[Q] Virtual domains with postfix...

2000-02-17 Thread Sudhakar Chandrasekharan
Hi,

Can someone give me step by step instructions on how to go about using
postfix for virtual domains? I already have something working decently.
But have problems when I have a [EMAIL PROTECTED] and [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Both these need to point to two entries in /etc/aliases.

Thanks.

From the above log it seems as if everything goes right (but I'm no bind

It turns out the firewall in front of my remote machine was blocking UDP

[Q] Setting up a primary DNS server for my domain name on a Debian box...

1999-11-17 Thread Sudhakar Chandrasekharan
[Note: Would appreciate if you Cc-ed me on your replies to this thread]

Hi,

I have never configured bind before. I have a Debian (slink+potato) box.
I have bind 8.2.2p3-1 installed on this box.

I want this box to be the primary DNS server (the one that is listed in the
whois record) for my domain name. The entries for the various things in my
domain would be pretty simple. Only one 'A' record for foo.org Everything
else would (at the moment) be CNAME records pointing to the A record.

I tried following the instructions in the DNS HOWTO. Things work fine when
I do a nslookup from the machine which is running bind. But when I do an
nslookup remotely (setting this machine that is running bind as the server)
all queries time out.

Would greatly appreciate step by step instructions (or pointers to step by
step instructions) on how to set up a primary domain name server on Debian.

Thanks a lot.

Can it be that your upstream router blocks access to your nameserver port? To
verify this you could configure your firewall to log access to nameserver/UDP.
*If* your upstream router properly routes nameserver requests you would see
 something in your kernel log.

Did some more debugging. I stopped named and launched it off the command
like like so:

# named -d 1 -f

[Lots of info deleted]

Dear Manoj/Sudhakar
I have posted this query earlier on the linux-india list, I found no
replies.
I am very curious to know the reason for this behaviour of fdisk program.
Could you find out this from your friends at debian.org about it?
the problme is:

I have encountered a peculiar problem on a debian (2.1). The system
has a 9.1 UltraWide SCSI disk (seagate make). When I do `fdisk' it
shows the following:

studio:/two# fdisk /dev/sdb

The number of cylinders for this disk is set to 8683.
There is nothing wrong with that, but this is larger than 1024,
and could in certain setups cause problems with:
1) software that runs at boot time (e.g., LILO)
2) booting and partitioning software from other OSs
   (e.g., DOS FDISK, OS/2 FDISK)

Command (m for help): p

Disk /dev/sdb: 64 heads, 32 sectors, 8683 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 2048 * 512 bytes

Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/sdb18 8676 8875912+ f Win95 Extended (LBA)
Partition 1 does not end on cylinder boundary:
 phys=(1023, 254, 63) should be (1023, 63, 32)
/dev/sdb58 965 979933+ 83 Linux native
/dev/sdb6 965 1083 120456 82 Linux swap
/dev/sdb7 1083 4903 3911796 83 Linux native
/dev/sdb8 4903 8676 3863601 83 Linux native

As you notice the number of cylinders are shown to be 8693, too large to
make lilo work. Obviously I failed to make the machine boot linux, except
through a boot floppy. Otherwise there are no problems during running.

However, what surprised me was when I tried (on the same harddisk) using
SuSe 6.2, and Redhat 6.0, the out put of fdisk shows entirely different.
They show only 1106 cylinders. This time lilo also works fine.

I thought the fdisk program is same across different distros.
Why does this happen? Any clues?

Nagarjuna

Compiling ATA/66 support into the kernel?

1999-11-04 Thread Sudhakar Chandrasekharan
How do I compile ATA/66 support into the kernel? And what version of the
kernel should I use? The slink boot floppies have 2.0.36 and this kernel
is not currently recogonizing my ide2 and ide3 interfaces.

Here is my setup:

Abit BP6 MoBo.
128M PC100 SDRAM
2 * 466MHz Celeron PPGA

ide0 (ATA/33) Matshita ATAPI CDROM (master)
ide1 (ATA/33) nothing
ide2 (ATA/66) Western Digital 20.5 G HDD (supports ATA/66)
ide3 (ATA/66) nothing

scsi0 Tekram 390U Ultra Wide II card (ncr53x875E)
sda Quantum 9.1G HDD

Another strange problem I have been having. When I install slink (on
/dev/sda) the ncr SCSI controller is detected fine. No SCSI errors even
when doing a lot of disk I/O. But the kernel is UP. When I compile a
custom kernel (2.0.36 or 2.2.13) for SMP with support for ncr53c8xx and /
or sym53c8xx I keep getting time-out messages from the scsi driver like the
following whenever I do a lot of disk I/O (like an apt-get upgrade pointing

[MTA] Problems using sendmail and exim...

1999-06-23 Thread Sudhakar Chandrasekharan

I run a couple of mailing lists that get pretty decent traffic. I used to
use Exim as my MTA. I came across a pretty strage problem using Exim a
couple of weeks ago. Mails to cyberspace.org started bouncing. I somehow
managed to exchange a few emails with one of the admins of this service and
they adviced me to move to a different MTA.

I installed sendmail. Stragely, once I installed sendmail I noticed that
any email to the vsnl.net.in domain started bouncing. One of the mailing
lists I run is the Linux-india mailing list. Many people in the
vsnl.net.in domain are subscribed to this list.

I ran a couple of tests and the results are as following:

OS: Debian 2.1 (hamm)
sendmail: 8.9.3-3
exim: 2.05-1

Your EHLO is broken. That host probably requires a fully qualified domain
 name. www.what?

Just www will probably not work. This is LIKELY due to your /etc/hosts

 Try

 ip-address fully-qualified-name hostname

 1.2.3.4 myhost.mydomain.com myhost

My /etc/hosts used to have:

printout being chopped off...

1999-05-11 Thread Sudhakar Chandrasekharan
Hi,

I have an Epson Color Stylus 640. When I print 2-uped pages, a bit of the
page (on the left hand side) gets chopped off. I am printing to 'letter'
paper.

Here is what I tried:

* Installed slink's lprng, gs (not gs-alladin), enscript, psutils and
magicfilter.
* Ran /usr/sbin/magicfilterconfig and chose stylus800, stylus_color_360dpi
and stylus_color_720dpi as filters.
* When I print from Netscape Communicator using lpr -Pprinter_name, the
output is fine.
* When I try to use print from Netscape Communicator using 'psnup -c
-Pletter -n 2 | lpr -Pprinter_name' I see that a little bit (about 2
characters) gets chopped off on the left hand side (when seen
length-wise). It is not that the printed area bleeds off the end of the
paper. There is a definite non-printable border. It is at the edge of the
border and the printable area that the bleed occurs.

How to create /dev/eth*?

1999-03-18 Thread Sudhakar Chandrasekharan
I recently got a DSL connection at home. When I first installed Linux in
this machine at home it did not have an ethernet card. I used to use ppp
to connect to the net. This machine is running slink from the mid-feb
time-frame.

I copied over /etc/init.d/network from another Debian box and edited the
IP, GATEWWAY etc. parts. I notice that I do not have /dev/eth*. How do I
create these /dev/eth* entries?

Plug:

Brad in Kingston technologies' tech support line was really helpful. I
called Kingston expecting the I'm sorry. We do not support Linux
response. I asked Brad what chipset theit KNE110/TX PCI ethernet cards
were based on. He immediately pulled up a URL which talks about Linux
support for this card (http://cesdis.gsfc.nasa.gov/linux/drivers/pnic.html)
and emailed it to me.

ircd. I made some cursory changes in /etc/ircd/ircd.*

1. From the little that I have read I understand that
/usr/lib/ircd/bin/dancer is ideal for me. Is this correct?

2. At the moment ircd is started off /etc/inet.d I want to start it as

3. What are the things that I *must do* before running my server?

Do the following and send me the output via personal email (do not mail

One thing you could try is moving the ~/.netscape directory out of the

start moving files from your old ~/.netscape to your new ~/.netscape one
by one and see when the seg fault starts happening.

[Off Topic] Ideas on providing low cost email access to schools

1998-12-29 Thread Sudhakar Chandrasekharan
[I would appreciate it if you Cc-ed your replies to this thread to me]

#include offtopic.h

Folks,

I am planning on writing an article for a computer magazine in India
[1]. This magazine is big supporter of Linux in India. I thought of
writing an article on how high schools and colleges with non-dedicated
connections to each other could provide basic internet access [2] to its
students.

Basic Idea
^^^
The schools will be connected to each other with hubs in the various
regions. These hubs typically would have dedicated connections
(leased lines). The schools have departmental LANs with windows (3.1
and '95) machines. Basically, the departments will be providing the
students with accounts on their POP/SMTP (Linux) servers. The students
would use a POP/SMTP capable client to connect to the server and
download and upload their emails.

Outgoing Mail
^
The Linux machine will queue all the outgoing mail. This Linux machine
will then dial another school or hub (via. PPP) during the off-peak
hours and send out the emails from the queue. The hubs which have
dedicated connections will then take care of sending out the emails to
the recipients.

Incoming Mail
^
An email bound for foo.edu.in will reach the hub (bar.net.in) and will
be queued there. When foo.edu.in connects to bar.net.in to send out
outgoing email, bar will instruct foo to download the incoming email.

Questions
^
1. Has something like this been implemented elsewhere? It would be nice
if I had more actual technical details on how this has been implemented.

2. I have a pretty good knowledge of how to take care of the outgoing
mail scenario. I am a bit hazy on how the hub would queue mails coming
to foo. How can the MTA be configured in bar to wait for foo to
connect?

3. Are there out of the box solutions available? Do any of the MTAs
support this kind of stuff? I don't want to write custom scripts. I
prefer a solution that needs minimal maintenance.

4. I want to stay with TCP/IP. uucp is not a solution for me.

Footnotes
[1] PCQuest - http://www.pcquest.com/
[2] I am defining basic internet access as email for starters. If a
school has a dedicated internet connection this will include NNTP, FTP
and HTTP access.

Thanks in advance for your input.

Re: Communicator Installation

1998-12-21 Thread Sudhakar Chandrasekharan
Hi, I'm trying to install Communicator 4.5 and can't get anywhere. I
downloaded the file with Lynx from the netscape ftp site. The file was
 saved in /root/communicator-v45-export.x86-unknown-linux2.0.tar.gz

# cd /root
# tar zxvf communicator-v45-export.x86-unknown-linux2.0.tar.gz

this will extract the files into a directory called communicator-... or
something like that.

# cd communicator*
# ./ns-install

When asked about where to install say /usr/local/netscape The files
will be installed under that directory.

# cd /usr/local/bin

Create a symbolic link from the bin directory tot he actual location of
the executable.

# ln -s /usr/local/netscape/netscape netscape

You can launch communicator from /usr/loca/bin/netscape

I'm thinking the file shouldn't be in /root when I try to install it,
maybe it doesn't matter? I tried moving it with mv 'file name' /usr and
I get a not valid command, another time I just got the root prompt #
back. I do a search locate communicator and it still shows the file
 is in /root/ comm

The final execuatable is not called communicator. It is called
netscape.

Re: printing from netscape

1998-12-16 Thread Sudhakar Chandrasekharan
How do you print to a remote printer from netscape? When I click
on the print button, I get a screen with the print command
 defaulting to lpd.

Are you sure that the print command says lpd? It should say lpr. lpr
is the client that sends a page to the printer. lpd is the daemon.
i.e. the server.

Is there some other place I need to specify which printer in my
printcap I want to print to? I've got my printcap setup with a
couple of different printers, named by their host name. If I
just click PRINT when taking the defaults, it gives me an error:
lpd: Fatal error - another print spooler is using TCP printer
 port, possibly lpd process '139'

Change the print command to lpr -Pprinter_name. I am assuming that you
have set up the printcap entries OK.

Sidenote: Netscape Navigator / Communicator generates postscript of the
page that needs to be printed and passes it on to the print command.
This lets you make nice and interesting things like printing
back-to-back and 2-uped pages using psnup etc.

xemacs-mule-canna-wnn doesn't support korean-hangul input method?

1998-10-22 Thread Sudhakar Chandrasekharan
Hi,

I am extremely new to this whole concept of input systems and double
byte characters. I am trying to set up my machine and an eXceed client
so that a user of my machine can use xemacs to edit Korean documents
(encoded in EUC-KR).

Here is what I did -

1. Installed xfnt*
2. Installed xemacs20-mule-canna-wnn
3. Started xfs on my machine
4. Installed eXceed on the user's machine and configured it to read
fonts from my machine (foo:7100) .
5. start xemacs on the user's machine and -
(a) 'Mule'--'Set Language environment'--'Korean'
(b) 'Mule'--'Select input method'
The status line comes with a dialog -
Select input method (default korean-hangul):
(c) I simply type enter to accept the default and see the error message
No valid input method is specified.
(d) I ignore this error and open an HTML file that is in Korean. The
korean characters are displayed just fine.
(e) 'Mule'--'Toggle input method' and see the error message Can't
activate input method 'korean-hangul'

What other packages do I need to get Korean input working on my
machine? I am able to get japanese working pretty good (as far as I can
tell. I don't speak / read / write japanese or korean).

Thanks.

[Q] backspace problems connecting to XDM via eXceed

1998-10-15 Thread Sudhakar Chandrasekharan
Hi,

I am running xdm on my machine. When I log into the machine on the
console, my xterm's backspace is working fine. But when another user
logs into my machine using eXceed on NT (using XDMCP-broadcast),
backspace does not work. What resources / files should I modify to map
backspace to ^H?

Here are snippets from some of my config files -

/etc/X11/Xresources
^^^
XTerm*termName: xterm
*VT100*backarrowKey: false
*VT100.Translations: #override KeyDelete: string(\033[3~)\n\
   KeyHome: string(\033OH)\n\
   KeyEnd: string(\033OF)

I *really* prefer setting termName to xterm.

$ diff /etc/X11/xdm/Xresources /etc/X11/xdm/Xresources_0
1c1
 ! /etc/X11/xdm/Xresources
---
 ! /etc/X11/xdm/Xresources_0
3c3
! X resources used by xdm sessions
---
! X resources used by xdm sessions on display :0

I don't think it is my ~/.Xresources that gives me proper backspacing on
the console. When I log into my machine using eXceed remotely I have
the same backspace problem.

If the remote user just uses eXceed to open an xterm (and not an XDM
session), the backspacing works fine.

made by Rockwell's management. Examine the systel log when you use the
debug option. If the trace shows that the it isw sending the

Can somebody help me get dial up working? I am at my wits end.

[pppd] error: link not 8-bit clean

1998-08-24 Thread Sudhakar Chandrasekharan
I installed Hamm on a machine at home. The installation went perfectly.
I next tried configuring a dial up connection to get into my ISP (Netcom
- http://www.netcom.com/).

Here is the story of my experiments with pppd and associated
applications -

1. I first tried dunc to create a new connection. I created two
profile. One with PAP authentication and the other with chat. When I
tried to connect to Netcom, both of the profiles failed. I,
unfortunately, don't remember the error message.

2. I now tried pppconfig. Again created two profiles. PAP and chat.
Both fail. syslog says that the dialin is working fine (as far as I can
see). During the LCP phase the connection is disconnected after an
error message is printed (something along the lines of receiving link
is not 8-bit clean). There is some info about this error message in
/usr/doc/ppp/FAQ I could not make sense of it.

3. I read the man pages for pppd and chat and hacked a couple of scripts
and tried them out. Same problem as '2'.

4. I tried kppp. In kppp's case the dialer calls the ISP first. pppd
is started only after the dial-in phase has completed. Shouldn't pppd
actually start first and invoke chat to make the connection? When pppd
kicks in it tries to talk to the modem. It fails because it is unable
to detect CARRIER.

4. I installed xisp from unstable along with libforms0.88 I like the
interface. When I say 'Connect' pppd starts fine. Then chat tries to
dial out but fails without any message.

My setup - hamm (CheapBytes CD). /dev/ttyS2 is a Zoom K56 modem. I try
ATZ, ATDTnumber.

And now for the questions -

* Does someone have a working bunch of scripts for connecting to
Netcom? I'd really appreciate it if you could give them to.

* Does Netcom use PAP / CHAP?

* I also want the ability to dial into work. Dial into work uses
SecureID. Are there any dial-up scripts that make using SecureID
easier. I did take a look at /usr/doc/ppp/examples/secure-card but
could not get it work.

Making XDM use *my* window manager

1998-08-11 Thread Sudhakar Chandrasekharan
Hi,

This is most probably a frequently asked question. I poked around the
Debian documentation and am unable to find the information (probably
because I looked at the wrong place). How do I make xdm start a
preferred window manager on a per-user basis? I want to leave the
system-wide default preferred window manager (in
/etc/X11/window-managers) to be Fvwm95. I personally want to use Fvwm2
with Gnome. I already have the appropriate stuff in my .xinitrc for
launching Gnome and Fvwm2 via startx.

% cat ~/.xinitrc
background-properties --init
keyboard-properties --init
mouse-properties --init
panel
xset +fp beetle:7100/
exec /usr/bin/X11/fvwm2

% cat ~/.xserverrc
exec X :0 -bpp 16

Should I be creating a new .xsomething file in my home directory?

My box resides in a secure intranet. Does the default Debian
installation allow other folks using eXceed on WinDOS 95/NT in my
network connect to my machine via XDMCP-Broadcast? Which files should I
modify to allow users in my intranet to connect to my machine (now you
see why I want to leave Fvwm95 as the system-wide default window
manager)?

No color in second xterm

1998-07-29 Thread Sudhakar Chandrasekharan
After I installed hamm on a new machine I have noticed that the first
xterm I start (xterm -ls -sb) has proper colors. All xterms started
after the first xterm do not display colors properly. Even when I quit
all xterms and start a new xterm, the new xterm does not have color.

Here is my setup -

* KDE 1.0

* % setenv | grep TERM
TERM=xterm

* In my .tcshrc -
if ( (! $?ENVONLY)  $?prompt ) then
# Let xterm display the pwd
alias cd 'cd \!*; echo -n ^[]2\;$cwd^G'
set prompt=%U%m%u:%B%/ \!%b%
endif

* Server MetroX. Same problem with SVGA server too.

* cat ~/.xserverrc
exec X :0 -bpp 16

* Color ls works fine. It is color xterm that I am having problems with

How do I get my colors back? What am I doing wrong? Is it a terminfo
problem?

Has anybody installed Debian 2.0 (beta or released) on a HP Kayak XU?

I really have no idea what you mean by chrome. Do you mean they no longer
have a greyish background color? If so, you might need to install on of the
packages nextawg or xaw3dg or xaw95g.

I mean the windows do not have anything surrounding them. The whole title
bar of the window is missing. I am therefore unable to move windows
around. Another thing I noticed was that I am unable to get the pop up
menus (when I click on a blank background part of the screen) for buttons 1,
2 3. My FvwmButtons don't appear. All I get is an xterm and when I quit
this xterm my x session ends and I get thrown back to console. I tried
poking around a bit and found out that /usr/sbin/xbase-config does not do
anything. It just quits. Maybe I should try strace-ing it to find out what
is happening.

[hamm] backspace not working in bash in xterm

1998-03-14 Thread Sudhakar Chandrasekharan
[This mail had bounced back once. Hopefully, it should work this time.]

I am running a hamm system with the latest updates. For the past few
weeks ncurses-bin and ncurses-base upgrades were failing because
/usr/share/terminfo already existed. I mv-ed /usr/shre/terminfo to
/usr/share/terminfo.bak and upgraded my ncurses-base and ncurses-bin. I
also installed the Matrox X server from SuSE.

Since then I have noticed that my backspace has stopped working. In the
case of tcsh I was able to get it back by 'set BACKSPACE ^H' However,
getting it to work under bash is still a problem. I tried 'stty erase
backspace'. But all my computer does is beep when I click the
backspace (or delete) button.

I carried out various tests and have isolated the problem to
TERM=xterm. backspace works fine in the console.

Am I right in assuming that the upgrade to XSuSE was the reason for the
problem? How do I get backspace working again? What files do I need to
edit?

I did a little bit of research and found out that the problem is that
the rftp that comes with socks does not support pasv transfers. I just
installed ncftp, configured it for pasv and things seem to be working
fine now.

The problem with using Navigator / Communicator for ftp is that it is
usually overkill for simple ftp. Also, Navigator FTP does not support
cool stuff like 'prompt off' 'mget *.html' etc.

Re: [Q] KDE for libc6. motif for libc6

1998-03-06 Thread Sudhakar Chandrasekharan
I asked the same question a short time ago and got no answe. But here are
 a couple of ideas:

 a) compile it yourself. The package maintainer gave me a bit of a hint
that, if one wants to go this route, then it would be helpful to install a
package that can be found under
 'ftp.debs.fuller.edu:/debs/kde4debian_0.3_all.deb' - this provides Debian
files in addition to the standard KDE installation.

I am really not comfortable doing this. Mainly because I haven't learn
to use deb-make to include the proper entries for the menu items.

 b) get the libc6 RedHat packages, convert to .deb's and install those.

Question. Would alien add the proper menu entries for the new /
modified applications?

[hamm] dpkg-ftp problems from behind the firewall

1998-01-20 Thread Sudhakar Chandrasekharan
Hi,

I'm trying to upgrade my hamm installation through dselect's FTP method
of retrieving packages. Here are some comments.

* Why does dpkg-ftp insist on downloading all of the packages that are
selected? In other words, why doesn't it download only those packages
(among the ones selected for installation) that are not already
installed?

* I am able to successfully upgrade the list of available packages by
choosing pasv FTP transfer. But when I try to install the packages,
dselect/dpkg says that it is trying to download each of the packages.
The download fails with a 'No such file or directory' for each of the
packages. What is the path I should be giving dpkg-ftp? I tried
/debian/unstable, /debian/hamm and a few others. Is there are problem
with symbolic links?

reponses to mine or anyone else's messages about fixing this problem.
So! Will anyone who's NSN4 will do Java applets properly please
respond to this, then maybe we can figure out what those of us whose
Java does not work have missed.

Hi,

I am sorry I have not been following the Netscape Navigator problems
threads properly. I have been able to run java applets in Navigator
4.04 successfully. But I installed NN 4.04 by hand under /usr/local.

What problems with java applets have you been having?

Here is my setup -

* Netscape files under /usr/local/netscape/
* Symbolic link from /usr/local/bin/netscape to
/usr/local/netscape/netscape
* Environment variable MOZILLA_HOME set to point to /usr/local/netscape

I suspect that your problem is probably because of MOZILLA_HOME.

$ ypcat passwd|grep thaths

When I am able to ypcat and grep my password entry, why am I unable to
login with this username? I have also been unable to su to this

For these three replace db files with compat and you should be done.

And, yes, nsswitch.conf is the place to look for.

How should it read? The HOWTO mentions this but does not give an
example. Could you give me an example.

Also, I am in Panic Mode now. I have changed some stuff in
nsswitch.conf [possibly adding nis to the passed entry or something like
that. nsswitch.conf did not have a man page]. I got back to work this
morning and tried to log in as root and login failed. Could not log in
with a username from NIS either. I decided (unwisely, it seems) to
reboot. Upon reboot the various daemons in /etc/init.d/ are started and
the machine seems (I say seems because I did not wait long enough to see
if it really does) to hang while starting postgres (under /usr/local).

As I see it, here are my options -

* Try to see if the boot sequence is really hanging by giving it enouch
time. If it manages to proceed with the rest of the boot sequence and
gets me into the login prompt, I have to try my luck with loggin in as
root.

* If I am unable to log in as root, how do I fix what I did to
nsswitch.conf? I was sensible enough to backup the old file before
making the changes. I am unable to locate my emergency disk (or
whatever it is called). Can I use the Debian 1.3 distribution's
installation boot disks, mount /dev/sdb3 as root and fix the problem and
then try rebooting with my regular custom boot disk? How?

* Ideally, I'd prefer booting up into NT and being able to access the
ext2 partition. I remember reading somewhere that there is a device
driver for reading / writing into an ext2 partition for NT.

Help me Obi Wan. You are my last hope. ;-)

[fvwm2] Desktops, Pagers and Backgrounds etc.

1998-01-13 Thread Sudhakar Chandrasekharan
I use fvwm2 as my window manager. I want to do a very simple thing but
am confused by the terminology in the man pages. I launch FvwmPager on

Snippets from my /etc/X11/fvwm2/post.hook -

# I want 9 seperate desks to work on
DeskTopSize 3x3

# FvwmPager Customization
* FvwmPagerDeskColor 0 steelblue
* FvwmPagerDeskColor 1 black
* FvwmPagerDeskColor 2 deepblue

# FvwmBacker Customization
*FvwmBackerDesk 0 -solid steelblue
*FvwmBackerDesk 1 -solid blue

you get the idea

I also launch FvwmButtons on startup. My FvwmPager is swallowed by
FvwmButtons.

What I am trying is to give each of my 9 desktops (I switch between
these using the FvwmPager in FvwmButtons) it's own background color.
Once I get this working, I want to match the backgrounds in my FvwmPager
against my different desks.

All I get is an ugly greenish blue background for (get this) *all* the 9
desks. What am I doing wrong? I'm using 1.3.1

libc5 - libc6 Upgrade Roadmap?

1998-01-13 Thread Sudhakar Chandrasekharan
I read the mini HOWTO and reports in this mailing list about unstable
being stable enough. My machine is kind of a production server. The
world would not end if it goes down for a day or so. But still it is
important to have it up and running ASAP. I am planning on upgrading to
hamm later today. I have a few questions before I set off -

* I am downloading the entire hamm binary-i386, contrib and non-free
tree to a directory (actually, my home directory) on an NFS server. Is
there a possibility that NFS might stop working during the upgrade
process?

* Could some kind soul who has gone through the upgrade process give me
a roadmap? The Mini-HOWTO, though useful, does not provide information
on how to upgrade the other packages once I have done the basic
upgrading. Can I start using dselect after following the instructions
in the mini-HOWTO?

* I have compiled and installed some packages under /usr/local/ (pgsql,
ssh, socks etc.). I guess I have compiled these with libc5. Is there a
possibility that they would stop working when I upgrade to libc6?

* I am running something 1.3.1.r4 Should I get hold of the libc5
libraries (from gate.net) that don't conflict with libc6 and upgrade
after installing these libraries?

Your help would be greatly appreciated.

make-kpkg - minor irritant compiling custom kernel

1997-12-09 Thread Sudhakar Chandrasekharan
Hi,

I'm trying to compile a custom kernel (2.0.31) for my machine using
make-kpkg (3.01). I came across a minor irritant. Here is what I do -

1. make config|xconfig|menuconfig

2. Edit drivers/sound/local.h and add #define DESKPROXL (my machine.
drivers/sound/Readme.cards asks me to add this line after make config.

3. make-kpkg -revision Custom.X.Y kernel_image
To my irritation, make-kpkg runs make config again in some kind of
automated mode. And drivers/sound/local.h is re-created without the
#define for DESKPROXL.

Because of make-kpkg running make config again, I am unable to use
(without some emlementary hacking of the Makefile in drivers/sound/)
make-kpkg for creating custom kernels. Is make-kpkg supposed to behave
this way?

First let's make sure your kit is complete. Checking...
Looks good...

This installation shell script will examine your system and ask you questions
to determine how the perl5 package should be installed. If you get
stuck on a question, you may use a ! shell escape to start a subshell or
execute a command. Many of the questions will have default answers in square
brackets; typing carriage return will give you the default.

On some of the questions which ask for file or directory names you are allowed
to use the ~name construct to specify the login directory belonging to name,
even if you don't have a shell which knows about that. Questions where this is
allowed will be marked (~name ok).

[Type carriage return to continue]

The prompter used in this script allows you to use shell variables and
backticks in your answers. You may use $1, $2, etc... to refer to the words
in the default answer, as if the default line was a set of arguments given to a
script shell. This means you may also use $* to repeat the whole default line,
so you do not have to re-type everything to add something to the default.

Everytime there is a substitution, you will have to confirm. If there is an
error (e.g. an unmatched backtick), the default answer will remain unchanged
and you will be prompted again.

If you are in a hurry, you may run 'Configure -d'. This will bypass nearly all
the questions and use the computed defaults (or the previous answers if there
was already a config.sh file). Type 'Configure -h' for a list of options.
You may also start interactively and then answer ' -d' at any prompt to turn
on the non-interactive behavior for the remainder of the execution.

[Type carriage return to continue]

Much effort has been expended to ensure that this shell script will run on any
Unix system. If despite that it blows up on yours, your best bet is to edit
Configure and run it again. If you can't run Configure for some reason,
you'll have to generate a config.sh file by hand. Whatever problems you
have, let me ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) know how I blew it.

This installation script affects things in two ways:

1) it may do direct variable substitutions on some of the files included
   in this kit.
2) it builds a config.h file for inclusion in C programs. You may edit
any of these files as the need arises after running this script.

If you make a mistake on a question, there is no easy way to back up to it
currently. The easiest thing to do is to edit config.sh and rerun all the SH
files. Configure will offer to let you do this before it runs the SH files.

[Q] problems with TimeZone, Clock xntp

1997-11-15 Thread Sudhakar Chandrasekharan
Hi,

I have xntp installed. My system should get the correct time when it
boots up. But I see that my xclock shows is ahead by an hour. I
suspect this has something to do with the fact that I had problems
running tzconfig.

I run tzconfig and choose 'US time zones' in the first screen. Now I
try to choose 'Pacific'. But 'Pacific' always conflicts with
'Pacific-New Samoa' so I get struck at this prompt. To break out of the
loop, I choose Mountain. Then I edit /etc/timezone and change it to
Pacific physically. However, when I run date, I get the following as
the output -

$ date
Fri Nov 14 16:45:12 MST 1997

I guess 'MST' refers to Mountain Standard Time. How can I get my
system to show the correct local time?

Does anyone use this package? If yes, how I go about activating autofs

I remember seeing some such problem too. Try the following -

* Make sure you have chosen 'y' for 'Prompt for experimental modules /
drivers'. autofs support is still considered to be experimental.

* I would recommend 'make config'. I definitely saw 'autofs' support
when I configured this way.

[Q] talk - Couldn't bind to control socket...

Hi,

I recently switched to kernel 2.0.31. 'talk' seems to have broken after
this switch. When I try 'talk' I get the following message -

$ talk thaths
Couldn't bind to control socket : Cannot assign requested address (99)

Does this have something to do with the new kernel? BTW, which package

[Q] autofs and kernel 2.0.31

1997-10-28 Thread Sudhakar Chandrasekharan
Hi,

Thanks, first of all, to all the folks who answered my questions on
getting Sound and CD to work on my Compaq DeskPro XL.

I have been fooling around with kernel 2.0.31 that I downloaded from
funet.fi I see that autofs support is included with this release of the
kernel. Are there docs on autofs? I am currently using amd and would
like to switch to autofs. I also downloaded autofs-0.3.14 This has the
autofs deamons and modules and a patchfile for kernel 2.0.30 I am
unable to compile kernel 2.0.30 with autofs support. That is the reason
I moved up to kernel 2.0.31

How should I proceed with kernel 2.0.31 and autofs? Would the autofs
deamon 0.3.14 wouk with the autofs support in kernel 2.0.31?

I'd say, if the patches for autofs are included in 2.0.31, go ahead, just
install autofs-0.3.14 and use the kernel configured for autofs support. It
has worked fine for some time now in the 2.1.x series, so I suppose the
 2.0.31 support is the latest.

Installation of the daemon is fairly easy, just let it install, and make
your maps /etc/auto.master with everything sensible. Then, launch the
 daemon and here you go!

I just found an even better method. Just downloaded autofs from hamm
(unstable). I prefer the Debian distribution to a local installation.
If the hamm autofs installation goes OK I'm set. If it does not work
out, I can always make a local installation of autofs.

Speaking of automounting, have any of you folks come across a way of
automounting SMB volumes? I don't like smbclient/smbmount.

True that Debian has this wonderful upgrade mechanism. The problem is I

Those of us who followed the recommendations of the docs installed 1.1 on
one partition. I upgraded to 1.2 by just gradually installing all the 1.2
packages, but now I have realised the error of one partition and I will be
installing 1.3 from a clean hard disk on to several partitions - with
/home and /usr/local backed up and reinstalled of course.

The same in my case too. Ideally, I would like to have seperate
partitions for /, /usr, /usr/local, /home and /root. One wants to
maintain a clean machine. ;-)

Another thing. The more installs and re-installs that one does, the
more one learns in the process - IMO. I have had hours of bliss (and
learning) installing Debian on all kinds of machines.

In my case I had only one machine on my desktop and it happened to be

How do I get Netscape to not use a SOCKS host for machines in my local

 I am running Mozilla/3.01Gold (X11; I; Linux 2.0.27 i586) on my
Debian 1.2 box, which is on a network behind a (SOCKS 4) firewall.
After I set Options/Network Preferences/Proxies to Manual Proxy
Configuration and filled in the SOCKS Host field it had no problems
getting through to the outside world. However, it goes through the
SOCKS host even to contact local http servers. (This is a problem
because the SOCKS host is in a different building to which I am
connected with only 10Kbps pipe.) I set the No Proxy for field to
the local domain name but this had no effect.

Mozilla/3.0Gold (WinNT; 1), similarly set up to use the SOCKS host,
connects to local http servers directly, even without an entry in the
 No Proxy for field.

It looks like the 'No Proxy For' field does not accept widcards. So
saying No Proxy for *.foo.com would still take you to bar.foo.com
through your configured proxy (in your case, the SOCKS 4 host).

One solution I can think of is using the 'Automatic Proxy Config'
feature. For more info on this, read -

http://home.netscape.com/eng/mozilla/2.0/relnotes/demo/proxy-live.html

Neither am I saying that people should start moving up to communicator.
I am just saying that one should always keep one's (form and cookie)

With Communicator one can start using filters and (gasp!) digital

Actually, I haven't had the time to set up my debian-user filters up.
So currently all the emails to this list get dumped into a folder for
future reading. A way of having meaningful subject lines could work.
But again, it would not if people did not follow the naming convention.
I emailed a post last week that went 'update-menus broken in 1.4?' In
retrospect I think I should have chosen a better subject line. How
about the following scheme -

[net] problem with communicator install
[x11] problem setting up fvwm2 menus

etc.

J/ my 2 cents.

 See (1)xauth for details.
You can also use ssh which will do this automagically, and will also encrypt

I don't know about the Debian-non-Us site. But you could go to the

It runs pretty smoothly on my machine.

[Q] update-menus broken in 1.3?

1997-06-06 Thread Sudhakar Chandrasekharan
I have spent the last couple of hours trying to customize my fvwm2
setup. I basically want to add stuff to the default menus that comes
with Debian. I tried the following -

* Moved /usr/lib/menu/default/vim to /etc/menu/vim and ran
update-menus. Then quit X and restarted it. Don't find vim under
/Apps/Editors (which is where it is supposed to put in).

* Moved /usr/lib/menu/default/vim to ~/.menu/vim and did the same as
above. Still no vim in my Apps/Editors

* Moved /usr/lib/menu/default/vim to /usr/lib/menu/vim (I know.  I am
not supposed to do that. But just wanted to find out if update-menu was
broken). Ran the update scripts and restarted X. Still to no avail.

What am I missing?

Do you have the vim package installed? I doubt it. If you look at
/etc/menu/vim, it probably starts with ?package(vim): which means that
unless package vim is installed, this menu entry will be ignored.

Oops! Forgot to mention that. I have installed the latest beta version
of vim under /usr/local/bin.

To add local stuff, try using ?package(menu): at the front of the line in
themenu file. Since the menu package is of course installed, the menu item
will show up. (There are probably better ways to do this..)

That worked. As you said, there *should* be another way to specify
local packages. Though I can understand why update-menus does not add
an item if the package is not installed.

Another question. I know this might be a FAQ.

If I want to install a package that is not part of the Debian
distribution, how do I go about it? I think there are two scenarios
here -

* foo.tar.gz contains the binaries, libs etc.
* foo.tar.gz contains the source. Ie. I have to compile the program
before I install it.

I have currently been bypassing the dpkg mechanism and installing these
packages under /usr/local tree.

You're doing it correctly, ideally all programs not installed from debian
(or redhat or slackware with alien) packages should be put under
/usr/local. Debian won't touch files there, except for a few packages
that create empty directories where local add-ons can be placed (perl and
 emacs/xemacs that I recall).

I think I should rephrase my question. Assuming I don't want to get
around dpkg while installing local packages, what should I do? Or
rather, how do I create my own .deb package?
