lot of 'obsolete' hardware that is still productive. I can't say the same for most of the software and books that I purchased. If I had spent the money at a good restaurant, I would at least have some good memories for it. I have found that all I needed for Installation and Getting started with Debian are - * The Debian Installation instructions printed out * A book like 'The Linux Bible' which has all the HOWTOs and mini HOWTOs. In my case I had only one machine on my desktop and it happened to be the machine on which I was installing Debian. So my normal channel for surfing the web was cut off till I could get my box on net net. If that were not the case, one does not need the HOWTOs. Has anybody tried to convert Matt Welsh to Debian? If he starts using Debian I think he will change his excellent 'Installation and Getting Started' to deal with Debian instead of (shudder) Slackware. ;-) Sudhakar -- I'm all for progress. Re: Netscape uses SOCKS host for local servers
Kirk Hilliard wrote: How do I get Netscape to not use a SOCKS host for machines in my local domain? I am running Mozilla/3.01Gold (X11; I; Linux 2.0.27 i586) on my Debian 1.2 box, which is on a network behind a (SOCKS 4) firewall. After I set Options/Network Preferences/Proxies to Manual Proxy Configuration and filled in the SOCKS Host field it had no problems getting through to the outside world. However, it goes through the SOCKS host even to contact local http servers. (This is a problem because the SOCKS host is in a different building to which I am connected with only 10Kbps pipe.) I set the No Proxy for field to the local domain name but this had no effect. Mozilla/3.0Gold (WinNT; 1), similarly set up to use the SOCKS host, connects to local http servers directly, even without an entry in the No Proxy for field. It looks like the 'No Proxy For' field does not accept widcards. So saying No Proxy for *.foo.com would still take you to bar.foo.com through your configured proxy (in your case, the SOCKS 4 host). One solution I can think of is using the 'Automatic Proxy Config' feature. [Q] update-menus broken in 1.3?
I have spent the last couple of hours trying to customize my fvwm2 setup. I basically want to add stuff to the default menus that comes with Debian. I tried the following - * Moved /usr/lib/menu/default/vim to /etc/menu/vim and ran update-menus. Then quit X and restarted it. Don't find vim under /Apps/Editors (which is where it is supposed to put in). * Moved /usr/lib/menu/default/vim to ~/.menu/vim and did the same as above. Still no vim in my Apps/Editors * Moved /usr/lib/menu/default/vim to /usr/lib/menu/vim (I know. I am not supposed to do that. But just wanted to find out if update-menu was broken). Ran the update scripts and restarted X. Still to no avail. What am I missing? Sudhakar -- Jesus saves! But wouldn't it be better if he has invested? Don't find vim under /Apps/Editors (which is where it is supposed to put in). Do you have the vim package installed? I doubt it. If you look at /etc/menu/vim, it probably starts with ?package(vim): which means that unless package vim is installed, this menu entry will be ignored. Oops! Forgot to mention that. I have installed the latest beta version of vim under /usr/local/bin. To add local stuff, try using ?package(menu): at the front of the line in themenu file. Since the menu package is of course installed, the menu item will show up. (There are probably better ways to do this..) That worked. As you said, there *should* be another way to specify local packages. Though I can understand why update-menus does not add an item if the package is not installed. Another question. I know this might be a FAQ. If I want to install a package that is not part of the Debian distribution, how do I go about it? I think there are two scenarios here - * foo.tar.gz contains the binaries, libs etc. * foo.tar.gz contains the source. Ie. I have to compile the program before I install it. You're doing it correctly, ideally all programs not installed from debian (or redhat or slackware with alien) packages should be put under /usr/local.
