Je sais manier la ligne de commande (novice sur le fonctionnement de os, mais je me débrouille en bash et python). Quelqu'un pourrais me conseiller et me guider sans remettre mes choix en cause. J'ai installé plusieurs fois Debian Etch sous VirtualBox (sur PC Windows et Mac OS) sans aucun problème. J'ai installé à partir de l'image netinst. Aucune idée pour résoudre le problème du montage du DVD sous Virtual PC, mais tu pourrais : 1- essayer VirtualBox, c'est libre et j'en suis très satisfait ; 2- installer depuis une image CD plutôt que DVD, comme l'image netinst ou busyness card (si tu as internet sur ce PC, bien sûr). Je ne suis pas sûr, mais il est bien possible que l'install par l'image busyness card ne nécessite pas du tout de monter le medium après le boot. Regarde le contenu du fichier / var/log/Xorg.0.log : $ less /var/log/Xorg.0.log en particulier les lignes commençant par (EE) qui signalent une erreur. Tu peux n'afficher que celles-ci en tapant dans ton terminal : $ grep ^(EE) /var/log/Xorg.0.log Bon courage. Tous les paquets qui en dépendent seront cassés, bien entendu, lance simplement aptitude pour corriger ces problèmes (il devrait automatiquement te proposer de réinstaller les paquets manquants). Quand X est lancé (écran gris), essayer de lancer des applications depuis la console (xeyes -display :0), a priori en tant que root. Bon courage.

By the way, I can also highlight the backports' version and hit enter: then I can see the details for the backports version, including which dependencies will be pulled from backports if I install this package. Just for some reason unknown to me apt-get (and aptitude) doesn't manage to get certain packages. apt-get (aptitude) update/clean/autoclean/dist-upgrade/check makes no difference. What now? Now you've pin-pointed your problem: it is with APT, which fails to download some packages. As far as I understand, the problem is reproducible with the packages that are affected (if a package does not install a first time, insisting won't help). Before anything else, I would try a couple of different mirrors, perhaps the problem really lies there. If that fails, and if you can live with it, you'll have to download those packages by hand and dpkg -i them. If you can't, I'd suggest you reinstall your system, with the stable release this time, which should work better. It's not that outdated, and you can get some newer versions of prominent software from www.backports.org. It's possible that there is a problem with your configuration, but it may be a bug in APT. You should send a bug report against this package with all information gathered so far, and be ready to test things if the developers need more input. For such testing purposes, if you wipe-out this installation and install sarge instead, you could setup a chroot (but you may not have to). By the way, have you tried turning on verbosity/debugging options? That would certainly help solving the problem on the long run. I can't help you much further, I hope you'll manage your problems and get a nice Debian box soon! I also hope the bug you've hit, if it is one, will be resolved in due time. If you want more help from this list, I suggest you rename the topic to something more specific, like APT fails to download some packages. Reproducable. Decided to re-format and re-install. This time everything seemed fine, after reboot I immediately got into the gnome environment. Of course I immediately wanted to install some packages again. BUT! Again the same problem! Small packages worked fine, e.g. apt-get install madplay. But I couldn't install any bigger packages like xmms or lyx. What is going on here? Anyone has a clue? Looks to me like you've hit a bug in dpkg or apt-get. Again, it's very helpful if you can report it. Now as to getting around this problem (and investigating its cause, so your bug report is more useful), I would try using aptitude instead of apt-get (works the same way on the command line), if you can install aptitude that is. I would also try downloading some of the packages manually from packages.debian.org (they may be already in you cache, somewhere near /var/cache/apt/something), and installing them using dpkg. If any of these works, you know the problem is in apt-get. Note that you can still use apt-get to resolve the dependencies for you if you end up having to install packages manually (for as long as the bug your're reporting is not fixed): simply do a dry apt-get run (see the manpages) and install manually the packages that apt-get wants to install. You can also do a ps | grep dpkg when apt-get hangs to see whether or not it's really dpkg that hangs. Thanks for your feedback! And thanks for yours. What you can do is dynamically create the file in your postinst, but dpkg will mention that the file has been modified each time snmpd is upgraded. What I would do (if it is possible and if it would do the trick) is ship a separate file and use the postinst script to append something like a include,myfile.conf at the end of `/etc/snmp/snmpd.conf' (I don't know the syntax of this file). dpkg would still ask what to do upon upgrade, but it looks cleaner to me to have a single line to manage in the file. The resulting file is _not_ searchable (xpdf and evince,) and at 28K is more than twice the size of the same text being printed through Acrobat (12K) Hmmm... I assumed too much. You can certainly use debootstrap to set up your chroot, and then dpkg (force) remove what you don't want in it. Hello, What you put in your upstream Makefiles is not really relevant to the packaging: debian's rules file (which is a Makefile) has no install target. Well thought upstream Makefiles help for maintaining a package, though. If you write Makefiles for this install task, make sure they accept the DESTDIR variable, so that make install DESTDIR=debian/package does its job. The install task can also be done entirely within packager-land, i.e. debian/rules. There's no problem with packaging code that's not compiled. You will have a binary-arch target which is empty and a binary-indep which is not. The Architecture: field in the control file should be set to all. Install the SMART tools and check the drive now, then make sure it is checked regularly. I suppose you don't want to loose your data, so do think of some backup/redundancy scheme (software RAID with two cheap drives, perhaps?). I can't help you much with that, but I believe that's a fairly important aspect you might be overlooking. By having a quick look at the Depends: of gnome-spell, you'll notice that it's engine is aspell, not ispell, so you need to install the aspell dictionaries for the languages you use (an English dictionary will be installed by default). The nice thing with grub is it has a nice command line that will let you boot anything even if it's not in the configuration file. I recommend you print your current /boot/grub/menu.lst on paper (having it printed will help if you end up needing to boot by hand), study it and read man update-grub. Also make a copy of this file under another name in case it is overwritten during install. It's not unlikely you'll have to tweak menu.lst by hand in the end. Any problem should be recoverable*, so chose a day when you know you have some free time you can use for a possible recovery and go ahead. If I start a window I want it to be raised, given focus, and even a drink if it wants it! This makes me think that metacity should be renamed to perver-city. I'm missing something here, can't you just change the focus_new_windows setting? Should I file this as a bug? As it is, I'll using my stable boxes for anything serious until this is resolved. IMHO, you should not file more than a wishlist bug asking for the default to be smart (unless I did not understand the exact problem, of course). Sharing /usr
Dear Debian users, According to the [1]FHS, /usr is supposed to be sharable between computers, mounted using e.g. NFS. Likewise, /usr/share is supposed to be sharable between machines of different architectures. [1] http://www.pathname.com/fhs/ What would be the preferred way for doing such things under Debian? Assume I have several i386 boxes and a few sparcs, how would I install Debian on these machines, upgrade, remove packages... while sharing /usr/share between all the machines, and /usr between all the machines of a given arch?
