Nobody uses that anymore and it interferes with "straight" CD/DVD-burning. If the error messages still show up after that it's most likely an unreadable DVD or your DVD-drive is beginning to fail. Usually the tracking lasers in these devices get deadjusted after a few years and readjusting them would be too much effort.

Whatever file systems, partitions, logical volumes or arbitrary stuff like raw partitions, empty spaces or spares you want, you can put them on LVM logical volumes and wipe them off there if you want so. I rember a faulty chipset in the early days of USB3 causing lots of headaches but wasn't personally affected. No actual USB-3 chipset has let me down so far, however. I am actually doing MIDI over USB with all my synths but one, a 1989 KORG Polysix with MIDI retrofit via DIN. This means I've got four synths and three controllers communicating duplex over the same active USB-3 hub without problems even when sequencing three of them and recording + monitoring the master keyboard simultaneously. No miracle comparing MIDI's very small bandwith and timing requirements with USB-3 specs.

So I can't agree to your "cheap" argument. Not that I recommend expensive hubs in particular but they should at least be based on a reliable chipset, bring a solid PSU and no tacky connectors.

So hardware problem, indeed. These connectors are 50¢ apiece, but unfortunately they are usually SMC parts soldered directy on the print circuit board so they provide very little resistance against the shearing tension implied by the USB cable. I've just luckily been able to repair a € 500.- desktop synthesizer from exactly that kind of damage. That was hard enough despite the usage of a full-size connector on the extarnal side and probably much more space to work than inside a portable audio interface. I've seen this kind of damage a lot in USB interfaces and usually there's little hope of repair unless you put a lot of time and skill in it.

Having used both for years for standard (ripping, replaying, recencoding) tasks as well as for somewhat exotic stuff like streaming video sources from gadgets live into VJ mixers using all kind of filter in between I would say that mencoder is the app of choice if it gets the job done because it has much simpler options. FFMPEG comes into play whenever simpler options fail. As you noticed there are more options than anyone could memorize trying to cover even the most exotic use-cases. Your command line, BTW, looks very much like my standard section in .mplayer/config for live streaming/encoding from a webcam. I'd suppose reading the extra HTML-doc for mplayer. It's a relatively easy read. Getting into FFMPEG is certainly worth it, too - if you have specific needs.

Am 08/02/2010 01:25 AM, schrieb Scarletdown: I'm building a Linux system specifically for video capture in prep for yet another video games review site I want to attempt. She is running Debian Sid with Enlightenment as her desktop. I am having a helluva time trying to get things working properly. First of all, I just installed my old PCTV (bt878 based) TV tuner that used to work fine for me years ago. On this, I am getting video fine, but not getting any sound through the card I tried connecting the speakers directly to the card's line out and also tried running a patch cable from line out to the sound card's line in and then connecting the speakers to the sound card. Both configurations resulted in no sound at all. Additionally, XAWTV for some reason is not saving my settings when I exit. Why would that be? Also, captured video when played back through vlc as well as when played online, is tearing pretty bad (looks okay when played on the old TV though). It is also running a little too fast. I recorded at 24fps, thinking that was the NTSC standard for video. Was that an incorrect guess? Here is a clip, captured from a Wii game showing the tearing and slightly too fast playback (don't laugh, this is being done for the amusement of my young neices and nephews next time I go visit them. :p Having done exactly what you are describing with A/V output from VJing machines using a BT878 myself, I'd suppose you: - just forget XAWTV for capturing - get mencoder, ffmpeg and probably some H264 stuff like GPAC for web streaming (debian-multimedia has all you need, unless you build your own mplayer) - get mencoder-doc and read the man page - especially the last few lines with examples about recording from TV input (I don't know your TV norm or your input signal, so I can't give you advice for specific options) - use your audio card's line in for audio capturing. There's quite good advice, how to do that in mplayers man page - capture in raw or lossless mjpeg format and PCM audio to be able to encode as H264 or ogg/ogm later for web streaming (HTML5/Flowplayer) without recompression artefacts Unfortunately I don't have one of my well-probed scripts at hand right now, but basically I did some experimenting with input size and cropping of the captured video to find a format that suited best (beware of interleaved input signals), captured to MJPEG/PCM and recoded to H264 for web streaming with flowplayer. There might be some hassle finding the right settings for your audio hardware to record from line-in. Was willst du denn genau updaten? So bist du selber schuld...
