Help! My Debian blew up!

1999-12-11 Thread T.M. Hospedales
All of a sudden while trying to emacs -nw options to setup my new
modem , things refuse to execute! It just stalls and doesn't do anything!
I see no particular connection between things that work and those that
dont: Working: xterm, ls, cat, fsck, vi Not: startx, emacs, xemacs,
netscape, syslogd (Renders system unbootable but for single mode)...

Please tell me I dont have to d/l a new debian install over a 1.0 kps
ppp link?! :(.

I am using potato + kernel 2.2.12 last upgraded about a week ago and
running fine until just now.

Thanks,
tim

Video Board Support?

1999-10-04 Thread Timothy Hospedales
Hi, my new computer came with an ATI Rage Fury 128 AGPx2 (32MB).

Databases

1999-09-08 Thread Timothy Hospedales
Hi, ive been trying out MySQL and PostgreSQL on debian too see which I
will use for my database projects.
Can anyone recommend:
1. Documentation / HOWTOs or whatever on how to set these up with web
interfaces - expecially about how to do so as a database beginner and not
compromise the security of your whole system:).

2. What web/software client interface method is best to use and why? - The two
clients in unstable/misc seem to be non-free and ide rather use Open Source
stuff naturally.

Thanks,

Palm Pilot Software

1999-07-15 Thread Timothy Hospedales
Hi,
I was trying to get the pilot-manager and pilot-link packages to play with my
new palm IIIx. But things seem to be fried due to the perl upgrade...?

SNIP
jade:/dev# apt-get install pilot-manager pilot-link
Reading Package Lists... Done
Building Dependency Tree... Done
Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have
requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable
distribution that some required packages have not yet been created
or been moved out of Incoming.
The following information may help to resolve the situation:
Sorry, but the following packages have unmet dependencies:
pilot-manager: Depends: perl-tk but it is not installed
E: Sorry, broken packages
jade:/dev# apt-get install perl-tk
Reading Package Lists... Done
Building Dependency Tree... Done
The following extra packages will be installed:
  perl-5.005 apache-common liburi-perl libgtk-perl libhtml-parser-perl apache
  perl-base autoconf eperl perl-5.005-base dpkg-dev libnet-perl
  libmime-base64-perl sgml-data libwww-perl
The following packages will be REMOVED:
libmd5-perl mailtools w3mir dns-browse mrtg makepasswd perl checkbot
  wu-ftpd-academ webmagick
The following NEW packages will be installed:
  perl-5.005 perl-5.005-base perl-tk
/SNIP

I cant let it remove stuff that i need like wu-ftpd-academ etc. What
does that have to do with perl anyway? But, point being, does anyone have any
tips for getting around this mess, or have any other (Preferably debianized)
software which wont conflict to suggest? (I played with Pyrite but it doesnt
seem to do much beside back up the palm pilot)

Thanks,
Timothy
PS: Which software do I need in order to beable to install downloaded 3rd party
apps on the palm pilot?

Xemacs

1999-07-11 Thread Timothy Hospedales
Hello,
I have been using Xemacs more and more and begin to realize that it is
obviously the single coolest program ever written;). Unfourtunately it is far
from easy to learn, and right now I am too broke to buy any more books. So can
anyone point me to any online tutorial/manual type resources which are more
comprehensive than the included tutorial (from help menu) which doesnt even
scratch the surface? (The included xemacs info pages themselves are quite
helpfull but a step by step guide through various procedures rather than the
command by command approach in the info pages would be nice).

Thanks!

Emacs psgml mode?

Writing Drivers? Info Appreciated!

1999-06-04 Thread Timothy Hospedales
When people are trying to write drivers for stuff that isnt already
supported under linux, how exactly do they go about doing it?
I mean, if I want to, say, make a program to grab pictures from my
unsupported digital camera. Could I get some program to 'filter' the serial
port or whatever in winblows to see what control codes the software uses to
control the camera and then try to re-implement such a system under
linux? Basically Reverse engineering the software's functionality I guess? (I
would, of course, then donate the code to one of the OpenSource camera projects
;)).

Anyway, if this sort of thing is possible could someone point me to a
winblows program to use to examine what gets sent over a port?

Thanks!

Re: Debian applications - where to get them???

1999-06-03 Thread Timothy Hospedales
 3. I wanted to download x11amp (also called winamp in the Windows
world) to play MP3 files but could not find it anywhere. Any suggestions on
where I might be able to get a copy (preferably in .deb format)? (Any
suggestions for a better player are also welcome :-) ).

apt-get update; apt-get install x11amp allways works for me! :)
x11amp uses the least CPU time of any of the others ive tried, (All!),
so its probably the best:)

Re: I worry...

1999-06-03 Thread Timothy Hospedales
We had a hard time finding someone willing to do our Debian server. All
of the ones we contaced to get our web server built told us they felt more
confident doing a RH install or they said: RH is pretty strong in this
 ares,
and some of them even had some nifty deals for us if we chose RH. How will
 the
Debian community be able to fight in a market like this in the future?
This sounds like all the supposed linux gurus that got interviewed
actually dont know what they are doing - if the ABSOLUTELY NEED RH's fancy GUI
tools to configure everything! :).

RE: ICQ programs for Debian GNU/Linux

1999-05-31 Thread Timothy Hospedales
I have tried most of the ICQ clones available and I find that micq is
the most stable! And does the least weird stuff like loosing messages. The
command line thing is quite neat also; I found it unexpectedly good to not have
to click to recieve messages - saves lots of time! :). Unfourtunately it
doesnt look like micq is debianized; but its compiles easily out of the box so
thats okay. I forget the URL; but just search on freshmeat and youll find it!
However, since micq doesnt do file xfers; I use gtkicq whenever I have
to accept file transfers from people who are too clueless to login to me ftp
and send it over:)
HTH!
Tim

 Hi,

I'd like to know what are the good packages for ICQ people use in
Debian. I've been using gtkicq for some time, and though I think it is
a nice package, I'm not sure as to how reliable it is... looks like I
never get to receive some messages while using it...

More than that, it looks like gtkicq is no longer in potato (why?),
and I can't upgrade some of my gnome slink stuff to potato, because
 this would remove my gtkicq.

 Any comments?

xemacs + nextawg?

1999-05-19 Thread Timothy Hospedales
Hi,
Is it possible to make xemacs work with nextawg and if so can someone direct me
as to how?
I tried the usual export LD_PRELOAD thing. And ldd on xemacs binary shows the
first library in the nextawg directory. But it still comes up as usual.

Or if not. Is there any way to make it look prettier? (Color at least?) The dull
black-grey-white thing kind of spoils a pretty windomaker +
gnome-themeified desktop! :)

Thanks!

rvplayer working?

1999-04-30 Thread Timothy Hospedales
Hi! Has anyone got the RealVideo player to work?
I got the .rpm package from www.real.com and debianized it with alien and then
installed it. Then I set it up with netscape as per instructions. (It didn't
come with the .class files for the plugin; so I had to get those from the
.tgz archive).
But the only thing it will play is the default in rvplayer's location
bar: pnm://video.real.com/welcome.rm. Everything else - EG: the welcome.rm
that comes with it wont play, clips from cnn, trailers from movie sites, clips
from realguide etc either give the General Error #1, or Error #19? - Unable
to connect to server. :(. Errors of the first kind are accompanied by:
audio: write error: 706 bytes errno: 0 type messages at the command
prompt.
Any ideas what I am doing wrong?!

Re: kernel 2.2.6

1999-04-24 Thread Timothy Hospedales
What is the inherent issue which puts a limit on the size max size of
the kernel? And what plans do Linus et al have for 3.0+ or whenever even bz
Kernels pass this size limit?

 Root device is (3,5)
 Boot sector is 512 bytes
 Setup is 1286 bytes
 System is 526 kB
System is too big. try using bzImage or modules.

bzImage does not work and my kernel is in no way bloated. i only
included standard stuff and it was practically the same as i had 2.0.36
except for joystick support. what can i do?

Make more things modules. And do use bzImage.

File Processing: Please Advise

1999-04-23 Thread Timothy Hospedales
Hi! I have a file processing task and would like some advice on how
best to go about it!
I have afew thousand .jpg files from my scanner and I want to rotate
them all and maybe some other things. I forget the exact command but with
something like imagemagick -rotate 90 infile outfile where infile[s] are
a set of files - file[0001-2000].jpg and outfiles[s] would be created as
processedfile[0001-2000].jpg.
I cant figure out how to make a bash script to do this easily. I could
do it with C but would like to know how to do it in some scripting type langage.
So is there a good way to do this with BASH or should I bring Perl up to the
top of my TO-LEARN list or what?

Thanx!

Re: File Processing: Please Advise

1999-04-23 Thread Timothy Hospedales
With the example echo script only returns: (Despite the fact that there are
many .jpgs)
$find . -name '*.jpg' | xargs ./Suggestion.sh
./test1.jpg
$
Is this how it is meant to work?

I was reading the man page for xargs but didnt understand most of it: I get the
impression that xargs should do:
./Suggestion.sh find result1
./Suggestion.sh find result2
etc etc?

Thats what it would probably have to do since image magick's convert seems
to refuse to convert multiple files on one command line.

Further Ideas?
Thanks a Mil!
TiM

--cut here
#!/bin/sh
#$1 holds first command line argument
#do stuff to $1 here...
 echo $1 #example
 --end cut

Put this in a file, then chmod +x that file.

 Now, invoke this like so:

 $ find . -name '*.jpg' | xargs myscript.sh

Not true. If the manpage says this manpage is out of date, see the info

If there's no manpage there then I'll just be confused and wondering why
 there's no documentation.

read the actual xml.

RE: hp cdwriter (where to mount?)

My HP IDE writer works fine with mount -t iso9660 /dev/hdd /cdrom as

and reader on one cable on the secondary.
Getting it to write is another story which I am still working on

If it still wont mount some more detail on what it says when you cant
mount it would be helpfull!
Good luck!

Extreme Security Suggestions?

1999-02-05 Thread Timothy Hospedales
Hi,
I am wondering what is the recommended way to secure a sizeable volume (0.5-2GB
) of confidential data such that it is non-retreivable/unusable even in the
event that a hacker has gained user level or shudder root access?

I have thought of some kind of encryption; but I haven't seen anything fast
enough to make that practical given that I would have to re-encrypt the whole
data set after working on it. I also thought of simply having a dedicated
partition for the data in question and unmounting it when I leave the machine.
But I suppose a hacker with root access could easily remount it. Which leaves
the option of having a dedicated physical drive and unplugging it when I leave.
But that is annoying since I would have to leave my machine open all the time.
:(. So any other suggestions, comments?

Thanks!
Timothy
PS: I have no intention of letting a hacker gain access to my machine; but its
nice to be prepared for the worst. ;).

Try to swap /dev/lp0 and /dev/lp1 in your printer setup. The numbers
have been swapped for some reason nobody understands (to correct some
BIOS error or to provide compatibility with BIOS, dunno).

Adding ftp users?

1999-01-14 Thread Timothy Hospedales
Hi, I have what is probably a stupid question. :).

How should I add a real user to my wu-ftpd server?

I suppose I could just copy my /etc/passwd to the ~ftp/etc/passwd, but
is this secure? And will I have to do it again everytime I add a new real user?
I can't hardlink to /etc/passwd because /home/ftp is on its own partition...? I
haven't seen much about this in the relevant manpages and wuftpd FAQ. adduser
and addftpuser scripts don't seem to be much help either.

Thanks for all advice!

1999-01-12 Thread Timothy Hospedales
Hello,
In X-Cd-Roast hard disk setup tab, I am not able to enter anything for
Image-Partition 1: it doesn't let you type into the field, and the select
button brings up a box with nothing in it except OK and CANCEL. Everything else
in setup works fine.
Any idea what is going on here / how to fix it? Apparantly it can't work
without this field filled in.

I have 2.0.36 compiled with SCSI-ATAPI-emmulation, and everything
detects fine on bootup as well as on the SCSI/IDE info section of X-CD-Roast.

Thanks in advance!

WindowMaker/XFMail?

1998-05-17 Thread Timothy Hospedales
Hi all.
I just used apt to get and install WindowMaker, (I was using icewm b4).
Now that its installed, my xfmail refuses to do anything that involves
opening a new window - Reading Mail, Composing mail etc. When I press
compose or something, the main XFMAIL window goes into the background,
but no new window appears.
Everything works fine again if I start X with icewm.

any ideas?
Thanks,
Timothy

Re: e2fslibsg conflicts with e2fsprogs (hamm) | APT

1998-05-03 Thread hospedales
I did an 'apt-get upgrade', and apt went ahead and removed e2fslibsg in
favour of e2fsprogs without any messages or warnings. So now I have no
e2fslibsg, but everything seems to be fine, what will happen if I have to
reboot?

Thanks,
Timothy

PS, for the developers: apt-get upgrade is really cool! I suppose people could
just set it up as a weekly or monthly cron job and have machines keep
themselves up todate! :).

I did it using the --force-remove-essential flag to dpkg while
removing. Make sure that you install e2fslibsg before rebooting the
 system.

Re: Diety / Apt Questions.

1998-05-03 Thread hospedales
First, thanks alot for everyones help!

I am presuming that you want to run programs that open windows on the
X-display that you have already logged into as a 'normal user', yes?

The 'xhost +localhost' (or any other host that you are using on your
network) is a good solution (probably the best).

IF you are not running multiple X displays on your machine then a
simple technique is to 'su' in an xterm,
 'cp /home/user/.Xauthority /root'
which will then let root open things on your display.

So does root get to keep my user's .Xauthority file permanently then? Or is
.Xauthority periodically generated? (Man -k xauthority and variations thereof
return nothing. :(...) And what does the .Xsession file that someone was
talking about do? (No luck with man and that file either)

SNIP
BTW, unless I am mistaken, you never need to do the 'export DIPLAY'
command unless you are trying to open a display on a display OTHER
than the on that you are using to issue the command.
So if I am logged into a remote computer telnet, could I do xhost
+remotecomputer on mine, and export DISPLAY=myipaddr on remote, and then start
some X program on remote and have it send the display to my Xserver?

thanks,
Timothy

Terminal Corruption

1998-05-03 Thread hospedales
Any idea why / how to prevent the text on Virtual Consoles going nuts and being
replaced with lots of funny garbage characters?

This happens to me occasionally if I accidentally cat an executable file. But
today it happened when I mounted an msdos floppy, and tried to do 'ls'. When
this happens the VC it happens on is useless and the characters are only normal
again when I reboot. Even when I type exit (which appears all corrputed of
course), the little pengiun logo on the login screen is all corrupted. :(.

Any ideas? I really hate having to reboot my computer, it reminds me of
windoze!

Thanks!

Diety / Apt Questions.

1. (Out of curiosity) is there any way to specify the server apt-get uses? Are

2. Could I make a symlink from /var/cache/apt/archives to another

3. If apt retrieves a newer version of a package and stores it as usual in the
archives directory, does it delete the older one? or does that directory grow
without limit?

Free/OpenSource software?

1998-04-30 Thread hospedales
Hi,
I am planning to start to write a piece of software in the near future,
and I am considering whether or not to make the source open when I do so. I
would appreciate any advice on pros and cons of having the source open.
I don't understand some free software people. To me computers
are tools to get a job done, if a proprietary source tool works best, i would
use it. As it stands, I use Linux because its better than Windoze et al. Anyway,
some questions.
1. I am planning to write in Java. Does the fact that Sun seems to have
control over the language itself affect the ability to apply the GPL or similar
liscences to Java software?
2. As I understand it, the GPL forbids use of your source code in closed source
software. However, if an unscruplous individual were to do so anyway, how would
you know since the individual's source would be closed?
3. Is there any other major benefit to open source beside peer review?

Thanks In Advance!

Re: Memory problem....

Oh! Sorry! My mistake.
I meant to say that Total: was about 15MB. Free was slightly less than that
again.
Which as I understand would be okay for a 16MB system, since the kernel takes
about 1MB, but implies that about 16MB is not being found since it is a 32MB
system.

First, there is no command `freemem' AFAIK. `free' is the command.

Second, you will rarely if ever see more than a small fraction of your
memory free. Most of the time, it is used up by cache, which gets
freed automatically as necessary. The number you should be concerned
about in the `free' output is Total, which should be somewhere between
 31000 and 32000, approximately, for a 32 MB system.

Hm. Well. I have no idea what options the default kernel that comes
with the hamm install disks built with? Does anyone know where this is
documented?
But in any case, the default hamm kernel found my 64MB just fine. So I
doubt this is the problem.

There used to be (I imagine there still is) a kernel config option that
has to be turned on to use more than 16MB. Have you checked this?

Re: securing debian

1998-04-26 Thread hospedales
I would like to make my Debian box use shadow passwords since it is
allways on the 'Net. Firstly, how do I turn on shadow passwords in debian?
Secondly, will this affect my pppd, proftpd, telnetd, apache or other daemons?
Thanks,
Timothy Hospedales

BTW, I was reading the Shadow-HOWTO and it says
SNIP
System crackers know all this, and will simply encrypt a dictionary of words
and common passwords using all possible 4096 salt values. Then they will
compare the encoded passwords in your
/etc/passwd file with their database. Once they have found a match, they have
the password for another account. This is referred to as a dictionary attack,
and is one of the most common methods
for gaining or expanding unauthorized access to a system.

If you think about it, an 8 character password encodes to 4096 * 13 character
strings. So a dictionary of say 400,000 common words, names, passwords, and
simple variations would easily fit on a
4GB hard drive. The attacker need only sort them, and then check for matches.
Since a 4GB hard drive can be had for under $1000.00, this is well within the
means of most system crackers.
/SNIP

If a 4GB drive and lots of time are all it takes, how do any systems at
all w/o shadow passwords avoid breakins?

SNIP
Also, if a cracker obtains your /etc/passwd file first, they only need to
encode the dictionary with the salt values actually contained in your
/etc/passwd file. This method is usable by your
average teenager with a couple of hundred spare Megabytes and a 486 class
computer.
/SNIP

Since /etc/passwd is world readable, then it sould not be a problem to
break into any non-shadow system?

Yes, i'm clueless about security having used Windoze all my life until
afew months ago when I first heard about Linux! So thanks for any advice!

Possibly Off Topic: Fonts gone bananas in X.

1998-04-16 Thread Timothy Hospedales
Hi,
I recently upgraded my X packages to 3.3.2-3. (xlib6g, xbase, xserver-vga16,
xserver-svga, xfntbase, xfnt75, xfnt100, xfntbig, xfntscl).
I also upgraded my gimp stuff to gimp0.99.26-1, libgimp0.99.26-1,
libgtk10.99.10-1.

Now when I do text in gimp with any font, say, lucida bright or times,
the text is super duper blocky just as if it started off a small fixed size and
was stretched to many times its current size.

Any ideas how I can fix this? I am guessing it broke somewhere during the
upgrades, but I'm not sure.

Thanks in advance,
Timothy

I installed cvs, and it works again just like you said.
But when I added the line you suggested to the ~/.emacs file, it didn't make
any difference when I loaded up .java files. Any ideas?
(As you may have guessed i'm a clueless beginner to emacs. Sigh). :).
Thanks,

Well, I don't know why registerring the file with version control
would give you syntax highlighting, but you problem may come from not
 having cvs installed.

But registerring something with version control is not the way to get
syntax highlighting anyway. I just have the following in my .emacs,
and it suffices to give every java file pretty colors:
 (add-hook 'java-mode-hook 'font-lock-mode)

If you just want to higlight one file, just do M-x font-lock-mode.

SCSI changes Interrupts?

1998-03-01 Thread Timothy M. Hospedales
I just got my Adaptec 152x SCSI adapter to work However, two weird
things happened in the process that I wonder if anyone could shed some
light on

Firstly, before I got it to work, cat /proc/interrupts reported my PS2
mouse as being on IRQ 8, SoundScape as being on IRQ 10, and had no
listing for sound. After I got it to work by setting the jumpers on
the SCSI adapter to IRQ 9, and giving the kernel the appropriate
parameters at boot time, cat /proc/interrupts reports the PS2 mouse on
IRQ 12, sound on IRQ 5, and does not list SoundScape any more.
(The SoundScape support in the kernel is configured to use IRQ 10 for
MIDI, and IRQ 5 for Audio... (DSP?)).
Any ideas on the discrepancy?

Also, before it started working, I tried setting the IRQ jumpers on 11.
(Not listed as in use by /proc/interrupts at the time), however, at boot
time, it failed to initalize that IRQ, and suggested that it might be
wrong.. So, after that I tried IRQ 9, (also not listed as in use),
which worked.
Any ideas on why it wouldn't work on an interrupt not listed as in use?
I suspect my /proc/interrupts is abit crazy, because even now that it
doesn't show the SoundScape on IRQ 10 any more, it still initalizes fine
on that IRQ at boot time, and I can still play mp3s fine. :).

Thanks in advance for any thoughts on the matter,
Timothy.

PS: I use aha152x=0x140,11,7,1 at boot time now. Can anyone fill me in
on what the '7' and '1' are about? The SCSI howto used them, but I
couldn't find anything on their significance.

From what i've seen RH5 people seem to beable to compile E-stuff fine,
while they give trouble on other distributions.
I'm wondering what the RH5 people have that i'm missing: On my Hamm
system, ImLib compiles fine, but none of the other Enlightenment things
or Enlightenment itself will compile.
Any ideas on what RH5 might have over my Debian Hamm, and how to fix it?

Thanks,
Timothy.

PS: Are there any plans to debianize Enlightenment now that it's in
beta?

Sound Modem on one ISA Board?

1998-02-18 Thread Timothy M. Hospedales
A friend of mine would like to install Linux; he has a board by creative
that has both sound and modem on it.
Might linux have a problem with this - Is there any reason why it
mightn't work properly with a single board for music modem?
(It's not one of the IBM DSP things).
Or better yet, has anyone been able, or unable to get one of these to
work?

Thanks,
Timothy.

Netscape 4.0 Bus Error Fixed, New Linux Distribution....

1998-02-15 Thread Timothy M. Hospedales
Just a note for others who have been experiencing the Netscape Bus Error
bug when attempting to view Java Applets;
I just upgraded to X-Suse (Matrox), in an attemt to get X-Anim to work
better, and inadvertently 'fixed' Netscape.
I can run all Java applets I encounter just fine now; (previously any
applet caused netscape to crash with a bus error).
And they run faster than Netscape 4 for Windoze to boot! :).

Also, I just noticed a new linux distribution: stampede linux. -
www.stampede.org.
They claim that the reason for their distribution is to have one which
new users will beable to use easily, and which power users will think is
'awesome'.
What do ya'll think about this?

Xanim.....

1998-02-14 Thread Timothy M. Hospedales
Thanks for everyones help with the PPP problem. It's fixed now. :).
I recently installed the XAnim package; I've tried playing AVI,MOV and
MPG files.
All of them play black white, criss crossed with lines, and distorted
with multiple outlines of the animation at different offsets.
When I add the +b option, or various other options suggested in the
xanim man page, it plays bw with only vertical lines and no distortion.

However, I can't get it to work any better than that. Any ideas?

I have a Matrox Millenium 4MB video board with the regular
SVGA X-server.
I'm Running X at 1152X864, 24bit color.
My X is still libc5 although I have upgraded to libc6.

Thanks in advance!
Timothy.

Spreading Linux..... new PPP problem :(.

1998-02-13 Thread Timothy M. Hospedales
Hi,
I'm helping a friend setup debian on his computer; he uses the same
ISP as me, so I set it up just like mine.
It didn't work immediately (It just disconnected shortly after connect),
so I added +chap to the options file to make sure it was using the
CHAP auth that the server wanted.
Now when I start pppd, it says. Peer Authentication Required, but no
authentication files accessible. - I presume this means that the problem
is that it couldn't / cant find or access the chap-secrets file that
I made.
The chap-secrets is in /etc/ppp, and I chmod'ed it to 777 just incase,
but it still does the same stuff.

I'm sure its something really silly that i'm missing.
Any ideas what it could be?

Yes, we use the same dialup number and everything. Our ISP only authenticates
with CHAP, so we have to use this chap-secrets thing.

Does he dial the same number you do? Some isp's use different arrangements

That isn't what +chap does. +chap tells pppd to demand that the server
authenticate itself to you using chap. It won't do so, of course. Take
the +chap out. The server will ask for chap authentication and pppd will
 know what to do.

Re: Automating PPP with cron?

Sounds like a dooable crack.

I see a cron.daily, weekly monthly directory in /etc, with scripts in it,
which I presume get executed daily weekly and month respectively.
I'de like it to run every 6 hours. I tried read the cron cron tab manpages,
but I'm still clueless as to how to do this I can't find any howto's on
this either. :(.

Any pointers to doc files, (or actual help:), on this subject?

Thanks,
Timothy

And about the hours disconnect/connect thing: You could kill pppd with a
cronjob, but this is rather a bad idea (in the case you are doing a
download at this moment :-). Maybe using diald is better. Never used it
 though.

Automating PPP with cron?

1998-02-08 Thread Timothy M. Hospedales
Hi,
I would like to setup my system to do two things.
To check periodically to see if my PPP connection has died, and redial

you stay one more than 6 hours consecutively).

What would be the best way to go about implementing this, and how should
I start going about it?

Monolith DynDNS + ip-up

1998-02-06 Thread Timothy M. Hospedales
Hi, I'm trying to register my monolith domain from within my ip-up
script using mlddc.
I have the line (mlddc mymldata 21) /var/log/mlddc as specified
in the readme file in ip-up.
However, when I login as usual with pppd, it doesn't register and the
/var/log/mlddc file is empty.
When I type that exact line on the command prompt it registers fine and
the /var/log/mlddc file has the registration info appended.
I tried chmoding everything in my /etc/ppp and all contents to 777
incase something didn't have enough permissions, but there was no
difference.

Any thoughts on why it will work on the command prompt and not in the
script?

Thanks,
Timothy.

SO4, dpkg

1998-01-18 Thread Timothy M. Hospedales
Hi!
I just downloaded the StarOffice4 tarball from ftp.stardivision.de,
and installed it fine. However, it generates segmentation faults and
crashes with what appears to be complete irregularity. I installed it
onto /usr/local/Office40 as root. (It seemed to want to install onto the
home directory of what ever user I was logged in as, but I thought that
was abit ridiculous since it would mean repeated use of 100 or so MB).
Also, much of the time when I install new packages with dpkg, at the
end of the install and config it says
Unknown function multi
-f: Aborting
Unknown function multi
-f: Aborting
and then stalls.

Any ideas on either problem?

Netscape 4.04.... [Read this Please!]

My MOZILLA_HOME as well as all the other directories NSN must find as

I suspect that the problem is rooted in the half bo, half hamm thing.
Does anyone run applets successfully in NSN4 under a dual libc5 libc6

Mine works fine. I'm running full hamm, how about you?

Works fine here too, full hamm.

For those who are having trouble, you need to set the environment variable
MOZILLA_HOME to the path where netscape is located. On my machine, it is
 located in...

   MOZILLA_HOME=/usr/lib/netscape

Re: Package Installation....

1998-01-11 Thread Timothy M. Hospedales
Hi, just a quick question b4 I go to lunch.
I just installed the StarOffice thing, and had two problems. The first, was
mentioned in the FAQ; it wouldn't register the deamons. Unfourtunately, I have
no idea how to enable the portmapper that the FAQ said I had to do. Where do
I start with this?
Then I went to run the setup script, (which was annoying; I couldn't find it
because dpkg -L staroffice3 didn't list staroffice as owning it).
And big install-sheild style window comes up with a smaller window in it that
never got a chance to paint because the Xserver died, saying it caught error no
11. The script gave the error that my environment wasn't setup, so I rebooted,
and set my XPPATH variable as suggested in the FAQ.
This time I ran the script, and it crashed the X-Server again with the same
error, but the script didn't give any error messages.

Any ideas?
Thanks!

Re: Package Installation....

1998-01-11 Thread Timothy M. Hospedales
I had been installing the StarOffice3.1 deb package as root, so I tried to
redoo it as a regular user, but dpkg said I needed superuser priviliges. So,
I tried untarring the tarballs manually according to the mini-howto, but I ran
into the same Server Crash no 11 problem when I tried to do the setup script.
I was wondering if it could be my libc5 or xpm, ( I have libc 5.4.38 (the newest
on debian.org, unstable/base) and xpm4.7 3.4j-0.5), but the FAQsaid that you
get a
specific error message if your libc5 isn't good enough; which I didn't get, so I
doubt it.
Did you have to do anything special to get your manually untarred 3.1 to
work?

Timothy

PS - This is very depressing, this is the first thing i've been trying to do
under
linux that hasn't worked.
I think I'll go get version 4 just to see if it works. :).

Error no. 11 is a subject for a thesis, but the jist of it is that
memory is trying to be accessed which is not properly provided for.
This can be the result of a number of things such as bad code,
overclocked processors, and it may even be intentional. (Because I
doubt you want to become a developer right now, I'll skip the debugging
hoopla, although ideally that would be a Good Thing.) One reason it
may be intentional is that one cannot install staroffice as root--any
attempt to do so will intentionally dump core. The reason is that like
some other programs which are intended to be networked, it is
considered insecure to give superuser status to apps which could be
heisted by a hacker. There are several ways this can occur, I believe
one such type of attack is called buffer flow overrun, which is
essentially what it sounds like. Anyway, make sure you're NOT root and
 see if that helps.

This time I ran the script, and it crashed the X-Server again with the same
error, but the script didn't give any error messages.

  Any ideas?
  Thanks!
  Timothy

Remember that while I do have a functional staroffice3.1 installation,
I haven't used the .deb myself. Before you criticize me for
recommending that, let me explain: I spent FIVE MONTHS (no joke) trying
to get staroffice to install using manual tarball and rpm methods, and
finally I got a working installation. Then I installed Debian, and at
about the same time I started hearing reports that the .deb script
worked very well. Since that time (several months) I've not heard a
single report of any difficulty, thus my recommendation. Meanwhile, my
StarOffice installation is on /opt which I merely set in /etc/fstab to
be booted automatically, so I just copied some user configuration files
with filerunner from my old installation, and I was ready to go.

Also remember that any large application with static motif libraries
will likely have a performance impediment--it's not terrible with
staroffice, but is noticeable. Version 4.0 is not linked against motif,
and the performance is much improved. Also, the 4.0 installation is
wizardly simple, fast, smooth, and flexible. Also, version 4.0 has
nicer appearing fonts. In my opinion, version 4.0 is worth waiting
 three weeks for.

I suspect that any further questions regarding this particular case
will exceed by ability to knowledgably respond, so my recommendation
would be to accomplish what you can with what I've given you and then
post the list for soem more qualified help. But if I can be of any
real help, don't hesitate to ask.

Package Installation....

1998-01-10 Thread Timothy M. Hospedales
Hi!
I just downloaded StarOffice 3.1 from Caldera, and debianized the RPMs
with Alien. (Thanks for the help with my Alien problem, it works now!).
When I try to install it, it wants to install onto /opt/StarOffice-3.1.
But my root partition doesn't have enough space for 100mb's of
staroffice!! Any ideas or pointers to relevant documentation on how
I can get it to install onto my /usr partition like everything else?

I could just install the .rpms with RPM, because RPM seems to have an
option to set destination directory, but the rpm man page says I should
use Alien for .rpms unless you know exactly what your doing...
Could I break anything by using RPM to install it?

Thanks!

ICQ for Java

Has anyone got ICQ for Java to work?
Mine goes fine until it has to contact the ICQ server for creating a new

some kind of a loop between the warning message and the last page of

so quickly that I don't think it actually tries.

Re: Linux article in Sunworl

1998-01-05 Thread Timothy Hospedales
Incase any of ya'll care, in my inexperienced opinion. Debian is
definitely the best distribution. :). I tried Slackware, which as
mentioned, was very difficult to maintain and upgrade, eventually I gave
up. I tried RedHat which was easier, but wasn't quite as configurable. Then
I tried Debian Which has just been great, and i'm going to use it until
something better comes out!

One thing mentioned in the article was that Linux [supposedly] didn't
scale easily, and hence was not very good for enterprise level stuff. Yet,
I seem to remember reading in either the linux or debian FAQ that it scaled
very well to multiple pentium processors.. What's the real scene with
its scalability?

Timothy

The other problem was that they'd compiled and installed mySQL
themselves, and forgotten the on the line in the script to load it,
so it seemed to hang. Of course, Debian does all this for you, so no
issue.

I took the opportunity to bag Slackware. (They are NT and Solaris
people anyway.) Slackware seems to be to me almost unmaintainable;
removing software completely is difficult, worse than Windows possibly.
Although it's possible that Solaris people are used to installing
additional software from sources anyway, so it isn't an issue.

Both sites had versions of their latest packages in rpm format. Is there,

I know that 'alien' can install rpm files and in fact I did use alien to

Netscape 4.04 bug / problem?

I just downloaded Netscape 4.04 and installed it via the .deb installer.

Then, any time I go to a page with a Java applet, all my netscape

Does this happen to anyone else? Any ideas how to fix it?

Ensoniq Soundscape

Can I (and if so how), change the settings that it's using now, or do I

disable it's Sound Blaster compatibility mode under the DOS SSINIT program.

On a closer note, you will most likely need to force the card into a non
PNP mode
and adjust it's settings manually to where you want them to be. (Either
that or
try the ISAPNP tools for Linux.. ). If your card (as mine does) uses the
SSINIT
program in DOS mode to set itself up, you can use that to determine where
your card
is trying to place itself.

Question.

1997-12-30 Thread Timothy Hospedales
Does anyone know if there have been any studies on the cost
effectiveness
of networks based on linux vs networks based on NT? While linux
seems to be cheaper, where I live technical expertise is in _very_ short
supply and so linux would probably be alot more expensive to admister.?
( A relation of mine is incharge of an organization of a thousand or so
people which is looking to upgrade its LAN and add various internet servers
etc.. the NT estimate was many tens of thousands of US. So I promised
to find out the comparitive cost of linux networks ).

thanx,
Timothy

Bizarre problem.

1997-12-29 Thread Timothy Hospedales
Hey guys! I've got a really *bizarre* problem!!! When I am using my PPP
dialup connection, I can use everything on the 'net perfectly. EXECEPT,
that I cannot access any dialup IP's in my ISP's domain, including my own.
Any attempt at contacting, using the IPs directly, or via a dyn.ml.org
domain name, with PING's, or various clients fail.
My ISP's domain is 196.3.144.*. The first five IP's (196.3.144.1-5), are
the IPs of my ISP's domain, web, ftp, etc servers. These IP's I can access
fine. Subsequent IP's (6-about 200) are assigned to dialup accounts, I
can't access any of these. :(.

I've got no idea where to start trying to fix this. :(.
Any ideas at all are appreciated. :).
Thanx,
Timothy

dpkg

1997-12-28 Thread Timothy Hospedales
IS there a dpkg option to list all the installed packages? I looked in
the
man pages but didn't see anything that [obviously] did that If not,
since it keeps track of what is installed, I presume there must be some
file somewhere which has them listed in it, anyone happen to know which
file that is?

Thanks,
Timothy

1997-12-27 Thread Timothy Hospedales
Does anyone know what the story is with JDK? .According to my packages
file, the stable debian packages is ver 1.0.2.. Sun recently released
ver 1.2 (For Solaris/Windoze)..
Is the package behind because Sun hasn't released any / any stable versions
for linux beyond 1.0.2, or because the package hasn't been updated, or what?

Thanx,

PPP dialup. :(.

1997-12-25 Thread Timothy Hospedales
Thanks to everyone who helped me before!... Now I have a somewhat more
complicated looking problem. :(.

I'm trying to dial into my ISP using PPP. (At this point I haven't done any
extra configuration besides network config info that the debian setup asks
for).
In X, I startup minicom, dial, and login manually. It then tells me that it
has started PPP and to start my PPP, whereupon it starts displaying the
usual garbage.
I open a bash term and type pppd, and it starts displaying its garbage.
I open another bash term, and try to ping my ISP's domain server, and it
tells me that the network is unreachable. :(. Afew seconds later, minicom
hungup.
My ppp.log says
Dec 24 22:56:58 jade pppd[325]: pppd 2.2.0 started by root, uid 0
Dec 24
22:56:58 jade pppd[325]: Using interface ppp0
Dec 24 22:56:58 jade
pppd[325]: Connect: ppp0 -- /dev/ttyp2
Dec 24 22:57:28 jade pppd[325]:
LCP: timeout sending Config-Requests
Dec 24 22:57:28 jade pppd[325]:
Connection terminated.
Dec 24 22:57:28 jade pppd[325]: Receive serial link
is not 8-bit clean:
Dec 24 22:57:28 jade pppd[325]: Problem: nothing was
received
Dec 24 22:57:28 jade pppd[325]: Exit.

So, then I follow the configuration instructions in section 6 (Network
Installation) of the Debian Users Guide. Putting... (Most of which was
there already).
/etc/hosts
127.0.0.1 jade

/etc/resolv.conf
domain cablenett.net
search cablenett.net
nameserver 196.3.144.2
nameserver 196.3.144.3

/etc/host.conf
order hosts,bind
multi on

/etc/ppp/options
debug

/dev/ttyS0
38400
modem
crtscts
lock
connect /etc/ppp/ppp-connect
asyncmap 0
defaultroute

Then I try again, going through the same process as described before. This
time, my PPP doesn't output anything, pinging the DNS server's IP still
generates a network unreachable message, I still get hungup, and the PPP
log also says:
Dec 24 23:10:28 jade pppd[350]: pppd 2.2.0 started by root, uid 0
Dec 24
23:10:28 jade pppd[350]: Device ttyS0 is locked by pid 321
Dec 24 23:10:28
jade pppd[350]: Exit.

Something is really weird because, previously, I was using RedHat for a
while and the same stuff with network unreachable messages and getting
hungup would happen. :(.

Can anyone help me?
Thanks alot!!!
Timothy

PS: Merry Christmas everyone! :)

Re: PPP dialup. :(.

1997-12-25 Thread Timothy Hospedales
Okay Thanks! I will try the script... one thing though, when I login to
my
ISP manually, I have to press ENTER afew times before the login prompt
comes up, how do I tell a script to send ENTER?
Thanks,
Timothy

You are closer here. ttyS0 is locked by your minicom session. Forget
minicom. All the info you need to dial should be in /etc/ppp/ppp-connect.
Edit that file and put in the info needed, and then simply type

pppd

as root at a shell prompt.

PPP is still a disaster. :(. Please Help. :)

1997-12-25 Thread Timothy Hospedales
I made to try out everyone's suggestions for getting my PPP dialup to
work.
The first thing that happened is t hat when I turned on my
computer, for
some reason /dev/mouse was linked to my /dev/ttyS0, and so things refused
to use ttyS0. So I deleted /dev/mouse, but then nothing would detect the
modem on /dev/ttyS0. I then booted off my bootdisk that I made during
debian setup, and it was recognized okay.. Any ideas on how to fix this?
Now, (having booted off the disk), I check my /etc/ppp/ and am
disappointed to find that I have no scripts already there that I can
customize. :(. So, I decited to try a program that was recommended to me by
another user, wvdial (http://www.worldvisions.ca/wvdial). It starts to work
beautifully, and logs in, detects a ppp, starts my ppp, and then
disconnects, and says the ppp deamon exited with error code 2. I check the
ppp-errors file, and it says that the /etc/ppp/ppp-connect file doesn't
exist.
Now, I take out the line 'connect /etc/ppp/ppp-connect' from the options
file in /etc/ppp/ and dial again. This time it exits with error code 1. The
ppp log file also says:

Dec 25 17:59:23 jade pppd[192]: pppd 2.2.0 started by root, uid 0

Xfree86 question

1997-12-24 Thread Timothy Hospedales
Hi! I am a new Linux user converted from Windows NT. :).
I have a 17 inch monitor, but my XFree86 insists on displaying in an
approximately 15 inch rectangle of my screen. How do I configure it to fill
the whole screen?
Also! Is there an equivalent of Microsoft's file manager for X windows?

Thanks,
Timothy
