Provide the default GNOME theme in gnome-core please
Package: gnome-core Version: 1:2.30+1 Severity: wishlist Hi, I'm quite satisfied with the Clearlooks to be the default GNOME theme, and I don't want anything else. Please provide the default GNOME theme (whatever it is) in gnome-core, instead of putting it anywhere else. Re: system load spike
Hi all, Thanks for the replies. I've identified that it's pdflush that is causing the problem. I have 3 of them running in D state along with usb-storage. This is enough to cause a system load of 4. Adding gzip will make it 5. I've found some references stating the problems of having multiple pdflush: * http://www.stanford.edu/~csar/archives/2004/12/who_needs_pdflu.html * http://www.spoonix.org/blog/2006/09/22/ive-about-had-enough-of-pdflush - -- Kent Tong Wicket tutorials freely available at http://www.agileskills2.org/EWDW -- View this message in context: http://www.nabble.com/system-load-spike-tf4668531.html#a13355803 Sent from the Debian User mailing list archive at Nabble.com. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. system load spike
Hi, I am using a shell script to perform backup. Whenever it is launched, the system load average reaches 3-5 regularly. I am already launching it script using nice -n 19. The script is using find, cpio and gzip. They should automatically inherit the nice value of 19. I am already using gzip -1 so that it uses the least CPU. It is possible that the bottleneck is I/O, not CPU. Is there any way to reduce the system load? Thanks! - -- Kent Tong Wicket tutorials freely available at http://www.agileskills2.org/EWDW -- View this message in context: http://www.nabble.com/system-load-spike-tf4668531.html#a13336247 Sent from the Debian User mailing list archive at Nabble.com. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Re: system load spike
Carl Fink-4 wrote: Why is a lower load important to you? Depending on the script you could introduce a sleep 1 between each compression step, which gives the system I/O a chance to catch up. Obviously you could also vary the 1 as needed. Thanks for the reply. We have a performance monitoring system and that high system load is triggering quite some alerts. The backup is basically done in a single command pipeline: find -L $SRCROOT -xdev -size -50G | \ cpio -o -H tar | \ gzip -c -1 $DSTPATH Therefore it's difficult to insert sleep into there. - -- Kent Tong Wicket tutorials freely available at http://www.agileskills2.org/EWDW -- View this message in context: http://www.nabble.com/system-load-spike-tf4668531.html#a13336609 Sent from the Debian User mailing list archive at Nabble.com. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. [OT] low-budget camcorder and avi dvd player
Hi, I know there are way too many camcorder types analog/digital, recording media, etc, than I could possibly know. Is there any good site that you recommend for the reading? (I've done googling, no thanks to any googling suggestions) I'm planning to buy a low-budget (digital) camcorder, as long as I can copy the video to my PC, do some minimum transcoding if necessary but definitely not full-fledged fancy transcoding that takes hours to finish, then put the result avi file onto dvd disk, so as to play it on my avi-compatible dvd player. Is it ever possible? and for low-budget camcorder? I think I must be dreaming to have a ~$100 camcorder + a ~$60 avi-compatible dvd player that can fulfill above, is it? Sorry for OT. However, I think I'd better ask for advices before doing so. Please comments. Personally, I would just bite the bullet and do the upgrade -- tetex is going away and you'll have to switch over eventually anyway. Is there a particular difficulty you're running into with the upgrade? Yeah, I guess that is an easier solution now. Previously, as stated in OP, I hoped that keeping tetex from upgrading to texlive will ease the Etch to Lenny transition for the moment, because I've upgraded over 500 packages already, and there are still over a thousand packages waiting to be upgraded. Maybe there's a tool that makes it possible to find a string in a bunch of files and also to list in which file the string was found? Or any modification to the command given above? I wrote a perl script that does this (and other stuff) I wrote such a perl script as well when in Window$. But now I stick to plain *nix solution -- why bother a script if you can do it with pure *nix command. Try this: grep -Hn 'a_certain_function' `find . -name '*.c'` If the find command returns over hundreds of files, which might yield command line too long error, try this: find . -name '*.c' | xargs grep -Hn 'a_certain_function' You can also substitute grep with agrep for much more advanced searches: agrep text search tool with support for approximate patterns See, the combination of pure *nix command can solve every possible problems you may have, whereas in window$, you have to have thousands of individual tools for thousands of different tasks, and even with the same task, say rename files, you may have to choose from hundreds of tools to pick the one that suits your needs. On reviewing them and the faq, I think my wish still holds. Just like John Hasler has pointed out, the -X disables termcap initialization and deinitialization. The effect is that, when I browse say a big file, paging up and down several times, and then exit, my xterm will be left with all contents that I've browsed, with ...skipping... in between them. So having a keyboard command 'x' or something can allows me, - have the freedom to decide whether I want to leave the content or not - invoke less the same way, no matter whether I want to leave the content or not - leave my xterm with the only pageful of info that I deliberately chosen, instead of cluttering it with all the contents that I've viewed. I don't know if this is possible. But it's a nice feature. It comes especially handy when you want to preserve your xterm scroll-back history as much as possible, but still able to copy the content out of the man page, which might be lengthy and might took a while for your to locate where you want to copy from. Alternative to netselect
Hi, I had been able to use netselect before. When I tried it again just now, all sites end up with ms 30 hops 0% ok. I'm wondering why netselect fails on me. My understanding is that netselect uses ping, but ping works fine for me, but traceroute not. That means netselect actually depends on traceroute? Debian default ssh configuration problem with public/private key checking
Hi, I'm trying to setup Debian to accept my remote ssh login. No problem with that, but I'm facing a configuration problem: It doesn't seem to be able to handle/accept the public/private key checking, i.e.,what sourceforge.net is doing [1], but insists on checking login password [2], which is not a recommended practice. Anybody has such positive experience with Partimage? It's quite easy to use a live distro in a usb device. You can : - format usb devices as fat: # mkfs.vfat -n volumename -F 16 usbdevice_partition (/dev/sda1, for example) - mount the live cd iso and usb device: # mount -o loop iso mount point # mount -t vfat usbdevice_partition usbdevice_partition_mountpoint - copy all content to usb device. # cp -a iso mount point/* usbdevice_partition_mountpoint -if it's a livecd, probably use syslinux/isolinux to boot, so find syslinux.bin and syslinux.cfg (in root directory) OR isolinux.bin and isolinux.cfg (in /boot directory); if you find isolinux.* in /boot directory, copy those files in root directory, renaming those in syslinux.*: # cd usbdevice_partition_mountpoint # cp boot/isolinux.bin syslinux.bin # cp boot/isolinux.cfg syslinux.cfg (you can modifiy syslinux.cfg to change default boot delay, background, font or to add another distro) - umount usb device: # cd # umount usbdevice_partition - and make it bootable with syslinux: # syslinux usbdevice_partition, /dev/sda1 for example ... I may be wrong, but I remember there was a LiveCD that if you put .deb files in the /deb folder it would automatically install them at boot time (And there was a certain way to handle dependencies, too). Perhaps I'm thinking of DSL or Knoppix? YES, all the steps you described are for DSL. and yes, DSL allows you to automatically install .dsl (not .deb) files the way you described. DSL has already come with X windows, email/browser/word processing/slide presentations, etc. What's amazing is that it is ONLY 50M. X won't start having upgraded from xsever to xorg
Hi, This is a real emergency. My X won't start now, having upgraded from xsever to xorg. Is there any way I can have my X back? I saw in thread Routine upgrade of packages tracking etch has hosed gnome http://linux.derkeiler.com/Mailing-Lists/Debian/2005-09/1631.html that there is way to restore using xserver instead of xorg. I tried to follow it, but wasn't successful. I removed all xorg and xserver packages and reinstall xserver from scratch, but still I was forced to install xorg. I installed the xorg, try its hardware auto-detection, again, but still my X won't start. upgrade from kernel 2.4 to 2.6
Hi, I want to upgrade my kernel from 2.4 to 2.6. Yeah, I know the simple answer is install the 2.6 kernel and boot into it. But I'm thinking, it might be more than that. For me particularly, I use SCSI emulation for my CDs in kernel 2.4. (I know I shouldn't but the ATAPI interface didn't work out of the box, and I didn't know how to fix it, so I had to revert to SCSI emulation) If I upgrade my kernel to 2.6, I think I have to tweak those CD modules manually -- to use the ATAPI interface only. What is the right setting? I've mess my module setting so much that I am afraid next change would be the last hay to break my camel. Thanks for you help. Another thing about kernel. Say I know a very cool kernel that has all nice features built within, will just grab it and boot into it works in Debian? I presume that lots of dependencies would be broken, wouldn't it? About chroot
Hi, Several questions about chroot. - I need to chroot into an alien system. I.e., I need to chroot into a 2.6 kernel from my 2.4 kernel. Is that ok? - I heard all the fuzz about un/mounting the /proc, but I can't find any documents on that. Can somebody explains me why it is so critical, or give me a link to refer to please? - I need to apt-get from the chrooted system. but on my 1st attempt, I was not able to connect to outside, even ping. But all the documents I read (I'm remastering a live CD) didn't mention anything about the connection problem.
